Okay, it’s not yet at the level of “rage” and – as seen here – the disputed section of Largo Road in Roberts Creek is not yet ready for traffic. But area residents are angry about the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) plans to make it a through-road. Previously, there were two stretches of Largo Road that were joined by a trail. That trail is in the process of becoming a road necessary to service a new 13-lot subdivision. The question is whether or not it becomes a through-road, which would run from the highway to Lower Rd. MoTI says its policy is to make through-roads where possible. But residents fear it will become a short-cut to “downtown” Roberts Creek – the shortest route from Gibsons – will be dangerous and will damage the neighbourhood. Sechelt declared a local state of emergency and issued an evacuation order for the Seawatch subdivision on Feb. 15. The declaration and order were made due to ongoing subsurface instability impacting 6629 to 6689 Gale Avenue North, 6644 to 6649 Seawatch Lane as well as 6453 and 6450 Crowston Road.

“We hope residents put the lives of their families first and comply with the order as quickly as possible. We regret having to take this action but we did so to prevent serious injury or loss of life,” said Sechelt Mayor Darnelda Siegers.

On Dec. 25, a 25-metre-deep sinkhole surfaced on a vacant lot adjacent to Seawatch Lane. The subdivision had experienced ground instability and undermining of road beds since 2012.

The appearance of the latest sinkhole prompted Sechelt to re-evaluate the risk to residents. In early January, it closed road access within the subdivision and contracted Thurber Engineering to assess the site. Thurber’s Feb. 6 report stated that there is a very high probability of at least one sinkhole collapse each year based on the recent history of the site. It also noted that future sinkholes or landslides could damage existing infrastructure such as underground utilities, roads or sidewalks, or private property including buildings and retaining walls. Injury or even death are possible consequences. Sechelt then issued an evacuation alert and notified area residents.

The wisdom of children Summer 2018 was Sweden’s hottest since record-keeping began more than 260 years ago — marked by drought, wildfires and extremely low reservoir levels. That was too much for 15-year-old Greta Thunberg. She heard politicians talking about climate change but didn’t see them doing enough about it.

So she refused to go to school until a general election on September 9. Every day, she sat outside Parliament in Stockholm and handed out leaflets with the message, “I am doing this because you adults are shitting on my future.”

Now her lone action has spread worldwide, and she’s gone on to address negotiators at December’s UN climate summit in Katowice, Poland, and delegates at the January World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She’s also inspired thousands of students from Brussels to Melbourne to Winnipeg to walk out of classes every Friday to draw attention to the climate crisis and opportunities to fix it.

Young people have also launched a number of climate-related legal actions in the U.S., Canada, Belgium, Norway, India, Colombia and elsewhere. With the slow pace of justice, the kids could be grown up and the planet half-cooked before their cases are decided. A suit launched by 21 young Americans in 2015 is still making its way through the courts. The plaintiffs argue that government promotion of fossil fuels in the face of known climate impacts violates “the youngest generation’s constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property.” At least government attempts to dismiss the case have failed.

These kids have more wisdom than the grownups elected to represent our interests. They also have more at stake. While governments support the fossil fuel industry with subsidies, incentives and propaganda for the sake of short-term profits, young people must consider what kind of world they’ll inherit from their short-sighted elders. Because most are too young to vote, they have few avenues other than protests and legal action to get politicians and others to pay attention.

Thunberg has a good response to those who accuse her and other youth of being simplistic: “You say nothing in life is black or white,” she told wealthy elites in Davos. “But that is a lie. A very dangerous lie. Either we prevent 1.5 C of warming or we don’t. Either we avoid setting off that irreversible chain reaction beyond human control or we don’t.

Either we choose to go on as a civilization or we don’t. That is as black or white as it gets. There are no grey areas when it comes to survival.”

It’s time to heed the world’s youth, or get out of their way.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Homeopathic nonsense (Re “Holistic View”, the Local, Feb. 14) While this column is known for its outlandish claims about homeopathy, the most recent one offers “wellness” advice that could be dangerous if followed.

Influenza is a potentially serious viral illness, spread by respiratory droplets, and causes 12,500 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths annually in Canada.

Let me be blunt: homeopathy is not effective for preventing or treating influenza. In fact, when studied with proper scientific controls, it has never been shown to work for any medical condition. Nor are there any valid data supporting anecdotal claims that homeopathy was more effective than standard treatment in the H1N1 pandemic of 1918.

Most people don’t realize homeopathy is neither “natural” nor “herbal”, and isn’t based on evidence, but on two scientifically implausible notions. The first is that “like cures like”; you treat a symptom with something else that causes the same symptom. The second claim is that a substance becomes more powerful the more it is diluted, which contradicts well established chemistry and pharmacology.

Typical homeopathic preparations have no active ingredient left after being repeatedly diluted and ritually shaken, but homeopaths claim water magically “remembers” the ingredient. That is nonsense. Homeopathy was created in the era before modern science-based medicine, when “allopathic” medicine consisted of purging and bloodletting. Homeopathy hasn’t changed since the 18th century, and they think that is a good thing.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, the current flu season has been mild, and has passed its peak. H1N1 has been the predominant strain, affecting children and adults while H3N2 has been more prominent in the elderly. This season’s version of vaccine has been fairly effective. Your best chance of avoiding the flu, is to practice standard preventive measures, and get the annual influenza vaccine.

Look up homeopathy (Re “Holistic View”, the Local, Feb. 14) The column implied that a healthy immune system could ward off the H1N1 virus which causes the swine flu. A well-balanced diet can contribute to a healthy immune system but the extra protection of being vaccinated against many viral diseases, including flu, is invaluable.

One of my nephews is an emergency room physician at Toronto General Hospital.

He saw a little three-yearold child last week who presented with the flu and despite the best efforts of a team of specialists at one of the biggest hospitals in Canada, she died within the hour. She appeared to be healthy but had not been vaccinated against the flu.

How tragic; how preventable.

I urge you to look up homeopathy on Wikipedia for a better understanding of the subject.

We need a highway (Addressed to Transportation Minister Claire Travena and copied to the Local) The SC101 Committee is comprised of a group of

citizens living, working and travelling on the Southern Sunshine Coast. Along with over 6,500 signees on a petition, with more coming every day, we have fundamental concerns about the transportation infrastructure on the Coast. Simply put, it is inadequate for the rapid growth in residential, commercial and visitor traffic volumes of the last several years which will only continue to rise in the future.

Our Committee has adopted the following Mission Statement: (1) To achieve construction of a new, state of the art, spectacular scenic highway from Langdale to Sechelt that meets the needs of residents, visitors, businesses, transit and first responders, now and in the years to come; (2) To upgrade the existing thoroughfare to make it a safe parkway route for local traffic as well as cyclists, pedestrians and transit; (3) To increase safety, convenience and reliability for all.

We are writing to bring to your attention the concerns of Sunshine Coast residents with regards to this issue and trust you will consider the appropriate action. Among other things, it is clear to both residents and visitors to the Southern Sunshine Coast that there has been insufficient lead planning to address our infrastructure requirements.

Further, while funding has been provided for improvements to the existing “101 corridor”, this does not address the very fundamental issue that the only solution for the future is to build a true highway. The current route is a highway in name only – in fact, it is essentially a parkway in places and a narrow two lane local road in other places.

We seek to work with you, Minister Trevena, and your

Ministry as well as others in the community as a matter of considerable importance and urgency.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions ...continued Ludicrous plan for Largo There are many local residents of Roberts Creek and of the Sunshine Coast in general, who may not realize that there is an incredible stretch of wilderness between the highway and Lower Road. A vast series of waterfalls and spectacular canyons on two parallel creeks (Clack and Roberts) eventually join in a confluence to become Roberts Creek. Pink and chum salmon make it up from the ocean past the confluence to spawn as far as some of the larger waterfalls.

I was one of those that only discovered this area, right in the heart of Roberts Creek, in the last few years. Currently, a subdivision is before the SCRD, along Largo Rd, and along the banks of Roberts Creek.

One of the big concerns, especially of many local residents, is that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) is planning on making Largo a through road from Highway 101 to Lower Rd. I have several concerns with this idea. Number one is the fact that this would likely be a heavily used road as it would offer the quickest way into the townsite. In turn, this increase in traffic could yield increased pollutants through runoff heading straight into salmon bearing areas of Roberts Creek. Vehicle sounds and exhaust fumes could also impact other species in this rare wildlife corridor.

Secondly, the pace and cultural feel of the heart of Roberts Creek may be affected with increased traffic flowing much more directly into the townsite.

Third, there are multiple safety and traffic flow concerns with completing Largo, especially given its place among the curves and hills of this already accident-prone location on the highway. Larger volumes of vehicles turning left at that location seems ludicrous.

It is my understanding that MoTI, to this point, has not offered any kind of opportunity for meaningful consultation, neither of the neighbourhood, nor the Roberts Creek community in general. My hope is that the SCRD will push MoTI as hard as possible to both offer a meaningful consultation with the community and to look at the alternatives, (such as a culde-sac), to making Largo a through road.

Perhaps it is time for the Roberts Community to examine how we can be directly involved in these MoTI decisions as they can greatly impact the culture we cherish as well as the

natural integrity of this wonderful place.

Preserve community I’m writing about the BC Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MoTI) plan to make Largo Road in Roberts Creek a through road.

I was in a small group of people who met with several MoTI men to receive their vision of how our neighbourhood should be: a place where cars could go.

Their program is to move cars and connect roads.

And that’s why Largo should be a through road from the highway to Lower Road. According to them.

Here is a different vision.

Have you heard the word “greenway?” Have you seen how real estate listings rate the “walkability” of a home for sale? Largo Road has been two sections of road joined by a path. Until a large property was put under development last year, Largo was a greenway, a way for walkers to get to Cliff Gilker Park and bikers up to the trails on the mountain above. It was, and still is, a path for those without cars to get to a bus stop on the highway or down the hill home, a trail for deer and the occasional gentle bear, a place where children could safely explore, where neighbours could stand and chat. It was, and still is, a place where community happened.

My vision, and the vision of my family and neighbours, is to keep Largo a greenway; don’t make it a through road. There are different ways to do this but we all need the vision first.

This is a vision of a community with room for walkers and bikers and children and conversation and animals. It is how we want our community to be.

Forest values balanced (Re “The Valley of Monumental Trees”, the Local, Jan. 31) BC Timber Sales (BCTS) would like to highlight to your readers the steps it is taking to ensure that future forest management in the Dakota Valley and on Dakota Ridge carefully balances Indigenous, environmental, social and economic values.

A recent letter in your publication expressed concern for the possible effects planned operations in the Dakota area may have on culturally significant trees and old growth. Readers can be assured that all BCTS operations are certified to internationally recognized, sustainable forest management standards by independent third parties.

Specific to Dakota Creek and Dakota Ridge, the Chi-

nook Business area is planning to auction two timber sale licences (TSLs) in the area. The first, TSL TA0021, is located on Dakota Ridge 6.2 kilometres from Roberts Creek and is currently scheduled for auction in spring 2019. The second, TSL A87126, is located in the Dakota Creek drainage 9.5 kilometres from Roberts Creek and is currently scheduled for auction in spring 2020.

As is normal practice, BCTS hired an archeologist to survey TSL A87126 for culturally modified trees (CMTs). A CMT is a tree that has been altered by Indigenous peoples as part of their traditional use of the forest.

In November 2018, BCTS and Squamish Nation conducted a collaborative review of the identified CMTs and agreed they would all be registered with the provincial Archaeology Branch and excluded from TSL A87126.

BCTS is serious about sustainability and all licensing by BCTS is consistent with sustainability plans, land-use plans, BCTS forest stewardship plans and established legal objectives for the protection of natural resource values such as recreation, soils, timber supply, wildlife, water, fish, biodiversity, visual landscapes and cultural resources.

In 2017-18, BCTS generated $359 million in gross revenue for the province, including $15 million from the Sunshine Coast alone.

By providing a reliable supply of timber through open and competitive auctions to loggers, wood processors and other forestry businesses, BCTS supports workers and rural communities across BC, with direct support for more than 8,000 jobs and another 10,000 indirect jobs in British Columbia.

New care home will be bound by labour agreements…

The new long-term care home to be built in Sechelt moves one significant step closer to construction now that agreements covering direct patient care and support workers are in place with the Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU) and BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU).

Under separate memoranda of agreement signed

by BCNU, HEU, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), the Ministry of Health, Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) and Silverstone Care Centre LP have agreed that care staff who currently work at Shorncliffe and Totem Lodge will be guaranteed the same wages, benefits, pension and seniority when they transfer to the new care home. Approximately 80 care aides, licensed practical nurses, activity workers, therapy aides and registered

nurses who live and work on the Sunshine Coast will benefit from these collaborative agreements.

In addition, contracted food and housekeeping support staff who work at Totem Lodge and Shorncliffe will also be offered comparable employment opportunities with no loss of wages or benefits.

“I asked Vancouver Coastal Health to go back and look at this project through the lens of the community members, and I am pleased that the negotiations were completed successfully and we can move on to the next phase of planning for this critically important care facility,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “We listened to the concerns about the importance of these jobs for health care workers in the region and have been able to retain the union status, wag-

es and benefits.”

“It is very good news that we are moving forward with the next phase of planning for the care home, which is a much-needed resource for seniors and their families in this region,” said Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons.

“I am also pleased that in supporting continued opportunities for staff, the principles we all fought for have been protected. This not only supports health care workers but will also provide benefits for the seniors who will call this space home.”

Over the next few months, Silverstone will move through the building permit process and into construction, which is expected to take approximately 18-24 months. The care home will provide at least 125 funded care beds along with adult

day services.

To enhance support for seniors who are at Sechelt Hospital waiting for long term care during the transition to the new facility, VCH will also soon be opening a 12-bed short-stay unit at the hospital.

The proposed site, which has now been accepted by VCH, is in a residential area on shíshálh Nation land and is accessible by existing transit and with amenities nearby.

Once constructed, this new care home will replace

the aging Totem Lodge and Shorncliffe facility. VCH understands the importance of these locations to the community and will engage the public and stakeholders regarding their future.

Spring is one of the most popular times to buy and sell properties on BC’s Sunshine Coast. Flowers are in bloom, the weather starts to warm up and potential buyers are looking for their new home to move into before the new school year.

It may still be winter, but if you’re considering putting your property on the market this spring, here are 10 things you can do now to get your home ready for listing in spring.

1. Get started with an early “spring clean”. From windows to inside cupboards, a top to bottom clean is a great way to prepare your home for sale.

2. Give the gardens a onceover, including weeding, removing dead plants, planting some new plants in dead spaces and adding a layer of mulch to ensure your home looks as good on the outside as it does on the inside.

3. Look after those longterm maintenance issues you’ve been putting off – fix up any peeling paint, get the carpets cleaned professionally (or replaced if they are worn through), clean grout

and replace any tiles that are cracked.

4. Declutter by donating or disposing of any items you no longer need – paperwork, kids’ toys, unused furniture.

Consider whether you need to replace older furniture or if you transform pieces by using throw rugs or cushions to give your home an affordable “makeover”.

5. Open the windows to get the fresh air flowing through the house. This will help get rid of any smells that may have built up over winter.

Keep an eye out for any mould or mildew that may have built up on windows, window frames, ceiling fans or lights and give it a good clean.

6. All the decluttering and cleaning will disturb pests that may have been in hiding. If you do have a pest problem, it is a good idea to get this done now. Thank you for your comments on the draft financial plan. Council has also been reviewing it, along with your comments, and are now beginning deliberations. When we set a budget for the municipality we must consider maintaining our infrastructure, providing the services our citizens want, planning for growth and managing the tax rate.

We have both capital and operating budgets. The proposed capital budget is $12 million. These funds come mainly from grants and development cost charges with the remainder coming from reserves. Capital spending is mostly used to maintain or expand our infrastructure. We don’t want to have to replace a road or a building because we didn’t take good care of it.

We are also looking to expand our sewer infrastructure to do away with the aging septic systems in the district. To

build up our reserves, each year there will be a three per cent property tax increase set aside to manage and help pay our portion of the capital infrastructure. This is included in our draft budget.

Our operational budget pays for the day to day services we provide. We asked staff to ensure the draft budget maintained the current service levels. We try to balance the services citizens and tourists find attractive in our community, like parks, trails, the library and visitor centre with the taxes we collect. We heard that citizens don’t want a tax increase yet if we want to maintain our services we have to keep up with cost increases. We also want tourists to come here and spend their money so we want Sechelt to be an attractive place to visit. This helps support our local businesses.

Helping our local businesses to thrive is important to this council. Business and industry pay a higher tax rate than residential properties so they lessen the tax burden for our residential property owners. Our businesses employ our citizens who then sup-

On Saturday, Feb. 23, 6-9 pm, the Gibsons Public Library hosts a KAIROS Blanket Exercise: Reconciliation through Education and Understanding. This unique participatory history lesson – developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers, and educators – fosters truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

This exercise was developed by KAIROS Canada in

response to the 1996 Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples report and since then has been offered thousands of times across the country.

The goal of the exercise, as described by KAIROS, is to “build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance.”

Participants begin by stepping onto blankets, which represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Metis peoples. Local facilitators Nancy Denham and John Denham then guide participants on this journey through four hundred years’ history of colonization and the resilience of Indigenous

Finally, the part many of you care about, the tax increase. What is proposed right now is 11.81 per cent extra. That is approximately $171 more per year for the average residential property or $14.25 a month. That is still a lot of money but we have some important work to do and that will take resources. Three per cent of that tax increase is for capital expenses as mentioned above but the rest is for our operating budget to maintain our services levels.

The province has agreed to undertake an Elphinstone Land Use Plan with the shíshálh Nation and the SCRD. This could take years. In the meantime, the Minister of Forests says: “Resource management and use are expected to continue during modernized land use planning, including forest development…” * ‘Forest development’ means LOGGING. The contentious forest blocks that triggered this Land Use Plan are the very ones that the province, through BC Timber Sales, are targeting for logging before planning has even begun!

Supportive housing on schedule

Generous family gives car co-op a boost

According to BC Housing, construction of the 40-unit modular supportive housing project at Hightide Avenue and Lamprey Lane in Sechelt is on schedule. The three-storey, $7 million project is expected to be complete by the end of March.

Work at the site started in early January. The structure of the first two floors has been assembled. Portions of the third storey have been craned into place. The rest of the modular construction units were scheduled to arrive by Feb. 19.

“While the cold weather and snowy conditions have slowed craning the modular units into place and have made transportation to the site more challenging, these delays have not impacted the construction timeline,” said Laura Mathews, senior communications advisor with BC Housing.

There are about 20 individuals working at the project site. This will likely increase to around 30 once interior finishing work starts.

When the final batch of modular units arrive at the site, 95 per cent of the structure assembly will be complete. Crews will then move on to the electrical, plumbing, interior finishing, exterior finishing, parking lot, surfacing, sidewalk and road development work.

Once completed, the site will then be handed over to RainCity Housing, who will manage day to day operations. This will include 24

housing and owner-purchase housing units.

“Through this program, we are committed to providing opportunities to help people throughout the province change their lives. The Hightide Avenue homes will give residents in Sechelt who are experiencing homelessness a stable home so they can get back on their feet,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. From now until May 31, every dollar donated to the Coast Car Co-op (CCC) – up to $10,000 in total contributions – will be matched by a CCC member from an inheritance that he received.

This innovative fundraiser is driven by two-year CCC treasurer, Mark Cameron.

When Cameron’s uncle, Tom Aylesworth, passed away in 2015, he left $10,000 to his nephew. “Tom was the most selfless person I ever met,” Cameron says. “He was quick to contribute to anyone in need, and he was a strong supporter of social enterprise. I always felt that his gift was meant to be paid forward, and this is an ideal fit.

More than 100 people rely on Coast Car Co-op vehicles for affordable transportation, and car-sharing reduces the number of vehicles that sit parked on Sunshine Coast roads. The co-op provides an important service to the community, but it needs a boost to shift from surviving to thriving.”

MoTI plans for Largo Rd. criticized About 30 concerned Roberts Creek residents met Feb. 17 to voice their dissatisfaction with a proposal to make Largo Road a through-road.

At the informal meeting at Roberts Creek Legion, organized by Largo Rd. residents Anne Moul and Bronia Kingsbury, only one attendee said he was not opposed to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI)’s plan to join the two sections of Largo Rd. to create a through-road, from Highway 101 to Lower Rd. This proposal is part of a planned 13-lot subdivision in Roberts Creek.

Attendees told Lori Pratt, Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) board chair, many reasons for their stance. Their primary issue was the danger of more accidents at Largo and Highway 101, with poor sight lines and no left-turn lane. They cited recent traffic accidents in this area even without a through-road. Similar concerns were expressed about two-way traffic on the narrow Largo Road entry point at Lower Road.

“The bottom line is people’s lives,” Kingsbury said after the meeting. “It seems like MoTI is refusing to see it that way, that they have

put on blinders and are truly not listening to the majority of the neighbours’ legitimate concerns regarding public safety.”

The group shared serious worries that as a throughroad, Largo Rd. would replace Roberts Creek Road as the new, shortest way to get to the heart of the Creek from the Town of Gibsons.

Some attendees stated that this would not only encourage speeding drivers on the B&K Road to take Largo Rd. to the heart of the Creek, it

would likely identify Largo Rd. on visiting drivers’ GPS systems as the preferred route, bypassing Roberts Creek Road.

Other concerns included increased congestion and parking on a street already heavily used for Legion events; more traffic accidents and speeding on Largo Rd. itself, particularly putting children and pedestrians at risk; noise and pollution impacts; and a fundamental change to the peaceful, rural feel of the neighbourhood road.

Pratt said that she would consider a “pause” on the process and confer with Roberts Creek SCRD representative Andreas Tize and local MLA Nicholas Simons.

Art Review Anna Nobile Freelance Creative Writer, Arts & Culture

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery features Catherine Tableau, Chantal Cardinal and Aurelia Bizouard in ?What Matters! running until March 10. The oddly punctuated title of the show is meant to draw attention to both the importance of the mediums the artists work with, and the way they question and create with their chosen medium. Cardinal works with fabrics, wool and felt; Bizouard with glass and Tableau with plaster. In a digital age, all three use easily accessible materials that require a very hands-on process. “We share a fragmented pattern and the tactile nature of each material,” says Tableau. “Aurelia works within the [Japanese] Kintsugi philosophy that there is beauty in the broken. It’s complementary to my work where I encourage imperfection and emphasize damage.

We have the same action of breaking and reconstructing. For Chantal, she designs with a fragmented pattern, exploring the pattern. We share a love for the process.”

Tableau, originally from

France, followed her partner to Cortes Island 18 years ago. She’d studied foundational courses, like painting, at the École Municipal des Beaux Arts in Nice and had also been influenced by her father. He taught her to draw but was also a plasterer who created textured walls. “I saw him doing that and sometimes I helped him,” recalls Tableau. “It’s a connection to my family.”

Moving to a quieter life on Cortes gave her more time to explore plaster as a medium.

“What is important for me is how the light worked on the surface,” she says. “It’s not just the material, but what it refers to. I’m interested in vulnerability and the impermanence of things and for me plaster is a good medium to express that.” Tableau has come to know plasters and their qualities very well over the years, learning how to work with the material, break it, reassemble it, and colour it with acrylics and alcohol inks. “I’m attracted by imprints, texture, cracks, reliefs, things calling for touch,” says Tableau. She “encourages imperfections” by using tools, inflicting stress, breaking the plaster and then creating a collage. “When you know the limits [of your medium], you can play with that,” she says, emphasizing

her love of the process. “For me its sacred territory that has ritual.” She’s now based in Vancouver where she is the director of La Maison de la Francophonie, but spends weekends and holidays in Gibsons, balancing her time between her job, her art and her family. “I hope there will be an emotion,” says Tableau of viewer’s reactions. “Some will find poetry and maybe inspiration. Cultural forum for arts groups The District of Sechelt and Arts BC are hosting “a community cultural forum” at Seaside Centre on March 1.

Tickets for the day long professional development session, aimed at non-profit organizations, cost $25. They can be purchased online at Eventbrite.ca. To allow for planning for materials and the included lunch, those interested are encouraged to register by Feb. 25.

Sechelt’s Arts, Culture and Communications Coordinator, Siobhan Smith is hoping to see volunteers, staff, and board members of the estimated 30 arts-focussed non-profit groups on the Coast in attendance.

“We know that Sunshine Coast non-profits and charities are looking for local capacity-building opportunities,” said Smith.

Local groups have told Smith that

due to budget constraints and the time required to travel to off-Coast courses, their representative are often unable access the professional development programs they need to support their work.

The forum will be led by Patricia Huntsman, an arts management and cultural planning consultant with more than 20 years of experience in the creative sector.

Huntsman is a member of the Insight Team of Arts BC, a provincial arts service organization that cultivates community cultural development.

“Our day will start with an overview of current trends and impacts in BC’s and Canada’s arts and culture landscape. We’ll then discuss these with respect to our local context. From there, we’ll dive into workshops on a variety of topics,” said Smith.

Artesia on Friday The monthly Artesia Coffee House will be held Friday, Feb. 22 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

The resident grand piano will be in attendance and played in the first set by Anna Lumiere as she accompanies vocalist and new resident to the Sunshine Coast, Deanna Knight, who will feature some of her own compositions. Next up is “Foolish Man” with award-winning

playwright, songwriter and musician, David King performing with Peter Hill on guitar. Following the break is Sherryl Latimer, this month’s spoken word artist followed

by Ken Dalgleish on piano as he accompanies another local favourite, vocalist Wanda Nowicki.

Doors open at 7pm, showtime at 8pm and tickets are $10.

One area of discussion will be non-profit board governance and training. This will examine the various board models, how they differ, and which models work best for a variety of types of organizations. Smith believes this will be a good primer for those new to arts non-profit boards and an important refresher for those current board members.

Another workshop will look at fundraising and sponsorships; it will help participants understand the donor lifecycle and the requirements for donor administration.

Other sessions will examine how contracts, memo-

randums of understanding, fee-for-service agreements and operating agreements work. There will also be discussion of non-profit organization insurance requirements.

Over the forum’s lunch break, a “cultural roundtable” will be hosted. Participants will be asked to share stories, knowledge and ideas to help support collaboration among Coast-based arts and culture groups. Through these discussions, Smith is hoping participants can build a shared vision and understanding that will help the Coast’s cultural sector develop, diversify and expand. Connie Jordison

Learn the art of repair In a world overwhelmed with cheap disposable consumer goods, broken objects are all around us.

How does one repair a broken object? An economy of inexpensive disposable consumer goods has eliminated most local repair options.

Citizens have no choice but to look for other options.

The Sunshine Coast is fortunate to have many skilled tradespeople who volunteer in the ongoing series of Repair Cafes. Now, in what the Gibsons Public Art Gallery is calling the “Fine Art of Repair”, these tradespeople have offered to teach oth-

ers how to repair. This will be done in two workshops, scheduled at the gallery for Tuesday Feb. 26 and March 26, 7-8:30pm.

These unusual workshops are supported by funding grants from the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation, Town of Gibsons, and SCRD. Sessions are free for everyone. All are welcome to participate and learn through community conversations about repair. Challenges, failures, successes and solutions. Creative problem solving is an art form that can be shared and learned.

Chapman Lake drawdown rejected George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, announced Feb.7 that he has evaluated the Chapman Lake expansion project and after careful consideration, is not prepared to move forward with a park boundary amendment in Tetrahedron Provincial Park at this time.

As a result, the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s (SCRD) proposed expansion of the community water supply system infrastructure in the park cannot proceed.

As part of its long-term drinking water strategy, the SCRD was proposing that per-

manent piping be installed in Chapman Lake, as well as increasing the allowable drawdown of the lake.

BC Parks held consultations with the public and First Nations in the spring of 2018.

Most respondents were opposed to a boundary adjustment or park re-designation.

Based on the materials and feedback gathered during the public consultation process, as well as consideration of the necessity of the Chapman Lake expansion project, more work is required by the SCRD to revise its comprehensive regional water plan to significantly reduce or eliminate

the dependence on Chapman Lake as a source for additional water supply before considering a boundary amendment.

The SCRD is encouraged to continue researching alternative solutions beyond the use of Chapman Lake that will improve the existing water supply system. Under certain conditions, such as Stage 4 water restrictions during drought, the regional district will still be able to apply for temporary emergency amendments to employ a siphon system as it has done in recent years.

Tip of the Week: About 12 hours after Chiron entered Aries, the Sun entered Pisces on February 18. Although Chiron’s orbital cycle is about 50.5 years, due to its highly elliptical orbit, it will be in Aries for over 8 years! Since Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, when a planet enters it, it represents a new cycle. Chiron is sometimes regarded as an asteroid and other times as a planetoid and is also a Saturn–Uranus object because its perihelion lies in Saturn’s zone of control and its aphelion lies in that of Uranus. This lends to Chiron’s ‘maverick’ influence wherever it is placed in one’s chart and that point, and any planet closely aligned with it, is regarded as wounded somehow, yet may also host unique healing gifts and orientations. Since Chiron was discovered in 1977, humanity has never consciously experienced it in Aries which has a way of ‘igniting’ a whole new pioneering venture.
