Sechelt council apparently wants a new logo for the District of Sechelt, but it’s not sure which one of these it wants. Although the council did not vote expressly to adopt a new logo, it did vote on Dec. 18 to ask for more information on how these three “S” logos would look as a vehicle decal, a social media post and in other uses. These logos would align with a similar community logo, developed through the same process and embraced by community groups such as the Sechelt Downtown Business Association. If the council decides to go ahead with one of these “S” logos, it would replace the current “bacon and eggs” logo. DISTRICT OF SECHELT ILLUSTRATIONS

Million-dollar homes now worth $2 Sechelt’s ongoing evacuation order was a determining factor in BC Assessment’s reduction of assessed values of Seawatch neighbourhood properties. Most of these parcels had their land and structure values reduced to the minimum in the 2020 assessments, released Jan. 1.

For a property with a home on it, the new assessed value is $2, down from the $1 million range in 2019.

Brian Smith, deputy assessor at the BC Assessment Authority, said: “With the sinkholes, the evacuation order and the fact that the properties are not liveable, we felt that significantly impacted their market value.” There were no sales of the impacted properties during the year to base valuations on. Smith explained that the $2 valuations are an indication that if someone were to look at purchasing these properties they would be taking on a liability as well as additional challenges and costs related to repairs.

With property tax rates set

per thousand dollars of assessed value, properties with single digit assessed values would be charged no property taxes in 2020. (2019 parcel taxes levied by Sechelt and the SCRD for water and wastewater services on the evacuated properties were waived. In 2019, parcel taxes accounted for about 14 per cent of the owners’ total property tax bills. Waivers for 2020 parcel charges have not yet been discussed by Sechelt council or the SCRD board.)

The assessment adjustments made to this point for the Seawatch area could have an estimated $15 million impact on the value of the 2020 property tax base for Sechelt.

The assessed value of two parcels of undeveloped land within the evacuation area were not minimized. Smith said the assessment authority is still reviewing this situation and may make additional adjustments to the value of these and surrounding properties. BC Assessment has until Jan. 31 to make these

adjustments. Changes can be made based on appeals by the property owners or reviews by the authority itself.

When asked if there has been a comparable situation with assessment minimizations for a specific area, Smith cited Chilliwack’s Marble Hill Road neighbourhood. In 2004, part of this area became unbuildable due to ground instability.

The municipality purchased and demolished three homes deemed to be unsafe. Other homes continued to be lived in. Smith noted that these properties had their assessed values reduced to minimum levels. Some have since seen these rebound, but not to the same level as other neighbourhoods in that community.

“Each situation is unique and each year is a new assessment. If the evacuation order is lifted, the houses become livable and owners can obtain insurance on them, then the market value would change,” said Smith.

The tide was high and so were the spirits of those gathered for the 2020 New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim at Davis Bay. Tides in the area peaked just before noon on Jan. 1, coinciding with the start of the Sunshine Coast Lion’s Club event. This resulted in only about seven feet of beach space between the rocky sloped sides of the area’s seawall and the water’s edge.

Most of those who entered the water did so at the ramp near the pedestrian pier.

Spring-like weather, with bright sun, very little wind and an air temperature of 11 degrees helped bring out a crowd estimated at 200, which was comparable in size to previous years. Observers lined the seawall and pier, cheering on swimmers in five categories. Prizes were awarded to the first three competitors in each class who were able to venture out into the chilly waters past a marker located near midpoint along the pier’s length and return to the beach. The first-place youth finisher was Ava Hind. Heather Benko won the teen division. The adult category saw a tie for

first place between Lorren Benko and Aaron Beckingham. In the master’s class for entrants over 55 years of age, Taylor Hutchinson was the first to complete the course.

The swimmers representing the Dagenais family were the winners of the family group.

Ali Khan Homes, Canadian Tire and the Flemming and Sombrowski Law Office helped the club sponsor the free public event. Participant prizes were donated by a number of local businesses.

Stroud also sent out thanks to local musician Jim Taylor, who was on hand to help entertain the crowd. “His music keeps us all moving,” said Stroud.

Understanding dementia Sechelt and other Sunshine Coast residents living with dementia are going public for a third consecutive year in an effort to change hearts and minds and tackle the ongoing discrimination they experience in their day-to-day lives.

Like many Canadians, they are courageously stepping forward with their personal stories in the Alzheimer Society’s nation-wide campaign, “I live with dementia. Let me help you understand.” It launched January 6 as part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

Spurred by alarming research indicating that one in four Canadians would feel ashamed or embarrassed if they had dementia, the campaign gives a voice to Canadians living with dementia who are frustrated by the constant assumptions and misinformation associated with the disease.

“Unless you have experienced it firsthand, it can be difficult to appreciate the damage stigma can do to individuals and families facing dementia,” says Marjaneh Amir-Sheibini, support and education coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of BC’s regional resource centre that serves Sechelt and the rest of the Sunshine Coast.

“Too often, negative feelings, attitudes and stereotypes surrounding dementia dissuade people from seeking help and discourage others from lending their support. By providing a platform for Canadians to share their stories, we can cultivate empathy and compassion and help break down the stigma so that Canadians living with dementia can live a full life.”

Since the launch of the campaign in 2018, more than 65 Canadians with dementia, including caregivers, have become spokespeople in the campaign, aimed at taking a stand against the stigma associated with the disease.

The site also features practical information and downloadable materials, including key myths and facts about the disease, as well as social media graphics to help spread the word about the campaign. Visitors to the site can also connect with their local Alzheimer Society for help and support.

Through a host of programs and services, advocacy and public education, Alzheimer Societies across the country are there to help Canadians overcome the challenges of living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

The society also funds research to improve care and find new treatments and a cure.

More than half a million Canadians are living with dementia today. In the next 12 years, nearly a million Canadians will be living with dementia.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Support shortsighted (Re “Time to just do it”, letters, the Local, Dec. 19) It’s disappointing that a physician who has experienced first-hand the Coast’s acute care crisis imagines it will be reduced if Vancouver Coastal Health turns long-term care into a money-making enterprise.

There is ample evidence that privatization not only jeopardizes the quality of senior care, but damages the public health system in the process.

According to a 2018 report by BC Seniors Care Advocate Isobel Mackenzie, compared to residents of public care centres, those in private facilities are 32 per cent more likely to end up in emergency and 34 per cent more likely to be hospitalized. They remain in hospital 32 per cent longer and are 47 per cent more likely never to return to the facilities from which they came.

Worse, they are 54 per cent more likely to die in hospital.

The report spells out other consequences of for-profit care providers offloading ill patients to the public system. According to Mackenzie, if contracted care facilities performed as well as publicly owned and operated ones, the health care system would save $16 million and increase capacity by 15,481 bed days annually.

Dr. Petzold wrongly believes that VCH will hold Trellis accountable for any deviations from the expected standard of care.

As Mackenzie recently told CBC, “(r)ight now, there’s no incentive for a care home provider to be better than the next care home or to be excellent from a financial perspective. They get paid the same.”

In recent weeks, three Retirement Concepts facil-

ities on Vancouver Island have been put under direct administration following multiple ongoing care violations. The only other available remedy is to revoke a facility’s operating licence, in which case residents would be left homeless.

Dr. Petzold is reassured that Trellis’ Kamloops facility has received an exemplary rating. He neglects to add that Trellis has also been cited for major care violations and has an egregious history of contract-flipping.

Furthermore, when Trellis President Mary McDougall was president and CEO of Retirement Concepts, the chain was the subject of so many complaints that authorities temporarily froze admissions at two of its facilities.

During McDougall’s tenure the company was found guilty of using deceptive corporate practices to circumvent fair collective bargaining at its Nanaimo location. It speaks volumes that the year after Retirement Concepts was hit with a $700,000 fine for violations of the Employment Standards Act, the company won an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Dr. Petzold also glosses over the implications of privatization on volunteer services. If care were privatized, the Healthcare Auxiliary’s contribution of medical equipment would come to an end, leaving many families on the hook for thousands of dollars.

Yes, Dr. Petzold, constant overcrowding has created an unhealthy and unsafe environment for patients and staff at Sechelt Hospital, but to suggest the situation can be improved by privatizing long-term care is shortsighted and frankly harmful.

Think of the fish We think the Davis Bay/ Wilson Creek/Selma Park Community Association made a good point to try out an 18-month moratorium on sport fishing and crabbing on the Davis Bay pier.

It is disgusting the mess people leave behind. My husband and I never walk the pier anymore because of this. It seems the pier belongs to the fishing and crabbing people. We cannot enjoy the view anymore; it’s upsetting how the “by catch” is flung back so hard they will die from the hard landing.

We have to give nature a chance to make a comeback. We do not want our beaches and oceans fished and crabbed empty, like Vancouver. Remember a few years back we had a gray whale feeding close in to our shoreline? Will we ever see that again if there is no natural food for them and other species to feed on? An 18-month moratorium is a good start and after that a more controlled fishery can be reinstated. It’s not just for humans; we have many other species who are depending on it for their survival.

Consult with customers (Sent to Gibsons council and copied to the Local) My neighbour told me they received a letter telling them you were spending more money hiring someone to tell you if the Gibsons District Energy Utility (GDEU) is worth continuing.

In February 2017, after the geothermal system crashed, your director of engineering told the Parkland residents: “We’re in the process of engaging a geo-energy engineer to review the system, the incident and

provide an independent report to staff and council.”

On June 5, 2017, in a letter to the residents, the mayor told us they hadn’t engaged the geo-energy engineer that was promised, but had engaged a professional mechanical engineer that – according to their web page – had no previous experience in community geo-energy engineering systems before they worked on the GDEU, but they had attended some seminars. Their analysis of the GDEU resulted in them recommending installing natural gas boilers and new pumps. This was not sent out for bids and they were awarded the contract ($161,760).

On Nov. 4, 2019 you told us you spent $25,000 to have a consultant update a non-existent (according to Mr. Machado, April 18, 2017) business plan.

The only people that you have not consulted in the three years since the system crashed, leaving them without heat for three weeks, are the Parkland customers. Most of them do not know that the GDEU is now not the “green” geothermal system they are paying for, or what the true condition of the plant is in relation to leaks etc., or what plans the town has in place if there is another failure like February 2017.

Before you spend another penny, have a meeting with them.

About 60 members of the public attended the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society’s Lighting of the Memories gathering on Jan. 1 on the beach at Sechelt’s Mission Point Park. This event is part of the society’s work to provide emotional support to those experiencing the grief that can accompany the death or diagnosis of terminal illness in a loved one.

The society hosted its first memory lighting ceremony on the Coast in 1993. At the annual New Year’s Day gathering, written messages from

Project proponent BC Housing says it anticipates completing the $14 million facility in the first half of 2020. Gibsons council members and senior staff were part of a conference call with BC Housing officials on Dec. 19. This was a discussion of the next steps for the project, including the establishment of the community liaison committee for the facility.

The message cards were gathered during the campaign which runs between mid-November and mid-December at Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons and Trail Bay Centre in Sechelt. It serves as an opportunity for those experiencing grief related to death to speak society volun-

teers, to share their feelings, to write about them, and to see their message help adorn a tree of remembrance.

The lighting ceremony began with two songs performed by members of the Threshold Choir. This group of female vocalists are part of the society’s support network. Arrangements can be made through the society to have a singer to provide comfort at the bedsides of those at the threshold between life and death. More information at coasthospice.com.

Ten individuals spent the night of Dec. 25 at the Gibsons cold weather shelter at 464 South Fletcher Road.

Along with their evening meal, they were given gift bags including presents, snacks and treats provided

by Langdale Elementary.

“That felt so special as it was a big push to get that facility open. We are very grateful to the Town of Gibsons and all in the community that helped us make all this possible,” said Malmgren.

That facility began its operations in a Town-owned facility on Dec. 1 after a fire damaged the Salvation Army site where it had planned to operate. It is open seven days a week from 6pm to 8am. A hot meal is served nightly at 6:30pm.

Sechelt’s cold weather shelter, which has a 21-person capacity, hosted 11 cli-

ents over Christmas day and evening. Howe Sound Pharmacy provided gift bags and winter jackets for the shelter’s clients. Donations were also welcomed from the Seniors Activity Centre as well as other individuals and groups.

This facility, located on Wharf Road is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Individuals using the shelter in Gibsons on the night of Dec. 24 were offered the option of spending daytime hours in the Sechelt facility.

Only two made use of this offer.

The Sunshine Coast Rotary Club donated gift cards to the clients of both shelter facilities.

According to Malmgren, usage at the shelter in Gibsons has been about double the levels seen in past years.

Isaac Malmgren, associate director of RainCity Housing, which manages the area’s shelter services, said most of the clients of the facilities have family or friends living locally. A number of these individuals were able to arrange to spend nights in private homes over the holidays.

Hot turkey dinners were offered to clients on Christmas Day at the shelter locations in Gibsons and Sechelt, as well as at the RainCity-managed Hightide supportive housing complex in Sechelt. Hightide residents participated in a variety of seasonal events at that location, including a tree trimming and winter solstice get-together on Dec. 21, movie nights, a Christmas Eve communal meal and a Christmas morning

On Jan. 4, a group of quilters at a facility in the 5600 block of Trail Avenue, Sechelt, reported a suspicious male had entered the building, yelled at the group and then attempted to steal a set

of car keys off a table. The suspect then tried to flee the scene but was detained by several members of the group until the suspect released the keys. The suspect then ran off but was later lo-

cated nearby at Hackett Park.

The suspect, who is known to police, was arrested for Theft Under $5,000.00. The file is still under investigation.

On Dec.16, Sunshine Coast RCMP were called to a report that a shipping container containing tools at a construction site had been broken into in the 5100 block of Sunshine Coast Highway in Sechelt.

West Coast Log Homes and Dakota Ridge builders had saws, drills, air nailers etc stolen. Most of the tools stolen will have tags with the company name, West Coast Log Homes affixed as shown in the photo.

This theft occurred sometime over the weekend between Dec. 13 and 16. If anyone has any information

about this theft or if anyone in that area has surveillance cameras that would cover the 5100 block of Sunshine

Coast highway, please call the RCMP or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

BC’s Speculation and Vacancy Tax was raised to two per cent in 2019, and 2020 is the first year in which affected owners will be hit with the full bill.

If you own a home in the City of Vancouver, you may also be subject to an additional one-per-cent vacancy tax. Foreign buyers could also be hit with an additional property transfer tax of 20 per cent when buying in parts of British Columbia.

The Sunshine Coast is exempt from each of these taxes but does this mean we should expect an increase in foreign buyers investing in the Sunshine Coast in 2020?

Being the second oldest demographic in BC (Parksville on Vancouver Island being the first) the vast majority of buyers in our market are Canadians retiring here to enjoy the healthy lifestyle and low crime rate. We see a lot of people relocating from Alberta and Ontario, especially after particularly snowy

many residents of the Sunshine Coast have had a roof over their head and a place to call home. Homelessness was an issue on the Sunshine Coast when I was first elected, and finally a government has made significant investments to begin to address the problem. From Langdale to Lund, there will be 140 new apartments providing warm, safe, and supported living for residents of the Coast whose lack of a place to live has had negative repercussions on everyone. In addition to improving peoples’ quality of life, these supported housing programs demonstrate our Province’s concern about social issues; poverty, homelessness, addiction and soaring income inequality.

Since I was elected in 2005 our communities have been advocating for a high-level Land and Resource Management Plan to help us make decisions about resource management and environmental

protections. We are still the only part of the Province without such a plan, and it shows in the number of conflicts we have over mining exploration, forestry operations, and park and natural resource protections. This year I hope that the Province and the shíshálh Nation will begin to take this step together as laid out in the provisions of the historic Foundation Agreement, which when fully implemented will lead to economic predictability while respecting Indigenous rights and incorporating the environmental protections we need.

After leaving ocean and greenery behind, entering Dakota Ridge is like landing in a winter wonderland where forested trails envelop you, bluffs with inspiring views cause you to pause, and the community of outdoor enthusiasts embraces you.

It consists of a 1,532-acre plateau that tops out at 1,200 metres and is treed with old-growth hemlock, balsam and yellow cedar. And it’s hard not to be distracted by the views of Vancouver Is-

land, the Gulf Islands and the North Shore mountains.

Although the 14-kilometre road to Dakota Ridge is plowed on a regular basis, four-wheel drive vehicles with chains are recommended.

In recent years, the area has attracted over 8,000 visitors per year and its success is due to the energy and enthusiasm of volunteers, the strong support of various community groups, service providers, and local outdoor businesses and schools, and the dedicated SCRD staff who manage the road and trails.

In this New Year, I invite you to take some time to explore Dakota Ridge and all our recreation opportunities available within our region.

The next largest group of buyers are first and second-time home buyers with young families moving away from Greater Vancouver, the North Shore specifically, and landing here for the same reasons. Busy times for these buyers are between spring and summer, before school starts.

Due to the high cost of commercial real estate in Vancouver, many companies are encouraging telecommuting and the Sunshine Coast is well equipped with high speed internet and reliable power for professionals looking to take advantage of this trend. Removing the need to commute into Vancouver daily allows for much more work life balance and makes living on the Coast more realistic and sustainable endeavor.

Contrary to what seems to be a common misconception however, we do not see a lot of foreign buyers buying and holding property on the Coast. Based on the latest numbers I have reviewed, less than two per cent of property bought on the Sunshine Coast is owned and held by foreign buyers.

There are programs in

place on the to attract foreign buyers to the Sunshine Coast, such as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Entrepreneur Immigration Regional Pilot. This program is designed to attract international entrepreneurs to buy and establish business in regional communities.

For more information about this program you can visit http://investsunshinecoast. ca/ These immigrants would be living and working in the community so the tax exemptions would likely not be a factor in their decision to invest in the Sunshine Coast.

It is much more likely that relocating Canadians will take advantage of these exemptions as if they are looking to buy a vacation home, a second home, or an investment property in the Lower Mainland; buying on BC’s Sunshine Coast could mean saving a substantial amount of money that would otherwise need to be paid in taxes.

Bill Climie, a Special O curling coach for 13 years on the Coast, has retired. He first discovered S.O. while living in Unionville, Ontario at a playoff bonspiel. “One of the finals was between two Special O teams and I was so impressed with their enthusiasm and joy of the game that I determined then, that if an opportunity to get involved presented itself, I would certainly sign up.”

When Bill moved to the Sunshine Coast, he became president of the Gibsons Curling Club in 2006. “One day, speaking with Bob Ware, I became aware that the local Special O gang had lost one of their sports when the bowling alley closed. I asked Bob if he thought that they might be interested in curling. He explored our offer with the executive, and they were in favour of trying it. So, along with a half dozen other vol-

The time of regional qualifiers is upon us. This begins anew the four-year cycle for regional, provincial, national and world competitions.

Overwhelmed and frustrated, he introduces a lacrosse program.

The seed for this film was planted in 2007 when ESPN aired a segment on the Grizzlies lacrosse team. It was seen by Major League Lacrosse founder Jake Steinfeld, who was so moved he contacted Sheppard. Together they eventually managed to interest Hollywood executive Frank Marshall (“Indiana Jones”, “Back to the Future”, “Bourne Conspiracy”) in producing the film.

But this is no typical Hollywood film, or sports film for that matter.

Bill first became interested in curling when he was attending high school, “Vancouver at Magee High School.

It was an option in our physical education course. I took it and loved it. Some years later, I met my wife at an Esso bonspiel and we’ve been together for 55 years now.”

“Future curling coaches, who love and understand the game, will enjoy passing their knowledge on to an enthusiastic group of athletes who are in our Special Olympics programs. You will gain much more than you give.”
