Okay, maybe it has not reached “mania” levels yet, but there is much interest in lanterns. Consider that these people were among about 100 people who turned up at Sunnycrest Mall on July 10 to make lanterns – a full week before the July 27 Gibsons Lantern Festival. The festival has been organized as a partial substitute for the Sea Cavalcade, which was cancelled this year due to a lack of volunteers. Where in previous years there has been waterfront fireworks– even the deliberate explosion and sinking of boats – there will, this year, be a procession of lanterns along the waterfront. There is no fire involved; the lanterns are LED tea lights inside paper mache domes. And there will be another lantern-making workshop – with materials supplied – at Winegarden Park at 4pm, prior to the procession. LAURA HOULE PHOTO
