PODS nearing approval by SCRD The proponents and supporters of the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS) are one board meeting away from SCRD approval of their project at the former Irvine’s Landing Pub site. At the June 13 planning and community development committee a recommendation that the board consider third reading and adoption of the Official Community Plan amendment needed for the project was passed. Board consideration is slated for its June 27 meeting.

At the committee meeting staff reviewed the results of public information meetings, the public hearing held on May 14, and various public submissions received.

The majority of the committee’s discussion focused on the parking strategy for the proposed development.

The PODS facility will include an auditorium, gift shop, presentation centre,

research and diving facilities.

A total of 90 vehicle parking spaces would be required to accommodate workers and visitors to the station. The proponents propose including 51 parking spaces on the site. Additional parking will be located nearby with a shuttle available to bring visitors to the site. Area D Director Andreas Tize made an amendment to the conditions regarding the operation of a shuttle bus. His view was that requiring the shuttle to operate “at all times when the auditorium is operational” was too prescriptive. The committee agreed and the recommendation was changed to ask that the shuttle be “available” during these times.

Another concern was related to parking signage, which will come under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI). Staff noted that although there is

no mechanism for the SCRD to require MOTI to install and maintain the requested signage, they are confident MOTI will comply as part of the working relationship the two entities share.

The male is described as Caucasian, skinny, approximately 5’7”, 25-30 years old, dark hair with long bangs and no facial hair. The male was wearing blue jeans, blue shoes and a brown hoody with the hood up.

Other witnesses believe they have seen this male loitering around the Petro Canada in Gibsons.

The board of School District #46 adopted its 2019/20 budget at its meeting on June 12.

The budget will see spending of $49.8 million. Costs for student instruction accounts for $39.3 million. Operating and maintaining schools and other district facilities will cost $6.6 million.

District administration costs will total just over $2.3 million in the coming school year. This amount includes an eight-per-cent increase to the trustee stipends, effective Sept. 1. The increase was recommended by the district’s trustee honorarium committee. This committee was comprised of seven current board members, along with representatives of the administration and CUPE Local 801.

The change, which the board also approved at the meeting, is designed to offset the impacts of federal taxation changes. Committee member and trustee Stacia Leech explained that in 2019 a provision that had allowed a third of a trustee’s stipend to be non-taxable was eliminated.

That change resulted in a net pay loss of between $1,000 and $1,800 per year to board members.

“Fifty-two of 60 BC school districts have adopted similar stipend changes,” said Leech.

She noted that the tax change also impacts local government council members and that Sechelt and Gibsons made similar adjustments to their stipend levels. She reported

that trustee stipend amount in the district were mid-range compared to other BC School Districts.

Trustee Maria Hampvent opposed the adoption of the 2019/20 budget. She said she felt further discussion was needed. She stated she felt there had been insufficient community involvement in the budget development process.

The district’s 2019-23 strategic plan and 2020-21 fiveyear capital plan proposal to the ministry of education were also endorsed at the meeting. The capital plan is asking for $10.4 million for a six-classroom addition at West Sechelt Elementary and for just under $4 million for four additional classrooms at Gibsons Elementary. The remainder of the $26.2 million capital request would be used to address issues at existing facilities, such as heating upgrades, roof repairs and the addition of accessible facilities to school playgrounds.

by Kerry Mahlman, district principal of Aboriginal education. Students from a number of schools spoke to the board about their experiences within the aboriginal studies program. On June 5 Sunshine Coast RCMP received a report that a woman walking in Mahan Trails off Shaw Road had seen a male with his genitals exposed out the zipper of his jeans.

The complainant had seen him at approximately 5:45pm walking in the trail and had a bad feeling about him. When she saw him approaching another woman in the trail she turned around and this time saw that he was exposing himself while he was walking. The complainant yelled at the male but he did not respond and walked away.

He was a walk-on Overnight on June 16, a suspect stole an insecure vehicle with the key inside that was parked at a residence in the 1100 block of Rosamund Road, Gibsons. Prior to the vehicle owner calling the police, police received

a report of an abandoned suspicious vehicle at the Langdale BC Ferries Terminal and it was determined that this was the stolen vehicle. The file is still under investigation.

Green party hopefuls make their pitch Two men seeking the federal Green Party’s nomination spoke with a group of about 25 area residents at the Gibsons Public Market on June 11.

Dana Taylor and Lars Guinard each introduced themselves and outlined why they were seeking to represent the Greens in the riding in the Oct. 21 federal election.

Guinard, who was raised and still resides on the Sunshine Coast spoke first. He opened by stating that is not a politician. He outlined his background as a self-starter and a veteran of the gig economy, as a writer of books, including a past number-one selling book on Amazon, and screenplays. He believes this has equipped him to work with others and deal with the uncertainties of life as an elected representative.

Taylor, a resident of West Vancouver, remarked in his opening that he is looking to represent the Greens after a 38-year career in the construction sector. He was elected to two two-year terms on North Vancouver city council and ran for the Greens in the 2017 provincial election. In that race, he collected 29 per cent of the vote, finishing second to incumbent Liberal Jordan Sturdy. A former board member of the “Save Howe Sound Society”, Taylor campaigned for regulation changes which resulted in a reduction of pulp mill

dioxins and furans flowing into the Sound.

When asked how the party should engage with millennials, Guinard responded, “avocado toast”, generating audience laughter. He went on to state that he felt the millennials, now in their late twenties and early thirties, were well engaged with the Green Party. He believes the greater challenge will be attracting the attention of voters in their late teen to early twenties. Guinard suggest-

ed “to go where they are” by campaigning with YouTube and Instagram.

A question was asked about where the potential candidates thought they would be strongest if the party assigned the items in its 20-point “Mission Possible” plan as elected member portfolios. Taylor indicated his strength would be in the area of green building techniques and retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency.

Take it on the road A new BC Hydro report finds misconceptions about electric vehicle (EV) range for out-of-town trips is preventing the majority of British Columbians from purchasing one – even though most road trips are within the range of the latest models.

The report entitled “Electric highway: Road trip range anxiety is pumping the brakes on EV adoption in BC” finds close to 70 per cent of British Columbians are hesitant to purchase an EV because they do not think it can be taken on out-of-town road trips. However, the majority of the road trips taken by British Columbians are less than 300 kilometres one-way – the range many of the latest most popular EVs can travel on a single charge.

A survey commissioned by BC Hydro found besides range, one of the main concerns for the seven in 10 British Columbians that would be hesitant to road trip in an EV is the availability of charging stations along the route.

BC Hydro has a network of 58 fast-charging stations in the province that allow EV drivers to travel from Tofino to the Alberta border.

The survey found another top concern for some British Columbians around taking a road trip in an EV is having to stop and charge, and thinking it would add significantly to a trip’s duration. However, there are over 270 fast-charging stations in the province, which includes those in BC Hydro’s network, that charge the average EV battery to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. Only seven per cent of British Columbians on a road trip of more than 300 kilometres in a gas-powered vehicle will drive as far as they can without stopping. Most on this length of trip will make stops in addition to stopping to fuel, for a meal or bathroom break.

For EV drivers looking to take a road trip this summer, BC Hydro recommends these tips: • Plan ahead: map out the route and the locations of charging stations using a mobile app provided by a EV charging station provider.

• Know when to charge: an EV should be charged when it reaches close to 75 per cent of its range to help ensure peace of mind and reduce stress if the unexpected happens.

• Avoid unnecessary accelerating: cruise control is recommended when travelling on highways to help keep the vehicle at a steady pace as the more unnecessary accelerations, the faster the battery will deplete.

• Control the temperature: keep the A/C at a low level or use it intermittently; blasting it can decrease the vehicle’s range.

(Re “Mind the falling anvil” editorial, the Local, June 13) Doctor Suzuki ponders roadrunners, coyotes and falling anvils, asking “Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on?”

Here’s what’s up, doc.

Although 97 per cent of climatologists agree that human activity has caused drastic climate change, 98 per cent of physicists would likely admit the universe has no inherent purpose (notwithstanding a seeming orderliness in our small corner); and while only 99 per cent of scientists might acknowledge that foregoing fossil fuels will reduce daily life to something unrecognizably bleak, 100 per cent of mathematicians can confirm that when most parents (even those who should know better) have more than two children, and then linger on to see their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, population growth will be dangerously exponential.

The age-old fear that “the world is coming to an end” (never more eloquently postulated as by Henny Penny) is a loony tune. We live today to argue about how to “save” the planet in part because the ancient Greeks and Malthusians failed to save it over similar concerns. Planetary evolution is a mostly slow but sometimes sudden response to local conditions in a 13-billion-year-old universe.

There is no pre-ordained straight line that it is “supposed” to follow. The planet will change, and life with it.

Ice ages. Earthquakes. Volcanoes. Floods. Asteroids.

Sunspots. Plagues. Humanity was never the centre of anything.

The dream of eight billion people marching to a glob-

al environmental agenda is a delusion, and a leadership instating draconian controls over eight billion people would lead only to nightmare.

Uh-b’dee-ub’dee, uh – that’s all (that’s going on), folks!

EVs cheaper, nicer

(Re “EV costs misleading”, letters, the Local, June 6) I have been an EV owner now for over five years.

A quick web search came quickly to a 2017 report from the AAA. At which time it was found that on average EVs yearly cost of ownership was $8,439 as compared to an industry average for all vehicles of $8,469. In other words, EVs costing slightly less.

But that was two years ago, and it should be obvious that costs related to vehicle ownership are subject to wide fluctuations subject to specific product choices and energy costs. Clearly gasoline costs at the local pumps are at record highs, while costs related to EVs are down trending. Further, my tendency is to discount the costs mentioned regarding battery life and cost replacement. Simply most issues of any battery replacements would be covered by warranty replacements given typical manufacturer’s coverage. And the reality is that most vehicles reaching 10 years and older have little market value.

Perhaps now for some real numbers based on my first EV purchase. It’s been very simple. My monthly loan payments based on a five-year term, along with electricity costs and maintenance have been approximately $275 per month ($3,300 per year) for use of a vehicle ranging typically 2,500 km per month

(30,000 km per year). Albeit, this is for a SmartCar EV that replaced an older SmartCar diesel. The diesel SmartCar had no loan payments, but monthly costs of $200 to run. And with that EV loan almost completed, then the monthly costs will be down to about $40 for electric fuel and maintenance.

But much of this bantering about which numbers are correct or more correct might best be described as quibbling. All EVs on the market are more pleasurable in terms of the ride experience when compared to their equivalent conventional ICE (internal combustion engine) counterparts.

Smoke gets in

Once more, I need to speak to the summer challenge of air quality and campfires. I live near the Roberts Creek Campground and most of the more than 20 campsites are host to a fire almost every night of the season.

Those who enjoy having campfires often shuffle themselves around throughout the experience in order to avoid getting smoke in their eyes and lungs. However, I am unable to shuffle my house out of the way. It is in direct line of the offshore breeze as it heads toward the water taking the smoke with it every evening.

Each year we are grateful when the weather is cool and damp enough to encourage us to shut our widows at night but the particles and the smell still seep into the house. Itchy, burning eyes, dust and difficulty breathing are only some of the challenges we face.

The heat waves that we have experienced over the past few years are much

worse yet we stay huddled in our house in front of fans every night, unable to take advantage of even the slightest natural breeze. As a result, our house often doesn’t get the chance to cool down overnight because the smoke can linger until well into the wee hours.

I remain impressed that the neighbourhood near the Porpoise Bay campgrounds was able to have the rules changed so that group fire pits were created instead of individual ones and as a result, much less smoke spewed into the surrounding houses. It is a solution that is possible in Roberts Creek but to date there has been no will to make the change. The campground would lend itself nicely to a lovely group fire pit right beside the stream that flows through its edge. It would be safer, cleaner and a way to keep all of us happy.

I love my community but I do wish that my health and well-being took priority over the romance of the campfire at every site.

Top earners at Sechelt district hall Sechelt’s chief administrative officer, Andrew Yeates, was the top salary earner at the District in 2018, at just over $168,000 plus expenses and benefits. The salaries of all district employees earning over $75,000 are reported in its 2018 statement of financial information, which was slated to come before council at its June 19 meeting. The statement can be viewed as part of the agenda for that meeting on Sechelt.ca.

The 2018 salaries of 16 staffers are listed, and they range from $78,319 to $168,597. Members of the management team, senior staff in information technology, communications and engineering departments, along with employees at the Water Resource Centre, earned salaries in that range. These employees were reimbursed for expenses ranging from $6,458 to $218 last year. They also received employment benefits including extended medical and dental coverage, employer pension contributions and life and disability insurance.

Despite these compensation levels, five of the sixteen top earning employees in the district in 2018 have left or

are in the process of leaving their positions. Tracy Corbett, director of planning and Doug Stewart, director of corporate and financial services, have both tendered their resignations. Perry Schmitt, parks manager, and Doug Kopp, sewer plant operator, have retired and are transitioning into part time employment with the district.

The deer defence On June 16, police attended a single vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Lower Road, Roberts Creek. Upon arrival, police were approached by the driver who advised she’d swerved to try to avoid a deer. Witnesses reported that the driver had been texting before suddenly accelerating and driving into the ditch. Police

noted that the driver was exhibiting signs of alcohol intoxication. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-Day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC. Submitted by RCMP

Charlotte Gibson, nee Charlotte Augusta Purdee (1839 1910) is known not only as a founder of Gibsons Landing but as a skilled midwife and nurse. The details of Charlotte’s birth and background in the U.S. are contested, but we know that she married George Gibson in 1859 at age 19 and moved to Ontario. By the time she arrived in Gibsons Landing in 1886 she had given birth to eight children.

The Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives currently displays a glass oil lamp of turquoise blue inset with pressed flowers which Charlotte Gibson brought with her from Ontario. Its value rests not only in its translucent beauty but the fact that several babies were born with the help of its light. The BC Archives hold 40 registered births on the Sunshine Coast between 1889 and 1903. Thirty-three of these birth registrations have been

scanned and digitized for public view. These 33 documents detail such information as the birthweight and medical attendant present.

Of these 33 births, Mrs. Gibson is listed as midwife to 15 births – eight of which were her own grandchildren.

(Charlotte’s daughter “Lottie” McCombs is also recorded as a midwife.) Only four of the 33 births were attended by a physician, and six had no medical attendant present.

If these 33 documents are to be taken as a representative sampling of the 40 total registered births in the early settler period, it is clear that Charlotte was an active midwife in the community.

Like Charlotte, many women in the Victorian era put their child-birthing skills to work as midwives. The other professions open to women not raising large broods of children included teaching, nursing, domestic service and dressmaking. In rural settlements like the Sunshine Coast, the services of a midwife were most likely remunerated through the barter system. It is said that Charlotte utilized a medical resource book, which has sadly

not survived the ages.

Florence Nightingale was the first to open a school for midwifery in 1861. The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care at King’s College, London England still operates today. Midwives traditionally presided over births which took place at home alongside female relatives and neighbours. Though a respected profession in Charlotte’s day, midwifery experienced a sharp fall in status coincident with the growing medicalization of birth.

Here birth was seen as an illness necessitating hospital intervention, rather than an intimate natural process best supported with holistic consideration of mind, body and spirit. It wasn’t until the 1960s that midwifery regained social acceptance through feminist interest in women-supported home births. By the 1990s most Canadian provinces began to regulate and integrate midwifery into the public healthcare system. No longer maligned and marginalized, midwives, have been fully incorporated into mainstream maternity care.

Writing is about much more than CBC “writers to watch” or bestseller lists. The need to write doesn’t typically come from professional ambition, but from a deeper desire to share a story, to write ourselves or something we care about into the world.

While writing is usually a solo activity, it can connect us to a wider community through workshops, book clubs, open mics and more.

To better support the personal growth and community-building potential of writing, the Gibsons Public Library has launched “Enriching Words: Library Writing Series”, generously sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union. We will offer 10 writing workshops over the course of the year, ranging in topics and genres. The first of

these took place in April with poet Isabella Wang.

The second, “Share Your Gift” with Kwantlen poet/ playwright Joseph Dandurand, happens Saturday, June 22, 1 pm at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, as part of the Sechelt Nation’s Cultural Crawl. Joseph Dandurand is the author of 13 books of poetry, and recently completed a stint as the Vancouver Public Library’s Storyteller in Residence. Last week’s Coast papers were filled with vexed and vexatious letters from the “NIMBY� cohorts and the “open to economic growth� cohorts of Gibsons. I will attest to being a member of the latter. I work in real estate, so a healthy economy and a community that is open and welcoming to new families and new citizens are important to me, and not just for earning a living. I want to live in a community that doesn’t lose all of its youth, that allows a person when they get to a certain age to sell their larger home and buy a single-level, age-in-place home in the community they love.

I don’t believe that pulling up the drawbridge once we have secured our million-dollar retirement home is generous, healthy or representative of

the majority of our citizens. It is the prerogative of the few, but a vocal few indeed.

I represent the Eagle View Heights project in Gibsons (which is relevant here because once again the town of Gibsons is being sued by a vocal few who are resisting having new neighbours); no views are compromised.

To defend against the suit brought by these few and apparently very well-financed neighbours, all Gibsons tax payers will foot the bill. Not exactly fair, but this is what a vocal and organized minority can accomplish, in pursuing their own self-interest.

But it is also worth looking at what else these few neighbours trying to prevent: an estimated $50 million investment in our community.

That investment means new jobs in multiple industries for the town of Gibsons.

It means increased financial security, employment and growth for our retail sector.

It means relieving the pres-

sure on our scarce real estate and rental inventory. Perhaps more than anything, it means we are finally creating much needed single-level housing for our older citizens, so that they can age in place, giving them a home to buy when they sell their larger multi-level homes, and a safe, secure community in which to live out their golden years.

It means supporting “all� income levels in our community, through the increased tax base that can be put toward services. It means having homes available for rental or purchase for families who wish to move here and raise their children in our beautiful and safe community. It means being welcoming and open – the kind of community we should aspire to be.

Sechelt’s troubled Wakefield Road area sewer main project may not be complete until July. Work to extend sanitary services in the Wakefield, Acorn and Gowland Road areas began last summer. It was scheduled to complete within six months. Construction issues, including a blasting error in December that stopped work pending a WorkSafe BC investigation, have dogged the project.

Area residents have experienced problems with the project as their property has been damaged by the blasting incident and other work done by contractor, Bear Creek Contracting Ltd. On April 8, representatives of Sechelt met with area residents. Assurances that all work would be done by the end of June were provided. Also at that meeting, Sechelt clarified the process for filing damage claims. Julie Rogers, Sechelt’s communications manager stated that they cannot confirm the numbers or amounts involved with the claims received until after a final inspection of the contractor’s work. That inspection is scheduled for June 20. “We planned to have the sewer extension across Wood Creek done under a separate

contract when the culvert work was done there. Unfortunately, the bids for that came in over our budget. We have now contracted with Maycon to complete the installation of the sanitary sewer main across Wood Creek.

They have scheduled the work for the week of June 17.

The last of the paving will be completed when the paving contractor is available which is anticipated to be late June or early July. Unfortunately, Sechelt is suffering much the same as all municipalities in BC with a shortage of qualified contractors. When grants for infrastructure become available, they are distributed to dozens of municipalities across BC. There is a great deal of competition to get contractors to do the work and often the bids come in higher than expected,“ said Rogers.

One thing that improved after the April meeting, according to area resident Cathy Kiss, is the district’s communication with the neighbourhood. “Sanath Bandara has been responding to residents’ questions and concerns directly. Residents will be dealing with Wakefield Road closures during the week of June 17. People who live north of Wood Creek are being asked to travel via Norwest Bay Road. Those living south of the creek are asked to access their properties via Highway 101.

This project was not responsible for damaging Fortis BC’s gas main in West Sechelt on June 11. That incident resulted from construction along Derby Road, between Norwest Bay and Baillie Roads, which is being done as part of the Silverstone Development. Gas service was temporarily interrupted to properties north and east of the intersection of Derby and Baillie Roads.

Trick or treat?

On June 13, police attended a multiple-shots-fired complaint in the 7600 block of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay, after a resident heard what sounded like three gun shots near Sargeants Bay Provincial Park. Police located a male in the area who admitted he’d set up some small firecrackers in the nearby marsh. The male was warned about the prospect of starting a fire and of the violation tickets and fines that could be issued as a result.

The male surrendered his remaining firecrackers to police for safe destruction.

Eat your way to better hair and skin Millions of people across the globe deal with conditions that affect the skin and hair. Acne is a skin and hair ailment that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is the most common skin condition in the United States.

But what if the foods people eat could affect the health of their hair and skin? There is evidence that they can. Foods that contain certain nutrients, phytochemicals and enzymes may help people develop healthier hair and skin.

The battle against bugs Outdoor entertaining has many advantages. Cooking on a grill can make it easier to feed a crowd, while fresh air can make any occasion more fun.

One pesky obstacle when entertaining outdoors is bugs. Nothing can ruin outdoor meals quite like insects.

Finding a gnat in your soft drink or ants coursing over your hot dog can quickly destroy your appetite.

It’s challenging but not impossible to deter insects from outdoor entertaining areas.

Here are some ways to do just that.

• Invest in shower caps.

Yes, those plastic caps that can be purchased at the pharmacy or even acquired free at your next hotel stay can serve as inexpensive food covers.

The elastic band holds them securely in place, and they can fit around everything from salad bowls to watermelon.

• Make a wasp repellent.

Work with nature by finding those things in nature that the offensive insect fears. In the case of wasps, it can be even larger stinging insects like hornets. Try filling a brown paper lunch bag with plastic bags and hang it near sitting and eating areas. The wasps may think the filled sack is a hornet’s nest, keeping them away.

• Rely on citrus. Surround entertaining areas with orange and lemon peels. The smells of the citrus oils will naturally repel certain insects. Mint is another aroma and flavor that insects tend to avoid. Spray mouthwash around eating areas as well.

• Disperse smells. Use fans to break up those appealing aromas from people and the food. Flying insects will be less likely to investigate.

• Use dryer sheets for more than just static cling.

Dryer sheets can be placed under table legs or rubbed on clothing. The chemicals in them repel ants and mosquitoes, according to the Untrained Housewife, a lifestyle resource.

• Drain stagnant water.

One way to minimize insects is to keep them from taking up residence in the yard.

Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. When they fill with water, empty flower pots, kiddie pools, overturned garden items, and bird baths.

The shíshálh Nation is celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day with a three day “cultural crawl” June 21-23 and everyone is invited. Lead organizer Dionne Paul has compiled a diverse schedule of activities and events to showcase the cultural history of the band and the skills and talents of its members. “Some people might be interested in the totem poles and paddle.

Some people might be interested in the arts and craft fair and burlesque show,” says Dionne. “Think of it as a cultural buffet. I’m setting the table and people can choose what they like.” Festivities begin Friday with tours of the tems swiya Museum and a Spoken Treasures walking tour. A syiyaya Reconcilation Honouring Feast takes place at the shíshálh Longhouse from 5-8pm followed by a moonlight paddle in Sechelt Inlet. Saturday and Sunday at the shíshálh Nation Hall there will be an Indigenous Craft Fair, featuring First Nations artisans, Native fine crafts and workshops including Heiltsuk artist Dean Hunt demonstrating traditional poke tattoo techniques. Saturday at 11am Kwantlen poet, playwright and storyteller Joseph A. Dandurand will give readings and tell stories in a

tipi outside the hall. The inclusion of other First Nations in the celebrations is a conscious decision. “We wanted to open it up so we could celebrate with Coast residents, First Nations and non-First Nations,” says Dionne. Raven’s Cry Theatre is hosting a screening of Capilano University Indigenous students’ short films, award-winning filmmaker Amanda Strong’s stop motion animations, and a live performance by Virago Nation Indigenous Burlesque Troupe Saturday afternoon.

A special outdoor screening of the film Smoke Signals, which features an all Indigenous cast, including Tla’amin (Powell River) actor Evan Adams, will take place at Ted Dixon Park at 9:30pm.

Also on offer throughout the weekend are cultural workshops highlighting shíshálh Nation artists who will be giving cedar weaving and wool weaving workshops that will be open to the public. “I want to inspire shíshálh Nation artists and youth, our storytellers and our traditional workers so that they can feel a sense of pride in what we have to offer,” says Dionne. “I also want to show the outside community that we have a spectrum from the traditional basket weaving to the very non-traditional burlesque and everything in between. All of it is valid and beautiful.”

His onsite workshop next to Raven’s Cry theatre sits on the site of what was once the location of St. Augustine’s Indian Residential school. “It’s so meaningful to me,” Tony says of his work on this project. “Because I’m a 10-year residential school survivor myself.” He is incorporating a lot of history into the design of the pole, as well as traditional and non-traditional elements. His maquette includes the school along with two kneeling figures in prayer who represent the

first two students to attend the school. Also included will be the double-headed eagle that represents the shíshálh Nation, frogs, wolves, bears, and hummingbirds. “The hummingbird, as told by my late father-in-law Gilbert Joe, represents healing,” says Tony. “The frog represents unity, bringing the community back together.”

Shíshálh Nation’s Cultural Crawl runs June 21-23 at various venues. Many events are free, some are by donation, and some require purchased tickets. Schedule information on page 10.
