Shíshálh carver Tony Paul shows off the maquette, or model, of the syiyaya “reconciliation pole” he will carve beside the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. The carving is part of the shíshálh “cultural crawl”. National Indigenous Peoples Day is Friday, June 21. The shíshálh have turned it into a three-day weekend festival and invited everyone, unlike most recent years when celebrations were limited to band members. The festival features tours, a sweatlodge, a bouncy castle, a moonlight paddle and more – and many of the events free. See story page 12. Schedule of events page 10. ANNA NOBILE PHOTO
