SCRD seeking watershed logging stop The Sunshine Coast Regional District says it will ask the company cutting down trees in the Chapman Creek watershed to stop its activity while negotiations are underway on the future of logging in the environmentally sensitive area.

SCRD Board Chair Garry Nohr gave that assurance to a group of about two dozen protestors who had packed the regional district’s board room during a meeting March 10 and pleaded for the Board to step in to bring a halt to logging by AJB Investments on its land in the watershed.

“Yes, I will ask them [to stop], I promise you I will ask that question,” Nohr replied to the request from protest spokesman Hans Penner, of Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF). “I’m not sure what the answer will be. But they might say yes.”

Nohr said that despite continuing efforts over several years, the SCRD and the shíshálh First Nation have been unable to convince the provincial government to give

local communities authority in their own watersheds to curtail logging that could potentially contaminate drinking water.

Still, Nohr hinted that there could be some progress in direct talks with the company.

“We are meeting with AJB. We are talking about land.

That’s as much as I can tell you, because it’s in camera,” Nohr said.

Penner had alleged in a statement to the Board that logging was occurring dangerously close to the intake for the southern Sunshine Coast water supply on Chapman Creek.

One concern is that logging can dislodge glacial clay in the soil. Once dissolved in water, the clay particles do not settle but stay suspended in solution for weeks at a time. The particles can chemically bond with bacteria and other contaminants, and are too fine for drinking-water processing systems to filter out.

Penner said that the only answer is for the SCRD to buy the AJB property.

“That is the final resolution here. Private land, like it or not, is going to have to be dealt with, and probably purchased,” said Penner.

Nohr said SCRD staff is constantly monitoring the logging and water supply situation, but that resolving the situation would take time.

He also thanked the protestors—some of whom have maintained a blockade on the logging road leading to the watershed since Feb. 12— “for your efforts.”

“We understand the frustration of constituents on the Coast when they protest and feel nobody is listening in the local government, but that’s not true,” Nohr said. “We’re on the same side. You may not think so, but we have to do everything exactly legally to make it work.”

Nohr added that SCRD representatives would be meeting in two weeks with officials from the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations for discussions on the situation.

A Gibsons woman is asking the B.C. Supreme Court to issue a restraining order in connection to part of the proposed George Hotel development.

Editorial Opinion Change in the air When Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in June 1914, no one thought, “Uh-oh, World War I is starting…” We only recognize the significance of events in the context of history. I recently had a day like any other except it made me wonder if we’re on the verge of historical change.

On March 2, I woke to CBC’s “Early Edition” and heard program host Rick Cluff interviewing Canada’s Minster of the Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna. She was explaining her infant government’s intention to meet the emissions targets set in Paris in December. That was followed by an interview with Canadian Labour Congress president Hassan Yussuff, talking about his organization embracing the need to address climate change with a proposal to create a million “climate jobs” over the next five years. It all struck me as amazing after a decade when little attention was paid to climate change at the federal level.

I hopped out of bed with excitement. Walking to the bus stop, I was hailed by my neighbour, the eminent architect Bing Thom, who invited me to squeeze into his Mini Minor.

As he let me off at the Fairmont Waterfront hotel, I wondered if I was still asleep and dreaming. I then noticed a number of identical bicycles at the hotel entrance. When I asked a manager whether they’re for rent, he replied, “They’re for our hotel customers on a first-come, first-served basis.” I asked whether they were used much. “All the time. People love them,” he answered. He then asked if I had seen the rooftop garden. “We have five beehives up there that produce 500 pounds of honey a year,” he boasted.

I was at the hotel to join Yussuff for a news conference about the CLC’s plan, called “One Million Climate Jobs: A Challenge for Canada.”

The reporters wanted to know what specific proposals we had to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I pointed out the important hurdle was to commit to reduce emissions, because until we start, we won’t know what opportunities will arise.

I reminded them that in 1961 when President John F. Kennedy said the U.S. would get American astronauts safely to the moon and back in a decade, no one knew how they were going to do it.

Amazingly, not only did they achieve the goal before the decade was over, there were hundreds of totally unanticipated spinoffs, including laptops, cellphones, GPS, ear thermometers and space blankets. I am absolutely certain the same will happen when we commit to avoiding chaotic climate change.

B.C. Hydro and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) plan to use glyphosate on the Sunshine Coast. However, because of its danger, countries around the world, such as France, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Colombia are banning glyphosate. Some large European supermarket chains refuse to sell it. The European Union and other countries are considering a ban.

Health Canada says that “products containing glyphosate do not present unacceptable risks to human health or the environment when used according to the proposed label directions”.

Acceptable risks are OK? What’s acceptable?

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have declared glyphosate a probable carcinogen. There is a high correlation between glyphosate and cancer, birth defects, neurological damage, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, miscarriages, a decrease in a male sex hormone, and more. An acceptable risk?

Bob Drinkwater of Drinkwater Environmental Services was quoted in The Coast Reporter as saying, “one approach is to restrict the use of herbicides to management of invasive plants only where mechanical or biological methods are not effective”. Therefore, please use mechanical or biological methods. One summer I saw men with chainsaws clearing vegetation on B.C. Hydro’s power line. Excellent.

The U.S. Geological Service found glyphosate in the air, rain, streams and surface water. Along with the detrimental impacts mentioned above, we have ample evidence to use the “Precautionary Principle”, which means that when there is such doubt and controversy about safety, err on the side of caution.

We strongly encourage B.C. Hydro and MOTI to use mechanical and biological methods rather than resorting to glyphosate.

LNG “farce”

Late this past January, Premier Christy Clark gave the First Nations at the Salmon Summit in Prince Rupert a lecture in scientific methodology because of their opposition to a massive LNG terminal at the mouth of the Skeena River. "I'm not sure what science the forces of no bring together up there except that it's not really about the science, it's not really about the fish. It's just about trying to say no. It's about fear of change. It's about a fear of the future.'' Of course there is no science, just melodramatic political theatre crafted for the ‘jobs vs environment’ pantomime show.

Meanwhile, Canada’s favourite real scientist David Suzuki, aka Dr. No, wants to know why, in a post COP 21 world, are we still spending billions on fossil fuel infrastructure when the smart money is running in the opposite direction to invest in renewables.

Incredible auction

First off, thank you for your coverage with photo of our extremely successful Syrian Family Art Auction.

However, how disappointing to actually read the copy to find it is incorrect and misleading.

It was a small team of volunteers, eight in all, who brought the art auction into a reality in an incredible onemonth time frame.

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery offered their space free but did not play any part in arranging it, as your article states. Both churches played a role but especially the Christian Life Assembly Church, where the art work

was collected and prepared for the auction.

The artists in our community gave instantly once they where informed as to what the auction was all about.

Many local businesses and individuals offered their assistance financially, in materials and their specialties.

Ed Hill the auctioneer was at his usual entertaining best, keeping the audience in laughter while at the same time getting the highest possible bids for each work.

The community was most generous in participating, not only during the Live Auction but also during the Silent Auction making it possible to reach the incredible figure of $17,775 within a two-day period.

I am forwarding this letter to correct your misleading article to acknowledge the Syrian Family Art Auction Committee in their most generous contribution of time and energy in making this event a reality.

Goldmoss Gallery rezoning �ight ends The two-year struggle to legitimize the Goldmoss Gallery in Roberts Creek has come to an end after the owners abandoned their attempt to win special rezoning for the project.

In 2010, owners Lee and Bon Roberts transformed part of their Lower Road home into a gallery, where they held a series of popular art shows. But the events prompted some neighbours to complain about noise, the number of cars parked in the area, and the presence of a quasi-commercial enterprise in an R-1 residential zone.

At a September, 2014 information hearing on the gallery, however, other neighbours and many other Roberts Creek residents were just as vocal in their support of the Goldmoss

project.

In May 2015, the Sunshine Coast Regional District Board granted second reading to a proposed zoning amendment bylaw that would have the Roberts’ property rezoned to a new category, Residential Art Gallery (RAG), and scheduled a formal public hearing on the matter.

But, “shortly after second reading, the applicants expressed dissatisfaction with the bylaw and requested that it not proceed to public hearing,” SCRD staff said in a report to the Board’s March 10 meeting.

“No further action on the bylaw application has been undertaken in the nine months since second reading,” the report said. Under SCRD planning and development procedures, a bylaw

can be cancelled if “inactive” for nine months.

The Board voted unanimously to approve the cancellation, ending the Goldmoss rezoning campaign.

But Roberts Creek SCRD Director Mark Lebbell said the door is still open for such projects.

“The provision for auxiliary art galleries remains within [the Roberts Creek] Official Community Plan, subject to site-specific rezoning,” Lebbell noted prior to the vote.

“It is a community that values art and home-based businesses and festivals. Should a different application come forward, I’m confident that it would be judged on its own merit and through the proper process in the community.”

Bylaw disputes Residents in all electoral areas of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) will now be able to take advantage of the benefits of the Bylaw Notice Enforcement System (BEN) for disputes related to minor bylaw infractions.

The adjudication system saves time and money and makes efficient use of court resources, as it eliminates the roles of court and court registries in the administration and hearing of these disputes. For individuals, the new system is simpler, less time consuming and less costly than the former bylaw ticketing system.

The BEN system was implemented on a small scale in July, 2011. In November, 2012 the system was introduced as a one year pilot project in Electoral Area B (Halfmoon Bay).

The Sunshine Coast Regional District is the purveyor of water for most of the Coast, but does not have control of the watersheds. Two other areas in the province, Vancouver and Victoria, do have such control. Vancouver got control of their watershed in the 1920s, but logging was not officially ended until 2002. In 2007, the Capital Regional District (Victoria) made an effort to control their watershed by purchasing a large tract of land at a cost of $65 million; an additional land purchase in 2010 cost over $18 million. At present, 330,000 users are paying for these purchases. If the SCRD were to purchase the private forest land in the Chapman Lake watershed, the two parcels would cost around $7 million.

SCRD does not maintain or own forest roads, as these are controlled by the provincial forest ministry. The private forest land owner in the Chapman watershed owns and operates its own roads. The SCRD does not have the right to block or gate these roads, but we do put up signs to make sure people are aware that they are in the watershed and should do whatever they can to protect the area. If we were legally able to gate the roads we would be blocking access to Gravity Bike Park and Dakota Ridge. To put up gates would also need to be

negotiated with First Nations and the province.

Constituents, First Nations, and the SCRD are frustrated at the inability to have local control over our watershed and both the First Nations and SCRD are seeking new ways to overcome the hurdles. The SCRD tried a few years back using the Health Act to try and stop logging in the watershed, using the precautionary principle, which failed in a court case, and the provincial government then changed the Health Act. Certain local groups have suggested that instead of water metering or going forward with the drought management plan in Chapman Lake that we use the funds to buy the private land in the watershed. All tax funds or grants to the SCRD are assigned to a particular service

and in this case, the water function, which means these funds are for water only. Grants must be used for the programs they were requested for and are required to be returned if they are not used for the purpose on the application.

The SCRD board is looking for a positive solution to the watershed issue. Later this month, the Chair and CAO will meet with the Minister of Forests and Lands to propose options presented by constituents. If this is not a positive meeting, the SCRD board will collaborate further with the community to devise a new plan.

As I sit at my desk and write, hammers are banging, the table-saw is going and the blues-rock is blaring in the Sunshine Coast Museum & Archives. And I couldn’t be more excited. We have embarked upon a massive renovation project to make our facility more accessible to all members of our community. The construction crew from Summerhill Fine Homes is here, and someone is yelling “we’re building history right now.” And he is right- this renovation project is a symbolic and literal opening up of our Museum space to everyone in our community. The main focus is to create a more accessible building for those with mo-

bility challenges by installing a lift to our second floor, creating a wheelchair accessible washroom, and opening up the entranceway into the Museum. But it is more than that. Among other destinations on the coast, our Museum provides a place where people can develop a deeper historical connection to their community. We are here to spark your imagination, give voice to your perspective, and pique your interest in the myriad of Sunshine Coast histories that can – and will – blow your mind. To do this, we need a space that is accessible to everyone and a building that can properly showcase how amazing our shared stories really are.

Of course, we couldn’t move forward without the generosity of the many people who have supported the project through financial donations and our Adopt an Artifact campaign. The SCRD

and Town of Gibsons also awarded grants to get the project off the ground, and substantial grants from the Sunshine Coast Community Forest’s Legacy Fund and the Federal Government’s Enabling Accessibility Fund sealed the deal. Now here we go!

From March 1- June 2016, the Museum will be closed to the public for the renovations. During this time, staff will still be working hard to assist in your research requests and anything else museum related. To help ease the stress of tax season the Library is offering free income tax assistance sessions for eligible individuals (modest income and a simple tax situation) on Fridays throughout March and April from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. This service is provided by the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program which is run in collaboration between community organizations like the Library and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Caravan of Creeps is coming to Roberts Creek March 25. The troupe of circus talent performers will include burlesque, exotic snakes, a sword swallower, contortionist, and a contact juggler, just to name a few of the more noteworthy acts coming to town. Ewan Johnstone of E.D.J. Events and Promotions in Gibsons is always on the lookout for shows that will interest the local community.

“Freak shows never fully disappeared,” says Johnstone, who is planning a night of circus performances, live music and a DJ to dance out the night.

Gwendolyn Gorham, the Coast’s own Spinning Dancer, is just one of the local acts who will be opening for the Caravan. Gorham is a hoop dancer who won the Curvy Hooper Challenge last year, giving her the opportunity to attend the Hottie Hoop Camp retreat where she refined some of her skills. “It

got me connected with my body more than I’d ever been before,” says Gorham. “It’s a really expressive art form.”

Other local acts include “staff spinner” Pan Wilson, belly dancer Amber Webster, and “poi spinner” Pyromantis (Ian Cliff). “People are into things that wow them and are new and different,” says Gorham on the appeal of the circus. “It’s beautiful and enchanting and intriguing.”

One of the Vancouverbased Caravan of Creeps’ top attractions is Burns The Dragon. The multi-talented Burns walks on glass barefoot, hangs from chains by hooks attached to his skin, contact juggles with live flame, and, of course, breathes fire. “I would say about 50 per cent of my act involves some aspect of pain,” says Burns. “I do feel pain just like everyone else does, but I handle it very well. I don't shut it off. I just accept it and move on.” He is largely self-taught, getting his start as a contact juggler and building up his skills from there. He spends many hours rehearsing, given the element of danger present in many of his routines, but the payoff is the looks of “awe and won-

der” he receives from young and old alike. “People want to see what they haven't before,” says Burns. “We show them that and things they didn't even know they wanted to see.”

Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape.

Overcoming that intimidation factor can be as simple as working out with a friend or working with a personal trainer, each of whom can offer the support and guidance beginners need when re-acclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. In addition to the buddy system, beginners can employ the following strategies to make their return to exercise go as smoothly as possible.

• Gradually build up your exercise tolerance. When you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body.

Those positive feelings can be addictive, but it's important that beginners do not go too hard too quickly when beginning a new exercise regimen.

Gradually build up your exercise tolerance, exercising two or three days per week and taking a day off between workouts when you start. As your body becomes more acclimated to exercise, you can start to workout more and with more intensity.

• Stretch after working out.

Stretching can improve flexibility, and that may decrease your risk of future injury. In addition, improved flexibility may improve your exercise performance by improving your range of motion and helping your muscles work more effectively. Muscles contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those muscles to their natural position. Include both static stretching and foam rolling in your post-workout stretching routine.

• Find a routine that works for you. Many men and women feel they must sign up for a gym membership
