Girls followed?

now playing

On the evening of March 20, Sunshine Coast RCMP received two separate reports of suspicious circumstances involving teenage girls. In the first instance, a 14-year-old girl reported that around 8:30 pm she had been walking through Cascade Park in the Emerson Road area of West Sechelt when someone began running towards her. The girl believed she was being chased and ran out of the park. She did not see the other person in the park, and immediately returned home. In the second instance, a 15-year-old girl was walking through downtown Sechelt shortly after 9 pm when she

3

felt she was being watched by a white male in a green Jeep. The girl saw the same Jeep parked in different locations as she walked, but she was never approached by it, and was never spoken to. The girl was able to call a family member to pick her up. After hearing about these incidents on social media, a witness reported that a green Jeep had been seen near Cascade Park earlier in the evening, although it is unknown whether it was the same Jeep reported in the second incident. Any suspicious persons or vehicles should be reported to police immediately. Submitted by RCMP 14A 107min

Shortly after 8 pm March 21, Sunshine Coast emergency services responded to a tragic collision that claimed the life of an 86 year-old woman. It is believed that the woman had just gotten off a bus and was crossing the Sunshine Coast Hwy near Oceanview Drive just west of Gibsons, when she was struck by a car on the highway. Numerous people including two doctors stopped to help, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Submitted by RCMP

Editorial Opinion Foiling the fraudsters Fraud is a major threat to the Canadian small business community, hitting victimized small businesses an average of $6,200 in financial costs in the past year, according to a ground-breaking new Canadian Federation of independent Business (CFIB) report. One third of small businesses have experienced one or more fraud attempts in the last 12 months, and one in five have fallen victim. Only eight per cent of defrauded businesses recovered their full financial costs. March is Fraud Prevention Month and CFIB is focused on helping businesses help themselves through education and access to resources. “Fraud is a serious concern that can disrupt regular operations. Victimized small businesses have little chance of recovering their losses, so it’s critical that employers understand how to protect themselves,” said Plamen Petkov, CFIB vicepresident for Business Resources. “While the money is significant, business owners have told us that the non-financial costs have an even greater impact on their business.” Lost time (84 per cent), negative emotional impacts such as stress (61 per cent) and negative impact on staff morale (29 per cent) were cited as the top non-financial impacts of fraud. The most common type of fraud causing a loss for small businesses is fraudulent payments. The most common attempted frauds are email scams and phishing, followed by directory fraud, malicious software and phone scams. Businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors are more likely to experience financial losses from fraud, while businesses in the wholesale sector are most likely to experience fraud attempts. Small businesses spent an average of $2,900 on fraud prevention in the past year; however, only three in 10 small businesses train their employees to identify fraud. “The threat of fraud is not going away,” added Petkov. “When it comes to preventing fraud, awareness and vigilance are key. Most small businesses take some preventative measures; they can do even more by training employees to spot signs of fraud.” Take the pressure off decision-making; make it a company policy to not agree to any purchases or business deals over the phone. Designate one person to be responsible for making all company purchases. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t be afraid to end the phone call with that pushy salesperson or delete the email asking for personal information. Legitimate organizations won’t pressure you to make hasty decisions or ask you for personal details in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable or rushed. Letters to the Editor – Opinions Stop water meters This letter is to raise awareness of the SCRD’s plan to implement stage 5 indoor and outdoor water restrictions (more severe than stage 4 outdoor water restrictions) for 365 days of the year and for future decades. Smart water meters are expensive and short-sighted. They will not address drought or more subdivision development and will not increase water supply during dry periods. The five to seven million dollars required for smart water meters should be instead used to protect the Chapman watershed which us under threat from logging. Smart water meters will not upgrade the water mains and will not renew the old infrastructure or increase capacity. SCRD is the supplier of water and is trying to restrict its use by using water pricing to control consumption behaviour of its customers. This initiative should be stopped immediately. Proper communication and information has been lacking and the SCRD is trying to slip this through. J.E. Hudder & F. Mostrovich, Langdale

Planting the shore We had an amazing occurrence over the past two months in Roberts Creek at the Roberts Creek Provincial Park Picnic Site, and at the shoreline rip rap wall between Inlet and Trail avenues on the waterfront at Trail Bay in Sechelt. With an outpouring of time, effort, and a spirit of

Go Green! Recycle this newspaper

giving back, students participated in two near-shore restoration projects. With funding assistance from the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program and Pacific Salmon Foundation, a huge effort was made to help restore the near-shore part of the little picnic site in Roberts Creek to a more natural state, and to add biodiversity to the rip rap wall at Trail Bay. With assistance from volunteer parents, Sunshine Coast Friends of Forage Fish volunteers and Sechelt and Gibsons Garden Club volunteers, students and teachers from Roberts Creek Elementary arrived en force to remove non-native blackberry and ivy plants on the first visit, then returned to assist with planting native Nootka rose, beach willow, sword fern, salal, and beach dune grass in the park. This project involved almost the whole school. During the same time period, with the assistance from the Sechelt Garden Club and the District of Sechelt, several groups of dedicated students and staff from the Nature School at Davis Bay Elementary and Kinnikinnick Elementary descended upon the rip rap wall at the Trail Bay shoreline between Inlet and Trail Avenues to diversify the habitat with plantings of Nootka rose and dune grass. A huge thank you to all who assisted through mud and blustery weather, and especially to all the students who made this possible. Not to be forgotten are all the local businesses that donated and provided discounts. We will now have to watch and wait to see how our plants fare. Dianne Sanford, Seachange Marine Conservation Society, Sunshine Coast Friends of Forage Fish.

Boycott Israel Our representative in Ottawa voted for the Conservatives’ anti-BDS (BoycottDivest-Sanction) motion in the Commons on February 22. The motion asks the government "to condemn any and all attempts by Canadian organizations, groups or individuals to promote the BDS movement”. Arguments used to support the motion indicate a lack of awareness on the part of our rookie MP. BDS is a non-violent, effective means of pressuring Israel into respecting Palestinian human rights as called for by resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly. It is overwhelmingly supported by Palestinian society, Canadian church groups, university students and Jewish Voice for Peace. The BDS movement against South African apartheid helped abolish that racist institution thanks to the support of people all over the world. As a teenager, I travelled to the Middle East and later became more aware of the oppression of Palestinians by Israel. I was glad to support the world BDS movement that rose to end it and was elated to find myself in the good company of Desmond Tutu, the late Nelson Mandela and our own Naomi Klein. Here is what Klein wrote in the Guardian a few years ago: "The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa. In July 2005 a huge coalition of Palestinian groups laid out plans to do just that. They called on ‘people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era’. The campaign Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions was born.”

http://www.naomiklein. org/articles/2009/01/israel-boycott-divest-sanction I hope that our MP will read Naomi’s article to learn more about this issue and support BDS in the future. Roger Lagassé, Halfmoon Bay

Big thank you After the Oscars Eve Party on February 27 at Trail Ball Mall, the Rotary Club of Sechelt published an ad thanking sponsors and supporters of the event. Inadvertently, we failed to include two important supporters in the ad: Errol Lipschitz (aka Lippy the Clown, Facebook.com/errol. aol) who circulated through the crowd performing impromptu magic tricks; and Ingeborg Hardman (isphotography.com) who contributed numerous ideas for the event, created posters and advertising material, sparked up the Oscars Eve Facebook page and took many photographs of event participants during the evening. So, Errol and Ingeborg, please accept a great big thank you from Rotary. Tom Pinfold, Director, Rotary Club of Sechelt

LNG plant gets environmental nod The federal environment minister has given a green light to the widely opposed Woodfibre liquid natural gas project in Howe Sound. “I have determined that the Designated Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects,” Minister Catherine McKenna said in a news release March 18. McKenna added, however, that the LNG project also “may require” authorization from Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans and the Ministry of Transport. The Woodfibre facility, seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, is owned by Singa-

pore-based Pacific Oil and Gas Ltd. The plant is expected to operate for approximately 25 years and to produce between 1.5 and 2.1 million tonnes of LNG annually. An estimated 40 freighters per year would each transport as much 60,000 tonnes of the liquefied gas down Howe Sound and across the Pacific Ocean to feed gas-fired hydroelectric plants also owned by Pacific Oil and Gas. A B.C. government environmental review approved the project in October, 2015. Almost all of the residents speaking at a series of community meetings conducted

by Liberal MP Pam GoldsmithJones in February in West Vancouver, Squamish and Gibsons were opposed to Woodfibre. However, Goldsmith-Jones told the Gibsons meeting that about half the written submissions to the government were in favour of approving the project. In its own submission, the District of Squamish Council said it did not support the project, while the Council of the Squamish First Nation does support it, although it acknowledged that the band membership was divided on the issue. Halkett Bay sponge reef Environment Minister Mary Polak has introduced legislation that, if passed, will add foreshore to a park on Gambier Island, along with other park expansions. At Halkett Bay Marine Park, a proposed 136-hectare marine foreshore addition protects a recently discovered, rare glass sponge reef southeast of Gambier Island. The glass sponge reef is especially unique in that it is located in only 30 metres of water, making the park one of the few locations in the world where these reefs are accessible to both scientists and scuba divers. Madeira Park’s Harbour Publishing was recognized once again for its excellent work with four BC Book Prize nominations last week. Orca Chief, by Robert Budd and Roy Henry Vickers, is a finalist for both the Bill Duthie Award and the Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize.

ARTS & CULTURE

Orca Chief is the third book of First Nations legends Budd and Vickers have collaborated on, with the first two, Raven Brings The Light (2014) and Cloudwalker (2015), also being finalists for the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Awards. Budd’s background is in archival preservation, and he earned a Masters in history, with a particular focus on oral history, from the University of Victoria. Vickers and Budd crossed paths when Vickers was trying to track down journalist Imbert Orchard’s collections of the

recorded stories of early BC pioneers taped in the 1950s and 1960s. Budd just happened to be working on the preservation of those audio recordings. Soon they were working together on Vickers’ memoirs when Budd realized there were a lot of other stories they could be telling, and the children’s book series was born. “It’s amazing,” says Budd of working with Vickers. “We’re very cognizant that we couldn’t do what we do without the other.” Their process consists of Vickers telling the

story, Budd preparing them for publication, and the two of them going back and forth until they’re both happy with the text. Vickers does the illustrations. While aware that the books allow them to reach more people, they are both committed to the oral preservation of the story, so recordings of Vickers tales are on Budd’s website, memoriestomemoirs.ca. “Oral history is always adapting and always changing,” points out Budd. “How it was told 300 years ago is not how it’s told today nor how it will be told

tomorrow. We don’t see the book as the end product but as link in the chain.”

Local hockey patriarch honoured They call Tom Gory “the patriarch of old timer hockey” on the Sunshine Coast, and what better way to honour his decades of devotion to local hockey than to hold an annual game where the winning team gets a trophy named after him. The over-60s Rusty Cranks Senior Hockey Club split into “north Coast” and “south Coast” squads to play for the Tom Gory Cup March 21 at Sechelt Arena. And Tom, now 90, was there himself to ceremonially drop the puck at centre. For the record, it was a 6-6 tie, which means the “south” retains the cup it won last year.

Seniors’ projects

Two proposed residential developments for seniors that would create nearly 300 apartment suites near downtown Sechelt will be the subject of public hearings over the next few weeks. Sechelt Council gave first reading March 16 to an application for an Official Community Plan amendment and rezoning for a 100- to 110-suite rental complex in the Trail Bay Estates area on the elevated Clayton Family Lands west of Chatelech Secondary School. A public hearing on the OCP and zoning changes is tentatively scheduled for April 12. The changes would permit land currently zoned as park and rural to become residential, and would create a park zone in a nearby area in exchange for an equivalent area of parkland that would be taken up by the development. The rental complex, to be called Wesbrooke by the Sea, has been proposed by Casa Living, the same company behind The Wesbrooke Seniors Living Community in Pitt Meadows. The Sechelt project would offer studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and accommodate 120 to 130 seniors in a building no higher than four storeys. Some units would come with an assisted-living level of care, others would be classified as “supportive living” for seniors still living independently. The other Sechelt project, which would be situated east of Chatelech Secondary, is Rockwood Ocean Stories, proposed by Spani Developments. That complex envisions 125 rental units and 60 freehold condominium suites, also as a mix of seniors’ independent supportive living units and units designed for assisted living. One public hearing on the project was held March 3. A second hearing has been called for March 29 to consult with the public regarding “additional new information provided by the developer.” The District also said it wants to ensure the project is in line with its Waste Management Plans and Financial Plan. “I don’t figure I earned that trophy to be named after me, but they figure I do,” Gory said. “Being as I was the oldest one who was playing, I guess I inherited it.” Gory was born and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, a part of the country where a thousand ponds freeze up for months at a time every year. But he didn’t have a chance to pick up the game until his late 40s—in 1972, when the arena in Sechelt was built. And he didn’t stop playing until he was 89. “A year ago last January, I had to quit,” Tom said. Tom’s son, Daniel Gory, who, at a mere 66, plays goal

for the Rusty Cranks himself, said it was his father’s aging feet that finally forced him to quit playing. Tom recalled, though, that it wasn’t just the ankles that were getting wobbly. “It was everything. My balance was going, too.” Tom, who has been everything from a bus driver to a shoemaker in his working life on the Coast since 1942, still lives independently in Sechelt with wife, Mary. He still goes to Rusty Cranks games as a fan. Does he miss playing? “A wee bit,” Tom said. Rik Jespersen

Weekend Workshop

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction

M B S R

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Education Matters Betty Baxter

Chair, School District #46 School Board

with Dr. Eddie Berinstein

April 8th-10th, 2016

MBSR was started by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the late 1970’s .

The cultivation of Mindfulness through Meditation Practice allows us to be more present for our moments as they unfold and to embrace the “full catastrophe” of our life in a more harmonious and balanced way. The primary purpose of the workshop is the cultivation of mindfulness in everyday life, thereby using it as a tool to help deal with Chronic Pain, Stress, and Illness.

Dr. Eddie Berinstein has been practicing

Mindfulness and Insight Meditation since 1977. Eddie now teaches MBSR Workshops on the Sunshine Coast, and is an Instructor with the Center for Mindfulness. He has found that the cultivation of Mindfulness has enhanced all aspects of his physical, emotional and spiritual life, as well as his professional life as a Family Physician.

School trustees and senior staff from SD46 had the wonderful opportunity to take part in a “Taste of Mindfulness” with instructors Dr. Rahul Guptka and Ron Skene on March 4 at the restful setting of the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. This session helped our district leaders understand the research and experience the skills being taught to students, staff and families in our communities. Dr. Guptka explained how the research is expanding rapidly and conclusively confirms the benefits of these techniques for stress reduction, physical health and even the positive influence of regular practice on chronic

Grand Artesia The grand piano will be coming out for the Artesia monthly coffee house being held Friday, March 26 at the Arts Centre, Sechelt, 8pm To start the evening will be young pianist and now also a vocalist Nadia Behji followed by Keiran Semple, a songwriter, instrumentalist and singer. The monthly poet for the evening will be

disease. With only a short day of instruction, we felt the benefits of greater awareness. Participants could let go of stress and experience some conscious reduction of mental business and anxiety. It may take many years to master and incorporate into daily life but we were grateful for the taste of mindfulness practice. The Roberts Creek Community School has been coordinating mindfulness instruction in our district for several years. Instructor Ron Skene has worked with grade 8s at Chatelech Secondary for several years and for the past two years, all grade 7s at Roberts Creek Elementary have learned these skills. The Roberts Creek Community School received a three-year grant from Health Canada 2013, enabling the program to expand to include training for teachers and counsellors Jan Jensen. Following the break singer/songwriter Katrina Bishop from Pender Harbour performs on piano and to close the evening jazz vocalist Jacquie Allan will be joined by Ken Dalgleish, piano and Barry Taylor, drums. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $10. More info from www.suncoastarts.com. Submitted

and a stream for families to take part together. As this project concludes this year, we are hopeful that the benefits can be expanded in our community and to other school districts around the province. Each year, our student trustees have stressed how mental health is their top priority. We are very happy more students are learning mindfulness techniques and hope to see the use of mindfulness in our schools expand in the future. Thank you to Roberts Creek Community School and all instructors for bringing this instruction to our communities.

Nice ditch On March 20, a witness reported a single vehicle incident in the 500 block of Pratt Road, Gibsons, after a slow-moving vehicle entered a ditch. The driver continued driving in the ditch until coming to a culvert. The driver, who was not impaired, advised she had not noticed the ditch and had swerved to avoid hitting crows gathered on the roadway. The vehicle, which sustained damage to the undercarriage, was towed and the matter has been referred to ICBC. Submitted by RCMP

Horoscope Michael O’Connor Astrologer

Tip of the Week: In my Horoscope for the Year 2016, I wrote that this year would be a pivotal year. Specifically, it is a year of endings, completion and graduation on relationship fronts. Some people will experience this much more and some less on a personal level. Yet, everyone collectively is now and will continue to notice, feel and literally experience these changes. By the end of 2016, it will be very evident that we have undergone a definite shift and at a global level at higher levels of magnitude than we have experienced in about a decade. In the most basic sense, we are experiencing the overall pace of things shifting into a higher gear and accelerating. This includes people moving and changing locations the world over. Positively, this is serving to make people more sober and alert to larger social, collective and global issues. This includes healing ourselves and the world in general. True healing always begins at a personal level. Side B of this theme is living with purpose and authentic self-actualization. With the help of Astrology, I can assist you to gain deep insight and clarity about who you are, why you are here, what constitutes your challenges and wounds and what are your strengths

and orientations of destiny. Aries (Mar 21–Apr 20) Spring is in the air and you feel catapulted into action. In some respects, this has been true for the past several weeks with mars in Sagittarius. Yet, there has also been a pull inward or, at least, the yearning for a bit of downtime. It may prove wise to make time to yield to this urge for sleep and sanctuary to deeply recharge your energy cells if you can make the time. Otherwise, the lights are all green. Taurus (Apr 20–May 21) A time of looking within is upon you. It combines with an already active process of looking within, confronting possible fears, blocks or limiting beliefs. This is a means of inner strengthening. You are steadily activating a new foundation of power. You may still feel a little wobbly and so it is important that you persevere. An ambitious drive is supporting your cause. Gemini (May 21–Jun 21) Your individuality is shining through an otherwise dramatic sky. Like majestic rays produced by the interplay of light obscured by billowing cumulonimbus cloud cover, one is left to wonder if angels are descending. Yet circumstances may not be so marvelous or mythic. Rather, you are pushed to be grounded and to give where is counts, and how. Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22) A dynamic momentum has begun. At best, it is inspired by lofty visions of possibility. One way or another you are meant to bring it down to earth, to the ground floor

of reality. You have work to do and on a variety of fronts. Fortunately, you are in a commanding mood. This will support you to get the job done. Go easy on your comrades as you march into action. Leo (Jul 22–Aug 23) Your passions are running high. Beneath them, there may be a good deal of emotional turbulence, however. Such is the recipe for complexity, the key ingredient for genius. You may feel the need to reinvent yourself or, at least, improve your performance. Fortunately, you are in a sporting and adventurous mood supporting you to meet the challenge. Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) Much is shifting and shaking in your world, especially on relationship fronts. Something new is brewing. Call it a new beginning. Of course, that comes with some endings as well. The death and rebirth theme is operative. It is probably nothing more than a completion of one phase and the beginning of another. Say hello to your new world and friends. Libra (Sep 22–Oct 22) As with your Virgo neighbor, you too are in the throes of new relationship prospects. Health themes remain strong. This does not mean there is anything wrong, but it does suggest you could be susceptible. Use this as an invitation to get healthier and boost your immune system. A checkup might also be worth your time. Otherwise, some big and special is on the horizon. Scorpio (Oct 22–Nov 21) Adjusting to the currents

and hefty tide rolling in continues. Circumstances are challenging you to work it. Fortunately, your spirit is willing. Yet, you may have to acquire new knowledge and skills. All efforts to increase your confidence and sense of security to support you to meet this challenge will prove worthwhile. Begin by affirming your resolve. Sagittarius (Nov 21–Dec 21) The next phase of turning your dreams into reality has begun. It is good and fine that you are dreaming. But unless you take action, they will remain just that. You do have a destiny and free will is a core feature of it. Your best approach now is to weave a playful, sporting attitude with a good measure of patience. Avoid ‘if and when’ and proceed with ‘as long as it takes’. Capricorn (Dec 21–Jan 19) Slowly but surely old relationship involvements and commitments are dissolving. On the other hand, it may simply be your habitual attitude and approach that is melting away. If the former is occurring and you are concerned, direct your attention to that latter. This is a call to

step back and see the bigger picture. Are you going to get to where you want to go if you continue as you are? Aquarius (Jan 19–Feb 19) You are beginning to see the world as with new eyes. This process actually began several years ago. Yet, along the way, there have been key junctures and you have now arrived at another. Change is in the air and there are reasons to say that it includes rewards for past efforts. Your basic challenge is to exercise

faith in what is unfolding and to cooperate, fully. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) The pioneering spirit continues to guide your visions. With each new day, you feel inspired to explore new territory. Your ambitions are rising steadily, especially at the prospect of increasing your overall network of associations. If your career is in need of a boost, a new location may be the answer and the same is true of your social life. Go for it!
