Ferry service between Langdale and Horseshoe Bay was suspended for most of the day March 26 when the Queen of Surrey crashed while docking about 8:10am. BC Ferries called it “a docking incident”. On the first run of the day from Horseshoe Bay, the ferry collided with the pontoon beside the dock and got stuck on a “fender” of the pontoon. More than 200 passengers were stuck on board for much of the day, while a tug and hovercraft arrived to help the ferry. Service was scheduled to resume in the evening, with the Queen of Cowichan set to make two return trips. But the schedule for the following days was uncertain as the Local went to press. Can Seawatch houses be moved?

Preliminary discussions about moving houses out of the evacuated Seawatch subdivision have been held. It is unknown whether moving of the homes is physically possible or financially prudent.

District of Sechelt Mayor Darnelda Siegers released details on these talks in response to Seawatch home owner Gerry Latham’s inquiry following the March 20 council meeting. Latham asked why the District was looking into having the houses moved when the Seawatch home owners are not interested in paying to have this work done. News of these District’s discussion was sent to Latham and other area homeowners in a March 19 email from the mayor’s office. The information took Ms. Latham and others by surprise.

Ms. Latham indicated that owners of houses in the subdivision had made inquiries about having these homes moved. They were advised costs would start at $100,000. That figure does not include the cost of preparing the house for moving.

They were also told only half of each structure can be moved and that neither decks nor garages could be transported. For house movers to access the homes, there would also be costs to repair Gale Avenue South, which has been temporarily closed, due to the impacts of area ground instability.

Siegers said contact was made with Lower Mainland based company Nickel Brothers House Movers. Before it became aware that Gale Avenue had been compromised, the company had indicated that all of the houses could be moved. The District has since provided it with the geotechnical reports on the area. The

company is assessing this information and WorkSafe BC requirements regarding safety measures needed for its staff to enter the area to assess and move structures.

Sechelt has been looking into bridging over the compromised area of Gale Avenue. “We are finding that it is going to take some time to get that into place and it will be very costly,” said Siegers.

She further explained that the District has not identified an area where the structures could be moved to. “Until we know whether the houses can be moved, there is no need to find a place to put them,” said Siegers.

stated he would prefer that the District focus its efforts on closing the subdivision, expropriating the land and negotiating fair compensation for the homeowners. If moving of the houses is possible, he asked whether it would be the District or the home owners taking responsibility for arranging and paying for this work.

“We don’t know who would be moving the houses at this point or where the money would come from,” said Siegers. She noted that discussions are ongoing with other levels of government on options to address the site and finding resources to pay the costs. Connie Jordison

Bees in the city If there’s one thing bees and many city dwellers have in common, it’s a love of gardens. That’s good news for both because it means there’s hope for reversing the decline of bee populations worldwide. Cities are important refuges for these critical pollinators and could ultimately hold the key to their survival.

Canada is home to more than 800 bee species, from big, fuzzy carpenter bees to tiny, green metallic sweat bees. Climate change, pesticide use, habitat loss and disease have contributed to an alarming drop in wild and managed pollinators. This is at a time when 35 per cent of the world’s crop production depends on pollination, for an annual market value of up to US$577 billion. Bees and other pollinating insects are the basis of healthy diets, but they also play a significant role in our overall quality of life. We can thank them for some of our medicines, clothing and construction materials, as well as recreational and cultural activities.

That’s where cities come in. Urbanization has come at a cost to insects like bees. Our rapid shift away from rural life has disturbed their habitat and made it harder for them to find food they need to survive. And when bees decline, so do the plants that depend on them for reproduction.

However, new research debunks the myth that urban areas are inherently bad for biodiversity, especially when it comes to pollinators. In a large-scale study of 360 sites over two years – published in “Nature Ecology and Evolution” – U.K. researchers found that urban land can support robust pollinator populations when done deliberately and correctly. That means putting pollinator conservation at the heart of urban planning.

As it turns out, home and community gardens are among bees’ favourite places to hang out. That’s because of the wide range of fruit and vegetable flowers they offer. The study found these urban gardens often attract up to 10 times more bees than the places we might typically consider bee havens: nature reserves, parks, cemeteries and other public green spaces. Bees are unable to thrive where there are trees and turf alone.

Maintaining gardens gets more people outdoors, exercising and interacting with one another, reducing isolation, strengthening social bonds and reinforcing their connection to nature.

Bees and other pollinators can recover if we take deliberate action.

Urbanization has had a hand in the decline of bees, butterflies and other essential bugs. It’s time for cities, and citizens, to become forces for good. Through small, simple acts to better manage our yards and green spaces, we can help sustain the pollinators that sustain us.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Cavalcade cancelled This is a sad notice from the Sunshine Coast Sea Cavalcade Society (SCSCS) Board: There will be NO Sea Cavalcade Festival in 2019.

We no longer have the skilled, dedicated volunteers coming on board to learn and complete the many, many tasks that have been needed to stage past sea cavalcades.

Our liabilities cannot be covered and our activities cannot be managed without essential people to assume the necessary roles that the festival requires.

Perhaps the festival will renew in the future, but our turn has ended. We have stretched our efforts in the last few years to the best of our abilities but we alone cannot continue to do this.

We were ready to train a new team, but no one volunteered. We hope that future years will bring a new group of dedicated skilled volunteers together who will bring their ideas and skills to create more Sea Cavalcade Festivals.

For those who have helped and supported us in the past, we wish to thank you. We would like to especially thank the Town of Gibsons, and also the SCRD, the B.C. Gaming Grants Commission, the many sponsors, volunteers and activity leaders of past years and you, our community, for your support and participation through the last 50 years. Your part helped create a wonderful time for Coast families in past summers.

Be the change

(Re “Students rally on a Friday for the future”, the Local, March 21) The children have spoken. Now can we start to talk about what we can do to lower our carbon footprint.

Every little bit counts. We could fly less or we could eat less meat and dairy or we could use less plastic.

We don’t have to be perfect but we could start by doing something and talking to each other about our concerns and resolutions.

Grotesque insult

(Re Weekly Cartoon, WW2 and the war on opioids, March 14) Your editorial cartoon is a grotesque insult to the men and women who lost their lives serving the country in the two world wars. Those people were on the front lines of horror we can’t even imagine, and gave their lives for our freedom.

Your cartoon compares this to drug users who overdose and die from their own self-indulgence. Sad, that they do this, but, my god, there is no parallel here to those who fought for their country and died.

Unique leadership

(Re “Seawatch emergency first of its kind in Canada”, the Local, March 21) Your article quotes Mayor Siegers as saying that such a situation has never arisen anywhere in Canada before. That’s right – what, in fact, is unprecedented is the reaction of the Mayor and Council to the problem.

Ordering folks out of their homes and ensuring compliance with fencing, police,

dogs, and drones…that is unique; unique leadership; unique compassion. (I understand this was based on the recommendation of a single engineering firm – the same firm that had their $10M fix rebuffed.) Their actions are fascist-like and a dereliction of their responsibilities. Placing covenants on properties to protect yourself is no way to conduct District business.

If there is a problem with a development then don’t approve it – why have all those expensive employees? I encountered this same mind-set with Sechelt on the small Whitaker Rd. development last fall. Once they issue the building permit they brush their hands – job well done – the myriad of problems they may be creating are someone else’s problems. Each time I talked to their engineering people I was directed to a different person – they were all quick with an answer but it was never the final answer. I never received a reply to the two letters that I wrote. These are indicators of a disorganized and incompetent administration.

People like this no doubt run for cover on something like Seawatch.

The way forward on this matter is with the roads.

When roads within a new development are gazetted to the District, they belong to the District, and should be maintained by the District. The millions they plan to spend this year straightening an old curve (ironically on the road to Seawatch) should be redirected to maintaining the Seawatch roads.

Filling collapsed ground with broken rock is likely a fix for that particular location and may turn out to be the best long-term approach to dealing with any

future failures. With roads working the utilities people will no doubt follow suit and ensure delivery of their services. Private homeowners should be free to make their own decision on the safety of their individual properties. Short of a crumbling foundation and tilting home, the Mayor and Council should keep their stubby fat fingers off of private property.

A desperate problem

A young lady wrote, last week, that she wishes to come home to the Coast.

She also encouraged growth in the area.

Although I agree in principle, we have a desperate problem to face before any growth can happen. Water supplies. More of.

I propose that the public be informed on a “weekly” basis, through the newspapers at least, of progress being made on the steps to achieve this. For instance, 55 new homes on Havies Road cannot be accommodated at our present water supply rate. What is being done? We deserve to know.

Cowrie con�irmed for Coasters Car Club With use of Cowrie Street and Hackett Park for its annual August car show authorized for three more years, the Coasters Car Club is now planning for this year’s show – and the event’s 25th anniversary in 2020. The club’s request for a use agreement valid to 2021 received approval at the March 20 Sechelt council meeting.

No changes were made in extending the agreement, which has been in place since 2013. It allows for closure of Cowrie Street to vehicle traffic from Ocean Avenue to Wharf Avenue from early morning until mid-afternoon on the Saturday following the BC Day long weekend.

According to Mike Shanks, the club’s event coordinator, it is status quo for the 2019 event. The Club anticipates between 450 and 500 classic, collector and show cars to be registered for the Sleepy Hollow Rod Run on Friday, Aug. 16. Shanks not-

ed that about 430 vehicles are usually part of the next day’s car show. Participants can register for the 2019 event at coasterscarclub. com.

Council members raised concerns about the impact of the event’s road closure on downtown traffic flows and emergency vehicle travel. During the 2017 event, a fire truck was delayed in responding to a call, in a rare case of downtown Sechelt “traffic gridlock”, created by the road closure combined with event and weekend traffic volumes. The call, fortunately, was not a serious fire.

To address this issue, Councillor Matt McLean suggested amending the agreement to have the Cowrie Street intersection with Trail Avenue remain open during the event. This change was not supported. Other Council members felt that having vehicles operating along Trail, in the middle of this

pedestrian oriented event, would pose a safety risk.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 attendees walk in the area to view the car show.

Shanks says the club is willing to discuss options to improve traffic flows as it develops the event traffic management plan. He believes it could be possible to keep Trail Avenue open, with pedestrian crossing guards at the Cowrie intersection to help ensure public safety. He noted that the Club uses both professional and volunteer traffic control persons in conjunction with the event. “The suggestion is a good one. Having one downtown side route open to vehicles would alleviate the pressure on through traffic and provide an option for those driving to and from the downtown during the event,” said Shanks.

“The agreement extension is excellent news,” said Shanks.

Highway petition goes legislature Local residents were planning to be on hand March 27 in the BC Legislature as local MLA Nicholas Simons presented a petition with over 6,000 signatures calling for major improvements to Highway 101. The petition urges the provincial government to consider a highway bypass route and other upgrades to help resolve vehicle transportation issues facing the Lower Sunshine Coast.

Members of the Sunshine Coast 101 Committee who organized the petition were travelling to the provincial capital for the presentation.

SCRD Chairperson Lori Pratt, who was scheduled to be in Victoria on business that day, also planned to be there.

The petition was to be presented during the afternoon Question Period.

Simons also arranged for a meeting between committee

representatives and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Claire Trevena.

Committee representative Robin Merriott is hopeful that the Minister will take the petition’s message seriously.

His view is that the volume of petition signatures, along with support from Sechelt council, the SCRD Board, the local Chamber of Commerce and from Mark Collins, president and chief executive officer of BC Ferries Corporation, make a compelling call for improvements to Highway 101.

“We contend that our area doesn’t really have a highway,” said Merriott. “What we have is a two-lane road serving as our main transportation route. In its current state, Highway 101 is simply inadequate for the volume of residential, commercial and visitor traffic that make use

of it. The only vehicle crossing over Chapman Creek is a narrow bridge, built over 60 years ago. With no alternate routes available if the highway gets blocked, there are no options for travellers to access the area hospital or either ferry terminal.”

The committee, which formed out of the Davis Bay Parkway Society, is calling for the creation of a state- of-theart highway to carry traffic efficiently from Langdale to Sechelt. It wants the province to commit to upgrades that will make Highway 101 a safe route for vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and transit services. The group is also advocating for the highway to bypass sections of the current route to avoid the popular Davis Bay Seawall area and areas that have intensive residential development.

The subject of equity is increasing in the discourse about education. The concept of equity in education has two main components: access to education and the right to educational outcomes. Access speaks to the right in accessing and participating in education regardless of personal or social circumstances such as cognitive, emotional, or physical ability, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or socio-economic status. The right to educational outcome speaks to the

right in acquiring academic skills, particularly related to literacy and numeracy.

Inclusion is at the forefront of the debate on equity. Last month, at our District Professional Development Day, SD46 hosted Shelley Moore, an expert on inclusion in education. We had an opportunity to learn about the evolution of inclusion and discuss meeting the needs of students who need to access and acquire education in different ways based on their cognitive, emotional and physical capacity. The conversation between support staff, teachers, principals, and trustees was rich and creative.

For me these discussions are directly related to conversations we are having as

a board, especially as we are currently in a new cycle of strategic planning. We see these themes arising in a variety of facets of our work as a school board. For example, in implementing the new curriculum, in the use of the competency based Individual Education Plans and in changes to the funding structure for boards of education. I believe that SD 46 is a leader in equity in both access and outcomes and this is evidenced by our graduation rates, particularly that our indigenous students are graduating at the same rate as non-indigenous students.

I look forward to ensuring that equity continues to hold a prime focus in our district.

Now that we are getting finer weather, most of us will be outside more with our dogs and enjoying the local trails and beaches. Perhaps a young dog needs to learn to come when called or the recall needs fine tuning before they can be trusted off-leash.

Here are some tips to help teach a dog to come when called.

Note what your individual dog finds rewarding.

Teaching your dog to come on command involves rewarding him when he does come.

Rewards are anything your dog really likes a lot. Every time you have something the dog loves to do (like a car ride for example), call the dog and use the car ride as the reward.

Pick a safe enclosed space and use games to make coming when called fun.

“Puppy in the middle” is a game where two or more people call the dog back and forth using the puppy’s name once and then rewarding the dog with a quick squeaky toy game or food and praise/petting when he comes to the person who called him.

“Hide and seek” helps with the recall and allows the dog to problem solve (locating their person). When the dog

is not looking, hide nearby with good treats and/or your dog’s favorite toys, call the dog and reward her when she finds you.

If your dog loves to play ball, say “come” as she returns with the ball (so she makes a strong association between running toward you and the word “come” or whatever your recall word is). Immediately throwing the ball again is the reward for coming back to you.

Use a longline attached to the back ring of a harness on the dog and practice the recall in a variety of locations, rewarding every time your dog returns to you. Increase the distractions slowly so the dog has many opportunities

to do the recall correctly.

Be reasonable in your expectations. We have bred some types of dogs to be independent of people, so those dogs may take more time to learn a good solid re-

Gibsons wrestles with unauthorized “tents” Gibsons Recycling received approval at the March 19 Gibsons council meeting to erect a tent for storing and processing cardboard at its Venture Way facility. The 1,600-square-foot structure will be 22 feet in height. As the Town’s bylaws do not permit tents, a Temporary Use Permit is to be issued.

The permit will be valid for three years and the firm will be able to apply for one threeyear extension of the permit.

Council considered public comments supporting and opposing the application. To address potential impacts of the tent on the views from

nearby residential properties, a member of the public suggested that the Town request that a tent colour other than “glaring white”.

“This will be one of the smaller tents in the area, and this property is the only one that has come forward with an application for temporary authorization,” said Mayor Bill Beamish. There are at least four other tent structures on industrial and commercial properties within the Town. At the meeting, council also received a letter from an owner of another business, G. Harris Diesel, looking to erect a similar but much

larger temporary structure.

This owner requested assistance in bringing development on his property into compliance with the Town’s rules. Council asked its staff to look at ways to make this possible.

Chief Administrative Officer Emanuel Machado confirmed that Town staff will contact owners with unauthorized tents on their properties to discuss Temporary Use Permit applications. He noted that tents often start out as temporary measures but in some cases, they have remained in place for years.

An Update on BC Ferries’ Langdale Terminal Redevelopment Plan Hello Sunshine Coast Residents, We wanted to keep you up-to-date as our team continues to move forward with the Langdale Terminal Development project. We completed our engagement sessions and will have a summary report posted on our webpage in the next few days. Parking lot ticket machine cover installed In my February update, I mentioned the feedback I received from a customer about installing a larger cover over the ticket machines in the long-term parking lot.

I’m pleased to let you know that the extended roof is now installed. We hope this helps keep our customers standing in line dry during poor weather.

It’s helpful for us to hear our customers’ point of view when it comes to potential improvements. If you have any feedback about the terminal or things we can do to improve your experience, please let me know.

Rezoning, permits and paint lines In March, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) Board rezoned the terminal property to Marine One zone. This is a big step in keeping the project on schedule and completes the process started in 2017. We also completed our archeological site investigation under the supervision of Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The investigation did

not identify any archeological sites. The next step is to monitor a targeted area close to the shoreline during construction. The archeological permit we received is another step in keeping the project on schedule.

If you’ve been travelling lately, you may have noticed all the paint lines on the ground at the terminal. These lines mark the completion of our underground utility assessment. We used a variety of technologies, including ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic tracing, to confirm the location of underground pipes and mark the terminal. This important task ensures we minimize any underground conflicts during construction, which in turn will save time and money.

What’s next We are working on construction details and planning, particularly looking at potential construction impacts.

We will be working with the SCRD, BC Transit, and other local stakeholders to identify impacts and how we can reduce them. We are on schedule and expect to be on site to start the first stages of work this summer. We’ve planned construction on the new overhead walkway and terminal building to start in the fall, and be complete within three years. We’re excited about these improvements and are confident they will enhance your experience at the terminal and contribute to improved safety of the terminal.

Starting May 4, British Columbians will be getting a new area code, bringing the provincial total to five. Get ready to start seeing phone numbers that start with 672.

Back in 2001, 10-digit dialing was introduced to Metro Vancouver and then, seven years later, in 2008, the rest of the province followed suit. That meant that whether you were calling across town or across the country, you needed to include the area code of the number you were dialing.

Each area code has the capacity to service nearly eight million new customers, but this begs the question: why do we need so many phone numbers? Thanks to the mass adoption of wireless devices over the past 20 years, we go through phone

numbers quicker than ever.

The Canadian Numbering Administrator predicts that Canadians will run out of phone numbers by 2040.

When that happens, it’s anticipated the CRTC will introduce four-digit area codes.

Seventy per cent of Canadians have a smart phone, which explains why we go through so many numbers.

If you own a cell phone and are reading this, you probably want to know how you can make sure you’re getting the best cell service on the Sunshine Coast.

A Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS) report shows that Bell received the most customer complaints followed by Rogers. Of the Big Three, Telus had the fewest.

According to the Canadian Cellular Towers Map, Rogers has five towers on the Sunshine Coast. Bell has no towers however; Bell and Telus have a history of sharing infrastructure. Lastly, Telus is shown to have dozens of

towers.

Prices change so frequently, it’s impossible to say who provides the best deal. One tip is to include Virgin, Koodo, and Fido in your comparison shopping. They’re owned by the Big Three and provide identical service, often at substantial discounts.

While it’s difficult to say who provides the best cell service, Rogers’ high number of complaints and low number of cell towers puts them on the bottom of my list.

My opinion would be, if you’re moving from Vancouver and have a Rogers cell phone, change to Telus before you make the move.

Or, if like me, you have held off making the switch from Rogers, don’t wait any longer. It’s easy and it makes a huge difference.

In an ongoing effort to preserve this land, Greenlane Homes is currently in the final stages of securing a covenant with The Land Conversancy in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Conservation Association and the Town of Gibsons. This covenant will protect more than 23 acres in an effort to maintain this historic landmark.

The Touchstone at Gospel Rock development is set to be one of Gibsons’ first master-planned communities. The final build-out will include 36 market rental apartments, 360 single and multi-family homes, and a boutique inn-style hotel, offering residents across the Sunshine Coast access to local housing, in a premium location.

We’re lucky here on the Sunshine Coast to have a thriving Habitat for Humanity Village, that is continually expanding and creating opportunities for new homebuyers.

“We’re helping families realize their dream of homeownership,” says Ronnalee McMahon, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast. “There is a moment of pure joy when you see a family sign that last sheet of paper that sets them on the path to home ownership. The sense of accomplishment, pride and independence that families experience crossing the threshold have been building since the early moments of turning the soil and hitting the first nail. They have invested 500 volunteer hours and worked hard to call their home their own by sorting pop cans at our Salish Soils Recycling Centre or assisting customers with their purchases at our ReStore. These moments are memories in the making and ones that our families and dozens of our volunteers, corporate and community partners often reflect upon when we meet up for a coffee or a meal together”.

Until April 26th, 2019, Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast is accepting applications into our Homeownership Program. We accept families based on three principles: need for adequate housing, ability to pay and willingness to partner with Habitat. Qualified families meet the following criteria.

• Canadian Citizens or permanent residents • Residents of the Sunshine Coast for 6 months or more • Have at least one child aged 10 or younger living with them or a child with a disability who could not live alone under the age of 16 • Currently do not own a home, vacation property or land anywhere in the world • Are unable to obtain adequate housing by qualifying for a conventional homeowner mortgage • Your financial situation qualifies you for our program and you are able to manage the financial obligations of homeownership • Have a stable source of income

How to keep deer off your garden With more than 60 different species of deer worldwide, there’s a good chance individuals will have some sort of interaction with these majestic animals at one point during their lifetimes.

Deer, which live on all continents except Antarctica, can survive in everything from mountainous areas to wet rainforests to suburban neighborhoods. These herbivores are voracious eaters that will search far and wide for their meals. Home landscapes tend to be easy pickings for foraging deer.

Many people are excited to see deer in their neighborhoods and yards because they can be such graceful creatures to behold. However, once deer start to munch on ornamental trees, annuals and flowering shrubs, the novelty of these animals may wear off. Furthermore, deer also can be covered in ticks that spread illnesses like Lyme disease. Here are some

tips to keep deer at bay.

• Avoid tasty morsels. Deer like English ivy, lettuces, impatiens, pansies, and hostas.

Fruit trees also are targets.

Choose other plants to grow, and wait until after early spring, when deer aren’t as concerned with regaining weight lost during the winter, to get them in the ground.

• Use fishing line to deter deer. Put a few stakes in the

ground and then run fishing line at a height of about three feet. Deer can sense movement but do not have keen vision. As the deer approach your garden, they’ll brush against the “invisible” fishing line and then get spooked off.

• Plant plants that produce strong aromas. The experts at Good Housekeeping suggest planting lavender and marigolds, which emit strong

aromas. Deer will be reluctant to walk through because the smell can interfere with their ability to find food and assess their environment via their sense of smell.

• Stock up on soap. The tallow in soap helps keep deer away, according to the University of Vermont Extension Department of Plant and Soil

Science. Scented soaps like Irish Spring may be especially good at warding off deer.

• Plant in levels. Raised beds and sunken gardens can discourage deer from coming into the yard because they aren’t avid climbers, offers the home and garden resource This Old House.

• Employ harmless scare

tactics. Deer are skittish, and any unfamiliar movement or sound may scare them away.

Cans hung from strings, sundials and lights can keep them at bay.

Deer will seek out an easy meal, but homeowners can take steps to safeguard their trees, flowers and shrubs.

Get ready for a great weekend of classical music when talented violinist Kai Gleusteen and pianist Catherine Ordronneau return to the School of Music in Madeira Park on March 30 and 31.

Gleusteen, originally from Calgary, began playing violin when he was just five years old. “My mother was a pianist,” says Gleusteen.

“She knew good teachers and [for her] the worst thing for a child was to be bored.

It was not her intention at all for me to be a musician.”

Though he was encouraged “to do it well” his parents also told him not to make music a career. At 18, he took a year off between high school and university to study German in Munich. After morning lessons, his afternoons were free. “And what did I do?” recalls Gleusteen. “I looked for places to practice [violin] all the time. I thought, if I’m so desperate about playing, maybe it’s really important to me.”

Gleusteen had already earned top prize at the Commonwealth Concerto Competition and the Skene Award by the time he was 17, along with forming his own chamber orchestra, The Group of Twelve. He attended the University of Michigan and went on to earn his Masters Degree in Music (Violin Performance) at Rice University before moving to Paris, play-

In 2000 he became the concertmaster of the Orchestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona where he has been based for the last 18 years.

Not bad for someone who wasn’t supposed to make music a career. “I was so anti-career,” Gleusteen says, laughing. “I’m a bad example to follow.” Though he has a full schedule of teaching and working with the orchestra, it’s the intimate playing of chamber music that he enjoys most. He and his wife, Catherine Ordronneau, an accomplished pianist, form the core of their chamber ensemble. Their duo concerts

receive rave reviews across Europe and North America.

“It seems we feel music similarly,” says Gleusteen. “We can rehearse and agree exactly on where it seemed to drag or seemed too fast. We know each other so well.”

Rather than finding touring to be a chore, they “make an adventure of it. It’s great to be able to tour together, because touring can be lonely,” says Gleusteen. “Going on stage is a wonderful experience if it goes well and it’s incredible to be able to share that.”

The repertoire for their March 30 concert will include sonatas by Brahms, Strauss and some Hungarian dances, while their March 31

concert will focus more on solos. “The atmosphere in Pender Harbour is so friendly and loving,” says Gleusteen of why he and Ordronneau keep returning. “You play in Berlin and the next day in New York, you never meet anyone. It’s much more pleasant to know your audience and have personal contact. It’s a much nicer way to share music.”

Internationally acclaimed and Governor General’s Award-winning author Steven Heighton will cap the Sunshine Coast Literary Readings’ 20182019 season with an evening of “adventure in literary form”, to be held April 6 at the Arts Centre in Sechelt.

Tip of the Week: Mercury turns Direct again after 3-weeks of retrograde motion in Pisces. Yet, it remains in very close conjunction with Neptune as it has since Spring Equinox, a status that continues until a couple of days after the New Moon in Aries on April 5.

And, it will remain in Pisces until April 17. So, we are not out of it yet.
