"This is obviously a complicated issue, and none of us are seeing much leadership or clarity coming from Ottawa," said Duggan. "Sechelt has an opportunity to get out ahead of this issue and be a shining beacon for how this could and should be addressed and resolved."

420 Hemp Shop, which has operated its retail location on Cowrie Street since 2002, opened a dispensary at the same location two months ago. Coastal Meds sells medical marijuana and other products such as topical creams, olive oil, bath diamonds, and gum. Some of the products are low THC, so there is no "high" associated with their use.

"The stigma is the biggest thing we're dealing with," said Duggan.

Sechelt council has directed staff to report on options for business licensing and zoning of medical marijuana dispensaries.

"The Sunshine Coast is the perfect place to set an example when it comes to the issue of compassionate cannabis regulation," said Duggan. “The last thing Sechelt needs is a long, drawn out and expensive legal battle... which apparently is the route Powell River has chosen to go." Donna McMahon

The manager of 420 Hemp Shop in Sechelt, Keith Duggan, would like to see the District of Sechelt be the first municipality in BC to "get it right" in dealing with medicinal marijuana dispensaries.

Municipalities across Canada are struggling to deal with a proliferation of new cannabis dispensaries. With police forces reluctant to pursue criminal convictions, some municipalities are using business licensing bylaws to close down these operations.

On May 13, the Powell River Peak reported that the City of Powell River issued cease and desist letters against two medical marijuana dispensaries, threatening fines. Neither holds a business licence and Powell River does not issue licences for businesses that contravene their Controlled Substance Property Bylaw.

The federal Minister of Health has announced that Canada will introduce legislation to legalize marijuana in 2017, but in the meantime the only legal way to buy medical marijuana is through Health Canada's mail-order system 420 Hemp Shop Manager Keith Duggan says that mail order doesn't give patients what they need, which is face-to-face compassionate consultation and instruction on the use of products.

Editorial Opinion Natural better than virtual The digital revolution is breaking new ground every day. Technology has a way of doing that. I remember when Hewlett-Packard introduced its first “laptop” computer, which stored a page and a half of writing. It revolutionized my life as a newspaper columnist, allowing me to write on planes or in a tent and submit articles through a phone. I never imagined the steady advances that would lead to today’s powerful laptops, tablets and handheld computers.

When I first heard about virtual reality, I was invited to put on the goggles and experience it. Crude as those first images were compared to what’s available now, I was immersed in the scenes. It was impressive and exciting, but I suggested that people should be wary of unintended consequences, because virtual reality could eventually appear better than reality.

With virtual reality, people could race a car and experience all the heart-thumping adrenalin of the real thing, then crash and walk away unharmed. Why go for the real experience when a virtual one would be risk-free?

During a recent visit to Montreal, I had the opportunity to watch the latest iteration of the digital revolution. It was mindboggling. I swam with whales and zoomed through a forest, listening to actual sounds, along with music and narration.

I’ve been intrigued by the possibility that this technology could enable people to have such incredible experiences with whales, fish and other animals that we would no longer feel the need to imprison animals in aquaria and zoos.

I have no doubt virtual reality is going to have a huge impact. But as with all new technology, there will be unintended repercussions, the greatest of which will be further estrangement from nature. Studies show that because people evolved out of nature, we need that connection with the natural world for mental and physical well-being.

Author Richard Louv categorizes a suite of childhood problems — including bullying, attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity — as “nature deficit disorder”, induced or worsened by too little physical exposure to nature. The average Canadian kid today spends more than six hours a day glued to a screen — mobile phones, computers, televisions — and less than eight minutes a day outside.

Some proponents claim virtual reality will stimulate children to spend more time outside. But why bother when the virtual world seems better than the real one? I’m sure innovation and creativity will continue to drive the technology to new frontiers. I’m just as sure there will be enormous unexpected and damaging consequences if we aren’t careful.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Forest fire plans?

I live in Roberts Creek on our beautiful Sunshine Coast.

I'm on the edge of the forest with over-80 foot trees in my back yard.

Reading and watching the news about the massive forest fires in and near Fort McMurray has me feeling very uneasy concerning the risk of fires here abouts.

A couple of years ago, the mayor of Fort St. John, a woman, master minded evacuees in her town. Both humans and animals were unbelievably well cared for.

What plans are in the making by the mayors of Sechelt and Gibsons presently?

You can bet I'm not the only person wondering about this.

There are many beautiful houses filled with family treasures along Beach Avenue in Roberts Creek, as well as other gorgeous neighbourhoods.

Most likely these homes are very well insured. Insurance, however, gives you money but not the memories that are old family treasures evoke.

So the question again, what plans have been or are being made?

Good news

You published my letter a few months ago about my near demise crossing the street at night in the crosswalk (“Close call”, the Local, Nov.26, 2015). I was not hit, but it was close.

I sent that letter to the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Health (an injured senior could eat up quite a bit of health care dollars).

I received a letter from Transport Minister Todd Stone and there will be lighting (of some kind) going in at the Teredo/Trail intersection.

Cadets in flight

Cadets from 858 Skookumchuk Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron (RCACS) hosted a flying, survival and leadership camp last weekend (May 14-15) at Sechelt Airport. Cadets from three squadrons took turns to fly from Sechelt to Texada to Qualicum Beach and back in three Cessna 175s. Each time the plane touched down the cadets changed seats so every cadet took the controls under the supervision of volunteer pilot instructors.

Whilst a group of cadets was flying, the other cadets were practicing air crew survival. They learned what to do in the unlikely event of an aircraft coming down unexpectedly. Topics taught included wilderness first aid, shelter building, fire starting, and map and compass tech-

niques.

The cadet program teaches senior cadets to become instructors and the leadership skills of these cadets were monitored as they taught these life skills. Although it sounds like an intensive weekend, the sound of laugher was prevalent and old friendships were rekindled.

The cadet program teaches youth to be independent, to be leaders in any situation.

Survival life skills are invaluable any time you head out into the back country and as for the flying…well we are AIR cadets. Most of our training is carried out in an aviation environment and there are scholarships available for cadets to obtain their pilot’s licence.

858 RCACS meet once a week on Wednesdays at Davis Bay Elementary school in Sechelt between 6 and 8:30pm. Anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 who would like to join should contact the squadron at 604-740-2317.

Farmers market coupons ‘a win-win’ This summer more than 70 low income families and seniors on the Sunshine Coast will enjoy increased access to fresh local fruits and vegetables through the Nutrition Coupon Program, a partnership between Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and the BC Association of Farmers' Markets.

"It's a win-win for both families and farmers," said Meghan Molnar, Public Health Dietician for Vancouver Coastal Health. "I recognize that it's only a drop in the bucket for food security, but it gets families out to farmer's markets, which kids especially enjoy, and they meet local farmers, who also

benefit."

The Nutrition Coupon Program was first piloted on the Sunshine Coast in 2009, and now includes the Gibsons, Roberts Creek and Sechelt Farmers' Markets. In 2016, the program will provide $15 worth of coupons per week for 16 weeks, redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Molnar is working with Celia Robben, Manager of the Gibsons Friday Farmers' Market to raise funds for the program so it can be expanded to reach more families. Last year they raised $1,600. So far this year they have raised $1,000 from a Sunshine Coast Credit Union sponsorship and a May 11

fundraiser hosted by Persephone Brewing, and they will continue to take donations online at www.share-there. com until the end of May. "Fifteen dollars a week may not sound like much, but is quite a lot when you're working for $10.45 an hour," noted Robben. "We'd like to get as many families enrolled as we can."

Coupons are distributed through the Sechelt First Nation, Sechelt Seniors Centre, VCH Nurse Family Partnership and programs such as Strong Start, Bellies and Babies, Infant Development, and Tibetan Resettlement.

Surveying the seniors’ care homes On May 9, BC Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie announced the launch of a province- wide survey of residents living in 303 publicly-subsidized care facilities in BC. "For the first time in this province we are going to every care facility and we are asking every resident and their most frequent visitor, a number of questions about their quality of life in the care facility," said Mackenzie. The survey will include questions about privacy, food, safety and security, comfort, respect and responsiveness of staff, personal relationships, medications and activities in the facility.

Three Sunshine Coast facilities will be included in the survey: Christenson Village, Shorncliffe, and Totem Lodge.

Local resident Sue Jackel, who sits on the Sunshine Coast Seniors Planning Roundtable, is one of 30 seniors from around the province who form the Seniors Advocate's advisory council.

She noted that gathering information on care facilities

was one of the recommendations in the 2012 Ombudsman's Review of BC's Home and Community Care System.

"I think it will help families who have an immediate need and people who are looking at their own future here to know what our resources are and what the gaps are, and maybe put a little bit of pressure on the health au-

thority to try and meet those needs," said Jackel, noting that the data will also inform planning by government and health authorities.

The Office of the Seniors Advocate is currently taking applications for volunteers to help survey residents.

Canada is the only country that commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday. Federal government protocol dictates that, on Victoria Day, the Royal Union Flag is to be flown from sunrise to sunset at all federal government buildings— including airports, military bases, and other Crown owned property across the country— where physical arrangements allow

(i.e. where a second flag pole exists, as the Royal Union Flag can never displace the national flag).

The holiday has been observed in Canada since at least 1845, originally falling on the sovereign's actual birthday, and continues to be celebrated in various fashions across the country on the fixed date; the holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance. It is a federal statutory holiday, as well as being a holiday in six of Canada's ten provinces, including BC, and all three of its territories.

Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, May 24 was made by law to be known as Victoria Day, a date to remember the late queen, who was deemed the "Mother of Confederation".

Over the ensuing decades, the official date in Canada of the reigning sovereign's birthday changed through various royal proclamations until the haphazard format was abandoned in 1952.

That year, both Empire Day and Victoria Day were, by order-in-council and statutory amendment, respectively, moved to the Monday before May 25 and the monarch's official birthday in Canada.

The holiday is known in Pender Harbour as “May Day” and is colloquially known in parts of Canada as May Two-Four; a double entendre that refers both to the date around which the holiday falls (May 24) and the Canadian slang for a case of 24 beers. Pender Harbour’s biggest event of the year, May Day, happens this Saturday May 21 in beautiful Madeira Park.

Second in longevity only to Hyack Days in New Westminster for a continuous BC community festival, May Day in Pender Harbour turns 71 this year.

Sherri Halliday, this year’s committee chair, took on the monumental task, when it appeared that May Day might not happen, for lack of volunteers. Unwilling to see

this tradition fall by the wayside, she cajoled, begged and conscripted a core of people including volunteers from previous years who were crucial to making the event happen. Sponsors in this tiny community with a huge heart stepped forward as they always do for anything Pender Harbour.

Events for the day include a pancake breakfast, a kids fishing derby, games and activities for children and adults, art and craft vendors

of every description and more. Music for the day’s events will be the grooves of Poppa Greg and the Chillin’ Dylans.

The annual parade, the highlight of the event starts at 11am, but the road into Madeira Park closes at 10:30am, so don’t be late.

Bring sunscreen and an umbrella. And stay the entire weekend to enjoy The Attack of Danger Bay long boarding events, celebrating their 15th year of craziness. Submitted

BioBlitz inventories biodiversity Volunteers hiked and crawled over Simson Provincial Park on South Thormanby Island, diving, wading, observing, photographing and documenting the flora and fauna.

It was the Ruby Lake Lagoon Society’s eighth annual BioBlitz, held this year on South Thormanby, near Halfmoon Bay. About 75 volunteers took part in the 24-hour event, running from noon Saturday, May 14 to noon Sunday.

The volunteers inventoried the biodiversity of the park, including birds, bats, amphibians, plants, insects, and marine life. Summer students from the Iris Griffith Centre also scoured beaches and bays for garbage, filling an entire dumpster at Cooper's Green Park with debris, most of it styrofoam from docks and floats.

The goal of this annual event is not only to provide scientific information, but to popularize science and inspire naturalists of all ages.

Jill Sullivan’s latest collection of fibre wall art, No Words Necessary, runs at the FibreWorks Gallery May 21 to July 3. Sullivan has been sewing and knitting for the last fifty years. She married straight out of high school, making clothes and bedding for her children and herself, without any formal training. “I had no instructions,” says Sullivan. “So I just did whatever turned my fancy.”

Raising a family and working with her husband at their construction company didn’t leave Sullivan much time to attend quilting or sewing groups until moving to the Sunshine Coast in 1992.

Once she joined such groups, Sullivan realized she had her own way of doing things. “I was never a fan of buying a pattern,” she says. “I couldn’t see the point. Then it wasn’t really yours.”

About two years ago, a member of Quilters Out of Bounds, a group Sullivan belonged to, suggested the topic of ‘humans being.’ “I had a problem with this topic for a while,” Sullivan remembers. “Then one day I started cutting stencils and I was hooked.” She’s created

28 pieces for the show, each with the outline of humans in them, always in groups, never alone. “It’s about their relationships with each other,” Sullivan says. Unlike many fibre artists, Sullivan works with dyes, not paints, and uses whole cloth, rather than sewing pieces together. “It’s a different approach,” explains Sullivan. “Using whole cloth and using dyes like paint. It gets tricky because you can’t really use dyes like paint.” Yet, as throughout her career, that doesn’t stop Sullivan from forging her own path. Her process is very much a journey where she’s never sure where she’s going to end up though she has a destination in mind. “I’m not an artist who has figured out to how to take what’s in my head and reproduce it,” she laughs.

In addition to SCRD staff and the local director, most of the other directors will attend these dialogues in order to hear public feedback and make effective decisions at SCRD committee and board meetings. Bringing staff and community face-to-face, this new initiative will enhance communication at public meetings and enable those attending to share correct information with their neighbours. Earlier this month, councillors and directors from Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast met on Gambier Island to hear about new programs from provincial and federal elected representatives and staff. These officials brought everyone up-to-date on what was being done to address concerns specific to Howe Sound. Councillors and directors from the other areas then had an opportunity to discuss their local problems.

Dr. Carol Stuart, Dean of VIU’s Health and Human Services department, says the Infant Development Programs that Brynelsen helped establish made a huge contribution to this shift in opportunities because they supported families to maximize the development of their children as soon as a developmental delay became apparent. “The focus was not on treatment or a cure, but rather on recognizing the diversity of abilities we all have and the unique contribution any child makes to a family and to friends and society.”

Ever wondered what Sechelt looked like in the early 1920s? Or what the school in Egmont looked like in the 1930s? Imagine being able to search more than 7,000 photographs that document the development of the Sunshine Coast since the early 1900s. At the Museum that’s what we get to do every day, searching our photo database for research requests, newspaper articles and social media posts. Now, you too can have access to the Museum’s images on your tablet, phone and home computer—our entire collection of photos as well as a selection of archival documents are now available online.

The collection includes images of people, places and events up and down the Sunshine Coast, including from Port Mellon to Jervis Inlet. Search the photograph

The Gibsons and Sechelt public libraries and School District 46 have joined forces to increase support for children and their families to improve literacy skills. Our first step in achieving this goal is to ensure that every student in the district has a library membership. Earlier this month, thanks to help from School District Superintendent Patrick Bocking and his staff, more than 900 library registration forms went home with students in grades 3 – 7 in schools across the district.

Later this month library staff will be visiting each elementary school, setting up a pop-up library to collect forms, issue library cards and provide information to students about the different services and activities offered at our libraries.

The visit will also provide an opportunity for library staff to start engaging and informing students about our Summer Reading Club programs. Summer Reading Club is a free provincial program offered at public libraries; the program promotes the joy of reading and helps better prepare kids for their return to school in September, ensuring that they don’t fall behind on their reading skills during the summer.

Continuing our promotion of childhood literacy, the public libraries will celebrate Library Month in October with a visit to the schools and a program designed for children in grades K to 2. Our goal is to reduce barriers of access, make the process of getting a library card even

collection by keyword, date or description. Another intriguing option is to use the random image option. You never know what inspiration or treasures you might find. Some of the images date back to the late 1800s and the database includes the popular collections of Helen McCall and Harry Winn. The database is free to use and archival documents are being added weekly. If you wish to purchase high-resolution images for personal or educational use, you can do that too. It’s as simple as filling out an online order form. High resolution images cost $15

per digital file.

Digitization is a win-win for museums–once the source material is scanned, we do not have to access the original, which lessens mechanical wear and other preservation concerns. At the same time, we make it easier for you to access the images.

The advantage of learning about public libraries extends beyond elementary grades and stretches into secondary and post-secondary education, as tasks evolve from leisure reading and factfinding to the expectation of academic research.

Using an online database, we can work with teachers to introduce the same types of tools students will access in university, and that their professors will expect them to use, as they work their way

through the education system. Literacy is about reading, critical thinking, developing life skills and broadening our minds. We are excited and honoured to be partnering with School District 46, Superintendent Bocking and our team of exceptional teachers on the Coast.

The message of aloha from a master Esteemed Hawaiian emissary and hula master, Puna Kalama Dawson, will be giving a public presentation at Davis Bay Hall, Saturday May 28 from 7-9pm.

As a descendant of Queen Kalama and Hawaiian kahunas, Puna has embraced her responsibility to perpetuate Hawaiian culture. She is a “Kumu Hula” (a master teacher) of traditional Hawaiian dance, a recording artist and composer who has won many awards.

But she is also a community leader, activist and spiritual leader who has initiated Hawaiian language schools

and social housing projects.

Puna is also a cultural emissary. She travels the world to share Hawaiian culture and the message of “aloha” (universal love and peace).

It is quite stunning that she is coming to the Sunshine Coast to spread this life-affirming message and to share her artistry. “In the Name of Aloha” is a delightful combination of music, talk story, hula, chant, film and Puna’s charismatic personality.

Tickets are available at the door. A sliding scale donation of $15/20 is suggested to help pay travel expenses.

On May 15, an RCMP officer in Roberts Creek observed an ATV driver fail to stop at the intersection of Roberts Creek Road and Lower Road. The officer tried to pull over the ATV, but it quickly sped ahead and turned onto a side-road, tossing a female passenger onto the roadway. The officer stopped to check on the female, while apparently the ATV driver took no notice of his missing passenger, and continued to flee. Fortunately

the passenger was not seriously injured.

A few hours later, the same officer observed the same ATV blow through the same stop sign, and again it fled when the officer activated his emergency lights. By that time the diligent officer had visually identified the ATV driver, and went to his residence to try to locate him, in an attempt to prevent further dangerous driving. The driver returned home shortly after-

wards and tried to flee again when he saw police, but his ATV got stuck on the driver’s property, and the driver fled on foot.

“The irresponsible behaviour demonstrated by this ATV driver was outright dangerous, and it is fortunate that no one was seriously hurt,” said Cst Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP. “Needless to say, the ATV has now been impounded.”

On May 12, a southbound driver reported mischief to her vehicle after she noticed something being tossed out of the window of a white north-

bound vehicle in the 3300 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek. The object, which appeared to be a white dinner plate, struck the southbound vehicle on the hood, shattered and scattered up the windshield. The startled driver was able to maintain control of her vehicle and drive home where she discovered the plate had caused minor damage where it struck the car. The matter has been referred to ICBC. ••• On May 13, police attended a single vehicle incident in the northbound lane of Highway 101 near Roberts Creek Road,

Roberts Creek. The driver and passenger were driving along when their car drifted over onto the soft shoulder and caught the edge. The passenger may have grabbed the wheel in an attempt to help correct the vehicle and the driver may have confused the brake and accelerator, causing the vehicle to enter the ditch and rotate multiple times before coming to a rest. The vehicle had to be towed from the scene. The driver and passenger were transported to hospital, but injuries are not believed to have been serious.

Roy passed away peacefully at Normanna Care Home in Burnaby on November 2, 2015. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Geraldine (Gerry) in 2014. He will be sadly missed by his nieces Lynda (Robert) Davey, Brenda (Aidan) O’Leary, Marnee (Dalton) Watson, and many great nieces and great nephews. Roy worked for many years as a lineman for BC Tel (Telus) until he retired and he and Gerry moved to their dream home in Madeira Park on the Sunshine Coast. Roy spent many happy days tending his well-manicured lawn, playing golf and going fishing. The family would like to thank the staff at Normanna for their kindness and care. It is with great sadness that the family of Merfyn Jones announces his sudden passing, at the age of 74, on Wednesday May 4, 2016 at his home in Madeira Park as a result of cardiac arrest.

In his early years he worked a team of Clydesdale horses in the logging industry in Wales. He had his first motorcycle at the age of 16 and had a passion for British motorcycles ever since. Merfyn apprenticed for Balfour Beatty as a lineman, and met Jackie in 1960.

In 1965 Merv and Jackie were married in Shrewsbury, England and in 1968 emigrated to Canada with 3 children.

With a new baby in Canada, Merv continued his lineman apprenticeship with BC Hydro and settled at the Vanderhoof Hydro branch where he worked for over 20 years. He transferred to the Sechelt Hydro and retired from BC Hydro at the age of 60. Still young and full of energy he spent another 5 years working for Midway Power on the Sunshine Coast.

During the past 10 years of retirement Merfyn would spend the summers in Madeira Park where he was always helping drive the delivery trucks for his son Russell’s building supply stores. Winters he would enjoy golfing and the active social network of friends in Palm Springs, California.

Merfyn enjoyed darts, golfing, motorcycles, Welsh music, and was a long time Legion member both in Vanderhoof and Madeira Park.
