Letters to the Editor – Opinions Correction Our Editorial last week “Get Your Vote On” reported that Sechelt, Gibsons and SCRD issue mail ballots. The SCRD does not. Editor

Ruined dinner To Mike Corrigan, President, BC Ferries, and Mr. Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation. Dear Mr. Corrigan: Due to the misguided cuts to the Sunday schedule of the Queen of Surrey on the Langdale - Horseshoe Bay run, my highly anticipated Thanksgiving Dinner with family has been ruined, along with dozens of other families. Being a regular ferry user, I checked the website an hour before the 11:30 am sailing. Being the middle day of a long weekend, I thought it prudent to check. Not early enough, it turned out, as the ferry was almost full. So my wife and I hurried to the car and rushed to the terminal. We found a rather chaotic ϐ team was valiantly trying to control the upset travelers. As it turned out, approximately 50 cars, full with Thanksgiving Day travelers, were left behind, including mine. To my horror, I checked the schedule to discover the next sailing was not for another 3 hours and 15 minutes! It is my understanding that this chaos and overload situation is a regular occurrence on Sundays, with resultant anger and lost faith in the BC Ferry service by coastal residents and by valued tourists. Could you please inform me and my fellow regular travelers on this run, as to when this ridiculous situation will be addressed, and when full service will return to our Sunday schedule. Yours truly, Wm. B. Forst

October is International Small Business Month. Throughout the month various aspects of small business – that great economic driver – are celebrated by communities, chambers of commerce, banks and lending agencies such as the Business Development Bank of Canada, and professional organizations. October 20-24, 2014 National Business Women’s Week. NBWW helps to promote leadership roles for women and to increase opportunities for advancement professionally and personally. The concept of National Business Women’s Week originated with Emma Dot Partridge, Executive Secretary of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs from 1924 to 1927. Small Business Week 2014 runs from October 19 to 25. From its start as a small event in BC in 1979, Small Business Week has grown to become a national celebration with hundreds of activities providing training and development opportunities for entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs across the country spread across the whole month of October. The theme of Small Business Week 2014 is ‘Back to Basics. Reenergize Your Business.

Small Business Week is about celebrating the efforts and successes of Canadian small businesses, but it’s also about learning and the exchange of ideas. To grow, Canadian entrepreneurs across Canada need the right people, technology and business skills to beat the competition both here and abroad. Small Business Week 2014 is about sharing stories of success and helpful, practical advice on how to succeed with those who are ambitious for their companies. This week, The Local recognizes and salutes the small business owners, especially the women entrepreneurs in our community who are helping to grow the Sunshine Coast economy.

SMALL BUSINESS WEEK

Tips for female entrepreneurs Starting a business is no small task. But as the 21st century progresses, more and more female entrepreneurs are embracing the challenge of starting their own businesses. Though each entrepreneur has his or her own motivation for starting a business, the chance to be your own boss and turn an idea into a successful business is a driving force for both male and female entrepreneurs. And though male and female entrepreneurs face similar hurdles when starting a business, many female entrepreneurs might be more hesitant to set out on their own, fearing that old stigmas about women in the workplace might affect their chances at success by making potential investors ϐ of women setting out on their own. Though such concerns unfortunately are legitimate, women should not assume that such stigmas prevail. The continued success of female entrepreneurs has shed new light on just how successful female entrepreneurs can be. The following are a few tips for women looking to start their own business. Ȉ Ǥ female entrepreneurs have blazed the trail you are about to embark on, and such women can prove an invaluable resource as you begin your journey. Find a female business owner you can connect with and ask her for any advice she can offer. She might not be able ϐ regarding your business, but she can very well share stories of what you can expect as a woman setting out to start her own business. Ȉ ness plan. As unjust as it is, a stigma about women in the workplace still exists in the minds of some professionals.

This means women must be especially diligent and detailed when creating their business plan. One helpful hint is to act as if you are pitching yourself. Look at your business plan and ask if you would invest in yourself. Ask yourself the questions you would ask a fellow entrepreneur if he or she approached you with the same business plan you just developed. There’s no harm to be done by using every resource at your disposal, especially your own business savvy and experience. Ȉ ǯ ϐ business entirely on your own. Unless your business is going to be especially small, you’re going to need capital to start your business. If you think you ϐ your own, you might want to reconsider. A business loan or investors can help you plan for the unexpected. If you attempt to go it alone, open your busi ϐ business loan, the lending in ϐ has already been damaged and is less likely to succeed. That can make it harder to secure a business loan. Though it’s pos ϐ entirely out of your own pocket, it never hurts to partner up with a bank or a handful of investors. Ȉ tem. Many women with business experience might feel they need to prove something to themselves when starting their own business and need to do so entirely on their own. While that’s great motivation, underestimating the value of your support system, including your spouse, children and even ǡ Ǥ on these people who all want you to succeed, and turn their support into extra motivation.

What does it mean to be a mentor? Mentors can serve as ϐ people in need of professional guidance, providing the support or advice many need to break into a given industry. While mentoring is most commonly associated with the professional arena, it need not be restricted to corporate environments. When looking to give back to their communities, men and women may not Ǥ ǡ mentoring can be a powerful empowerment and personal development tool, for both mentors and the people being mentored. The following are a handful of tips to foster a successful mentoring relationship.

This will help shape the person you’re mentoring into an individual who can anticipate situations and deal with them on his or her own. Ȉ ϐ Ǥ ϐ paramount importance in a mentoring relationship. The person you’re mentoring should feel comfortable coming to you with any situation and have your support, as

trust is essential to the mentor-mentee relationship. Ȉ Ǥ ϐ toring, which can provide satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment that results from knowing you played an integral role in the success of another person. If your career is in a slump, mentoring may provide the breath of fresh

air you need to recharge. Mentoring also may give you insight into another person’s life, which can be used in your own personal development. As long as your goal is the success and support of the mentee, mentoring can be a selfless act that touches the lives of others. Formal mentoring programs exist, but mentoring relationships often begin when a less formal connection forms between two people. Should a friend, employee or colleague ask for your assistance in mentoring, embrace this compliment and make the most of your opportunity to aide in the growth of another person.

Books & Beyond Tracey Therrien Chief Librarian, Gibsons and District Public Library

October is National Library Month and this year’s theme is Libraries Inspire. How do libraries inspire you? The Canadian Library Association is gathering stories from across the country on the different ways libraries inspire and make a difference in our lives. Have you been inspired by a discovery at a library? Was it ϐ ǡ of music, a poem, a business idea, a library program or a book? Add your story to the many already posted on the website: librarymonth.ca. In Canada there are over 23,000 librarians or library clerks working in over 22,000 libraries located in 97% of

communities across the nation. More than 21 million Canadians have a library card, making public libraries the most popular cultural institution in the country! At the Gibsons & District Public Library we are combining library-month and the library’s 100th anniversary into one special day of celebrations. On Friday October 17th at noon Mark Forsthye from CBC Radio’s Almanac show is broadcasting live from the library. Mark and local guests will be discussing the role of libraries past and present. At 7:00pm that evening the library is hosting a Crime Writers’ Forum with authors William Deverell, Robin Spano, Gwen Southin, and Chevy Stevens. Everyone is welcome to join us at the library for these free events. If you haven’t been in the library lately you may be sur-

prised. We have over 40,000 items in the library, including e-readers, DVDs, CDs, magazines, audiobooks and over 65,000 downloadable eBooks and hundreds of online newspaper subscriptions for you to explore. Plus we have programs for the all ages including one-on-one computer tutoring, storytimes, conversation groups, book clubs, knitting clubs and more. How do you become a library member? All you need ϐ your current address. If you have questions about any library services, call us at the library 604-886-2130, visit our website gibsons. bc.libraries.coop or drop by; we are located at 470 South Fletcher. Why refinish? Whether you’ve had hardwood floors for a long rime or just discovered them under old carpeting, you’ve probably considered refinishing them. Waxing and/or buffing often provides a good shine but refinishing the floor is usually the only way to regain the original richness and beauty of the wood.

Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) A process of clearing the old to make way for the new continues. Yet it may also be that in making new associations old involvements are steadily fading away. Either way, change is in the air. This will lead you to new levels of power and responsibility. Creating a healthy lifestyle rhythm and practice is important to your success now and later.

Before the Sun leaves Libra and enters Scorpio time some extra insight about Libra will serve to explain an important feature of Astrological practice. Libra is the archetypal principle of cultivating harmony, fairness, balance, mutual respect and love in any relationship. Beyond our more personal romantic, familial, sibling, relative, friend, neighbor and so on relationships, even business relationships could, in the ideal, foster all of the above. Of course, cultivating a ϐ requires ongoing effort and can well be deemed a true art. Invariably, due to the laws of change, this cultivation is a process and a diplomatic one at that. Any relationship therefore, between individuals as well as between larger entities like companies, institutions, cities, states, provinces and countries (each may deemed ‘persons’) implies a ‘political’ process. ϐ ture of relationships and of life. The level and magnitude ϐ minor to the extreme but no relationship is entirely free of it. What is ideal and important for harmonious and peaceful resolutions is increased objectivity. There are two basic techniques used in Astrology to weigh and measure the quality of any relationship: Synastry and Composite. A Synastry Chart compares the ‘astrological chemistry’ between any two people. The principle of a ‘compound’ in chemistry lends a good example of this common approach. A Composite chart reveals the synthesis of the relationship. The principle of a ‘solution’ in chemistry supports a better understanding of this approach. There are also two types of Composite Chart, one that reveals the deeper purpose of the relationship and one that more fully illustrates the expression of that purpose.

Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) A social, cultural and artistic cycle continues to spiral upward. This is leading you to meet new people and make new friends. Professional afϐ mix. In fact, this will become your next major focus over the coming weeks. Especially if you have been diligent, practically wise and sincere, your efforts will be well rewarded soon.

extra important. Call it creating communion or inviting imagination…, either way a weave and synthesis of collective talents is a key to your success at this time. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) Reaching out to participate in the world with purpose and passion is a steadily emerging theme. In the short term, your main task may simply be to get comfortable with the prospects. Generating ideas and tapping your deeper destiny is also ideal. This new cycle will especially get underway in 2015. For now, focus on seeding dreams. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) Your public and professional world is on a roll. Success has required that you step out of your comfort zone. With your ambitions on a steady rise, simply relaxing would prove ironically stressful. Reaching out to be seen and heard is important. The window of opportunity is now open. Hopefully you have acted upon it. If you have not yet, do it now!

As is often the case, the old must make way for the new. Focusing upon long-term investments and/or relationship involvements is a core theme. Creating or inviting beauty in your home somehow is a source of inspiration. One way or another, this is a call to color your world. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) JYour world is changing and expanding. In both Synastry and Composite charts, the reality of change can also be added to the perspective and it is measured as current ‘Transits’ (position of the planets in the sky in real time compared to the Birth Chart) affecting both each individual ‘persons’. The other is called Progressions’ ϐ time representing change in both each individual person and the Composite charts they create together. Altogether, these represent techniques that provide profound and valuable insights towards greater respective and mutual objectivity. With this increased level of insight and awareness beyond subjective biases and projections, mutual understanding and diplomatic resolution can be achieved. One may even gain awareness regarding the ϐ and may thereby decide not to enter into the relationship as a consequence.
