The kelp is a monster in the sense that it is huge. Diane Bernard holds the fronds of a bull kelp up to the sunlight. The snipe (or trunk) stretches out of view; in the ocean, the stipe can grow to 150 feet, anchoring the kelp to the sea floor. Diane, and her husband George Butcher, founders of the Sooke-based company, Seaflora, are appearing Friday evening, Sept. 2 at the Mushroom and Seaweed Festival in Madeira Park. Seaflora harvests seaweed to make skincare products that are sold primarily through salons. Normally, the company would harvest only the fronds and leave the stipe, which will grow new fronds the following year. The BC coast is said to be home to more kelp species than anywhere else in the world. See story Page 12. PHOTO SUBMITTED
