“We keep it dry”

Fusion is the theme of this year’s Sechelt Arts Festival, and one of headliners is Forro Do Cana, above, described as Vancouver’s premier purveyor of forro. Forro is the music and dance of northeastern Brazil. One theory on the origin of the name is that forro is a derivative of a word meaning “great party”; another theory has it as a derivative of the English expression “for all”. If you combined the meanings – which, of course, you can’t since they are competing theories – you would have a “great party for all”. Which is a pretty good description of a two-week arts festival. In any case, Foro Do Cana will provide the closing performance of the Sechelt Arts Festival Oct. 19. The band, from the left, is Steve Charles (accordion, vocals), Sara Magal (vocals, percussion), Serena Eades (violin/rabeca, vocals), Phil Belanger (drums) and, on top of the couch, Mario Silva (seven-string guitar, vocals). New rural zoning for Sechelt Proposed changes to Sechelt’s Official Community Plan (OCP) sections relating to rural residential developments were discussed at the council meeting Sept. 18. At the meeting, council gave first reading to an OCP amendment bylaw for a number of land parcels in the Acorn Road area of West Sechelt. They moved the proposed bylaw to the referral stage. The same actions were approved for a zoning bylaw amendment to allow four one-acre single family residential lots to be created from one property on Acorn between Lewarne and Gowland Roads. This was the second zoning change proposal the current council had reviewed for that property. In February, council rejected a plan to allow an eight-lot development, asking staff to draft changes to the OCP’s approaches to secondary growth areas. In the OCP amendment proposal, a new rural residential zone designation was recommended. In the new RR-3 zone, minimum parcel sizes would be one acre. Gravel roads would be allowed. Staff asked council to recommend the amounts that should be charged for community amenity and affordable housing contributions on lots with the new zoning. Councillor Tom Lamb spoke in favour of lower contribution levels. He questioned the wisdom of imposing affordable housing contribution costs of a standard 20 per cent of the assessed value on developers of all residential properties. “If you put a contribution cost of $10,000 on a lot, the developer has to mark that lot up by $10,000,” said Lamb. “If it’s a lot with a house, a contribution of 20 per cent of assessed value is a $35,000 to $50,000 hit on the purchaser’s mortgage. I’d like to see Sechelt come up with a better method of funding affordable housing when it comes to contributions from smaller scale developments.” said Lamb. Councillor Alton Toth stat-

ed his view that lot sale prices were determined by market conditions and not development costs. Mayor Darnelda Siegers agreed with Toth’s analysis, as long as what the developer pays for the land, servicing, financing and other costs does not exceed the price that purchasers will pay for the lots. She stated that council does not know how development contribution levels are currently impacting the creation of lots. In her view, these could be negatively affecting the supply of new housing units in the community. Issues around allowing gravel roads also received some backlash from council. No one spoke in favour of requiring a higher road standard for areas with one acre lot sizes. Concerns were expressed about a proposed requirement that developers provide a security deposit that could be used to pay for road paving if required within three years of construction. Councillor Brenda Rowe stated that this would give those

that purchase the subject lots false hope that their road would eventually be paved. Council will be asked to decide on the conditions it recommends be applied to the new RR-3 zoning after it receives input from referral agencies and the Advisory Planning Commission. The public will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed bylaws at a future public hearing. A change in the community that will not go to Public Hearing is approval for a 12-room motel unit at the Sunshine Coast Campground along Highway 101 in Wilson Creek. This proposal will add to the existing camping facilities, by replacing an existing building and expanding into a swimming pool area. Council authorized a development permit for the change, on the condition that the project be built within two years after the owner receives approval of a septic system to accommodate the new use. Climate strike this Friday

No one who understands science questions whether humans are causing the climate to change to our detriment, mostly by burning fossil fuels. The evidence is indisputable. It’s been verified and accepted by every reputable scientific institution in the world, and by almost every government except the current, fact-averse U.S. administration. The only real debate is about how best to address it. The truth is that we need to deploy every available solution quickly and keep developing new ones. Many young people understand what their elders have failed to grasp: we’re jeopardizing their futures. Because adults aren’t acting quickly enough to solve the crisis, despite the abundance of solutions, young people are stepping up and speaking out in many ways and places. The #FridaysForFuture climate strikes have grown into a worldwide movement since then 15-year-old student Greta Thunberg began her solitary strike outside Sweden’s parliament a year ago. Thunberg recently arrived in New York, after a cross-Atlantic journey in a zero-emissions yacht, for a week of climate action from Sept. 20 to 27. She also plans to attend the Sept. 27 Montreal climate strike. Youth are asking everyone to join the strikes and activities. (On the Coast, there is a strike Sept. 27 in Gibsons, at Hwy 101 and Stewart Rd. in front of Persephone Brewery, at 11:30am.) “We strike so that in the United Nations meeting, when they speak, it is with our beliefs on their tongues. We strike so that when they raise their hands to vote, it is with the weight of our vision hanging from the tips of their fingers. We strike so that when they stand, it will be with the might of the youth, the workers, and the people,” School Strike for Climate Australia’s Evan Meneses said. Many of us grew up in times and places when we didn’t fully realize that our postwar shift to consumerism as economic policy was depleting Earth’s resources and throwing natural systems and cycles, including the carbon cycle, out of balance. We maybe had an inkling that some wealth in the developed world came at the expense of people in poorer nations, but we didn’t consider that driving around in large vehicles and burning gas were doing much more than causing some pollution, easily resolved by removing lead from gas and making fuel-efficient cars. Dropping what you’re doing for one or more days to get out and march may not sound like much, but the more people show up, the louder the message to governments, media, industry and society. Let’s all get out there to demand action — and show the kids we care. David Suzuki

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Words of wisdom Our daily dose of dietary fibre required to meaningfully respond to the climate crisis may come from a young Swedish teenager. Greta Thunberg’s words and actions need no introduction. In just one year she has galvanized generations of youth and put adults worldwide on notice. Here are a few of her sound bites and the example they offer us all: • “This is a crisis. Act like it.” Greta’s power of one. Her words cut like a knife but her actions speak loudest. This is a stinging reminder of the simple formula, words – action = 0. • “This is not the time and place for dreams. This is the time to wake up.” Her

plain spoken, uncompromising approach speaks truth to the power of status quo. We all need to hear it served straight up with no wiggle room for interpretation. Taking this tack helps to hold ourselves and folks around us accountable. • “Some people say we should study to become climate scientists or politicians, so that we can, in the future, solve the climate crisis. But by then, it will be too late. We need to do this now.” Thank you Greta. The days of delay and procrastination for all of us are over. • “This is what people power looks like.” She’s right and it’s predominantly female. Women, particularly young women represent the majority who are pushing

Simon Hocking, Celso Machado, and Kevin Crofton. Our efforts, and the funds raised, will help people in deep need in the Bahamas. Michael Maser, organizer, Gibsons

for climate activism. That has to change guys, and change fast. Perpetuating the straight jacket of patriarchy is just “so” old. • “Humans are social animals. We follow, and since no one else is behaving like this is a crisis, we think we should probably behave as they do.” Greta’s gift here is obvious – don’t wait for someone else. Jump in and help stir up the changes we need. Tim Turner, Gibsons

Time to act

I’ve been hearing lots of praise for Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager whose solo protest outside the Swedish parliament initiated the youth-led global climate strike movement. But when I ask people whether they will be attending the all-ages global climate strike this Friday, most answer in the negative. Greta herself has been clear that she and her fellow student activists are not interested in our praise. They are begging us adults to take action. During this week of global climate rallies, they ask us to attend an event to pressure our governments to act – now – on climate change.

There is an event on the Sunshine Coast this Friday (Sept 27) from 11:30am to 3:30pm, at Persephone Brewery in Gibsons. You’ll find details on Persephone’s facebook page, under the Events section. There is also an event in Vancouver on the same day, which starts at 1pm at Vancouver City Hall, followed by a march across the Cambie Street Bridge to the main branch of Vancouver Public Library. You’ll find details on the Extinction Rebellion Vancouver facebook page under Events. If you’re impressed with this young woman’s efforts to mobilize people against climate change, don’t just praise her... show up. Alison Taylor, Halfmoon Bay

An electric Tesla with hand controls In one year of ownership, the Lower Mainland’s Jacques Courteau has put over 40,000 kilometers on his Tesla Model 3. He added a few more with a visit to the Sunshine Coast Electric Vehicle Association’s fifth annual Electric Vehicle Festival on Sept. 21 in downtown Sechelt. Courteau’s was one of a handful of the all-electric powered four-door Tesla sedans at the event. None of these vehicles have standard instrument panels. Their speedometers and other gauges are integrated into a central touchscreen. Features that made Courteau’s car stand apart from the others were hand driving controls instead of a floor mounted accelerator and brake. Necessary, as he is paralyzed from the waist down. An avid promoter of electric vehicles, Courteau has no interested in going back to a fossil fuel powered vehicle. He has taken is Tesla to a number of display events to show how the technology integrated into the vehicle can be a boon to drivers with mobility issues. “This car has everything it needs to become self-driving,” said Courteau. “I believe it will become the car of choice for people who cannot currently drive due to their physical abilities. Tesla drivers will soon be able to turn on their vehicle’s global positioning system, program in a destination and the car will take them there. Their physical abilities will not impact their ability to travel on their own in the vehicle. It will not even matter if you are sighted or blind.” The range on Courteau’s performance model Tesla is over 450 kilometers. He took a 24,000-kilometer

road trip throughout North America this summer. He said he faced no issues in travelling between destinations on a single charge and always found two or three locations available for recharging when it was needed. Courteau has been paralyzed from the waist down for just over 10 years. His spinal cord was damaged in an accident after he lost consciousness due to extreme heat while driving his motorcycle. He does not relate his misfortune to is long time passion for driving performance cars and high-powered motorcycles. “It wasn’t a motorcycle crash, it was a mishap that occur on a mo-

torcycle,” said Courteau. This motor sport enthusiast had to take matters into his own hands to convert his new car to meet his needs. “There was no assistance from the Tesla company in converting the vehicle. I had to find my own ways to install the hand controls, which was much different that it was with the BWM vehicle that I had purchased previously,” said Courteau. A major challenge was modifying the accelerator and brakes which were originally mounted on the vehicle’s floor, as the batteries that powered the car were located immediately below them. Education Matters Pammila Ruth Chair, School District #46 School Board

September is always an exciting time of year for our district, even more so now with so many new things going on. After being approved by the board in June, we were excited to see the final results of our Strategic Plan in beautiful print at our September board meeting. Our strategic plan is supported by an

Dognapper! On Sept. 11 just before noon, an attempted dognapping occurred at a residence in the 5800 block of Spindrift Street, Sechelt. The suspect, a heavy-set blonde haired woman in her mid-40s, exited a white older model SUV and approached a tethered dog in the front yard with a leash in hand and tried to put the leash on the dog when the owner exited the house and confronted the suspect. The suspect fled but unfortunately, the dog owner was unable to obtain a licence plate. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-6359. Submitted by RCMP

implementation plan that will be followed throughout the year. Our agendas are set in accordance with the implementation plan, as is our communication plan, to make sure that we continue to make good decisions while staying focused on our goals, values and vision. Our vision is long-term and our message is clear: For our students to grow to be life-long learners and contributing global citizens. The Board’s vision encompasses everything from basic learning skills to life skills; from learning and understanding indigenous history and ways of knowing, to developing well supported health and arts skills. Our Strategic Plan works with three Circles of Care: Students, Staff and Community, to support our students to thrive in their learning journeys. In an effort to help this

journey along, this September, and all Septembers to come, no school supplies need to be purchased by any students and their families in our district. This regulation was passed last year and is in full-effect for this fall. Eliminating barriers to “free education” is part of the school act, and supplies for everyone removes the barriers for all students and allows them to feel fully a part of our learning communities. We are also thrilled to launch a new district website for September. While the new website has been available on-line for a short time now, it was officially introduced at our Committee of the Whole Meeting earlier this week. Our highly interactive site celebrates public education and makes district, school and program information easily accessible in a fun and creative way.

The Gibsons Public Library hosts a talk with Haida Bolton – BC’s first certified forest therapy guide – on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 6 pm, where she will share the history and practice of forest therapy, also known as forest bathing or shinrinyoku. “Forest bathing really is about immersing yourself in the ambience of the forest, and allowing its beauty to just wash over all of your senses, creating a … calming,

peaceful, welcome-home effect,” says Bolton. There are health benefits such as reducing anxiety, depression and sleep problems, and boosting the immune system. “The forest is the therapist,” Bolton explains. “And the guide opens the door and invites you to interact with it in healing and meaningful ways.” For more information or to register for this event, call the library at 886.2130. community educating people about responsible pet ownership and the prevention of dog bites. Studies have shown that children can recognize the difference between a happy and an angry dog but often do not recognize a fearful dog. Children can, however, be taught to recognize the signals that a dog is stressed and to change their own behavior toward the dog (Lakestani & Donaldson, 2015). Studies have shown that children learn, retain and apply information on safe communication with dogs. After doing a study on dog bites to children, researchers concluded that, out of 100 incidents, 67 children might not have been bitten had they and their parents been adequately educated on safe conduct towards dogs and that education could be the preventive measure in reducing the frequency of dog bites to children. (Kahn, Bauche, & Lamoureux, 2003) The “Doggone Safe” Program has dog bite prevention educators who teach children how to “be a tree” and avoid conflict with a dog, how to greet a dog, how to understand what a dog is trying to say. The program also provides educational materials for use in schools and information and resources on raising puppies and training dogs in ways that do not promote aggression. Back to the land on film If it had happened in America, “Midian Farm” would be a Hollywood script. Instead, its legacy is memorialized through a compelling point-of-view historical Canadian documentary. From 1971 – 1977, Midian Farm was a back-to-the-land social experiment created by a community of urban baby boomers from Toronto. Part of the youth counterculture movement during a period of social and political re-imagining, its utopian vision eventually collapsed. More than four decades later, filmmaker Liz Marshall unearths a transformative piece of family and Canadian history. The Gibsons Public Library hosts a special free screening of this documentary on

Thursday, Sept. 26. Doors 6:30pm, show at 7pm. Although Midian Farm was located in Ontario, many of its former residents now live on the Sunshine Coast. Credited cast includes locals John

Denham, Nancy Budd-Denham, Katherine Denham and more. After the screening, attendees will have a chance to ask questions. Call the library to register at 886-2130. Submitted

On Sept. 11, a suspicious male was reported in the 400 block of Aldersprings Road, Gibsons, after a resident received a knock on the door from a male

trying to sell three potatoes he was carrying in his hands. The resident declined and the male, described as hezavy-set Caucasian in his forties with frizzy brown hair, left in an older model white van. Other residents in

the area reported similar incidents. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 20196361. Submitted by RCMP

Flamenco

How much of flamenco is influenced by traditional Indian dance? What part of flamenco can trace its roots to ancient India? What elements of Indian culture is retained in contemporary flamenco dance and music? For the first time in Canada, international flamenco company “La Caramelita”, will unravel the mysteries, origins and nuances of flamenco in a mesmerizing, intimate and original production called “NRITYA”. It will be presented Saturday, Sept.28, 7:30pm at the Heritage Playhouse, in Gibsons. Tickets are $22 advance (eventbrite), $25 at the door. Led by Vancouver born artistic director, Deborah Dawson, the production is an Indo-Canadian woman’s exploration of her heritage through flamenco dance. Presented with incendiary emotion and hypnotic rhythms, NRITYA isn’t an Indian-flamenco fusion show but a musical tapestry that showcases the shifting contours of cross-culturalism and the power of plurality. the culinary offerings that are a fusion of West Coast and other cultural inspirations, to the closing performance by Forro Do Cana, this year’s Festival features the mixing of cultural styles, collaborations, and a host of multi-disciplinary events. Forro Do Cana is Vancouver’s premiere forro band, performing the music and dance of northeastern Brazil. The five-piece band was co-founded by violinist Serena Eades, a name Coasters may recognize as Eades grew up here and was once a member of The Rakish Angles. These days she is a member of popular world music group Delhi 2 Dublin. Forro Do Cana is a passion project for Eades. She was introduced to forro while studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. “I was like ‘whoa what is that?’”

The Sechelt Arts Festival runs October 5 to 20 and features 16 days of dance, music, visual arts, workshops and special events. This year’s theme is “fusion: the process or result of joining two or more elements together to form a single new entity.” From the special opening reception which will include

recalls Eades of when she first heard forro. “It felt like the evolution of fiddle music that I’d always wanted. The instrumental forros are very much like a Celtic or bluegrass or old time fiddle tune but with different Brazilian rhythms that are the underpinning. They take it to another level for me.” Local musician Celso Machado will be joining them as a special guest for their performance Oct. 19, where along with forro, they will be playing choro, a jazzier style of Brazilian music, and frevo, a high energy style often played at Carnaval. Also joining the band are dancers Andrea Monteiro and Samuel Santos performing forro, while Dan Zilseo, another locally raised artist, will be joining Monteiro for a frevo performance. Monteiro will also be giving a free workshop that afternoon for anyone who wants to get their moves down for what will surely become a dance party as Forro Do Cana bring a night of Brazilian music to the Coast. “It’s not complicated,” says Eades of dancing the forro. “Anyone can do it.” Though she studied classical music, Eades’ career took a sharp turn toward world music thanks in part to her openness to other cultures and curiosity about her instrument. “I’ve always been interested in travelling and exploring

how the violin has evolved and changed, how people play it and how it integrates into styles of music in different cultures,” she says. “I’m incredibly grateful for the way my path has unfolded thanks to all the people that I’ve encountered and been supported by. A huge part of that is the Sunshine Coast community. It’s definitely home.” Other Festival highlights include the opening performance on Oct. 5 of Becoming choreographed by Coast of Academy of Dance alumna Becky Izad and featuring over 30 dancers from Sechelt, Vancouver and Alberta in a fusion of ballet, jazz and modern dance. The Festival’s popular art exhibit will again be at the Seaside Centre until Oct. 20 with Fusion: Pop Goes the Art, featuring nine local artists working in a variety of genres. Upstairs at Seaside is the heritage exhibition, Through Helen’s Eyes, featuring pieces from the Helen Dawe archival collection of images, maps and clippings from 1870 to 1883, and photographs from the 1920s to the 1940s by Helen McCall. Both women played a crucial role in preserving the history of the Sunshine Coast and in their honour a proper English style tea and tour is being held October 6 with anyone named Helen admitted free of charge.

Celebrated author and composer, John MacLachlan Gray, will read from his 2013 best seller, “The White Angel”, at the Arts Centre in Sechelt, at 7:30pm, Saturday, Sept. 28. The evening, which kicks off the fall season of the Sunshine Coast Arts Council’s annual Reading Series, may also feature some sneak-previews from John’s current project tentatively titled “Vile Spirits”. One of the most versatile and multitalented creative artists in Canada, John’s storied career includes stints on the stage, TV, film and radio both as a playwright and a composer. He is probably best known for his landmark of Canadian musical theatre, “Billy Bishop goes to War”, which he wrote and composed with Eric Peterson in 1978. Gray received both the Governor General’s Literary award and a

Golden Globe for the musical, which was produced on and off-Broadway and released as a feature film in 2011. In later life, John turned to books as his preferred mode of expression and has published in both fiction and non-fiction genres. Admission is by suggested donation of $5 at the door. Horoscope Michael O’Connor Astrologer

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 19) Life is all about relationships and this should be especially evident to you now. An important feature of your practical focus directly includes exchanges and negotiations with significant others. Business themes are likely but so too are the most important relationships in your personal life and probably both. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20) In the deep end, you have entered a time in your life when bringing your authority down to earth is important. This means making yourself and your gifts more available. To this end, you may need the talents, expertise, and authority of others. In the forefront, lifestyle changes are underway. Connecting the dots, adapt your weekly rhythm to nurture your network. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) If you have been waiting for a fresh boost of creative inspiration, I have some good news. This is a call to give birth to new expressions. Admittedly, there are strong indications that this includes breaking free or moving-on from old perspectives, methods, and styles. So, expect a shift in your approach and be patient with its development. Cancer (Jun 22 – Jul 22) Like charity, beauty begins at home. Directing your focus to home and family comes naturally to you and is extra emphasized now. Meanwhile, dealing with lingering fears about health and livelihood is an important challenge to

overcome. It includes not conjuring negative scenarios with an overactive imagination. Change what you can; accept what you can’t. Leo (Jul 23 – Aug 23) Already you are receiving a flow of fresh ideas and now the larger flood waves are coming in. Your focus is squarely on practical results. To this end, you are willing to enter a learning curve. In fact, your ability to receive and integrate new knowledge stands to be stronger over the coming weeks than any other time in the year. Capitalize! Virgo (Aug 24 – Sep 22) Over the past several weeks, you have likely taken new leads and initiatives. Now, these have entered their next major phase. This is when you decide if it will actually fly or sell… Focusing to beautify is another aspect, perhaps even the most important one. In the bigger picture, this is a foundation phase so fortifying it at this time is ideal. Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22) The New Moon in your sign is sure to be activating you to take new leads. Deciphering your priorities is extra important now lest you succumb to scattering your focus. This has been a challenge to overcome all year. Positively, you are able to attend to a variety of fronts and meet the requirements on each of them. This month will see you push through. Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21) A busy time behind the scenes will not only continue, but it will also deepen starting this week. Your focus features questions about finances and opportunities and the risks you need to take. As confident as you feel, on one hand, the changes underway in your world may be unnerving, even for you. To break through, you

The Local - Thursday, September 26, 2019 15 probably need to take a new approach. Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) A dynamic social cycle for you suggests that you are getting a lot more attention of late. Hopefully, it is the kind of attention you want and linked to realities in your favor. There are indications that you are working extra hard. However, you probably can’t go any faster than you are already. Make the most of this cycle to get some extra wind in your sails. Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) Recognition is not the same as attention. Recognition refers to who you are and what you do and to getting fully acknowledged. It also often includes rewards or at least new opportunities. This window does not open very often and seldom as wide as it is now and over the coming weeks. So, if you feel that you want or deserve to be recognized, do what you can to make sure you get it. Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 19) Circumstances of light are directing your focus to see a bigger picture. This may also include time as well as larger current realities. Doing so will help to direct your creative focus along strategic lines. The inner work includes getting mentally and emotionally prepared. The outer work includes planning and organizing. Pisces (Feb 20 – Mar 20) Libra time is when you take a deep dive in your work. This depth equates to power but also to the need to work harder. Yet, for you, this should also include creativity and play. The absence of these is the clue to feelings of confusion and depression. In the bigger picture, you are destined to be advancing your position in public and professional arenas. Hopefully, you are doing just that.
