Sunshine Coast RCMP Constable Karen Whitby was recently honoured with a Commanding Officer’s Letter of Appreciation at an awards ceremony at the BC RCMP Headquarters, in recognition of Cst Whitby’s actions in saving the life of a Sechelt man last year.

During the afternoon of June 2, 2015, Cst Whitby was dispatched to check on a 56-year-old man from Sandy Hook, after neighbours became concerned when they were unable to contact him.

She and another officer were alarmed to find Angie – the man’s dog – inside without food or water. An extensive

search of the property did not turn up any clues. Hoping that the man may just be visiting a friend, the officers gave Angie some food and water, and left the residence, planning to return again the following morning.

Early that evening, just as Cst Whitby was getting ready to finish her shift, she couldn’t help thinking that maybe they had missed something. Cst Whitby followed her intuition and returned to the area of the residence again, along with Cpl Aaron Janzen and Cst Kevin Mayes. Cst Whitby planned to search several vacant lots in the area, and also let

Angie out, thinking the dog might find its owner. When Cst Whitby began searching nearby areas, a shiny quarter in the grass caught her eye. Beyond that she saw a lighter, and beyond that, a pen. Angie ran ahead of Cst Whitby and began barking at some turkey vultures and an eagle circling in the sky.

Cst Whitby ran to where the dog was and looked down to the bottom of a cliff, where she saw the missing man lying on his back. The officers quickly climbed down to the male and found him barely alive, only able to move his lips.

A doctor later told police

that he believes the man had been lying there for 36 hours, and likely would not have survived one more night if he had not been rescued. After three months of treatment the man has since returned home and was reunited with his faithful dog.

“After I left the property the first time, I had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach,” said Cst Whitby. “The feeling kept getting worse, and as I neared the end of my shift, I knew I had to go back. When I first saw the man lying there, I thought he was dead, but my devastation quickly turned to elation when we discovered he

Cops chase down cancer fundraising goal The Cops for Cancer cavalcade of cyclists has been rolling through Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast as part of a hugely successful provincewide fundraising campaign.

Each September, following months of training, more than 100 law enforcement and emergency services personnel spend up to two weeks cycling across the province and are welcomed in some 60 communities who that have organized and

pledged donations in Cops for Cancer fundraising events and activities.

Donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society through Cops for Cancer are used to fund life-saving research and caring support programs to reduce its impact. The goal this year: $410,000, which the effort hoped to reach and even exceed by the deadline of Sept.

27, they had raised more than

“That doesn’t include the close to $59,000 from the Red Serge Gala [held in Sechelt Sept. 15],” said Brooke Sherwood, one of the Canadian Cancer Society coordinators of this year’s ride. “I expect we’ll be well over our goal.”

by RCMP Constable Dustin Shevchenko, which stopped by the Sunshine Coast de-

tachment headquarters in Sechelt Sept. 22.

“Most of these cyclists are members from various police departments, including Vancouver and New Westminster” Shevchenko said.

“We’ve also got some sheriffs, a paramedic, some bylaw officers, anybody who wants to ride for the cause.”

Sometimes dogs left alone bark repeatedly out of boredom, anxiety over being left alone or in response to sounds from outside. The repetitive barking can trigger complaints from the neighbours. A voice activated recording device can help let the owner know the times and extent of the barking.

Luckily there are several

resources available to owners of dogs who are bored when left alone. Tiring a dog out both mentally and physically before being left reduces the chances of barking and other unwanted behaviors.

Scent games or trick training prior to being left helps tire a dog and help him remain quietly. There are lots of online resources like www.clickersolutions.com and a quick internet search will bring up many scent game ideas.

There are also local classes to help get an owner started teaching the dog.

There is also product available called the “Auto Trainer” which is available for purchase online and uses technology to track when a dog barks and dispenses food rewards when a dog is being quiet (no reward dispensed when the dog is barking).

This is a great reward based training device for rewarding a dog for staying calm and quiet even in the absence of the owner. Its available at http://www.petexpertise. com/dog-training-aids/autotrainer-stop-barking.html For dogs who bark at passing people and other triggers, making adjustments in the house like covering windows or moving furniture help the dog remain calm.

Enlisting the help of a neighbor who can walk the dog or utilizing the services of a professional dog walker or dog daycare to keep the dog occupied if the owner has to have a longer absence.

A note of caution: some dogs experience something called “separation distress” which is where the dog responds to being a lone with feelings of terror (it is not simply boredom). Dogs who experience separation distress need to receive behavior modification and perhaps short term medication to recover from this.

St. Hilda’s Anglican Church is having a Blessing of Pets on Sunday, October 2 at 10 am in honour and memory of the 13th century saint and reformer Francis of Assisi. All are welcome to bring their beloved pets to receive a blessing. There will also be a time to remember departed animal friends.

St. Hilda’s has been offering a service for the Blessing of Pets around St. Francistide for many years. Pet owners are asked to keep all cats and critters in safe travel containers and dogs on leash, and make sure all animals are fully vaccinated. Stuffed toys are welcome too.

The Blessing of Animals Service kicks off the Season of Creation at St. Hilda’s, a 6-week-long celebration of various aspects of God’s creation: Harvest Thanksgiving (Oct. 9), Ocean Sunday (Oct. 16), Flora and Fauna Sunday (Oct. 23), Storm Sunday (Oct. 30) and Cosmo Sunday (Nov. 6).

A grizzly bear in West Sechelt

Conservation officers were hunting for a grizzly bear in West Sechelt this week, and elementary school students were warned to stay in groups and avoid wooded areas.

A black bear had been killed by what is believed to be the same grizzly, and conservation officers placed a trap near the black bear carcass in the hopes that the grizzly returned for it.

A grizzly was videotaped last week at a home on McLaughlan Rd., where it was eating fallen fruit and ignoring a barking dog.

Students at West Sechelt Elementary were sent home with a note Sept. 26 explaining that some outdoor activities were being cancelled until the bear was trapped.

“It is important that they stay together in groups, as well as not walk in any wooded areas, in particular areas with gullies and culverts,” the note said.

And WildSafeBC issued a statement asking residents to manage bear attractants on their properties: • Pick ripe/fallen fruit daily, or arrange for volunteers to pick. Email fruittreeproject@ onestraw.ca or call 604-9892853.

Editorial Opinion Will our salmon survive?

Salmon have been swimming in Pacific Northwest waters for at least seven million years, as indicated by fossils of large sabertooth salmon found in the area.

But something is happening to Pacific coast salmon. This year, BC’s sockeye salmon run was the lowest in recorded history. Commercial and First Nations fisheries on the world’s biggest sockeye run on BC’s longest river, the Fraser, closed. Fewer than 900,000 sockeye out of a projected 2.2 million returned to the Fraser to spawn. Areas once teeming with salmon are all but empty.

Salmon migrations, stretching up to 3,000 kilometres, are among the world’s most awe-inspiring. After spending adult lives in the ocean, salmon make the arduous trip up rivers against the current, returning to spawn and die where they hatched. Only one out of every thousand salmon manages to survive and return to its freshwater birthplace.

So what’s going wrong? Climate change is amplifying a long list of stressors salmon already face. Sockeye salmon are sensitive to temperature changes, so higher ocean and river temperatures can have serious impacts. Even small degrees of warming can kill them.

Beyond creating poor environmental conditions for salmon, climate change increases disease risks. Warm conditions have led to sea lice outbreaks in farmed and wild salmon, and a heart and muscle inflammatory disease has been found in at least one farm. Scientists researching salmon movement through areas with farms are finding wild fish, especially young ones, with elevated parasite levels. Diseases that cause even slight deficiencies in swimming speed or feeding ability could make these marathon swimmers easy prey.

Disappearing salmon don’t just affect humans but all coastal ecosystems and wildlife. Eighty-two endangered southern resident killer whales depend on chinook salmon to survive. As chinook stocks go down, the likelihood that these whales could become extinct goes up.

Although the federal government has committed to implement recommendations from Justice Bruce Cohen’s inquiry into Fraser River sockeye and to follow the Wild Salmon Policy, reversing this dire situation will take widespread concerted and immediate action. A weak provincial climate plan that fails to meet emissions targets and acceptance of new ocean-based fish farm applications won’t help wild salmon. We need to move fish farms out of the water and onto land.

Salmon are resilient and have survived ice ages and other challenges over millions of years. The question is, can they — and the ecosystems that depend on them — survive climate change and fish farms and all the other stressors humans are putting on them?

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Tree math The loss of another important intact forest on the Elphinstone slopes is very troubling, and the tiny economic contribution that timber revenues will provide to the Province is equally shocking. The stumpage fees from this timber sale of approx. 23Ha of old growth forest paid to the Province is a paltry $1.3Million. Equivalent of an East Vancouver 30' x 60' property. Are residents getting enough value from these low-elevation, high-use forests?

The locally-based Peninsula Logging may pocket several hundred thousand themselves; however what investment did this logging company put into the development of the product that they're benefiting from?

Zero. A typical business has to invest in the development of the product upfront, and may not expect a return on investment for two to five years. In this logging extraction model, all one needs to do is lease equipment and in a few months of work big bucks are realized on the back of nature's growth process. When there's quick, easy money to be made, contractors get greedy, and when confronted by angry residents that they're about to destroy an important local ecosystem that's part of their community values and connection, not to mention that their own Regional District is opposed to it, they just stare back with blank expressions without answering back to the greater community.

It’s now accepted in the economic world to place a dollar value on our natural assets. The value that intact forests provide is $10,000 per Ha per year in a range of environmental services in such things as carbon sequestering. The tear down of this 'Twist & Shout For-

est' will reduce the value of this land to 0 dollars. Any economic activity at this site won't be for another approx. 80 years, whereas, every year in its intact state would generate $230,000 in services, including playing a role in the mountain biking draw to the lower Sunshine Coast.

The Elphinstone Forests could still be an important protected area for the future, if proper accounting of natural assets is applied, and if human greed steps aside.

Development math (Re editorial “Property and other values”, the Local, Sept. 15) You're right, not in my backyard and not in yours either. All builders and developers, big ones, small ones, rich ones and poor ones alike, have bylaws, OCP's, set-backs, square footage rules, height limits, parking requirements and more, that they must respect in order to build. They are in place to ensure that what gets built is safe, workable and in keeping with what the community wants.

They also ensure that every developer is working from the same rule book and everyone is equal.

If what is being proposed

by Gibsons and the Affordable Housing Group is good enough, safe enough and supported by the community enough then bring these new rules on for everyone.

Smaller setbacks, reduced parking, more square footage relative to lot size, possible reduced engineering requirements etc. will go a long way, likely a lot further than these four or five proposed homes, towards making all housing more affordable everywhere.

If we can do it for one group we should do it for all

groups. We have rules that are meant to protect everyone, which includes me and my neighbors. If these rules are needed and necessary then apply them to all. Don't give special favors. Anyone rich or poor should develop within the existing guidelines. Otherwise you end up with a never-ending cycle of spot zoning and divisiveness.

Explore options With the provinciallymandated option for Senior's Care capacity on the Lower Sunshine Coast meeting stiff resistance, we have the opportunity to look at alternatives.

Health care operated within a registered nonprofit Society is an option where we could embrace senior care. A new and larger facility could be built and operated on a not-for-profit basis. Clearly, the profit factor is right at the root of this problem.

With wide community and local government acceptance and support, we could obtain a long lasting, trusting relationship, providing the care we would want for our seniors that met our standards; not those of a distant and un-inclusive authority.

It is never too late to explore new options.

Bearing in mind that you conceded at the Sept. 12 public meeting the fact that there had been no consultation with the Community before the meeting and in view of the Mayor’s comments that he and other public officials had not been

approached prior to the announcement to close Totem and Shorncliffe, we are therefore requesting that this whole process be put on hold until an in depth study and all alternatives are explored, and that this time the community be involved.

Our Community will never accept the closure of these two facilities unless they can be convinced that there is no other alternative.

For animals Bill C-246, the Modernizing Animal Protections Act, is a private members bill submitted to Parliament to improve anti-cruelty laws in Canada. If passed, this will be the first substantive change to Canada's animal protection laws in over a decade. That's a very long time.

It upsets many people who care about animals to see someone who has abused animals go to court only to get a slap on the wrist.

If you care about animals and feel it's long overdue to have laws to protect them, simply go to animalalliance. ca and vote yes. It's that simple.

Will unique garden be saved?

A special swath of Sechelt horticulture could disappear if a proposed oceanfront condo development is approved, but efforts are underway to save it.

The Northwest Plant Habitat Demonstration Garden has occupied a several square-metre public space on Shorncliffe Avenue since 2003, when the District partnered with the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society to clean up and tend the plot. It is now home to dozens of plant species.

But developer RTC Properties Ltd. has applied to construct a 48-unit oceanfront condo development across Shorncliffe Avenue from the garden. The developer’s plans include widening the road as a right-ofway to the complex, which could mean wiping out the garden project.

“We were surprised to

discover that no consideration appears to have been given to the impact on this long-established treasure,” Botanical Garden Manager Mary Blockberger wrote in a Sept. 13 letter to Council.

“Over 50 different species now grow there, including such great rarities as the double-flowered Salmonberry and, in spring, a lovely drift of Coastal wildflowers: fawn lilies, chocolate lilies, trilliums, blue camass, harvest brodiaea,” along with the “coveted Himalayan Blue Poppy.”

Blockberger added that information on the garden is featured at Sechelt Visitor Centre, and the project is now “recognized as a tourist attraction.”

Attention was called to Blockberger’s letter at the Sept. 21 Council meeting, where Mayor Bruce Milne asked Director of Planning

Andre Isakov if the matter could be forwarded to the developer so, “they can take this into consideration.”

Isakov replied that it had been his understanding that, “it was a temporary garden until such time the road can be built,” but that District planners would take the “feedback and direction from Council” into account. He added that RTC Properties was being “very cooperative” regarding preservation of a number of “significant trees” at the building site, which might suggest that similar cooperation could extend to the garden.

Milne then noted that “not every road right-of-way needs to be built right to the edge.”

A public hearing date has not yet been set for the seaside residential project.

Street parking eliminated on Gibsons road A group of Gibsons residents feels they’ve been “slammed” after losing the on-street parking in front of their homes in favour of bicycle lanes.

At its September 20 meeting, Town Council approved the creation of two bike lanes on most of Shaw Road, eliminating street parking for about 40 homes.

About a half-dozen residents who attended the meeting said they had been informed very late or not at all about a survey the town had conducted on the issue.

“I do question the validity of this survey,” said Shaw Road homeowner Jackie Ostrosky.

“We received it at our door and when I went online that night.

The next day was the (Sept. 6) due date.”

Ostroski said she was one of the few she knows who were even aware of the survey.

“My neighbours certainly didn’t know,” she said. “I thought there would be a public meeting that we would all know about.”

The online survey received 111 responses. It was conducted among all Town residents because Shaw Road is designated as a primary cycling and walking route in the Official Community Plan, according to Councillor Jeremy Valeriote, who was chairing the council meeting in Mayor Wayne Rowe’s absence. Valeriote added that the bike lanes would help further connect Shaw Road to Inglis Trail and Lower Gibsons.

Survey responses were received from 36 people who

said they were either Shaw Road residents or visited family or friends on the street.

The overall survey results suggested that 40 per cent felt parking on Shaw Road was either very important or moderately important, but 55 per cent supported the plan to eliminate on-street parking there to create designated bike lanes.

A few residents at the meeting asked why the Town couldn’t create just one bike lane, but Director of Engineering Dave Newman said the road isn’t sufficiently wide.

“There is enough room for one lane of parking and two driving lanes, or two bike lanes and two driving lanes. There is not enough room for one bike lane and one lane of parking,”

Newman said.

Ostrosky told Council, “I think we’re really getting slammed here. There are hardly any bikes on Shaw Road.

There are more deer walking up and down the road than there are bikes.”

Valeriote said it might be that, “it’s not heavily used by bikes right now because it’s not [yet] friendly to bikes.”

Shaw Road resident Reana Nestman said she and all her neighbours would take a financial hit. “Now our house values have just gone downhill, and who’s going to be responsible for that?” Nestman asked.

Little did Julia Mackey know when she created the mask of an old man in a character building workshop in 2002, that it was the beginning of a remarkable journey that would last decades. In her one woman show, Jake’s Gift, Mackey easily transitions between portraying Jake, an 80-year-old Canadian veteran of the D-Day campaign, and Isabelle, a precocious 10-yearold French girl he meets at the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery. “I can’t believe we’re about to start our 10th anniversary with this show,” says Mackey of the tour’s opener on September 30th in Roberts Creek. The story centres around Jake’s return to Normandy to find his brother’s grave and the gift of friendship that blossoms between him and Isabelle.

Interested in World War II history, particularly in the Normandy landings, Mackey

attended the 60th Anniversary of D-Day in 2004, travelling to Juno Beach and interviewing the many veterans who had gathered there. She learned of the Westlake Brothers, three brothers who had all died within days of each other during and after the invasion.

She observed French school children interacting with the veterans, and piece by piece, the story of Jake’s Gift came together and has been touring since January 2007. She’s performed the play in over 215 communities across Canada and even performed it in French at Juno Beach as part of the 70th D-Day Anniversary celebrations. “It was an incredible experience,” says Mackey.

“I was so nervous and it was so emotional. It was like a dream come true to go back there and perform this story that the people there had inspired.”

Everywhere Mackey has toured has led to rave reviews.

Broadcast journalist Shelagh Rogers gave voice to Indigenous Peoples on her CBC Radio program “Sounds Like Canada” in a series called “Our Home and Native Land”.

She was invited to become an Honorary Witness to the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission where residential school survivors spoke the truth in their own voices and, ultimately, changed Canada.

Rogers’ talk is the annual

Clifford Smith Memorial Lecture presented by the Sunshine Coast ElderCollege in partnership with the Festival of the Written Arts and sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union. Rogers’ talk is titled, “I Hear Voices: Reflections on Being an Honorary Witness for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.”

It takes place Saturday, Oct. 1, 2-4pm at the Rockwood Centre in Sechelt and is free.
