Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Woodfibre LNG Project Open House and Invitation to Comment Woodfibre LNG Limited (Proponent) is proposing to develop and operate the Woodfibre LNG Project (proposed Project), a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, storage and marine carrier transfer facility for the export of LNG. The proposed Project will be located approximately 7 kilometres southwest of Squamish, British Columbia. The proposed Project would export approximately 2.1 million metric tonnes per annum of LNG. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and is also undergoing a substituted environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project.

However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements.

Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of Valued Components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. This is done through the Valued Component Selection Document which EAO has now received and invites comments on.

The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment.

After taking public comments into account, EAO will finalize the Application Information Requirements and issue them to the Proponent.

Members of the Canadian Federation of University Women’s Sunshine Coast chapter gathered for their annual Mad Hatters Tea Party at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club in Roberts Creek on Monday, June 9. The group, which funds annual bursaries forJune 12, 2014 mature women returning to school to further their careers, believes in having fun while raising funds.

At the party, members sipped tea and enjoyed those typical teatime treats, crustless cucumber sandwiches while admiring the headgear on display.

Invasive fruit fly now on Coast S

potted Wing Drosophila is a fruit fly new to the Sunshine Coast region. It lays its eggs while the fruit is forming, causing it to rot before it can be harvested.

This invasive fruit fly attacks more than once per season and poses a real threat to area food crops. To help area gardeners and farmers understand this pest and its control, Sunshine Coast Regional District is sponsoring a workshop at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden (the

Bot) on Tuesday, June 17 at 7 p.m. Master Gardener Jo Canning will explain the nature of this threat to fruit and berry crops.

The Bot offers advice to gardeners on a variety of topics. Its workshop on Wednesday, June 18, will explain how to extend the harvest season into November and intermittently until spring. Instructor Harry Hill will discuss crops and planting times, starting at 7 p.m. Admis-

sion is by donation (suggested: $10 per person).

The Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden, located at 5941 Mason Road in Sechelt, is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Wednesday (closed Thursday). Generously supported by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, it welcomes visitors and new members.

St. Mary’s Hospital heliport re-opens

H

elicopters are once again landing at Vancouver Coastal Health’s (VCH) St. Mary’s Hospital; its upgraded heliport reopened on June 9, 2014.

With Transport Canada’s recent inspection and approval of the $175,000 in upgrades funded by the provincial government, the heliport will transport patients for a range of critical-care needs.

“VCH worked closely with Transport Canada, the provincial government and the Sechelt Indian Band to ensure the heliport would meet the required standards and be up and running as soon as possible,” said Lauren Tindall, Director,

Sunshine Coast. “In the interim, we were fortunate to have the use of the heliport at the nearby Sechelt Airport, so that patient care was not affected.”

The heliport has been closed since 2010 due to the renovation and reconstruction of St. Mary’s Hospital, as well as Transport Canada compliance issues around traffic control design. Upgrades to the heliport included the removal of trees along the flight path, which crosses Sechelt Indian Band land, and the installation of traffic control measures along the road surrounding the heliport to ensure pedestrian safety.

St. Mary’s staff and visitors will be required to follow new traffic control measures when a helicopter is landing or taking off. These new measures will include flashing lights and a traffic/pedestrian barricade that is designed to protect those on the ground as well as those in the helicopter.

“We want to thank the public for their patience,” Tindall said. “We needed to make sure the work was complete and up to Transport Canada’s standards. I think the wait has worth it.”

Since 2011, close to 350 St. Mary’s Hospital patients have been safely transported via helicopter.

Editorial Opinion How will you know?

The Town of Gibsons’ recent Boil Water Advisory – the first ever for the municipality – came with a steep learning curve. The Town’s staff knew how to deal with contaminants in its drinking water delivery system, which it tests weekly.

But apparently the protocols for informing residents of the developing situation, developed by Vancouver Coastal Health and followed by local governments in the region, were not far-reaching or fast enough.

Staff alerted media of breaking news before sending out a bulletin from Mayor Wayne Rowe and emailed notification to residents who subscribed to its newsletter list; the Town and all media outlets then posted the information to their websites and Facebook pages, tweeted it to the Twitterverse, and shared it generously throughout social media. Those who subscribe to the Town’s alerts or set up their smart phones to of emails, Facebook postings and Tweets received the information virtually instantaneously.

Predictably, those who rely on other means to get their news, received the information later and less reliably – usually by word of mouth from a friend or neighbour. In some cases, days passed before residents received the information of the hazard and the advisory.

Accordingly, the Town is now reviewing its protocols for situations like this, and the procedures will be shared with the SCRD, District of Sechelt and shíshálh Nation for their information. It has been a learning experience.

Among those who should be learning are the residents themselves. How do you get your news?

One resident posted on Facebook that she pretty much expected Town staff to go door to door in the community – to all 1,200 affected residences – and notify each householder.

This is neither economic nor realistic when that staff should be out searching for the source of contamination or working on cleaning the distribution system.

In the end, no matter what methods are chosen to get the word out of a contaminated water supply – and yes, that is news that should be delivered virtually as it happens – it will not be 100 per cent effective. And no matter what methods are chosen, this whole episode shows that residents must take responsibility for ensuring they can be reached with information when an emergency situation occurs.

That means: listen to local radio and news broadcasts; sign up for municipal newsletters and e-broadcasts; “like” Facebook pages for media and municipalities so their posts enter your personal news feed; and for those of our readers who shun electronic devices (including cell phones) plan to pick up mail daily, and make a point of checking news sites and bulletin boards for posts that might be of urgent interest.

In the end, all the media in the world can’t inform those who choose not to be informed.

Woodfibre LNG has just announced it’s second round of public info sessions, all taking place in the Sea to Sky corridor. Four information meetings at Squamish, one at Whistler, and one at Furry Creek.

The Sunshine Coast was not included on the last go round of information to the public, and now again. This is outrageous!!

Your website (http:// www.woodfibrelng.ca/theproject/project-overviewdocument/) states “Woodfibre LNG will undertake thorough and meaningful consultation with local government, communities and other stakeholders throughout the development of the Woodfibre LNG Project.

This commitment means that we strive to engage a

thorough understanding of the project and to obtain local input into key features during planning and development.”

These statements are meaningless unless you follow through. We, residents of the Sunshine Coast, will be directly affected by the activities at the proposed Woodfibre LNG site. We will experience all the concerns around disturbance to the environment on land, and water in the Howe Sound area. We will be affected by huge LNG tankers causing any interruption to BC Ferry schedules, marine transport, fishing, and pleasure craft enjoyment, plus island cottage marine travel back and forth to mainland.

Why is the Sunshine Coast purposely being ignored in this information session for the public?

Weston weighs in Constituents have recently expressed concerns about the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project. The ongoing national conversation about large-scale energy projects is broader than the proposed Project. The conversation must anticipate other projects that need to be considered in the near future, including Kinder Morgan, LNG projects, and others. The decisions we Canadians make now will open doors, create opportunities, and shape Canada for generations.

During an extensive review process, the independent Joint Review Panel heard from over 1,450 participants in 21 different communities, reviewed over 175,000 pages of evidence, and received 9,000 letters of comment, after which the

Panel concluded the Project would be in the “Canadian public interest,” provided it was “constructed and operated in full compliance” with the 209 stringent conditions the Panel required.

This includes an Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan that “must demonstrate Northern Gateway’s ability to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the potential effects of emergencies of any type and in any geographic region or season.” Our Government can now accept the Panel’s recommendations, or turn down the proposal altogether.

No project will be approved unless it is safe for Canadians and safe for the environment. For our Conservative Government’s record of commitment to that principle, one need look no further than our recent decision with respect to the Taseko Mine Project in Northern B.C. This was an ambitious proposal that would have created thousands of jobs and significant economic stimulus. Our Government did not allow it to proceed, after a rigorous, science-based environmental review by an independent panel concluded that the project would result in significant adverse environmental effects that could not be mitigated.

This Government is serious about ensuring that resources are transported safely, not just with respect to future energy projects, but also with respect to resources transported by the many pipelines and tankers operating in British Columbia today. That is why we have recently taken steps to develop a world-class marine tanker safety system and

further enhance Canada’s world-class pipeline safety system.

In my own role as MP, I have consistently advocated for a sustainable approach to the environment and fisheries. I have pursued this goal in Parliament, at the Howe Sound Community Forum, at the Sea-to-Sky Fisheries Roundtable constituents and I created, and in regular interactions with constituents.

I would support an energy project that delivers jobs and opens markets for Canadian energy exports, but only under stringent conditions that reflect the kind of principles expressed above. Looking to the expertise of the Joint Review Panel on the matter, I know this Government will seek a resolution which is in the overall best interest of our country.

n recent weeks, I’ve written about our Town’s budget, and about several important infrastructure projects your municipal leaders will be investing in on your behalf. I have also mentioned a growing ‘parking lot’ of projects and initiatives in which we would like to invest, and at this time, cannot afford to do.

Economic development will be a critical success factor in our ability to address these needs. I have some good news for you on that front, and several facts and figures to share with you to help set an economic context.

Here on the Coast, we benchmark our realities and our progress against 14 other regional districts, from the Cowichan Valley to East Kootenay. Among those districts, perhaps unsurprisingly we rank favourably in many categories: we are among the highest in median age and in the percentage of our residents aged 25 to 64 with post-

Lyme Disease Awareness Forum set for June 22 Tick, tick, tick – Lyme disease can be a time bomb

I

n response to concerns by area residents, the Sunshine Coast’s first Lyme Disease Awareness Forum will examine causes, control and preventive measures on Sunday, June 22 at the Sechelt Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, 5591 Wharf Street from 2 - 4 p.m.

Guest speakers Gwen Barlee, Policy Director for The Wilderness Committee in Vancouver, and Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation Director David Cubbereley will offer advice and expertise.

Lyme Disease is caused by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks – tiny insects that range in size from poppy seed to pea (depending on their age and whether it has fed recently). Found in forested and overgrown areas, the expanding population of ticks appears to be moving into more settled surroundings.

Symptoms can vary from person to person with varying degrees of severity; some people may have no symptoms at all, others may not experience them until weeks after the bite.

This makes Lyme Disease difficult to diagnose, but early diagnosis is key to successful treatment. Anyone bitten by a tick should

ultiple Chemical Sensitivity-Chemical Injury (MCS) is a chronic condition caused by one toxic event or an accumulation of a number of toxic triggers. MCS brings life almost to a halt; the ability to do even the most mundane and normal everyday things become challenging, and sufferers cannot socialize, go to concerts, movies, events, luncheons, church, dinners, the homes of others, invite people into their own homes, most cannot fly or travel on public transport. Even hugging becomes dangerous! While hundreds of products are toxic, the unregulated synthetic fragrances in perfume, laundry and body products are the ones that prevent people with chemical injury from living normal lives the most.

With each toxic encounter and subsequent severe illness, unseen internal damage is slowly being done.

When ill from such encounters, people with MCS hide away, eventually re-emerging seemingly normal, physically and emotionally, so it is difficult for others to really understand what this illness

is: that their body’s ability to break down further toxins is gone, so additional exposures cause more injury and worsening reactions.

MCS is designated as an official disability under the Human Rights Act and should be accorded all such rights wherever possible.

However this is rarely done or understood, and most with MCS sufferers do not have the energy or wellness to fight for their own rights.

Chemical injury is increasingly prevalent in today’s society, with an estimated 10 per cent of the world’s population now suffering. There are studies and increasing suspicion that growing childhood conditions stem in varying degrees from the overload of toxic chemicals in our lives.

These beliefs have yet to be empirically proven, but the evidence is growing.

Buying and using fragrance-free products helps send a message to corporations and can be a first step to making the world a safer place for yourself, your children, your pets, as well as those living with MCS. Submitted by Valerie Pusey

Sechelt Farmers’ Market

In partnership with the Get Local BC initiative (www.getlocalbc.org), farmers markets and farmgate operations are promoting the benefits of eating locally. The website offers a guide to seasonal produce and links to markets that provide it, plus a wealth of information on ‘getting local.’ The campaign, called ‘Prepare to Meet Your Maker,’ is drawing interest and customers to Vancouver area markets and BC farmgate operations.

The average North American meal travels 2,400 km to get from field to plate and contains ingredients from five countries in addition to our own – that’s a lot of what Britain’s ‘SUSTAIN’ organization terms “food miles.” In the past 20

years in North America, the import and export of food have tripled with agriculture and food now accounting for more than a quarter of the goods transported on our roads. Food is now also the largest component of airfreight, the most polluting form of transportation.

Local produce on sale at local farmers markets or farmgates is the freshest produce one can buy. It is picked when it is fully ripe and delivered to you quicker – usually on the same day it was picked – than produce imported from another province, country, or continent. Imported produce is picked weeks before it is ripe, and often, the nutrients, taste, texture, and colour have not fully developed, which can result in

the produce being gassed to create a pleasing, healthy appearance to the consumer.

Choosing local food also contributes to the health of our community economy and helps local farms stay in business. When we buy a local food product in the supermarket, the producer receives a higher percentage of our food dollar (and at a farmers’ market or onfarm store, 100 per cent!)

This money stays in the community to grow the community.

The very soil that food is grown on is vital to BC’s agricultural economy. Eating locally grown food supports our farmers and protects our precious farmland by keeping it in production. We need to protect our farmland and we need to ‘grow’

farmers to ensure the security of our food supply. In British Columbia, the median age of a farmer in 2007 was 57 years. This means that many farmers are set to retire in the near future and viable opportunities are needed to engage the next generation into succession.

It is crucial that market demand for locally grown food is strong enough to encourage a new crop of farmers and that they are able to confidently grow for the domestic market.

In the coming weeks, The Local Weekly will be featuring a series of articles on local farms and farmers, highlighting seasonal food and favourite recipes. Prepare to Meet Your Maker.

Start planning for Tickets still available for International Choral Fest Sandcastle Competition P Organizers of the annual Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition expect hot and heavy action at this year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, July 12. Teams and individuals should start planning their entry now and practicing on the beach – constructing a successful sand sculpture is more complicated than it looks, and entrants have just three hours to finish their project.

In 2013, 21 groups participated, building everything from traditional sandcastles, huge turtles, giant squid taking ships

down, realistic running shoes and many other creative constructions.

Following the judging, talented local musicians will provide an afternoon of entertainment under the trees in beautiful Mission Point Park (adjacent to the beach).

Volunteers are needed to help make this fun summer event a resounding success by donating an hour or so of their time to help with setup, teardown, registration and judging.

Sechelt Library salutes Brothers in Farms follow Passion Seaweeds in June with Patience in new CD

Audiences give Quest standing ovations World premiere for The Quest in Pender Harbour as full-length musical debuts

S

ay the word ‘seaweed’ and either sushi or green beach debris comes to mind. But when artist Lorena Pelly walks the beach, she sees the beauty of nature in a rainbow of colours unnoticed by the casual passerby. Lorena carefully collects, washes, dries and presses the seaweed and then arranges the pieces into lyrical and flowing abstract works or art designed to “reflect the diversity, energy and mystery of the ever-changing sea.”

In 2013, visiting Danish author Ole Mouritsen, who shared Lorena’s interest in seaweed, saw one of Lorena’s artworks and arranged to view more of her work. During his Sechelt visit, Ole and Lorena scoured the beaches for samples, discussing how their mutual interest developed and how Ole’s seaweed fascination led to his writing two books on this marine plant. A copy of Mouritsen’s book, Seaweeds: Edible, Available & Sustainable (University of Chicago Press)

Lorena notes, “Visitors as well as those who reside here on the Coast, are blessed with the close proximity of the varied riches of the sea.

By making Mouritsen’s book available to visitors and members, the Sechelt Library is proactively responding to increased public awareness and appreciation of an ever changing environment and offers library users an opportunity to gain access to fascinating information that authors such as Mouritsen present.”

During June, the Sechelt Library will have to view an example of Lorena’s art and Mouritsen’s book on display; the book will be available to borrow after the exhibition. early one year after releasing their debut album, Book I: Passion, the collective of musicians that comprise ‘Brothers in Farms’ are more than ready to put out something new. “We had a great break over the winter and all spent some valuable time evolving as musicians,” says singer Chris Hergesheimer. “The process – the writing and the recording – was a more of a band effort. We came at it with some new energy and new influences, holed up at the farmhouse, and hit record. The result is our latest album, Book II: Patience. It’s raw and real, but most of all it’s danceable – a great representation of our energy and our

strength.” Co-produced by the Brothers and Steve Weave from The Sound in Sechelt, Book II promises to be a great second part in the evolving trilogy.

Growing from their roots planted while playing around the firepit in a ‘glass teepee’, the Brothers’ evolving West Coast, upbeat style mashed up with world sounds and a unique stage presence uplifts and wows crowds at festivals, clubs and private functions with a high energy mix of roots, reggae, Balkan, hip hop and funk with a Latin rhythmic backdrop.

The Quest, a full-length musical by composer/ lyricist, producer/director, and performer Kenneth Norman Johnson received emotional and prolonged standing ovations from audiences at its world premiere performances June 5 and 6 in the Pender Harbour School of Music.

Fourteen exceptional singers from up and down the Sunshine Coast performed the highly complex and vocally challenging score which explores the moral and ethical choices presented by the modern world.

In addition to the stunning music, the audience was impressed by the highly imaginative staging that transformed the Music School into a small offBroadway theatre. The acting was also superb. Given the resounding success of the debut performances, Kenneth Johnson hopes to take his talented cast and crew to other venues in the coming months.

Revenue from this first production of The Quest was generously donated to the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society for use in projects such as the placement of heritage signage around the Harbour, restoration of Sarah Wray Hall - a one room schoolhouse in Garden Bay, and the annual April Tools festival which nurtures interest in traditional wooden boat building.

Harding selected for Team Canada Sharp kids capture fencing medals Top-ranked marksman headed for XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

ibsons resident Allan Harding has been selected to compete at the 2014 XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland this summer. This will be the first Commonwealth Games event and the first time to the UK for the marksman,

who has been climbing the ranks in pistol shooting since his return to the sport in 2007. A provincial champion, Harding is the number one ranked 10m shooter in Canada.
