rs. Allena (Lee) Redman was driving her scooter to Pharmasave last week. As she tried to cross at the corner of Cowrie and Inlet, her scooter tipped over and she was thrown to the pavement. People quickly ran to lend a hand and the paramedics were there in no time to help out. She suffered many abrasions and was very shaken up.
Lee was rushed to the hospital and bandaged up. The kind staff at St. Mary’s sent her home in the good hands her son and daughter-in-law. Two days after her accident, Lee was back out on her scooter and headed straight to The Local office to inquire about taking out an ad to thank all the kind strangers that had helped her that day. No ad was necessary, as Lee and those who helped her represented a story that needed to be told. The outpouring of help and kindness for this elder was very encouraging. This truly demonstrated that although the Sunshine Coast has grown, the community spirit and respect

Editorial Opinion
A simple approach to life
P
eople of all ages have recently been saying that instead of life becoming simpler, they find things growing more complex. A plethora of diverse scenarios has culminated in creating this increased level of personal activity. It is slowly affecting people’s ability to find the time they need to spend with their loved ones. Instead of taking more walks on the beach, people are answering more phone calls. Instead of spending more time reading novels, people are checking their Facebook page to see who liked their most recent post. In the not-so-distant past, life felt simpler and there were more of those moments when people just couldn’t reach you. For example, time spent on the open road provided people with the time to do a little self-reflection and contemplation. Nowadays, time spent on the road is often setaside to Bluetooth your cell phone to the car and complete some unfinished business. Further, recent studies have reported that employees are working 10 to 15 per cent more because employers know they can reach them in the evenings and on weekends. Don’t get down though; there are many upsides to these increased levels of communication. There have been major improvements in safety and security. Organizations can run smoother and clients can be served more efficiently. But, there is a point when this new connectedness removes the precious moments, which should be reserved for rest and relaxation. In fact, it has been proven that the body needs time to relax. Taking some time out to meditate, do some yoga, or even just listen to music, can give the body the boost it needs to feel better all day long. Life has a different meaning for each person, but creating a balance of efficiency and simplicity can increase their ability to be happier. In no way should people stop doing things that enrich their life, but taking time to identify things that are important and leave behind things that are not important, may be the most beneficial thing you can do this fall. Bottom-line, it is time to eliminate the eschewing chaos and replace it with some simplicity. Terminate the clutter and invite some peace and quiet into your routine. It will inevitably allow you to spend more time doing the things you love, with the people you love. Jim Dorey, Editor
Letters to the Editor Open letter to Sechelt Senior Activity Centre members It has been almost three months since the pool room was closed at the Centre. If you read the President’s message, you would likely have been led to believe that the pool players are just an unruly, defiant bunch. But here’s my perspective. It was said “Pool Players don’t pay”. The financial report in June stated that the revenue intake was in excess of 60% per cent above the projected revenue. The alleged problem may have been a rare occurrence. Closing the room is not the answer. If Translink shut down
the Skytrain because of fare evasion, honest citizens would have been deprived. Furthermore, different fee structures were proposed by members to solve the alleged problem but were not even given a chance. It was also said that pool players were seen to be drinking and smoking in the games room. I am a regular player and I have never seen anyone doing that. I guess those who took part would know better. In any case, why didn’t the Board enforce the policy instead of closing the room? It was also said that the room could generate more revenue, if rented out as a meeting facility. Although it
Letters to the Editor – Opinions is not a very popular game, this activity was approved by the members as a budgeted regular program at an AGM and has been for many years. What is the hurry to disband the service mid-year. Why give away a very nice pool table, deny a request to take this to a general meeting and do the renovations without any budget allocations? Some of us have since found alternate facilities to play the game but unfortunately some did not, and will have to survive without such enjoyment. Steve Lee, Sechelt
Value of the forest
I just read Ms. Penny Allport’s eloquent letter in the September 6 issue of The Local, and I feel obliged to write and express my strong support for her arguments in favour of preserving the Wilson Creek Forest. It’s clear to me that protecting this small patch of old, uncut forest is in the best interest of the citizens of our Coast. Clearly, it would not be in their intereststo allow a logging company to come in and chop it down. Her letter expressed concern that the Sunshine Coast Community Forest Corporation (SCCF) is using its own impact assessment on downstream fishing to convince the Sechelt District Council (SDC) to grant it a permit to log this forest. That assessment, in my opinion, is irrelevant. This is not about protecting fish – it’s about
protecting the forest itself. The wishes and priorities of the SCCF, whose raison d’être is to cut down forests, should not be the concern of the SDC. No doubt, the company has a valuable role to play in our society. But the value of this particular forest to the people of Sechelt District is far greater than the value of whatever lumber the SCCF might extract from it. As more and more of our old forests are gone forever, it has become more urgent to protect the one or two that remain – particularly this one, which is so close to our communities. Mr. Mayor, I urge you and your councillors, in your wisdom and courage, to override the SCCF’s request in this case and let them know that the people of Sechelt District will not permit any logging on the Wilson Creek Forest. Bob O’Neill, Roberts Creek
Another Great Event
For a number of years my husband and I kept saying we would attend the Lehigh open house. Finally last Saturday we went. Kudos to all who worked hard to put this event on. The tour was extremely interesting, the food was great and the people working there made the day a very pleasant experience. It is the efforts of good companies like this that make our community a wonderful place to live. Thanks to all who were involved, it was very much appreciated and enjoyed.
Skin blossoms on show
T
he Sunshine Coast Arts Council invites you to see Gibsons resident Marilyn Marshall’s recent paintings on canvas and paper in a show called Joie de Vivre: The Surreal Edge The opening is being held between 7 – 9 p.m. on September 19, at the Sechelt Arts Centre located in Sechelt on Medusa Street. Joie de Vivre is a show about organic nature at its liveliest. The paintings on canvas are of budding and
burgeoning plants, ageing trees, languishing vegetables, people dancing, embracing, giving birth. But they are works of imagination, often surreal in ambiguous contexts, looming from the canvas, or sharing attributes of multiple organisms. Contrasting these paintings are several smaller abstract paintings in acrylic and ink on paper; often minutely detailed, suggesting microscopic biological cross-sections. In a few works on paper the macro and micro views are there simultaneously, as in a dancing couple with innards and skin blossoms on show. The surreal impulse of this work is often abetted by letting the painting ensue from hand-pressed mono-prints. The show will continue from September 19 through October 7. For the love of movies!
S
o many super heroes in movies these days – and anti heroes, mythic heroes, even reluctant heroes. What about the real ones? The film The Lady, deftly tells the story of Nobel Peace prize-winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her fight for the freedom of Burma. Michelle Yeoh is striking in her performance and director Luc Besson again shows his love of strong female characters. I particularly appreciated the
portrayal of her husband and sons who sacrificed mightily in their support of her cause. Suu fought for Burma – they fought for her, enduring years of separation as she was kept under house arrest. Many anonymous cameramen provided beautiful footage from inside Burma from which the actual film crews were banned. The Lady is rated PG and although shows some violence, is recommended for families as an inspirational historical lesson about a living hero devoted to peace.

Gibsons’ waterfront hotel plans now unveiled
(Continued from front page) The location was revealed but it was no surprise to most that the plan was to drop the new hotel and condos around the area where the current fuel docks are located. Klaus Fuerniss, the hotel proprietor has over three decades of executive experience in the hospitality, tourism and convention industries including the successful startup for both the Winnipeg’s and Vancouver’s Trade and Convention Centres. He stood up to the podium and spoke to the open house attendees saying, “The George Hotel will represent a major economic catalyst for the Town of Gibsons. It will help diversify and stabilize the Gibsons economy by adding an estimated 130 full time jobs at build out, over 245 man years of construction employment, over one million dollars in annual tax revenue and approximately 7.9 million dollars in annual conference and tourism spending.” Several people in attendance did like the fact that Klaus had said for people to “ask questions and let us know what you think,” but were then slightly disap-
pointed that the development team did not provide a formal question and answer period. This was an open house where the information was flowing in one direction. Klaus went on to say, “Council needs to hear from you, and that you support this development, and that you understand that much of the vitality recently lost due to the decline of our resource industries would be restored through this project.” Like all developments, there is always a chance to gain economically, and several reasons to be concerned environmentally. One of the main concerns of this or any project in Lower Gibsons is that the aquifer, that provides award winning drinking water, could be breached or harmed in some way. The team did state that extreme care will be taken to protect and enhance the waterfront area adjacent to the hotel property and that the building would aim for LEED Gold construction standards. The development would be comprised of 96 hotel units and 31 residences. The George Hotel will be planned as a “people place,” connecting people and com-

munity. The team outlined the architectural design, directed by Randy Knill of DA Architects + Planners, would include pedestrian friendly, two-level waterfront and Gower Point Road street front elevations. The team described it as an attractive terraced concrete building design, which would include three levels of hotel units and one level of condominium residences, all finished to complement the character of the existing town’s architecture. This would also include warm wood accents, shed and dormer roofs, plank and metal style siding, large window sandstone features all integrated into the Pacific West Coast building design along with lush indigenous landscaping and even an organic vegetable garden. Randy’s past experience
includes large and small-scale building types including the River Rock Casino Resort, a 500,000 square foot multiuse destination resort located on the Fraser River in Richmond, BC. The waterfront amenities are expected to be connected to an expanded wharf area accented by a restaurant, seasonal food concessions and several indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. The fuel dock will remain but the existing boat slips would have to be reconfigured to accommodate additional transient moorage and boats up to 120 feet long. The team outlined that they would like to embrace local arts by providing venues and kiosks to host artist’s works, marine history and cultural events. Randy went on to describe that the Seawalk will be extended to provide a continuous pathway

from adjacent Winegarden Park to the Gibsons Marina. The main level of the hotel would feature several public access amenities such as a conference facility, meeting rooms, a Scandinavian-style spa, an indoor pool, a fitness centre, and a spectacular walk-through main lobby concourse that will create a transparent link from the ocean side through to Gower Point Road. The team ostated that there would be a special waterfront patio and meeting room designed to act as an inviting gathering place to host family events all year round. They also described a hotel shuttle service that would provide easy transportation between upper Gibsons, Gibsons Landing and the ferry terminal. The goal is for the George Hotel to attract
32,000 visitors annually, giving the Gibsons Landing area a new community “hub,” and provide a boost for local businesses, service industries, B&Bs, existing motels, along with increased marine tourism. It will also inspire new opportunities for cultural and ecotourism ventures. The project was well presented, although later there were some who wrote to The Local expressing their concern over the size of this development which would take away from the overall quaint-town feeling that Lower Gibsons evokes. The people of Gibsons will appreciate full transparency throughout the process, yet may get upset if there isn’t a chance to publically voice their opinions. Finally, the hotel’s scenic waterfront location is less than 100 feet from the spot where George Gibsons landed in his sloop, the Swamp Angel in 1886 and began homesteading. Shortly thereafter, he and his industrious wife, Charlotte, started the first school, now Gibsons Elementary School, the first Methodist Church and donated land for the first cemetery.

Dear Darla
Exploring creature comforts I am in a long term relationship with a wonderful woman, but we have one major difference and I’m starting to wonder if it’s something that we can overcome, or if I should just cut my losses now. It’s sort of hard to admit but she’s more a risk taker than me. So it’s something that I don’t feel comfortable discussing with my friends let alone with her. It’s embarrassing that I’m the one that feels like the careful one and she’s the daredevil. Usually, it’s the other way around in relationships. Every weekend it seems she’s ready for a new adventure and I’d rather just spend the day taking in the town, going to restaurants and maybe seeing a show. My job is very demanding and on the weekend I’m looking for downtime. She’s always ready to head out of town. I’d like to be with her, but this is starting to wear me out. Can you see some way around this? Signed Comfort Seeker Dear Comfort Seeker, Many couples have different interests and try to
accommodate each other so that it’s more of a favourable situation. Perhaps your insecurity about being less of a risk taker than your girlfriend is getting in the way of honest communication. This is not as uncommon as you might think and your tact would be more helpful if you had cooperation in mind. You have to ask yourself; would you be happy taking part in these adventures half the time or even a quarter of the time? Would she be content to embark on these side trips with a friend? Are you alright taking on the town on your own or with a companion? Some relationships actually thrive by having these separate times. There are lots of questions here and only one way to get the answers. This is something that you’ll have to sit down and have some fireside chats aboutand some attempted trial runs, before you can truly know if it can work for you. Buy hey, that’s just my opinion. Q: When do I know if my spaghetti squash are ready? For this answer The Local went to Heinz from Fay Farms and he said that when they turn from pale white to a nice yellow they’re ready to harvest. Q: Do we have any choice when it comes to the Hydro “smart” meters? The Local contacted Hydro to find out if there were any options regarding this issue. Upon first contact, they said that there wasn’t a choice, that it’s been legislated and that it was mandatory. They also went on to say that it would be a free installation until the end of December, after which time there would be a $300 charge. He stated that if you wanted to avoid that charge, you could contact Corix at 1-888-495-2767. They are the contracted installers. When asked if there was someone in management that could speak to this issue they directed the call to the Smart Meter Department. Cindy Ver-

ROYAL CANADIAN schoor of that department stated that the above information was simply not true. The people that have asked to be put on hold will remain so until their concerns are addressed. They do not plan to simply cut people’s power off after December, if they don’t comply. They also have no plans to charge customers for the installation of the meters after the calendar year. If you have further questions or concerns regarding the smart meter installations, please send them in and The Local will get them answered. If you have any questions that you would like answered by an expert, please send them to publisher@telus.net

Collaborating and growing T
hree local farmers are working together to offer healthy, delicious, organic vegetables picked farm-fresh to order. The Gibsons Farm Collective, a collaboration of Backyard Bounty, Green Room Organics and Three Sisters Farm, was founded in fall of 2011 and has gained customers and momentum ever since. Dawn, from Backyard Bounty, has grown vegetables for more than 20 years and currently uses the SPIN farming method on plots of borrowed land, with her main plot and farm stand on Henry Road. Linda, at Green Room Organics, transitioned from Fraser Valley hydroponic production to soil-based Certified Organic (CO)* farming in the Agricul-
tural Land Reserve (ALR) of Henry Road. Katy, at Three Sisters Farm, grows an amazing array of fruits and vegetables on almost every square metre of her Burton Road farm (also in the ALR) and offers the finest CO eggs on the Coast. The collaboration of Gibsons Farm Collective members increases both their production success and seasonal variety of healthy, delicious vegetables. Customers love the fresh selection, convenience of on-farm pickup, and face-to-face contact with farmers growing their food. The farmers love harvesting to order, hearing what customers are cooking each week and knowing they are helping to build local food resiliency and healthy diets. How it works: subscrib-
ers receive a weekly Fresh Sheet email, detailing what items are available. Customers reply, indicating what and how many items they would like. Katy, Linda, and Dawn harvest most items the day of pick-up (currently Thursday), and customers bring payment and market bags to the farm to collect their goods. Then the eating begins! For more information or to subscribe to the Collective, email gibsonsfarmco lective@gmail.com. Individual farm contact information and directions are available in the Green Banner Local Food Directory, available on the One Straw Society website www. onestraw.ca *Certified Organic Associations of B.C. www.certi fiedorganic.bc.ca

Clean indoors also Come the fall, when it’s time to button up for the winter, it’s best to first give the home a thorough cleaning. Airborne allergens can stick to ducts, vents and filters, leaving a home’s residents susceptible to allergy attacks even after the warm weather has become a distant memory. Go on the defensive Part of readying a home for the winter includes protecting the home and its inhabitants from viruses and bacteria. Fix up the fireplace As a gathering spot for family and friends when the weather outside is frightful, the fireplace will need some attention before the colder weather arrives. canned selections. I can never resist the octopus for example, but I’ll save that recipe for another time. This week I picked up their spot prawns. Pairing prawns with wine really depends on how you’re going to prepare them. For this recipe, I’ve gone with a nice clean crisp Tinhorn Creek Chardonnay. This vintage was shown a bit of new Oak and finished in stainless steel. This means that you’ll have some of that buttery vanilla palette, but it won’t knock you over. It is a very drinkable BC wine that is welcome on the deck and at the table.
