Mountain-top logging looms lphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) recently learned that BC Timber Sales (BCTS) has combined two Sunshine Coast logging cutblocks (formerly separated) into one large 76.2Ha cutblock that could be logged in one operation.

Blocks A87126 (Elphinstone) and A91378 (Dakota Bowl) have been folded into Cutblock A87126.

In 2013, BCTS attempted to sell the Dakota Bowl block twice; however on each occasion no bids were received from logging contractors due to a number of reasons - the main one being the high costs and risks associated with road building up a steep mountain side to access the timber. All former logging roads into the area were de-activated due to the area being overly logged and requiring time to re-stabilize.

The area is a designated Community Watershed and the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) has notified BCTS of their opposition to logging in this watershed on a number of occasions.

“When we scrambled up to this Dakota Bowl block we were shocked by how steep the slopes are,” Ross Muirhead of ELF says. “Once you get up to the ridge, and

see the ‘falling boundaries,’ you fully appreciate that this would in fact be ‘MountainTop’ logging. There are pristine alpine lakes up here, many streams running off slope, and rare 1,000-year old Yellow-cedars. ELF recorded three of the largest Mountain Hemlocks (by circumference) in the province at this site – it’s a rare genetic pool for this species.”

“By examining BCTS’ web site, we now know that they’re combining an easy access, low cost, block on Elphinstone, with the more expensive, high-risk block in Dakota Bowl,” says Hans Penner, also of ELF. “In 2013, contractors walked away from bidding on the Dakota Bowl block, and now BCTS is attempting to force them to take it. If road building proceeds up here, there’s serious risk of slope failures, impacts to a Terasen gas line found at the toe of the slope and sediments inputs to the salmon spawning Dakota Creek. Plus, we observed many ‘potential’ black bear dens in the block that require protection for their survival.”

A Terrain Stability Assessment (TSA) report was completed by an outside engineering firm and listed several High Risk locations where the new logging road could trigger landslides.

If slope failures are intiated, the contractor will have to shut down and call in a soils engineer. The full environmental impacts and costs of this ‘mountain-top’ logging remain unanswered.

Sad, but true, another logging operation is planned in a beautiful natural forest on the Elphinstone slopes, where residents have been calling for park expansion.

Has the Province, through BC Timber Sales, gained the ‘social license’ to clear-cut another piece of our local forests? Have they consulted you? Forests provide environmental services to you and your family without ever sending a bill: including oxygen supply, carbon sequestering, regulation of water flows, micro-climate, recreation, spiritual fulfillment, wildcrafting and habitat for animals.

These forests support a local, sustainable tourism industry; however tourists will stay away from a Clear-Cut Coast.

Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) is a forestry watch and protection group. To push back on this next march of logging across Elphinstone, we’re planning a large group photo – shot in the upper Clack Creek area to show opposition to the proposed destruction of this irreplaceable ecosystem.

We require concerned citizens to show up, each selecting a tree that resonates with them and standing resolutely in front of it. Photographers will capture a forest scene with dozens of human figures standing at the base of every tree in the picture. Opportunity for kids to partake in a peaceful protest. In addition, participants will be given material to name their tree.

The resulting picture will illustrate that we’re inextricably tied to healthy forest ecosystems. Please come out for this fun day and spread the word. BCTS Planners will receive a color photo of the completed forest-people scene.

Editorial Opinion Relying on the kindness of strangers What I regret most in my life are failures of kindness.

L

ast year at about this time, author George Saunders (The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip; Congratulations, By the Way) delivered Syracuse University commencement address that quickly went viral on social media. Witty and thoughtprovoking, it called upon the graduates to embrace the process of becoming kinder, and to hurry it along in their lives.

According to Saunders, as one ages the ambitious things of life gradually become less important, and gentleness assumes a new prominence. Most grandparents can attest to this transformation.

In that year since Saunders’ call for kindness beamed into millions of brainpans via the computer, it appears his message has flashed and died. Where is the kindness? Rage of all kinds – road rage, bus rage, bike rage, party rage – seems to predominate. Where is this rage rooted?

According to Saunders, “There’s a confusion in each of us, a sickness, really: selfishness.” Selfishness may indeed be the root cause of unkindness, because giving primacy to one’s own wants leads to disregarding others’ wants, needs, and comfort. Selfishness for one’s own comfort may lead to a fear, even a hatred, of change. This can range from the absurd (dinner-table rage when the meal offers an unexpected twist) to the anti-social (hateful remarks directed against new neighbours, new Canadians, or new enterprises).

The Sunshine Coast is, by and large, a very kind community. The culture of neighbourliness is rooted deep in the traditions of the First Nations people and the pioneer incoming settlers. On the Coast, people helped people, and that culture continues with fundraisers to aid families facing unexpected challenges (see story, p. 11), and with community gardens that provide those in need with fresh local produce (see story, p. 5). But while these community groups, businesses and individuals reach out, there are others who are holding back, turning inward, and corroding their souls and the community with unkindness and intolerance. This must be recognized and called out wherever it is found.

The new neighbours, new Canadians, and new enterprises should be welcomed into our community by each and every one of us. They are bringing fresh energy, injecting a new perspective and a joy in their adopted Coastal home.

Wrapping up his speech, Saunders noted that if “life is going to be a gradual process of becoming kinder and more loving: Hurry up. Speed it along. Start right now... and to the extent that you can, err in the direction of kindness.”

Let’s not lose sight of that direction in our own lives.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Growing vegan (Re: The New Age Vegan, The Local Weekly, May 22) Yay! Congratulations on representing this important and growing approach to eating in The Local! My hubby Gerry and I have been eating vegan since 1985, and are edging our way into the senior category now.

I host a page on facebook called Gibsons Vegans. I love to chat with folks about the vegan advantage, share resources, etc.

Spirit of healing The Madonna embodies the feminine spirit of healing, nurturing and unconditional love a mother has for all her children. Saint Mary’s Hospital’s name is a tribute to that divine spirit of compassion which is also very present in the ancient Sechelt stone mother/child sheltered in the Tems Swiya Museum. To achieve reconciliation in the wake of the residential school disaster, we mustn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.

The goal is to participate in action to make things right. Write our MP demanding funds to compensate day scholars and support shíshálh culture and language restoration programs so the young may access the great cultural and linguistic wealth that is their heritage. Contribute financially to legal action to accomplish this as needed.

The Sechelt Nation built a most beautiful Catholic church on the shores of Trail Bay in 1889. Delegations of First Nations people from all over BC honoured our Lady of the Rosary at its official opening. Later, shíshálh parishioners built the first Our

Lady of Lourdes church which stood in its place for 63 years. Few outside the Sechelt Nation realize that today Our Lady of Lourdes shelters one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred Aboriginal art in the province and indeed in the whole country, an Aboriginal ‘Way of the Cross’ created by local master shíshálh carver, Eddie Jeffries, rest his soul.

Perhaps Aboriginal and Eco Tour Services could include Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Grotto and Saint Mary’s Hospital Aboriginal art as local gems to explore. This would honour the work of past elders and celebrate shíshálh contributions to local well-being. It would speak to “our capacity for forgiveness, for self-examination, for compassion and our yearning for peace… our resiliency as a people.” (Janie Robinson, Ojibwa Nation at the October TRC gathering in Vancouver).

Follow the money At the Council Meeting of May 7, I posed the question, “When will a Motion come to an open meeting of Council to authorize the investing of the $5.9 million from reserves that will earn interest income of $0.9 million over 10 years and not be spent?” (Mayor stated there would be no Motion.)

No investment – no interest earned! Council needed $2.5 million of the $7.4 million loan to complete the sewer plant construction.

The YES campaign was conducted by Sechelt Council with flyers, newspapers, radio ads by Council members and by a personal letter from the Chief Financial Officer. A positive YES

vote, we were told, would save the District Taxpayers $2.2 million in project financing costs.

The ads, letters and District flyer stated that the $1 million non-repayable grant would be a good deal because it was like getting an interest free loan. They say that “the non-repayable grant is only available with the loan and the grant amount is tied to the amount of the loan.” Is Council charging the loan interest to the sewer participants and using the $1 million grant for something else? The January 15, 2014 Council Minutes show the 10 year repayment schedule for both the interest and principal will be paid by the sewer participants.

This was seven weeks before the Referendum was held.

Council should follow through on their promise and: (a) Utilize the $1 million non-repayable grant to pay the loan interest. (b) Invest the remaining $4.9 million for 10 years, during which time it cannot be spent. (c) Any additional monies earned from this investment must be put into sewer reserves since it is the sewer participants who are repaying the loan.

Global cooling?

All high school science classes taught that we had been through at least eight glacier periods that came and went throughout North America and the main scientist that summed this all up was Milankovitch many years ago. The climate is always changing and man has very little to do with it. Look

up the Medieval warming period when the Vikings lived on a green Greenland, the Roman Climate Optimum and the Holocene Climate Optimum. These last three were much warmer then the warm period in 1998 and lasted much longer without the industrial age and cars.

We should be ready for the next little Ice Age like the 1540 to 1685 little Ice Age that killed half the people on earth. We could build more green houses and ways to grow food. We could be doing something about cleaning the air of manmade dirt, soot and mercury, keeping our water clean and deforestation.

or many Canadians, the Victoria Day long weekend marks the official breaking of soil for gardening - a time to dive into mother earth, be creative, and enjoy the great outdoors. In a world immersed in technology, it can be very rewarding to work with your hands and produce something that is both tangible and beautiful. Nothing tastes better than garden fresh vegetables.

For those who are planning on cultivating a food garden this year, consider planting a row of herbs, vegetables or berries for those in our community who are struggling to get enough nutritional food for themselves or their families. For many individuals, fresh produce is considered a luxury item.

It is a lot pricier than food high in starch and preservatives.

At Sunshine Coast Community Services, we are acutely aware of hunger in our community. Our employees and volunteers are

witness to the daily struggles of a diverse group of people who are not getting enough nutritious food. Last year, our Food Bank gave out over 12,000 bags of groceries, representing over 1,000 visits each month. Children account for over 30 per cent of our clients, while seniors represent the highest growing demographic of Food Bank users.

Interesting stats when you consider that the first Food Bank in Canada opened its doors in 1981 and was originally intended to be a temporary measure. Today, there are more than 800 food banks and 3,000 food programs na-

Hapi Foods co-founder Corin Mullins and her husband and business partner Brian – creators of world-famous Holy Crap cereal – got their start at Sechelt Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market several years ago. As members, they attended weekly and invited people to sample and purchase their super food cereal.

In this collaborative and cooperative venue, they were able to expand their business at an incredible rate – eventually venturing into CBC’s Dragon’s Den and attracting international interest and acclaim. They now have a factory in Gibsons from which they sell their product far

beyond the Sunshine Coast.

Recently, the Mullins duo returned to the Market to give back, with a $500 cheque to help nourish its growth. Certain lands in the bed of Howe Sound being unsurveyed foreshore, commonly known as DL6093, Group 1, New Westminister District, containing 3.874 hectares, assigned to the Corporation of the Town of Gibsons under General Lease Number 242098 dated March 1, 2012 and being more particularly shown on the plan of Section 1.4, The Plan of Appendix 1 of the amendment to the agreement (the “Water Lot”)..

By an agreement made November 17, 1983, as amended, the Town leased the Lands and the Water Lot to the Gibsons Marina Hotel Inc., which expired December 31, 2011. GMHI has the right to renew this Agreement on the same terms and conditions subject to the renewal of the Town’s head lease with the Province and the ability of GMHI and the Town to agree on rent; either through negotiation or arbitration.

The Town proposes to grant to the Gibsons Marina Hotel Inc. (GMHI) a renewal of the lease of the Lands and the Water Lot on the same terms and conditions of the original lease in consideration for which the tenant shall pay rent of 15% of gross revenues, plus one third of the Town’s annual water lot head lease payment and otherwise observe the terms and conditions of the original lease. The term of the agreement shall end February 27, 2042.

Rhubarb is in season: let them eat cake — lots of it!

A

prolific and precocious springtime “fruit,” rhubarb looks like stalks of pinkish green or even magenta celery. Its flavor, however, is much more tart, making it ideal company for sugar in sweet dishes like crisps, compotes, and pie - from which it gets its second name, “pie plant.” But rhubarb also lends a puckery-tart fruitiness to savory dishes, and pairs very nicely with pork and poultry.

There are two basic types of rhubarb found in markets and larger grocery stores: the older, traditional variety, with thicker, green-

er stalks, and the more intensely-colored, slenderstalked variety, sometimes called hothouse rhubarb.

The deep red stalks certainly make for brighter, more attractive dishes, but the concentrated color indicates concentrated tartness, and the greener stalks have a nicely balanced, mellow flavor.

Hothouse rhubarb is available most of the year, while field-grown stalks are available in early spring.

The Pacific Northwest has a second harvest of rhubarb between June and July.

Whatever their color, the

stalks should be heavy and crisp with taut, shiny skin.

Watch out for rubbery, fibrous, dry stalks. Wash the stalks well and trim off the dry ends and leaves, and store in loose plastic in the crisper drawer.

Rhubarb leaves contain both oxalic acid and a more potent, unidentified toxin, so trimming and discarding them is essential. While it’s tempting to peel the fibrous skin as you chop the stalks, try to resist it--the skin holds lots of color and flavor.

Two things happen to rhubarb when it’s cooked:

its juices thicken, and it falls apart into fraying shreds of translucent fibers.

atio lighting is all about creating atmosphere.

Lighting at fast-food outlets is purposely designed to encourage customers not to linger. A fine dining establishment is lit quite differently – subdued, romantic, and flattering to enhance mood. It sets the scene. This should be the goal when designing patio lighting.

To encourage friends and family to relax and enjoy themselves, use subtle downlighting. Consider attaching lights to trees and aiming them downward through the foliage to get a moonlit effect. Or install fixtures in a patio cover or pergola. The pergola acts as a ceiling and can support many differ-

ent styles of light fixtures as long as they are made for outdoor use.

Another way to light a patio is to add fixtures to a wall or column at the edge of the patio. This is an option for new construction because the fixtures have to be integrated into the structure of the wall itself.

Sometimes the fixtures are hidden underneath the wall cap so that the source of the light cannot be seen. This type of lighting helps to illuminate the surface of the patio in a similar fashion to how path lights illuminate walkways. Often downlighting is used in conjunction with wall lighting.

Enhance the pathway illumination with ambient lighting within the beds to provide depth. Choose lights that are subtle and that shine down, illuminating the path and garden and not the visitor’s face.

Step lighting is important for safety, but it’s also an attractive way of uniting the night garden, pathway and patio, bringing depth and the interplay of shadows to the landscape.

Patio popularity poised for growth

rom genteel porches to sleek, seaside balconies in the West, the popularity of outdoor living spaces is poised for significant growth from coast to coast with industry analysts predicting it will be a $5.7 billion market by 2016.

Reinforcing these projections, architects cite an outdoor living space as the most popular ‘special function room’ in housing construc-

tion, while homebuilders list decks among the top three features most requested with new home buys. Decks and porches are now considered true extensions of a home’s living space; it’s far more economical for a family to expand their living space outside than to enlarge or renovate their home’s interior.

The biggest trend in decks is the increase in square footage. Gone are the days of the

20-by-10-foot rectangle with room enough for a grill and some patio furniture. Today’s decks are expanding both horizontally and vertically.

Demand for decks with multiple tiers is increasing as are requests to finish the space below the deck.

When it comes to deck designs, today’s homeowners also are thinking way outside the box and customizing nearly every

aspect of their outdoor living spaces. Remodelers and architects report increased interest in pergolas and walls to define different functional areas and create privacy, as well as integrated features like built-in benches, planter boxes and storage. Potting up interest in patio gardens F

or those with small or patio gardens, one of 2014’s hot trends – using woody plants in containers – will offer a greater choice in outdoor design and an opportunity to try plants that might be outside our hardiness zone.

Hydrangeas, boxwood, rhododendrons, even Japanese maples would be good options for container growth. And a dramatic arrangement of containers can create big impact in the patio garden.

Choose a container that is considerably larger than the root ball of the tree or shrub, and match it with a wheeled support stand for ease of placement (and so arrangements can be refreshed without backbreaking labour). Ceramic containers are elegant, but heavy; consider spun fi-

bre units that vibrate with colour and are resistant to freeze-thaw cycles.

Fill the bottom of the container with a layer of rock, crushed pottery or crushed plastic pots for drainage (or tumbled glass ‘sand’ from Gibsons Recycling Depot – it’s ecofriendly, gives great drainage, and adds weight at the base). Add container potting mix to about half full and add some slowrelease fertilizer. Plants in containers need more nutrition than those in the ground. Remove the shrub or tree from its nursery pot and massage the roots to loosen them. If the roots are circling the pot, make a few cuts about a half inch deep around the rootball to encourage growth.

Place the plant in the pot and fill with more potting

mix. Tamp it lightly and water well.

Place the pot in the appropriate sun situation indicated on the nursery tag and keep it well watered as it adapts to its new situation. A container will need more water than a garden in the ground. Plan to water each evening.

If the shrub or tree is hardy to our zone, it can be transplanted to the ground in the fall, watering it well. Overwintering trees and shrubs in containers is possible, either by heeling them in outdoors, or storing them in a protected environment.

Cementing garden design with urbanite N

othing pulls the value of a home down like old, cracked and crumbling concrete walks, patios and driveways. And with new formulations, finishing techniques and even colours, homeowners can pour an Italian-themed terra-cotta hued terrazzo, or a crisp white French provincial terrace in an afternoon – with professional assistance of course.

The removed concrete used to be considered garbage and hauled to the landfill. Lately, as eco-friendly repurposing of materials became fashionable, the material – broken up into manageable sections ready to be re-used – is now rather grandly labeled ‘urbanite.’ Concrete’s durability and high embodied energy makes it an especially viable candidate for reuse.

Urbanite can be used to

create a patio or walkway that looks similar to flagstone – particularly if the pieces are dyed with something like iron sulfate and the spaces filled with groundcover or grey pebbles.

When replacing a driveway or sidewalk, break up the slabs into manageable sections and stack it to form a dry-stone retaining wall, or planters to edge the patio area. The aged look of bro-

In addition to the ubiquitous mosquito and the ambitious paper wasps, squirrels, moles, raccoons, and other rodents may also descend on a property. Neighborhoods that abut natural ecosystems or infringe on wild animals’ habitats (which is pretty much every neighbourhood on the Coast) may see a wider array of animals en-

croaching on entertaining spaces. Deer, bears, coyotes, and certain bird species can present their own brands of trouble. Homeowners new to an area may have to experience a learning curve to determine which pests are common to a certain area, as well as which seasons bring which creatures.

Animals can be kept out of a yard with fences and other barriers, such as thorny bushes. Lavender and rosemary are other aromatics that may deter pests. Blood meal and soap solutions can repel deer and

other wildlife that may feed on garden plants. In addition, maintain a clean grill and store trash in tightly secured receptacles indoors.

Certain insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, find the aromas of citronella grass, basil and marigold offensive. Surrounding a property with these plants may create a natural bug repellent and eliminate the need for electronic and inhumane bug zappers that also attract and kill beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies.

Because the heavy used concrete did not have to be hauled away, the owners realized significant cost savings on the project.

Hastings School in Vancouver’s East Side found urbanite – a free resource – suited their needs admirably when creating stacked retaining walls. The finished product looked luxurious and sturdy.

The internet offers many suggestions and examples of innovative use of durable, cost-friendly urbanite.

obotic Horse Mechanical Sun (RHMS) and Brett Wildeman take the reigns on Saturday, May 31 at the Roberts Creek Legion. Doors open at 8pm.

Tickets available at the door ($5 members / $10 non-members).

Best described as Outlaw Roots, RHMS perform original songs that are both sweet and gritty and tell real life tales close to the heart and the funny bone. It is country music that has been hijacked by poets and rebels. “We have some colourful history under our belts”, says RHMS drummer Andrew Bate. “Our music reflects this. You write different material when you are older. What is important to you changes.”

RHMS will be accompanied by local singersongwriter, Brett Wildeman. His sprawling lyrics and moody guitar tones,

pening at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Council on Wednesday, June 4, the new exhibit featuring the mixed media works of Powell River artists Adam Cramb and Bill Edmonds asks cryptically “How Soon Is Now?” Meet the artists at the opening reception June 4 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Edmonds believes “that contemporary art should take a critical approach to current social and cultural ideas” and in his current body of work he focuses on “anonymity and the release of personal information.”

Adam Cramb describes his art as “a paradox with a sense of humour at the tragedy of an overwhelming urbanism on nature” and describes his creations as “paint and particulates … matter and objects placed at random discretion across flat surfaces.”

Halloran crowd-funding Body of Light

R

oberts Creek-based multimedia artist Gordon Halloran recently launched an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign for Body of Light, his latest – and very ambitious – project for theatre and film, themed to debut at this year’s Sechelt Arts Festival.

Inspired by his own unexpected experience with serious illness, Halloran has been developing concepts for the show for the past year. The theatrical event will express itself in multiple genres and celebrate the myriad of human emotions experienced when one falls ill and learns to deal with the

human body in a vulnerable state. In the interactive stage piece, Halloran explores the contradictions, rituals, emotions, variety, humour and surprise of moving from a besieged state to getting well.

For anyone who has experienced a similar call to consciousness, or for those working in healing, the project invites your participation and support. Roving Artists show June 7 Quest seeks truth, love, purpose T

Known by a number of different names over the years, in 2005 the group settled on the Roving Artists, and settled on a regular weekly meeting at Eric Cardinall Hall after following a nomadic existence, meeting weekly in various venues in and around Gibsons.

Members Mary Burgess, Pat Drummond, Janice Edmonds, Ross Harry, Tom Fraser, Caroly Nicholson, Rita Sadlik, Julie Skippon, Leo White and Ann Williams pursue their own style, media and subject matter, often inspired by travel and local surroundings.

Five-year agreement promotes wood-frame construction and BC wood products

ritish Columbia has signed a five-year agreement with Shanghai’s Pudong District to promote wood-frame construction and BC wood products to meet the Chinese district’s needs for energy-efficient, low-carbon buildings. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed

by Forestry Innovation Investment, the Government of BC’s market development agency for wood products, and the Shanghai Pudong Construction and Transportation Commission. The agreement calls for further cooperation between the two agencies on the development of wood-frame construction technology in Pudong.

The agreement, signed during a visit to British Columbia by Vice Governor Ming Wei of the People’s Government of Pudong New Area (in charge of construction and transportation for Pudong, Shanghai’s financial district), aims to promote and enhance wood-frame construction systems in Shanghai. Pudong includes some of the most iconic buildings in Shanghai, including the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Financial Centre. More than 5 million people live in the district.

BC wood and building systems are being used to address China’s growing urban housing needs, such as the Sanlin (Shanghai) Residential Housing project where BC wood is being used in roof trusses, partition walls, and the construction of hybrid concrete-wood buildings, including an administration building and a cultural centre.

Forestry Innovation Investment operates joint market development programs in China with the BC forest industry. Funding support for these programs is provided by the Government of Canada through Natural Resources Canada, the BC government and the forest industry. Since the provincial and federal governments and industry came together to launch the market development program in China in 2003, annual exports of BC softwood lumber to China have increased almost 2,000 per cent. China is BC’s largest overseas market for softwood lumber.
