LaMothe explained that the reliability and speed of the 4G LTE network will particularly appeal to small businesses and health care providers. With the new technology (that can be seamlessly upgraded as new innovations develop), medical records and information can be transferred quickly, and patients can access specialists through video conferencing – eliminating the need in some cases to travel to the Lower Mainland for routine appointments.

“The Sunshine Coast now has the fastest and most reliable service available. As time goes on and technology evolves, it will be very easy for us to keep pace, and much simpler and easier to upgrade,” according to LaMothe.

Halfmoon Bay OCP A-OK

At its regular meeting of April 24, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) Board adopted Bylaw 675: Halfmoon Bay Official Community Plan (OCP).

With an overall theme of ‘Rural by Nature,’ the plan focuses on maintaining the community’s exceptional quality of life and abundant recreational opportunities, living in harmony with its natural environment and encouraging sustainable social and economic growth while respecting heritage.

The new OCP replaces the previous OCP adopted

in 1990 and will guide land use and community planning by establishing general policies and principles that govern the overall direction of development, servicing and land use patterns in the Halfmoon Bay OCP area.

Garry Nohr, SCRD Board Chair and Electoral Area B Director notes that “Development of an OCP requires a strong understanding of local issues, sound decision making, broad public engagement and knowledge of provincial legislation.”

The OCP incorporates

many SCRD key studies and plans and integrates with the shíshálh First Nation strategic land use plan. The shíshálh Chief and Council commented that this innovative approach for local planning is “another important example of our positive government to government working relationship.”

Editorial Opinion

May the Fourth be with you Of late, we’ve noticed a number of folks referring to members of the press as ‘the Fifth Estate.’ Being picky by nature, we point out that the correct term is ‘Fourth Estate’ (since the term‘ink-stained wretches’ pretty much doesn’t apply in this digital age.) The Fifth Estate, we point out, is a CBC television program, or more recently a rather mediocre movie about WikiLeaks; the term to refer to bloggers and online journalists operating out of the mainstream.

Referring to the press as the Fourth Estate dates back to 1787, coined by Edmund Burke – that guy with all the great lines. In 1837, Thomas Carlyle referred to “A Fourth Estate, of Able Editors, irrepressible, incalculable.”

What a wonderful thought. What a wonderful tradition.

What, we wonder, has happened?

For the fourth estate is shrinking, decreasing, and appears to be slowly disappearing as daily newspapers, and many weekly community newspapers, cease publication. The tradition of a press that records and disseminates the news of the day more or less accurately, and offers opinion on the foibles of society and government, is becoming endangered.

Recently we watched a thread of discussion develop on Facebook – a favoured tool of faceless Fifth Estate bloggers – which took issue with the editorial pages of the Coast’s newspapers becoming increasingly ‘political.’ This implies that at some point, they weren’t. And now, by returning to their traditional roots, the Coast’s Fourth Estate somehow betrayed a community trust, instead of resuming one.

A newspaper’s opinion pages, properly, should act as a sounding board for the community, questioning behaviour, policy, procedure, and just about anything else questionable. That is its traditional function. But recently we see a celebrity-journalism quality creeping in, with columnists examining their navels and holding forth on their personal travails. It’s so Oprah. And it sidesteps the hard work a newspaper should be doing in favour of soft journalism.

Easy to read, easy to forget, no thinking required.

About a year ago, The Local Weekly began wading into the political waters, much to the surprise of some of our readers, who accused us of using our columns as a ‘bully pulpit.’ Now, this term is not as it sounds; coined by President Theodore Roosevelt, he referred to the White House and its relationship with the media as “such a bully pulpit” from which to sermonize about social reforms. In that context, ‘bully’ meant ‘superb’ or ‘wonderful.’ And you know, even as the Fourth Estate becomes more and more endangered, the editorial columns still have the potential to be such a bully pulpit.

We should hold on to this tradition, and this pulpit, with both hands.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Stop, look, listen Bill Conway, Chair of Sechelt’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, recently indicated he is very concerned that the buttons used to activate the operation of crosswalk lights at Inlet and Teredo are not grouped together and the timer controlling the length of time of operation of lights does not give many people time to cross the street. It appears installation is not in accordance with the BC Ministry of Transportation guidelines for traffic signals for crosswalks. He is requesting that people contact the District of Sechelt to ask that this be corrected.

Go! It’s green With so many activities occurring on a sunny Saturday afternoon, the good crowd of people that participated in the Green Jobs BC forum in Gibsons reflected the general concern with climate change and employment Green Jobs BC is a joint effort of BC’s Labour and Environmental movements. The intent is to develop a program that actually addresses the root causes of the climate change crisis while looking towards a full employment economy. The initial work presented at the Gibsons workshop identified four areas to be addressed – energy production, building retrofits, transportation alternatives and intelligent, value added

forestry practices. The local participants noted the agenda to date was somewhat urban centred and discussed the need to include agriculture, fisheries and strengthened public services, particularly post secondary education.

There is a brief post on the Sunshine Coast Labour Council Facebook page that looks at the event. To a great extent the issue is not whether alternative directions exist and should be pursued, but rather that there is no political will in the governing parties. For this reason it was gratifying that two BC MLAs, Nicholas Simon and George Heyman both participated.

Code grey for nurses?

Our St.Mary’s hospital hardworking caring nurses are stressed out by the increasing number of patients needing care. Our wonderful nurses work load has increased from one nurse for five patients to one nurse for nine patients; nearly twice as many patients per nurse; is this good? This intolerable pressure on nurses is making it difficult for a nurse to answer important patient call bells in a timely manner.This is not good for patients health and nurses morale. There is a need for more nurses now.

Meanwhile PM Harper is wasting peoples’ hardearned tax dollars sending six costly CF-18 fighter jets and military officers to North Atlantic Treaty Organization bases in volatile

eastern Europe. The money will be better spent hiring more nurses and improving our public health and child care services.

McDowell ‘misinformed’ I am replying to your letter in the Local on April 10 from Tim McDowell (Is arnica effective? Science disagrees) regarding homeopathy.

Even his subject line is misinformed. Only recently, two leading universities in Italy conducted research on a homeopathic medicine and found it influences genetic expression associated with nerve cells. (http://www. biomedcentral.com/14726882/14/104).

The big problem with Tim McDowell’s thinking (other than that it is simplistic) is that he has missed out a third and equally significant major tenet of homoeopathy and that is that it treats the WHOLE PERSON and THE INDIVIDUAL. It is for this reason that one cannot evaluate it with the same criteria as one would allopathic medicine, because randomized double blind trials are based on groups of people, regardless of their susceptibility.

Remedies are always prescribed on an individual basis according to similarity of symptoms. This is a long established and recognized practice even in allopathic medical history...ie: The hair of the dog that bit you.

There are many different accounts and statistics to support the efficacy of remedies in treatment. For example, in the treatment of the outbreak of Spanish flu at the turn of the last century, homeopathy was significantly more effective than allopathy or indeed of no treatment.

If, as Mr. McDowell suggests, homeopathy is merely a placebo, why does it work on babies and animals?

It seems that if Mr. McDowell cannot smell, taste or touch it, then it doesn’t exist or cannot be beneficial. Does he perhaps not believe in radiation?

Celebrating Drinking Water Week Talk of The Town Wayne Rowe Mayor, Town of Gibsons

The Town of Gibsons provides pure untreated water from the Gibsons aquifer to approximately threequarters of its population.

The remaining, supplied by the Regional District via long term agreement, is treated and is sourced from the Chapman watershed.

We’re proud of our water system and aquifer and feel highly motivated to protect it and have designed our policies and infrastructure with a strong conservation goal in mind. A fact we are very proud of is that since 2008, there has been a 42 per cent reduction in water consumption in Gibsons, due in large part to the role that the users of the system have played. Water metering, fair pricing, leak detection and repairs and education have been instrumental in helping us achieve that reduction.

Since the release of the aquifer mapping project report in May of last year, we have implemented several key recommendations such

as an on-going monitoring program and the creation of a Development Permit Area for aquifer protection, expected to be considered

by Council this summer.

As well, as part of our continued commitment to increase access to safe drinking water, a second water fill station is being planned for the Gibsons Public Market.

In partnership with Deer Crossing the Art Farm and School District No. 46, elementary school students are learning through art about the role that nature plays in delivering reliable municipal services by connecting them with ecological assets like the Gibsons Aquifer.

The works created by the students will be presented to the community in the fall and some selected ones will be installed in public areas.

Gibsons’ residents are passionate about their aquifer, and preserving it is a high priority for Council. We understand water’s contribution to supporting critical ecosystems that lay the foundation for our livelihoods. On behalf of Council, I encourage everyone to celebrate Drinking Water Week by continuing to use this precious resource wisely, by learning more about our natural assets and being aware of the value and importance of water. I would also like to recognize the hard work done by our staff that maintain and operate the Town’s water and sewer systems effectively.

It takes all of us to protect it and sustain it for future generations.

This week is National Youth Week, and a new national Ipsos-Reid survey reveals only 44 per cent of Canadian parents speak with their children about money, finances, budgets and savings. Conversely, the poll indicates 94 per cent of parents agree that if Canadian youth are taught about savings at an early age, it will lead to better financial management practices.

Sunshine Coast Credit Union (SCCU) is one

of five Canadian credit unions that are on a mission to create a nation of smart savers, launching an initiative that demonstrates the unique way in which credit unions do business: Humanomics where people matter, community matters.

The first Humanomics initiative, is Canada’s first-ever Youth Savings Account – offered specifically only to 11- and 12year olds. The account

Evans-Cullen joins GDPL team

This month’s Books and Beyond column was written by Heather Evans-Cullen, the new Community Outreach Coordinator for the Gibsons and District Public Library (GDPL).

There are many reasons why GDPL is a great place to be, and one of my favourites is how every day at the library is full of creative energy and sharing of ideas.

Our ongoing programs are intended to foster lifelong learning, and our event calendar includes a wide range of activities from travel slideshows to mushroom picking advice to author visits. If you

have thoughts on what you would like to see offered at the Gibsons library, please contact me.

One example of our library’s vibrancy was our kick off centennial event on March 26. Hundreds of community members enjoyed an afternoon full of theatre, puppetry, stories and refreshments. A big thanks to all the staff, board mem-

bers, performers and volunteers who helped make the event so enjoyable and successful. We have a diverse range of programs available throughout the month of May including Conversational French and Spanish, Money Skills Workshops, Computer Basics, Book Club and the Capilano University Lecture “Journeys to Jinhua: Cross Cultural

The District of Sechelt is excited to announce the Residential Organic Waste Pilot Project.

Around 500 homes in the Davis Bay area have been selected for this pilot.

Organic waste makes up a large percent of the residential waste heading to the landfill on a weekly basis.

The District of Sechelt is conducting this pilot project with a local waste disposal company Grayco Disposal and the innovative local composter Salish Soils.

Weekly pickups will start on Friday May 23.

Green Bins and a Kitchen Catcher and educational materials will be delivered to the selected households the week of May 12.

The District of Sechelt and representatives from Grayco Disposal and Salish Soils will present at the Davis Bay’s Community Association Meeting on Wednesday, May 14 at 7pm.

Researchers at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Dallas discovered just why dark chocolate packs such a healthy punch. Otherwise indigestible portions of the chocolate are converted by microbes in the digestive system into anti-inflammatory compounds called polyphenolic polymers that can prevent certain conditions, including cardiovascular disease, from developing.

The sugar and fat content of the standard candy bar can overshadow the health benefits of dark chocolate. But those who consume the majority of their dark chocolate in the form of unsweetened cocoa powder can avoid such consequences. Roughly two tablespoons of cocoa powder per day mixed into drinks, sprinkled over oatmeal and consumed in many other ways will give all the anti-inflammatory benefits needed.

In addition to antiinflammatory properties, dark chocolate contains several chemical compounds that have a positive effect on mood and cognitive health. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine, or PEA, the same chemical the brain creates when a person feels like they’re falling in love.

The world has lost a legend… some would say a Roberts Creek icon.

Johnjohn (John) Morris passed away suddenly on April 27, 2014, while doing his winter thing in Thailand.

Born and raised in Leaside, Ontario, Johnjohn picked up his roots and moved West in the late 60s, settling on the Sunshine Coast in Roberts Creek, BC, where he has lived for nearly 40 years.

Johnjohn was pre-deceased by his parents Neil and Ev, and leaves behind brothers Peter (Sharon), Steve (Liz) and Paul (Jo), and a younger sister Lainey (Brendan Kennedy). His many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunt and uncle will remember him fondly.

The community of Roberts Creek and his worldwide family will celebrate his life on Saturday May 17, 2014. Everyone is welcome to join us at 2pm at the Roberts Creek Legion toGarden share storiesClub and singclass a song for JJ.
