The pride of Noordwijk: The radiant white lighthouse is perhaps the best known and most beautiful landmark in Noordwijk. The tower was built in 1922 and lit for the first time in August 1923. It has six floors and 108 steps. A little higher than the midpoint at the front is a three-sided lookout post offering a view of the horizon. Right at the top is an open balcony with an even broader, more spectacular view. The light from the tower can be seen from 18 nautical miles (33km) away and the lighthouse has been a national monument since 1980. The tower is only open to the public on special occasions, such as Open Monument Day.

A bit of history Noordwijk has a rich history, stretching back to around 2000 BC, the date of the first traces of inhabitancy. In 847 a Scottish Benedictine monk, named Jeroen, came to Noordwijk. He built a chapel and carried out missionary work. In 856 Jeroen of Noordwijk was tortured and beheaded by the Normans. After his death a Roman chapel was built in his honour, which quickly became a place of pilgrimage. In 1303 this chapel was replaced with a large stone church, the predecessor of the current Sint Jeroenskerk (Saint Jeroen’s Church). In 1429 Noordwijk was officially declared a place of pilgrimage by the Bishop of Utrecht. The most important relic was Saint Jeroen’s skull. In 1450, however, the church was destroyed in a big fire, and the 16th century saw an end to Noordwijk’s status as a place of pilgrimage. Saint Jeroen’s skull vanished without a trace. A tale of fishermen and bulbs The first inhabitants of Noordwijk were probably fishermen. The first ‘vierboet’ (lighthouse, a fire on a hill) was built in 1444, on the site of the current Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin. In 1474 Noordwijk had a fleet of 38 fishing boats called bomschuits which sailed from the beach. The last bomschuit sailed a hundred

years ago, in 1913. In the 18th and 19th centuries Noordwijk grew to become the most important producer of herbs in the Netherlands. The herbs were generally traded in Amsterdam and used medicinally. Herb cultivation was followed by bulb cultivation. By the end of the 19th century tulips, daffodils, gladioli and other flowers were grown. The majority of bulb fields lie behind the dunes, where the sandy soil is ideal for cultivation. Noordwijk’s entries can also be admired at international bulb and flower exhibitions. Today the Noordwijk bulb area covers 311 hectares of land.

Floral seaside resort of Europe Noordwijk first became a seaside resort in 1866. Those were the days of bathing machines and operators, when days out at the beach were a fashionable activity for the elite. Sea water was believed to have a cleansing effect. In this period work started on the construction of Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin, which still catches the eye on the crest of the Noordwijk dunes. In subsequent years the beach also became accessible to the less well-to-do. The arrival of the steam tram enabled many holiday makers to visit the seaside. The unique combination of the beach and the colourful fields of flowers ensured that Noordwijk blossomed into the ‘floral seaside resort of Europe’.

Oude Jeroenskerk Tower Oude Jeroen is not just a beautiful church. You can also climb the towers. A real experience! Climb the 110 steps of the tower of Oude Jeroenskerk (Old Jeroen’s Church), which is 40m high with walls 2m thick. Hidden between the ancients forests, in the middle of the colourful Flower area, lies Netherlands biggest hidden treasure: Keukenhof Castle. Within 15 car-minutes from Noordwijk appears the beautiful Keukenhof Castle, which is also easily driveable by bicycle. In 2012 the Castle has openend its doors for public for the first time and is now a marvellous place to enjoy history, culture and nature. Cobra Buiten In the gardens of Keukenhof Castle the exhibition ‘Cobra in the Open’ is organised in cooperation with the Cobra Museum Amstelveen. The first Cobra in the Open exhibition, Hof van Appel, presented twenty large sculptures by Karel Appel, made during his Tuscan period. The second exhibition, My Secret Garden, is dedicated to the sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri, who joined Cobra in Paris in 1948. The exhibition of this year is in a co-production with the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Several sculptures are shown on the forested grounds surrounding the castle. Art and Culture Park Keukenhof Castle is transformed into a real art- and culture park. With various art expositions, unspoiled nature and beautiful walking trails you can enjoy a complete day out at Keukenhof Castle. History & Culture to see Tip:

Flood walk In her novel Flood Susan Smit describes Noordwijk in a bygone era. Whether you have read the book or not, it’s a wonderful experience walking in the footsteps of the main character Adriana on the flood walk. The walk takes about 30 minutes and is an excellent idea for a summer outing. You’re swept along past typical fishermen’s cottages, the ‘Gat van Palace’ (the space left behind after a hotel burnt down in 1980), the herring smokehouse and many other wonderful locations. The route can be collected from Visitor Center Noordwijk, or found at www. noordwijk.info and www.kunstklank.nl.

Atlantikwall Museum Noordwijk A unique exhibition in a series of bunkers from the Second World War, situated among the dunes. It is also possible to visit the bunker complex on the North Dunes. Literary walking tour of Noordwijk (in Dutch) Fan of Dutch literature? Search for ‘literaire rondwandeling Noordwijk’ on your smartphone and you’ll find a handy app to take you back to times past. The app guides the walker along the famous spots in Noordwijk inhabited or described by authors. Visitors are guided with literature from various periods, from the well known Tachtigers, an innovative poetry movement of the late 19th century to bestselling authors such as Harry Mulisch.

Veldzicht Regional Museum Bulbs, herbs and Blaarkop cows are the focal points of this museum. On special occasions a cheese cellar beneath the farm is open to visitors. There is also a herb garden and a shop. At the Veldzicht bulb company you can see how bulbs were cultivated now and in the past. There is a lecture or workshop on the first Saturday of every month. France to Noordwijk. On Saturday 10th May 2014 participants will make their spectacular final sprint along the Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard. A wonderful spectacle, for spectators too. All cars were made before 1972 and by the time they get to the boulevard in Noordwijk, they will already have a journey of over 2500 kilometres behind them. After the Tulip Rally Sprint the cars drive directly to Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin just off the boulevard for the ceremonial finish. www.tulpenrallye.nl

The Most Beautiful Traffic Jam in the Netherlands (2th - 4th May) On the Saturday and Sunday of the parade weekend â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Most Beautiful Traffic Jam in the Netherlandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is set up on the Kon. Market under the Linden This special market on 14th and 15th June in the historic centre of Noordwijk Binnen attracts visitors to southern European scenes: flower stalls, natural products and garden ideas, with atmospheric live jazz in the background. Life is a beach!

Beach Life There are beaches, and then there are Noordwijk’s beaches. Experiencing Noordwijk’s beach is like tasting something delicious you’ve never tried before: you eat it and you just know it’s right. Watch the children playing in the ‘mini sea’ (shallow stretches of water on the beach, known as ‘kimmetje’ to the residents of Noordwijk), take pictures of the cool surfers and stay until the sea-gulls come to pick the crumbs out of the sand and the sun turns orange and sinks into the sea. Have breakfast, lunch or dinner, or relax on the terrace of your pick of one beach cafés, whether you like it trendy, exclusive, ordinary, sporty or child friendly. If you can think of it, it’s here in Noordwijk! Shells Noordwijk is the perfect place to find unusual beach treasures: the most common are shells of the sub truncate surf clam and American razor clam. The shells with the brown, blue or grey stripes are old, sometimes even fossilised specimens of the sub truncate surf clam. There are many other beautiful shells, such as cockles, wedge shells, Baltic clams and whelks. When the wind blows from the east little horn shells (like spiral staircases) get washed up. Jellyfish Not all jellyfish sting. Easterly winds bring in brightly coloured jellyfish with long tentacles towards the coast, particularly blue fire and compass jellyfish. If you get stung, never wash the area with salt water: dip it in vinegar instead! noordwijk

A two part beach Noordwijk aan Zee has a variety of beaches: off the north and south boulevards, Duindamseslag and Langevelderslag, and in the direction of Zandvoort. The location of the Duindamseslag and Langevelderslag beaches gives them a completely different atmosphere to those by the central boulevards. The access roads are surrounded by peaceful nature and dunes. The Duindamseslag can only be reached on foot or by bicycle through the dunes. At the end of the Langevelderslag is St(r)andplaats Nederzandt, which can be accessed by car. Blue Flag & QualityCoast The Blue Flag is an international quality label which is awarded annually to seaside resorts that have clean, environmentallyfriendly, safe swimming areas. Noordwijk has also been awarded the European QualityCoast mark. This quality mark is awarded to international coastal sites recognizing the high standards of coastal and beach management in the areas of tourism and the environment, the conservation of nature and landscape, identity and cultural heritage.

With a little help.... People who are less mobile can also get onto the beach. How? Using the special beach wheelchairs or a big open jeep. ‘Jutter’ beach wheelchairs are available free all year round. These are entirely made of plastic, have soft, broad tyres and are waterproof, so that they can go a little way into the water. These beach wheelchairs can be reserved from various beach cafés from April to September. Locations with the ‘Jutter’ beach wheelchairs are indicated with a Jutter wheelchair flag. Open from March - October Noordwijk aan Zee offers a variety of beaches, each with its own atmosphere. The beaches beside and to the north of the Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard are lively and trendy with lots of ‘clubs’. SummerEvents All summer long there are plenty of cultural, sporting, and festive events in Noordwijk. Star Balm Strandlopen (Beach Race) Every Thursday in summer a running race takes place on the beach. This is a great spectacle. That happens in real life too, but in wind and weather, freezing cold and gale force 10 as well. The brave KNRM (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution) members and the rescue team are at the ready all year round to ensure the safety of holiday makers.

KNRM De Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution, KNRM) is an organisation truly bound to the sea. Their lifeboats can resist storms and operate at some distance from the coast. The KNRM sails in all weather. Noordwijk has a large, enthusiastic club of volunteers. The pride of Noordwijk! This group of tough, skilled rescue workers have already saved many lives with the help of their lifeboat, the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Paul Johannesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The organisation can be called out 24 hours a day. The Rescue Institution is maintained by donations, so contributions are more than welcome! www.knrm.nl

Rescue Team Noordwijk also has a very active rescue team. Their tasks include patrolling and guarding the beach to prevent problems. They operate from the land up to a kilometre into the sea. On busy days at the beach the rescue team drive up and down the beach all day looking out for missing children and intervening where incidents occur. Noordwijk Surf Hotspot! Noordwijk is a real hotspot for kite surfing. For experienced surfers, there are plenty of great surf spots and shops with surfboards and kite boards for hire. For the less experienced surfer, there are plenty of opportunities to take lessons or join a course. Beach Break and The Strand both offer lessons. On Noordwijkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beaches there are three spots where a kite surfer can land and take off: 1. Radio station Nora near Langevelder slag (for everyone). 2. Cycling & mountain biking There are many cycle paths and routes in the area, including paths through the dunes to Zandvoort and Katwijk. Mountain bikers will have the time of their lives here. There is a special path for them through the pine woods in the Noordduinen. Another option is walking or cycling with a guide who knows the way and has prepared the route. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good exercise on foot, or you can hire a bike, scooter or moped if you prefer. Walking & Nordic Walking An extensive network of paths takes walkers through coniferous woodlands and open dune fields, with surprising views. You might pick a path leading over the highest ridges, with views of the North Sea on one side and the bulb fields behind. Observant walkers can spot foxes, roe deer, squirrels or even fallow deer. Artwork in the Dunes A refreshing art-themed walk through the Kunst in Duinpad artwork project on the HollandsDuin, an area belonging to the Staatsbosbeheer (state forest administration), where you can see a variety of works of art, which invite you to observe, think and enjoy. The varied landscapes of woods, rugged dunes and colourful bulb fields make wonderful biking routes. You can make up the route as you go along, or choose from several numbered routes of varying distance, available free from the Noordwijk Visitor Center Mountain biking is for sand, grass or mud, not asphalt. This activity is much more energetic than ordinary cycling. Your bike is on rough ground, and you’re continually going uphill and downhill. Preferably in beautiful natural surroundings. Fortunately Noordwijk has that in plentiful supply. To the north of the centre is an extensive green area managed by Staatsbosbeheer, part of the Hollands Duin, the name of the long stretch of coast from Wassenaar to the north of Noordwijk. The sporty cyclists among us will enjoy the ATB route set out in the Noordwijk Woods. The route takes you through the woods and dunes. The route is not particularly hilly, although there are occasional steep sections. It’s not too difficult but there are some technically challenging places. An opportunity to actively enjoy these typically Dutch dunes.

Cycle network The cycle network is really simple: just pick a route and follow the signs from one numbered junction to the next. There is an information panel at each junction with a general overview map. The system makes it really simple to put together your own route. Decide for yourself where you want to start and work out your route on www.fietseninzuidholland.nl or on the free cycle map. Write down the junction numbers in sequence and you’re ready to hit the road.

Big reception for André Kuipers ESA Astronaut André Kuipers prepared his mission to space at ESA-ESTEC, the international Space Agency located in Noordwijk. When Kuipers came back from space he was honored with a ‘National Homage’ in 2012 in the coastal town. Walk of Space In 2013 work began on Noordwijk’s Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard to create a ‘Walk of Space’, the first astronaut to provide a tile with space boot prints will be Wubbo Ockels.
