The 2013-2014 Season

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

O

ur newly named Department of Performing and Media Arts will bring a wide range of theatre, dance and film events to the Schwartz Center. We’ll start with a big splash: September will bring Bill T. Jones, the internationally acclaimed dance company, to our beautiful Kiplinger Theatre. Apart from this special event, we’ll present four larger productions: Two classic plays – William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus and Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind – will be directed by our most advanced students. Faculty will present new work: Associate Professor Beth F. Milles will direct an exciting adaptation of Charlie Chaplin’s short film One AM, called In the Middle of the Night, and choreographers Jumay Chu and Byron Suber, and lighting designer E.D. Intemann will design and direct our annual Locally Grown Dance Festival. At the same time, a number of smaller events will be happening: dance concerts choreographed by our faculty and students; student film screenings; a Black Box production directed by local theatre professional Sarah K. Chalmers; an adaptation of Chaucer’s “The Wife of Bath’s Tale,” featuring a score by talented music major Danny Bernstein ‘14, and directed by theatre graduate student Stephen Low. Other students are leading new initiatives as well: Red Shadow Productions is organizing a Ten-Minute Playfest, and film students are organizing the first ever Centrally Isolated Film Festival, celebrating regional student filmmakers. We will celebrate our best student playwrights and screenwriters during a staged reading of their work featuring professional actors and a professional director. Our students take center stage in many of these events: under the guidance of faculty, they direct, organize festivals, write, score, perform, choreograph and design shows. We very much hope you can lend your support and join us for as many of these shows as possible!

Sam Shepard’s haunting drama of two divided families in the gritty American West. Developed under the guidance of Assistant Professor Melanie Dreyer-Lude, and directed by PMA major Jesse Turk ‘14, A Lie of the Mind is an increasingly frenetic examination of generations torn apart by a marriage and brought together by an unspeakable act of violence.

A Roman General returns from a brutal war to bury the sons he lost in the conflict. The end of the war and this final act of sacrifice is not the end of bloodshed. A chain of revenge engulfs Rome as Titus struggles to escape the horrors of a violent world. Titus Andronicus will be directed by Spencer Whale ‘14 under the guidance of PMA professor Bruce Levitt.
