KENNETH W. CHANCEY, D.M.D. When I was 10 years old, I lived in a fatherless home and had somewhat of an inferiority complex. My physician, Dr. James Stanley, asked me, “Ken, what do you want to do when you grow up?” I knew I wanted to be a dentist, as I was amazed at what all Dr. Baker Lee, my childhood dentist, could do. So I answered Dr. Stanley, “Dr. Stanley, I want to be a dentist, but I am not good enough (person) to be a dentist.” “Sure you can be a dentist,” Dr. Stanley replied, “Someone has to be a dentist, you be a dentist.” Those words of encouragement from a professional male authority, set my life’s course. Forty-two years later, I am still practicing the arts and science of dentistry. Born and partly raised in Enterprise, Alabama, I always had a desire to make things “better.” I preferred to fix up an old house or an old boat, instead of buying new ones. I carried this preference to fix things ultimately into my career. SOUTHERN CLINIC, P.C. Southern Clinic offers more services under one roof than any other clinic in the Southeast. The second generation physician doesn’t take his patients for granted, and he is thankful they choose the clinic for their primary care. In addition to expanded diagnostic services, Southern Clinic has been pleased with its relationship with SAMC to provide registration clerks in the office. This allows for all registration and precertification paperwork to be completed at Southern Clinic before a patient is sent to SAMC. Setting the Standard for Pediatric Health Care

Rapid changes in health care drive transformation in the practice of pediatric medicine. Dothan Pediatric Healthcare Network is keeping pace to set the standard. Through participation in a variety of quality-improvement initiatives, Dothan Pediatric Clinic enhances their ability to achieve measurable improvements in the health outcomes of children. Now more than ever, patient families have numerous options for where to seek care. Decisions are based, in large part, on relationships with and easy access to providers. As a certified Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home, Dothan Pediatric Clinic coordinates general pediatric care and specialty treatment to ensure necessary care is received when and where it’s needed and in a manner easily understood by parents. To address the growing trend of obesity, the Healthy Active Living for Families program was initiated by the clinic during 2015. Across the wellchild visits between ages 2 to 17, pediatricians and nurse practitioners help parents teach their children healthy guidelines pertaining to nutrition, screen time and physical activity. The network’s Quality Initiative Core Team is working with the Alabama Child Health Improvement Alliance, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Pediatrics and the Alabama Department of Public Health to improve HPV vaccine series initiation and completion. Every 20 minutes of every day in the U.S., one person gets a cancer caused by HPV. Pediatricians know if the HPV vaccine series is completed by age 14, the need for preventable cervical procedures could decrease by 75 percent. The benefits of these initiatives reach across the span of infancy into adulthood and across Dothan, Houston County and surrounding Wiregrass communities. Dothan Pediatric Clinic is focused on helping children, now dependent upon parents and pediatric medicine, to become healthy, independent adults who are prepared to care for a healthier next generation.
