Today’s Objectives 1. What is a floor plan? 2. How to draft a floor plan 3. How are elements depicted in a floor plan? 4. Understand different wall types 5. How to dimension a floor plan 6. Activity

What is a floor plan? •Orthographic view of a building or area within a building •Seen as if a horizontal cutting plane passed through at 4’ above the floor •Most significant architectural drawing •Contains a tremendous amount of information about the design and construction of a building or space •Serves as primary drawing to which other specialty drawings can be keyed •Separate floor plan for each level •Align with bearing walls, stairways, ductwork and other vertical elements •Drawn to scale and detailed to show walls, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, appliances, stairs, cabinetry and other built-in or freestanding interior features •General information and items spelled out in more detail in other drawings •Largest single drawing in a construction set •Placed on sheet by itself

How to draft a floor plan •Drafting standards •Logical sequence •Lay out walls, openings, door swings, fixtures and cabinets •Add dimensions, symbols and other necessary notes •Draw with hierarchy of line weights for emphasis and legibility •Graphic symbols •Door tags •Window tags •Room or area tags •Wall tags •Material tags •Architectural symbols •Columns •Assigned a grid number and referenced to column center line •Section cuts •Elevation markers

How to depict elements in a floor plan •Walls •Interior walls: 5” thick in plan •Exterior walls: 6”-8” thick in plan •Windows •Drawn according to scale and office standards •Doors •Classified by action and whether they are interior or exterior units

Understand different wall types •Wall Types •Represent different wall materials differently graphically •Metal Stud Framing •Made of galvanized steel Available in several thickness options (gages) Heavier gages used for load-bearing partitions, framing door openings or tall partitions Attach studs to a top and bottom metal channel or runner Acoustic Partitions •Interior partitions to modify acoustical and sound transmission Add acoustical insulation (batt, board, blanket, rigid, sprayed) blocks sound STC: Sound Transmission Class Sound rating as established by lab testing higher STC= more sound stopped Fire-Rated Partitions Assembly of materials designed to restrict spread of fire Fire ratings specified in hours IBC specifies requirement for fire rated wall partition types

How to dimension a floor plan •Dimension string •Which dimensions are most critical •Leave last strip open unless it is critical •Start from a fixed point •Columns grid line, exterior wall or column centerline
