TALLGRASS PRAIRIE RETREAT Bowman Design Forum Winner :: Flint Hills, Kansas
Client Intentions :: The client wants to help guests learn how to reconnect with nature, self, and human community. The building and landscape design should support and artistically image the functions of a spiritual retreat and contemplative community. And to create a place for guests to slow down, and drop out of the culture of mindless speed. Monastery Connection :: A monastery is the dwelling place for a community of persons, who live in partial or complete seclusion from secular society. The site of a monastery is intentionally selected to physically separate the place from society and to ensure the safety of its inhabitants. A monastery is typically a cluster of masses, but this design is more interested in a game of planes, representing the evolving, revolving, and embracing of the experience of the Flint Hills, offering a relaxing fluidity of form.
3rd Floor Plan
Embrace & Release :: The geometry of the retreat is two rings; one ring being primarily underground, the other rising above the surface of the Flint Hills. The top ring wraps around the retreat center to create a connection back to the ground. So the site embraces the retreat, the retreat embraces a central courtyard, and the guest is embraced by it all. In addition to the embrace there is a release because everyone relaxes and processes in their own way. A variety of spaces is how this release is achieved; from paths across the entire site, to important points of interest, as well as to guests’ rooms oriented toward either the sunrise or the sunset.

MUSICAL FACADE STUDY Street Dance Studio :: Manhattan, Kansas
Site Analysis :: By analyzing the various elevational differences of the roofs (treble clef) and awnings (bass clef) of the buildings on Poyntz Avenue, the street that the Dance Studio is located along, a song was composed. The sheet music was compounded into a facade design composed of panels that correlate to each note.

BUSINESS INCUBATOR Food Research Laboratory :: Topeka, Kansas
Why Topeka? :: Topeka is the capital of Kansas, a state that exceeds in both agriculture and education, and its capital city should reflect that. The economy is largely supported by the governmental agencies, and lacks a thriving downtown area that cultivates community. Bringing in a food research laboratory that emphasizes smart, healthy crop production and offers up a space for the community to gather and participate in consumption of local foods, the city will thrive. Why this Site? :: This site has prime visual access to I-70 and Kansas Avenue, both of which are major transportation routes. This site exposes itself
N
to the public, and will draw attention to the downtown area. The location is near strong community partners such as Cargill, Harvesters, and local restaurants to help build a strong community. What is the Purpose? :: The purpose is to help make Topeka’s community and economy thrive by building on its strengths of agriculture and education. By implementing a green food research laboratory and experiential center, the opportunity for the city’s advancements would be ripe.

Openness :: This is allowing access to the public. Research no longer must happen “behind closed doors instead demonstration labs are front and center and a fresh food market is located along the ground floor.
Sustainability :: This is the collection of water to maintain the growth of plants on site. The windows also have movable building integrated photo voltaics as sun shades.

4th Floor Plan
Visual Accessibility :: This is accessibility by the public to the research lab is key to promoting downtown Topeka. The prime location off of I-70 allows for free advertising for the building and city.
Growable Area :: This is productive, healthy land. The community garden and roof top planters are oriented to the south to maximize the growable areas.

Past
ONE ARTIST MUSEUM Past & Future :: SOHO, New York
Anselm Kiefer :: A German artist whose work follows a time line of inspiration. His early works were rooted in German history, particularly the Holocaust while his newer works are more universal in nature. Kiefer is a believer in the notion that the past must be truly confronted in order to completely move on into the future. Kiefer’s work often plays with the dichotomy of brutality and fragility both in content and material.

Confrontation :: Just like his art, the architecture needed to be confrontation in nature to stop pedestrians in their tracks, draw them in, and bring about the transition from the past, through the present, and into the future. Contrasts and Correlations :: The art museum is composed of three segments; the past (heavy concrete), the present (glass threshold), and the future (steel and frosted glass). The circulation of the gallery spaces flows between the three phases and incorporates Kiefer’s works based on their themes into each space.

Think Tanks in Kansas
Think Tanks in the U.S.
THINK TANK FOR FOOD SECURITY Global Research & Impact :: Manhattan, Kansas
What is a Think Tank? :: A think tank is a body of experts who provide advice and ideas on specific political or economic problems. Think tanks occur all over the world. The Think Tank of Manhattan, Kansas, is a crossroads between the formal structure of Kansas State University’s campus and the productive landscape of the town. What is Food Security? :: Food security means access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. A food-insecure person is defined as one consuming less than 2100 calories per day due to lack of access. The biggest domestic food production struggle in developing countries is their grain supply. This think tank has been intentionally placed in the heart of Kansas where wheat is the main crop produced and grain science is a focus for local students and experts. Spatial Language :: The project called for a spatial language to be derived from a food; particularly a common grain, my research was on corn. A
Think Tanks in the World
healthy ear of corn is comprised of 800 kernels. These pods are arranged radially around a core. The pods can be aligned in vertical columns, horizontal rows, or independent pieces. The spatial relationship of kernel to cob or pod to core created the over-arching concept of parts to the whole where the sum is greater than its parts. Social and Biological Exchange :: A think tank focuses on a social exchange of information in order to make progress on an issue, but in every social exchange there is also a biological exchange of information. When a person learns something new or makes a mental connection of ideas, the neurons of the brain adapt. An axon fires the information across a synaptic junction to a dendrite where the information is received and interpreted. Taking the pod to core spatial understanding and deploying it to the concept of a neuron in the brain created two towers that programmatically function as the axon and dendrite. A new vertical model was constructed to spare and multiply usable crop land rather than the horizontal model, that builds on usable land.

EUROPEAN STUDIES Study Abroad :: Orvieto, Italy
I was able to study architecture in Italy, one of the most historically rich places. I soaked in the culture of Orvieto, Italy, a town situated on top of a rock of tufa. I enjoyed many long meals, deep conversations, and meandering walks. Along the way I traveled to over 50 cities and 14 other European countries. I had the incredible opportunity to talk to many people and learn new perspectives on politics, humanitarian issues, architecture, and life.
The spare time I had was spent traveling to Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, England, Ireland, Denmark, and Sweden. It was through theses travels that I learned to be bold, think quickly, and be adaptive.

URBAN STUDIES
Internship :: New York City, New York
I was responsible for creating a variety of programmatic and schematic design packages including full renderings. I created a new responsibility chart to clear up communication between the general contractor, landlord, owner, and architect throughout the construction process. I also developed a directory cataloging building metrics for all projects for Warby Parker.
In addition, I worked construction administration on a Penthouse in Central Park West. In California, I worked on schematic design and construction documents for the Flagship store for Black Tux and the Concept Shop for Big Fish Little Fish.

ARTWORK
2D Multi-Media Explorations
Art is important in the second-dimension; it is the precursor to understanding composition of the third-dimension. The top left is a graphite sketch of a compass, the middle left is a photograph of Tadao Ando’s Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, Texas, and competition winner. The middle right is a charcoal rendering of light and shadow in a space, and the far right is
a graphite rendering of Frank Gehry’s Disney Concert Hall. The bottom is a panoramic photograph of Shadow of His Wings Orphanage in Monjas, Guatemala, with a mural designed and painted with the words, “FREEDOM; For who the Son sets free is free indeed. John 8:36.”
