In both the store header and the business card, NexTop Nails uses different typefaces, not keeping the same consistent appearance and design. There is a lack of personality in the chosen typeface of the store header. Another problem that appears is legibility of the business card. There is script, bold, sans-serif and multiple colors used. The alignment could also be improved.

Develop ment

I started with inspiration of this redesigned typeface especially for the Vietnamese alphabet, which possesses a lot of personality and uniqueness. I also studied distinct differences between the a of Didot, Galliard, and Centaur.

I started by sketching numerous different letter forms to get an idea of how my typeface was going to start developing. Using the three adjectives modern, ornate, and feminine, I considered using serifs, high contrast, and some non geometric lines. I studied Didot’s letter measurements and established my own x-height using those measurements. I also compared ratios of height and width of Acrylic to Didot.

Feminine

Refining my sketches helped me develop important aspects of the DNA in my typeface. Ball terminals tend to appear more feminine, along with high contrast of the letters. Also, I used a non-geometric downturn of the crossbar within my majuscules to give my typeface a unique appearance. I realized how important the DNA of one letter was to another, and that they had to be repeated constantly. This made designing the rest of my typeface more organized and professional.

18

Here is a continuation of experimentation on my letterforms. Several ideas were circulating here, such as the crossbar of the minuscule f, the serif of the minuscule k, and the form of the majuscule M. The minuscule x went through multiple refinements to get the final form, while the minuscule m went through several small refinements to get the letterform that was the most successful.

Solution

There were 2 prominent changes I had to make for my minuscule a, those being to decrease the width of the stem, and to change the serif style to match the other minuscules in my set. I decided to keep the bowl of my minuscule a resting slightly beneath the baseline. I used my majuscule B’s serif as a stencil for all of my majuscules so the set would stay consistent. I also narrowed the stem on this majuscule too. This diagram on the next page shows the stages of change that both my minuscule and majuscule went through.

1. The first change I decided to make was to lessen the thickness of the stem. 2. On the second letter form, I noticed an imperfection. I smoothed it out by thickening the outer bowl of the a. 3. Lastly, I changed the bottom serif from a curl to a flat bottom. This helped unite my minuscule a to the rest of my letterforms.

1. In the first majuscule B, I changed the appearance of the top serif. 2. In the next stage, I decided the serif needed to be changed again, so I brought it up to the cap height, but kept the same style serif. 3. The upper bowl seemed to have a wonky imperfection, so I rounded it out more. 4. Here, I decreased the thickness to match it with the thickness of the lower bowl. 5. Lastly, I flattened out the bottom of the bowl to have a better correspondence to the crossbar.

Also included in my final type specimen are three ligatures. These were challenging to create, but overall they gave me a great learning experience.
