You’ll be amazed how green your thumbs are when you grow these vigorous, vibrant flowers. Uses for Superbells® Calibrachoa: Hanging baskets, upright containers, window boxes Care Tips: • Grow Superbells in full sun to light shade. Since they do not like to have wet feet, make sure there is at least one drainage hole in the bottom of your container. • Superbells love to be fed! Feed them with water soluble plant food every third time you water. Also apply slow release fertilizer once in spring and again in midsummer. • In midsummer, trim back the stems by a few inches to encourage them to put on new growth full of new blooms. This will keep them blooming into the fall.

Expert Horticulturalist

& Educational Program Manager As Homestead Gardens’ in-house horticulturist, Nate Powers sees a bright future for gardening. And he should know! Prior to joining Homestead Gardens in 2015 he worked as the director of horticulture for Historic London Town and Gardens in Edgewater. Read why Nate loves plants and wants to help you succeed.

>> Why are you passionate about horticulture? There is something uniquely human about the practice of horticulture; merging science and art using the hands and the heart. I also embrace the fact that you will never know it all. Horticulture is an active, lifelong pursuit which depends on people sharing experiences and learning from each other. My favorite thing about it is the ability to work with, learn from and get to know people through a shared love of plants. >> What is the most common landscaping mistake? I try not to focus on mistakes. Often times “mistakes” are disguised as opportunities to learn more about plants or design. I’ve been known to say that you never truly know a plant until you’ve killed it three different ways. When it comes to landscaping, I encourage people to think in terms of phases and to enjoy the planning and process. No good or great gardens are created, experienced or enjoyed all at once. >> How can Homestead help people create the landscape of their dreams? Homestead has wonderful resources available to assist any and all levels of garden or landscape enthusiasts. First and foremost are the people who work at Homestead. Each and every staff member is an expert in their field and there is always someone available to answer questions. For example, our landscape division is filled with talented,

accomplished designers whose work is installed and maintained by a team of first-class landscape professionals. For the DIY homeowner, our Garden Coach program is a great way to get a personalized landscape consultation. The program allows for in-store or in-home consultations with a designer and/or horticulturist. >> What do you see for the future of horticulture? The future is in the hands of the next wave of horticulturists. I am encouraged by many of the food-based and environmental education movements exposing children to horticulture through elementary school curricula and community engagement. I’d love to see these programs continue, expand and connect with middle and high school STEM programs focusing on horticulture as well. Overall, the future of ornamental and environmental horticulture is dynamic and promising. Never before have we had access to the artistry of such varied and novel plant material. At the same time, we have never had a better scientific understanding of the changing environment and our own impact on it. I believe the field of horticulture is uniquely suited to help balance and address this merger of science and art. Visit Nate and other experts in our store to help create the perfect landscape. 2017 garden & lifestyle

The year is just starting to roll, but it seems like an exciting new era of gardening has begun. With new changes in indoor gardening technology, the backyard and the kitchen counter have a lot in common; they’re both ideal places to grow. It’s becoming easier than ever to grow 365 days-a-year. The top garden trends in 2017 reflect how the clean food movement coupled with consumers’ desire to downsize are redefining gardening for the modern age. Millennials especially demand to know where food comes from and what’s in it. Now more people are growing their own groceries than ever before. Read on for some insight into the top trends for 2017...

peak season

What if we lived in a world where you were in control of the seasons instead of Mother Nature? What would you grow if you had perfect gardening conditions year-round? You don’t have to think too hard. Modern Homesteading makes that world a reality.

Photo courtesy of Proven Winners www.provenwinners.com

The Modern Homesteading department at Homestead Gardens is a curated selection of indoor gardening, hydroponic and aquaponic supplies that allows people to grow regardless of where they live, their age, skill-level and even the weather. New technology makes growing 365 days-a-year easy, affordable and convenient. The department was created just in time for the rise of one of the top garden trends for 2017: peak season.

Indoor gardening is blooming As people look for new, creative ways to eat local, organic food and accommodate their smaller spaces, this once unconventional way of growing is becoming mainstream and destigmatized. Indoor gardening takes on a variety of forms. People can grow in traditional soil, soil-less mediums, in water or in a closed system where plants and fish flourish in one space called aquaponics.

11 inspirations EARLY SPRING 2017

2017 trends While indoor gardens differ depending on the person, space and preference, the benefits of having one are universal. The ability to garden year-round means access to clean, fresh food every season. Whether herbal tea gardens on the window sill, arugula on the kitchen counter or vitamin-packed microgreens in the family room, your garden is only limited by your imagination. In addition to having clean food, an indoor garden helps clean the air in your home. Indoor plants are proven to help rid the air of toxins and improve concentration.

Plant, Pick & Plate Gone are the days where 18 percent of people aren’t gardening because of limited or no outdoor space! New technologies make it easier for those who have downsized or who have trouble gardening outside to continue their favorite activity. We aren’t just talking about the 28 percent of Baby Boomers who grow herbs indoors. Technology is making indoor gardening easier and making indoor gardeners more successful. No matter where you live, it’s always peak season when you’re growing indoors.

tidy gardens

Is it possible to find joy in less? We think so – especially when it comes to the garden! People are taking a page out of the New York Times best-selling guide to decluttering the home from Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Before you panic, tidy gardens are not trimmed hedges and clean corners. Simply, gardening in a tidy manner reflects a global shift toward reduced consumption coupled with finding bliss in what you do, not in what you have.

12 inspirations EARLY SPRING 2017

Tidy gardens are a direct result of a downsizing trend as the U.S. population shifts from suburbs to city living and gardening in smaller spaces. New varieties of dwarf plants and edibles conserve space and produce bountiful harvests. And it doesn’t matter how much space you have! The same principles can be applied to gardens of any size or shape. Like anything, gardens are always evolving. These steps help gardeners simplify with style.

Our picks for a tidy garden:

8 Steps to a Tidy Garden These eight pillars of tidy gardening outline how to best achieve organized bliss in your own slice of paradise:

1

Thin your garden. Get plants under control. Divide, prune and share.

2

Clear out the garden clutter. Get rid of things you don’t need.

3

Keep what you need or love and what loves your garden.

4

Out with the old, in with the new. Purge plants that are past their prime, have outgrown their space or are not thriving.

5

Eliminate harmful synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.

6

Respect your belongings – keep them looking good, pruned, sharpened or tidy.

7

Create boundaries and define spaces. Use stand-out plants or statuary to fill large gaps.

8

Use a restricted palette of plants and hardscaping materials. TIP...Planting in groups of 3 or more creates a more natural look.

Easy-to-grow, low-maintenance container berry plants like those from Bushel and Berry™ make growing fresh fruit simple – and tidy. These compact blueberry shrubs are neater than larger, leggy berry bushes.

Additionally, landscape design services help take tidy gardens to the next level by custom tailoring outdoor spaces to fit both residential and commercial clientele needs. 2017 trends

golden age Prepare for sparkle because gold is the metal of the moment.

Metallic materials and textures have been trending in home décor for years, and 2017 shows them melting into the outdoors as well. When used in the garden, pops of gold warm up spaces and make the outdoors feel like a cozy extension of your home. Bring the color of the moment to your plants and foliage! When it comes to golden plants, the garden just can’t have enough. Try Katsura Japanese Maple, Carex and ‘Forever Goldie’ Arborvitae to help your garden glitter. For the ultimate gold star of the garden, plant a Rising Sun Redbud. The tree lights up any yard with golden yellow leaves that turn incredible shades of orange throughout the seasons.

Greenleaf Nursery

Who says golden foliage has to stay outside? It’s easy to accentuate a golden garden all throughout the home. Incorporate the color of the moment with foliage prints. Hang shining accent pieces in hallways, living rooms or in the kitchen to extend this trend indoors. This magical golden moment is expected to last a decade!

FEED YOUR LAWN… AND YOUR SOIL! INTRODUCING THE ONLY PROGRAM THAT FEEDS BOTH.

Soil is the foundation of long-term, healthy lawns. “The New American Lawn Plan” focuses not only on feeding the “top” of your lawn, like all fertilizers on the market, but, unlike all others, nourishes the soil! Healthy soil is the key to a great looking lawn. Traditional lawn fertilizer programs alone are antiquated! They feed for a short time (usually two months) and deal with the symptoms of poor turf (weeds, disease, etc.) and not the problem (poor soil). In fact, feeding just the lawn every few months is like being on a “sugar” diet, providing a short jolt of energy without yielding sustained health. To make matters worse, lawn fertilizers acidify soil every time they’re used. Lawns must have the correct soil biology (organically-rich, aerated soil with healthy microbial populations) and soil chemistry (proper pH) to thrive. Without this essential balance, nutrients that are in – or added to – your soil are wasted! “The New American Lawn” program changes this old approach by “balancing” the nutritional needs of turf with the proper amount of lawn food and soil food! Yes, that’s right, soil food. Love Your Soil and MAG-I-CAL are the two soil-reviving foods that make “The New American Lawn” truly different from every other lawn program on the market. Love Your Soil organically stimulates soil microbes so they release “trapped” soil nutrients while, at the same time, loosens compacted soil for deeper root growth. MAG-I-CAL adjusts soil pH to insure that nutrients from lawn fertilizers aren’t wasted and the growth of weeds is reduced. “The New American Lawn” also offers consumers Black Beauty, the best grass seed mixtures available on the market today! Remember, a lawn is only as good as the seed it’s started from. Black Beauty grass seed mixes are genetically superior to competitors. Black Beauty varieties root up to 4 feet deep, contain a waxy coating to preserve moisture, and are naturally insect and disease resistant.

Lighting: 101

Proper lighting is key to your indoor garden’s success. Why? Lights replace the sun’s energy by providing your plants crucial elements needed to thrive indoors. The type of lighting you need depends on your space, plants and growing mediums.

Your Burning Questions Answered

1

What kind of lights do I need for my garden?

2

How much light do my plants need daily?

3

How often do I need to replace my lamps?

▷▷

That depends on what you want to grow! Light is measured by different wavelengths on a spectrum. Light that falls on the blue part of the spectrum is best for veggies and edibles. Red or orange light helps flowers thrive. Choose T5 fluorescent tubes if you’re a beginner or propagating seedlings and cuttings. They are less expensive, efficient, cover plants in even lighting and use little energy. Other options include LED’s and high intensity lights.

▷▷

Young plants need 15-18 hours of light. When they start to bloom you can reduce light to 10-12 hours. We recommend using an automatic timer! Place lights 2-4” from young plants. As plants grow, raise lights with them. Plants should be full and leafy, and if they’re not, move lights closer.

▷▷

Bulbs in your lamps typically need to be replaced every six to nine months for optimum grow rates. Replace bulbs if they start to dim.

>> Why are you passionate about growing indoors?

>> How can Homestead help people grow successfully?

When you grow your own food indoors, you are in control of everything! With the right tools and skills, you can grow sustainably, skip the hassle of grocery shopping and eat fresh no matter the season. It’s the future of gardening!

Our Modern Homesteading department is a one-stopshop with a wide selection of products for indoor gardens of any size or shape. However, it’s the expertise and education from industry experts that make the department truly unique.

>> What’s the biggest benefit of gardening indoors? The primary benefit is that an indoor garden is not climate reliant and is adaptible to any size space - from a kitchen counter to the garage. >> Why should people start an indoor garden? Why not dive into a hobby that provides safe, healthy food you and your family love to eat at a lower cost?

>> What does your own indoor garden look like? I grow anything and everything. Tropical shrubs and trees are more my style, but I never say no to a new method or new plant. This year, I grew bonsais. But I also grow all my leafy greens, herbs and veggies indoors, since Maryland’s wild weather patterns make outdoor gardening challenging for a workaholic like me.

Think orchids are high-maintenance? Think again. Orchids are for everyone. Their fabulous blooms last for months and are a stylish reward for keeping your plants healthy year-round. Choose from many varieties, spectacular colors, and exotic shapes to add a trendy accent piece to any indoor spaces. While these beautiful plants are show-stoppers, caring for them doesn’t involve a big production.

“Many people are afraid of orchids. They think that since they’re so beautiful, they must be difficult to maintain. But that’s just not true,” said Beverlee Barthel, Homestead Gardens’ in-store orchid enthusiast. “There are so many different orchid genuses and species, you’re sure to discover one that’s perfect for you.” Since orchids are available in a wide range of colors and shapes, options are endless.

Choosing Your Orchid The first and most important thing to look for when choosing an orchid is overall health. Firm, green leaves that are free of spots, splits or yellowing generally indicate the plant is healthy. Take a peek under the leaves to ensure it is free of fungus and pests as well. Next, consider the structure of the orchid. A plant with many buds with only a few flowers fully opened will provide the longest reward. The rest of the buds will open at home. Finally, let your personal preference come into consideration! Orchids in a single color such as white, pink or yellow provides a simple pop of color. Or, for a more unique look, choose one with expressive splashes of color that contrast – or complete – your décor. “While the most popular colors are lavender and white, the best choice is to go with what you love or what goes best with your home,” Barthel said. “From my experience, yellow seems to have the strongest fragrance.” Once you’ve found the perfect orchid, make sure it gets home safely! Orchids are very sensitive to temperature and only a few minutes in temperatures that are too hot or cold can impact new blooms. So, you won’t want to leave it in the car for very long after purchasing.

Care for Orchids in 5 Easy Steps Now that you’ve chosen the perfect plant, follow these simple tips to keep your orchid thriving and happy for months.

1. A New Home. Orchids prefer bright light, but not direct sun. Avoid cold, drafty spots.

As a general rule of thumb, the goal is for your orchid to sit in water long enough for the growing medium to become fully saturated. We recommend around 10 minutes.

Once saturated, remove from water and allow excess to drain through the drainage holes. If you watered in a decorative pot, make sure to dump the water before replacing the orchid. Water again only when soil is completely dry or the pot feels light.

3. Just right nutrients. Homestead Gardens recommends feeding your orchid with a liquid orchid fertilizer such as Espoma’s Orchid! Bloom Booster or Jack’s Classic Orchid Bloom Booster. Follow instructions on the label.

4. Wait for more blooms. After all flowers have withered, cut the stem back to the base of the plant. Once cut back, your orchid will begin to follow its natural blooming cycle. But be patient! Your orchid’s bloom cycle may have been interrupted during the growing process and it could take awhile for your orchid to correct itself. It is also important to remember that blooming cycles vary by variety.

5. Repot when needed. Orchids generally need to be re-potted

every 2 to 3 years. NEVER re-pot when an orchid is in bloom. The best time to do so is just after flowering, or when new growth appears. Homestead recommends Espoma’s organic orchid potting mix for best results. Homestead Gardens has everything orchid enthusiasts need to help their houseplant thrive. Indoor Plant Specialist Davidsonville

Meet our ‘Orchid Enthusiast’ Beverlee Barthel, and learn why orchids are some of the most rewarding plants to grow.

>> What makes you passionate about orchids?

>> What are your favorite orchid varieties?

Orchids are an exciting plant. There are so many different varieties that I’m still discovering new ones! For me, the passion really took hold when I was able to get one to rebloom. I killed a lot of orchids when I was learning, so now I love teaching others how to grow them and succeed.

That is tough! I love the long, elegant spikes of the moth orchid. My elusive favorite is the rare monkey orchid.

>> Is it easy to grow orchids? It is easy. Orchids look exotic so people mistakenly think they are high maintenance. The three keys to success are to start with a healthy orchid, provide proper lighting and don’t overwater! >> What kinds of orchids does Homestead offer? We are very fortunate to have so many beautiful, unique species. At various times thoughout the year we have selections ranging from the traditional Phalaenopsis to the more unusual Fredclarkeara After Dark. Additionally, we offer customers one-on-one assistance when it comes to selecting the perfect orchid for their home and space. Customers can even call or bring in their orchid when they have questions.

>> Customers get their hands dirty during a repotting workshop!

>> What can people learn from Homestead’s Orchid: 101 Classes? We cover a lot of ground! In our intro classes we cover the basics including: species identification, pot and soil selection, watering and lighting requirements, and fertilization. You’ll learn best practices for getting your orchid to rebloom and even which plants make great companion plants. More advanced workshops provide hands-on instruction on repotting and mounting. When you come to one of our Orchid: 101 classes you’ll leave with confidence to grow. For me, the best reward is when a student tells us their orchid is doing well! Visit Beverlee and other experts in store to help grow your strongest orchid yet. For upcoming Orchids:101 seminars and workshops, visit HomesteadGardens.com/events.

foodscape revolution By: Brie Arthur

Finding a better way to make space for food AND beauty in your garden... Foodscaping is the logical integration of edibles in a traditional ornamental landscape, container, or patio. It is a design and growing strategy that makes the most of the square footage that you have access to. I’m not suggesting everyone “become a farmer” by digging up the front yard – far from it. Through foodscaping, you can harness the sunny open mulch space that’s already in a prime spot and add your favorite edibles such as basil, carrots, eggplant, kale and tomatoes. Did you know the average suburban foundation landscape – the landscape around the house – offers open mulch space equivalent to 1,250 sq ft, or 48 average sized 4x8 raised beds? That’s a lot of edible potential! Any sunny area can be foodscaped – even if you’re living in a townhome or condo with only a deck or front porch. This open space often has irrigation installed or, at the very least, is close to a water source. This is ideal for the foodscaper, since the closer to your home you can grow vegetables, the better you’ll be able to care for them. And because you’ll be growing seasonal annual vegetables, if your life circumstances change you are not stuck with abandoned garden space for weeds to take over. The Foodscape Revolution is all about being practical with the land that you cultivate so that you can enjoy an authentic “yard to table” experience.

Visit Homestead Gardens for everything you need to maximize your landscape’s edible potential. Brie Arthur is leading the national suburban Foodscape movement; a model of community development that incorporates sustainable, local food production. She is a correspondent on the PBS television show Growing A Greener World. Her book ‘The Foodscape Revolution’ will be available spring 2017 at Homestead Gardens.

Homestead’s landscape team worked hard to help transform The Summit School in Edgewater as part of the Built Upon a Dream program.

Homestead in the communit y Rooted in a long tradition of giving back,

Homestead Gardens is committed to strengthening and building community based organizations and local leadership. Our strategic focus is partnering with local charities that have a positive impact on the environment, healthcare, childrens’ needs and promoting the arts in our community.

Since 1973, Homestead Gardens has supported over 100 non-profit organizations, civic associations and schools in the community each and every year. In addition to monetary contributions, Homestead donates items for auctions and raffles, flowers and plants for fundraising events, as well as landscaping and marketing assistance. Homestead uplifts numerous community non-profits annually with their fundraising efforts by providing free space, décor, marketing and logistical support and staff, thus allowing these groups to dedicate the majority of the monies raised to their deserving cause.

As animal lovers, we believe in humane care for animals in need. That is why we partner with SPCA of Anne Arundel County to raise funds through various events throughout the year.

Homestead’s Landscape Division gave the circle planting in front of Paul Bunyan at AACo Fairgrounds a much needed upgrade. The new garden is pollinator friendly, featuring plants to attract butterflies and bees.

We are a proud sponsor of Anne Arundel County Medical Center’s annual fundraiser Denim & Diamonds. Funds raised at this year’s bash on April 29 will help to expand mental healthcare at AAMC.
