Could We Be Heroes They say, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” While that may be true, I have decided what doesn’t kill you makes you want a vacation really, really badly. The past few months has been quite an epic journey, but if you’re reading this then you know that not only did the 10th edition of the Look Book get completed but we have transformed our store in order to offer our customers more room, more shoes, and more comfort while trying on comfortable shoes. Let’s start with our fabulous overhaul of the store space. Have you ever been so consumed and busy with things that when people ask you, “How have you been?” you don’t miss a beat and say, “busy!” Of course, “busy” isn’t an answer and out of respect you try to expound a bit on your answer by listing off some of the things that have been consuming your time. It is amazing how quickly time passes and how the stress of “busy” can bog you down. I’m one of those people that sometimes, ok well often, has trouble starting projects that have unfamiliar starting points. Fortunately, my boyfriend doesn’t. At the end of January, James asked me when we were doing the remodel of the store that I had been talking about for a year. I said, “I don’t know, we need to do it soon. I’ve just been too busy to figure out how to start.” For 15 months we had talked about renovating. Even though I had created a design for what we wanted the store to look like, I just wasn’t sure what to do next. Later that very day, James texted me, “there’s a builder coming to your store at 12:30pm” and after 15 months of talking about it we were off to the races. Ryan, from Ensign Building Solutions, came to take a look at the store and talk about what we wanted to do. James had gotten to know Ryan from work Ensign had done for Brewer Home Team real estate clients in the past, making it an easy recommendation. We knew that if we didn’t do the renovations in February, there would be no way to do them again for a year. My parents and I talked about it and knew things had to be done. One of our biggest fears was the prospect of having to be closed for the period of renovations. Ultimately, Ensign presented us a plan to get the work done at night with as little discomfort as possible while staying open. Not only did we want to update the look of the store, but we have been growing so much that we desperately needed more space. To create this additional space, we decided to move the wall back 10 feet into the stock room and get rid of the front stage. This gave us almost 200 more square feet in the showroom. We wanted to declutter, brighten things up, and have more space to show off our products.

Now onto our 10th edition of the Look Book. It has been very rewarding to see the reaction of people from book to book. The first book was printed at home. We made about 30 copies and found it to be a great tool to help people see that what we have to offer is more than just shoes that can be comfortable, but also fashionable. Over the past 5 years and now 10 editions I’ve had so much fun exploring new content to put in the book. It’s been a real honor to get to know some of our customers on an even deeper level with the interviews we stared in the fall of 2016. A big thank you to all that have participated and to my father who has done all the photography for all our Look Books. The fall 2016 book was also the first time I did the “Springboards.” Our first partner clothing store was Potpourri and later Mode Marche joined with us to offer a more personal approach for showing inspiring looks. A very big thank you to them. If you haven’t already, please be sure to check out their shops, you won’t be disappointed. Much has changed over these past 5 years, but our mission to be more than just a shoe store stays the same. You can buy shoes anywhere, it’s our knowledge that is the free gift with purchase. I had no idea that there was so much to know about shoes. Shoes can be rated on a spectrum from being functional by helping you walk or fix a problem, to purely fashionable, like the Christian Louboutin ballet point stiletto. However, there is so much in between. I would say that almost all of us live somewhere in that middle part of the spectrum. There are so many options in that middle that is sometimes hard to find what is the right spot for each of us. Archeologists tell us that people have been wearing shoes for around 40,000 years. For most of that time shoes really only had one main job, protecting the feet and helping us walk. It wasn’t until the 1600’s that style played a major part in footwear trends. It wasn’t until the 1830’s that men’s and women’s shoes started looking different. At that time men’s shoes settled into the dress shoe styles we are so familiar with today. Oxfords, and later, loafers have dominated the men’s footwear scene. It was 1935 when the boat shoe first appeared and since then men have been stuck in them. For those men that love their boat shoes, this season we have a cool new twist on that menswear staple from Samuel Hubbard, the Camplight. Make sure to check out these fabulous shoes. After World War II, women’s shoes changed and varied drastically. Many of these changes were precipitated by woman’s participation in the work force. As their participation rose, so did the heels on their shoes. In the 1950’s we saw the introduction of the stiletto heel. In hindsight, I find it a bit sad that this style of shoe named after a Sicilian fighting knife, would be as damaging to women as getting into a knife fight. The stiletto not only changed the future of women’s feet but changed the image of what people considered feminine. Pain equals beauty and comfort equals ugly. Or does it? Each year, roughly 23 billion pairs of shoes are produced around the world. Yes, that’s billion, with a “B.” With a global population of around 7.6 billion people, there are more than one or two folks with a shoe obsession. In the year 2018, you’d have a hard time throwing a rock and not hit a place that sells some sort of footwear. That does not even include all the options online. Access to global goods is at an all-time high, and isn’t it wonderful? With so many options, a vast difference in prices, ever changing trends and tastes, how and why do we make the selections that we do, as individuals. With all of these choices how does one make the best choice to take care of our bodies and look and feel great?

Can you remember the last time someone measured your feet, other than in our store? When did shopping become such a self-service industry? Let’s be honest, most of the time when you go to the mall you either have too much help, they stalk you like you’re going to rob the place, or you have an actual question and can’t find an answer. With shoes particularly, we tell the clerk “I wear an eight.” When they bring you your selection in an eight, and if it slips a little, you ask for a seven and a half. Wearing the wrong size t-shirt may just look silly but it won’t hurt you. Poorly fitting footwear can cause actual problems. Each day I come to work and meet people on a quest to find the best blend of function and fashion that they can have. Sure, many people first come to us because they are trying to fix a problem, but we hope you find more than just a shoe or an insert to solve a problem but rather a Hero to guide you on your quest for fit, function, and fashion. Our goal at Foot Solutions is to curate a collection of products that stand up to our motto of “Fit. Function. Fashion.” Every shoe here earns its place, some more toward the function side of the spectrum and others totally in the fashion side. To earn a place in our store a shoe should be well made and constructed from the best materials for its category. When you buy something here, we want it to perform as advertised. We try to have lots of shoes that are adjustable, with removable inlays and secure closures. Put simply, we want what we sell to help people live their lives. The chance to really help people is fun, interesting, and rewarding. I often tell people that I had no idea my feet hurt until my parents bought a shoe store. When I discovered what footwear could do for me, I felt like my world opened up to an entirely new way of looking at shoes. The truth is that it is so much fun to break free from the trap of convention and try something new. Sure, there may be reasons you need something more on the function side of the spectrum, but maybe it is time to have a little fun. No worries because in each category for each need we try to give the very best options of fashion available. It may not be easy for you to take the plunge, but we will jump with you. If you’ll let us, we stand ready to be the Hero on your quest for fit, function, and fashion. I’m so pleased to bring you this 10th edition of INSPIRE; a seasons guide to ready to wear fashion. May this season of your life be beautiful, full of joyful clothing, happy feet, and lots and lots of color.

olor continues to be a powerhouse and a key influencer of fashion trends for Spring 2018. In response to the consumers continued embrace of color, designers are recognizing the need to show more color in their collections. Highlighting a more multi-faceted color story that expands the opportunity for self-expression, the PANTONE® Fashion Color Trend Report for Spring 2018 features the top 12 colors for men’s and women’s fashion. In another first, the PANTONE Fashion Color Trend report spotlights four classic colors, a family of color that transcends the seasons and provides structure to any wardrobe. The desire for colorful self-expression is a key take away for Spring 2018. The color story is wildly divergent and we see a kaleidoscopic bounty of uplifting shades and feel-good tones. There is a feeling of optimism and confidence driving a new vitality into fashion trends. That doesn’t mean that we don’t continue to look for more neutral or classic shades. These core basics are seasonal essentials, work well on their own as well as providing the landscape for the color complexity. Along with this recognized freedom to explore and experiment with more color and fashion, the people who interact with it no longer want to feel limited by traditional color guidelines. Gender and seasonal borders continue to be non-issues when it comes to color. Untypical spring shades that make for complex and original combinations, communicates the consumer’s desire to experiment with color all year round without any restrictions. The color story for Spring 2018 is a perfect reflection of this new sentiment..

It wasn’t a mistake having so many white pants in this book. We have been on a trend toward more and more white for the better part of three years now. If you’re late to this party, don’t fret. You will not stand out, you will blend right in. People shy away from white, saying, “It looks great on other people.” Be brave, have fun and don’t be deterred by feeling like you have put yourself out there. This Hinson Wu top is probably my favorite article of clothing in the book. I love it so much I got it for my mom. The fine details and the material are second to none. Oh Desigual how much I love you. Your prints are so cheerful, your materials so feminine. Florals are huge these days. Pattern or larger print, you’ll do well to let your garden grow and harvest delight this summer. Again, white pants will never lead you down the wrong path. Bad Shoes Ruin Lives
When I first met Brian Riggs, I owned one pair of shoes. Just one! It was a red canvas slip on I had bought for 12,000 Korean Won on sale about a year previously (that’s around $10). There was a hole in the toe and the red had become less Crayola and more dried blood. I had never really thought about the shoes I wore; even as an adult I still imagined shoe shopping as a chore since I just needed something that worked. The funny thing about that was, as I learned, my cheap clearance shoes never truly worked… In 2009, I began running cross-country with my high school and began to suffer pretty severe knee and hip pain. It would get to the point where I would feel like I couldn’t stand. Imagine how successful I was at running when I could barely remain upright. I saw my family doctor, who ran some tests and referred me to a heart doctor, who ran some more tests and referred me to a geneticist, who ran some more tests and concluded there was nothing wrong with me! Back to my family doctor, he advised me simply “don’t do it if it hurts”. Well, that was the end of my cross-country career. Fast forward to 2013, after I graduated from Liberty University with a four-year degree in teaching English as a second language, I spent four years living in South Korea as a preschool teacher. I lived in Seoul, the capital city, just 50 miles south of the DMZ between North and South Korea. This shoe story, however, finds us abroad and on a budget. I had taken a vacation to Vietnam, just a quick flight across the Yellow Sea. My primary vehicle for getting around was, you guessed it, a pair of cheap slip ons. The trip was a whirlwind beginning in Hong Kong. During the layover I took the ferry to Macau and back. I then flew to Thailand and ended up in Cambodia. From there I bussed all through the country, seeing three different cities and ending up in Da Nang, Vietnam. If you haven’t been to South East Asia I highly recommend it; I had a reservation at a beachfront resort where for less than the cost of a suite in a US hotel, I rented an entire house with a pool, on the beach. In addition to its gorgeous beaches, Vietnam has culture and history. During the days I visited the popular tourist destinations and by night indulged in cocktails with other travelers and friendly locals. One morning however,

“ B a d s h o es ru i n l i v es ” C o nt i n u e d my trip took an unfortunate turn, on the uneven concrete ubiquitous in so many less developed countries, my cheap slip-on sneakers failed to hold me upright and I came crashing to the ground. I actually ended up falling into a parked motorcycle so I scraped up the whole side of my body, injured my hand and wrist trying to break my fall, and of course rolled my ankle. That experience brought my trip to a disappointing end as I spent the remainder of it recovering from the fall. Jump ahead to 2017. My four years abroad were time well spent. I traveled all around South East Asia. With my 3rd nephew on the way, it was time for me to return to the USA. I made a few stops on the way back. One favorite was in Taiwan, where I spent a week cycling down the beautiful East Coast of the country. The views were vast and the people we met were the kindest I’ve met in all of my travels. From Taiwan I flew to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is still actively rebuilding after their 30-year civil war ended in 2009. I swam with sea turtles and rode motorbikes through the country visiting the historic monuments still standing. By night in youth hostels I would socialize with other travelers sharing stories. One evening talking to some folks there, my friend and I decided to take a detour and go on a hike up Adam’s Peak. The top of Adam’s Peak is believed to be the home of the sacred footprint of Adam, where he took his first step after being cast out of the Garden of Eden. The journey is a short 6 hours of stair climbing followed by 6 hours of stairs down. All told, the journey is over 10,000 stairs. It was the highest place I have ever been and a truly beautiful experience. Atop the mountain, the sun began to climb over the horizon, it was so beautiful I hardly noticed how much I hurt all over. I could barely walk for the following week. I felt like my feet could have been bleeding and my knees were going to snap out from under me like cheap grocery store toothpicks. You might wonder what hiking boots I wear for the climb? None, I climbed that mountain in the same pair of red canvas slip-on shoes that brought me back home. Traveling these parts of the world was truly eye-opening because it allowed me to see the standard of living and the things I take for granted. I believe it helped shaped me into the relaxed and laid-back person that I am now. Owning good shoes has also been an eye-opening experience, as I think back on the strain I put on so many parts of my body. How many days of exploring were missed for recovery? Now I live in the land of wonderful, strong shoes, and I can say that I am constantly (and comfortably) on my feet. No longer are the days of joint pain that followed me from high school until my shoe enlightenment. Even standing for long periods of time would cause my knees and hips to hurt. What might things have been like had I owned a great pair of running shoes and inserts during high school or walking all over Vietnam? What I know now is that since I’ve started wearing quality footwear, I haven’t experienced any of the knee or hip pain I used to, and while I haven’t been back to Asia yet, I’m looking forward to climbing Mt. Rinjani with some great shoes.

A Little More Grace One thing I really enjoy about working in our store is meeting and getting to know so many men and women from our area who have such varied backgrounds and stories. Every day I learn about the lives of a wide variety of people, including authors, teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, seamstresses, artists, homemakers, janitors, and pastors to name a few. I love hearing your stories while we work to find just the right solutions for your particular need. I do laugh, though, when I consider some of the phrases I hear most. They come out of the mouths of all types of people no matter the age, gender or background. The number one phrase is “I don’t want to wear ‘old lady’ or ‘old man’ shoes.” Not too surprising is the fact that the second most repeated phrase I hear is “I don’t want to look like I’m trying to look too young.” And don’t think this only comes from women. Men are just as concerned with these same issues. So then, it begs the question, “How do we want to look?” I am reminded of the children’s story of The Three Bears. The baby bear’s soup, chair and bed were all “just right”. Of course, that’s what we want. To be and to look “just right”. Thankfully, that appears to be a very different look for each of us. It never ceases to amaze me how one customer can completely dismiss one style as “old lady” and the next person, who may even be younger, will choose that exact style as the favorite. It would be pretty horrible if we all liked the same things. What a boring world it would be. And I don’t believe for one minute anything a person says after they tell me they just don’t care what they look like anymore. That may be the number three phrase I hear most often. But I know that we really all care more than we like to admit. Why is that? How can the fear of anyone’s slight disapproval in an item of clothing or a hairstyle wreak such havoc on us as to override our own very real likes and dislikes? Acceptance and love are, as we know, among some of our top needs after physical basics for survival. Granted, this is a first world issue, as they say. We are a blessed nation to be allowed to give thoughts to these kinds of things every day. But we are and there is no wrong in it to a certain point. The styles we choose are an expression of who we are and we don’t have to dress our age as much as we should dress our style.

“ A l i t t l e m o r e g r a c e ” C o nt i n u e d Things are changing. “The 50 plus age demographic is wealthy, vast and growing, and marketers would be smart to take notice.” says Mark Bradbury of The Huffington Post. No generation has had the kind of opportunity we have to drive the market the way we do. So why, then, do we worry so about looking young or looking old? We are experienced and self-assured in many other areas of life yet we seem to melt into a puddle of fear when it comes to fashion. I include myself in that statement but I am hoping to change some of that. One of the greatest things I see as I work with you is seeing some of you possess a clear view of your style, likes and dislikes and the ability to wear it confidently. I am only just realizing how important it is to be comfortable with ourselves and how we look. It’s a little like looking at your own photograph. Have you ever really thought about why we almost always cringe when seeing ourselves in photographs? Have you considered that a photograph is a real image whereas what we see in the mirror is a flipped image. How scary is it to realize that the only time we see ourselves as others see us is in the photograph! The mirror is only for ourselves. Then once you dismiss a photo as terrible, someone else will tell you it looks great. Another thing I know about photography, because my husband is a photographer, is that being self-conscious and fearful of being photographed is the death knell of any opportunity for achieving a good result. Relaxed and confident is always the winning approach. And if you can’t quite achieve confidence, being able to think of something other than the camera will produce amazing results. I’m learning that the same is true in life. The person who is confident in their style is viewed as beautiful. And if you can’t be really confident, then thinking about something other than your appearance has about the same effect. Confidence in aging should be easier now than ever because there are just so many of us! Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just readjust our thinking to actually embrace and enjoy our maturity? I do know, however, that wrinkles are just so much nicer on someone else’s face than my own. When I am before the mirror each morning I can find so many flaws. But, happily, once the day’s work begins there’s just not enough time to think about that any more. Rather than worrying about being age appropriate, it might be better to try being self-appropriate. If you can wear it confidently, then wear it and enjoy. I have been looking at blogs and websites lately for women of “a certain age” and am struck by how different the styles can be and still all be great. They are not all for me but they are perfect for some. As I read advice on improving your style as you age, some of the suggestions given are very similar from many different sources.

l. Attend first of all to your health and fitness as much as possible. 2. Use more skin products than make up. 3. Have a basic wardrobe that includes some timeless pieces that suit your style and fill in with touches of trendy styles as an accent. Then get a full-length mirror, admire your style, and go out confidently, knowing that our age is an outward sign of all the wisdom and experience we possess. A designer I admire, Carolina Herrera, gives us two important lessons. She says that “confidence in your appearance and an air of contentment even in an octogenarian looks decades younger than a hipster trying too hard to be chic.” Also, “how you feel about yourself is more important than how you look.” My mother always said she wanted to grow old gracefully and she really did. When I think of what that means, I realize that in order to do that, I must increase in grace as I age. The dictionary definition of grace explains that grace is: simple elegance or refinement of movement and courteous goodwill. I believe I will spend some time thinking about that. It’s fun to enjoy pretty things and develop our own style and appearance, but in the end, I hope as I continue to mature, I will move with more refinement. After giving myself grace before that full-length mirror, I will walk away into each day ready to give grace as well as receive it.

Make a statement Three years ago, I bought my mother a necklace and earring set from Lorren Bell. This was long before we started carrying his line and my mother had never been one for big jewelry. Finally Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to convince her to wear it and she has gotten more compliments on it than she would have ever imagined. This season is the season to try some statement jewelry. Large statement jewelry is fun! It is one very easy way to be expressive without having to shop for a whole new look. Something as simple as a great necklace or large bangle can really change things up. Breath life into your current look, having fun with accessories. I am also a huge fan of scarves. They are an incredible and simple way to add interest without getting too far out of your comfort zone. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget broaches, tassle earrings, and of course, shoes! I assure you, people will compliment you, and we all love that.

Surgery Or Ugly Shoes. I Don’t Think! So
How did he know I was a ballerina? That was the question running through my mind while the orthopedic surgeon was holding my hurting feet. He said he knew because of my crazy bunions, neuromas, and severe plantar fasciitis. My toes were crossing and walking was becoming a chore. He told me that I could get surgery, but that it would not help. He asked me to wear “practical shoes” and stretch, but that it would probably get to the point where running shoes would be my best friends. I left the office quickly so I did not get sick in his office. I COULD NOT and I WOULD NOT wear tennis shoes for the rest of my life. A horrible flash of memory came to me about the Christmas when my sister-in-law showed up in size 11 (men’s) tennis shoes because her feet hurt so badly and she needed space for her bunions. She had on a velvet dress and what looked like clown shoes. I was not going to end up like this. I am a professional who loves color and style and I need to dress appropriately. I need to look tasteful. How could I do that with the ugly shoes I was being told would be my best friends? About a week later, fate stepped in on my way to get my daughter’s uniform at the Buckhead Uniform store. Foot Solutions was right next door and the shoes looked…well…cute! I did not hesitate and was welcomed by Marsha and Brian who took great care of me and showed me my first pair of Think! shoes. And they had so much color!! It was love at first sight. The toe box was wide for my size 10 1/2 foot (plus bunion). I bought two pairs the first day and it was not long before my pain went away. At this point, I am so used to comfortable, fashionable shoes that I do not even look at shoes in other stores. If I do, it is only to see the style so I can show Brian. He can always find a Holly friendly version that is comparable in look but more comfortable. The shoes I buy at Foot Solutions are better made and more tasteful than any shoe I see anywhere else. One day I started wondering if all my shoes looked the same since many of them were the same brand (Think!). Marsha suggested I pull them all out and look at them. Were they the same? Absolutely not!! I have merlot booties, green flats, cognac tall boots, deep red dress shoes, and the new Gabor red sandals. I have shared my love of Foot Solutions with my husband (he lovesThink! and Fluchos) and my daughters. Good shoes now mean good feet for them later. I often find my daughters fighting over their latest find. In fact, my youngest has shoes she wears to school daily with her school uniform. My sisters live out of state and often call Brian with shoe questions and eventual buying of life changing shoes. The best part of my journey of feet healing and finding Foot Solutions is that now I have new friends. Marsha and Brian continue to offer styles, ideas, and comfort that is unparalleled and Christine and Kate add smiles to my day and have become style mavens for my daughters. As a psychologist, I see children, teenagers, and adults all day long. Color Outside The Lines Spring is my favorite season. I get to break my sundresses out of hibernation, the temperature is comfortable enough for an afternoon stroll, and the world is full of color. One of my style resolutions this year has been to incorporate more color into my wardrobe. For years my closet was nothing but black and denim, with the occasional white stripe tossed in. Neutrals are of course safe, and a tonal outfit can be a sharp look. However, a closet full of black, white, and taupe can eventually feel monotonous. Color adds interest and is just plain fun. A simple way to ease yourself into wearing more color is to wear a neutral outfit with a bright-colored shoe. Try a white t-shirt and jeans with a vibrant lace-up in cherry or sunny yellow, earthy tones and khakis with strappy sandals in teal or brick, and make a statement in a black dress or suit with fiery red dress shoes. Go one step further and pair your tonal ensemble with multi-colored sandals or shoes with a vivid pattern. Match your accessories to your shoes for an extra pop of color. The next step is to start thinking of gentle colors as neutrals. Blush, peach, and navy are easy to pair with other shades. My personal favorite color combination this season is yellow and blue. Use navy, ocean, and cornflower blue to allow shades like meadowlark and mustard to shine. Blush can be worn with just about anything you would pair with grey. Pastel hues such as sage green, petal pink, lavender, and peach beautifully compliment more dynamic tones. If you are apprehensive about trying a bold tint like ultra violet or chartreuse, use a lighter neutral like misty grey or sand to balance it out. Red (and all of its variations) is the most versatile color. Depending on the shade, it effortlessly goes with black, brown, navy, beige, and white. I pick out a new red shoe for myself every season. It makes a striking statement when worn with neutrals, and is easy to coordinate with other colors. Keeping warmer and cooler shades together is safest. Try crimson and rust with brown and khaki, and burgundy and wine with blues and black. As an added bonus, it has been scientifically proven that wearing red makes others more attracted to you. Once you begin to feel more comfortable with color, bring in the patterns. Florals are a go-to for spring, and are easy to match with bright colors. Try a flowery dress with sandals featuring analogous colors. Tops featuring black and white or navy and white stripes are great with pants and skirts in

Plaid has been a staple for all genders for years, and has gradually become more prominent during the warmer months. A lightweight plaid button-down with jeans and sneakers is a classic look. Go bold with sneakers in a unique shade like pine green or ocean blue, or opt for a more neutral color like cognac or the very popular optic white. As with everything, the most essential element when experimenting with color and patterns is confidence. Obviously wearing brighter tones will draw more attention, but too often we convince ourselves that all attention is negative. I cannot count the number of times that a customer has hesitantly purchased a shoe from us that is outside of their comfort zone, then returned to excitedly tell us how many compliments they received. It goes without saying that a good majority of our clients are self-conscious about their feet. Remember that you are your own harshest critic. No one else is going to notice your “chubby” ankles, bunions, or that little toe that crosses over a bit as much as you do. The person that you think is judging your perceived flaws also has their own imperfections that they hope others do not see. A phrase that I wish everyone (including myself) could erase from our lexicon is, “That looks good on them, but not on me.” Why do we enjoy bolder styles on others, but not ourselves? A couple months ago I bought my mother her first pair of jeans. Yes, she somehow managed to live through the 60s and 70s without ever possessing denim. Her reasoning was that she “could not pull it off.” I am sure that sounds familiar to everyone reading this. Naturally she felt even less confident about “pulling them off” at her age. She told me that she was “too old” and “would look like she is trying too hard,” which I am sure also strikes a chord with some of our customers. On the contrary, supposedly “youthful” styles actually do make you look younger! In the case of my now more adventurous mother, they made her feel younger too. She even recently sported skinny jeans with a lovely floral embroidery at our most recent lunch outing. If you have an insecurity you just cannot overcome, opt for strategically placed straps and adjustability instead of dooming yourself to a plain, heavy shoe. A perk of working with us is that we specialize in overcoming discomfort and fitting difficulties. Warmer weather means our feet can have more freedom, so let us help you achieve that freedom! In an effort to hide our imperfections, we can sometimes overcompensate and hide our positive attributes. The same applies to clothing. If you are self-conscious about your hips, wear a slimmer cut pant or a midi skirt to show off your relatively slimmer legs instead of hiding behind loose-fitting clothing. If you are unhappy about your midsection, opt for a high cut waist that becomes looser on the bottom and snugger pants to highlight the other parts of your figure. Think of redirecting the eye, not covering up. Obviously gaining the confidence to wear more daring styles will not happen overnight, but you will be amazed at how far you can come by pushing yourself little by little. The key is to ignore that voice in the back of your mind that says, “What will everyone think?,” because as Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.”

In celebration of your 10th edition of INSPIRE, we’ve included a few things from previous books that people seemed to enjoy. In the fall 2015 edition I included a worksheet to help people get their closets more organized, weed out the old stuff, and a few of my tips for making shopping more fun.
1 Preparation This process should be fun! To ensure maximum enjoyment, make sure to put a smile on your face and a drink in your hand. (See Page 59)
2 Purge! Cosmo in hand, head to the closet. No matter how big the closet is, it always seems full, right? Make 3 piles. One, "love it, keep it, I wear it." Two, "I don't wear it but I'd like to." Three, "give away." If you haven't worn it in more than a year, it is probably safe to get rid of it. If you haven't worn it in 10 years, it's gotta go! If you haven't worn it in 30 years... It might actually work again.... but probably not. Ahhh! Doesn't that feel better?
3 Mix-n-Match It's easier than it sounds. Once you get the ball rolling, things fall into place. With your fully charged iPhone, open the camera. Lay out your favorite outfits, one by one, including shoes and accessories and snap a photo. For best results, make sure there's plenty of light. Yes, this works with other brands of phones ;)
4 Identify Your Favorites Ever feel like you're always wearing the same things? Take a look through what's left. Let's find some patterns. Are all your favorites the same color, material or cut? Knowing your favorite cuts for separates is useful. It makes shopping easier later. So lets make a list for easy access later! Also, it helps to know sizes for specific brands or cuts within a brand when you head to the mall.

5 Missing Something? Now the real fun begins! There are probably some holes in your wardrobe. Look at the pile of things you wanted to keep which didn't have a pairing. What pieces had only one or two matches? Is there an outfit that is just missing shoes or accessories? Take another look through this book. Check out the Springboards as well as articles by Kate and Christine about accessories and color. See what you love and what might work with what you already have. Lets make another list. 6 Time to go to Foot Solutions! Phone in hand, with your pictures, let’s look at the holes in your shoe wardrobe. Let us help with ideas and new styles. It amazes me how a fun new shoe can, by itself, make so many of the outfits already in your closet look and feel new. Despite our name, Foot Solutions, we do actually know more about fashion and making it work for you than one would expect.
7 Brian’s Shopping Bible Since we got your shoe situation all figured out for the season, the only thing left to do is head to the mall and finish up your clothes. Whether you dread the mall or can't wait to go back, here are a few tips to make your trip a little more fun. Rule #1: When you're trying something on, don't cower in the mirror. Having taken countless people shopping, I find that when someone is trying something on, they almost always slouch. When trying on something outside of your comfort zone, stand tall and smile. You wouldn't slouch like that in public. Rule #2: If it ain’t pretty, hide it. I've borrowed from my parents' years of experience in the photography industry, Let me explain. You've found the perfect pair of shoes for the season, at Foot Solutions Sandy Springs, of course. As perfect as the shoes are, the pants you normally wear just won't work. So you try on new skinny jeans or some leggings that are almost perfect, but you're not thrilled with the muffin top result... Time to find a long shirt! The right length top can make things you've always avoided suddenly work. Rule #3: Shop for one category at a time. Few people like to stay at the mall for hours on end shopping for clothes. While I always keep my eyes open for an off schedule find, I like to shop for one section of the wardrobe per trip. If I'm looking for pants, I wear a shoe that's easier to get off and on, skip the button fly, empty my pockets and wear one of my favorite tops. Wearing a button up shirt when shopping for tops saves your hair at least 2 mess ups from your own clothes per dressing room. Rule #4: Carefully Select a shopping buddy. This is crucial if you expect shopping success. Many people that have a great sense of personal style aren't very good about helping others craft theirs. Choose someone that doesn't make you feel vulnerable. You probably know if your daughter will be the right choice... Try on everything you take to the dressing room AND show it to your buddy. Even if you think something is totally wrong, it might end up being just what you've always wanted. Rule #5: Most importantly, don't forget your tools, including this book. My hope is for it to be helpful for more than just showcasing our excellent shoes. If you've read this far, hopefully you will have written your list on the previous page. I'm sure I'm not the only one that forgets what they are looking for after 5 minutes at the mall. Good luck and have fun!

Love, Love Love, this jacket. This look just makes me happy. The stripes are a perfect thickness. The detailing is over the top. The ties on the sleeves, the drawstring, and the feeling of the material make this a must have. You can’t see much of the shirt under the jacket, but it too is quite special. With so many great details, you might think this is over the top, but it just makes things pop. The cobalt pants would be a great staple for seasons to come.

Accessorize the Outfit You’ve Got Do you ever feel like you’re in a bit of a rut style-wise? Almost like you’ve been wearing a uniform. You’ve bought the same wardrobe pieces in the same colors for years. Whenever you do branch out style wise, you go for a neutral color - black goes with everything right? For years I’ve essentially worn a uniform of blue jeans and tops that were either white, black, or some shade of grey. Every now and then I’d get crazy and buy something taupe, or maybe a muted, mossy green if I was feeling very brave, but that was about the extent of my ventures — until I bought a bright red purse that changed my life. I know that sounds like a little bit of an exaggeration to say a purse changed my life, but it did really change my whole style. It introduced me to the magical world of accessories. Color has always been one of my biggest fears. Ok, so not literally… Spiders, sharks, and snakes definitely come before my fear of color, but it’s still there. That’s pretty much the only area of fashion (and it’s a pretty big one at that), that I was hesitant to venture into. Starting with accessories made it so much easier to dip my toe into the world of color. It was absolutely nerve wrecking waiting for the purse to arrive. I kept praying that I hadn’t just spent that much money on something I’d never even walk out of the house carrying. When it finally came in, all of my fears were dispelled. I was head over heels as soon as I took it out of the box. Every other purse I own was immediately forgotten about and nothing else left the house on my arm for the rest of the summer and fall. As Carrie Bradshaw would say, “Maybe the best we can do is to not quit, play the hand we’ve been given, and accessorize the outfit we’ve got.” That turned into my new approach to life and my style in particular. I made the most of the outfit I had. Scarves quickly became an obsession, along with statement jewelry.

“ a c c es s o ri z e t h e o ut f i t y o u ’ v e got ” C o nt i n u e d The best thing about using accessories to update your style, is that you don’t have to buy a completely new wardrobe - just go for a more daring accessory. If you’d normally get the black leather purse, get the same purse, but in red. Go for a brighter shade of lipstick than you’d normally get. Buy that shiny silk scarf that catches your eye. If a bright color feels like a bit much for a particular accessory, look for an interesting texture. Whether its fringe, a straw hat or purse, or a scarf with little tassels around the edge, a little texture can spice up any outfit. Another option is to substitute a metallic for your go to neutral; if you usually wear a lot of grey and black, get a silver shoe. If you usually wear white and tans or khaki shades, go for a belt that is gold or champagne. That’s been my strategy when it comes to updating my style. I am not saying that it has been easy. Every time I would wear something in a bright color or a metallic I’d feel like I was wearing a sign saying “LOOK AT ME!” But inevitably someone would compliment me on that new accessory and after I’d worn it once or twice, I just didn’t even think about it anymore. I especially have felt this way whenever wearing statement jewelry. I’ve gotten in the habit of telling myself to just go ahead and leave the house before I can overthink it, and I’m always happy I did. Now, it’s been a year since I bought my bright red purse and I’ve finally been able to start dipping my toe into the world of colorful clothes. I’ve even purchased my first non-neutral colored dress, in fact, it’s a cheery coral/orange and it makes me feel like a million bucks. I feel so amazing now that I’m not hiding behind my neutrals and trying to just disappear. So, it is not an exaggeration to say that the bright red purse changed my life. That red purse is responsible for my hard-core addiction to accessories (well, the red purse and Brian). I hope that you are able to find your magical “red purse,” whether it’s a bright silk scarf, or a pair of yellow shoes, or literally a red purse. Don’t worry, you can always count on Brian (and the rest of us here at Foot Solutions Sandy Springs) to encourage you to be a little daring.
