Scattered Light

In 1947, Christian Dior introduced his collection called “the new look.” Overnight he redefined the feminine look – cinched waist, full skirts, excess, and beauty. His designs carried woman’s fashion for years even after his death in 1957. Over the past 70 years the Christian Dior house of design has had multiple banner men. Each one evolving the line with their own unique personality, but each season still ultimately celebrating the same idea of beauty and what it means to be a woman. This season is the first collection from Dior by Maria Grazia. Maria Grazia’s background reads like the impressive resume one would expect for the person being tossed the keys to palace that is The House of Dior. She has a celebrated history that includes Valentino and Fendi. After 70 years of defining the essence of woman’s celebrated beauty, the collection was directed by a woman. During each fashion week, my mother and I look forward to checking out collections just after the show or in some cases watching it live stream. Some of the designers that draw first attention are Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, D Squared2, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, and, of course Dior. As I began to flip through the looks from Maria Grazia, I was both intrigued and somewhat saddened. Aesthetically, the collection was rather captivating. It was an edgy and provocative collection that could itself be called a “new look.” Please don’t misunderstand, I really thought the collection was great, however… I found myself asking if it was more about what Dior has always meant to women or if it was more about a modern woman art directing at Dior? Looking through the 64 looks from this season’s collection there are some pieces that would work as staples in almost any wardrobe. There were three different off white cropped pants with tailored cuffs, a sleeveless long white button down shirt that can hardly been seen under the quilted vest. If it was made of kevlar, it could almost be police issue. While truly on the edge of what will work, you have to ask yourself, who’s gonna wear this? Throughout every one of our Inspire books I generally always say at some point, “ready to wear is rarely all that ready to wear.” That theme is spreading like tuberculosis in the jailhouse and less and less clothing

shown during fashion weeks around the world have mass retail-able quality. It is almost as if the consumer is getting totally left out of the process. Fashion shows have their roots anchored back to the time of Louis XIV, who, in an effort to stabilize the french textile industry, imposed regulations on the production of seasonal patterns and materials. From that came the two seasons of fashion. Charles Frederick Worth, the “Father of Haute Couture,” first brought the runway to life by showing his creations on live models 6 to 8 months ahead of the season for consumers to decide what they would want to buy. In a time where each peace was hand crafted by designers themselves, the eight month lead time was needed to meet the demands of the customers. Slowly, over the past 70 years, the idea of a fashion show has changed from meeting the demands of the consumer to a cat fight. Everyone is trying to claw to the top and get the greatest number of likes and shares on social media. Design seems to revolve more around the eye of the critic than the consumer. Vogue hosts a huge encyclopedia of runway history on their website. The particulars on each show for each designer and every season can be found all in one place. For any given season a line of poster images runs across the top of the page, one for each of the top shows, as chosen by the Vogue editors. These collections are presented to us as the best of what the fashion world has to offer, but are they? Spring 2017 includes names like Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Balenciaga, and Gucci to name a few. I always laugh because I’ll probably end up looking at the “top shows” last. The purpose of this book is to filter out and share the most relevant information and make feeling current and well dressed accessible. While most of the fashion industry seems to be designing over the people that could best afford to purchase a piece of their creative genius, there are those that seem to understand where their bread is buttered. One can always count on Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, JW Anderson, Madewell, and others to produce clothes that one might actually buy. Dolce & Gabbana will always make me smile, a little out there, but so whimsical that one can’t help but love it. In a climate where the most outlandish will receive the greatest praise, young designers trying to make their mark on fashion history seem to be in a battle of one-upmanship. While dominating social media and critics headlines may increase their namesake, you can’t swipe an article through a credit card machine. While it may sound like I’m putting down fashion as an art, I’m actually a big fan. But what does one do to find practical glamour and effortless unique style out of a mess of avant-guard confusion? I suppose the art of fashion is like a sunset, and the long filter of the atmosphere scatteres light creating those breathtaking colors. Using the same logic one could say that the way to enjoy the art of fashion is to look at it though a heavy filter. Not looking at it as what to wear but filtering out materials, silhouettes, colors, and layering ideas to craft our own style. Fashion is temporary, style is forever. Through that filter, there are some definite stand outs this season, including some in the “new new look” from Dior. First and foremost there is asymmetry. In a world and a time seemingly transfixed with everything being fair and balanced, the tailoring in cloths this season are anything

3

but. Asymmetric hemlines are a must this season. Get your extra small knitting needles out, because the tiny lace patterns are everywhere. Lace shirts, lace trim, lace skirts, and lace jackets. You can not go wrong with lace this season. Accessories again are queen. Pile them on, because the more the better. When you think you’ve put on enough pins and chains, add a few more. Make them outlandish. Costume jewelry is fun and inexpensive. Pick out things you like and wear them. Transparent fabrics are very prevalent. While I’d recommend an opaque undershirt that seems to be often left out of the runway look, sheer shirts and dresses produce a great layered look. And, of course, denim still proves a staple. You’ll see denim skirts, and the pairing of jeans and denim shirts, especially in menswear. Please skip the overalls and jumpsuits. You’ll be glad to hear that while the tapered leg and skinny jean are still the most popular, and in many cases necessary to make today’s shoe trends work, the higher waist is elbowing out the low low rise. When looking through the endless options of skinny jeans, remember to check for a good percentage of spandex and ask if the style comes in “high-rise.” If you cant find a “highrise” that works for you, or there’s something you’d like to cover, the long shirt gets even longer this season. The last two seasons I’ve written about long shirts getting longer. This season they are practically, no literally, dresses over jeans, pants, leggings, or slacks. It is actually a great look and becoming more and more popular. This season is full of happy colors. The bright heaven-scent hues really make things pop. Of course, all set over plenty of white, the nature derived pallet is full of joy. Even the names bring a smile to my face; Primrose Yellow, Pale Dogwood, Island Paradise, Flame, Niagara, and Lapis Blue. While these colors are from a report of what can be found in ready to wear, shoe colors this season share some similarities. Grey has been trending in footwear for a couple of years now. This season grey will be a staple. Soft hues of pink and baby blue make for a care–free pallet. Lion, a rich tan with a hint of orange, crosses genders and can be found in every brand. The white bottom that evokes mixed emotions from people has fully taken over. It’s different but embrace it. The sport inspired look, where everyone dressed like they were going to the gym all day, is finally beginning to fade but leaves us with the white bottoms on shoes and leggings. Just remember, not all leggings are pants! This is the second season we’ve put together our own Springboards. There are 10 unique combinations to encourage you and to make accessible the most current and applicable trends. I hope that you find them fun and inspiring as you search for the scattered light of fashion this season that works for you. A special thanks to our two clothing partners for this season; Potpourri in Sandy Springs and Mode Marché / M2 at Ansley Mall. We couldn’t do it without them. I hope you enjoy this eighth edition of INSPIRE, a seasons guide to ready to wear fashion.

or more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. From colors that are bright and vivid to those that convey a sense of earthiness, our top 10 colors for spring 2017 are reminiscent of the hues that surround us in nature. In conjunction with New York Fashion Week, the PANTONE Fashion Color Report provides a comprehensive overview of fashion designers’ use of color in their spring 2017 collections. Featuring the top 10 shades seen on the runway, the PANTONE Fashion Color Report is your essential color guide to the season. “One of the things that we saw this year, was a renewed sense of imagination in which color was appearing in context that was different than the traditional,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of tWhe Pantone Color Institute. “Reminiscent of the hues that surround us in nature, our Spring 2017 Fashion Color Report evokes a spectrum of emotion and feeling. From the warmth of sunny days with PANTONE 13-0755 Primrose Yellow to the invigorating feeling of breathing fresh mountain air with PANTONE 18-0107 Kale and the desire to escape to pristine waters with PANTONE 14-4620 Island Paradise, designers applied color in playful, yet thoughtful and precise combinations to fully capture the promises, hope, and transformation that we yearn for each Spring.”

Classic Bamboo Brown/Fire

While there are 3 different tan–to–brown tones in this look, they do not match, but they definitely GO together. Each one adds its own spice to this look. I love the wire rims of this jacket. The edges of the collar and front closure of this sweet lambskin bomber have a stiff wire to give it the perfect attitude for the occasion. Desigual is synonomus with fun. This watercolor top is no exception. Notice the six decorative buttons in the front for fun while the three functional buttons, hidden from view, keep things simple while getting dressed.

Neck scarves, And Blazers, and stripes with paisley This season I’m in love with neck scarves. You may have worn one as a child, or admired them on the refined characters in period films. This season, give this accessory a try. Material options and knot style or placement allow for infinite options. I love a blazer, swing coat, or jacket. Ralph Lauren can do simple better than anyone. Simple with statement – life’s all about balance. The soft white, ecru, and cream are simple and classic. The necklace is over the top. and it works. People often ask about mixing patterns. This look from Etro has so much going on but manages to make a beautfully cohesive ensemble. When doing this much pattern mixing, it helps to have slightly less contrast. Note that the look below is cream and black with a border of metallic between the two. Using black and white is more harsh and less pleasing to the eyes.

Monocromatic and tonal looks make for some of the most interesting ensembles. This popover from Nude is one piece that even the best photography cannot do justice. The light weight knit has a soft and shimmering metallic coating that really adds dimension and interest. No detail is left to chance with any Lafayette piece, these jeans included. Continuing the soft metallic story, these elegant sandals from Gabor complete the look and are comfortable for all day wear.

I would like to point out the versatility of a fun dress like this. I paired this cute Desigual piece with a dressier sandal from Naot, but it could pair perfectly with a cute laceup as well. With a long strand of fresh water pearls you’ll be ready for anything your day throws at you. One trend of note this season revolves around hadbag accessories. The oversized tassel and pompoms are a must have. Whether in a like or contrasting color, they can aid as a quick access to the zipper while being a fun detail for your bag.

The Real Deal

Carol Culp How long have you been a FS Customer? I actually purchased several pairs of Brooks years ago from Foot Solutions Sandy Springs. When my good friends the Riggs purchased this store I began coming in regularly, or as we now say, all the time!

Were we what you expected? I have been amazed over the past 5 years to see how the merchandise is on trend and so much cuter than other ‘good for your feet ‘ stores. I hate to say how many pairs of shoes and boot/booties I have purchased here, along with several purses, socks, which I love, and a scarf or two.

Are your feet more comfortable now? Yes. I am lucky and don’t really have troublesome feet, but... arch support and strong shoes make me smile! I didn’t truly realize how unsupportive and uncomfortable my shoes were.

Has shopping with us changed the way you think about shoes or affected your lifestyle? Yes. I love getting fun shoes! While I am happy to find safe staples to cover the basics, I do like the unusual and different styles you carry. I don’t want ‘boring’ shoes. It’s fun to hear younger friends tell me that all my shoes are cute. I have had to rearrange my closet to have my shoes visible. There are a few pairs I go back to consistently in a season. However, I like to wear different shoes and have different looks.

What do you do for fun? I work out several days a week and walk. I love to travel. Those are certainly times when a good shoe makes a difference. I’ve had two knee replacements and avoid some types of shoes. Recently I got your ‘wedding shoe’ which has more heel than I’m used to, but oh! – I wore it seven hours with no problem!!!!

What do you do that makes you happy? I’m involved in a bible study at my church and also love taking meals to moms who have just had new little ones.

Where do you get inspiration for style? I walk at the mall quite often. I love Brian’s book linking fashion and shoes. I want to look relevant and as if I put some thought into getting dressed.

T h e R e a l D e a l C u l p C o nt e n u e d If you were a color from the Spring 2017 Pantone Color Report, which color would you be and why? Wow! Stunning colors. I would have to go with Flame. I do love the strong bold color of the orange or the Lapis blue.

Are you planning any trips this spring or summer? I’m going to Sarajevo, Bosnia to visit good friends ministering there. Also, I am going to spend several days in Florence, Italy where my great grandmother lived for months a year in the 50’s and 60’s then, I am off to Berlin visiting another friend ministering there.

Having lived here since 1989, what should those new to Atlanta not miss? The Botanical Gardens, Stone Mountain for its history, and The Beltline for the way it is energizing so much of the inner area of the city.

What’s your favorite restaurant? Chops, Capitol Grille Buckhead, and Rathburns. I am definitely a carnivore and always looking for a. new favorite.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read? And Ladies of the Club by Helen Hoover Santmyer. It’s a historical fiction account of several generations of women in a book Club in a small Ohio town post civil war.

What else would you like to tell us about yourself that these questions didn’t discover? One of my favorite trips was visiting my brother and family in Hong Kong and spending time in Bangkok. I actually went three times to Japan and Taipei and to Singapore. Also, I was a museum docent for five years in Birmingham where I loved the Oriental Art collection and Wedgewood.

Is there a particular brand or brands of shoes we sell that you like the most? Think! and Gabor are my favorites. However, I do also like Naots, have worn Finn Comfort, and, of course, my Brooks athletic shoes are worn almost daily.

Fine detailing can truly make or break a look. Have at least two different white pants this season, perhaps in two different materials. This pair from Lafayette has great detailing. I love the split at the ankles. The off the shoulder top may not be for everyone, but they are extremely poplular. For me, the oversized cuffs are the perfect point of interest. The Second Half One of the things I enjoy most about my work is having many opportunities to engage and get to know other women my age. I’m always asking people, “What do you do?” You might think it’s just a conversation starter, but the fact is that I really want to know. I learn a lot from all of you. Some of you are in situations I have experienced in the past, and others are in a lifestyle to which I aspire. In either case, there are always the shared common denominators - things like graying hair, age spots, and the inevitable life changes we know to expect whether we like it or not. I have a photograph on a shelf at home that was taken of our family when our two children were very young. I sometimes look at myself in that photo and try to remember who I was at that time. Everything about my life was so different then and yet I am somehow still the same person. What was I doing with my time then? What did I worry about? What was I trying to accomplish? Whether you are a career woman, a stay at home mom, or a combination of the two, chances are that when you reach the “middle” years, things begin to change. Much of what you were trying to accomplish has probably been achieved. The career path has likely settled into at least a somewhat comfortable place. The children have grown up whether you like it or not and you’ve even been able to give thought to other activities you want to pursue. So what now? At no other time in history has there been such a large number of men and women entering their “second half” with as much education, good health, and material resources available to them. What if we all started to consider what could be done with that? In recent times these resources have enabled people to retire and pretty much enjoy whatever interests them most. But some people really want to keep working at something as long as they possibly can. Sometimes we work so hard to achieve an easy retirement but then have a hard time enjoying it. I know from talking to friends and clients that often these middle years can be frightening because the old demands on life have changed, and we are faced with deciding what to do next at a time when our bodies are also changing. The world would have us believe that we are less valuable if we show our age, but really, our age is what makes us more valuable. I first started thinking about this when I listened to a TED Talk by Jane Fonda. She and I haven’t always seen eye to eye on everything, but I really appreciated the thoughts she shared on aging, “Here we are with more experience, more knowledge and more resources than ever before. We probably face another twenty years of life. What will we do with it?” I also recently read a book entitled Embracing Your Second Calling: Find Passion and Purpose for the Rest of Your Life. In the introduction, the author wrote:

21

I N SP I RE • SCATTER E D LI G HT

“ t h e s ec o n d h a l f ” C o nt e n u e d “A second calling isn’t about something you do but about someone you become. It is the belief that the best is yet to come, and it will probably look very different than anything that has come before.” So, instead of bemoaning the next birthday, I’d rather consider what my life experiences uniquely qualify me to do. Where do I see a need? What am I passionate about? What hurts have I dealt with in the past that would enable me to encourage someone else? The men and women I meet every day in our store possess so much that the whole world needs. You might not feel exactly healthy, wealthy, and wise but when you really think about it…maybe you are! Personally, I am beginning to try to evaluate my “mature” self and learn more about who I am and who I want to become. I’m not considering the launch of a new career. I just want to consciously evaluate how I respond to the world around me and how I can contribute in a positive way. In the past, most of my decisions were determined by my roles as daughter, sister, wife, mother and now even grandmother. Some of those roles will continue and some may not. Many of you have been thrust into new situations and new identities through no choice of your own. When one’s identity begins to change, we have to learn more about who we truly are. A.W. Tozer wrote: “We learn who we truly are by: l. What we want most. 2. What we think about most. 3. How we use our money. 4. What we do with our leisure time. 5. The company we enjoy. 6. Whom and what we admire. 7. What we laugh at.” As we reflect on how our identities evolve, we can evaluate what is changing in our lives. What painful times have we experienced and how could someone have helped? Perhaps this is a time to develop a list of traits we would like to develop rather than a list of goals to achieve. Our culture has put so much value on productivity and busy lifestyles that we’ve forgotten how to be fully present anywhere. Our interactions with other people might be dramatically different if we were more focused on the present moment. Tap into what your friends already know about you. As you share, console and stretch each other, you will grow together. As you go through this process, opportunities are sure to appear that call for what you have to offer. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 40 million women in the US are considered to be “mid life”. This huge, unprecedented population movement may present an opportunity unlike any group of women has ever faced. So, when you feel as though the best of life might have passed, rewire your thinking to feel as though you are just now poised to do your best. As one person put it, “Ambition is not that attractive at my age. It’s much more important to be gracious.”

The Real Deal

Robin Pollack How long have you been a FS Customer? I’ve been a customer at Foot Solutions since just prior to the time when y’all purchased the store in 2010.

What first brought you in and why have you continued to shop with us? I was having a problem walking and was a candidate for foot surgery. Having personalized, educated advice on what shoe is best for me has been most helpful. I used to buy Prada and other designer shoes at Saks, but since I now have foot problems, I do all my shoe shopping at FS. Not only do they have great choices for bad feet, they also make great orthotics. I’ve bought two pairs of orthotics at Foot Solutions and I wear them all the time.

Does it effect your lifestyle, if so, how? My choice of shoes has a big impact on both my lifestyle and my quality of life, since my chronic foot problems require that I wear shoes that provide sufficient support and shock absorption. I wouldn’t wear any other shoes now.

What do you do for fun? I’m a master gardener, as well as a professional (ceramic) potter. Outside of travel and entertainment/food, my greatest fun is derived from gardening and pottery. This past year my home was featured on Atlanta Botanical Garden Connisseur Tour 2016.

What do you do that makes you happy? Living life, taking advantage of every moment as it comes. Being in the moment. In addition to my hobbies of gardening and pottery, hanging out with my family, including my amazing husband Marc, and our two wonderful granddaughters are some of my greatest joys.

How do you incorporate color into your life? Color is in my DNA. Having spent 30+ years as an art teacher, color is both planned and organic. You can find a splash of color in my garden, throughout my house and in all of my art. Even so, all of my clothes are black or white or gray.

Where do you get inspiration for style? I get all of my inspirations for design, style, texture and color, from nature. I tell a story about the things that inspire me in my garden using ceramic totems. I have two Koi ponds, 25 bird houses, and we’ve built a lake that is a bird estuary. We have

T h e R e a l D e a l Po l l a c k C o nt e n u e d cultivated a watering hole for mother nature which provides respite for all kinds of creatures. I love watching nature. It’s the best show on earth. I’ve designed lots of resting places in my gardens. My father’s urn rests beneath a 75 year old fig tree in the front yard. Each individually designed space has particular meaning to us. I look around me when I’m gardneing and the colors, textures, and shapes around me are my inspiration.

If you were a color from the Spring 2017 Pantone Color Report, which color would you be and why? Pink Yarro because it’s vibrant and forward.

Are you planning any trips this spring or summer? Marc and I regularly go to New Orleans to spend time with my granddaughters, and we often travel to the Caribbean. We love Caneel Bay on St. John. The best snorkeling and swimming is just out the back door. We go island hopping through the BVI’s.

How long have you lived in Atlanta? I’ve lived in Atlanta since 3rd grade. In fact, since then, I’ve always lived in three zip codes, all of which adjoin each other.

If someone was new to Atlanta what would you suggest they not miss? I’d highly recommend some of the great neighborhoods in Atlanta to a newcomer, like West Midtown, Virginia Highlands and Inman Park/ Old Fourth Ward. I would definitely not miss the Beltline, as well as the High Museum, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Make sure to hit up the Battery and the new Suntrust Park.

What’s your favorite restaurant? My favorite restaurant is Chez Marc. Eating my husband’s cooking at home is the best. With an endless supply of fresh vegetables from the garden, each meal is a garden to table experience. If you don’t have an invitation to dine at my house, be sure to check out Bacchanalia in West Midtown and Staplehouse in the Edgewood area.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read? I’m currently reading The Bridal Chair, and I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s the story of Marc Chagall.

If you were a libation, what would you be? A glass of Moët & Chandon champagne! Cause it’s bubbly and makes me feel good.

Mixtures of materials can make for some of the most captivating looks. This Annemieke necklace is made from dollops of natural rubber. The top is sheer with flocked birds. The tank has metallic edging. These are topped over a simple and very comfortable stretch cropped pant with a slight flare for that extra snap. For those who fear adopting the white sole on shoes, remember that it isn’t an element that must be worn with white, but it can be used as a design element in an outfit.

While higher and higher rises of jeans become more popular this season, the market will still be dominated by low to mid rise skinnys. If you’d like a little more coverage, a simple coverup like this duster from Dolce Cabo is a perfect versatile piece to add to your wardrobe. Remember that denim can wear for all occasions. A more dressed up shoe choice takes the look to a different level. The soft blush and dove grey colors over a darker indigo wash jean kick up your style quotient with a gorgeous contrasting shoe. Remember the time when the shoe was supposed to be darker than your pants or dress? Well, those days are gone.

The Real Deal

Debbi Smith Henderson What first brought you in to see us? In 2015, I experienced pain and numbness in my right foot. As a part of the treatment plan for my condition, my Podiatric Orthopedic Specialist recommended comfortable shoes with a wider toe box. Foot Solutions is very close to my home and is in the shopping center where I frequently shop. I visited the store hoping there would be shoes there to fit my treatment requirements and meet my expectation for style and quality.

Were we what you expected? Yes, the shoes met my expectations and the services exceeded my expectations. One thing you do provide that most stores don’t, is attention to detail and custom fitting. You explain to the customer what you’re trying to accomplish. You also encourage us to come back for adjustments if needed.

Do you have more fun with shoes than you used to? Has shopping with us changed the way you think about shoes? In my opinion, a wardrobe reflects one’s inner self and shoes have always been an integral part of my wardrobe. I think the shoes at Foot Solutions complete my wardrobe and they allow me to project confidence as well as style.

What do you do that makes you happy? I like purchasing theological books that I do not own. In my current collection, I have approximately 200 Bibles and numerous reference books. Part of the fun is the exploration and various means of acquisition.

Tell me about one of your most intersting recent finds. When we first moved to Atlanta, we were living in the Druid Hills area. I went to an antique store by the Tara Theater. I was looking through books as I usually do when I realized it was a large collection. It belonged to a pastor who’s family had sold it. I bought the entire collection which took multiple car trips to get home. That’s one of the most memorable.

Where do you get inspiration for style? I integrate what I see in stores, magazines, vintage movies and the awe-inspiring mystique of nature. I think birds are the best dressed creatures on the planet.

T h e R e a l D e a l S m i t h H e n d e rs o n C o nt e n u e d If you were one of the colors from the spring 2017 Pantone color report which color would you be and why? I would choose Pale Dogwood because it conveys tranquility; worn alone the color is elegant and complements most other colors. Functionally, it can be a substitute for the basic black.

Are you planning any trips this spring or summer? My husband, Edward, and I plan to go to Cancun, Mexico in early September. We haven’t been there before, but we are going for a wedding.

How long have you lived in Atlanta? I worked in telecommunications for approximately 40 years and my company transferred me to Atlanta in 1998. My husband and I bought our home in Sandy Springs at that time and we have been residents for 19 years.

If someone was new to Atlanta what would you suggest they not miss? I think anyone new to Atlanta should visit the Fox Theatre. It is a beautiful, historic, and one of a kind performing arts venue. The first time I visited the Fox was for an event sponsored by my employer. We recently went to see The Phantom Of The Opera. Any event there will be a memorable experience.

Do you have a favorite restaurant? My favorite restaurant is Chops in Buckhead, I really like the crab cakes. Our family celebrates special occasions there. The last time we went was my retirement party last year. It was a wonderful and intimate event for the family.

Is there a particular brand or brands of shoes we sell that you like the most? I prefer the Gabor brand because I have found it to be the best fit for my feet.

The Real Deal

Beth Nabors How long have you been a FS Customer? I’m not sure exactly when I first came in. But I do know that it was less than 2 years ago.

What first brought you in? I had just been to see the orthopedist who had done a couple of surgeries to repair a torn tendon in a toe on my left foot. At the time, I had a stress fracture in my right foot that I wanted him to check. When he saw the shoes that I was wearing, he gave me a lecture on how, if I continued to wear shoes that weren’t good for my feet, I could expect to continue to have foot problems. As I drove home with a cloud of depression hanging over me, I was certain that my feet were doomed to ugly shoes for eternity – I saw your billboard and decided to stop in.

Were we what you expected? Not at all. I was expecting to see an assortment of heavy, lace up shoes like what my grandmother wore. I also finally had someone tell me why I needed arch support even though my arches are fine.

Are your feet more comfortable now? My feet are not only comfortable, they’re happy because they look so good.

Do you have more fun with shoes than you used to? Has shopping with us changed the way you think about shoes? I would say I have more fun with clothes now – not just shoes. No matter how cute the outfit, if the shoes aren’t right you’re not going to feel good about what you are wearing. As for how I think about shoes, that’s a bit more complicated. I work in my husband’s office, and I can bring my dogs to work with me. At some point during the day, I like to take each dog around the office complex for a nice long walk. It does all three of us good. Since these walks are on hard asphalt, I almost always wear a pair of shoes that I bought from you. Otherwise, my feet will be screaming for the rest of the day.

I N SP I RE • SCATTER E D LI G HT

T h e R e a l D e a l N a b o rs C o nt e n u e d What do you do for fun? I like to read, work in the yard, and walk my dog by the river. Although I don’t do it as often as I would like, I love to travel. This past summer my husband and I met our daughter in Italy where she had been in school. Having been there studying art history. She knew the city and had each day all planned out. We met each morning in the hotel lobby at 8am and we didn’t miss anything.

Is there a place you haven’t been that you’d like to visit? There are so many places I’d love to go. I’ve never seen the Grand Canyon except from an airplane. In fact I’d love to visit all of the National Parks out west.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read? The best would be hard to answer. I’m currently reading a book about The Medici’s. It is especially interesting to me having been to Florence this past summer. I saw a Netflix series about the family and was interested to know more about how the truth and the show were the same.

What do you do that makes you happy? I love to entertain, especially a casual meal with good food, good wine, and good friends. I love big family dinners such as Thanksgiving.

Do you have a favorite restaurant? I don’t really have a favorite. We cook at home a lot. Since our trip to Italy, we’ve gotten a gelato maker and a pasta maker. My daughter gave us an Italian cook book and we’re trying lots of new things.

If someone was new to Atlanta what would you suggest they not miss? Whatever your interest, Atlanta has something to offer. If you like being outdoors, there’s the Botanical Garden or Beltline. For those that like history, check out the Ghost Tour in Roswell.
