Comfort Food Whole Roasted Chicken With Local Apple-Raisin-Cranberry Chutney 1 chicken (3 to 3 1/2 pounds) 2 tsp salt 1 tsp fresh-ground black pepper 4 strips (as opposed to shredded) of orange zest (from top to bottom on one side of an orange) 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 package (12-ounce) fresh or frozen cranberries (about 3 cups) 1 tart apple 1 c. raisins 1/2 c. brown sugar ½ c. apple juice or cider 4 tsp. cider vinegar ¼ tsp. ground ginger ½ c. orange juice (from about 1 orange)

1. Heat the oven to 425°F. Rub the chicken with 1 tablespoon olive oil, 11/2 teaspoon salt and 3/4 teaspoon pepper and put the orange zest inside. Put the chicken, breast-side up, in a roasting pan. Roast the chicken until just done, 50 to 60 minutes. Or until 160* internal temp 2. In a medium saucepan, bring the cranberries to a boil with the apple, raisins, brown sugar, apple juice, vinegar, ginger, ½ teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cover and simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has thickened and the fruit is tender, about 15 minutes. 3. When the chicken is done, transfer the bird to a plate and leave to rest for about 10 minutes. Pour off the fat from the roasting pan and save. Set the pan over moderate heat and add the orange juice. Bring to a boil, scraping the bottom of the pan to get the brown bits. Boil until reduced to approximately 1/4 cup, about 4 minutes. Add any accumulated juices from the chicken. Serve the chicken with the orange sauce and the chutney. Serve with your choice of side. Recommendation roasted butternut squash, mash potatoes, green bean almondine, roasted Brussels sprouts.

words from the editors and publishers:

In our last editor’s letter, we talked about how our plan for the month of August was to capitalize on the last days of summer with poolside relaxation. Well, August had different plans for the Strauss family. On July 29, my son and daughter-in-law welcomed their baby boy, Bennett Daniel Strauss, to the world—one month early! They say he came early because they had an awesome meal at one of their favorite Mexican restaurants. But, in reality, we suspect that maybe he was just fully baked, and ready to spend time with his parents, who are doing really well. Both Michael and Jonelle have time off from work, which they needed not just to figure out how to live a life of first-time parents, but also because in the midst of all this they became first-time home owners. So instead of poolside relaxation last month we became grandparents, jumped right in the car and made the trip to New Hampshire. It was nice being on the road, seeing all of the families with their cars packed full of items for outdoor fun: Kayaks, Bikes, Boogie Boards. It reminded us of all the fun we had with Sean and Michael when they were younger and we spent time at the Jersey shore with family. Bennett’s arrival marks a new chapter in our lives that will be the return of all those exciting experiences. This month we expect to make more trips to New Hampshire to spend time with our grandson. We look forward to the crisp fall air, the return of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles, and maybe the occasional PSL (pumpkin spiced latte, of course). Recipes this month from the book, Beauty Food by Maria Ahlgren, shares toppings that can boost your glow, a Beauty Bonus Tip and a deliciously healthy recipe for Skin-lovin’ spaghetti marinara with garlic-fried mushrooms and pumpkin “parmesan” Are your pets disturbing your sleep? Missy arrived as a stay with a story only she knows. Estimated at about 16 years old, she’s hoping for a family who will make her golden years the best years of her life. This sweet little lady is a bit shy at first but then nuzzles into your lap for neck scratches and gives purrs in return. Missy currently co-houses with other cats, so she’d be open to a home with other kitties. Who has room in their heart and home for this lovely lady? Are your pets disturbing your sleep? You’re not alone. Rest assured, there may be a good reason you’re dog-tired. While countless pet owners peacefully sleep with a warm pet nearby, a new Mayo Clinic study, presented this week at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, finds an increase in the number of people experiencing sleep disturbances because of their pets. A previous Mayo Clinic study published in 2002 reported that of patients who visited the clinic’s sleep center and owned pets, only one percent reported any inconvenience from their pets at night. The new study shows a larger number of patients — 10 percent in 2013 — reported annoyance that their pets sometimes disturbed their sleep. “The study determined that while the majority of patients did not view their pets intolerably disturbing their sleep, a higher percentage of patients experienced

irritation — this may be related to the larger number of households with multiple pets,” says Lois Krahn, M.D., Mayo Clinic psychiatrist and author of the study. “When people have these kinds of sleep problems, sleep specialists should ask about companion animals and help patients think about ways to optimize their sleep.” Between August and December 2013, 110 consecutive patients at the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine in Arizona provided information about pets at night as part of a comprehensive sleep questionnaire. Questions covered the type and number of pets, where the animals slept, any notable behaviors and whether the patient was disturbed. The survey showed that 46 percent of the patients had pets and 42 percent of those had more than one pet. The most popular pets were dogs, cats and birds. The disturbances by pets that patients reported included snoring, whimpering, wandering, the need to “go outside” and medical needs. “One patient owned a parrot who consistently squawked at 6 a.m.,” Dr. Krahn says. “He must have thought he was a rooster.” Mayo Clinic News Network.

Read This to Rest Your Mind

Karen Verna Carlson

What relief are you seeking right now? What mental activity or state would you like to soften or eliminate? Weariness? General restlessness? Feeling disappointed, abandoned, bummed out? Resentful or downright angry at somebody? Guilty regret about something you said or did? Anxious about some future event? A Progressive Process I guarantee that you will feel better, maybe even a whole lot better by the time you read my last sentence. Now, come on, don’t skip to that concluding statement. I assure you there’s nothing revelatory about it. Just engage with each sentence progressively as a process leading you step by step towards a better state, an attitude adjustment. That’s what mind training does most every time I practice it. But just reading this column will move you gently to a slightly more pleasant mood, without even practicing formal meditation. Breath Connects Us in Life I’m breathing as I type these words. You’re breathing as you read these words. If we weren’t breathing we wouldn’t be making this connection through these words. If we all weren’t breathing there’d be no life. We excrete carbon dioxide which plants need to live. They excrete oxygen critical for our survival (with free delivery, no less). Can you simply for this one moment, give your wholehearted attention to the experience and the idea that you are breathing in gifts from plants around the world, and breathing out life-sustaining gifts for them? Breathing connects us with plants. Breathing connects us with each other. You and I both depend on oxygen to live. You and I both have similar respiratory systems. These phenomena connect you with me and me with you. Seeing that we share that fundamental connection, we can easily recognize many, many other connections as Homo sapiens.

12

Let’s Experiment Because we’re connected in so many ways on so many levels, maybe, just maybe my momentarily restful brain/mind can influence your agitated one. It’s an easy quick experiment. The results will be revealed just minutes from now. Read on. Oh, if you can open your mind a little bit more to the possibility of benefitting, that could help influence the results in your favor. Common Misunderstanding Now that I’ve led you this far tempting you with the possibility of feeling better, I’m going to boggle your mind with an apparent contradiction. “When people start to meditate or to work with any kind of spiritual discipline, they often think that somehow they’re going to improve,” writes Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön (The Wisdom of No Escape, Shambhala Publications, Boston, 1991). “There’s a common misunderstanding among all the human beings who have ever been born on the earth that the best way to live is to try to avoid pain and just try to get comfortable. You can see this even in insects and animals and birds. All of us are the same.” Develop Curiosity “A much more interesting, kind, adventurous, and joyful approach to life is to begin to develop our curiosity…for the sake of finding out who we are and what this world is, how we tick and how our world ticks, how the whole thing just is. If we’re committed to comfort at any cost, as soon as we come up against the least edge of pain, we’re going to run; we’ll never know what’s beyond that particular barrier or wall or fearful thing.” Befriend Yourself Chödrön explains, “Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It’s about befriending who

we are already….to begin to take an interest in ourselves, to investigate and be inquisitive about ourselves.…So come as you are. The magic is being willing to open to that, being willing to be fully awake to that. One of the main discoveries of meditation is seeing how we continually run away from the present moment, how we avoid being here just as we are. That’s not considered to be a problem; the point is to see it,” she says. Gentle, Precise, Open “Inquisitiveness or curiosity involves being gentle, precise, and open—actually being able to let go and open. Gentleness is a sense of goodheartedness toward ourselves. Precision is being able to see very clearly, not being afraid to see what’s really there, just as a scientist is not afraid to look into the microscope.” Sense of Aliveness She calls this form of meditation loving kindness (maitri). In conjunction with a sense of general wakefulness, of aliveness in all we do, the result (though we’re not aiming for a specific result) is a more passionate, full, and delightful life with increasingly more insights and humorous moments. Remember there are hundreds of meditation techniques. Most of the ones I’ve read about have loving, restful, refreshing consequences that foster a better connection with my own self, and by extension a better connection with life itself. Simplify Focus Chödrön describes nine maitri practices for resting the mind. As I’ve written in previous columns mindfulness about breathing is often a central focus in meditation. “Simplify down to just that breath….The instruction is not Blot out all other things,” she says. While 25% of your awareness is still engaged with your environment—“there are colors and sounds and other people...your ears and your nose and your mouth and your tactile senses still exist and none of them goes away—your attitude and experience evolve: you are not drawn off by every sound, not distracted by every sight, not completely captured by every movement of your mind.”

No Big Deal For example, right now while reading this you may be distracted for a moment, your attention may wander off. Just simply come back to reading. “There’s no sense of big deal….It is simply a process of seeing what is, noticing that, and then going on with life….meditation is not considering yourself an obstacle to yourself….you can regard [yourself] with gentleness and a sense of being awake and alive to who you are,” she says. Find Your Middle Way These are Chödrön’s “helpful hints on how to rest your mind in its natural state—how to keep your mind from going to one extreme or another. You could say these are instructions on how to find out what is the natural state. What is balance? What is a sense of equanimity? We’d all like to know that. The basic guideline is to see what’s too tight for you and what’s too loose for you, and you’ll discover [your natural state of balance]. Rather than trying to rest in the middle, just see what’s too tight and what’s too loose, and then you’ll find your own middle way.” Life Gets Better Over time middle way moments increase in frequency and duration. I’ve discovered that my own middle way experiences harbor no distress. Whatever your upsetting issue you can soften your attitude towards it by the process of finding your middle way. The practice of resting your mind through breath focus moves you in that direction, which leads to clearer understanding, which in turn leads to effective actions and improved well being. With breath practice, life actually gets better. Karen Verna Carlson, N.D., Ph.D. (Hon.) is a naturopathic physician and professor credited with “the first major breakthrough in Swedish Massage—research demonstrating energetic interconnections”—since Peter Ling systemized it in the early 19th century. In addition to her specialties of healing massage and bodywork, she provides sensitive, time- and cost-effective services for home or office, family members and staff, that include diverse holistic problem solving for garden, pets, children and elders. ...because what you’re eating, even healthy food, could be making you sick?

Integrative and Functional Nutrition: What should you expect when meeting with a healthcare professional? Liz Abel I’m often asked what is Functional Nutrition? What makes it different? Taking a peek at how an initial session with an experienced integrative practitioner unfolds reveals just how unique the experience is… There are two things every new client should understand. First, “integrative” means that food is just one aspect of health. We also talk about stress, sleep, sunshine and movement (or lack thereof). Second, this is not “urgent care” – meaning that you aren’t showing up today because of something that happened yesterday. Instead, I know that each client has a story to share. The symptoms have been building. You have intuition about your situation. You know what’s worked. You know what hasn’t worked. You know where you are stumped. And I want to hear all about it. My first job is to listen. My second job is to ask nosy, pointed questions. Yes, we will talk about all of the unpleasantries that you’d rather not discuss. Understanding what your bowel movements look like and whether or not you have an itchy anus are topics that can be positively impacted by food choices and supplemental support. The good news is I speak about these kind of topics all of the time; I take seriously the important role I have in shaping a safe space for this conversation to unfold. This safe space is critical, especially for the dialogue that can occur regarding other sensitive topics, such as eating behaviors, as one important example.

Here’s what might surprise you about an intake session: other than a very brief period of attention to foods that you commonly eat, we won’t typically talk much about food specifics in the first session. This may seem strange given I’m a nutritionist, but here’s why: Food is adaptable. We can change what we eat. It takes effort, but it can be done slowly and over time without much pain. In reality, I’m more likely to ask about who does the grocery shopping and the cooking in the house. Patterns and preferences are important to assess early on. It’s very important to me to understand if you are someone who only goes to the market once a week and cooks everything on Sunday or if you are a catch-as-catch-can kind of person when it comes to eating meals. The recommendations I will make for each of the individuals will vary, simply based on just this difference. We embrace a bio-individual philosophy, and that’s this: you are uniquely you. No one else is like you. No one else has your specific set of circumstances, your particular symptoms, or your health history, let alone your DNA, blood type and so on. That’s why we do NOT prescribe a “one size fits all” approach. Instead, every individual who walks through our doors will spend 75 minutes with a licensed nutritionist. The nutritionist will develop a care plan that specifically meets your health goals and concerns. The care plan will include additional session(s) with the nutritionist and may also include health coaching, testing, and/or supplements. Together, we work to give you the tools and support to help you navigate the recommended changes. We work – in support of you – with any members of your care team (mental health professionals, chiropractors, MDs, etc) as needed. Most people work directly and intensely with us for about 6 months; at that point, you have grown your new wings and are often ready to take flight into the new world that you’ve just created for yourself. This new world of feeling better. Imagine.

My third job is to analyze. Has a PCP made a diagnosis? Do we have all of the data (blood, stool, other testing) we need to paint a picture of optimal function? Do we need to gather more data that would be helpful? Nutrition-focused testing may include food and chemical sensitivity testing, vitamin and mineral level testing, metabolic assessment, stool testing to assess digestion and microbiome, oxidative stress and stress hormone testing, toxicity testing of metals and/or nonmetals, and more. Unlike traditional functional practices, where a new patient is often required to complete multiple tests to commence treatment, we prioritize only testing that may be most helpful for a new patient. Our philosophy is to go slowly; that way we can watch as the body reacts to changes in food, nutrients and lifestyle. A little of the right things can go a long way, whereas a lot of the wrong things only go a little way. 14

Create a Healthy Foundation for Fall Plantings

Melinda Myers

Fall is a great time to start a garden or renovate an existing planting bed. The soil is warm while the air is cool – a perfect combination for establishing new plantings. It is also a great time to prepare gardens for the next planting season. Investing time up front to create a healthy foundation for your plants will pay off with years of beautiful, healthy and productive gardens. When you read plant tags and seed packets you’ll find that the majority of plants prefer moist well-drained soil. Unfortunately, most gardeners aren’t growing in plant-friendly soils. Heavy clay, sandy and droughty soils are much more common. Understanding what you have is the best place to start when creating a healthy soil foundation for new and existing gardens. Start with a soil test. Contact the local office of your Extension Service or state certified soil testing lab for details. They can direct you on how to take a soil test and where to send the sample. The test results will tell you how much, if any, fertilizer, lime, or sulfur is needed. Following soil test recommendations can save you money spent on and time applying unnecessary soil additives. Plus, following the results will increase your gardening success. While waiting for the results you can do a bit of analysis yourself. Soils are made of clay, sand, and silt particles. The feel and cohesive nature of this sample will tell you a bit about your soil. Take a handful of soil and create a ribbon by rubbing it through your thumb and index finger to get a feel for your soil type. If the soil easily forms a ball or rolls into a sausage shape, feels slippery when wet and smoother when dry, you have a high percent of clay in your soil. Soils with a high percent of the very small clay particles are often called heavy soils. They stay wet longer and hold onto soil nutrients. Clay soils are slow to dry out and warm up in the spring. Avoid working them when wet. This leads to compaction and clods you will be contending with all season long.

Soils with a larger percent of sand particles don’t form a ball when moist and feel gritty to the touch. The much larger sand particles create bigger pores in the soil for water and nutrients to move through quickly. They tend to be nutrient deficient, fast draining and dry. But they warm up and dry quickly in the spring. Silt feels smooth like flour when dry and soapy slick when wet. They are the middle-sized particles that hold water and nutrients longer than sand, but not as much as clay particles. Silty soils drain slower and stay colder longer than sandy soils in the spring. Overworking soils with a high percent of silt leads to crusting and compaction, decreasing drainage and water infiltration. Consult your soil test report when preparing your new garden beds. Prior to planting is the easiest time to add organic matter to any of these soil types. It increases the water-holding ability, the infiltration rate so less water runs off the soil surface and builds plant-friendly soil structure. Incorporate several inches of compost, aged manure or other organic matter into the top eight to twelve inches of soil. Further improve your soil by using a slow release fertilizer with a high percent of organic matter like Milorganite (milorganite.com). The 85% organic matter feeds the soil microorganisms and your plants as it improves all soil types. You get multiple benefits with this type of fertilizer. So, as you plan your new landscape additions this fall, include testing and amending the existing soil into your plans. Understanding your soil can help you create a strong foundation important to the health, longevity and beauty of your gardens and landscapes.

Boost your glow with toppings Toppings are half the fun of bowl food. Here are my favorites to keep your skin baby soft, springy like a trampoline and less inviting for invaders such as free radicals and acne bacteria. Walnuts One of the few friends from the plant kingdom containing skin-strengthening omega-3 in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). A small fistful of walnuts a day helps the skin keep moisture levels up during the winter. Walnuts are also rich in antioxidants.

Almonds Wrinkles beware! The almond boasts one of nature’s highest contents of vitamin E, which protects our valuable cell membranes. Think of vitamin E as the police officer that stops free radicals from running amok. Almonds are also rich in magnesium.

Hemp seeds These contain all the essential amino acids and an optimal balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The seeds have been shown in studies to relieve dry and eczema-prone skin. Contains the fatty acid GLA, which can balance hormones. Thank you, says the PMS monster.

Raw cacao nibs Raw cacao is stuffed with superantioxidant flavonoids that protect against external beauty saboteurs and can even produce smoother skin. In a Korean study, cacao flavonoids have been shown to affect the wrinkles and skin firmness of people with moderate signs of ageing.

Chia seeds Each little chia seed has a 20 per cent content of the favorite omega-3 fatty acid, which can reduce inflammation and protect against various issues that come with ageing. It’s a complete protein, with all the building blocks necessary for skin, hair and nails. It also contains lots of dietary fibre.

Pumpkin seeds My favorite seed in all categories. Zinc is the mineral world’s own beauty jewel, and pumpkin seeds contain the biggest punch of zinc above all else. Zinc deficiency is linked to both acne and grey hair. As a former acne patient just beginning to grey, pumpkin seeds are a staple in my kitchen.

Goji berry Well obviously you’d want a sweet and sour antiwrinkle berry in your kitchen cupboard! Contains carotenoids (which protect the skin against sun damage), important amino acids, fibres and antioxidants. Buy only organic.

Skin-lovin’ spaghetti marinara with garlic-fried mushrooms and pumpkin ‘parmesan’ The world’s most skin-friendly pasta dish, topped with pumpkin ‘parmesan’ that will make your hair stand on end. Nutritional yeast flakes have the most unsexy name in the food cupboard, but they have a unique umami cheese flavour and the content of B vitamins is fantastic for hair and nails. Vegans often lack B12, so nutritional yeast should be a constant companion. Mix the flakes with zinc-rich pumpkin seeds for a raw ‘parmesan’ that is totally addictive. Store what’s left over in a tightly sealed glass jar in a cool, dark place.

2 SERVINGS

Combine the pumpkin ‘parmesan’ ingredients in a food processor until they are evenly distributed. Scrape the mixture from the edges as necessary, but don’t blitz it too long. You want a crumble, not butter.

1 large zucchini

MARINARA SAUCE 1 small white onion

For the garlic-fried mushrooms, slice the mushrooms into quarters. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the mushrooms and crushed garlic. Sauté until golden, then season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

2 garlic cloves 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 (14 1/2-oz) can chopped tomatoes 1 tablespoon organic vegan bouillon powder (not cubes) 2 teaspoons honey 2 teaspoons dried thyme 10 cherry tomatoes

GARLIC-FRIED MUSHROOMS 8 oz mushrooms (chestnut mushrooms work well) ½ tablespoon olive oil 2–3 garlic cloves salt and pepper

PUMPKIN ‘PARMESAN’ 100g pumpkin seeds 100g nutritional yeast flakes (found in health food stores)

For the sauce, finely chop the onion and garlic. Heat the olive oil in a deep saucepan. Fry the onion over a medium heat until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for a few minutes. Pour in the chopped tomatoes and bouillon powder and cook until the sauce begins to bubble. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for at least 20 minutes – the longer the better. Meanwhile, using a spiralizer, turn the courgette into spaghetti or shave into long, thin ribbons with a potato peeler. Season the tomato sauce with the honey, thyme, salt and pepper. Halve the cherry tomatoes and stir into the sauce. Add the courgette ‘spaghetti’ and stir everything until well combined. Lastly, add the mushrooms. Serve sprinkled with the pumpkin ‘parmesan’.

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional) 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes BEAUTY FOOD by Maria Ahlgren is available at: Barnes & Noble and amazon.com www.livingwellmagazine.net

Fixing What’s Wrong Doesn’t Really Work

Suzanne Eder

Last weekend was a really good one for me. I not only enjoyed a loving and uplifting visit with my dear sister Boo, I was also graced with deeper insight into something I thought I already understood as a result of the experience we shared. I had invited Boo to visit so she could accompany me on a shopping trip for a new bathroom vanity. Unlike her, I don’t seem to have a particular talent for interior design and really wanted her opinions and suggestions. I’m also committed this year to having more fun – to fully enjoying myself - whenever and wherever I can, and being with Boo is always fun. Needless to say I was very much looking forward to our time together. But before I tell you about our shopping spree and my deepened insight, let me give you a little back story about the vanity. The master bathroom in my home is – well, I’ve been known to refer to it as The World’s Ugliest Bathroom. I don’t spend a lot of time in it, though, so over the years I’ve learned to ignore its appearance and just get in and get out as quickly as I can. This year, however, I’m exploring more deeply than I ever have before the transformative power not only of joy, but also of beauty and pleasure. My master bathroom is most definitely not beautiful, so I decided to make some changes. Not a full renovation, but smaller things I could do 20

to enhance its overall appearance and maybe even create a little beauty. A new vanity and fresh coat of paint easily made the top of the list. As I made the commitment to upgrade the bathroom’s appearance I became even more acutely aware of how ugly it currently is, and a sense of urgency to change it immediately arose within me. I could barely stand to be in it another minute. I called my contractor that very day. He suggested looking in a particular retail outlet for a vanity, which I was already inclined to do, and told me that they carry the size I need in their online store. My plan with Boo was for her to help me pick a paint color that would go well with my shower and floor tiles, then look for vanities that would go well with the paint color. Once we found something online we’d go to the store and see if we could find a vanity in the same color or made by the same manufacturer, albeit in a different size, so we could get a sense of its overall quality and “rightness” for the space. During the week prior to her visit, I identified a few other things I wanted that I knew she’d be good at helping me choose, so we planned a more extended shopping trip. One of those “few other things” I wanted was something beautiful for the table in my client space, which had become the resting place of old, outdated promotional material for Solid Ground (the former name of my teaching/mentoring business). That stuff needed to go.

I had been pressuring myself to create new materials, but finally acknowledged that I was pushing against the flow of my own creative process and needed to let things ride for a bit. What I really wanted, I realized, was something beautiful to enhance the overall look and feel of the space. So “something beautiful” was added to the shopping agenda. Boo arrived in good spirits, in spite of having sat in weekend traffic on I95 far longer than she would have preferred, and we dived right into the paint color selection. Within a short amount of time we’d agreed on a handful of lovely colors that could work. I distinctly remember feeling almost relieved that we’d narrowed them down so quickly, because I didn’t want to spend any more time than I had to spend in The World’s Ugliest Bathroom. I even felt embarrassed for Boo to be “up close and personal” with all of its yukkiness. Following through with the next step in our plan, we spent some time online looking at vanity options that might work in my space with the colors we’d chosen. I had actually checked online about a week before Boo came and had found at least half a dozen vanities that looked promising. But in that moment we were hard pressed to identify more than two that were appealing, maybe three. Still, we did find those few and off we went to the store so we could see and touch some of their vanities in the 3D world. Our slight disappointment with the online selection deepened into big disappointment, bordering on disgust, with the physical models in the store. They were neither attractive nor of a high quality. I knew I wouldn’t feel comfortable ordering something sight unseen from that store and would need to look elsewhere for my vanity. We turned to the next items on my shopping list, one of which could be purchased at the store we were in, and once again were disappointed with the selection. They just didn’t have what I was looking for. Onward we went to the next store, for a different item, only to have the same experience. They didn’t have what I wanted, and what they had was either unattractive, overpriced or both. Thankfully both Boo and I kept things light and laughed at how I kept striking out. Apparently it wasn’t my day to find what I wanted. Or was it? We had just enough time before dinner to make a stop at Pier 1 Imports, where I thought I might find the “something beautiful” for the table in my client space. Pier1 is one of Boo’s favorite stores so it was a stop we were both happy to make. Once inside it didn’t take us long to zero in on an idea for creating something beautiful and unusual for my table. We started assembling and arranging various items on the floor, since there wasn’t any table space on which we could work. The more we experimented with it the more fun we had.

to try. We added things and took things away and rearranged them multiple times. We stood back and we stood close, examining our budding creation from all angles. We tried things that were clearly meant for another purpose but fit right in, anyway. We played and dabbled and tinkered. We were always in agreement with what worked and what didn’t. And finally we had it: something beautiful for my table. Unbeknownst to us, the store employees and one of the customers had been watching us with delight. They were silently cheering us on and eager to see the finished product. Once we deemed it complete, one of the employees asked if she could take a picture of it, and us, for their Instagram page. In the spirit of the moment we said yes and had fun posing for the picture. The whole experience was light, energizing, creative and fun, and we left the store in high spirits. The rest of our time together flowed beautifully and when Boo left to go home the next day I took a moment to feel deeply how blessed I am by her presence in my life. And then I took another moment to relish how sparkling and abundant my new “something beautiful” looked on my table. A little bit later, as I was reflecting on our time together, I had the “aha!” moment I mentioned at the start of this article. I realized that my disappointment with the available options for my new vanity were a direct reflection of my vibration, which was dominated by my judgments of how ugly my current bathroom is. I had gone shopping not from a pure desire to create beauty, but from an urgent need to fix a problem. I was vibrating more with what was wrong than I was with the beauty I wanted to create, and with that kind of vibration I could only experience more of what felt wrong to me. In contrast, the delightful experience we had finding something beautiful for my client room table was a direct reflection of the purity of my desire to find something beautiful. I wasn’t trying to fix a problem. I had given myself permission to want what I really wanted and simply moved in that direction with eagerness and a sense of adventure. I wasn’t trying to get rid of something unwanted. I was intending to create something new. This tale of two contrasting shopping experiences may seem trivial, but it reveals an essential principle of manifestation, regardless of whether we want a new bathroom vanity or a deeper connection with the Divine or anything in between: The energy of pure desire is life-giving and will naturally seek its own fulfillment. The key here is in the word “pure.” Pure desire is unencumbered by blame, guilt, doubt or judgment of any kind. It is the essence of the creative life force, which forever seeks new avenues of expression. In the absence of counter vibrations such as doubt and judgment, pure desire must and will be fulfilled, in harmony with the creative pulse of Life.

We were on a roll. We wandered and looked and selected new things www.livingwellmagazine.net

So as soon as we become aware of what we genuinely want to create, share or experience, we serve ourselves best by letting go of all judgments we have about whatever it is we don’t want that gave rise to the new desire. Then we can follow desire’s lead and let it guide us through its own fulfillment. I realize now that before I can create beauty in my bathroom in a way that feels joyful to me, I must first stop judging the way it currently looks. Humorous as it might be, I’ve got to stop calling it The World’s Ugliest Bathroom. It’s just a bathroom in need of some loving attention. And I need to give myself time and space to consider what I actually want in there, rather than rushing to find something to replace the ugly cabinet I don’t like. “Rushed” and “ugly” are not the vibrations I want in my creative process. I want to have fun in the experience of imagining and searching and exploring options, the way Boo and I had fun tinkering with all of those beautiful baubles at Pier1 until we found just the right combination.

primarily by the need to correct, fix or overcome something, we’re essentially focused on what we don’t want because that “something” is the foundation of our action. And that means it’s active in our vibration. So if you’re experiencing disappointment on your journey of creating something you want, first pause to give yourself fresh permission to really want it, and let yourself actually feel the purity of your desire. Then bless everything that doesn’t currently match that. Not because you’re trying to convince yourself that you love like something you don’t even like, but because you understand that judging it keeps you locked in a dance with it. Dare to turn in the direction of what you want, with the deep knowing that it is the fate of all pure desire to be realized. Relax, lighten up, and let desire lead you into its inevitable fulfillment. I must also jettison all judgments I hold against myself for having tolerated something I don’t like for so long and, instead, remind myself that my point of power is always Now. Now is the perfect time to create beauty. And Now is the perfect time for all of us to remember that we can’t get what we want by focusing on what we don’t want. Whenever we’re motivated

Top 3 Apps for Sex & Intimacy

—Sex positive, female friendly, and designed for all couples

After sorting through hundreds of Apps on the market that are in any way related to sexual health, intimacy, sexual desire, dating, relationships, sexual performance/functioning, fun & games, toys, flirting, and sex education; I found several that stood out in each category. Far too many to cover in one article… However, there were three that definitely stood above the rest when it came to helping couples with rekindling sexual desire, fostering closeness and connection in the bedroom, and learning new and creative ways of exploring sexual thoughts and fantasies.

Pillow (iOS) — This has been described as an App which ‘promises to rescue any sexless marriage.’ It includes: “30+ exercises that playfully work through a variety of fun experiences that rekindle desire, improve communication and make you feel closer. The proven exercises are written and recommended by Therapists, Coaches and Tantra Teachers. This collection of intimacy exercises - ready to start now - can transform your relationship! They’ve curated, tailored and professionally recorded a variety of intimacy exercises that you follow along to in the comfort of your own home, together” (http://pillow.io/). They recommend the App specifically for anyone who wants to strengthen their relationship; renew the spark in their marriage; or reconnect post-baby. The Pillow App highlights: —Foreplay extending, intimacy nurturing experiences —Improved communication and inspired creativity

—Follow-along sexual adventures for couples

Juicebox (iOS)—“The better sex and relationship app that puts coaches in the palm of your hand.” As per the app store description: Juicebox connects you to certified love life coaches anonymously. Some topics include relationship arguments, break-ups, performance anxiety, and more! These are real professionals. And they promise to be personalized, action-oriented, convenient, and shame-free. FYI — continued from previous page

Kindu (iOS & Android) —This App has garnered a lot of attention

for its ability to help anyone who struggles with talking about sexual fantasies, trying new things, or kinky interests. It helps couples ease the anxiety about disclosing sexual thoughts or fantasies by allowing them to go through thousands of “intimate activities” and indicate their level of interest, as: “I like this idea” or “I’m open to this idea” or “Not even on your birthday!” After each downloads the app on their own device, they can invite the other to pair with them in the app. If both partners indicate a “yes” or “maybe” to an idea/activity/fantasy, then it is shared with the other. If one of them doesn’t answer “yes” or “maybe” it is not shared and just “disappears.” They’ll never know…unless you work up the courage and/or decide it’s safe enough to share it with them on your own. It’s up to you…perhaps some delightfully dark fantasies were meant to be taken to the grave. J The Kindu App website states the goal is to “inspire intimacy in a fun and flirty way!” I think they’ve definitely hit the mark! (No pun intended…) There’s plenty more they’ve included, making it fun for couples to keep track of their shared interests, and a tracker to “check off ” some of the ones they’ve decided to explore together. To learn more, check it out at:

http://www.kindu.us/

Stay tuned for future articles featuring my favorite Apps for some of the other categories: communication apps, “fun & games,” dating/hookup apps, and self-help/educational apps. Until then, be safe and have fun!

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

Q:

I am a mess; I have been in several car accidents, a couple work injuries and I slipped and fell. Now I have Carpal tunnel syndrome in both arms, severe neck and low back pain, jaw pain, headaches and worst of all I have pain in both feet. Where do I even begin to get help?

A:

In a medical model where specialization is the norm, it is hard to know where to jump on the wagon. In the Osteopathic world, there are a few principles to understand that are most often adhered to. Looking at a person and assessing how their posture is against gravity, we start treatment from the ground up, by restoring spinal extension and cranial mobility. These are important in the presence of the symptoms you have listed. Some times attending to those basic principles will reduce the number of complaints significantly. Core problems surface from what seems to be a ball of confusion. Homeopathic remedies are helpful to clear the picture as well. Acupuncture can be of great assistance. However if further evaluation is required and more specialists are needed then the therapist may have a network that can coordinate together for a comprehesive treatment plan. A team approach may be needed for full recovery of a complicated situation. Although, a very focused osteopathic technique may address all of the above.

what is GLAUCOMA?

Q:

How young can a baby be treated ? We believe he has ribs out. How old does he have to be to be worked on?

A:

I have worked on babies in utero, worked on moms in delivery and in birth and can begin treating babies right away. Ribs can be displaced in the birth process and they are fairly easy to put back in a baby There is no age too young or too old for a love filled osteopathic treatment. To make space in the thoracic spine, the ribs will find there own way back home. The craniosacral system is most intimate with the fascial system. Together the craniosacral system offering support, protection and mobility for function and disbursement of fluids through the body. The fascial system holds the craniosacral system together, and creates communication throughout. If these two systems are healthy whether young or old, the foundation for the body as it moves three dimensionally through space is indeed enhanced. Who is at risk? While the causes for glaucoma are not completely known, we do know that risk factors for its development include family history, race and older age. Glaucoma may affect people of any age from newborns to the elderly but is more common in adults as they approach their senior years. African-Americans, Hispanics and people with diabetes are also at higher risk of getting the disease.

How is glaucoma treated? Glaucoma can be treated with any of the following: • Eye drops that lower eye pressure In a healthy eye, fluid is constantly being made and drained through a microscopic, drainage canal. When something blocks or prevents this natural drainage, the pressure inside the eye goes up. Glaucoma is often caused by increased pressure that can develop when the fluids in the eye are not draining properly. This condition eventually damages the nerve that connects the eye to the brain (the optic nerve) and leads to loss of vision. What are the symptoms for Glaucoma? While occasionally, the condition may come on suddenly; most cases progress so slowly there are often no warning signs before damage inside the eye has already occurred. In most cases, a person’s side vision (peripheral vision) is noticeably affected. 26

• Laser therapy that allows for better drainage of fluids inside the eye • Eye surgery to create a new drainage canal If not treated, glaucoma can and does lead to total blindness. Glaucoma is easily detected with a medical eye examination. Ophthalmologists (medical eye doctors) can measure the pressure inside the eye with a quick and painless, office test. Glaucoma doesn’t have to interfere with leading a happy, sighted and fulfilling life. Detecting the disease early can save your sight!

Why are you treating back pain with a pill? Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal

I once heard a comedian say, “I’m sooo upset! My muffler just fell off my car and now I have to go buy a louder stereo.” The joke makes a point that can be well applied to American health care. We spend the majority of our resources trying to mask (ignore) symptoms instead of fixing the underlying problem. The issues arising from the misdirected focus of treating symptoms is best illustrated when it comes to back pain. The standard medical approach consists of pain medication (either swallowed or injected) and is failing miserably to solve the third most costly condition facing our society and a leading cause of disability throughout the world. Add in the fact that 59 percent of all people receiving highly addictive opioids have the complaint of back pain, and you can begin to appreciate the terrible price being paid in human suffering and dollars. Let’s talk about your back. Your spinal system is a mechanical marvel. Layers of muscles course in multiple directions. Ligaments and tendons attach 24 uniquely-shaped bones that fit together like a suspended puzzle. The column forms a hollow core designed to encase your brain as it stems into the upper neck and continues down as your spinal cord. Discs connect each of the bones, absorb shock and work as a team to allow for movement. When all is in harmony, there is strength and flexibility. Most importantly, your central nervous system is given adequate protection and your nerve roots exit freely through the openings between your spinal bones. Vital nervous system communication flows from the brain cell to the tissue cell and from the tissue cell to the brain. Clarity in this system directly relates to how well your body functions and heals. There is no doubt that pain is unpleasant and can be downright debilitating. I am not trying to downplay or trivialize it, but want to shed light on a failed treatment model that sees the pain as the problem. Back pain is an alarm that your body uses to signal when damage has occurred. As a doctor of chiropractic, I am deeply concerned about a person’s pain, but focused more on what is causing it. I look specifically at all the structures involved and determine what corrective measures need to be taken. Once the underlying mechanical problem is addressed,

the body no longer sounds the alarm and pain is eliminated (naturally). There are consequences of treating back pain with medicines that should be carefully considered beyond potential adverse drug reactions and addiction that can occur. By chemically removing the pain, the underlying mechanical problem is left to persist and worsen. Additionally, drugs may allow enough time to pass for the body to fall into a state of compensation (when the muscles and connective tissues adapt to the underlying problem). At this point, the person may no longer feel pain, but the actual problem remains. Without symptoms, the condition can worsen for months or years resulting in an episode of intensified pain and greater mechanical severity (which may include irreversible arthritic degeneration). I’m sure some of you are thinking that there are exceptions. You are right! Depending on the severity and circumstances, taking pain medication may be absolutely necessary. Regardless, I urge all to consider addressing the underlying mechanical cause and see a chiropractor. You don’t have to choose and can do both concurrently. I often tell my patients that I am grateful for the medications when needed, but even happier when they are no longer necessary (which is a daily event in the office). To summarize, back pain is often a sign of an underlying mechanical issue that can impact how well your nervous system functions—influencing your whole body’s level of health and wellbeing. Ignoring alarm signals is not a winning long term strategy and often leads to greater pain and increased treatment costs down the road. Chiropractors resolve back pain by correcting the underlying causes in a safe and natural manner. Please rethink what your back pain is telling you before it gets so bad that even the loudest stereo can’t drown it out. Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal is a second-generation Doctor of Chiropractic and a past president of the Delaware Chiropractic Society. He graduated with honors from Life University in 1993. Dr. Rosenthal has an undergraduate degree in nutrition and he is a Registered Yoga Teacher. Dr. Rosenthal is an expert in the field of health and wellness and a member of the Delaware Chiropractic Society, American Chiropractic Association and International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. He practices state-of-the-art care with modern forms of chiropractic and is the first to offer the Koren Specific Technique and Biotensegrity Restoration Technique in Delaware. Also offered are chiropractic pediatric and prenatal techniques (including Webster Technique certification).
