Brian Tien architecture & design selected works 2017

Hello! My name is Brian Tien and I am currently a second-year student at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture. I’m interested in seeing how architecture can be used to respond to and enhance our constantly evolving society. Here are some of my selected works. Enjoy!

HLW International LLP Intern- January 2017- April 2017 Type: Commercial, Educational Location: New York City, United States Tools used: Revit, AutoCad, Photoshop, Indesign

During my time at HLW International LLP I was involved in both interior design and architectural projects ranging from designing and updating presentations for the renovation of a WTW office and the Fordham University. Working in primarily the design development and construction document phases, my responsibilities consisted of design development, 3D modelling, rendering and presentations. This opportunity allowed me to focus particularly on interior design for educational facilities, offices and collaboration spaces. During my time working on the renovation for Canadian Consulate of New York City, I was responsible for designing the phone booths, which incorporated a geometric acoustic wall covering system representing the northern landscapes of Canada.

Unity Park Project: Landscape/Master Plan Location: Ontario Place, Toronto Collaboration: Nick Puersten Tools used: Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator

OBJECTIVES 1. To bend and resist against the rising waters of lake Ontario 2. To introduce a variety of new, but similar climate plant ecosystems 3. To address Toronto’s lack of public outdoor pools and beaches

The entire project uses circular pathways of varying heights which allow the user to wander and experience a multitude of views from different heights and angles, which then join with buildings or land paths to strengthen its connection with the rest of Unity Park. The project attempts to unite the present and future population through providing a variety of exterior baths, a unique ecosystem and floating circular paths.

Unity Park achieves all 3 points by combining them with circular forms placed throughout the site. The area is divided into 5 different ecosystems from the same climate system as Toronto: central Europe, North Europe, North America, Hebei, China and Hokkaido, Japan. As people explore throughout the island, they are able to compare the subtle differences between vegetation from these different countries.

Parkdale Graphic Novel Library Project: Studio 2nd Term Final Location: 1303 Queen St W, Toronto Tools used: Rhino, Maxwell, Photoshop, Illustrator

The Parkdale Graphic Novel Library offers a wide variety of comics and visual-based literature. To reach out to the community and encourage interaction with the books, the library’s floor to ceiling shelves provide a new adventure at each corner. In addition to a variety of public and private reading areas, a computer room and a meeting room, the library offers a comic book studio where people of all ages from the community can come to draw and create their own comics. The design of this building was based on three principles inspired by the criteria of a successful graphic novel: visibility, layers and approachability.

The Dinner Table Project: The Grand Domestic Revolution Location: Bloor and Ossington, Toronto Tools used: Rhino, Maxwell, Photoshop, Illustrator

With the rising costs of food and rent for commercial spaces in Toronto, it becomes more difficult to maintain a restaurant while offering quality food at reasonable prices. The Dining Table promotes the cooking and cuisine as a communal activity, where the kitchen is a thriving environment. The restaurant space can be rented out to either amateur or professional chefs for dinner events, without the commitment of a long-term lease. Similarly, the residents share large communal kitchens in an open plan shared with the dining spaces. As a result, the combination of the spaces creates an environment where cooking becomes a social activity.

[B]ridge Project: SSEF Competition 2016 Location: Along the Scarborough Bluffs, Toronto, Canada Collaborators: Nicole Yip Tools used: Rhino, Vray, Photoshop, Illustrator

In order to showcase the scenic views of Toronto as well promote the use of cycling as a form of transportation, the concept of (B)ridge was devised. While there were various trails that showcased the nature of the Scarborough Bluffs as well as its neighboring lake Ontario, there were none that seemed to captivate both simultaneously. By connecting two preexisting bike paths located on the edge of the Scarborough Bluffs Park, (B)ridge not only provides a unique cycling experience over the Lake Ontario, but also a beautiful scenery for its users.

Re(leaf) Project: Bee Breeders Architecture Competition Cannabis Bank 2016 Location: 4 Boswell Ave, Toronto, Canada Collaborators: Brandon Lim, Nicole Yip, Ruth Lee Tools used: Rhino, Maxwell, Photoshop, Illustrator

With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pushing for legalization recreational cannabis, its arrival seems to be inevitable. However, a significant amount of resistance against this topic is still present, and legalization must undergo a series of social and political obstacles. Thus, a dispensary designed to counter the stigmatization of marijuana in Canada, and other countries around the world, should cater to its transitional time period prior to legalization.

Transitional Space The legal status of marijuana of Canada is unpredictable, thus the spaces of the dispensary are designed to reflect the evolving politics concerning legalization. In American states where recreational cannabis is legal, restaurants have demonstrated that using weed-infused cuisine to reach out to different members of the community have been extremely successful. The kitchen area seeks to achieve this, but is also part of the education room which can be divided to one’s desire with a moveable partition wall.
