EDITOR’ LETTER 2

’S EXPRESSION COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS, SHAPES AND SIZES. EXPRESSION CAN ALSO COME IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. EXPRESSION IS SOMETHING THAT ALLOWS YOU TO TRULY TELL THE WORLD HOW YOU REALLY FEEL. IT MAKES YOU REAL. IT FORMS A PART OF YOU, AND EVENTUALLY, SOMETHING INSEPARABLE. IN THIS FIRST ISSUE OF CDEFGH, WE WILL EXPLORE THE DIFFERENT WAYS OF SOME SELECTED INDIVIDUALS ON HOW THEY GO ABOUT EXPRESSING THEMSELVES IN THEIR COURSE OF STUDY IN LASALLE. AND ALSO SOME INSIGHTS ON HOW LASALLE HAS ENABLED THEM TO PURSUE THEIR CHOICE OF MEDIUM. WHO KNOWS, YOUR WAY OF EXPRESSION MIGHT BE THE SAME AS SOME OF THEM! ENJOY! BRIAN.

During the first two decades, the gallery also developed the LASALLE Collection, acquiring significant paintings and sculptures by Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, Lim Cheng Hoe, Seah Kim Joo, Chua Ek Kay, Jimmy Ong, Ang Kiu Kok, Sutee Kunavichayanont and the founder of LASALLE, Brother Joseph McNally, among others. From 1996 to 2003, the gallery was directed by Binghui Huangfu, who curated major exhibitions of international contemporary art, with an emphasis on visual arts from Asia. Highlights include In and Out, Text & Subtext: International Contemporary Asian Women Artists Exhibition, Site + Sight: Translating Cultures and Compound Eyes: Contemporary Visual Art from China. The programme was refocused under the directorship of Eugene Tan (2003–08), during which time the gallery staged solo exhibitions by international artists including Antony Gormley, On Kawara and Lim Tzay Chuen. In keeping with the gallery’s increased focus on research emerging from LASALLE, it was renamed the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore in 2004; and in 2007, it published a comprehensive publication on contemporary art in Singapore.

CDEFGH: ISSUE #1– EXPRESSIONS // The College Backstory

Founded in 1986 as the Dr Earl Lu Gallery, named in recognition of a major donation by Dr Earl Lu to support teaching and learning at LASALLE, ICA Singapore has played a unique and significant role in the Southeast Asian contemporary art scene for over 30 years.

In 2007, LASALLE College of the Arts moved to its current award-winning campus designed by RSP Architects on McNally Street. With this new development, LASALLE’s ICA Singapore was repurposed, inhabiting a new, dramatically increased footprint of seven galleries. In 2010, Charles Merewether was appointed Director. During Merewether’s tenure, the gallery maintained a dynamic exhibition and publishing programme, presenting numerous exhibitions of the works of LASALLE students and staff, along with landmark solo presentations by artists including Roberto Chabet (2011) and Tang Da Wu (2013). Melbourne-born curator Bala Starr joined LASALLE’s ICA Singapore as Director in November 2013. Previously, she was Senior Curator at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne, where she developed major single-artist projects and surveys, and thematic exhibitions. Under her direction, LASALLE’s ICA Singapore closely collaborates with artists to explore new models for curatorial practice and exhibition development.

Band

Do you think that your course of study has enabled you to express yourself through the medium choice that you are currently pursuing? Yes.

Thean Yian

Not entirely as of yet, because I’m still trying to understand the fundamentals of Jazz, still in mimicry, and so I’ve yet to become fluent in the medium in order to express myself concisely and fluently.

Eldon

Eldon Theadore, BA Contemporary Music (Jazz), Level 1

Brian

Why La’salle?

Grace

Because I’ve seen successful musicians who were graduates of Lasalle.

Brian

Is there any particular module the interests you the most? Why?

Grace

In my opinion, the best Bachelor in Music in Singapore!

Principle Studies. Because I can work on my weaknesses.

Alim

Jazz ensemble because it progressively introduces us to jazz music and performing.

Alim Thean Yian Eldon

It’s the only place around with Jazz. Because of Lasalle’s contemporary approach to music, which is what my interest is more directed towards.

Brian

How would you define ‘Expression’?

Grace

To be able to channel out our feelings through our playing of music.

Alim

It’s the act of channeling emotions out to the general audience.

Thean Yian

The creation of any medium that is a reflection of the individual self.

Eldon

Speaking from the heart about one’s thoughts and feelings through a medium.

Thean Yian

Ensemble. That module is the whole course essentially, playing jazz music and whatnot.

Eldon

Ensemble Workshop. Because we get to dig deeper and understand the core of what makes this art form that we have chosen to express ourselves on and understand how we can contribute to the music.

Brian

Do you think that making music as a group is able to express a certain feel of music compared to making music as an individual?

Grace

Making music as a group makes me more excited as I can communicate my feelings with my groupmates.

Alim

Yes, it’s feeding different emotions to each other and reacting to them.

21

Eldon

Brian

It expresses a different feel, and if the group is well aware of each other’s musical intentions, then it would be reflected in the music. It would be akin to watching an engaging discussion, with the active development of musical ideas and concepts. Yes of course. In my opinion, I prefer making music in a group setting because you get a mix of everybody’s ideas and personalities which for me, really makes the music alive and enjoyable as opposed to playing as an individual, but that’s whole other story own its own. Given a choice, would you choose another way or medium to express yourself other than music? Why?

Grace

No. Because music has always been my way of expressing my feelings.

Alim

Probably not because I feel that music is a complete tool to channel out whatever expression I have.

Thean Yian

I would. Music is but one way of expression. There are many ways of expression, and it would more holistic as a person to be well versed in a multitude of arts. In a way, they all help to bolster each other, and to know more mediums of expression will help with expression itself.

Eldon

I would, but not at the moment, as I am still developing my ability to fully utilize this art form as a platform for expression and I would like to focus on mastering this art first. Maybe somewhere in the future, I would find other means of expression.

Give us a short introduction of yourself.

Stacey

Hello, my name is Stacey and I’m from Diploma in Fine Arts, Year 2!

Brian

Why La’salle?

Stacey

Lasalle was known for conceptualizing works. Hence the correlation to my belief that photography shouldn’t just be based on technicality but also conceptualizing your pieces to make it a visual narrative and with this, I felt that Lasalle would help me further develop my concepts better.

Brian

How would you define ‘Expression’?

Stacey

I would say it’s having your own distinctive style and being able to express it freely.

Brian

Do you think that your course of study has enabled you to express yourself through the medium choice that you are currently pursuing?

Stacey

I believe so but I also feel that it depends on your lecturer to further develop your style and practice because anyone can have their own style but to really make it your brand where people can associate it with you is another.

Brian

Is there any particular module that interests you the most? Why?

Stacey

Art Photography definitely. It’s where I get to explore the different aspects of photography and it is different than what most would consider photography to be. Sometimes, it’s not about what you shoot with, but how you shoot it.

Brian

How do you express yourself through your photography or what do you inspire or hope to express to your audience?

Stacey

Personally, I have always liked the dark arts style. Go look up Dark Arts Photography and you would get a totally underground side of photography! I have always felt that photography should not be just solely on technicality but also the various perspectives and angles you can play with. I intend to invoke emotions through my photographs with a sense of movement, transiency and appreciation of beauty through a frozen moment in time.

Brian

Would you have chosen another medium to express your ideas or feelings if you had an option?

Stacey

For me, being in Fine Arts means that I have to explore and experiment with different medium and I do enjoy it too because I can further develop my skills and in future, I can implement different types of mediums to my practice.

“One of the favourite memories I have would be my days of flying and travelling around the world. When I used to work for the airlines, one of my fondest memory would be the clouds because that was the view of my “office”. It helped me discover my passion for photography! When I first started shooting back in 2013, I liked taking photos but now, I would say it’s definitely my passion! The places and people that were a part of this phase in my life helped me realised that.”

28

“Athens was my favourite place to shoot. There was so much to see and the vibes were truly one of a kind. This photo was actually taken with an iPhone 6! Many would say that what you shoot with is what determines your shoot but I have always believed that it is how YOU shoot and how you create a new perspective with the composition of the photograph! Of Course, this skill isn’t instant and will take years of experimenting and exploring but the journey is so worth it because you create so many different photos that make you stand out from other photographers!”

29

30

31

“This was taken in Melbourne and it was my getaway place. Most of my photos are about making places seem timeless because we’re always moving forward and sometimes, it can get stressful and fast paced that sometimes I just want to have a reminder that it’s okay to slow down and take your time. There’s no rush in getting to places, I feel it’s the journey that is important.”

32

33

“This was taken in China, Qingdao Pier. A lot of people have this idea of china being really smelly and crowded which was actually the total opposite! There were so many good opportunities for shots there! I would definitely say you have to visit China, at least once in your life because it is a truly different experience than what most people would describe.

34

“This photo was actually taken as a joke. I was in the toilet and I was waiting for my friend, I looked in the mirror and I was like hey! I should try something! What happens after that, I have Unsplash to thank! Haha it went viral and appeared on Youtube, I’m truly grateful for what it has become! So I totally would recommend people to keep experimenting because who knows, your cheeky photo could actually get you recognised!”

CDEFGH: ISSUE #1– EXPRESSIONS // Expressing Expressions // Fashion, Expression With Fabrics

Danessa

Y.K

Give us a short introduction of yourselves. Danessa Tong, Diploma in Fashion Media, Year 2. I’m Yuan Kun, you can call me YK. Fashion Media.

When I was 6 years old, my brother was 17 and doing a Diploma in Fashion in Lasalle, at that point I never knew an art school existed, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as an art school but watching my brother being so passionate about art, made me grow an interest in art and Lasalle became my dream school, ever since then I started doing art when I got into secondary school where my passion and interest for art grew. I can feel the freedom and good vibes in Lasalle. Since the first time I visited this school, everything especially the building catch my eyes. I know I want to study here. How would you define ‘Expression’?

Danessa

Expression to me is all about expressing myself, how I do it and how it makes me feel and I do so with fashion. Expressing myself with clothes is not about how nicely I’m dressed (cause anyway this is subjective) or what brands I’m wearing but it’s about how I present myself, the confidence it gives me, this affects how I feel and that’s what fashion means to me. I think is express your feeling in action or words!

Do you think that your course of study has enabled you to express yourself through the medium choice that you are currently pursuing?

Danessa

Yes, in fact very much. So what I do in Fashion Media includes most aspects of a fashion magazine publication and these aspects of design comes with a strong or a distinct sense of personal style. Designing magazines, booklets etc has become my way of expressing myself and sending a message to the people who are unsure about their own sense of style.

Y.K

Good question, and now I am asking myself what is my pursuing… It’s too hard for me to say now. I don’t know really know who am I, and still finding myself. But I really like last year’s personality booklet project, it made me know more people in the creative industry and become friends with them.

Brian

Is there any particular module that interests you the most? Why?

Why Lasalle?

Brian

Y.K

Brian

Danessa

Y.K

Creative Direction is a module we have that teaches us about art direction, personally, it interests me the most because it is the one module that teaches me how to express my every idea or thought, into words, into art, into design, into my work and everything I produce. I think is the brand booklet is 3 modules’ project. I am doing with my 3 baby girls that’s why interests me the most. I like to work with them together because they are good people, with them together always have good energy, good vibes and good time.

41

Brian

Danessa

They play a big part in how I express myself. Most of the time, how I present myself is how I want people to see me. My sense of style is very colorful and bright but for the most part, I’m an introvert and I only get loud or playful when I’m with the company that I’m very comfortable with, so clothes are kind what I use to cover up for my insecurities and the side of myself I don’t want people to see. No, nowadays go to school I am just lazy to dress up. I will wear black or white tee, choose the simplest clothes to wear so no need to waste so much energy and time to style. I would like to dress up myself more last time, unfortunately Singapore is too hot, I kinda give up… So nowadays I just wear white tee or black tee… Choose the most comfortable clothes to wear… When I have mood I will style more, but depends on where am I going. But I think my clothes now don’t really express my particular mood and personality most of the time now.

Brian

Do you think that clothes are enough to express one’s personality? If you could add your own touch to a piece of clothing to show more of one’s personality, what would that add-on be?

Danessa

I think clothes are everything when it comes to expressing one’s personality cause it is really about how I present myself and that is the kind of impression people will have on me, that is until they get to really know me. Customizing clothes like buying second hand or thrifted clothes and wearing that with trendy clothes for example pairing a thrifted top that’s like $5 with a ‘Hypebeast’-brand pants that’s $100, that is my way of adding my own touch to show my personality and really there’s no rule or fixed way to how you do it because it’s really subjective and personal to every personality almost like a thumbprint.

Y.K

I don’t think is enough to express one’s personality. You never know who are them, and what do they think. If I could add and definitely will be the necklace and rings.

Brian

Give us a short introduction of yourself.

Justinn

Hi, my name is Justinn Matthew Lim and I’m currently a Year 2 student pursuing a Diploma in Broadcast Media. Why La’salle?

Justinn

My NITEC GPA wasn’t eligible enough to go to Poly, so my options are to either enlist, go to Higher NITEC, go to NAFA or Lasalle or private schools. I wanted to take something film related so I enrolled for Higher Nitec in Filmmaking and also Lasalle (Because Lasalle campus looks more refreshing than Nafa, Nafa look like prison lol) I actually got accepted in Higher Nitec, but Lasalle also accepted me, so I was in a dilemma, so I thought “Diploma should be a better option” I chose Lasalle.

Brian

How would you define ‘Expression’?

Justinn

Expression is a form of work that reflects about your interest, passion and personality. For me, I express myself through videography and photography. Everybody has a different eye of visual, I just like to express whatever that is going on in my head or in my life through filmmaking and still photography.

Do you think that your course of study has enabled you to express yourself through the medium choice that you are currently pursuing?

Justinn

Yes, I’ve done a fraction of assignments that allows me to express myself and my interests, such as doing documentaries that about street culture which I’ve been very into since I was in Secondary School.

Brian

Is there any particular module that interests you the most? Why?

Justinn

Studio Practice and Video Production. For Studio Practice, it allows me to interact with different people that shares the same interest with me. Whereas for Video Production, I get to get my hands dirty on filmmaking equipments which I really enjoy because in my opinion, you can have whatever creativity that’s going on in your head, but your technicality must be good enough to execute your ideas.

49

Brian

Is BM difficult for you to express your style of shooting? Why? BM, comparing to other film courses in other schools only teaches the surface in filmmaking, to put it simple, we don’t get to learn a lot of practical work, that’s one thing we lack, and that leads to me being uncapable of expressing my style of shooting MORE.

Brian

Outside of BM, do you have any other activities you do that allows you to be who you are? In what way did it allow you to express yourself?

Justinn

I just started being a freelance lighting grip outside in the industry. That allows me to express myself because I love doing things hands-on. To be who I want to be (Cinematographer), I need to know the basics and have to start from knowing the placement of lightings and why is it placed that way, it may be a long route, but I hope I can master the craft of lighting and I can move on to doing camera work.

CDEFGH: ISSUE #1– EXPRESSIONS // Expressing Expressions // Moving Images 2, Expression in Motion

Aeriqah

Brian

Give us a short introduction of yourself. I’m Aeriqah, a Year 2 student from the Diploma in Broadcast Media.

Brian

Is there any particular module that interests you the most? Why?

Aeriqah

I enjoy my editing module as I’ve always found editing to be a therapeutic process. Also, I’m looking forward to my scriptwriting module next year because I’ve always been a writer first so I feel I express myself best with writing scripts as opposed to the more technical aspects like lighting or camerawork.

Why La’salle? Being in Lasalle comes with a kind of freedom I don’t find in other schools; be it dressing a little different, or experimenting with different kinds of art forms, mediums and concepts, we’re allowed to experiment and I appreciate that. How would you define ‘Expression’?

Aeriqah

Expression, to me, is finding ways to translate what I feel on the inside to something tangible, visual or audible, in a way that other people can see or experience too.

Brian

Do you think that your course of study has enabled you to express yourself through the medium choice that you are currently pursuing?

Aeriqah

Being in BM has helped hold me accountable to keep creating, and find new ways to express myself.

Brian

Is BM difficult for you to express your style of shooting? Why?

Aeriqah

Being in BM is great because there aren’t many restrictions to what I can and cannot get away with. I’m not the best with the technical bits, so I’m always finding different ways to shoot, and it’s not considered to be wrong. Just different.

Brian

Outside of BM, do you have any other activities you do that allows you to be who you are? In what way did it allow you to express yourself?

Aeriqah

Outside of Lasalle, I’m a singersongwriter. I don’t think I can do solely music or solely film. I can’t have one without the other, because it balances me. Music helps fulfill sides of me that making films cannot do for me. I’ve always been a writer first, and sometimes the right medium to express it is in a song and not a script.
