A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of BRIC, I am delighted to share this annual report highlighting the high quality accessible arts and media programming made possible by your continued and generous support, as well as the responsible fiscal stewardship that helps ensure that your gifts are put to good use. BRIC has always sought to reflect the diversity of Brooklyn, and this past fiscal year—with the much-anticipated opening of the award-winning BRIC House—BRIC’s capacity to advance its mission has advanced to a new level. BRIC House has quickly become a vibrant public gathering space and a center for creativity and expression. I thank my colleagues on the Board of Directors, who support and sustain BRIC through wise counsel, tireless encouragement, and fierce commitment. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the staff at BRIC—especially their visionary leader, Leslie Schultz—whose dedication and passion make BRIC the robust cultural destination it has so quickly become.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF BRIC PHOTO: ALEASE ANNAN

What an incredible year we are featuring in this Annual Report. BRIC Arts | Media House is no longer merely a vision to embody our mission to nurture artists and makers and welcome audiences from around the borough; it is a dynamic, catalytic reality. BRIC House, which opened in late 2013, is a vital cultural home for Brooklyn. We feel embraced by our neighbors in the Brooklyn Cultural District and, in our first year alone, we welcomed more than 106,000 visitors from Brooklyn and beyond. BRIC’s programming has been inspired and transformed by our new home. We have presented 348 performing artists and 93 visual artists and connected 3,800 makers to new media and technology—all within the first eight months of opening. This unrivaled range of arts and media programming is remarkable. The journey to opening BRIC House is one of BRIC’s proudest achievements in our institutional history. The road to BRIC House, in many ways, has been paved with the gemstones of our Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival, which dazzled 200,000 music lovers last summer. Our work would not be possible without the commitment of our dedicated Board of Directors, talented staff, passionate volunteers, and the vision of the artists and media makers. Above all else, your support makes our continued success possible, and we are truly grateful.

Leslie G. Schultz President 4

BRIC MISSION STATEMENT BRIC presents contemporary art, performing arts, and community media programs that reflect Brooklyn’s creativity and diversity. BRIC also provides resources to launch, nurture, and showcase artists and media makers. We advance access to and understanding of arts and media by presenting free and low-cost programming and by offering education and other public programs to people of all ages.

EXCEPTIONAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

One Hot Summer!

What a vibrant and joyous summer season at Celebrate Brooklyn!—complete with dozens of free performances and a handful of benefit concerts. This may go down as the summer that rocked Brooklyn. Here are some of our favorites. 7

Our New Home The opening of BRIC House began with a joyous block party and unforgettable performances. Two-time Grammy Award winner and Reggae legend, Burning Spear graced the main stage at BRIC House with a free program during opening weekend and riveted the audience. The inaugural concert set the tone for artistic excellence and inspiration at BRIC House. It brought the essence of our Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival indoors.

EXCEPTIONAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

Housewarming: Notions of Home from the Center of the Universe Twelve Brooklyn-based artists, who work in various artistic media, explored the idea of “home” as a concept from the literal to the emotional interpretation. 12

Transcommunality: Laura Anderson Barbata, Collaboration Beyond Borders An exhibition that was a decade in the making. The artist captured the vitality of the stilt walking traditions of communities in Trinidad, Mexico, and Brooklyn via sculptural objects, photographs, videos, and projections. 13

EXCEPTIONAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

Ronald K. Brown/ Evidence, A Dance Company

The essence of Ron Brown’s work is a celebration of the spectrum of people that make up our community. His residency at BRIC House embodies BRIC’s ethos of artistic excellence and community engagement. His performance showed us how art can be a collective experience. “In On Earth Together, Brown showcases 30 community members between the ages of 8 to 77 performing alongside the company.” — Time Out New York, Nov 14, 2013

WOW (Work-in-Progress) We fostered artistic experimentation, which allowed the artists to move their project forward and challenged the staff to work across disciplines. Audiences grew each night and exceeded expectations. The performance activated all of our performance spaces. This could only have taken place at BRIC House. 18

CASSANDRA (Work-in-Progress) Helga Davis gave a jaw-dropping performance/installation with her residency team in re-imaging the story of a mythological character, Cassandra, who possessed an ability to perceive things that were just about to happen— like the end of her own life. 19

Art Into Music Exhibition The exhibition featured sculptures, paintings, video, and other mediums by more than a dozen influential artists, whose works took inspiration from a wide range of music. In many ways, it illuminated BRIC’s cross-disciplinary mission, creating a highly accessible show enjoyed by over 6,000 Brooklynites. 20

ARTISTIC INTERSECTIONS

To witness BRIC’s mission of enabling artistic collisions across disciplines is to experience art at a whole new level.
