A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Over the past year, our stages, screens, and galleries were graced by award-winning artists and enabled the discovery of emerging ones; we incubated media makers and community storytellers and provided platforms for their stories; and we ignited learning at public schools, community centers, and libraries across the borough. These pages bring to life BRIC’s commitment to creative risktaking, rooted in a broad and inclusive definition of excellence— for Brooklyn, by Brooklyn. As I reflect with you on the rich array of programming celebrated in these pages, I am excited to let you know that we have completed our human-centered strategic planning process, which charts a path for the next four years of work. The process also led us to a re-articulation of our mission and the creation of our first vision and value statement. Thank you to all of you who contributed your perspectives as part of this process. I am particularly grateful for the dedication and leadership of our Board of Directors and staff, whose partnership was critical to the success of this effort. Together, we envision a Brooklyn where all people have meaningful connections to artistic experiences, the tools and opportunity to express their creative potential, and the power to transform their world. Now the hard work begins.

I am delighted to share BRIC’s 2019 Annual Report, which highlights the boundless creative energy and potential of Brooklyn.

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR It's a pleasure to share BRIC's Fiscal 2019 Annual Report. This document celebrates the full breadth and scope of BRIC’s programming across visual arts, performing arts, community media, and education. As you'll see, BRIC presented an exceptionally diverse range of programs over the past year. All under one roof. All executed with excellence. Accessible to all. As always, BRIC continued its commitment to fiscal discipline and financial stability. This year, BRIC saw steady growth in our operating revenue and once again invested in our Boarddesignated funds. Looking forward, I'm thrilled to start implementing BRIC's recently completed strategic plan. It represents months of collaboration, preparation, and attention to detail between the board, staff, and a wide range of creators and consumers of BRIC's programming. Together, we'll discover new opportunities for synergy across our disciplines, raise increased awareness of our work, and take steps to ensure BRIC’s long-term financial sustainability. None of this will be possible without your support. We're inspired by what comes next for BRIC and grateful for your commitment to our work. We ignite learning in people of all ages. Our education offering has served hundreds of thousands of children and adults of all ages throughout the years. Between BRIC’s media center and its variety of free and low-cost, high-quality film, TV, and podcasting courses, and our in-school and afterschool programs in 35 public schools and from 19 neighborhoods, we serve approximately 10,000 people annually. This year we continued the Documentary Intensive Program, a two-time New York Emmy Award-nominated initiative, which selects a group of 12 Brooklynites and trains them in the process of documentary filmmaking from start to finish. We also offer several fellowships and programs designed to build creativity and media skills among high school students. The annual Youth Media Fellowship provides a group of media-savvy local high school students the opportunity to organize and curate Concrete Stories, a film and media festival that showcases pieces produced by New York City youth under age 21.

We advance opportunity for visual artists, performers, and media makers. Over the years, we have developed several high-profile artist residency programs for visual artists, performers, and media makers. By providing space, resources, marketing assistance, and production support, BRIC allows these artists to thrive and grow their work and continue to impact our community through art and media. This year, we once again hosted a BRIClab performance residency and BRICworkspace visual arts residency for more than 35 artists. We also commissioned a wide range of visual artists to show new work in our gallery, including a monumental sculpture by Penelope Umbrico made up of broken and semi-functional LCD TVs. Our commitment to support and promote the hundreds of Community Producers working on television and podcast content for Emmy Award-winning Brooklyn Free Speech is unwavering. Among our artists-in-residence, the groundbreaking dance group Urban Bush Women hosted community dance classes and Hair Parties, and presented their timely and provocative piece Hair & Other Stories.

This year alone we commissioned several projects, art pieces, and performances, including an all-female performance of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, presented over the summer at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, which Time Out New York calls “one of the best things to happen in NYC every summer.”

We elevate bold work on stages, in galleries, on media platforms, and beyond. In addition to the exciting performing arts programs such as BRIC JazzFest and the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, we present award-winning, innovative television and podcast programming that showcases underrepresented voices, as well as cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions that bring current issues to the forefront of the conversation. In the Fall of 2018, BRIC TV’s Dinette debuted to a soldout audience at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it was recognized as an official selection and received praise from the likes of The New Yorker, Bust, and Vice, which called it “a funny, candid portrayal of living as a non-binary millennial.” BRIC Radio premiered TELL, a new podcast serving queer stories on queer terms. Host Drae Campbell brings real stories told by the queer folks who lived them, on everything from traveling abroad to stolen bikes to family secrets.

Brooklyn-based artist Mary Mattingly presented What Happens After featuring a deconstructed and creatively transformed 19,000-pound military cargo truck as the centerpiece of the exhibition. Hyperallergic called it “an exhibition whose power is revealed slowly, by walking through and around each of the torn pieces of the truck”.

We unite Brooklyn through art and creativity to build community and make change. Both inside BRIC House and outside our walls, we work and collaborate with a wide range of community partners and other organizations to leverage art and creativity to bring about transformation in our community. In early 2019, we commissioned the Future Historical Society, a multi-generational team of community members that created a neighborhood archive honoring the histories of our changing community, while transforming our vision for the future. The FHS Mobile Storytelling Lab debuted at the 2019 BRIC OPEN, and continues to tour the borough. In partnership with University Settlement's Performance Project, Atlantic Terminal, and Ingersoll Cornerstone Community Center, BRIC produces the Intergenerational Community Arts Council, a team of residents who develop values-driven arts programming by and for community members of the Ingersoll, Whitman, Farragut, and Atlantic Terminal NYCHA houses and surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods.

PARTNERSHIP CASE STUDY University Settlement In building relationships with organizational partners, BRIC offers multiple points of entry for our partners to engage with our audiences and the resources we offer. Many of these collaborations then grow and develop over time. University Settlement is a social service institution that each year helps over 25,000 low-income and at-risk people build better lives for themselves and their families. Our collaboration began when BRIC and University Settlement developed the Intergenerational Community Arts Council (ICAC) at Ingersoll Cornerstone Community Center. The ICAC is a multigenerational team of public housing residents and neighbors from Fort Greene and Downtown Brooklyn who work together to produce public art programming and actively shape the artistic and cultural life in their community. University Settlement then applied to and was selected for BRIC’s New York Emmy-winning Media Share program. Through Media Share, BRIC helps nonprofit organizations learn how to create and use media. Together, University Settlement and BRIC created a series of videos to help promote and inform the public about their work. In 2020, BRIC will deepen our collaboration with University Settlement through the NYC Complete Count Fund. Together, we will create compelling public service announcements that amplify the voices of everyday New Yorkers about the importance of the upcoming Census to services such as public housing and Head Start.

We created media content for our homebound senior program to keep our homebound elders mentally and physically well and connected to us even when we can’t see them every day. I loved every second of the program. We got the perfect mentor. The videos were really personal, and our seniors looked so great. One of the best parts of the partnership is that we then took what we learned and continued to use it. Our staff person has created two more videos.
