A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, I am delighted to share this Annual Report surveying BRIC’s fiscal year 2016. BRIC’s core value is Arts for All and we remain deeply committed to providing high-quality and accessible cultural programming. Our robust arts and media education programs, beloved outdoor summer performance festival, familyfriendly events, and renowned contemporary art exhibitions provide hundreds of thousands of people with multiple access points to the arts and media. And we touch well over a million more with our Brooklynfocused, award-winning original programming by BRIC TV. Now more than ever, BRIC is engaged and embedded within Brooklyn’s diverse communities, continuing to amplify voices from across the borough in innovative ways. I invite you to learn more about the impact of BRIC’s ground-breaking, multidisciplinary programming. I am so proud to serve as the Chair of BRIC’s Board of Directors, whose stewardship and dedication continually inspire me. I’m also eternally grateful for the extraordinary vision and leadership of Leslie Schultz, BRIC’s President. On behalf of BRIC’s Board of Directors and staff, a warm thank you to the donors, artists, media-makers, and other friends who enable BRIC to thrive! With all good wishes,

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT PHOTO: RYAN HANDT
What a year it was! BRIC’s work and place on the Brooklyn cultural landscape was taken to a whole new level, a great result of team work by our Board, our talented and dedicated staff, and of course our generous supporters. BRIC’s work to tell Brooklyn stories through BRIC TV enjoyed an audience of more than a million people. Hundreds of community members participated in BRIC programs to amplify community voices, particularly through our Brooklyn Free Speech TV programs. Hundreds of artists participated in our residency and commissioning programs, and 300,000 people attended our live programs. BRIC House is now a destination for cultural programming, community conversations, and more. Our inaugural BRIC JazzFest featured some of the most exciting jazz legends alongside local emerging talent. In Prospect Park, our most well-known and beloved program, the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, offered another summer of world-class performances. Our contemporary art exhibition program led the way in sharing the work of Brooklyn artists. And, across the borough, through partnerships with Brooklyn’s public schools and libraries, BRIC connected teaching artists and media makers with youth and adults to share the transformative power of art and life-long learning. The BRIC of today simply would not be possible without the leadership of our Board of Directors, our remarkable staff, the generosity of our members and donors, and the creative vision of artists and media makers. Thank you – together we have created an institution that truly is quintessentially Brooklyn.
Leslie G. Schultz President 4

BRIC Jazzfest 2015 “The sound [at BRIC’s inaugural JazzFest] was first-rate at each of three stages, and drifting among them was easy. . . . The music ran strictly on time. A lot of musicians stuck around after their sets to hear their peers. None of this should be taken for granted. . . . But, in a sense, it might have been expected. The powers behind BRIC JazzFest have experience with this sort of thing . . .” –

UNITING OUR COMMUNITY BRIC’s Media Education classes and resources extend beyond BRIC House to public libraries across Brooklyn. In FY2016, more than 1,500 people took classes at these off-site facilities.
Roger Guenveur Smith received a Bessie for outstanding production for his performance of Rodney King at BRIC Arts | Media House. “For a powerful and timely performance using gesture, voice, and historical document to link the personal tragedy of Rodney King’s life to our national tragedies of racism and police brutality. For extending that conversation into the street in an improvised post-show town hall that evolved into a peaceful demonstration in reaction to the Eric Garner case unfolding in New York City.”
