A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, It is a pleasure to share this Annual Report, celebrating the full scope of BRIC programming in fiscal year 2017. From BRIC’s arts and media education programs, to our welcoming summer performing arts festival and family programs, to our renowned contemporary art exhibitions and groundbreaking media content, BRIC remains steadfast in our commitment to Arts for All. I hope you will feel as inspired as I do as you page through this report and learn more about the impact of BRIC’s high-quality and accessible cultural programming on artists, students, media makers, and community residents across Brooklyn. These programs enriched the lives of hundreds of thousands of live event participants and engaged more than two million media viewers over the course of the year. As you will see in the enclosed financials, BRIC also continued is commitment to fiscal discipline and financial stability, with steady growth in net assets and operating revenue. We also continued to grow our Board-designated investment funds. This extraordinary programmatic breadth and strong financial health is a testament to the leadership and vision of BRIC’s President, Leslie G. Schultz. BRIC would not be where it is today, were it not for Leslie’s stewardship. As we’ve shared with many of you, Leslie will be stepping down in June 2018, just as BRIC begins a year-long celebration of our 40th anniversary. My dedicated Board colleagues and I look forward to a smooth transition and the next chapter of BRIC’s remarkable story. On behalf of BRIC’s Board of Directors, thank you for all that you do to support BRIC’s core value of Arts for All—today and for the next 40 years.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT PHOTO: JULIENNE SCHAER

BRIC’s 2017 Annual Report celebrates another great year at BRIC: a year of extraordinary cultural experiences, including the brand-new BRIC OPEN Festival, new initiatives in our decades-long work to support diverse Brooklyn artists and media makers, and of course, projects that reflect and advance our ongoing commitment to the principle of Arts for All. The programming highlighted here, made available without charge or at very low cost to our audiences, was the result of true collaboration among our Board, our staff, and of course — our generous supporters. BRIC’s effort to tell compelling Brooklyn stories through BRIC TV, and celebrate creative expression by people who too often go unheard through Brooklyn Free Speech TV, attracted a digital audience of more than two million people and critical acclaim, including 19 New York Emmy nominations. BRIC House welcomed 100,000 attendees for cultural programming, family events, community discussions, and more, while close to 200,000 people attended our world-class BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. Local emerging talent shared the stage with artistic legends, while exhibitions, commissions, and an expanded residency program advanced the work and careers of Brooklyn artists. We launched Brooklyn’s newest podcasting network, BRIC Radio, as well as an HD channel dedicated exclusively to community voices. And across the borough, a record number of young people and adults discovered their own creative voices as they connected with BRIC teaching artists and media makers at public schools and libraries. The opportunity to reflect on BRIC’s reach and accomplishments is all the more meaningful as I prepare to step down as President of BRIC in June 2018, after thirteen years at BRIC. The remarkable growth of BRIC since 2005 would not have been possible without the commitment and leadership of our Board of Directors, the dedication and talent of our staff, the generosity of our members and donors, and the creativity of the artists and media makers we serve. Together, we have created a cultural institution that reflects and amplifies the rich vibrancy of Brooklyn. Thank you.

Leslie G. Schultz President 4

BRIC MISSION STATEMENT BRIC presents programs in contemporary art, performing arts, and video that reflect the creativity and diversity of Brooklyn. BRIC also advances and nurtures emerging voices and worksin-progress by local artists and media makers. BRIC supports open access to arts and media by making programs available without charge or at very low cost, through education and public programs, and by enabling and amplifying individual and community voices.

BRIC Biennial: Volume II, Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights Edition The largest and most ambitious exhibition organized by BRIC to date, the BRIC Biennial: Volume II featured 40+ artists, spread out over four venues: BRIC House, Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library, FiveMyles, and Weeksville Heritage Center. “Started in 2014, the BRIC Biennial has quickly found its niche in the city’s art scene: a high-quality showcase of Brooklyn artists that’s actually held in the borough, closer than Manhattan galleries and fairs and more focused than the chaos of open studios.” -

#BHeard Town Hall Cops and Community: Innovations Around Policing “Most of the harm that’s caused by violent policing has less to do with numbers of people killed, but rather the daily mundane harassment that young people of color face in their communities on a daily basis. Thousands and thousands of them aren’t getting killed, but are suffering from the violence of policing.”

BRIC TV | Brooklynification “Brooklyn has spawned a lot of web series — maybe too many — but a new one that turned up roughly a week ago, Brooklynification, is sharper than some of the others. It’s an understated satire on gentrification, in which multiracial affluence doesn’t provide immunity from the ancient clashes of urban life.” COURTESY OF BRIC TV

ENGAGING TIMELY CONVERSATIONS

BRIC OPEN Festival The inaugural BRIC OPEN Festival highlighted the power of inclusive, participatory programming with four days of events and activities that aimed to shake up ideas about how we make and consume culture, whose voices and stories sit at the center of artistic creation, and what we imagine the future of our communities to be. The BRIC OPEN kicked off with a talk by musical genius David Byrne (of the band Talking Heads) on reasons to be cheerful, despite troubling times.
