Opr ah ain’t got nothing on me!

First Person Series presented by Brooklyn Free Speech

There are three words that come to mind when we here at Brooklyn Free Speech think about Serrina Goodman— talented, kind, and inspiring. The media powerhouse and 2015 B Free Awards winner will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of her show, The Serrina Goodman Show in 2016 and she’s not showing any signs of slowing down. A breast cancer survivor who caught it at stage 0, Serrina attributes her early diagnosis to regularly discussing issues related to women’s health on her show and advocating that her female viewers receive yearly mammograms. In the close to ten years that The Serrina Goodman Show has aired on Brooklyn Free Speech, the show has tackled topics like fashion, relationships, prison reform, and she’s interviewed the renowned singer and actress, Melba Moore, and Pro Golfer and Founder/CEO of The Darby Foundation, Chris Arceneaux. In this edition of the First Person Series presented by Brooklyn Free Speech, Serrina Goodman talks about why Public Access television has been an integral part of her journey in media. Serrina had a dream and she made it happen by paving her own way right here at Brooklyn Free Speech. I sat down with Serrina for an interview and here she is in her own words. Ready. Set. Get inspired!

T

It’s things like that. It’s the important things that make it just wonderful that you can put people on a platform and they can just talk about it. And then other people are like, “Oh, well you know what— me too!” Maybe they’re going through something that’s very similar. But, if you don’t have things like this. If you don’t have Public Access television where people can speak their mind, you’re not knowing what other people are thinking and you think you’re alone. And you’re really not, but people will think they’re alone. That’s why I love it here because where else can I do the things that I’ve done— shoot a pilot, pitch my show to a major network, win the B Free Award in the WOW! Factor category (best on-air personality), and to think it’s all because of the skills I learned at BRIC. And where would I get equipment like that? Thousands of dollars of equipment and all I have to do is sign on the dotted line…really!”

hat’s what this is all about…it’s not about me. You know, people might think that some producers here just want to be in the spotlight. “So I say, Oprah ain’t got nothing on me It’s not about that for me. That’s going to come. because Oprah, Tyler Perry, Nobody is going to take away my light. No one or none of them have the inside scoop is going to take away my shine. But that can’t be on blessings—we all have blessings— what it’s all about. If it’s all about that then you and I am one of the wealthiest miss the real purpose of it. This is all about free speech. It’s about educating people and getting women I know. I’m happy.” people to think about stuff. [Getting someone to say] I never thought about that. Is that really happening out there, Serrina? Yeah, it’s really By: Alease Annan happening! PHOTO: ALEASE ANNAN 22

For Janelle Nicol Galvez a.k.a Chef Jin, food means more than just nourishment or comfort— it’s a source of income, education, and personal completion. Every first Monday of the month, her show, Cooking with Jin, showcases her distinctive recipes that are not only sweet and succulent, but also help promote a healthy lifestyle. She also operates her own business, Jin’s Journey, Inc., as a “personal chef, urban farmer, and certified health coach.” Jin first studied TV production as early as high school. In 2009, she came to BRIC to hone those skills. “I found out about [BRIC] through friends who told me to go stop over there to see what it was about. That’s how it got started,” Jin recalled. Cooking with Jin was an ambitious production from the beginning. “It started out with a crew of 10 – which it still is today – and I found a neighborhood that would let me use their commercial kitchen.” These days, Jin shoots the program at her own kitchen over an eight week period. Although she’s usually the only face we see, Jin often invites other chefs to display a variety of dishes. “I think it’s important to try to get different cultures on the show and share what people are doing and showing them easy ways.”

“I think it’s important to try to get different cultures on the show and share what people are doing and showing them easy ways.”

with Jin” ( continued on pg 24 /25 )

A cornerstone for Cooking with Jin is debunking the myth “that eating healthy is expensive.” She encourages viewers to take advantage of urban farming and do proper research when purchasing healthy food and ingredients. “I grew up in Crown Heights, live in East New York, my kitchen is in Bed-Stuy. In those three communities, some people are on food stamps, living with assisted living. So, I wanted to let them know how to use those food stamps, those W.I.C. checks, they don’t have to use it on garbage.” Before Janelle became Chef Jin, she worked in sales and business production,

selling editing stations to networks like NBC. Although lucrative, Jin was “struggling to get out of bed” due to feeling unfulfilled. So, she made a fateful choice. “One morning I decided that I was going to give myself a oneyear notice to leave my job to transition into the food business.” Within that year, Jin was recruited to draft a culinary curriculum for a youth program in East New York and never looked back. Jin founded her company in 2013 and this past March, Cooking with Jin was nominated for a Brooklyn Free Speech B Free Award. By: Matthew Allen PHOTO: COURTESY OF JIN’S JOURNEY, INC.

Goat Cheese Cheesecake with Jin’s Blackberry Tarragon Glaze

24

Goat Cheese Cheesecake with Jin’s Blackberry Tarragon Glaze

Graham cracker crust

·32 honey graham sticks ·2 tablespoons sugar ·4 tablespoons unsalted butter, (melted)

CHEESECAKE FILLING

·2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, (cut into pieces) ·3 (4-ounce) packages fresh goat cheese, (crumbled) ·2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest ·2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ·1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract ·11/4 cup sugar ·4 eggs

For the crust, preheat oven to 400°F. Process graham sticks in a food processor until almost ground to a powder. Add almonds and sugar and process until almonds are chopped finely. Transfer crumb mixture to a medium-sized mixing bowl and pour in butter. Stir until crumbs are thoroughly moistened. Press crumb mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch spring form pan. Place pan on a baking sheet and bake until crust is golden brown and firm, about 10 minutes. For the cheesecake, reduce oven heat to 325°F. Place cream cheese, goat cheese, lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. With an electric hand mixer, beat until just smooth, scraping down sides of the bowl as needed. In two or three additions, beat in sugar until mixture is creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating and scraping down sides of the bowl after each addition. Continue to beat until mixture is very smooth. Pour batter into prepared crust. Bake until edges of cheesecake look set and the center is still soft and slightly jiggly, 50 to 60 minutes. Place pan on a rack to cool completely in the pan. Then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight. 25
