BRIC Spring 2015

Page 1

WELCOME TO BRIC! For 37 years, BRIC has presented unparalleled programming in contemporary art, performing arts, and community media to reflect and inspire Brooklyn’s diverse community. We opened BRIC Arts | Media House in October 2013 to serve as the cultural home of artists, media makers, and our beloved Brooklyn community. This spring at BRIC House, we continue to amplify Brooklyn through must-see art exhibitions, live performances, community events, public access television programs, media classes, and more. We are proud that all of these programs are free or low cost. We invite you to pop in and stay a while.

MPORARY

MAPPING BROOKLYN AN EXHIBITION TO BE COLLABORATIVELY PRESENTED AT BRIC HOUSE FEBRUARY 26 – MAY 3, 2015 FREE ADMISSION BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY FEBRUARY 26 – SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 Curated by Elizabeth Ferrer, Vice President, Contemporary Art at BRIC

JENNIFER MARAVILLAS, 71 SQUARE MILE, 2012 – 15 6

The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists inspired by maps and cartography with historical maps, suggesting the myriad ways that map-based work can explore physical space as well as the terrain of the metaphorical, psychological, and personal. In the galleries at both venues, historic maps and contemporary works will be in dialogue and highlight the innovative ways that contemporary artists use mapping, cartography, and exploration to reveal data, ideas, and emotions. A key element of Mapping Brooklyn is its local focus. Brooklyn is not only an international center of the contemporary art world, but the most populous of New York’s boroughs. It is a

place of astounding diversity and change —  neighborhoods and demographics are in constant flux, as are the built environment and use of land. With this exhibition, we aim to introduce visitors to the remarkable range of historic maps that have sought to study and document facets of the borough as well as contemporary art works that reveal mapping as a powerful means of representation. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection which boasts one of the richest collections of maps of Brooklyn in the world. Artists in Mapping Brooklyn include: Aaron Beebe; Daniel Bejar; Francisca Benitez; Gail Biederman; Justin Blinder; Christine Gedeon; Katarina Jerinic; Joyce Kozloff; Laura Kurgan, Peter Lapsley; Jennifer Maravillas; Simonetta Moro; Bundith Phunsombartlet; Jan Rothuizen; Patricia Smith; Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin; and Sarah Williams. The exhibition will be accompanied by public programs and a brochure with essays by Elizabeth Ferrer, BRIC; and Deborah Schwartz, President, Brooklyn Historical Society. This exhibition is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.

CLASSROOM AS STUDIO

THE 27TH ANNUAL CONTEMPORARY ART AND MEDIA EDUCATION STUDENT EXHIBITION MAY 20 – JUNE 21, 2015 FREE ADMISSION Curated by BRIC’s Education Department and Jenny Gerow, Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art

ABIGAIL B. CLARK

This annual exhibition is a culmination of work from student and teaching artists —all professional visual artists whose own work informs the classroom experience—from the academic year. It showcases work in a wide range of artistic mediums, created by students taking part in BRIC’s public school-based residencies and after-school programs which bring professional artists, and their studio practices into the classroom. This spring, the show will demonstrate the exchange that occurs between teaching artists, students, and the creative process. Student work will be juxtaposed with that of their teaching artist .

CONTEMPORARY ART

PERFORM ARTS Performing Arts programming at BRIC includes a wide array of music, dance, theater, and multidisciplinary residencies and performances. Artists are given time to incubate projects, gain feedback from work-in-progress showings, and present full performances. This spring, we have exclusive concerts including a world premiere and must-see musical forces by way of Mali, Zimbabwe, and Cuba.

BRICLAB RESIDENCIES

DREW GRAY WILSON

AMY EVANS The Champion (work-in-progress) RESIDENCY: FEBRUARY 24–MARCH 7, 2015 SHOWINGS: FRIDAY & SATURDAY, MARCH 6 & 7, 7:30pm BRIC HOUSE ARTIST STUDIO $10 ADV | $14 DOOR, General Admission A new play by Brooklyn playwright Amy Evans, created with UK-based director Mark Rosenblatt and actor Noma Dumezweni, The Champion is inspired by the life of Nina Simone, and offers a rare look into the heart and mind of an artist known as much for her indictment of American racism as her artistic brilliance. The Champion is an intimate portrayal of this cultural icon, the outstanding musicians who worked with her, and the turbulent era during which they rose to fame.

18

ANDREW JORDAN

CORI OLINGHOUSE Cartoon Kitchen (work-in-progress) RESIDENCY: MARCH 10–21, 2015 SHOWINGS: FRIDAY & SATURDAY, MARCH 20 & 21, 7:30pm BRIC HOUSE ARTIST STUDIO $10 ADV | $14 DOOR, General Admission Cori Olinghouse is a Brooklyn-based choreographer whose work explores the shapeshifting capacities of the body, space, and time. In Cartoon Kitchen, she experiments with the visual techniques used in animation, always looking for absurd, unusual ways of translating these principles into a choreographic lens for a live audience. Olinghouse invites long-time collaborators Neal Beasley and Eva Schmidt to join her in inventing an assemblage of hybrid, ambiguous characters.

IZZY ZIMMERMAN

OKWUI OKPOKWASILI Poor People’s TV Room (work-in-progress) RESIDENCY: MARCH 24 – APRIL 4, 2015 SHOWINGS: FRIDAY & SATURDAY, APRIL 3 & 4, 7:30pm BRIC HOUSE ARTIST STUDIO $10 ADV | $14 DOOR, General Admission Brooklyn-based choreographer, dancer, and actress Okwui Okpokwasili’s multidisciplinary performance piece Poor People’s TV Room considers the collective amnesia around women’s resistance movements in Nigeria, from the Igbo Women’s War of 1929 to the recent Boko Haram kidnappings and the “Save Our Girls” campaign. With collaborator Peter Born, she creates a dystopian narrative where characters slip through the fissures of time, wandering in a bush of ghosts.

CARRIE MAE WEEMS

CARL HANCOCK RUX & TOSHI REAGON Kingmaker (work-in-progress) RESIDENCY: APRIL 7–18, 2015 SHOWINGS: FRIDAY & SATURDAY, APRIL 17 & 18, 7:30pm BRIC HOUSE ARTIST STUDIO $10 ADV | $14 DOOR, General Admission Kingmaker is a new folk opera conceived by Carl Hancock Rux (book and lyrics) and Toshi Reagon (original music & lyrics). Based on the true story of an African-American (female to male) transgendered gospel quartet singer, and drawing upon the traditions of African-American roots music, the work is an exploration of the spiritual journey of gender, faith, and the seldom told history of the Great Migration.
