Upon successful completion of our courses you will become a Certified Community Producer, allowing you to use our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, as well as broadcast time on Brooklyn Free Speech, all free of charge.

You will learn best practices for capturing clean audio in the field. We will cover the various types of equipment such as microphones (lavalier, hand held, shotgun), field mixers, and digital audio recorders. We will also discuss tips to recognize and minimize distracting background noise, as well as making an “audio checklist” to ensure the best audio quality possible.

Effective interviewing takes practice, research, and the ability to engage with your subject. This class will cover the basics such as preparing for an interview, researching your subject, choosing engaging interview questions, avoiding common pitfalls in interviewing, and the art of using guiding questions to get the best answers during your interview. We will also cover which microphones are appropriate for various settings, location scouting, and one/two-camera interviewing techniques.

This course will guide you through the creative process of brainstorming, writing, and publishing your next exciting screenplay. We will cover writing topics such as the three-act story structure, character development, and building tension in your story. Also included are common formatting techniques and writing your screenplay in Celtx, a free scriptwriting and storyboarding program.

21st Century Storytelling (Intro) is designed to introduce professional artists and media makers working in live performance to theories and tools for integrating hybrid media elements into theatrical productions. This 1 1/2 day interactive session begins with a brief history of OBIE-award winning performance and media company The Builders Association, and introduces students to the company’s collaborative real-time multimedia devising process. Small groups then go through a series of exercises using media and collaborating on sketches which are used as a springboard for group exploration and discussion. Facilitated by members of The Builders Association including director Marianne Weems, writer and performer Moe Angelos, and video and interactive media designer Jesse Garrison.

BRIC presents contemporary art, performing arts, and community media programs that reflect Brooklyn’s creativity and diversity. BRIC also provides resources to launch, nurture, and showcase artists and media makers. We advance access to and understanding of arts and media by presenting free and low-cost programming, and by offering education and other public programs to people of all ages.

BRIC is the public access media organization for Brooklyn. Its community media programs offer residents free access to media production facilities and equipment, and low-cost media education. BRIC’s community media programming also includes three programming initiatives aired on the five-channel Brooklyn Public Network: community-produced Brooklyn Free Speech; BRIC-produced, Brooklyn-focused Brooklyn Independent Media; and Brooklyn Bulletin Board, a 24/7 looping announcement service used by Brooklyn nonprofits.
