This has then been printed fairly large pale cerise pink pattern. Some of the flowers are solid some are outline. Width 59”/150cm For those of us who can remember the era, from which that song came, you may have had a garment made out of this rather fabulous black polyester dress fabric. It is somewhat shiny and definitely made for the posh side of things. A rather beautiful cloth. On the label it says 'Canadian peach skin' - it is not a peach skin in my mind but it is nice and soft. Second Lieutenant’s Ball Now I know there’s no such thing as a second lieutenants ball. But perhaps if there was it might be a little more light-hearted, perhaps even a tad naughty. Yorkshire Tweed To be absolutely honest I’m not so sure you would make a suit out of it, but if it was for a lady it would be a skirt or a jacket. And if a man, just a jacket; I don’t think you would make the… but who knows? It’s made up of dark brown, blue, black, pale blue and various shades of brown yarns in quite a large, window pane check. Typical of the sort of thing you make hunting stuff out of. It doesn’t come a lot better than this.

C ✿✿CAUGHT IN THE STORM Now this is a cloth you don’t see the likes of too often. It is a cotton crepe de chine, printed in another ‘stormy’ abstract design in cream, brown, beige, black and grey. Quite striking without hitting you in the face and in order to get this amount of ink, onto this fine a cloth; I think they’ve had to put a bit of finish on it. So it has a little bit of a body that wouldn’t be there if it was a polyester cloth. None the less, very special.

✿✿COCKADOODLE DO I’m not so sure what this cloth reminded me of to give it that title, but perhaps it has something to do with the swirling featherlike pattern in white on a black.The fabric has been dyed and the pattern has been printed using a pattern called discharge printing; which means that the black gets bleached out to create the white. Which, to be fair is actually slightly off white. The black will not run at 40 degrees. It is a very drapey, knitted viscose cloth. Not exactly for the faint-hearted but it is rather delicious. 60” wide at least. So you get a lot of feathers for your money, and it is a fairly substantial cloth to boot. It is John Kaldor fabric.

✿✿CHEKOV I didn’t know really where to start with this but start with the width, it’s a 135cm. it’s made of 53% cotton 38% wool and 9% nylon. What will it make… not a suit because the pattern isn’t suitable for that but a jacket certainly. It’s in dark grey with an irregular and I do mean irregular check in black very pale grey and pink. The checks are not joined up. Some are large and some are much smaller and so therefore its abstract and will

d) To Have and To Hold Made from two fold, 180’s supremely fine long staple cotton. This shirting in a very tiny window pane check, has very much the hand of silk, as it might being as fine as it is and is made up of navy blue, white and red yarns. This cloth is Italian but there were cloths in the good old days, fabrics as fine as this were woven on Lancashire looms, but there was probably one weaver to two or three looms. Width: 58"/148cm f) Super 180s - Silver 60 ins wide cotton shirting of the finest possible variety in a marled grey.

✿✿GIVE ME STRENGTH 150cm wide heavy cotton cloth with a ribbed, rope-like stripe at quarter inch intervals all down the cloth. It has been softened by a very light sanding; and so it is soft and it’s strong. I have a feeling that this could have been used as a lightweight furnishing, however you would never have had to sit on it. And certainly not in your overalls. But for a very outstanding summer jacket, this could be the one.

✿✿HAMMERLE There are those amongst you that may remember, when we used to be able get hold of Hammerle fabrics. Hammerle are very famous, and rightly so, shirting manufacturer in Austria. They produced wondrous shirting fabrics.

The likes of which sadly our manufacturers were never able to. This 52” wide, cotton lycra shirting fabric could well be theirs, but there were also other Austrian manufacturers of who were equally as good. The cloth is from Austria and it’s very different. So I will gather myself and tell you about it. The reason it is the width it is, is because of the Lycra which draws the cloth, in so it probably started off as a 60” cloth. It’s a multi-faceted stripe and from the left hand edge I will describe it to you.

The first stripe is very much like a lightweight denim, but in grey. The next band of stripes are a very pale lime green, orange and blue on a white background and this is about an inch wide. ✿✿MOMMA SAID Momma said, was about to say I’d reached an awkward age. But I must have said that many times before, because I have had many awkward ages to go through. And I am certainly not at an age to be able to wear this cloth, or maybe the colour. It’s is 132cm, which is fairly narrow in modern fabric terms. Rather heavy, viscose, wool and lycra crepe suiting in a rather vivid cerise. I have every reason to believe there won’t be a lot of this about anywhere, for the reason of the composition and indeed the colour. If you fancy a vivid, cerise suiting, made in 73% viscose, 24% wool, 3% lycra there isn’t a better one than this. Very crease resistant, very soft. So it is a very tiny, tiny pleat; which easily flattens out if you pull it but nevertheless it gathers, is the purpose I am trying to allude to. And it is certainly the sort of cloth that would look well in a loose fitting top, with a waist gathered and tied. The design is a floral one in pink and cream and pale beige on a darker beige back cloth. A very soft and gentle design.

The swirls vary in size, and the overall effect is very pretty and quite stunning, and not easy to do either.

T ✿✿TARTANS These fabrics are made to imitate a fine wool, I must emphasise that it is not but it is doing an OK job at trying to fool you, not that many of you would be fooled but I hope you know what I am getting at. The tartan fabrics has a nice hand and a good drape. It is made out of 65% polyester and 35% cotton so it is washable at 40 degrees and the polyester element helps it keep it from creasing when wearing and making it easier to iron, it still does crease but not much. Good quality fabrics. a) Alexander - Woven grey Thompson Check Fabric. Lightweight fabric at about 200gsm. b) Vivienne - woven Royal Stuart fabric in Red. Lightweight at about 235gsm.

✿✿THE GYPSY 145cm wide very lightly crinkled polyester crepe de chine in black with an all over quite small floral print in pink in fact shades of pink and shades of green a variation of a very old and ongoing pattern. lovely cloth REF: CM1143 WIDTH: 57”/145cm

✿✿THE PRICE OF TRIPE I haven’t seen anything quite as brave as this for quite some time. 150cm fine cotton dress fabric which is made up different sized patches. It must be machine sewn but it does look in many respects as though it has been hand sewn. There are lots of different patterns and colours and as far as I can make out it is a random pattern there are odd lurex stripes in some of the patterns but the overall effect is of lightness and it is certainly different and quite beautiful. I don’t think you will want more than a skirt out of it and it will swirl rather well.

✿✿THE ROAD TO MANDALAY 140cm wide fine cotton almost lawn with a swirly ribbon pattern embroidered on to it in the same colour. Another Summer is coming fabric.

✿✿THINK OF A NUMBER 150cm wide absolutely glorious fine cotton poplin, which has then been printed according to who thought what first. The background is white.

The main gist of the colourway is red, on that white, and then we have some black, fairly organised splodge here and there. Into which, we then have some, sandy golden bulrushes. You understand my problem; it is much easier to take a picture and for you to make up your own mind what it is, I can’t give a better description than I already have done. There are times, when perhaps you feel you should give it all together. Beautiful cloth, very stunning design. How’s that?

✿✿TICKLES YOUR FANCY (picture on the back cover) 150cm wide soft polyester satin in a wonderful shade of dark purpley blue. This is a bit of an “I want to be alone cloth” in that it has a very sensual appearance and handle and might cause heart problems in some quarters. Not only is it a satin it has a very fine ribbed weave on the reverse. I think you could use this the other way round and have the rib outside and the satin next to you. Say no more.

✿✿TIMES GONE BY (picture on the back cover) Two 60 ins cotton voile checks from Austria where you have heard me wax lyrical many times before- particularly in the younger days of Croft Mill they never cease to amaze and surprise the sort of stuff they turn out. a) Blue - white and blue and a bit of yellow window pane check with millions of tiny slubs in contrasting but coordinating colours running across the cloth at 6 inch intervals which is part of the check. Its light its delicate it’s fabulous. b) Pink Peach - Made from the same yarns as number one in that there are millions of them exceptionally fine and this is another windowpane check in light orange, lemon pale turquoise and light cerise pink. The colours are all quite muted but still striking. Glorious.

Y ✿✿YEE HAR 150cm wide fauz suede in a light camel colour. Exceedingly soft and reminds me of a lady I saw line dancing in the wild horse saloon in Nashville. She had the boots the hat the gun belt (not the gun) the whole shebang- she looked absolutely fabulous - tassels on the waistcoat. Her skirt might have been the finest of leathers but it didn’t look like that to me.
