Crack Repair
Crack repair products strengthen cracked walls by enhancing the tensile, flexural and shear strength of masonry using various brick reinforcement techniques. Cracks in walls are usually caused by structural movement attributable to temperature variations, chemical reactions, age deterioration or changes in the moisture content of brickwork, or in the ground that supports it. Typical defects that may trigger cracks in walls include any one or a combination of: • Ground movement – Subsidence, land slip or heave • Inadequate support – Lintel failure, arch failure • Insufficient restraint – Lack of wall ties, restraint straps, poor bonding • Resizing – Expansion or shrinkage due to thermal or moisture variations • Rusting metals – Wall tie corrosion, expansion of hoop irons or fixings Once a wall has fractured it is no longer a composite structural unit. In order to affect a reliable crack repair the cause of movement must be eliminated and the structure appropriately reinforced.

Condesation
Condensation is the most common cause of unwanted dampness in UK homes. Without having adequate anticondensation measures in place then humidity control problems can occur. Homes with inadequate heating, insulation and ventilation are most likely to be affected by the consequences of condensing water vapour. What causes condensation? The amount of water vapour that can be held by air is directly related to its temperature. Warm air has the capacity to hold more moisture than cold air. It therefore follows that when warm, moist air cools to a level below its moisture holding capacity then the excess water vapour is released onto cold surfaces as it condensates from a gas into liquid form. Why has condensation and mould become such a problem over recent years? In an effort to increase energy efficiency in homes, modern housing and refurbished buildings have effectively become sealed boxes, providing ideal conditions for condensation to occur. Double glazing and central heating have taken the place of draughty windows and open fireplaces with the result that natural ventilation has been greatly reduced. What can I do to reduce condensation in my home? Water vapour condensate can be avoided by correcting the balance between moisture generation, air temperature and surface temperatures. Paraffin and bottled gas heaters should be avoided and tumble driers should be vented to the outside to reduce the excess generation of water vapour.

Specialist Paints
Twistfix supply an array of specialised paints for the protection of buildings from water penetration, mould growth, wood rot and propagation of fire. Intumescent paints and varnished protect timber , structural steel, and previously painted walls and ceilings by forming a fire resistant carbon char that insulates the wood from heat and flames to delay and reduce ignitability. Smoke and flame retardant top coats release a flame extinguishing gas upon contact with a fire. Chalky anti-condensation paint is formulated with a porous structure to absorb condensation, whilst fungicidal paint additives protect surfaces against the growth of moulds. Paint on timber preservatives protect wood from dry rot and wet rots. A variety of acrylic paints, epoxy resin coatings and water repellent treatments are available to keep unwanted moisture out of buildings, protecting both the materials of the building and the occupiers health.
Paint on waterproofing layers work in one of two ways. Damp proofing paints in the form of liquid membranes cure to block the passage of water and air to keep moisture out. Breathable water repellent coatings line the capillary pores in masonry with a silicone layer to prevent moisture absorption but to advantageously allow the passage of vapour.

Waterproofing
Basement waterproofing is an important aspect in the construction of basement living accommodation. Cellars are at risk of damp and flood problems unless an effective waterproofing system is designed and implemented. Type A systems usually comprise waterproofing using cement based tanking renders, bituminous paints or epoxy coatings applied either internally or externally to keep water at bay. Type B systems are built using dense concrete that is integrally waterproof in its own right. Type C systems manage the ingress of water, allowing it drain behind profiled waterproof membranes, and the exit of water, via drainage channels, sump chambers and pumps. When installing twistfix Cavity Drainage membranes careful attention must be given to provide a suitable drainage solution. Natural drainage is not normally possible or convenient in below ground situations, so mechanical drainage must be used. Twistfix offer a large range of pumps for the control of water movement and can supply everything the contractor needs for flooded basements. In certain instances a more powerful pump maybe required (greater height pumping capability) or a 2nd pump is required as a backup in case the first one fails. Twistfix can advise the contractor in this instance what the correct pump would be for these situations.
