advice

You're engaged! Things to Do as Soon as You Get Engaged

This is the moment you've been waiting for. Holy moley, you have an engagement ring and you're getting married! It's so surreal, yet definitely happening, and like it or not, the hours, days, and weeks following that proposal are guaranteed to be a whirlwind. There are so many things to think about, so many people to contact and so much to get done. Don't be overwhelmed. You have plenty of time to plan the rest of your lives but if you're like most newly engaged people, you'll be itching to share the news with all your friends and dive into the actual wedding planning part headfirst.

GET A MANICURE Your hands will be in the spotlight for the next couple of weeks, which means your manicure best be on fleek. Or, if you're going for the natural look, make sure your nails are clean and shaped. Otherwise, friends will be focusing more on your chipped nail polish than your gorgeous engagement ring. Not cool. POST A RING SELFIE A picture is worth a thousand words, right? If you're ready to share with the world that you're engaged, open up that Instagram! Take a ring selfie or a sweet pic of you and your fiancé to share the love. Even better—if the actual proposal was caught on film, nothing is better than that look of surprise. And don't forget to make it Facebook official!

Pinterest boards, bridal magazines, blogs, dress shopping, venue hunting...the list goes on and on. Years of watching wedding movies couldn't have prepared you for what's to come (trust us, it's totally different). While the average engagement lasts a year to a year-and-a-half, there are certain things you'll want to get done stat — no matter how long you plan on being a fiancé. So where do you get started? There's no strict order to follow as long as you tackle the immediate to-dos. Committing the rest of your life to the love of your life is scary and amazing and the best kind of stress, however, it's a major, major milestone, and planning a wedding together is the icing on the cake — we promise! CALL YOUR PARENTS And your siblings and BFFs too (unless you are keeping your engagement under wraps for a while). The last place they should have to hear about your new status is on social media, so give them a ring personally and tell them the happy news. Chances are, mom and dad already know what's up and have been waiting by the phone patiently for your call.

10 M

CHERRS! Round up some of your best friends and family and go out for a celebratory drink, or have a special date night solo if that's more your style. You're engaged, and that's totally worth toasting.

10 TIPS TO KEEP SKIN SOFT AND GLOWING THIS WINTER

inter brides might not have to worry about frizzy hair and melting makeup, but those getting married in cold climates have their own beauty emergencies to conquer — like skin flaking and makeup caking.

Use Sunscreen

You winterize your home, your car and even your wardrobe. But what about your skin? Protecting your skin from the harshness of the cold weather is vital and easier than you think. Cold weather and low humidity levels result in dry air, which steal moisture away from the skin. Without immediate care, dry skin can lead to cracking and irritation and increase painful skin conditions. “As the weather gets colder, we start a fire, turn up the heater and snuggle up to our soon-to-be,” explains Tenille, owner and Esthetician of Nirvana Skin Care. “This can have some major perks, but not with your skin.” To make sure your skin doesn't dry out from the cold, add moisturizing oils to your bath; use a petroleum jelly product on your nails, heels, and elbows; and drinking lots of water are just a few tips. Tenille has provided us with her top 10 tips for maintaining your bridal beauty during the winter.

Stay Hydrated

Yes, we still need water! We tend to drink less water in the winter because we turn to hot drinks like cocoa and tea, but don’t forget that your skin needs hydration from the inside, out. A little warm water with lemon can be very refreshing and hydrating at the same time.

Yes, we still need water! We tend to drink less water in the Even though you don’t see the sun, ultraviolet rays are still present when you go outside, even when it’s cold, gray, and overcast. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will form a protective barrier from those damaging rays. Remember the reflection off the snow’s surface can be just as damaging to skin as standing in full sun. Wearing sunscreen will help prevent fine lines, crow’s feet, smile lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

Use More Moisturizer

You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so should your skin care routine. Summertime often calls for a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer to prevent oily skin and blackheads. Pamper your winter skin with a moisturizer that is thick and rich in texture. Look for heavier moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid to help lock in or replace lost moisture.

Refrain from Steamy Showers or Hot Baths

After a long day of wedding planning in the chilly weather, we want nothing more than to crawl into a hot bath. However, extra hot baths and steamy showers will leave your skin stripped of moisture. “Consider a lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda,” explains Tenille. “This can help relieve skin that is so dry and itchy. Don’t forget to apply a moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out of the shower to lock in moisture.”

Shed the Harsh, Alcohol-Based Products

Acne-preventing face wash and toners for oil-prone skin may have their place in your summer routine. However, during colder months, these products contain coarse ingredients that will dehydrate skin.

Gently Exfoliate

We often forget to help the skin slough off dead cells in the winter, particularly on our face and hands. Yet moisture can’t get in if the dead cells are too plentiful. Find a gentle exfoliating enzyme and use it on your face and your hands. Then follow immediately with moisture to truly see a smoother difference. Exfoliating body washes or scrubs (sugar is the best) are also helpful in the winter months to get rid of debris and dead skin on the larger area of our body too.

Use a Humidifier

Humidifiers moisturize the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out. Take it a step further and place several small humidifiers throughout your home so they help disperse the moisture more evenly. Skin is our largest organ and very reactive to our environment. Adding 5% more humidity to your home can make a big difference before your big day.

Avoid Toxins & Abrasive Fabrics

Particularly if you have eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis, you have to avoid allergens and irritants that may trigger a flare up. Your skin is fragile in the winter, avoiding irritating fabrics (like wool) and chemical-laden detergents. Use mild cleansers and moisturizers designed for sensitive skin.

Eat Well

The holidays can be a bust for eating healthy. Exercise and outdoor activities often lower in frequency or even diminish. So our eating can really play a part in feeling healthy and it will show in our skin. Try eating foods high in water content like cantaloupe, apples, oranges, and watery veggies like celery, cucumbers, zucchini, and carrots. These can help hydrate your skin from the inside, out. Don’t forget your vitamin C and zinc to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin.

Seek a Professional

With all of the wedding errands, fittings, and vendor meetings, it’s a good idea to have a skin care specialist on your side. Your Esthetician can help trouble shoot any skin care concerns, edit your skin care regimen and perform treatments to help keep your skin glowing, and have your skin ravishing as you prepare to walk down the aisle.

Molly & Blaine Cox Married June 23, 2017

Blaine and Molly met while she

attended Central Catholic High School, and Blain was in his first year at Modesto Junior College. Despite mutual friends introducing the pair, the sparks didn't fly until two years later when they moved away for college. Blain attending University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and Molly at George Washington University in Washington D.C. After spending most of their first semester on the phone with each other, the pair decided to try and date long distance. Once the couple finished school they moved to the Bay Area where Blain could continue school at Santa Clara University School of Law.

A few years later, Molly and Blaine moved back to Modesto to be closer to friends and family. Selecting the locations for their ceremony and reception was simple. “I went to St. Stanislaus Elementary School and Central Catholic High School,” explains Molly. “Having the ceremony at St. Stanislaus Church was an easy choice.” Her parent's home is located in the middle of a vineyard outside Modesto, and she knew a reception at her childhood home would be meaningful. With the locations set, Molly and her mother could start creating the details. “I found a gorgeous lace Atelier

Pronovias dress that had a vintage look to it, but also some really pretty details like the illusion neckline and low back that made it unique,” she says. “I loved that it had the same feel as the dresses my Grandmother's wore for their weddings, but still had some details that made it more modern.” Molly’s older sister, Jenavieve was married in Modesto at her parent's home a few years before and had several vendors they were thrilled to work with again, including Copper Spur and Sounds in Motion DJ. The only major concern the couple had was the construction going on at her parents home.

Molly's favorite color is yellow, so this became the primary color for the wedding. A soft buttery hue in chiffon was selected for the bridesmaids. Shades of pinks, peach, and mint created the palette for the rest of the wedding dĂŠcor.

“All the way up until the last few days before the wedding, the backyard looked like a construction site,” explains Molly. “My parents were in the middle of building a pool house in their backyard, so ensuring it was completed before the wedding day was a process.” By June 23, 2017, the outside was completed. The inside not entirely complete, but it turned out to be a perfect location for Molly and her bridesmaids to get ready in.

“Our wedding week was hit by a heat wave that brought some of the hottest temperatures with a few days reaching 109 degrees” explains Molly. “To ensure our guests would be comfortable, we ordered a few hundred battery powered mister fans that were handed out at the reception and large fans that we placed around the property. By the time guests were arriving for the reception, the sun was setting and the weather had cooled off making for a perfect sunset celebration.”

One of the Molly’s favorite details of the day was a crest designed by Holly Anna Calligraphy with the couple's initials. They had it designed into the programs, menus, and on their seating chart. Paired with gold beaded charges, gold flatware, and centerpieces to compliment the dÊcor.

Kristen & Tyler Bettencourt Married August 26, 2017

Kristen and Tyler dated throughout their senior year of high school, but as the school year neared its end reality set in as the school year neared the end that Kristen would be moving to San Francisco for college. Tyler had plans to play baseball for Fresno State. Even though their short-term plans had them living miles apart, they never doubted the strength of their relationship and knew that their future was together.

and reverence, which are traits we want to carry with us into our marriage,” says Kristen. "The most important aspect of our wedding was promising our lives to each other in front of all our loved ones, but most importantly in front of God. When I learned green symbolizes renewal and promise of new life the vision for our wedding florals came easily. It had to be all white florals with overflowing romantic greenery.”

“The summer before starting college Tyler mentioned over ice cream, 'We should get married after college.' I think I laughed, kissed him, and kept eating my ice cream-cone,” explains Kristen. “Tyler has always been a man of his word, and I don’t know why I didn’t think twice about that comment. The rocky road must have been distracting me. Only two months after his college graduation he popped the question. The 26th of August 2017 our vows and some lip-locking was exchanged and we officially became Mr. and Mrs. Bettencourt!”

Old world elegance with a modern twist seemed fitting for the couple. “Tyler and I are pretty traditional, “yet we’re 25 and youthful.” Kristen selected stylish floor length bridesmaid's dresses in black by Calvin Klein for her fun-loving bridesmaids. Tyler, alongside his eight groomsmen, stuck to time-honored elegance with black Vera Wang tuxedos. The wedding party’s style coupled with soft gold details throughout The Century would embrace a balance of the vintage architecture and furniture the pair selected.

Kristen, in marketing as a Social Media Influencer, Tyler, now a Personal Trainer and Physical Therapy Aid, chose to keep their ceremony and reception close to home. Their source of inspiration came from their hometown church in Patterson, CA. “The color white is a symbol of purity, as well as respect

“Tyler and I really wanted to add fun personal details sprinkled throughout our wedding and bring forward our culture and youthful side,” explains Kristen. ‘We figured everyone loves social media and will be sharing the wonderful moments throughout the night, so we had an illustration made of us as bride and

Making a sparkling exit, the couple kissed under the glimmer. Kristen expressed, “it was the perfect kiss goodnight to our wedding day!”

“We wanted our favors to truly express Tyler and me. Tyler’s culture is Portuguese, mine is Mexican,” explains Kristen. “We wanted everyone to have a taste of our culture by trying our favorite signature cookies in custom favor boxes, paired with our favorite coffee beans from our bay area coffee house, Philz.”

Desiree& Jonathan Bryant Married July 2, 2017

BRIDALCOUTUREMAG.COM

M47

MOMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Moments before Desiree's father walked her down the aisle, he and Desiree's mother wrapped her bridal bouquet with "something borrowed". It was a gold letter “D” which belonged to Desiree's brother Daniel, who passed away when she was a little girl.

I LOVE YOU, I KNOW "Our first date was on May 4th and we both have a love for Star Wars, Desiree explains. "I tease Jonathan and tell him he purposely took me out on "May the 4th be with you". Every serious Star Wars fan knows the story: When Princess Leia finally professes her love for Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back, his scripted reply was “I love you, too.” Instead, Harrison Ford says, “I know.” It’s a beautiful moment, repeated by Desiree and Jonathan every day. The couple had the phrase engraved into their champagne glasses, and the ceremony even kicked off with Jonathan and their son, Hunter, walking down the aisle holding lightsabers and dueling in a Star Wars-style battle.

NOTEWORTHY DETAILS Music has always been a huge influence to the couple. Jonathan loves to sing and Desiree has a passion for dance. It only made sense that the couple decided the traditional guest book would not do. Instead, they brought one of their personal guitars and asked guests to sign it and they could hang it in their home.

NATURAL BEAUTY “Thomas and I agreed from the beginning that this was our day,” explains Jessica. “We didn't want high expectations to interrupt our joy and excitement surrounding our wedding.” Finding a venue to match their taste was quickly becoming a challenge for the couple. After several visits to various locations, Thomas mentioned to Jessica that a friend's ranch might be the perfect spot, and it was. “I could imme-

diately picture having all of our family and friends there and knew that it wouldn't take much to transform the place into our perfect reception venue.” A cathedral in the forest created by Redwoods, and a glowing canopy of strung lights, allowed the couple to create a romantic backdrop for their closest friends and family to celebrate. Farm tables blanketed with olive leaf garland, handmade by friends the morning of the wedding, paired with beguiling tin can floral arrangements reflected the couple's desire. “We received so many compliments on how we decorated and how perfect it reflected our style.”

Alexxis & Gabe Rudich Married October 7, 2017

lexxis never thought that saving a seat for Gabe in class A would lead her to a lesson of love.

She met Gabe in their science class during the last semester at Merced College. After many days of saved seats, Gabe asked Alexxis to lunch. The couple began dating even though they knew they were heading to different colleges in the Fall. Alexxis would be attending California State University, Stanislaus, and Gabe would be 90 miles south at California State University, Fresno. After a two–year, long-distance relationship, Gabe took Alexx-

is to the place they spent their six month anniversary. With their two dogs as witnesses, Gabe proposed to Alexxis at Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park. Planning began almost immediately. “Gabe and I did much of the planning together,” explains Alexxis. “He helped choose the venue, decide on the flowers and cake, and so much more.” Alexxis grew up marching in Portuguese Festa's with her sisters, she recalled one year when her mother was selecting flowers for the event and picked out colors of deep plum with sage green accents. Alexxis loved them so much, she knew that someday they would be the color choices for her wedding. Ivory, lavender, and plum floral arrangements were planted into white pumpkins as centerpieces, and mini-white pumpkins were offered as favor’s to their guests which represented Alexxis’s favorite season, Fall.

{Autumn Romance} Alexandra & Edgar Avila

Married October 7, 2017

Pageo Lavender Farm

Turlock, CA

W

hen Alexandra got up and went to work one morning, she never thought that it would be the day she met the love of her life. Edgar, a patient at the medical office Alexandra worked at, finally built the courage up to ask Alexandra out after seeing her through multiple office visits. A rendezvous over coffee and bowling led to their inseparable relationship. After their 2014 engagement, Alexandra and her mother worked closely together on all of the details. Incorporating color was important to Alexandra. Vibrant Mexican Maracas were selected as the wedding favors and Alexandra found the colors of them inspirational for the wedding dĂŠcor.

“Edgar and I really wanted my dad and brother's trade of welding to make a lasting impression on our special day,” says Alexandra. “We asked them to build a large metal ring that we would have covered in flowers for the altar which we then had staged behind us for the reception.” On a Fall afternoon, under a sunlit sky, Edgar gazed with emotion as Alexandra walked down the aisle in a stunning Maggie Sottero strapless ballgown. They said their “I do’s” in front of their closest friends and family followed by celebrations on the grounds at Pageo Lavender Farm. “As we look back on that beautiful day, we also want to pay respects to my Grandma Francis Chapa who was not able to make it to our wedding, says Alexandra. She passed away a couple days later while we were Honeymooning in Maui. Edgar and I hope we may continue to love one another in marital bliss like my grandparents did for over 60 years.”

Charlotte & Darren Nunes Married September 30, 2017

BRIDALCOUTUREMAG.COM

{Crafted with Love}

Charlotte and Darren were thrilled to blend two heritages into one special event. Charlotte is English and Darren is Portuguese, and it was important to the couple that they incorporated traditions from both of their heritages into the wedding day. Darren, along with the father of the bride handmade everything including the guest book table, which they designed and stained with maps of the countries each was from and the location they met. A few pieces of jewelry that Charlotte wore were her mother's, worn on her wedding day, along with a sapphire broach worn by four generations of women in her family dating back to 1902. 150 guests watched as Charlotte, in her Maggie Sottero blush gown, and Darren said their vows along side their three children, the youngest being baby Grace, born five weeks before the wedding. The reception was held at a private residence where guests enjoyed dinner from El Maguey Mexican Restaurant and Portuguese desserts made by the groom’s mother and aunt. Decorations around the reception were hand-crafted by the mother of the bride and Charlottes two bridesmaids. “We turned a blank canvas of a back yard into a reception fit for a princess,” Charlotte says. The couple and their family reside in Oakdale, CA.

The sweetheart neckline framed her face perfectly and the layers of breathtaking lace complimented her style and her bridesmaids were elegantly dressed in Portobello lace and chiffon floor length gowns.

Lesley grew up attending St Mary’s Catholic Church and participating gin events at the F.E.S Hall in Oakdale, CA. Therefore, holding her ceremony and reception at these two locations there held great significance.

In Lieu of traditional favors, Lesley and Nicholas made a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the honor of each guest and in the memory of the father of the groom.
