Does it seem to you that this fall was busier than most? The charitable scene was on fire with gala after gala breaking records. This is such a testament to the type of giving Houstonians are famous for. Most notably, Houston Children’s Charity raised over six million dollars before topping the night off with a private concert by Chicago!

Co-chairs Jessica Rossman and Gordon Bethune along with HBRF Co-founders Donna and Daniel Chang and Host Committee Co-chairs Donae, Bella and Rob Chramosta sold out the first event for the Hope Biosciences Research Foundation with help from some of Houston’s most recognized supporters as they shared their personal journeys of hope and the profound impact HBRF’s research and trials have had on their health. The seamlessly executed program included several videos, all filmed and edited in-house by HBRF volunteer Taylor Smith, that demonstrated the science behind HBRF’s technology and research in layman’s terms as well as the background, results, and personal stories from participants. One of these stories, shared both via video and on stage was of the Vyas family that shared the staggering and encompassing impact on their quality of life for their family and 13-yearold son Neel. With stem cell therapy, his seizure periodicity dramatically decreased from as many as a dozen in a day, primarily Grand Mal, to now being more than 30 days seizure-free. HBRF surprised the Vyas family by announcing that FDA was reviewing another year of treatment for Neel.

Stories like these and so many more continue to inspire us to give generously to causes near and dear to our hearts.

Bridal Extravaganza welcomes the next billboard bride: Jennifer

PROPOSAL

After five years of dating, Jennifer found herself at a crossroads as her and Zèta’s lease was coming to an end. Deciding to take a leap of faith, she decided to move out and trust that God would bring them together if their relationship was meant to be. Shortly after, Zèta surprised her with a sweet proposal at The Post with a beautiful view of the Houston skyline, and precious words that had her saying “yes.”

Jennifer, thinking they were just going to have a nice dinner, followed Zèta upstairs to the garden confused as to why they were not going to the restaurant. As Zèta began his proposal, she had no idea what was happening until she spotted a videographer filming them and it registered that he was proposing. She turned around and he was on one knee, and she immediately said yes. Their wedding date is set for March 2025.

BRIDAL EXTRAVAGANZA EXPERIENCE

Not feeling up to doing anything, Jennifer almost didn’t attend the Bridal Extravaganza. Deciding that she had nothing better to do as her electricity was out after Hurricane Beryl’s sweep through Houston, she decided to attend and make the most out of the situation. After having a great time on Saturday creating content and socializing with fellow influencers, she decided to attend Sunday as well.

With no intentions of applying to be the next Billboard Bride, she learned about the program – just before the application deadline. As the weeks passed, she grew increasingly nervous, overthinking whether she was even qualified. However, she eventually received an email that she had made it to the next round, and ultimately, the final round.

Photography by Weddings Unlimited

In August, the finalists met at Ventura’s Bridal Fashions and it was there that Jennifer had a feeling that she was the next Billboard Bride. Sure enough, within a few days she received the call.

BILLBOARD BRIDE PHOTOSHOOT

On the 21st floor of the Intercontinental Houston, Jennifer got ready in the presidential suite for her big photoshoot. The room was buzzing with excitement as Heather from Hues by Heather created the perfect look. The creative team from Oowl Events was busy designing a table scape and floral décor fit for a princess. Despite being a social media influencer who is frequently in front of a camera, she felt nervous, but spoke passionately about her desire to be the next Billboard Bride. She wants to be an example for young girls by showing that you can achieve your dreams with the right mindset and embracing selfbelief and persevering through any circumstance. Reflecting on her past as a refugee from Africa, Jennifer serves as an example of how far you can go in life with determination.

10 Most Beautiful Couples

I have had the honor, and I must say the daunting task, of writing about beautiful Houstonians since I first approached Laurette Veres, editor of this magazine, 16 years ago when she was the owner/editor of H Texas magazine with the idea of spotlighting those in our city who do so very much to serve others. She loved the idea and 18 years later, I am still presenting this article with my third in her Inside Houston magazine. Believe me, it never gets easier. In our beloved city of 2.305 million, deemed close to the very top in philanthropic charitable giving, there are hundreds who give of their heart, time and treasure to make our city the very best that it can be. The word "daunting" surfaces again.

This is the first time I spotlight couples who find joy in working together as they serve the citizens of this great city.

I define beauty as the ability to spread joy, lift spirits, encourage and inspire, and we measure it by service to mankind. With that definition in mind, we present 10 Most Beautiful Couples who are not only physically captivating; they make our city more beautiful.

DEFINITIONS OF BEAUTY:

Margaret Wolfe Hungerford: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Benjamin Franklin: "Beauty, like supreme dominion, is but supported by opinion."

Shakespeare: "Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye."

John Keats: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Its loveliness increases. It will never pass into nothingness.

Khalil Gibran: "Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart!"

My Mother and Yours: "Beauty is as beauty does."

They also donated $3 million to the South Texas College of Law Houston in 2021 for the school's diversity center. The donation was one of the largest single gifts to any law school for this purpose, STCL Houston said at the time. Benny, who is the managing partner at the law firm, Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz and Stogner, says, "Change can begin in your own community, but when you reach out to other communities, you can change the world, one act of kindness at a time."

The Greatest Social Dilemma

Graffiti has always been one of the biggest talks of town or in any place since you see it everywhere you go, look, or in a hard-toreach place that makes you wonder how did they managed to do that?

It has also sparked a huge controversy if graffiti is deemed artistically correct or an act of crime/ vandalism and if people should even hold a high praise to the artform that is socially incorrect while others appreciate seeing graffiti for how artistic, rebellious, and expressive one can be with ideas and political beliefs. There are two different sides of this coin where if graffiti should be allowed to deface many buildings and public areas and be allowed to express such vulgar things, or if graffiti allows artists and other activist protesters to express themselves in a unique way that others would not even dare or say or state in this unique form of communication across many people in society?

VANDALISM OR ART?

The debate over whether graffiti still constitutes art or vandalism is incredibly complex due to the many

factors that constitute and differentiate how others see it. While there is no morally correct answer to this debate, there are still very understandable points of differentiation where one side may be seen as correct. Graffiti to some is a way for artists to be granted a new level of expressive freedom and a way to ensure that their work can be appreciated beyond the artistic elite. It also takes an incredible amount of skill and talent to be able to give life and display different techniques and skills with distinct calligraphic styles, but like art it can be attempted and give a simplified take on this artform compared to others.

As well as having meaning art is also valued for the beauty that is exemplified through its choice of bold colors, shapes, patterns as these are the key features of this art form. When artists let their imaginations run wild, their creations instantly make drab looking places more appealing and vibrant while also giving a sort of messy or clashing look that makes it stand out more in cities, alleyways, and abandoned places or buildings. Graffiti allows this unique artform to be as expressive as one cannot be with traditional art as it can be unrestrained, and even be anonymous

if they choose to. Status does not matter, and the lack of limitations allows artists to break conventions to create innovative breakthroughs in art and more authentic pieces of art or graffiti. However, there are others who complain and state that graffiti is seen as ugly, vulgar, and threatening the peace of society. Graffiti is a pretentious subcultural backbeat that is replicated everywhere in much the same style, deeming it as repetitive, boring, and expresses a generalized contempt for community, kindness, and for the weak. Graffiti is an artform that is seen as “hypermasculine” while also being aggressive and destructive of private property in the support of a decent world, but what does it all contribute to? Does it add anything meaningful to the world?

THE CULTURE AND APPEAL OF GRAFFITI

What makes graffiti stand out more is the communities that it reaches out to. Like murals these two art styles share differences and similarities alike but are quite different in contrast if you really think about it. In an article that I read titled “The writing on the wall: exploring the cultural value of graffiti and street art” by Allison Arteaga Soergel she discusses about Imanuel Illescas and his view on graffiti as he also became a “writer” after seeing the many messages that were written around his neighborhood and began to understand the meaning behind graffiti.

to achieve respect from their peers and assert their dignity, and that doesn’t come easily from other places and institutions in society.” Graffiti is a multiracial and multi-ethnic subculture, and Illescas says his research aims to recognize the specific contributions of Black and Latin communities. He’s also critically examining the subculture’s hypermasculinity and how that may limit its transformative potential. And he’s particularly interested in shedding light on how race may affect public perceptions of graffiti.

RADICAL GRAFFITI

Illescas gathered an insight on how graffiti connects with their writers as it connects them with concepts of art, identity, culture, and space. In the article it is mentioned that “Alot of the most popular graffiti yards in LA are mostly abandoned spaces in communities of color that neither the economy nor the city has been willing to invest in, he says. But graffiti allows Black and Latino young men to transform these spaces in of congregation and empowerment.” “In a city where these youth are marginalized, ostracized, and invisibilized, graffiti is a way for them to become visible,” Illescas said. “They feel that the system is against them, and upward social mobility is limited for them, so putting their names up around the city is a way for them

Graffiti and street art are other forms of communication in social and political issues that arise in today’s day and age. They raise topics of controversy and create places where people can openly express their opinions about said topics freely. Graffiti tends to spread a bit more whenever times of crisis or current societal and political problems, it serves as a messenger and a voice for those whose voice cannot be heard every day in mainstream media. Unemployment, bailouts, debt, injustice, war, and crises: all these issues motivate graffiti writers and street artists in cities all over the world to broadcast their concerns. They use their art to call attention to refugee crisis’s, terrorism, slavery, environmental pollution, video surveillance, racism, gentrification, and rising rents. Thus, they contribute to societal opinion formation and self-reflection. They can even do more. I remember reading an article a couple of months ago that discussed graffiti artists “tagging” and scaling an abandoned empty state project that was 30 floors and located in Los Angeles.

Many people from that area and close to it came to see the many displays of graffiti and residents were at a divide over whether the taggers work was to be appreciated or covered up by the city government and cleaning crew. Alot of people were amazed at how coordinated this all had to be especially under police surveillance at an all-time high when they were asked to work overtime and monitor the building so that taggers could not enter

the building. While many people would see it as an invasion of private property or a display of artistic talent, this tackled the greatest issue, housing, and development. The original development plan that was posted was a 184 – room Hyatt Hotel, a massive open-air galleria for shops and restaurants and more than 500 luxury condominiums but due to funding the plan was left alone four years since the initial start date when they broke ground. Ever since the building lay dormant graffiti taggers came in and started to break in the building and deface it as it was the start of the development of a debate that even gained traction on social media platforms like twitter where I hear about it for the first time.

The U.S. government struggles to convert its own abandoned buildings to shelters as around 200 of the buildings that are made available for homeless shelter providers by 2016, only a very few numbers were transferred to non-profits, and with recent law change by the supreme court on June 28th, 2024 where homelessness can get you arrested even if you have nowhere to go you can already see how this is not even an issue, but rather a problem that could really be solved but the Government refused to do anything about it. Graffiti may lead to a lot of oversight on today’s political problems as invasion and damage of public or private property and defacement of vulgar wording, but being able to rise onto injustice of our nation as a blessing from the unfairness that others face.

COVER UP ACT

Graffiti has been an issue to property owners or public transit services like trains and buses getting “tagged” as it reduces the property value and attracts unwanted attention for if it is not dealt with it can spread and become more difficult to remove. Cleaning removals and graffiti cleaners have been diligent at work for trying to cover up and wash off all the graffiti that has been considered “damaging” and not only is it harmful for the environment but also for how costly it can be especially for some companies like train systems, Metro trams, and even some powerplants that get “tagged” overnight. It can also prove to be difficult to get graffiti off the streets or buildings that this affects most local businesses and harms their business and end up moving out and even if the graffiti was not dealt with a lot of customers were neglectful to go in the store as it affects most businesses in the city.

Cities and other property owners are at a constant struggle to remove unwanted graffiti as cleaning companies continue to utilize different strategies to combat graffiti as some have created websites

dedicated to report or hire a cleaning crew to come and wash off the graffiti and others use extensive public relations programs. These programs typically include educational efforts, graffiti telephone hotlines, a crackdown by police and courts, restitution by convicted offenders and strict lockup ordinances requiring that spray paint sold in stores be locked in cabinets as opposed to place on open display shelves. Even schools are important in dealing with graffiti as a lot of students most commit crimes during those times when they miss school or are suspended, and it is important for them to stay in class and prevent students from falling into a life of crime and vandalism. There have been many restrictions, programs, and cleaners at work to get graffiti out of the streets and prevent vulgarity and keeping cities clean.

GRAFFITI, A SOCIETAL SHIFT

As times changed graffiti as an artform has evolved and changed the way we see things from a social aspect. Graffiti strikes fear in the cities that we call home for they say that artists like these can inspire others to be vandals, but I don’t think that inspiration and creativity is bad but it’s an innovation that the liberty of expression that anyone can do and that level of rebellion that allows us to question the world around us as well as the risk and thrill of creating a name for yourself not only in recognition of your art but as the artist as you get to marvel at the work of others along yours at the world becomes your canvas at your own will.

The art world has shown how valuable and influential this is for us as it encourages others and empowers new generations as they gain a new appreciation of art and create an artistic reputation for themselves. And even if graffiti would be legal, it would grow to be boring and not as impactful as it is and create this impact where we see where it is liked and appreciated by artists of all kinds but a societal threat and political impact to the streets and nation.

OF MICE & (LITTLE) MEN

Serves 50

Ingredients

2 packages chocolate chips

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 packages Oreo Sandwich Cookies

maraschino cherries with stems

1 package Hershey’s Kisses®, unwrapped sliced almonds

tubes of red and green ready-to-use decorative icing

Instructions

1. Put chocolate chips in double boiler over medium heat and fold in vegetable oil as they melt.

3. Create assembly line with Oreos, chocolate, cherries, Kisses, almonds and icing.

4. Dip a cherry in the chocolate and place it on the snow. Gently press a Hershey’s Kiss against the cherry until it adheres to the melted chocolate.

5. Dip one end of an almond slice into chocolate and hold against the flat part of the Kiss until it sticks in place as an ear; repeat for other ear. Using a toothpick, apply colored icing, dabbing on the eyes and nose. Place on tray and cover with plastic wrap. Unveil for your holiday party.
