As the silvery hours of summer slowly give way to the golden days of autumn, many couples are nearing the home stretch of their wedding planning. After all, fall is the most popular time of year to get married

in New England. Almost nothing compares to the uniquely colorful sights, rich smells, and warm feelings brought on by this time of year. For those of you just starting on your planning journey, don’t let the tasks involved with orchestrating a wedding get in the way of your ability to enjoy the season. Instead, head out into the action and explore all of your wonderful options—there’s no better way to get inspired and gather ideas. While you’re out, you’ll probably notice that this year’s biggest trend is “rustic.” Put in a search for “rustic weddings” on Google or Pinterest and your screen will fill with glowing images of wood, burlap, lace, twinkling white lights, and wildflowers. Simple, romantic, and full of texture, this theme is usually pretty budget-friendly and works in just about any season. Think this might be the way to go? Check out “Rustic Beauty” on page 56, where we’ve gathered some great ideas to get you started. While trends are a great way to gather

inspiration for your wedding, it’s important to keep in mind that how you plan your wedding is entirely up to you. Don’t try and squeeze yourself into a mold that doesn’t fit your personality and tastes—it will definitely show through and will probably make your planning experience less than enjoyable. Love all things sci-fi? Go for an intergalactic theme. Do classic movies make you swoon? Then old Hollywood might be the way to go. The point is, you should always trust your gut and do what makes you happy. As always, this issue is chock full of ideas and advice to help you reach your wedding goals. Check out “Fave Favors” on page 74 for some unique ways to thank your guests, and don’t miss “Go Lush, Go Long, Go Glam” on page 30 for an all-inclusive guide to fall eye makeup. “Unplugged Weddings” on page 48 provides a great perspective on why banning guest photography at your wedding can make it a more enjoyable experience all around. Imagine a painting that captures one of life’s most precious moments. As a celebration artist, painter, and former special education teacher, Susan Dunshee has been gaining popularity over the past two years as a memory-preserving expert! She makes it her business to bring a love of art to the masses by creating one-of-a-kind live-event paintings at parties and special events, including weddings. In addition to her event work, Dunshee hosts and teaches step-by-step painting classes in her studio, Just Paint, located on West Boylston Street in Worcester, and she’s been known to create original, hand-painted wedding favors, too. Susan’s work was born from a desire to provide people with the access to expressing themselves through art on an affordable budget. By living a creative life, Susan has figured out a way to turn her passion into a fun, social, and memorable artistic experience for herself and her many clients—even those who have never painted before. More than a studio name, “just paint” is the phrase she lives by! We spent some time chatting with Susan to discover more about her inspiring talents and unique offerings. What exactly is live-event painting?

Live-event painting is a unique way to capture all aspects of a special event. As a celebration artist, I come to weddings, bar/ bat-mitzvahs, fundraisers, etc., and interact with the guests to create a painting of the event, right there, on site. I arrive with a blank canvas and paint the party room; carefully detailing the architecture and décor of the space before the guests arrive. While the party unfolds, the painting comes to life. As guests dance and create memories at the event, I am busy capturing the mood and overall experience of the occasion in the painting. At the end of the party, the painting is displayed for guests to see, and it becomes an amazing heirloom to cherish forever.

q: Obviously, the majority of people hire

a professional photographer to capture their special day. What is the benefit of also hiring a celebration artist for an event?

Amid a mounting glut of photographs—on Facebook, via Instagram, and in swelling digital family photo archives— live-event paintings not only provide a form of live entertainment for wedding guests who love to watch the painting come to life, but it also creates an intimate, cherished heirloom and keepsake of the big day that can be displayed for years to come. I keep my prices very reasonable because I know weddings are expensive and I don’t want that to be a huge factor for the couple when they are planning their special day.

Beyond an artist, you are also a teacher. Can you tell me about the work you do at Just Paint?

Just Paint is an art studio where I teach up to forty studio guests at a time how to paint step-by-step in an exciting and social environment, all while they are snacking and sipping on beer or wine! Painting can be for any occasion—but especially for girls nights out, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and just about any get together you can imagine. It’s important to know that no experience is necessary, just a love of art . . . All you need is one night or day to create art. I invite the guests to come thirty minutes before the paint party starts to mingle and have a bite to eat and share some drinks. The parties can be catered or guests can bring in the food or snacks of their choice. Drinks are BYOB. The class itself takes about two hours and then guests can wrap it up with an additional thirty minutes of mingling after the painting is done. It’s an affordable and fun way to celebrate.

Nikki and John June 1, 2013 West Boylston, MA Their Story Nikki and John Benoit met where many busy adults meet these days: at the office. “John is the service manager at Acura of Auburn,” says Nikki, “and I worked in sales there for about two years. I had a crush on John for about six months before we finally got together!” Love quickly blossomed between the smitten couple, but they took things slow when it came to talking the “I do” plunge. “We had been dating for five years and living together for four before we decided to get engaged,” says Nikki. “We picked out and purchased the ring together, but I didn’t put it on my finger just yet.” A casual night of watching baseball at home about a week later changed everything, though. “I jokingly brought up the fact that even though we bought a ring, we weren’t technically engaged yet. John left the room for a moment, came back with the ring, plopped back down on the couch next to me, and asked me if I would marry him.

“It was truly a joy to watch all the people we love let loose and laugh and have fun.” I said yes, we had a toast, and then we watched the rest of the Dodgers game . . . Our engagement was very lighthearted and full of laughter, just like our relationship. It was perfect.”

Planning Ten months of planning brought on the requisite level of stress, but Nikki handled it like a pro, asking for help where it was needed and having fun along the way. “Planning the wedding was very stressful at times, but I did enjoy it for the most part. I had a lot of help from my bridesmaids, both our mothers, and the experienced staff at [our venue] the Manor. I tried to make the process as fun as possible.”

Details Nikki and John chose to have their wedding at the Manor Banquet Facility in West Boylston, MA. “I chose The Manor because I wanted an elegant, well-reputed venue with on-site catering and an experienced staff who would be able to help me plan my wedding to the very last detail,” says Nikki. “The sales director and the banquet manager were unbelievably helpful during the planning process and on my wedding day. They took care of details that I never would have even thought to consider.” continued on page 24

In keeping with their mutual love of baseball (and their adorable engagement story!), the couple sprinkled a few baseball-themed details throughout their wedding. “Our cake topper was a bride and groom playing baseball, and instead of a guest book, we had our guests autograph professional baseballs, which are now displayed in our home.” While the baseball theme lent a casual air to their big day, Nikki and John also wanted their wedding to be elegant. “Our ceremony took place in the same room as the reception,” says Nikki, “so we used a wooden arch that The Manor had on hand and decorated it with long branches with cherry blossoms in full bloom. The effect was stunning. We also chose tall vases for our centerpieces so that they would really stand out. My bridesmaids wore a deep, rich purple, which we used for our centerpieces and linen napkins as well. It felt very regal.” Like many couples, Nikki and John’s main goal was to make sure that their guests truly enjoyed themselves. “One of the major highlights of the day was all the dancing,” says Nikki. “I was in the middle of the dance floor with John at one point, and I just remember looking around and realizing that a good majority of the room was on the dance floor with us. Our parents, our aunts and uncles, our friends, and both of our grandmothers (both eighty-four years old at the time, and John’s is bound to a wheelchair) were dancing with us, with huge smiles on their faces.

Advice “My advice to brides- and grooms-to-be is not to stress out too much with the planning process,” says Nikki. “You’re just throwing a big party. Have fun with it! Also, don’t shoot for a ‘perfect’ wedding. Things will go wrong, so if you set your expectations too high, you’ll end up disappointed. Rather than ‘perfect,’ aim for a ‘joyful’ wedding, or a ‘superb’ one. Those are much easier goals to reach.”

Amy and Lou October 19, 2013 North Andover, MA

Their Story The story of Amy Farnhill and Lou Beckwith sounds like the plot of a romantic comedy, or perhaps a lighthearted adventure novel. The two found each other in the middle of a nor’easter at Camp Uno in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where a group of mutual friends were gathering for a weekend getaway. “When the boys arrived the lonely mountain road wasn’t plowed!” says Amy. “So, Lou, along with [his friends] Greg and Tim Grogan, knowing cars full of cute girls were on the way, dutifully walked through five feet of snow.” After the trek through the snow, Lou hopped onto a snowmobile and towed Amy and her friends up the snow-packed road to the cabin. “This is the moment when I knew he was my man,” says Amy. Owing to their adventurous first encounter, Lou proposed to Amy at Camp Uno on December 16, 2011. “The room was aglow with candles and covered with flowers,” Amy gushes.

“Lou read a beautiful poem he had written . . . when he finished the poem, he got down on one knee and asked the biggest question of his life!” Shocked, dazed, and wonderfully surprised, Amy answered “yes.”

Planning Planning Amy and Lou’s wedding was a family affair. Amy—along with her entourage of female family members—went out looking at venues, trying foods and cakes, and meeting with DJs and florists for about one year prior to the wedding date. “The final touches and muscle were handled by the groom and his willing male entourage,” says Amy. “Wedding planning can be a stressful endeavor, but it brought two happy families together.”

Details The desired elements for Amy and Lou’s autumn wedding were casual, comfortable, outdoors, and fun. “We chose Smolak Farms in North Andover because it was the perfect setting for a vintage country wedding.” Upon arrival, guests walked a path lined with fabric banners and followed painted wooden signs directing them to the ceremony, reception, and fire pit. Adirondak chairs draped in vintage quilts surrounded the fire pit, where guests could make s’mores and light sparklers.

“The maid of honor rapped an original rap to the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to tell the story of how we met.” To accentuate the rustic feel of their wedding, the couple displayed a lace tablecloth and wooden clothespins for escort cards, a painted milk crate for gifts, and a printed family tree where guests could pen their well wishes. Also displayed were wedding photos of family members who had passed, framed with beautiful quotes and words of love. The reception was festive to say the least. “During the introductions, we drove into the tent on a golf cart and just stopped short of the family table,” says Amy. “The maid of honor, Emily Farnhill, rapped an original rap to the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to tell the story of how [Lou and I] met.” After this entertaining introduction, guests enjoyed hot cider, clam chowder, hotdogs, and a clambake dinner served by LittleNeck Clambake, along with an all-night open bar from Andover Liquors. Cornhole games designed and handcrafted by the best man, Tim Beckwith, were enjoyed by all out by the fire pit. The entire night was filled with dancing and laughter. “Lou’s grandfather danced the continued on page 28

It was important to both the bride and groom to add their own personal touch to every single part of their night. “Having our family and friends all be a special part of the day really made it the perfect wedding.”

Advice Practical planning is at the top of Amy and Lou’s advice list: “When the planning starts for an outdoor wedding, think about the seasonal daylight and evening times and temperatures along with any venue restrictions,

such as parking and bathroom facilities. These are not glamorous aspects, but very important for event facilitation.” On the philosophical side of things, the couple stresses compromise and honesty: “Make sure you decide what’s most important to you and your fiancé before involving others. It is important to be on the same page with each other and to know beforehand what you are willing to compromise over and what you are just not willing to let go of.” Lastly, says Amy, “ENJOY every minute! Don’t get worked up over minor details.”

hen it comes to wedding-day makeup, trends come and go just like any other fashion. However, figuring out your style, based on what works best for you is priceless.

“Not every trend works for every bride,” says Kristie Lee Laskes, owner of NKD Waxing, Lashes, and Makeup in Worcester. Smokin’ Hot Eyes Smokey eyes, touches of metallic, distinctive lines, flecks of glitter—these are all trends that will make your eyes sparkle this fall! Everywhere you look, eyes are the focus, with an emphasis on full and lengthy lashes to create a dramatic, yet romantic look. Who hasn’t heard all about the smokey eye these days? This style features textured layers of black, gray, and even shimmery silver or white, strategically placed around the eyelid. This luscious, layered look is oh-so popular, but done wrong it can appear heavy and dark. For some brides, it just might not be the right look for her special day. However, there is a lighter option on the smokey eye spectrum and it is created with shades of chocolate brown to light mocha with sparkly tones of beige. It presents the same kind of drama, but without looking so harsh for some. “Making the smokey eye work all depends on each bride’s skin tones, eye color, and her personal style,” says Kristie Lee. “Another equally dramatic look, possibly more popular with today’s brides, is the retro 60’s, cateye look created with either thick or thin liner.” This style can be paired with metallic shadows or glittery eye makeup. Used in conjunction with lashes it’s a strikingly beautiful and feminine look.

Lucious Lashes Just a quick glance at the styles on the runway at this year’s New York Fashion Week and it’s clear that the lash extensions trend is here to stay, especially for brides. “Everyone should, at the very least, do a strip lash for her big day!” says Kristie Lee. Laskes goes on to say, when referring to her work with bridal parties, “As soon as one person gets lashes done, they all want them, because it makes the eyes so noticeably different.” Working outside of her salon, she always comes prepared and stocked with a variety of strips, because never fail, it’s the one look every woman wants and she assures, “If you can wear a BandAid on your skin, you can wear eyelash strips on your lids without a problem.” The strip is the least expensive way to go, and they can be applied the day of an event, which is an added bonus. A longer-lasting alternative to strip lashes are extensions, which are normally applied about three days prior to the big day. Each set lasts about two weeks and can either be filled, or be allowed to fall out naturally. However, one of the greatest bonuses about lash extensions—beyond the thick, full, overall spectacular look—is the fact that there is no need for mascara, which means no unsightly raccoon eyes during the emotional parts of the wedding, or when you’re dancing the night away!

Lip Service So, the eyes have it . . . but don’t forget about the lips! Traditionally, people focus on one or the other, but when it comes to brides, if it’s done properly, both eyes and lips can pop. Sheer, glossy lips in nude tones are very popular these days, but on some brides, nude lips can become lost in pictures. In that case, a little bit of color can go a long way. Rich, jewel-toned lips were another popular look at this year’s Fashion Week, but it’s important to select shades that work with each bride’s skin tone — not just colors that are fashionable. Using a nude lip liner with a colored lip stain and gloss creates a deliciously kissable look that lasts all night without drying.

Figuring out your style, based on what works best for you is timeless.” popular trend, especially in the fall when tans begin to fade, but it’s not necessarily the best way to go for a bride who has trouble with acne or just wants fuller coverage. In that case, the high-definition look that comes from applying makeup with a sponge or brush might be the way to go. When creating the perfect look for your big day, the key is finding a knowledgeable makeup artist who will work with you to find your best look. Beautiful New England college campus venues

f think your alma mater may not matter in your wedding plans, some reeducation may be in order. New England happens to be home to more than 300 historic, picturesque campuses featuring stately architecture, elegant banquet rooms, glorious chapels, and exquisitely landscaped grounds. Getting married at your dream school may be much easier than you think. When it comes to college campus venues, eligibility varies, so do your homework. Most colleges and universities require the bride or groom be currently enrolled; a faculty, staff, or board member; alumni,;or a child of any of the previously mentioned. Some institutions accept formally sponsored couples, while others are open to all who “apply.” Also keep in mind that wedding dates may be restricted to the summer months and/or academic breaks. Jake and Angela Bowman choose to be married at St. Michael’s College—their “home away from home” —in Burlington, Vermont. “We feel a very strong connection with the SMC community and thoroughly enjoyed our experiences there,” says Angela. Of equal importance, she says, “was having a full Catholic mass at our wedding. The SMC chapel is quite beautiful architecturally, which [our photographer] Andy [Duback] captured very well in our photos.” Duback estimates that he’s photographed five weddings at St. Michael’s College over the years. “Couples who choose to be married there reconnect with their alma mater in this way,” he notes. The renovated 1820 post-and-beam structure that makes up the Red Barn at Hampshire College, “truly exemplifies the natural ambiance of the Pioneer Valley,” says Kate C. Fields, Assistant Director of Sales and Marketing. Situated in the quaint college town of Amherst, MA, the Red Barn has served not only Hampshire alumni, but alumni from other area colleges, as well as those seeking a natural and scenic setting for their nuptials. “The Barn can be decorated to present a casual and laid-back atmosphere, or a more formal, sophisticated setting,” says Fields. “Ceremonies may be held on-site with the Holyoke Mountain Range serving as a beautiful backdrop, and receptions begin with an al fresco cocktail hour on the deck during the warmer months”. Dorothy Siudut and Elliot Matthews of Cambridge, MA, “immediately fell in love” with the “rustic warmth of the Red Barn.” Their June 2014 wedding brought back to mind Dorothy’s many “meaningful connections” and “wonderful memories” of her years as a UMASS Amherst student. On her very first day as Clark University’s Events Service Manager, Jennifer Parissi-Forti met her future husband Kevin, who was also employed there as the Director of Residential Life and Housing. So naturally, Clark—conveniently located in the center of downtown Worcester, MA— ended up being the ideal choice for the couple’s June 2012 wedding. “Our positions on campus enabled us to work with our colleagues to plan a wonderful event, and then have them as our guests,” explains Jennifer. Founded in 1887, Clark retains many of its original buildings, which provide a picturesque backdrop for a wedding. “For an outdoor ceremony we have numerous options depending on the size of the wedding,” says Jennifer. For banquets, Tilton Hall features hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, soaring windows, and a private terrace with campus views. The area is special to us.” Kate concurs. “Given that Peter is a member of the Memorial Church,” she says, “which I also attended while receiving my Masters . . . there was no question of choosing Harvard’s Memorial Church and The Faculty Club for our wedding.” Karen Hyde of Great Beginnings Events used the Harvard colors and shield for their wedding

program and integrated red and gold accents honoring Peter’s Chinese heritage for the reception. “The storied campus, and the combined beauty of the Church and elegant reception made for a memorable day,” adds Kate. While searching for “green and woodsy setting” for their August 2013 wedding, Bill and Brittney Washburn discovered the Connecticut College Arboretum. Smitten with the gorgeous venue, they realized the facility’s indoor space was too small for their event. “Then, the planner quickly directed our attention to the college’s garden area,” says Bill. “It was perfect!” “[The venue] offered just about everything we needed,” says Brittney, including picture-perfect scenery. “The rolling hills, ponds, and exquisite landscaped areas required a lot of hiking around

Why asking your guests not to take photos at your wedding is a smart decision.

here was a time when a bride and groom would say “I do,” a few guests would snap some photos for the family album, and your big day would go down in the annals of family history only to be revisited every few years. Today, with snap-and-share smartphone cameras and social media supremacy, it’s more likely that thousands of strangers will see images from your wedding before you even whisper, “til death do us part.” Custom-created hashtags and wedding photo-sharing apps like MyWedding, WeddingSnap, Capsule, and AppilyWed encourage wedding guests to take photos and videos throughout the day and instantly share their snapshots, even broadcasting them in real time. But is it all too much? And are you

compromising the quality of your professional images when surrounded by amateur shutterbugs? “I don’t discourage people from taking photos, you can’t stop it, but I ask the bride and groom when they book with me to discourage guests from taking them during the important moments,” says Whitinsville, MA-based photographer, Paul S. Robinson, who knows that is a tall order. Unfortunately, he’s learned from experience that during critical moments of a wedding ceremony, like when the couple can officially kiss, that a guest can pop into the center aisle and take a photo on his or her tablet. So instead of a signature shot of that special moment of you sealing your vows to one another with a kiss,

the breathtaking church surrounding you both, there’s Uncle Walt and his giant tablet, front and center, interrupting this once-in-alifetime scene. Robinson says he’s seen an exponential change in guests’ behavior since smartphone and tablet cameras have become standard. If a photographer or their second shooter are looking to get that 180-degree view of critical moments, including the first time being introduced as a couple, the first dance, a bride’s dance with her father, or the groom’s with his mother, the shot can often be riddled with extended arms hoisting camera phones in the air. “It does hinder the professional’s ability to do what he or she was hired to do,” explains Robinson. “When I

I highly recommend unplugged weddings so that the couple and their guests can just relax and enjoy the evening.

take a photo and someone else takes it at same time and their flash goes off, it can overexpose the image. The bride’s dress can be all blown out; you won’t see any detail. I’ve seen images where the couple’s clothing and faces were all washed out.” Robinson admits guests usually take photos with the best of intentions, but they have no idea they are compromising the job that the bride and groom hired the professional photographer to do. Photographer Leslie Boudreau of Lunenburg , MA agrees, “Guest photography at weddings seems to be a natural part of a wedding, but there are definitely a few drawbacks to the popularity of so many camera options these days,” she says. “The other tough part about guest photographers is the lack of faces! During a recessional or a first dance, the backgrounds of images should be filled with smiling faces that the bride and groom will know, but are instead filled with tablets, cell phones, and cameras.”

The ceremony and traditions are meant to be enjoyed and shared with the family and friends of the couple, not their cameras.” Robinson says that one solution is for the bride and groom to let guests know ahead of time that they have hired a professional photographer to capture their day and to please refrain from taking photos—perhaps even for just the ceremony. Breaking the news to your friends and family who suffer from an Instagram addiction might seem intimidating at first, but a multi-layered approach is the best way to ensure the message gets across. Start by mentioning in advance that you’re looking forward to an “unplugged wedding,” where guests will be asked to turn off their cell phones or at least set them to mute and refrain from taking photos and videos. For those who fancy themselves a regular Annie Leibovitz thanks in part to their first Canon DSLR, break it to them gently that your professional photographer will be the only one shooting the wedding. In many ceremony and reception venues this is a legitimate request, as lighting is less than ideal and a second, ill-timed flash from a guest’s camera can completely ruin the shot.

Boudreau has a few basic rules for determined guests who are eager to capture your big day: 1. Find out if the ceremony is unplugged. If there is a sign that asks guests to not take photos, or if the officiant requests it, be respectful and hide the camera. You can reiterate this request subtly on the ceremony program, via your wedding planner, and/or by having your officiant make a quick announcement before the ceremony is underway. “My advice would be to be gracious about asking your guests to be mindful that you’re paying big money to hire a professional to photograph the biggest day of their lives, to respect rules and regulations of the church [when applicable], and be cognizant of the professional,” says Robinson. Another consequence of “snap and share” guests is that sub-par images of your big day can circulate via social media, preventing you from releasing a “first official shot;” that is, a specific image you and your new spouse have chosen to share with family and friends who were perhaps unable to attend the wedding or friends, family, and colleagues who may not have been not invited. “Taking photos and posting them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram is taking away from the anticipation of seeing the photos the couple paid someone to take.” Boudreau also cautions guests to think before posting. “Some guests can be more excited and can post a photo of the bride/groom before important first looks happen. Also, some couples may want to have the first image of their wedding be a professional photograph, so always ask before posting!”

2. Know where to (not) be. Stay in your seat or off to the side, and only take one or two images. Standing in the aisle, walking around the front of the ceremony, or walking on to the dance floor will be distracting and will take away from the event. 3. Wait to post images online. Posting a picture of yourself all dressed up is wonderful, but hold off posting a photo of the lovely couple until the next morning. 4. Don’t photograph over a photographer’s shoulder during formals. Photographers are hired to capture images for the couple and they have spent time posing groups and getting the light just right. If you are looking for a copy of the formal photographs, ask for the photographer’s card! 5. Be a photojournalist! During the reception it’s ok to ask the bride and groom to pose for a quick photo, but earlier in the day they are on a tight schedule and need to run off to a first look, ceremony lineup, or formal photographs, so snap a quick photo as they go by and save the posed images for later.

f a weekend spent kayaking, hiking, and singing around a bonfire with your family and friends sounds like a great way to celebrate your wedding, then a camp wedding may be just what you’re looking for. A number of New England summer camps open their doors to weddings, but the idea is far from mainstream, so facilities, services, and pricing can vary widely. Couples often stumble upon a camp while searching for rustic or outdoor settings for their ceremony and end up realizing that the venue offers just what they want: The chance to relax and enjoy an extended time with guests in a fun, informal setting. Family and friends—often surprised by the idea at first—usually come away asking the couple to plan a repeat getaway. Here are the stories of three couples and their real-life, summer camp-style weddings.

been a summer counselor. “I always thought it was a magical place and we couldn’t think of a better place to spend time with family and friends,” she says. “It’s beautiful with so many built-in activities.” The couple ran the idea by their parents and those friends most likely to object. Alison knew this was not the type of wedding her parents had imagined for her, but they loved it. “Also, Maine is far and expensive to get to from Ohio, where we now live. I was worried that might keep some people from attending,” says Alison. “But

that didn’t turn out to be an issue. All told, eighty-eight guests came from ten different states stretching from New England to Texas and Washington.” Due to capacity concerns, Alison and JT had to make the difficult decision to ask their guest to leave children at home. “A few people were unhappy that kids were not welcome,” says Alison, “but there would have been more than fifty kids. We wanted everyone to have an adult Maine camp experience, participate in activities they’d never done, and relax together.” As guests arrived, they were met with a canoe filled with beer, wine, and nonalcoholic drinks. “That’s the feel we wanted . . . Relax in Maine . . . the way life should be!” The couple especially enjoyed seeing Alison’s seventy-two-year-old grandmother ride the giant swing on Camp Vega’s ropes course, and watching their guests “so happy and loving every minute.” The best part: Nobody was stressed. “We spent our wedding morning tubing, paddle boarding, and swimming with our guests, and then everyone helped decorate the hall,” Alison says. “After our ceremony we partied hard with one of our favorite bands, the Ryan Montbleu Band, who miraculously agreed to come perform for a fee we could afford! Everyone continues to talk about how it was the best wedding they’ve ever been to and we have people begging us to have a reunion or repeat party soon!”

in.” The camp also fit their vision for their wedding. “Ben and I are nontraditional. We wanted our wedding to be fun and not too expensive for anyone, and we knew that the camp food would be amazing.” However, the most important reason for getting married at Medomak was the couple’s desire to “build community” among their families and friends, says Christine. “We were there from Thursday to Sunday. Everyone unplugged and got to know each other.” Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and lakefront swimming were among the camp activities guests shared. “Plus, [camp owners] George and Holly led historic and

nature walks so our guests got a sense of why we loved the place.” Bringing kids was encouraged so the families could get to know each other, Christine notes. As a family camp, “[Medomak understands] what it takes to bring families together,” she says. The group kicked off their stay with ice-breakers led by camp director David Brunner. “We played silly games and then had a lobster feast where everyone had to wear bibs and the ice was really broken!” The wedding itself also drew everyone together. A former camp chef cooked a traditional Puerto Rican pig roast for the wedding dinner, and guests went to an arts and crafts station where they painted rocks that were placed in a circle in the field as part of the ceremony. One of Christine’s favorite moments was walking into the big field for the ceremony and seeing everyone standing in a circle in a vast meadow in full bloom. “I’d been nervous because the sky had been gray and we would have had to move to a barn if it rained,” she says, “but as we came up, the sky magically opened to blue!” Music was an important part of the long weekend, too. Ben and many of his friends are musicians, so there was great music every night around the campfire and for dancing in the barn. “Our cousins from New Mexico said it was like a music festival,” says Christine. “Everyone loved it. Accommodating wedding guests with special dietary needs. by Connie Jeske Crane

Christine Penney, owner of Something Sweet Without Wheat in Woburn, MA, understands the downsides of food allergies all too well. For years, both Penney and her two children suffered from symptoms related to food allergies. Fortunately, though, Penney and her children eventually found relief from their symptoms by eliminating wheat and dairy from their diets. “I don’t take medication anymore,” she says, “just from changing my diet.”

According to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), some 15 million Americans today suffer from food allergies, and although we don’t fully understand why, the ranks of food allergy sufferers are still growing. How does all this relate to your wedding? Well, given the prevalence of food allergies—not to mention guests who keep Kosher, are vegetarian, vegan, diabetic, or have celiac disease—it’s pretty much become de rigueur to develop a game plan for special dietary requests. According to Anna Post, great-great-granddaughter of the renowned etiquette expert, Emily Post, and co-author of the latest edition of Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette, “Frankly I think that anytime anyone hosts any type of party or event it’s something to think about these days, because there are so many different types of food restrictions and allergies out there—and I mean more than just ‘I don’t like parsley.’” So how does a couple go about taking care of their guests’ special needs? We talked with industry experts to get some guidelines.

“Not all guests need to be able to eat the entire menu, but every guest needs to be able to eat something.” Early Communication As soon as possible, couples should talk to their guests about special dietary needs. This can take different forms, says Post. “If there is someone that you thought has an allergy or you know has an allergy, by all means you can reach out directly and ask, ‘So, your shellfish allergy, can you just not eat them? Or can they not even be on the premises?’” If you know your guests well, this casual reaching out can work nicely. Alternatively, some couples today include a dietary question on their RSVPs. However, there’s a caution here. “You may get more information than you want or need,” says Post. Instead of—or in addition to—an RSVP question, she says, “One of the other places that you can put information about that is on the wedding website. You can always say, ‘And by the way, if any of you do have an allergy, please let me know. We’re happy to do our best to accommodate it.’”

Safety First Because some allergies are life threatening, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) has communication guidelines for events like weddings. According to the AAAAI, “Safety depends on effective communication and partnering between the event planners, the caterers . . . and guests.” To learn about your guests’ food allergies, the AAAAI recommends that you provide them with a communication loop so they can inform you of special accommodations. Doing this early gives them time to develop their own game plan for dealing with their food allergies at your wedding. Anyone that comes to you with a serious allergy, says Post, “needs to be taken care of, made sure that the wedding will be safe for them.”

Plan with Your Caterer After gathering information, it’s time to approach your caterer or food venue. Mindy Harris, in charge of marketing and events for Oleana Restaurant Group in Cambridge, MA says, continued on page 62

“That’s actually one of the first questions that we ask when a couple signs their event agreement with us.” When walking a couple through an event, Harris asks whether or not they’ll have guests who have special dietary restrictions. “We know the menu very well and we can make recommendations based on whatever special dietary needs [guests] have. So, if someone is gluten-free we have lots of options.” And while it’s good to be aware of specific needs, Post says a good menu design can cover some unknown bases too. “Any caterer worth their salt today knows to be asking this question, knows to be thinking about how to accommodate this even when the allergies or the food restrictions are not known. That means having a mix of dishes—a little something for everybody. Not all guests need to be able to eat the entire menu, but every guest needs to be able to eat something.” If you have a friend or family member with severe allergies, the AAAAI recommends reconfirming arrangements with your caterer and/or venue throughout the planning process. And as a final doublecheck, the AAAAI says that once they ar-

rive at your event, any guest with such an allergy should alert the servers and manager as well.

Specialty Vendors Finally, sourcing a specialty vendor can really help fill in the gaps. For example, Penney’s company provides specialty wedding cakes for people who can’t consume gluten or dairy. Penney says her company offers an egg-free line, too. “Our frostings are all dairy-free and everybody thinks they’re butter cream, they’re so smooth and velvety.” In some cases, it might even be worth

choosing a venue or caterer that excels at specialties. For example, Harris says Oleana, with its Middle-Eastern style of food, is a natural fit for vegetarians. “One of our greatest strengths is that we have a quite a few vegetarian options on our menu as a staple.” The cuisine has a wealth of spices and flavors, she says, “So vegetarians are generally very happy here.” Taking care of your guests’ special dietary needs may involve a few more phone calls and extra research, but, says Post, “It’s a really gracious thing to think about.” And your thoughtfulness could mean the world to someone else. Penney is still touched by the joy she brings her customers. She says she often goes to work and “There’ll be an e-mail from somebody saying, ‘I was at a wedding this weekend and they had an awesome [glutenfree] cake and it was from your bakery . . . you made me cry.’ And I smile because I know how they feel because I was in their position once. Wedding planner and television personality Samantha Goldberg recently shared her colorful thoughts on today’s trends and fall in New England.

^ Stacey Marcus: What wedding trends do you see as timeless? Samantha Goldberg: 1. Pattern on solid design. It’s amazing what a textured napkin and solid linen tablecloth can do. It’s consistent with over 80% of the weddings in the U.S. today—it’s timeless and elegant! 2.

Lighting. You will never find a wedding that doesn’t have some form of candlelight. It’s inexpensive, romantic, and can make even the gaudiest of décor look elegant. Candelabras are still amazing even if you have seen them 100 times. Each wedding uses them differently, but they are always classic, timeless, and beautiful. Votive cups are almost like a staple. You expect them to be there and they make a room.

3. Wedding gowns. The most popular choice is A-Line. It can work with just about any body type and you can always find a suitable top that allows for the body to be balanced. 4.

Culture. Sharing your culture with your guests is something that provides a special and unique experience for your guests. It authentically celebrates who you are and what you are joining as a union . . . Your guests walk away learning something new, even if you have known them your entire lives.

SM: What’s on the menu for receptions? SG: Many couples are starting to go with stations instead of the traditional sitdown meal. Interactive stations are becoming so creative. Guests love custom options. Comfort foods are back and very strong . . . Serving tapas and comfort stations such as a macaroni and cheese bar are quite popular. SM: What is trending in music? SG: The new trend with entertainment is using untapped resources such as bands in addition to a DJ or MP3 with the band to cover songs that should stay with the original artist. Mixing up the type of music played, which starts as classical and moves into more of a club-ish dance party is becoming quite popular. With the magic of synthesized units, your DJ is now able to use a keyboard to allow for sound, such as a violin as you are walking down the aisle. If you cannot afford a band, think of adding a live instrument for a few hours to play along with the DJ. It sounds live and usually adds some finesse to your favorite song! SM: Are you a fan of themed weddings? SG: Themed weddings can be fun. I am a fan ONLY if the couple adds their own ideas while sticking with the theme. I would advise most couples to be careful and not overdo the theme. Sometimes it’s hard to curtail ideas and instead the wedding day is “too much” . . . less is more.

I love the cold, crisp fall days with warm sunshine . . . Lighting in the fall is amazing and warm. You can add edible items to your centerpieces. SM: How can couples integrate their individuality into their celebration? SG: Couples can begin by sitting down together and writing ideas abut how they see the day. Collaboration might be something totally awesome when you both share the vision. For those who have trouble creating a vision for the day, grab a bottle of wine, go online,

and pick out the events you absolutely dislike. This is actually a fun activity with lots of laughs and quality time planning together. SM: What makes New England a great destination? SG: Surprisingly, New England is still an uncovered treasure. It encompasses so many themes. Romance is just an appetizer before you begin to explore its beautiful rolling hills. This includes the opportunity to have your wedding in one of many beautifully decorated rustic barns or bed and breakfasts . . . If I were to explain just how special New England is, I would say, “It’s like someone put together all of the right ingredients to make the perfect setting, added it into the state, and you just have to show up.” SM: Do you believe in happily ever after? SG: With my red sequined heels as my guide, I do believe in “Happily Ever After,” hands down. Each potential partner I meet brings me closer to my own fairytale. If you can tolerate bumps in the road, set realistic expectations, you will find your prince when the time is right. Always remember, patience means everything, especially when you seek forever. Pack an emergency kit Hopefully nothing goes wrong on your wedding day, but it’s smart to put aside a few “just in case” items. Think safety pins, deodorant, pain relievers, tissues, mints, scissors, Q-tips, stain remover, hair elastics, bobby pins, floss, a nail file, and Band-Aids. “These cover the real necessities,” O’Mara says. “The items could be put in a little purse or bag for the bride, and the maid of honor could take care of getting this little tote to the ceremony and then to the reception.” Note: If you have a wedding planner, they’ll likely pack an emergency kit for you. Feel free to assign this task to your maid of honor or other trustworthy person if you’re overwhelmed.

Give your vows the once-over Even if you have them memorized, you don’t want to stutter when reciting your vows to your to-be husband or wife. ention New Jersey beaches and those who’ve never been there often think of the Jersey Shore reality TV series, but residents are quick to point out that Snooki and friends are from New York, and New Jersey’s 130 miles of Atlantic beachfront is lined by tranquil villages, as well as lively party spots. You can practically see the changes as you drive, bicycle, or stroll along the shore.

One minute, you’ll be on one of New Jersey’s lively iconic boardwalks in a whirl of fast food eateries, shops, carnival games, and roller coasters, the next you’ll be on a quiet swath of broad, white sand.

Lost in Time Tranquility A favorite with in-the-know couples looking for a tranquil hideaway is Spring Lake, an oasis of calm with two miles of tranquil beach and the longest non-commercial boardwalk in the state. Named for the clear waters of its underground springs, the town began attracting

the rich and powerful from New York City and Philadelphia in the late nineteenth century. The ornate Victorian vacation homes they built, with their perfectly manicured lawns and gardens, still line Spring Lake’s wide, tree-lined streets, and the quaint Third Avenue shopping area has casual outdoor cafés, homemade candy shops, and trendy boutiques and galleries. Ten of Spring Lake’s historic mansions have been converted into Victorian bed-and-breakfast inns and boutique hotels, which market themselves together under the banner of The Historic Inns of Spring

Lake. Each has its own charms and none is more than a short walk from the beach. For example, the thirty-seven-room Chateau Inn and Suites welcomes guests with continental breakfast in the morning, and coffee, tea, and cookies throughout the day and evening in its comfy living room. Innkeeper Robert Murray provides guests with beach badges and bicycles (for rent in summer; free the rest of the year), along with suggestions for fine dining, picturesque walking and cycling routes, and other area activities. Those who want to sprinkle in some nightlife or sightseeing can explore neighboring towns. Belmar, where the lively beach scene moves to the bars in the evening, borders Spring Lake, while hip Asbury Park is just a few towns up the road. Also in the area are top-rated golf courses and a growing number of craft breweries, wineries, and opportunities for ocean fishing, surfing, kayaking, and parasailing. Most couples though, are drawn to Spring Lake for what it doesn’t have: No noisy bars and no wild beach scene. Instead, they’ll find intimate lounges where a pianist might entertain on weekends. Among the most romantic places to dine are Whispers, an intimate restaurant in the historic Hewitt Wellington Hotel and the Black Trumpet, located in the Grand Victorian Spring Lake. Next door, The Breakers on the Ocean, a popular wedding spot with a wrap-around porch, also has a restaurant wth lovely ocean views and a small lounge with live music. Barbara and Jerry Bananti, owners of Jean Louise Homemade Candies in Spring Lake, decided to get married and spend their wedding night at The Breakers. “It was relaxing for everyone to have the ceremony and wedding in one place, and we enjoyed not having to worry about getting everything together and leave at the end of the night,” says Barbara. It was windy and raining on Barbara and Jerry’s wedding night, which meant switching the cocktail hour from the outdoor porch to the Crystal Ballroom. “Shannon [the hotel’s wedding planner] handled everything and also arranged for us to take our ‘first look’ photos continued on page 90

with the ocean in the background from their porch,” Barbara recalls. “It was a great moment. We had the porch to ourselves . . . We also snuck out of our reception when the rain stopped to take photos on the beach.”

Las Vegas by the Sea About two hours by car from Manhattan, Atlantic City feels like Las Vegas by the sea. Themed casino resorts, grand spas, superstar entertainment, and its iconic Boardwalk make Atlantic City a great honeymoon spot for those who enjoy having round-the-clock entertainment at their doorstep. Catch a performance by your favorite band, comedian, or A-list celebrity at a venue such as House of Blues at Showboat, Ovation Hall at Revel, the historic Boardwalk Hall, or The Event Center or Music Box at Borgata. Once here, you can park your car and set out on foot for a night of fun. At the luxurious Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, you can spend an afternoon at one of two spas, enjoy gourmet cuisine by celebrity chefs including Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, and Geoffrey Zakarian, or savor the signature thirty-six-ounce Gotham Rib Steak at the famous Old Homestead Steakhouse, then catch a concert or comedy act. Top it all off at one of four signature nightlife venues or take a spin at the roulette table—all without leaving the resort. Most of the casino lounges also offer free live music. Summer months also bring live bands and DJs to a number of beach bars. Among the most rocking are Bally’s Bikini Beach Bar and Landshark Bar and Grill at Resorts Casino Hotel. Summer honeymooners can also take advantage of Atlantic City’s water sports, from surfing and kayaking to windsurfing and parasailing, all just steps from your hotel. Not surprisingly, Atlantic City is also a fun wedding venue. Erin and Wilson Rodriguez got engaged in Las Vegas, and “in keeping with the lucky-in-love theme,” chose the Water Club at the Borgata in Atlantic City for their wedding, says Wilson. The invitations played off the casino theme, using playing cards for the invitation, directions, accommodations, and their RSVP. Erin says they were drawn to the Water Club by its famous chef (Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian serves as the hotel’s culinary lifestyle consultant) and a beautiful area they used for their reception that that can be closed off from the hotel, with trees and a pool with a transparent cover that allows it to serve as a dance floor. “The see-through dance floor was a really neat experience and the area is beautiful. You walk in past a waterfall and there are trees everywhere, so you feel like you’re outside. Even the ceiling is transparent, so you’re seeing the lights of Atlantic City,” the couple recalls.

The couple and their guests took full advantage of the locale. “Thursday night we caught a band and wrapped up the last wedding details, Friday was a spa day for the bridal party and the rehearsal dinner, and Saturday, the bridal party got ready for the wedding in a Water Club suite with towering views of Atlantic City,” says Erin. “One of the nicest things was that the wedding kept going all night.” With guests arriving from as far away as Shanghai, Athens, Bangkok, and across the United States, many turned the wedding into a mini vacation/reunion, meeting up regularly to go to comedy clubs and the beach. “There was a lot of partying,” Erin says. “It was a getaway wedding without having to drive for us and a lot of our guests.” Geri Bain is a freelance writer based in New Jersey.
