ydrangeas and dahlias and orchids, oh my! With so many dreamy blooms to choose from, it’s no wonder you’re overwhelmed with wedding flowers. Luckily, Jenifer and Gerry Gaudet are happy to help. They’re the owners of A Beautiful Bouquet in Leicester, MA, and as their name suggests, they make some beautiful arrangements. We got the inside scoop on how this home-based flower shop got started, all the styles to look out for, and what to keep in mind when deciding on flowers—from centerpieces to bouquets and beyond.

did you get into the flower
business?
a:
Flowers have always been a love of mine. I went to agricultural school in Danvers for floriculture and worked in flower shops for years. But about seven years ago, it was time to be on my own. There was certainly a learning curve—I only took one business course in college! But with the help of my husband and the Internet, we figured it out.
q: What’s it like working side by side
creating arrangements for other couples?
a:
For the most part, I’m the creative force, but Gerry’s there running vases to the table—and he always has to make sure everything is perfectly centered! We balance each other out in a yin-and-yang way. Gerry also takes care of most of the back-end stuff while I do the pricing and design.
q: Do you have a certain style you’re
partial to, or do you always customize your designs?
a:
We always want to make sure we do whatever the bride is looking for, and I always like to add in her favorite flower, if she has one. (I always ask at the beginning of each appointment.) Contemporary style (something modern and minimalist) is a little difficult—I’m more comfortable with a “natural garden style,” as I like to call it. If I’m giving my free hand, I usually go with whatever’s trending at the moment.
q: So what is trending right now? a: Lots of natural elements! Things like greenery, berries, and pods. Nowadays, I get so many requests for trailing greens or all garland and no flowers—the look is beautifully natural and neutral. Also, bouquets and boutonnieres have become much more refined. They used to be very one-dimensional and now people like them more layered.
What steps can couples take to ensure they choose the right flowers?
a:
Pinterest is a fabulous resource—but it’s important to remember it’s global. You can bring in a pin that’ll say something is a “fall flower,” but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a fall flower available in New England—maybe in California or Europe! It’s always helpful to do your research beforehand. Nevertheless, pictures definitely help so I can get an idea of the style the bride is looking for.
q: What’s your favorite part of your job? a: I had a bride last summer who I
remember was waving her hand in front of her eyes, teary-eyed when the flowers were brought in, and her mom was gushing, saying that they were perfect. Everyone was oohing and ahhing. That’s how I want to end my day every day. That’s my favorite part.

Diana and Michael Whelan October 10, 2015 The Riverview in Simsbury, CT Diana Bierman and Michael Whelan wed on October 10, 2015, at the Riverview in Simsbury, Connecticut. The two met in 2008 at a college party while attending the University of Hartford, and have been inseparable ever since. On February 15, 2014, the couple gathered their close friends and family to celebrate Diana’s birthday, but Michael had more in store than a small birthday celebration. Unfortunately, a snowstorm left the couple feeling nervous that their friends would not be able to make the trek for the celebration.

Despite the awful weather conditions, Michael made sure all of Diana’s friends were present before revealing his big surprise. He stepped towards the center of the room and proposed a toast to Diana, which caught her by surprise. Her heart skipped a beat as Michael continued, “That’s not the only reason I got up here.” Before getting down on one knee, he explained in front of all their friends that he had made a promise to Diana on their first anniversary: to love her forever. The two knew from the very beginning they were meant to be together! They were engaged for about 20 months and spent every moment enjoying the planning process. They chose the Riverview after exploring venues in both Diana’s home state of New York and Michael’s home state of Massachusetts. But because they had met in Connecticut during college, it only seemed fitting that they should get married there. The two decided to emphasize their favorite season—fall. They played off the gold chandeliers from their venue and created an elegant fall motif. Diana dressed all ten bridesmaids in gold Adrianna Papell dresses. The favors were gold-foil matchbooks and gold leaves were placed in the centerpieces and bouquets. These subtle hints of gold gave the wedding a more elegant feel continued on page 20

than the typical rustic fall wedding, which was just what the couple wanted!
“They played off the gold chandeliers from their venue and created an elegant fall motif.” Right after their ceremony, Diana and Michael danced down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life” then spent the next few minutes alone, taking in the overwhelming joy they felt because they were finally husband and wife. Although the entire day felt like a dream, taking those few minutes to themselves to soak up the “we’re officially married” moment was the best part of the day. Diana and Michael also wanted to share the following advice with all of our readers: “Splurge for that amazing photographer and videographer. Photos and video are the only real lasting memory once the day is over. Trust us, after the wedding, all you’ll want to do (besides grin ear to ear) is relive the day!”

hile we tend to associate weddings with the warmer months, New England is actually a fabulous place to hold wedding celebrations all year long. If you’re still pondering what season is right for your special day—a summer seaside affair or a sparkly, snowy getaway—here’s our look at the pros and cons for each season:
SPRING Pros Spring and weddings are made for each other, agrees Elizabeth Quill, of Elegant Aura Wedding & Event Planning in Boston. “Everything is coming alive, things are turning green again, and everyone’s in a great mood. It’s a great time to have a celebration.” Among other pluses, says Quill, “Even when it’s overcast or a rainy day, photographs come out amazing.” Cons While days are getting longer, Quill says, spring weather can be unpredictable. Not to mention, it’s wildly popular. “A lot of graduations happen during that time, so you’re competing for rentals, especially for tents. Around that time of spring moving into summer we have to be careful of beach traffic on holiday weekends, too.” Tips • Reserve ahead for everything from venues to tents to hotel rooms. • For outdoor weddings, prepare a solid rain plan.
SUMMER Pros Summer offers the chance to play. Sarah True, of True Event, in Madison, CT, says, “Warm summery days allow for the pros of being able to do a wedding outside—sometimes by the water—so you gain a lot in terms of location.” You can also treat your out-of-town guests to “all that New England is famous for in the summer—having lobster and

Add cozy shawls or cashmere wraps for the bridal party, serve luxurious comfort food, and feature dramatic winter backdrops in photography. Stocking the Bar A Four-Season Primer by Connie Jeske Crane Some things never change. When it comes to beverage service—no matter what the season—lots of your wedding guests are going to want tried-and-true favorites. That means wine and beer and a hit of coffee at the end. But while you’re covering the bases, you can also elevate your beverage service from basic to brilliant. All it takes is a few little extras. “It’s nice to work out a personal touch, having one or two signature cocktails available that reflect the personality of the bride and groom and their guests,” says Meaghan Sinclair, co-founder of Booze Époque bartending service in Somerville. Want to amp things up? Here are our four-season tips for doing just that:
Warm Weather “A lot of what we do at Booze Époque is try to use fresh ingredients when they’re available locally,” says Sinclair, adding that this seasonality is a great inspiration for signature drinks. In spring, says Sinclair, “Strawberry, basil, rhubarb—all of those flavors are really popular—those very bright flavors early in the season. And then, as summer rolls along, you start getting many berries, so blueberry cocktails with raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. Tiki-style drinks are another fun twist for summer, says Sinclair. But she cautions to balance that with a less fruity option, “Not everybody is going to love pineapple and coconut.” Finally, she says, “In late summer and early fall, stone fruits come into season and you can do peach cocktails, a peach cobbler cocktail with bourbon, and then some ice and a simple syrup.”

Beyond alcohol, Frank Martino, owner of Black Tie Espresso in Topsfield, says it’s nice to elevate other aspects of your bar too. In warm weather, he likes to create infused waters (think mint and cucumber), and Italian sodas, using Italian syrups and a soda gun to deliver customized flavors like cherry or raspberry-lime.
Fall and Winter “In fall and winter, we’re using a lot of baking spices—cinnamon, allspice, and cloves— some of those darker richer flavors,” says Sinclair. “Something we really enjoy doing is taking the fresh fall fruit and making a muddled cocktail,” she adds. “There’s also a lot of really beautiful pear brandies, and/or an apple spirit, so layering those flavors, fresh pear with an apple spirit, or fresh apple with an apple spirit.” Sinclair says local ciders can add flavor, too. “A lot of people might go towards heavier drinks and spirits in the winter, along the lines of a Manhattan or Old Fashioned, and drinks with spirits like
bourbon or rye,” says Sinclair, adding that another trend is warmth. “Maybe a hot apple cider with some rum and spices and apple slices and different mulling spices to get the flavor of the season.
We’ve worked with people who’ve done a hot chocolate, like you’d do with coffee, where you could add spirits, such as a cognac or spiced rum.” continued on page 30

And with coffees, Martino adds, “Fall is huge. You see a ton of specialty drinks.” He lists pumpkin spice, Nutella, peppermint patty, and chai lattes, and also suggests finishing touches such as biscotti, mini cider donuts, peppermint sticks, or splashes of Baileys, Kahlúa or sambuca.

Stephanie and Michael met at her workplace, Head’s Up Barbershop; he was her customer for more than six years. During that time, they were friends and they often spoke about going out together, but for whatever reason, it just never worked out. One night they decided they would never know what could happen if they didn’t give it a try. They went on their first date, and they knew that night they would be married.

“Planning the wedding was so much fun because it involved everything Halloween, which is the couple’s favorite holiday.”
Stephanie and Michael attended Screeemfest at Canobie Lake Park on Halloween night in 2014. Michael told Stephanie he had lost his keys shortly after they arrived. While he was off allegedly looking for his keys, a man dressed as Michael Myers caused a commotion as he ran through the park with a knife. Security guards chased after him yelling, “Sir, you can’t be in here with a costume on.” The man grabbed Stephanie, put the knife to her throat, and then turned around and opened his suit to reveal a shirt printed with the words,“Will you marry me?” Michael got down on one knee and asked
Stephanie to marry him! The couple planned the wedding in exactly one year. Planning the wedding was so much fun because it involved everything Halloween, which is the couple’s fa-
vorite holiday. Although it was a little tricky to find Halloween items in January and February, the planning process was just as exciting as the big day. One of their memories is hunting for a black spidercontinued on page 34

web fabric to use as an overlay, which they eventually found at Joann Fabrics. The various fabrics used for their wedding came from all over the United States. Leicester Country Club was the first and only place the couple looked at for a venue. They loved that they could have the ceremony and the reception at the same location. Stephanie and Michael took the theme wedding to a whole new level—the wedding party even had their photos taken at a nearby cemetery! Although guests were asked not to wear costumes, Stephanie did make some wardrobe changes to the classic white dress. She customized her dress for the ceremony with dark purple accents, and she changed into a short black-widow dress for the reception. Both dresses featured a spider accent headpiece. The ceremony itself was very beautiful, without many Halloween touches at all. The bridesmaids wore black dresses with dark purple accents, and the beautiful flowers were black with spiders and crystals. At the reception, things got very scary— in a good, Halloween kind of way. Guests

were escorted upstairs for cocktail hour and walked into something truly amazing. A huge moon was suspended over the middle of the dance floor and many bats were suspended from the ceiling. There were purple lights everywhere. Creepy Halloween music played in the stairway and in the bathrooms. The curtains and bar were covered in spider webs and the bartenders placed fake teeth in everyone’s drinks. Each table had a dark purple table cloth with the aforementioned black spider-web overlay, and the centerpieces varied from table to table—some had five creepy taper candles, some had lanterns, and some had cute black Halloween trees. A red hard candy apple sat on everyone’s plate as a wedding favor. The cheese and cracker station was decorated with pumpkins and included some dry ice to give it an eerie atmosphere. The entire wedding day was filled with Halloween excitement, but the couple’s favorite memory was their surprise guest! The wedding party had just been introduced and the couple was about to have their first dance, when the music abruptly stopped and the lights flickered and went out, giving the effect that the power had gone out. Purple lights suddenly came on and machines began to generate fog. Stephanie and Michael were escorted off the dance floor and a Michael Jackson interpreter, along with ten to fifteen zombie dancers, came out and performed “Thriller.” What a fun way to spice up a wedding!

ovember nuptials or a ceremony on a Thursday night are not for everyone, but there’s a slight rise in couples booking weddings off-season or on nontraditional days of the week. Earlier this year, the New York Times reported on the trend: “. . . why compete for space and vendors in the popular month of May if you’re more likely to score a coveted location at a discount in the off-season?” If you’re weighing the pros and cons of an off-season wedding, here’s our rundown on what you need to know:

What Is Off-Season? Sarah True, of True Event, an event planning company in Madison, CT, defines the wedding season this way: “For most of New England, it’s pretty seasonal between May and October, and then the months surrounding that you’re going to see much smaller numbers.” But there are exceptions—special days like Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day are popular for weddings and not considered off-season. As for less popular days of the week, True says, “Because of the volume of people wanting to get married between May and September/October, Fridays and Sundays don’t offer the same type of value that they have in the past. Often they’re still considered peak days today. I think it depends on the venue.” While it’s possible to get a deal at some venues on a Friday or Sunday, True says, “I would say it’s more off-season that you’re going to see value.”

The Cons The biggest drawback is undoubtedly weather. Quill says couples must plan carefully as travel is harder for out-of-town guests. “Take a lot of consideration for guests who are travelling.” Allow more time for connections, have a backup plan, and consider wedding insurance, she adds. “Because you never know what could happen here. 10 Things Brides Forget to Do the Week Before Their Wedding by Claire Swinarski

he week before the big day, you have a lot on your plate. Accomplishing these tasks can make a huge difference in your state of mind before your wedding.Tracey Goldstein at Polka Dot Events in NYC and Sara Kovel at Sara Kovel Events in the Boston area share ten tips to remember on the days leading up to your wedding:

1. Make sure you have a meal plan. “Ordering breakfast and lunch for hair and makeup time is important because it’s often the only time brides are going to eat all day before the reception, so make sure to schedule a food delivery,” Tracey said. “A good meal will give everyone a good start to the day.” Either arrange for food to be delivered or assign someone to drop something off so that you and your bridesmaids can fill up—you’re going to need your energy.
8. Send a schedule to the wedding VIPs. “For every wedding we coordinate, we create a VIP schedule for the wedding party, parents, and other family members or friends who need a summarized schedule of the wedding day so that they know to be there for things like the pre-ceremony photos. Those important events are not included on the invitation, so giving a few select people a schedule makes it easier for everyone,” Tracey said.
2. Prepare a list of photos for the photographer. Wedding photographers appreciate a little guidance about which photos are must-haves, particularly if they’re outside the box. If you want photos with extended family or you found awesome bridal party shots on Pinterest, send the photographer a list of shots a few days ahead of time so that they’re prepared.
9. Buy sunscreen. If you’ll be taking a lot of outdoor photos before your ceremony, don’t forget the SPF. Getting super red right before you’ll be standing in front of all of your family and friends is not ideal. If you’re getting married in spring or summer, be conscious of your skin all season long—try to avoid crazy tan lines and remember that burned skin often peels. If you want to look sun-kissed, opt for a spray tan instead.
3. Have your groom wear his wedding shoes around the house. “Brides are pretty good at remembering to do this, but reminding your groom to break in his wedding shoes is a good thing to remember,” said Sara.
10. Create a getting ready playlist. Having fun music to play while you’re getting your hair done will get you and your bridesmaids excited—as well as calm your nerves.
4. Have your engagement ring cleaned. It should be nice and shiny for your wedding ceremony. Take any other jewelry you’re planning to wear as well so that everything looks good as new. 5. Find someone to handle the gifts delivered to your home. “Many brides forget to arrange for someone to bring in any wedding gifts that they may receive via UPS or FedEx while they’re on their honeymoon and or away for their wedding weekend,” said Sara. “Check in with a neighbor to see if they can hang onto any packages for you while you’re celebrating your new marriage.” 6. Prepare tip envelopes for your vendors. Counting cash or hunting down your checkbook isn’t the best way to spend your reception. Pack tip envelopes ahead of time and assign a point person to hand them out. 7. Pack for your honeymoon. You don’t want to have to wake up the morning after your big day and have to decide what you want to wear on your vacation. Have your suitcase packed and ready to go—including your updated passport, if needed.

Their story began when they first met in elementary school and continued when they rekindled their relationship four years ago while playing in a coed softball league. Trevor proposed to Amanda in the simplest yet romantic way possible—in the comfort of their own home. After a long day of work and the couple sat down to relax on the couch. Amanda noticed Trevor was behaving strangely and she grew suspicious. The next thing she knew, Trevor was kneeling on the floor asking to spend the rest of his life with her.

“It was the perfect proposal for us—no crowds, no crazy planned-out event—just the two of us in the place where we’ve built a life together, with our spoiled cat in attendance”. The couple took about eighteen months to plan their wedding, but with Amanda working in the wedding industry, the planning came easily. They secured their favorite vendors early in the planning process, which made it easier for them to pay it off over the next year and a half. Amanda took matters into her own hands when it came to the color scheme, invitations, decorations, etc. Working as a graphic designer and an artist, Amanda enlisted the help of her college roommate and bridesmaid to help design their invitations and programs to match. She also handlettered all the chalkboard signage for the day, including a welcome sign, bar sign, food menu, seating chart, and 225 place cards. A mint and gold color palette was splashed throughout the wedding decorations. The couple even grew their own flowers for their wedding, while Molly DuBois, owner of Carter and Stevens Farm, designed the centerpieces, bouquets, and other arrangements. Along with beautiful handcrafted decorations, Trevor and Amanda considered the food a huge priority for their wedding day. dishes from a caterer out of Monson, MA, who specializes in local, seasonal dishes. Amanda also owns a bakery, so it was only fitting that she made her own wedding cake, which included a four-tier cake with four different flavors, and a singletier gluten-free cake for her and Trevor to cut. She also made hundreds of lemon and lime shortbread cookies, gluten-free cake pops, gluten-free cream puffs, and mini carrot-cake cupcakes. Along with the mouthwatering desserts, food, and elegant atmosphere, the couple’s favorite memory from the day was their method of transportation. Amanda was transported in her uncle’s Ford Model A car, and Trevor and his groomsmen breezed in on a 1960s Airstream bus. What a fun way to arrive at your wedding!

Fancy colored diamonds are rare. “Natural fancy colored diamonds are very rare, and it is absolutely awe-inspiring how such beauty can be formed naturally in the earth. Only one in every 10,000 diamonds created naturally will be a fancy colored diamond. Rarity equals value. With ‘white’ diamonds in the normal D to Z color grading range, value is based on the absence of color, because colorless diamonds (a D on the color scale) are the rarest. Fancy colored diamonds march to the beat of their own drum. Fancy colored diamonds are any diamond with a color falling outside the normal color grade range. Even very slight color differences can have a big impact on value. It is helpful to know that many natural fancy diamond colors are muted to the naked eye rather than strong and pure. Every naturally formed diamond is as individual as the commitment shared between two people,” says Sue Davidson, graduate gemologist and sales associate at Long’s Jewelers.
Yellow and brown are the most common colors. Red is the rarest. “The colors available are red, purple, green, orange, black, gray, brown, fancy white, along with yellow, pink, and blue. Yellow and brown are the most common of fancy colors available today. The meanings of each color are interesting. Keep in mind they have always been just for fun and entertainment. Here are a few examples: Red colored diamonds show confidence and power; the color red often symbolizes good luck. Pink, like with roses, is representative of creativity, love, and romance. Brown or champagne colored diamonds are often
connected with nature; this earthy color may represent harmony and tradition. Orange colored diamonds symbolize energy and enthusiasm, while yellow colored diamonds show happiness and joy. Blue colored diamonds represent peace, spirituality, and good health. Black many times can be seen as a negative color, but a black colored diamond may represent sophistication,” says Davidson. “The difference in diamond color is primarily influenced by the trace minerals trapped during the formation of the diamond. A diamond is comprised of carbon. What makes a diamond yellow is the amount of nitrogen trapped in its atomic structure. Blue is formed by the presence of boron in the bonding of the diamond’s atoms. Pink is influenced by the result of extreme heat and pressure creating structural defects giving it its pink hue. Gray is formed from an excess of hydrogen. There are some colors that warrant more extensive laboratory testing to determine if the color is natural or a result of treatment,” notes Davidson.

The night was spent dancing alongside close friends and family, thanks to their talented DJ, Paul Lirange of Champagne Toast. “He did a great job keeping the party going and keeping everyone out on the dance floor.” Along with the great music and dancing, the food was another great addition to the night. Playing off of their fall wedding date, the couple chose to go with an autumn-inspired menu with butternut squash bisque for a first course and a turkey dinner as an entree. The highlight of their wedding day had to be the moment their guests joined them on the dance floor to dance to “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).” During that moment, Jess and Chris felt so much love in the room creating an everlasting memory of their special day.

A great solution is color, highlights, hair masques, and balayage—a French method of lowlights and highlights painted onto the hair. Spring makeup also presents problems. Springtime brides want fresh, dewy skin in rain and wind. Try an exfoliating glycolic peel, a recovery mask or an intensive serum mask. All will offer a flawless finish. Make Summer Spectacular
The biggest problem for summer bridal hair is humidity. Counteract frizz and limp waves with keratin treatments, human hair extensions, or braids. They’ll make your hair easier to pin up and are all the rage. Summer skincare can also be problematic. Try using SPF 15 primer, powder blush, shadow sticks, and eye paint. Eye and face makeup for summer brides should be light, yet long-lasting.
