Should You Hire a Wedding Planner? by Connie Jeske Crane
Do you need a professional wedding planner? Basically, there is no right answer to this question. If you’re a DIY fan with Pinterest boards growing by the minute, this option might not tempt you at all. Another couple may be time-strapped and overwhelmed with such a large event on their hands. For them, a planner might be just the thing.
12 Fall 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
Are you curious about this option? We did some research and asked two local wedding planners to answer common questions about the planner’s role. Here’s what we found out: How common is it for couples to hire a wedding planner? In a 2016 U.S.-based survey, The Knot found this practice is actually slightly on the rise. Among couples surveyed, 26 percent reported hiring a planning professional in 2015, up from 19 percent in 2010. What are the potential benefits? Sarah Castro, a wedding planner and designer at Sweet Deets Events (sweetdeetsevents.com) in Newport, RI, feels the number-one benefit is relief of planning stress. “There are dozens of both large and small details that go into planning a wedding, and with no wedding experience, many people don’t know half of them. Hiring a wedding planner will keep you on track with every aspect of your wedding, from vendor selection to executing your vision.” Castro likens a planner to a safety net. “Things can and sometimes will not go as planned. Having someone specifically there to oversee your day and troubleshoot any complications allows the wed-
ding to seemingly go off without a hitch.” Joel Parra, owner and event coordinator at Boston-based Just Planned Events (www.justplannedevents.com), says planners can also help with budgeting and vendor selection. “We can help keep you within your budget, and we can find you the right vendors. We know the industry very well. I’m in Boston—I know the good vendors; I know the bad vendors. I know whom you want to work with. I know whom you don’t want to work with.” And while some clients know exactly what they want their wedding to look like, for those who don’t, Parra says, planners can “guide them through, whether it be
the color scheme, the theme, the décor, the tablescapes, there are a lot of little minor details that are definitely important.” Finally, for larger weddings of 200-plus guests, Parra says planners are especially beneficial. “Everyone I talk to really appreciates the amount of work that a planner puts into a ‘day of,’ and others that don’t hire a planner typically end up wishing they had.” Are there any downsides? Castro says one downside might be added cost. “If your budget is already spread extremely thin, and you’ve already cut all the corners you can think of, it’s possible that a wedding planner or coordinator is continued on page 14
www.bridegroommag.com
13
just not in the budget . . . If your budget has you choosing between a wedding planner and, say, a reputable photographer, photography should take priority.” Also, for some people, says Castro, any relinquishment of control is daunting. “I suggest choosing a wedding planner that you click with. Make sure he or she is on the same page as you for attention to detail and family dynamics, understanding your vision, and overall compatibility of your personalities.”
What kind of packages and price points are available? Packages vary but common offerings from planners include: day-of coordination, which includes communication for the month leading up to the wedding and a point person on the wedding day; partial planning/vendor recommendation; and full planning, which includes vision boards, vendor selection, and execution on the wedding-day coordination. As for cost, The Knot’s 2016 survey
pegged the average amount spent among respondents who hired a planning professional at just under $2,000. Similarly, Parra estimates the average cost for a “day of” in the United States ranges between $1,000 and $3,000. “A full-service wedding package can run from $4,000 to the sky’s the limit.” If a planner supplies a quote that’s significantly lower, he adds, “That’s a very very red flag.” What’s the best way to find a planner that’s right for you? Castro says, “Most planners and coordinators have a presence on the web through various wedding sites as well as a professional company website. Positive reviews and reputable recommendations go a long way when making your selection.” She says the next step is to interview a planner to get a sense of whether or not it’s a good fit. “When personalities gel, your planning process will be fun and enjoyable.” Connie Jeske Crane is a full-time freelance writer and reports frequently on weddings, parenting, sustainability, and social media. You can visit her at www.conniejeskecrane.com.
Want to hire a wedding planner? Before you sign on the dotted line, interview potential planners and throw out some very direct questions such as: • What general services and packages do you provide? • What training, experience, and certification do you have? • Are you available on our wedding day? • Who will be present to handle details on our wedding day? • How many other weddings are you handling that week or month? • What contingency plans are in place if you are sick or have an emergency on our wedding day? • Will you help resolve issues with vendors? • Could you give an example of a planning snag you’ve run into and how you resolved it? 14 Fall 2017

Erica & Chad Kelly
November 5, 2016 Boston Marriott Long Wharf, Boston, MA
Erica Fredette and Chad Kelly wed on November 5, 2016, at the beautiful Boston Marriott Long Wharf. The two had mutual friends on Facebook, and while planning a trip to visit Boston from NYC, Erica reached out to Chad to ask him about the nightlife scene in Boston. At that time, he was part owner of the nightclub Felt. Erica didn’t end up taking that trip to Boston, but a few months later, when she was back in Beantown for work, they ended up meeting for a drink. Erica almost stood Chad up because it was pouring out and the parking on Newbury Street was a nightmare, but she glanced in the window of Sonsie and saw him sitting on a bar stool, anxiously looking out for her. She didn’t have the heart

to blow him off and it’s a good thing she didn’t. They hit it off instantly and after only three dates, they became an official couple. It was 2011, and they began a relationship based on loyalty, honesty, love, and lots of laughter. Fast forward to November 2014. Erica came home grouchy from a long day of work and spotted a five-pound bag of Skittles on the counter. Being a candy fanatic, she was really excited to see such a big bag of her favorite candy. Chad smiled and told her to have some candy. When she reached her hand into the bag, she found the most beautiful ring she had ever seen. Chad got down on one knee and asked Erica to be his wife. Between her tears, she answered yes. The couple wanted to enjoy the engagement and were very happy, so they waited six months before they even thought about planning the wedding. Erica works in the wedding industry, so she knew that once they started planning, it would be nonstop until the wedding, so she held off as long as she could. They agreed that they would find the continued on page 18

venue together; Chad would be in charge of the music and the groomsmen and Erica would handle everything else. Boston was the place where they met, fell in love, and shared years of memories, so it was fitting that they got married there. They discovered the Marriott Long Wharf while at dinner on the waterfront for Erica’s birthday and decided to take a tour. It was just what they both wanted—quintessential Boston with a modern feel. It fit their style to a T. They wanted their guests to check into the hotel and feel like they were on a vacation weekend getaway. Everything was within walking distance, so it was a logistical dream. Erica wanted the wedding to be simple, clean, and elegant. For the centerpieces, they went with a classic white hydrangea bouquet in a square vase, all made by Erica’s mom, and they were beautiful. Her father owns an advertising and graphic design company (Newf Design), and he deigned everything from the save the date cards to the invitations to the place cards. He also made a candy bar with a five-foot 3D sign, which was a huge hit. The candy bar was stocked with sugary favorites including Skittles (of course). The colors for the wedding were ivory, rose gold, blush, and gold. The bridesmaids wore rose gold sequined gowns by Amsale. Erica’s gown was a custom blush gown by Eve of Milady. All the dresses came from Allegria Bridal, the salon where Erica works. The men wore navy blue tuxedos from Men’s Wearhouse. The cake was from Montilio’s in Braintree, and the bouquets were from Whole Foods. The photographer, Eric Snyder of Eric Andrew Photography, is a dear friend that Erica has known for years through modeling jobs. They decided that for the wedding they wanted all candid shots, avoiding the typical posed photos. The couple felt it was important to highlight the expressions and the emotions of the day in the photos, and Eric pulled it off beautifully. One of the highlights from their day was that their best friend, Shawn Davis, got continued on page 20 www.bridegroommag.com

ordained so he could perform the ceremony. He made the nuptials so personal and shared funny stories and tidbits from interviews he did with both Erica and Chad. For the reception, the best man gave a hilarious speech that had the guests rolling with laughter. At the end of the speech, all the groomsmen jumped up and surprised everyone with an awkwardly choreographed dance to a song from Top Gun. Have you even seen middle-aged groomsmen do a choreographed dance for the bride and groom? Erica and Chad want brides and grooms out there to remember that, “your wedding is YOUR day. There are no rules, and you can think outside the box if that’s what you want to do. There seems to be a traditional aspect to weddings, but if that’s not you, don’t do it.”

Stefanie & Clessio Silva October 15, 2016 St. Mary’s Albanian Orthodox Church, Worcester, MA.
Stefanie and Clessio wed on October 15, 2016, at St. Mary’s Albanian Orthodox Church in Worcester, MA. The couple first met while they were both working at a local restaurant; Clessio worked in the kitchen as a cook and Stefanie was a hostess. Every time she walked into the kitchen, Clessio would try his hardest to get her attention. Stefanie was very dismissive and barely looked his way, but Clessio never stopped trying. One night, they both joined their work friends as they ventured out to a dance club where Clessio spent the night trying to get Stefanie out onto the dance

floor with him. She eventually gave in and soon found herself dancing the night away. One could say that they danced themselves into a relationship. Stefanie and Clessio had been dating for five years in July of 2011 when they rented a house in Atlantic City for a week with ten of their closest friends. During their second night there, the group had plans to go out to dinner and to a nightclub. While Stefanie was getting ready, Clessio paced around the room, sitting down, then standing up. More than once, he called up to her room telling her to “hurry up and get downstairs.” Little did she know that he was going to propose and everyone was in the kitchen waiting for her. When she finally came downstairs, Clessio began what she thought was a normal toast among friends, but then he turned to Stefanie, reached into his pocket, pulled out a ring, and asked her to be his wife. Being engaged for five years, the couple had plenty of time to plan the wedding of their dreams. It was important to the both of them to bring their love story alive and to bring the best of who they are together to that day. Stefanie had always been captivated by the Brazilian culture of
Clessio’s homeland, which is rich in music, dancing, food, and fun. They decided to showcase that beautiful culture on their wedding day. For the wedding location, the couple wanted an open space that could accommodate the colors and theme of their wedding. They also wanted an all-inclusive venue where their guests could enjoy themselves all night and stay the night if they chose. The DoubleTree was that

perfect location. They had recently updated all their guest rooms and ballrooms, and they offered different packages to fit the budget as well as their need for space and food. Stefanie attended “The Original Wedding Expo” at the DoubleTree and didn’t need to look any further than that. Clessio and Stefanie share a love for music and dancing so music became the theme of their wedding. Musical notes and sheet music were incorporated in all things starting with the save the dates to the invitation to the place cards and table numbers. For the ceremony, classical music played while guests arrived, and they received personalized water bottles with musical notes on them to enjoy during the ceremony. Cocktail hour featured personalized cocktail napkins with musical notes printed in gold and a handmade card box decorated with gold glitter musical notes. As guests headed into the reception space, they found their place cards decorated with a musical note and a heart. The memory table was illuminated by a sheet music candle that stayed lit for the entire event in memory of the couple’s loved ones. The cake table was decorated with hundreds of small Brazilian desserts that surrounded the three-tiered cake with the couple’s initials and musical notes

painted in gold on the top. Each table had an arrangement of blue hydrangeas and white roses accompanied by handmade table numbers with a sheet music background, the number, and instructions on pronouncing the number in Portuguese. One of the main highlights was a surprise that Clessio and Stefanie had for their guests—something that they always knew they wanted at their wedding. Shortly after dinner concluded, the DJ announced that since “it would be a little too expensive to fly everyone to Brazil, we brought Brazil to the wedding!” At that moment, Brazilian Samba dancers, dressed in traditional Carnival costumes, came out dancing to high-energy samba music. The ladies, covered in feathers and sequins, performed for twenty minutes and then got the guests on the dance floor to do their best Brazilian dancing. The maid of honor and bridesmaids passed out mini Brazilian flags for everyone to wave and they all truly felt like they were at the biggest party in the world. It was so much fun and created incredible energy for the rest of the night.

Miss Massachusetts USA 2017 Shares Beauty Tips by Stacey Marcus Julia Scaparotti is one of those beacons of light who radiates beauty from the inside out. Along with being crowned Miss Massachusetts USA 2017 last November, she was a member of the New England Patriots squad that cheered the team to victory in February. Winning a crown and a ring in the same year is a dream come true for this alluring adventurer who has jumped of an airplane, leaped off a building in Las Vegas, and bungee-jumped off a cliff in Switzerland. The past year has been a whirlwind of activity for Julia. Highlights include meeting Governor Charlie Baker, enjoying a Teddy Bear Tea Time at the Four Seasons, partaking in the Gronk Fitness Expo, attending a senior citizen prom in Burlington, walking in New York Fashion Week, representing Massachusetts in the Miss USA at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, and participating in the Best Buddies Challenge with Tom Brady. We reached out to Julia to ask her for some simple tips for brides to look and feel their best every day of the year. Beauty Philosophy Beauty is elegance, strength, and inner peace. When a woman stays true to her values and accepts her flaws, she will be forever joyful and forever beautiful. Daily Beauty Regimen I start my day by washing my face with IMAGE Skincare’s MAX Stem Cell Facial Cleanser and then I apply Chanel’s Hydra Beauty Creme because my skin tends to be super dry. Because my job requires me to wear a lot of makeup, it’s super important I take care of my skin. I love the Chanel face lotion because it has 15 SPF to protect my skin from the sun’s skin-damaging rays. The lotion is also light and not oily, so it’s not heavy or sticky on my face. Beauty Idol I have always admired Jackie Kennedy and Victoria Beckham for their chic fashion sense and timeless look. Must-Do Beauty Treatment Take care of your eyebrows, ladies. It’s so important to have eyebrows that shape your face. Think of eyebrows as the

foundation of a house—unkempt or over-groomed eyebrows will impact the rest of your makeup look. Find someone who you trust to shape your eyebrows and always go back to that person. I have heard so many horror stories of women getting their eyebrows ruined because they went to a new person. Do your research! With all the resources out there, including micro blading, eyebrow pencils, and eyebrow powder, there’s no excuse for your eyebrows not to look great. Beauty Mistake to Avoid Waxing your face. Whether you’re waxing your eyebrows or your upper lip, you could end up with irritated skin, discoloration, burns, infections, and even allergic reactions. Threading or plucking is much better for your skin, and it also lasts longer. Dream Bridal Look My dream bridal look is to GLOW. I want to have gold highlighter all over my face, super nude glossy lips, and huge eyelashes. Happily-Ever-After Beauty Tip Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, and stay out of the sun! There are plenty of amazing self-tanners and tinted moisturizers that will get you that sun-kissed look without the side effects. Chelsea & Andrew Hudson December 31, 2016 Devens Common Center, Devens, MA Chelsea Coates and Andrew Hudson were wed on December 31, 2016, at the Devens Common Center. The couple met in 1999 on their first day in high school as freshmen. They quickly became good friends and hung out with the same people throughout high school, but they never dated at that time. They remained friends after high school, but stayed busy with their separate lives; Chelsea had a baby boy in 2007, and Andy traveled for work all over the country building post-and-beam houses. To be closer to family in 2013, Chelsea moved back to the town where they had gone to high school and where Andy still lived.
34 Fall 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
They started to spend some of their free time together, and one night, Andy asked Chelsea to dinner. Since then, they haven’t spent much time apart. In the fall of 2014, they moved into a house they built together, with a lot of help from family and friends. During the winter of 2016, Chelsea and Andy decided to take a weekend getaway to Burlington, VT. Chelsea booked a room at the Marriott on beautiful Lake Champlain. They drove up on a Friday afternoon and got settled into their room, which had a gorgeous view of the lake. After breakfast on Saturday morning, Andy suggested they go for a hike. It was one of the coldest days that winter, but it was sunny. They packed their winter hiking gear and drove to Mount Philo in Charlotte, VT. When they reached the top of the mountain, they found a nice spot to look out over acres and acres of beautiful farmland and Lake Champlain. That was the moment when Chelsea turned around to see Andy down on one knee asking her to spend the rest of her life with him. That night they celebrated their engagement together in a warm and cozy restaurant on Church Street. They returned home the next day to tell family and friends the exciting news. The couple got married ten months later on New Year’s Eve. Their favorite part of planning the wedding together was the honeymoon. “Most things are a blur, but finalizing the details for nine days in Kauai was the most exciting part of it all,” Chelsea said. Chelsea had worked at the Devens Common Center for years, so she knew it was a beautiful venue where the staff works hard to make sure that each function runs perfectly. Since the wedding was in winter, it was important to have a venue with nice indoor photo opportunities. “We took photos on the winding staircase, by the piano, and on the bridge that connects the venue to the Marriott. We even went outside on the patio where white lights were strung around the columns and light posts.”

Because their wedding would be on New Year’s Eve, they decided to go with an elegant party theme. They had a table near the DJ with top hats, tiaras, noisemakers, and silver and gold beads. The centerpieces reflected the season with tiered white birch trees, candles, and white flowers set on mirrors. They had food stations around the ballroom that were illuminated by icicle lighting under the table linens. The entire ballroom was lit up, and there was a big screen TV with the Time’s Square celebration playing in the background all evening. Having a wedding on New Year’s Eve made great entertainment a must, and that’s why the couple chose World Record DJs, “who gave the night lots of energy and great music.” One of the most memorable moments was the morning of the wedding when they were told that Andy’s great grandmother, who was almost 103 years old, insisted on attending the wedding. “The family had thought that it would be too much for her, but she wouldn’t have it any other way!”

By the time she introduced them, they were both seeing other people and were not interested. A year later, both were single again, and Michael got a job at the bar where Alyssa was working. “Alyssa and Michael chose the Worcester Art Museum because they wanted a unique setting for their wedding.” entertained at work with conversation and laughter during a slow summer. Mike would bring her veggie sandwiches, and they would exchange random trivia through notes written on guest checks. One day, Mike asked Alyssa out for hibachi. The chef at the restaurant launched a shrimp directly into her boot, which caused them both to laugh uncontrollably. They’ve been laughing together ever since. Alyssa flew home to Massachusetts alone for Thanksgiving in 2015. Michael told her that he had to stay in New Orleans for work. She drove with her parents up to Vermont, where the family was spending the holiday. The day went by and Alyssa and Michael exchanged
texts about how much they missed each other. Right before she sat down to eat dinner with her family, Alyssa called Michael to check on their cats and wish him a good night at work. Little did she know that he had spent the whole day traveling and was currently hitching a ride with her cousins up to Vermont. While she was cleaning up after dinner, she heard a knock at the door. After assurances from
her father that it wasn’t a serial killer, she rounded the corner to find Michael down on bended knee. Michael asked her to be his wife, and through complete shock and happy tears, she said yes. ting married in the summer. They took about eight months to plan the big day. Although working with such a short time frame was a bit difficult, it helped them make decisions faster since there was no time to waste. One of the first things they both knew was a must at the wedding was a candy buffet. They designed the layout and bought all the pieces themselves, mostly online. After careful plotting and planning, they ordered the glass jars (about twenty in total) and had them sent to her parents’ house, because it was close to the venue. Alyssa may have forgotten to tell her parents how much they had ordered, because they were amazed when the boxes started arriving and didn’t stop for three months! The glass jars were soon followed by fifty pounds of candy, dozens of decorations, items for guest bags, picture frames, party favors, and more. Every day when Alyssa’s dad got home from work there would be a new stack of boxes waiting for him at the door. Alyssa and Michael chose the Worcester Art Museum because they wanted a unique setting for their wedding. Stepping outside the box, they opted for the “strolling dinner” concept with multiple food stations because they thought it would be fun for guests to eat and drink while exploring the museum and looking at incredible pieces of art. Alyssa had a very specific color scheme in mind for her “dream wedding,” which they ended up completely ditching and had to start from scratch about three months before the wedding when they realized they needed to design to the space and find colors and styles that complemented the style of the museum. They happily went with a European romantic concept, using metallics and mulberry as the color palette. The ceremony took place in the Chapter House of the Worcester Art Museum, which is a gorgeous stone room from a priory in France, with beautiful stainedglass windows and a large fireplace. For this space, they went with a medieval romantic concept. The aisle was lined with candles and crystal jars leading up to the 42 Fall 2017

altar, which was adorned with large crystal candelabras and grand floral arrangements on either side of the fireplace. A harp and violin duo provided the music. The intimate gathering was very small with about thirty guests who were strictly family members. After the private ceremony, they had a reception with about 120 guests. With two separate floors to work with, the Worcester Art Museum made for a unique venue. Cocktail hour was held on the first floor, which is also where the dance floor and some of the food stations were. On this floor, they used high-top pink cocktail tables with large black satin bows tied around the posts. The dinner tables were set up on the second floor around the balcony, with additional food stations. Table centerpieces alternated between three different styles of varying height and size. The flowers were mostly orchids and roses, adorned on either gold posts or candelabras strung with pearls. All the arrangements featured clusters of candles at the base. The sweetheart table was located at the center of the balcony, so the bride and groom could look over the entire space and see everyone on the dance floor. The grand staircase connecting the two floors was dotted with tea lights, and two grand floral arrangements were positioned on the posts at the base of the stairs. For favors, there was a candy buffet with take home boxes. The candy bar was done in silver, white, and pink, and featured flower-filled vases and a crystal candelabra at the center. They also had a custom wooden wine box made. They asked guests to write the couple a note, piece of advice, date idea, or anything they wanted and put the message in the box, which was sealed for the couple to open on their first anniversary. Michael and Alyssa spent a lot of time creating custom signs for all of the stations and displayed them in beautiful picture frames. They also had a remembrance area where they displayed photos of loved ones who could not be with
them. Alyssa lost her brother Matt two years before, so they had many pictures of him (including one in a locket she carried on her bouquet), and all of Alyssa’s family members and Matt’s friends wore a heart made from one of his favorite blue shirts. The food was provided by Pepper’s and it was “fantastic” according to Alyssa. During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed any of six different hors d’oeuvres, including an Asian tuna tartare spoon, edamame puree in a cucumber cup, and peppercrusted tenderloin crostini. For dinner, four different food stations were set up on the first floor as well as on the balcony. Guests were served small portions of all the couple’s favorite entrées including short ribs with garlic mashed potatoes and an ancho chile seared salmon with mango salsa. Michael and Alyssa both have a sweet tooth, so they went all out for the dessert course. In addition to the candy buffet, they set up a dessert station in the Chapter House. There were two different kinds of wedding cake to try—vanilla with white chocolate ganache filling and a double-layer salted caramel cake. Guests could choose from a variety of dessert minis, including coconut almond joys, peanut butter buckeyes, and cheesecake pops. There was also a small “cutting cake,” which was a beautiful two-tiered cake with dainty silver balls and sparkling embellishments. The entire day was perfection from the moment they woke up. Alyssa loved that she could get ready at her childhood
home and have photographs taken in a place that meant so much to her. The couple wrote letters to each other that they opened while they were getting ready; it was special to feel connected, since they spent the whole day apart until the moment Alyssa walked down the aisle. Their favorite part about the wedding planning process was that they had the opportunity to work closely together to create one vision and bring it to life. For anyone planning a wedding, their advice would be to do what makes you happy. “While you’re planning a wedding, you get a lot of input from a lot of different people—some of it you want and some you don’t. Ultimately, it’s about you and your partner, so make sure the decisions you make are right for the two of you.”

Registry
Update: by Stacey Marcus
The Basics and the Buzz

Just when you thought all the big decisions had been checked off your wedding list, you realize it’s time to create a registry. How does one go about assembling a wish list to outfit your happily-ever-after? We asked two experts to share ideas about how to begin, some basic items to ask for, and what’s trending in the world of wedding wish lists. Where to Begin “Couples should consider starting a registry shortly after their engagement. Friends and family will rely on the registry for special events leading up to the wedding, including engagement parties, showers and holidays, so we recommend getting started early,” says Jessica Joyce, Bed Bath & Beyond spokesperson. Joyce offers three tips for couples who are registering: 1. Dream big! From the smallest kitchen gadget to the biggest bedding ensemble—even fine china and luggage—this is the time to get everything you ever needed and wanted. We recommend registering for at least two-and-a-half times as many gifts as the number of guests at the wedding. Guests will appreciate having lots of choices in a wide range of price points and categories.
Christofle Perles II five-piece place setting
2. Remember to order enough sets of each item. For example, when registering for flatware, you need at least as many flatware place settings as dinnerware place settings. But, you always need more than the number of guests, otherwise you’ll end up washing forks between your salad and dessert courses. Same goes with towels and sheets—register for enough sets to last you until laundry day! 3. Keep in mind that you’re registering for more than your big day; you’re registering for the rest of your life! Don’t just think about where you live and entertain now, but register for where you will live in the future. continued on page 46

The Basics Kathy McTigue, the director of Bloomingdale’s registry spells out the ABCs of beginning your registry, “China, crystal, and silverware are basics that couples should have on their registry. I always suggest registering for enough settings for twelve people. You might not have table space for that many people now, but it’s likely that in the future you’ll host a large holiday gathering and will want to make those occasions special! Good quality cookware is another important item to register for. You’ll get a lot of use out of these pieces. Bedding, towels, and luggage are some other musthaves.” McTigue has been seeing an abundance of couples registering for items in simple shapes and patterns. “Interesting textures can add a modern update to classic white dinnerware. Barware and entertaining products are key categories, as we see many more couples are entertaining at home. Grooms have also become much more involved in the process. Many men are the primary chef in their household and want to make the kitchen selections,” McTigue notes. Hudson Park Collection luxe Turkish bath towel

Beyond the Basics According to McTigue, couples are also registering for nontraditional items like electronics, honeymoons, and down payments for a home. “More casual lifestyles have led to less of a need for ‘formal’ items, and instead, couples are shifting to a more eclectic array of things,” she says. Replacing Rehearsal Dinners Rachel Dodson, wedding and events manager for the Nantucket Hotel + Resort and Winnetu Oceanside Resort, has seen an increased number of welcome receptions in lieu of formal rehearsal dinners. “Cocktails and hors d‘oeuvres lend themselves to including anyone who would like to attend, and allow guests to meet one another before the wedding. These are ideal for destination weddings since guests who have traveled want to see the bride and groom before the wedding and want a more relaxed evening before the more formal event the next day,” says Dodson. Welcome receptions often take the place of rehearsal dinners at Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa, which allows all wedding guests to feel included in the celebration, giving the couple a chance to visit with friends and family who have traveled from out of town, but are not in the wedding party. Typically, the rehearsal dinner breaks into a welcome reception/dinner for many of the guests who choose to stay the weekend. At Stoweflake, the team members always take the extra step by presenting

unique welcome options such as Vermont goodies or small touches throughout the resort that tie the wedding theme together. With the current trend in destination and intimate weddings, guests are having to travel to the celebration more often than in past years. “Couples are aware and respectful of the cost of travel and attend a weekend wedding. They have now started to extend an invite to these guests to join them for a “welcome dinner” instead of a traditional rehearsal dinner,” says Tasha Gray, private dining sales and events manager at the Boston Burlington Marriott. Couples who host weddings in the Berkshires, a destination wedding hub, often want to be inclusive. This is another location where welcome parties are gaining in popularity over the more traditional rehearsal dinner that only includes the wedding party. “In the Berkshires, we have such a great variety of venues that the bride and groom can craft the perfect welcome party to suit their style, so they truly vary, as weddings do too, from infor52 Fall 2017

mal to formal,” says Lindsey HammondSchmid, marketing director at 1Berkshire. Post Rehearsal Dinners “We are seeing welcome receptions that are starting later in the evening (after a formal, small rehearsal dinner) where all guests staying at the host hotel are included. Guests come and go and the recep-
tions often feature lounge-style seating with an open bar and snack foods. These gatherings give wedding guests an opportunity to join together to kick off the weekend festivities. This also gives the bride and groom an opportunity to interact with more of their guests,” according to Michael Boivin and Ted Daniels, wedding planners at the Boston Harbor Hotel.
Blending Rehearsal Dinners with Welcome Parties Michael Oaks, director of sales and marketing at Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina, has noticed a trend of welcome parties rather than formal rehearsal dinners, allowing guests to enjoy a more casual atmosphere at the start of the wedding weekend. “We’ve also seen that couples who have a traditional rehearsal dinner for the wedding party will often host a welcome party following the dinner for all of the wedding guests, offering cocktails and light bites,” says Oaks. At the Revere Hotel, welcome parties have become a standard replacement for traditional rehearsal dinners, or they are being added as an additional event. “Our clients want a casual, relaxing environment to allow wedding guests the chance to get to know each other before the big day,” explains Gary Roderick, director of catering at Revere Hotel Boston Common.
Whatever way you choose to kick off your wedding weekend, be sure to take a moment to savor the wonderful feeling of sharing special moments with family and friends.

My Word: The ABCs of Properly Wording Your Invitations (It isn’t as easy as you think....) by Cindy Papish Gerber
56 Fall 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
After perusing stationery samples, layouts, borders, fonts, foils, calligraphy, textures, borders, and color combinations, you’ve finally selected your wedding invitation—Hooray! Now, comes the hard part: the wording. “The wording of the invitation is an indicator of the type of wedding being held,” says Kim Lanza of Spun Gold Creations Invitations. “It’s the first impression guests will have of the wedding.” In just a few lines of text, it’s important to convey what Lanza dubs, “the absolute must-haves”: who is hosting, the names of the couple getting married, date and time, location of the ceremony and reception, and the RSVP line. Enclosing a response card on which guests may accept or send regrets, check off entrée preferences, and write a personal note is customary, but not mandatory. Additional information might include transportation, directions, accommodations, rehearsal dinner, brunch, and a wedding web address, which can be printed on a separate card, doubling as a portable reference for your guests. Nancy Whalen of Creative Invitations, Ltd. recommends,”Using specific cards for specific pieces of information and not crowding everything on the invitation, unless its a large-sized card that can accommodate additional information legibly. If you plan to have three or four inserts, a pocket-style invitation suite contains all the information in one handy place.” For layout she suggests sticking to a paragraph style and traditional format, because it easily communicates details. Faced with untraditional family situations, such as widowed, divorced, or step parents, “the biggest challenge may be finding rules to follow for your particular situation,” says Lanza. She says that an online search will turn up several examples of title choices and combinations (Mrs. or Ms., Dr. & Mrs., John & Mary Smith, The Families of…, etc.). “It’s perfectly accept-
able for couples to be playful and fun with wording, as long as they are having a more casual or unique event,” she offers. With that in mind, the invitation wording should be, “representative of the couples’ wedding style.” Whalen’s only steadfast rule is to focus on clarity and details. “It’s all about the details, ease of information, readability. There’s really no scenario that we haven’t

encountered.” She saves sample invitations, along with their parts and pieces, because her clients love to look through at them. They can find examples of items that work and customize them. “My daughter, Adrienne Marois, had something very particular in mind,” for her July 29, 2016, wedding to Bill Nickerson recalls Denise Marois. As mother of the bride, she was fully involved in the production and planning of the carefully worded invitation. The groom wanted a mention of his late father, even though it typically isn’t included on the front of the invitation, she explains, “Sometimes you just have to go with how you feel in your heart. Nancy could see that this was an important issue for us and helped us word the invitation appropriately.” Kerin and Edi Naço faced two challenges. Their first hurdle was figuring out the proper etiquette to convey that their October 2016 wedding was an adults-only event. At Whalen’s suggestion, they included, “Adult reception to follow” on the main invitation.
58 Fall 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
“We also addressed the envelopes to only those who were invited. If there were children in the family, the envelope did not read, The Naço Family, but, Mr. and Mrs. Naço.” Challenge number two was “the fact that my parents are divorced,” Kerin shares. Choosing the words, “Together with their families . . . ” as the first line on their classy and tasteful sapphire and coral invitations proved to be the perfect solution. An after-party information card, complete with monogram, web address, and the couples’ hashtag imparted a personal touch. Kristen Szklarz had no challenges with wording the nautical/floral themed invitations she selected for her July 23, 2017, wedding to husband Derrick. After she Googled the proper wording etiquette and looked through samples, ultimately matching the multicolored flowers printed on the invitation to her bridal bouquet, Kristen was confident with her choice. Her advice to invitation newbies is to, “make sure it’s your own, don’t forget to have fun, and don’t rush when you’re reviewing the printer’s proofs!” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. Ashley & Michael Rogers August 27, 2016 Crystal Lake Golf Club, Burrillville, Rhode Island Ashley Schram and Michael Rogers tied the knot on August 27, 2016, at Crystal Lake Golf Club in Rhode Island. Their fathers worked together, so the couple first met when they were teenagers. Ashley’s first impression of Michael was that he was incredibly handsome, and he thought she was breathtakingly beautiful. Although it took years for them to start dating, they both knew they were meant to be together from the start. They got engaged around Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a surprise, but Ashley “ruined it.”

Mike had planned to take her to a restaurant where the two shared their first date and propose there. Instead, she spent the evening tearing the house apart searching for special earrings he had given her that she thought she had lost. It turns out, he had them put into the setting of her engagement ring. While she was in the basement tearing through boxes right before their dinner reservation, she turned around to find Mike on one knee.
“Ashley’s wedding gown was repurposed from her mother’s original wedding gown.” Mike and Ashley took about eighteen months to plan their wedding. They both knew that they wanted an outdoor summer wedding. Mike chose the menu and music because he wanted to make sure personally that everyone had a great meal. Ashley’s wedding gown was repurposed from her mother’s original wedding gown. When she tried the dress on, she knew right away that it was the right dress because it fit perfectly; it only needed a little work to make it more modern. Her seamstress, Jana Berec, completely reworked it into a contemporary and unique style. The train was removable, which allowed Ashley two different looks. During the ceremony, her dress had a long train made of satin and lace; once the dancing started, a few buttons by the bodice detached the train, leaving her with a chic sheath dress. Ashley and Mike decided on Crystal Lake Golf Club as their wedding venue because they loved the rustic feel of the ballroom and the outdoor gazebo for the ceremony. The boat ride for the wedding party following the ceremony sealed the deal. The couple’s first dance was fairly unique. They don’t have the same taste in music, so they started with a traditional dance to the song “Thinking Out Loud” by continued on page 66 www.bridegroommag.com

Ed Sheeren. One minute into the dance, the DJ switched the music to “Wifey” by Next, and the whole bridal party joined in. Ashley’s favorite part of the décor was the seating chart. They created “his” and “hers” drinks with straws and each had a name and a table number on it. It was a great hit because guests could enjoy a drink as soon as they entered for cocktail hour. The nametags were handwritten and Ashley also created chalkboard signs. According to the bride and groom, “seeing everyone relaxing and having a good time was the best part of the day. As much as you work to plan a wedding and as much as it’s your day, it’s really important for guests to have a good time, too. The advice I have for couples planning now is to make sure you give yourself plenty of time not only to ensure that you don’t have to rush, but also to make sure you have enough money saved. I think the main reason planning was so enjoyable was because we stayed under budget. Enjoy it as much as possible—it only happens once!”

How to Incorporate Craft Beer into Your Big Day
F
by Diana Whelan
all weddings in New England scream a lot of things—peak foliage, s’mores bars, and one of the most recent trending themes: craft beer. “Craft beer is the new wine,” says Jennifer Brinton, owner of Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island and independent wedding planner at Grace Wedding & Events. “It’s a fun way brides and grooms can incorporate their interest or background into their wedding day.”
70 Fall 2017

Take Brian Lesniak and Sam Pelosi, for example, who tied the knot at Commander’s Mansion in Watertown, MA, last year. “Since exploring breweries was one of our favorite activities when dating, we wanted to showcase that for our guests and really make the day our own and reflective of us,” Brian says.
“For Brian and Sam, full-size growlers filled with hops and flowers were the focal point of their centerpieces.” So how’d they do it—and how can you do it, too? From growler blooms to ale-themed favors, here’s how to throw a beer-focused bash that you and your guests will never forget: Location. A brewery or local taproom is the perfect wedding destination for beer aficionados, You also have the option to incorporate this type of location at other wedding-related events, such as the bachelor or bachelorette parties or rehearsal dinner—that’s what Brian and Sam did, who hosted their rehearsal dinner at Night Shift Brewing in Everett, MA. Centerpieces. For Brian and Sam, fullsize growlers filled with hops and flowers were the focal point of their centerpieces. Not only that, each growler came from a craft brewery they visited when dating. “Guests would come up to us asking about certain breweries based on the growler that was at their table,” Brian said. “We even had one guest ask to take the centerpiece home!” Use beer in the food. Of course you’ll have beer available to drink, but you can also speak with your caterer about adding the flavors of your favorite brew into your food—from beer-braised beef to beer cheese fondue or even a beer-infused cake. (Chocolate stout cake, anyone?) “Couples are opting for a personal take on their meal since the food and drink continued on page 72 www.bridegroommag.com

is a very important element,” says Sarah Basch, owner and founder of Without A Hitch, a day-of event coordination service in Central Massachusetts. Signature drink. Forgo the Mint to Be Mojito or the Blushing Bride Bubbly and bring in your favorite craft beer. One caveat: Pay attention to state regulations. “You have to check with the rules of the venue,” advises Sarah. If the location doesn’t have their own beverage service (e.g., backyards, museums, historic homes), chances are you can bring in your own liquor. “Our ability to have control over our beer selection was one of the main deciding factors when choosing our venue,” Brian said. Tasting station. Consider bringing in a variety of your favorite beers for guests to sample, whether it’s just during cocktail hour or throughout the night. Again, this will depend on your venue and state, so be sure to ask about a tasting station ahead of time. “Venues that had a very limited selection of beer to choose from were eliminated rather quickly,” Brian said. The venue he and Sam chose was more BYOB-focused, collaborating with Gordon’s Fine Wines and Liquors in Waltham, MA, to create a perfect custom beer list. 72 Fall 2017

“Couples are giving a lot more thought into their drink menu rather than saying, ‘yeah, whatever your standard beer is,’ they really want to add their own touch,” says Jennifer. Décor. “Our cake topper was two pint glasses toasting,” Brian explained. “We also had little hand-drawn beer bottle escort cards and large copper letters to spell out BEER on the cocktail hour patio.” The couple even illuminated some growlers with copper wire LED lights and placed them around the venue to enhance the vibe. Favors. The most popular wedding favors are often edible. Perhaps your guests
would appreciate a bottle of your favorite beer as the favor. A custom wedding label affixed to the bottle will prompt just about anyone to say ”aww.” How about cookies in the shape of beer bottles? Other brewrelated favor options include bottle openers and beer glasses. Or do like Brian and Sam did and give each guest a customized beer koozie. Whichever way you pour it, you can create a singular wedding experience centered around your favorite craft brews. Diana Whelan is a freelance writer based in Northborough, MA.

Allison Tehrani and Chasen Hill wed on June 24, 2017, at the Skirvin Hotel in Downtown Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma natives wanted to keep it classy for their special day and chose the most elegant venue in the area. Together for five years, Allie and Chase had a good understanding about what they wanted their wedding day to look like. We find out how they pulled it off in this interview with the bride. B&G: How long did it take to plan your wedding? Please specify when you made certain purchases (wedding dress, venue, florist, etc.). Allison Tehrani: It took me about a year and a half to plan. We ordered my dress in January of 2016, signed the contract for the venue in February 2016, and actually, my grandmother was the florist. She is extremely talented and was able to make all the centerpieces, bouquets, and ceremony space decorations. B&G: How did you budget your wedding? How was that budget divided up into the categories listed above? AT: Honestly, that is something we probably could have done better. We planned on spending money for the wedding a little bit at a time since we had so long to plan. I think that actually made us spend more. The most was spent on the venue, dress, and photographer. Flowers were pretty expensive, too. However, since my grandma knew what she was doing, it saved a lot of money on labor. continued on page 76

B&G: What was the initial size of your wedding attendance compared to the actual? AT: We planned on having about 100 guests and there was a total of ninety-six who actually attended with dinner, and we had two wedding crashers! B&G: What sites (Pinterest, WeddingWire, The Knot) did you use to help plan and how did you use them? AT: Pinterest was my saving grace. I am not a very creative person, so if I ever had an idea, I would use Pinterest to identify the best way to do anything. I also used The Knot; it really made things much easier for our guests to RSVP and choose their entrée. B&G: How did social media influence the way you planned your wedding? For example, did you look for gowns through Instagram or find your baker or florist through Facebook? AT: Surprisingly, social media did not influence the way I planned my wedding at all. I have always known that I wanted a very classic wedding. After I picked my dress, that kind of set the mood for exactly how I wanted everything to turn out. B&G: Did one side of the family pay for the wedding? Was it split or paid for by the bride and groom? AT: The bride’s family paid for the wedding, and the groom’s family paid for the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon. B&G: How did you find inspiration? Where did your initial ideas stem from? AT: I really wanted my wedding to be something I’m proud of in fifty years. I have seen so many pictures of weddings where the colors are crazy, or the dress is extremely trendy (80s puffy sleeves), and the bride looks back on pictures and cringes at her own wedding. My goal was to love looking back, even when I’m old.

B&G: What was the first thing you booked? What was the last? AT: The first thing we booked was our venue. It is in high demand during the summer months, thus we booked a year and a half in advance. The last thing we booked was our videographer. We found out that our family in Iran would not be able to travel to the States for the wedding, so we hired a videographer to capture every moment. B&G: Which element of your wedding took highest priority and which took the lowest? AT: That’s a tough one. Practically everything was my highest priority. I would probably say the venue because it was the most expensive aspect of the wedding, and since so much money was going into it, everything about it had to be perfect. B&G: What was a must have for your wedding day? (e.g., good food, photographer, music, dress, etc.) AT: All of those things were a must have! However, I think a photographer was an absolute must have. I want to be able to look back on all my pictures and have wonderful memories of that day. B&G: When thinking about the wedding day you imagined as a little girl, how much did that actually play out on your wedding day? AT: As a little girl, I always pictured myself in a huge ball gown wedding dress and a limousine picking us up at the end. However, I did not like ball gowns on me and our whole event, including ceremony and reception, were all at a hotel. When everything was over, we stayed the night in a suite at the hotel so a limousine was not really needed.
Unlike most millennials, Allie and Chase went about planning their wedding day the “old fashioned way” but used their technology skills to find important details for the wedding such as the photographer, videographer, venue, and dress. They attended wedding expos in order to find the best deals and even won a free DJ service. Although millennials are known to be tech-savvy, they also tend to be frugal with expenses and prefer having experiences over luxury items. Allie and Chase exemplify that concept by saving money where they could and using relatives and their talents to help create a beautiful wedding day. www.bridegroommag.com

F
all in New England is the ideal time for couples to host a football-themed wedding. Whether you’re celebrating your shared passion for our unstoppable Patriots, a connection sparked by a fondness for your favorite college team, or maybe you both just happen to love the sport, we thought it would be fun to present a few delicious football-themed ideas to kick off your celebration. Toss in Some Chocolate Phillips Chocolates offers a variety of personalized chocolate favors in colorful boxes of all sizes for weddings, bridal showers, and special events. A regulationsize chocolate football made with milk chocolate is an eye-catching centerpiece that tastes good, too. Fun football pops, chocolate foil footballs, and a customized box decorated in a football motif add to the fun. Boxes can be filled with a variety of creamy milk and dark chocolates made by hand in small batches. “We work with brides all the time to create unique favors that match their vision for their wedding. Whether it’s football, baseball, or a more traditional approach, we are happy to deliver attractive and delicious favors that will delight the bridal party, family, and guests,” says co-owner Mary Ann Nagle.

“Whether you serve a football cake to honor the groom’s affinity for football or fill boxes with small batches of chocolate footballs to celebrate your shared love of the sport, we hope these treats score a touchdown when you get hitched.” Strawberry Field Favorite Delicious and decorated wedding strawberries add a creative touch to any wedding. Shari’s Berries has created a trio of treats that celebrate football, baseball, and basketball. Gourmet strawberries are wonderful, whimsical desserts or favors for weddings. Our strawberries are handdipped in the highest-quality chocolate and then dressed to impress sports fans. The hand-dipped and decorated strawberries are a nice treat for the table or a dessert buffet. continued on page 80 www.bridegroommag.com

Let Them Eat Football Fantasy Cake “What baker wouldn’t love to create football confections coming from Boston? Crafting custom cakes and cupcakes for a football-themed wedding combines two of our favorite things: weddings and celebrating Boston sports team. Couples can create a custom cake by using a sports team logo, football, or their own interpretation of the game,” says owner Kelly Delaney. Whether you serve a football cake to honor the groom’s affinity for football or fill boxes with small batches of chocolate footballs to celebrate your shared love of the sport, we hope these treats score a touchdown when you get hitched.

Wedding Gifts Turn to Local Artisans by Stacey Marcus

L ooking for a wonderful wedding gift? Why not help the local economy, show
the planet some love, and support neighboring artisans by selecting a gift that was made in America and crafted here in New England? We curated a great assortment of handcrafted wedding gifts that are straight from the heart. Simon Pearce has been creating timeless glass and pottery designs in the United States since 1980; whether it’s dinnerware, barware, or home accents, Pearce’s full range of beautiful handcrafted products will help you make your house a home.“I enjoyed going to small antique shops and weekend fleamarkets to look for old Georgian glass—glass that was blown and made by hand in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I started collecting it, wanting to learn more about it and how to make glass like it. It was the simplicity and individuality of old glass and the difference between it and what was being made commercially at the time that I found fascinating. In comparison to massproduced glass, old glass—handmade and finished one piece at a time by a craftsman rather than a machine—seemed to have character and uniqueness,” says Simon Pearce. “We frequently mix some of Simon’s earliest stemware and pottery with some of his newer designs. And we often integrate other objects made by craftsman we know personally or whose works we have collected. Our choice is to live with things that have connections to the individuals who made them; they bring life and stories to our table because of our appreciation for the makers, their work, and their skill,” notes Pia Pearce. Bennington Potters dinnerware and bakeware also makes a great wedding gift as it is not only functional, durable, and of good design, but it’s also safe for the dishwasher, microwave, and oven. There has never been any lead or heavy metals in the clay or glazes and these products, which, for sixty-nine years, have been made in Bennington, Vermont, USA. Whether you choose to purchase a set of dinnerware, nesting bowls, or tableware accessories, Bennington Potters’ extensive collection allows you to customize a gift for the wedding couple.

“I love giving one of our large bowls with a glass microwave popcorn popper that is produced right across the street at Catamount Glass,” says Archer Dunn. Catherine Cane of Brookside Quiltworks in the Berkshires remarks that handmade quilts are the quintessential wedding gift, noting that a woman’s eligibility used to be equated with how many quilts she crafted for her hope chest. (I would definitely have been a spinster.) While some couples commission Cane to create a bespoke quilt for their wedding, wedding guests also have custom quilts created for the couple. She notes that a couple from the Lakota American Indian tribe created their own quilt, which they used in their ceremony as part of the ritual to be wrapped in a quilt. “Mobiles are a joyful art form that symbolize a unique expression of cooperation and balance all marriages need. Each armature of a mobile is dependent on the next one to successfully survive within the relationship and family structure,” says Joel Hotchkiss from Hotchkiss Mobiles Gallery in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He notes that the Nesting Birds mobile represents the beginning of relationships, while the Toast and Champagne mobile depicts a couple celebrating their love.
A sweet way to celebrate launching a life together is a gift of artisan chocolates crafted right here in New England, notes Diane Edwards of Harbor Sweets, made in Salem, Massachusetts. When you purchase their gift set filled with bee-themed goodies packaged in a wooden tea tray, a percentage of each sale is donated to Pollinator Partnership to support their efforts to protect and preserve the honeybee and other pollinators critical to our food ecosystem. Or choose the lovely Salt & Ayre assortment, which comes with a stunning handblown “ocean wave” candy dish from Vermont’s Route 4 Glass. The bride and groom will surely enjoy the treats and treasure the gift. Check out these local artisans and celebrate the new couple with a gift from New England!
