Letter from the Editor
Spring is finally here! Welcome to the beginning of long, lazy days and vibrant nights. Spring also signals the beginning of the most popular time of year to get
married. For those of you getting married in May or June, you’re almost to the finish line! Those of you getting married in the summer months are really ramping up your planning by now, and for fall and winter to-be-weds, you still have lots of time to get all those details in place. If you’re newly engaged and just starting to gather ideas, congratulations and welcome! You’ve picked up the best local planning resource for all things wedding. Every issue of Bride & Groom is packed to the gills with ideas, advice, and resources for every kind of couple. As a bride-to-be back in 2012, I felt very determined to do everything myself, often politely refusing advice from well-meaning friends and relatives, and definitely ignoring bridal magazines and blogs. My fear was that I would become too overwhelmed and lose sight of my original vision. How I wish I had known how helpful those resources could have been! I wanted my wedding to be

100% uniquely me, but what I didn’t realize was that I could utilize the myriad planning resources out there without compromising my vision of a perfect wedding. This issue is chock full of articles that would have helped me immensely during my wedding planning days, and I’m confident that they will help you today! “Maids of Honor” on page 72 addresses the somewhat tricky issue of choosing a wedding party, while “One the Menu” (page 76) has some really great advice for crafting a scrumptious reception menu. “Make it POP!” (page 34) is full of tips on using fabric and texture in your wedding-scape to add uniqueness and save your budget. Don’t think I’d leave you without some eye candy, though. Feast your eyes on some delectable wedding desserts crafted by local bakers on page 70, and oogle photos from real New England summer weddings on page 54. And don’t miss our indispensible spring bridal makeup tips on page 42. As always, make sure your check out Nearby Nuptials on pages 22, 26, and 30 for inspiration from real New England couples. a:
My biggest thing with photography is keeping it simple and being honest. Photographers can do a lot of dramatic lighting or heavy post-processing. I like to capture the moments of the day; the emotions. In one word: natural. I taught myself over time and that’s how I’ve always leaned—keeping it natural.
q:
How has your style evolved over the years and how do you adapt to new trends?
a:
I’ve lightened up over the years, both literally and figuratively. I have changed and grown in different ways, but it’s been organic. Trends really are trends: they come and go; they’re different every year. Right now, Pinterest is so instrumental in planning a wedding. I am seeing people loving natural décor, burlap, rustic backdrops, photos taken in the outdoors and in fields. That’s where I love to be and I love to shoot, so for me, I’ll take it!
“I like to capture the moments of the day; the emotions. In one word: natural.”
q:
Choosing a photographer for your wedding shouldn’t be taken lightly. What steps can couples take to find the right fit?
a:
Look for a photographer you are comfortable with personality-wise. The art is a major factor, but as a bride and groom, you will be spending an exorbitant amount of time with your photographer. Ask questions and see how they respond to you. Make sure you like their art and like their style. Also, ask to see full wedding albums or a complete online gallery. I am a “fly on the wall” photographer. The last thing they want to do is spend the day talking to me. They want to be focused on spending time with guests that are there. I shoot photojournalistic style—I wouldn’t be a good fit for someone looking for a very traditional, “every single photo is posed” photographer. Finding a photographer is a very personal decision and I think people should trust their gut. Ask a lot of questions and if is not quite clicking, it’s okay to look for others.
In your opinion, what percentage of a couple’s budget should be dedicated to photography?
a:
It’s all about priorities. If photography is a big priority, they should carve out a decent amount. Flowers will be beautiful on the wedding day but if you don’t have lasting images . . . I think anyone on a budget can usually find a photographer that can work within that budget, but it might just be a smaller package. I always say, “Picture what you want to have five years after your wedding.” A lot of focus is on the wedding, and that’s normal, but there’s going to be a day after—and a day after that. It’s about prioritizing.
My packages start with five hours of coverage, always a second photographer, and an engagement session because I love to get to know my clients before the wedding day. I also include the edited collection of gallery images with every wedding. Andrea E. McHugh is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™ Magazine and writes from Newport, RI.

Crystal and Adam
August 9, 2013 – Natick, MA Their Story Adam Marshall was on a lifelong quest for his “little spoon” when he was introduced to Crystal MacKenzie by a mutual friend. “Adam and I exchanged a few e-mails to get to know each other, then decided to meet for a drink,” says Crystal. “We had a great conversation that night, I drove Adam to his car since he parked kind of far away, and before he got out, I accidentally locked him in, so he gave me a sweet good night kiss!” Adam was obviously smitten. He made his feelings for Crystal even clearer when he asked her out on a second date. “Adam texted me, ‘so what movie does my future wife want to see?’ . . . I guess you could say that it was very early on that we knew we had something special.” Adam’s proposal came as a welcome surprise to Crystal. What started as an average night at home quickly turned into an intimate and romantic event.

“Every night it’s a guarantee that I fall asleep on the couch watching TV, Adam always scoops me up off the couch and throws me in bed (literally!),” says Crystal. “[On the night of the proposal] he came home kind of late and when he saw me, he gave me a kiss . . . that’s when I noticed that he smelled like beer . . . he said it was from a late lunch with the guys at work.” Despite her suspicions, Crystal quickly fell back asleep. “When it was time for me to go to bed, Adam scooped me up in his arms and carried me down the hall. I had to brush my teeth, so he let me down and opened my bathroom door for me . . . to my surprise when I opened my eyes and looked up I saw roses and candles and looked at the mirror where he wrote ‘WILL YOU MARRY ME?’ on the mirror . . . Of course I said YES!” And the beer breath? “Come to find out, he was out with my dad for dinner and drinks earlier that night to ask for his blessing.” continued on page 24

Planning & Details
Advice
Crystal and Adam’s positive, team approach to planning made the ten months it took to orchestrate their wedding a virtual breeze. “We loved planning our wedding, because of all of the excitement and anticipation” Crystal gushes. Trendy meets classy was the order of the day for their summer affair at the Verve Hotel in Natick, Massachusetts. “Our theme was black, white, and bling,” says Crystal. “I absolutely love bling, so that was a must.” Chairs swathed in white spandex covers and black spandex sashes set the foundation for the theme, and sparkly bow accents took things up a notch to level “bling.” To add a sweet touch of class, the couple offered Lindt white chocolate truffles in bags tied with a black bow. Guests definitely appreciated Crystal and Adam’s efforts: “Our guests raved about our food, cake, and photo booth,” Crystal says.
Like many couples, Crystal and Adam placed a lot of importance on preserving the memories of their wedding day, so it’s no surprise that their main piece of advice encourages engaged couples to do the same. “Hire a cinematographer!” says Crystal “It’s definitely worth the investment. It’s a keepsake that we will treasure forever.”

Michele and Brandon September 21, 2013 – Leicester, MA Their Story Michele Leary and Brandon Jones began as a lot of sweethearts do: as co-workers. “We worked at the same company in different departments for a couple years before we started flirting, which eventually led to our first date on Christmas night in 2009.” says Michele. While this couple’s beginning was pretty typical, their dating relationship was anything but. Michele has been battling colon cancer since 2007; a cancer so aggressive that she has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as many invasive surgeries. She will likely have to endure treatment off and on for the rest of her life. Through it all, Brandon has stayed by Michele’s side. “I am so thankful to have met the love of my life who is always by my side,” she says. “He’s always going above and beyond for me . . . He takes care of me when I’m sick, and takes me out to enjoy life every moment that we can. I am truly blessed.”

The two got engaged on Christmas morning in 2011 over coffee—and cuddles—on the couch. “Brandon started expressing his love for me, told me he wanted to spend his life with me, pulled a ring box out of his pocket, and asked me to marry him,” says Michele. “I was totally surprised and of course I accepted.”
“I am so thankful to have met the love of my life who is always by my side.” Details The planning of Michele and Brandon’s big day took about a year and a half, and they wanted to make sure they could get married during New England’s glorious fall season. “We wanted to have an outdoor ceremony, so we decided September would be perfect—still warm enough but not too hot. Also, we wanted to have some of the beautiful New England fall colors in the background.” The two decided on the Leicester Country Club as the perfect spot to enjoy the picturesque Central Massachusetts landscape. While Michele and Brandon very much enjoyed planning their wedding, they found the costs to be nearly prohibitive, due mainly to the high costs of Michele’s medical care. Generously, Michele’s cousin stepped up to the plate and helped seek out vendors who continued on page 28 www.bridegroommag.com

would be willing to donate their services to this special couple. In the end, Michele and Brandon’s story attracted the attention of BugaBoo Confections, Wakeen Photography, Creative Papers, Ltd., DJ Kevin Whitney, Seed To Stem Botanicals, and Jeffrey Robert Salon—all of whom donated their services free of charge. A theme wasn’t on the agenda for Michele and Brandon, who wanted to focus solely on their feelings for each other. “We didn’t have
a theme . . . it was just about the celebration of our love,” says Michele. “The bridesmaids and I did make blue ribbon pins for all the guests. The blue ribbon is the symbol for Colon Cancer. In lieu of favors we made a donation to the American Cancer Society.”
Advice “My advice for new bride and grooms to be would be to set up an e-mail address for wedding planning only,” says Michele.
“That way, once the wedding is over, your email box won’t be flooded with all the e-mail lists you joined while planning the wedding that you will no longer need. I wish I had done that.”

Diana and Nicholas
October 6, 2013 – Groton, MA Their Story Diana Williams was not shy at all when it came to expressing her interest in her college sweetheart and future husband, Nicholas Riggieri. “He was walking with one of my friends. He caught my eye so I beeped and waved and made some really embarrassing hand gesture and stuck out my tongue,” says Diana. “What can I say? He was hooked!” The happy couple got engaged in 2008, prior to Nicholas’s military deployment to Afghanistan. “We had pre-deployment briefings that we traveled to Vermont for,” Diana says. “When we got home that night Nicholas popped the question, in his own style, of course—we were both in PJs exhausted. I wish I was better dressed, but my rubber ducky shorts and hair in a messy bun was going to have to do. We ran down stairs to share the exciting news with my parents and my mom popped Champagne.” So intense was Diana’s excitement that she actually lost consciousness: “I got up to get something to eat and fainted! I was so excited that I passed out! [Nicholas] wondered how I was ever going to make through our wedding day!”

BRIDE&GROOM

Planning Diana and Nicholas took things slow when is came to planning their wedding. With a military deployment on the horizon and college degrees to finish, they felt that there was no need to rush the process. “Nicholas and I had been engaged for four years, but did not start our planning process until August of 2012,” says Diana. “We planned the wedding for thirteen months.”
“I was so excited that I passed out!” For Diana, planning the wedding wasn’t the walk in the park most brides hope for. “Honestly, the wedding planning process was stressful at times, especially when it came to the financial part . . . It is so easy to get sucked into the must-have wedding expenses and it’s easy to lose sight of what it’s all about,” says Diana. “Luckily, [Nicholas and I] both come from very loving and generous families who wanted to give us an unforgettable wedding day, which is exactly what we had.”
Details A cozy, intimate wedding was what Diana and Nicholas hoped for, but being from two very large families, the couple had to set their sights on a larger venue. Luckily, they continued on page 32

found their perfect space at the Barn at Gibbet Hill in Groton, MA. “The Barn gave us enough room to hold all of our 143 guests with a cozy, warm, and romantic feeling,” says Diana. “We had dimmed lights, candles everywhere, mercury glass vases with white hydrangeas as centerpieces and scattered everywhere. Very classic, rustic, and romantic—truly everything we wanted it to be.” Aside from the bride and groom, the food was the star of the evening. An impressive array of courses dotted the reception, and included such delectable dishes as Guinnessbraised short ribs, butternut squash ravioli, and prosciutto-stuffed chicken. “Everything was amazing and everyone is still raving about the food!” says Diana. Personal touches added to the overall appeal of the evening. In lieu of favors, the couple offered traditional Italian confetti (candy-covered almonds), which were tucked inside beautiful lace pouches decorated by Diana’s mother and aunt. “Attached was a small note card stating that we made a generous donation to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute,” says Diana. Diana made the programs herself, which were printed on shimmery paper and accent-

ed with leaf-shaped cutouts. The bottom of each program read, “The autumn leaves are falling, but love is in bloom.” On the back of the programs the couple listed the names of friends and relatives who had passed on. “It was important for Nicholas and I to take a moment and remember those who could not join us on our wedding day,” says Diana. “It said, ‘We know you would be here today, if Heaven wasn’t so far away . . . You are here in spirit and will live forever in our hearts.’”
Advice “Naturally, weddings can be incredibly overwhelming for the bride and groom,” says Diana, “so Nicholas and I went into our bridal suite after we had dinner and right before cake was served. We took a moment and absorbed the day, we ordered a drink, and listened to the dancing upstairs—it was everyone we loved in one room for us, we could not have asked for more . . . I would highly recommend this to any bride and groom. It’s so hard to absorb the day when you are constantly being pulled in every direction. Take a moment and relax with your husband/wife and enjoy it. Just soak it all in.”

MAKE IT POP! Bring your wedding design to life with fabric and texture. by Emily McCord

ngaged couples must make so many choices before their wedding. Decisions about dates, colors, styles, photographers, food, timing, and music can seem endless as they sift through all of the available options to mold their big day. Busy couples often only quickly consider—or neglect to consider at all—the many fabric and texture options available to them. “I think many brides aren’t aware of the multitude of choices out there,” says Elizabeth Dunderdale, owner, planner, and designer at Boston-based Gracie Lou Events. “As a result, they overlook the potential visual and stylistic impact that fabrics and texture can have on their wedding.” However, most couples would be surprised by how much the thoughtful selection of fabric and texture can define a memorable and unique style for their wedding. “Fabric and texture can really work together to bring the level of style in your reception space up a notch,” says Dunderdale. Couples might also be surprised to learn that fabrics—while creating striking visuals—can be surprisingly inexpensive. “Using fabrics and textures can be a very costeffective way to get a high-design look,”

says Sarah Daly, president and lead planner of Sarah Daly Events in Wakefield, Rhode Island. “Even a small amount of ribbon can take you a long way in achieving your desired design.” So here are just a few of the beautiful benefits that await couples who carefully consider the textures and fabrics used on their wedding day.
Originality Tastefully chosen fabrics and textures can create a completely unique look, and the myriad of choices available almost guarantees that one fabric palette will be unlike any other. “All good design combines layers of elements—color, texture, pattern, and shine—in order to create visual interest,” says Daly. “The choices you make can also steer the overall atmosphere—a bold graphic can feel modern and fresh, or a simple navy-and-white stripe can feel classic and timeless.” While layers of elements can do a lot to bring a unique ambiance to your event, it’s important keep in mind that quality trumps quantity. “The one rule you shouldn’t break?” says Daly, “Using too many patterns.”

in unusual ways: get some patterned papers and use them to line trays for passed hors d’oeuvres,” suggests Daly. Linens are another place where couples can infuse sophisticated detail into their wedding. “Upgraded linens allow your flowers and table settings to stand out while remaining cohesive,” Dunderdale says. “They are a great channel through [which] the bride’s vision can be brought to life.” continued on page 36

Details that Pop Fabric is used in so many places on the wedding day—in the wedding party attire, on the tables, in the flower arrangements. In the scramble to plan a wedding, it is easy to let tiny details go unnoticed. A Signature Style Attention to the interplay of fabric and texture can help create the magical style of the couple’s dreams without breaking the bank. Tasteful reliance on inexpensive fabrics—like burlap or unrefined linen—or unique, less traditional colors or textures can create a truly individual look while helping couples stay within the confines of their budget. When creating your signature design style, remember that risks and “rule-breaking” can sometimes payoff. For example,
says Duderdale, “Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. Gold and silver can look stunning together.” Using fabric and texture to add unique touches to a wedding might seem like a daunting task to anyone without a background in textiles or design. Fabric 101: Three Tips for Getting Started with Fabric and Texture 1. Pick a theme. It can be any theme—quirky modern, classic vintage, formal elegance, steampunk, etc. A theme will help streamline your fabric and texture choices and help you create a cohesive look. 2. Allow two or three focal points to guide the choices. For instance, an off-white dress and tweed suits could create a simple, carefree tone, while very smooth fabrics formalize a room. leslieboudreau.com elizabethannsbridal.com flowerstopofworcester.com

3. Be bold. Don’t be afraid to use a particular fabric or texture simply because you haven’t seen it used before. It’s difficult to stray into dangerous territory with classic fabrics and neutral shades. Follow your senses, pair fabrics that you like, and enlist one person (or a very select few, like your mother and a best friend) whose taste you trust to help make selections.

lake provides the perfect dreamy backdrop for a wedding—at once softening and intensifying the surroundings in a glimmering and ever-changing ballet of color. Equally important, a number of lakeside venues cater to weddings with well thought-out sites and experienced planners to help bring each couple’s dream wedding to life. And for those who want to extend the celebration, some venues offer accommodations as well as a full array of activities, from lakeside barbecues to canoe races. Best of all, for New England couples, some of the world’s most stunning and accommodating waterside settings are located practically in their own backyards. Here are three inspiring lakeside venues that would be worth flying to if they weren’t so close to home!

Interlaken Inn, Lakeville, Connecticut
Specializing in destination weddings with 100 to 220 guests, Interlaken Inn nestles into thirty beautifully-landscaped acres. “We have canoes and kayaks on the lake, as well as a pool, tennis, basketball, volleyball, a full-service spa, and a great on-site restaurant, so there’s plenty to keep everyone busy,” says Brandon Scimeca, food and beverage director. The inn never accepts more than one wedding a weekend, so it’s like having your own compound for the whole event. Many couples pull guests together for a New England clambake or barbecue, a bonfire by the lake with s’mores and hot cocoa, or a farewell breakfast. “Some [couples] add optional activities such as yoga, hiking,
cocktails served poolside, or games like ultimate Frisbee,” says Scimeca. “Plus, our fulltime planner, Stephanie Holst-Grubbe, keeps things on track so our wedding couples can relax and enjoy their guests.” Kimberly and Josh Francis of Bridgewater, Connecticut visited Interlaken Inn thinking it would just provide accommodations for their 175 guests. “We saw our wedding as a chance for our extended family and friends to get to know each other and wanted a place with a country home feeling that could fit all our guests,” says Kimberly. The couple was delighted to learn that the inn also hosts weddings and is well known for its spectacular food. “The more we explored the property, the more we loved it,” Josh says. The couple loved that their guests could walk from the wedding to their rooms, so they encouraged everyone to make a weekend of it. “We’ve been to a lot of weddings, and it can feel rushed,” says Josh. “We wanted our guests to enjoy it as much as we did. And even though it was only about an hour from where we and many of our guests lived, 90 percent stayed over.”
Migis Lodge, South Casco, Maine Located along 3,500 feet of waterfront at Sebago Lake in southern Main, Migis Lodge accommodates up to 130 guests in thirty-five cottages and six lodge rooms. These lovely accommodations are all tucked into ethereal pine forest and are outfitted with fieldstone fireplaces, handmade quilts, and fine linens. “Weddings here can be very sophisticated, yet Migis has a rustic charm, so there’s a relaxed feeling,” says Robyn Hammond-Sala, onsite wedding planner. Wedding celebrations at Migis typically kick off with a lakeside lobster bake and bonfire, and end with a breakfast at Lookout Point. Ceremonies can be held in several different locations throughout the property, but most are held on the waterfront to take advantage of the gorgeous lake views. Weekend activities range from kayaking, canoeing, and sailing, to tennis, hiking, and enjoying the wood-fired sauna. There’s also a winery and gift shop at the end of the street. “Some couples organize canoe races and Ping-Pong or shuffleboard tournaments,” says HammondSala, “but since wedding guests are the only ones on property, even without planned activities, people can’t help but have fun and get to know each other.” One of the best things about a wedding at Migis Lodge is that there’s little need for a wedding planner. “Just relax and enjoy yourself and let us do what we do,” Hammond-Sala

advises. That’s not to say that weddings are cookie-cutter, though. “We collaborate on everything from menus to special touches. For example, some brides arrive by boat with their bridesmaids, and then after the ceremony, leave with the groom with a ‘just married’ sign on the boat.” Christine Heitz and Kevin McKenney of Epping, New Hampshire were looking for a place reminiscent of the summer camp where they met, but they didn’t want their guests sleeping in bunk beds or hiking across

a sprawling campus to get to the ceremony. “We hadn’t even gotten out of the car when we knew Migis Lodge was the place,” says Christine. There was one hitch, however: The next open wedding date was almost two years away. Fortuitously, a cancelation opened up a date just three months out, so Christine and Kevin decided to scramble and make it work. “It was really easy. [The staff] arranged everything seamlessly so we didn’t have to deal with multiple vendors, Christine says. Exchanging their vows on a lawn just ten feet from the lake was beautiful, and the whole weekend was “unbelievable,” says Christine. “The best part was having our friends and family get to know each other over a full weekend.” Among the couple’s favorite memories from their weekend celebration were the bonfire celebrations. “Migis Lodge set [bonfires] up after the Friday barbecue and after our reception on Saturday night and we set out a canoe filled with drinks—they let us bring our own, which saved us a lot of money,” says Christine. “It was so fun to have everyone we loved in one place, hanging out, dancing, and having fun.”

Crystal Lake Golf Club, Mapleville, Rhode Island Imagine a grand entrance before your assembled guests in a whitewall-tired car, horse-drawn carriage, or even a pontoon boat; then a ceremony against the stunningly blue backdrop of a sparkling lake. This is the charm of Crystal Lake Golf Club. “It’s a country setting with very scenic views of the lake,” says wedding coordinator Tracy Hill. “It’s a beautiful place to get married.”
The 23,000-square-foot facility, which opened in May 2004, can accommodate up to 200 guests and offers several graceful settings for your ceremony, reception, and other pre- and post-wedding festivities. Ceremonies are typically held beneath a gazebo surrounded by wooden benches and overlooking the 70-acre Crystal Lake. The patio of the Waterfront Room—with its sweeping views of the lake below—is another popular spot to say, “I do.” Guests begin their post-ceremony celebrations in a newly constructed cocktail room with a bar, vaulted ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and high-top tables, followed by dinner and dancing in the Waterfront Room. A handcrafted bar, detailed woodworking, cathedral ceilings, and a central dance floor make guests feel warm and welcomed. “You almost feel like you’re inside somebody’s house,” says Hill. Naturally, the lakefront setting of the Crystal Lake Golf Club provides numerous backdrops for great photos. Photographers can capture your wedded bliss in waterside nooks, out on the dock or the patio, in front of or inside the antique cars or pontoon boat, and out on the pristine green. In certain cases, Hill says, couples can have limited use of a golf cart to go out on the course and “get that special picture.” Crystal Lake offers an assortment of mouth-watering hot and cold hors d’oeuvres for cocktail hour, and for the reception, couples can choose between a three-course banquet menu and a buffet menu. The club is best known for its prime rib, which Hill says is “quite popular” with weddings, while the baked stuffed haddock is “simply delicious.” Overall, couples, their families, and guests who experience a wedding at Crystal Lake “love the customer service,” says Hill.
“My staff is awesome—they go above and beyond to make things comfortable and be accommodating.” Because she spends so much time with brides—from the very first tasting to the last moments of the reception—Hill happily admits “a lot of them become my friends.” And along with the gorgeous setting and outstanding service, Crystal Lake is an affordable choice. “We’re priced very reasonably for what you get; you get great service and it’s not going to break the bank.”

Fresh-Faced & Fancy-Free Trends in spring bridal makeup by Jennafyr Giuffrida
S
pring is finally sprung, marking the beginning of everyone’s favorite time of year: Wedding season! From now through August, everyone and their grandmas will have their weekends booked up with wedding celebrations, the most important of which is yours. As you hurtle through the last few months of planning and the small details come together, it’s important to consider the final elements of your bridal look. Hopefully by now you’ve chosen a makeup artist and booked a trial run. If you haven’t, just know that in wedding time it’s never too soon to do anything.
A Clean Canvas As any makeup artist will agree, a beautiful bridal look begins with flawless skin. “We always recommend our brides visit a licensed esthetician six weeks prior to their big day,” says Heather Cohen, manager of b. Luxe Hair and Makeup Studio in Medway and I Do On-site Hair and Face. “We strongly recommend a gentle exfoliation treatment three days prior to your wedding; we love Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Double Detox Exfoliating Facial Mask (tartecosmetics.com). It’s time to put away the heavy shadows and foundations of winter with the coats and mittens, and bring out the florals and berries! the soft cleansing power of Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser (us.caudalie.com) and a moisturizer sans SPF, such as Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar (philosophy.com).” For at-home maintenance, Jennifer Pitts of Makeup by Jenn Pitts in Worcester reiterates the importance of regular exfoliating and moisturizing. “I love face masks,” she says, “Freeman has a variety of different face masks for hydrating, purifying, exfoliating, and polishing. I personally love the Charcoal and Black Sugar polishing mask, and their Cucumber Facial peel-off mask (freemanbeauty.com). Glam Glow (glamglowmud.com) is also a great product for exfoliating and rejuvenating your skin. It is a mud mask that works beautifully.” While all of this may sound like a lot—and like anything wedding-related, expensive— investing in a skin-care routine for your wedding is a great way to kick-start a daily regimen. Healthy skin is beautiful skin, and forming good habits now will ensure youngerlooking skin for years to come.
Trending Spring This season is all about freshlooking skin and pops of color. “It’s time to put away the heavy shadows and foundations of winter with the coats and mittens, and bring out the florals and berries!” says Cohen. “Lavender and orchid are the big colors for this spring. When putting together a bridal look we typically choose one area to enhance; this year a berry lip with a nude eye and full, lush lashes is right on trend and photographs beautifully.” To achieve this look, Cohen recommends db Cosmetics’ “Limitless” cream blush over a coat of Temptu airbrush foundation (temptu.com), finished off with Benefit’s “Posietint” for a kiss-proof smile (benefitcosmetics.com). Another tip is to use a white eyeliner or highcontinued on page 44 www.bridegroommag.com

lighter in the inner corners of your eyes for added drama and sparkle. “Some trends I have noticed are a natural face and ‘popping’ eyes,” says Pitts. “I think this is a timeless look for weddings. Brides don’t want to look like they are wearing too much makeup; they want to look like themselves—but they want their eyes to pop!” Pitts recommends creating a subtle, smoky eye using neutral colors; full, naturallooking false lashes; and a nude lip to top off the look.
“I’m also loving highlighters!” says Pitts. “They aren’t new but I love them. They add a nice glow to your face that makes you stand out. For a cream highlighter I like ‘Watts Up’ by Benefit (benefitcosmetics.com), and for powders I am currently using ‘Tiki’ from Hard Candy (hardcandy.com) and ‘Light Glow’ from Ruby Kisses (rubykissescosmetics.com).”
Ageless Beauty Some brides may find the idea of airbrushing unnecessary, but Cohen makes an excellent
point about this method of makeup application: “It’s like pantyhose for your face,” she says. “It gently covers and conceals imperfections while still allowing your skin to shine through! It gives you that ‘no makeup’ look—just great skin that lasts and lasts!” According to Pitts, preparation and forethought are key to building the perfect wedding-day look: “Make sure you get a trial run with your makeup artist so that you know what to expect,” she says. She also advises brides with a typically minimalist makeup routine to be careful when trying a dramatic look: “If you are not used to wearing makeup don’t request anything too dramatic like a smoky eye—chances are you won’t like it.” Cohen recommends that when choosing your makeup artist you should look for someone who specializes in photographic makeup. Not only will the right professional know how to create a look that will show up beautifully on film, but you can also avoid wearing a look that’s too trendy. You shouldn’t be able to tell what year you got married in just by looking at your makeup. Jennafyr Giuffrida is a freelance writer and a stylist at Nordstrom. She writes from Attleboro, MA.

Flying Solo
Planning and paying for a wedding on your own. by Cindy Papish Gerber
s a regular writer for Boston.com under Expertly Engaged,
Angel Harris Babbitt cheerfully dispenses advice to her “bridal besties” on every aspect of wedding planning. But while chronicling her own journey down the aisle, Angel learned that she and her husband Chris were part of the 42% of Americans living in the Northeast paying for their own wedding. “Shortly after we got engaged,” she wrote, “we had the inevitable money talk. It was during that conversation that we decided our wedding would be financed with our own money, on our own terms.” Angel and Chris promptly opened a joint savings account and started setting money aside. And although their parents contributed towards her gown and the reception, Angel says, “I didn’t feel comfortable asking my family to pay for the wedding.” Chris Harris and Angel Harris Babbitt.

Barbara Swanson, a non-denominational reverend and wedding officiant with Say I Do by Barbara, has noticed that the traditional rules delineating how much the bride’s parents should spring for (most) and what the groom’s parents should cover (the rest) no longer apply. “I believe that young couples, who are older, better educated, and making a good income are contributing more than ever to their weddings,” she says. Conversely, their parents may be unemployed, saving for their retirement, or on a fixed income. Faced with this exact family circumstance, Amanda Greene and Nicholas Paulsen have decided to foot the bill for their upcoming wedding in Plainville, Massachusetts. Additionally, says Amanda, “This is my second marriage; we have a fifteen-month-old daughter who goes to daycare while we both work full time. It was more important to have a nice day and not break the bank.” Throughout their planning process, Amanda was delighted to discover that, “Trying to find ways to cut back and make our cashonly wedding possible has been fun.” Visiting bridal expos, doing research, and consulting Pinterest for creative ideas allowed them “to become better at saving,” adds Nick. Negotiating with vendors, who “were able to work with us on different prices helped us stick to our budget.”
“To know we were able to put together a wedding on our own made it all worth it.” Flying solo may prompt a shift in focus away from the reception bills (and frills) and towards the impact of the ceremony. “Regardless of how much is spent,” suggests Swanson, “a small, meaningful wedding” can be just as beautiful as a grand affair. “Barbara was totally on board with our idea, which was a ‘surprise’ April Fools wedding for fifteen guests,” says Brookelyn Carta, who held her surprise wedding at the Matunuck Oyster Bar in Rhode Island. “For my husband, Steve Skultety, this was his second marriage. We didn’t really want a big wedding that my parents, or ourselves would be paying off. After considering several options, we came up with something fun, casual, and easy for everybody.” Their plan? “We didn’t tell anyone and surprised them by getting engaged, and then married by Barbara, who brought along her sister to videotape the whole thing,” says Brookelyn. “It was so exciting!” Impressively, Brookelyn and Steve planned their wedding in just six weeks. “My advice for couples who are planning and/or paying for their own wedding is to prioritize,” says photographer Leslie Boudreau. “Think past the party and try to decide what will be most important to you after the wedding is over. This is a day to celebrate and you get to follow your own rules.” Knowing when to accept or deny any outside help can be tricky. “When planning my own wedding, the biggest thing my parents
tried to influence was the guest list,” recalls Martine BoursiquotLaConte, owner and founder of This Modern Love Events in Southern Connecticut. “There were so many people they wanted to invite, but increasing the guest list was what had a direct impact on the budget (which we were mostly paying for ourselves). My husband and I envisioned our wedding as an intimate gathering.” In order to minimize any major drama, Martine feels it is vital to gently set guidelines for both sets of parents. “While we appreciated outside opinions, we wanted it to be ‘our’ wedding. The only way to ensure that was to pay for it ourselves,” says Meagan Stevens, about her August 31, 2013 wedding to Matthew Sussman held in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Throughout their engagement, Matthew felt “a bit overwhelmed by suggestions of where, how, and when we should have our wedding. we decided that the best approach was to decline offers/suggestions across the board and have a wedding that was based on what the two of us wanted.” “Not only is it difficult to please everyone but it also causes a lot of stress”, says Meagan. Once their parents respectfully relinquished control, the pressures and tensions that often accompany key decisions suddenly vanished. Nonetheless, Matthew remembers coming across “advantages and disadvantages at every turn.” Remaining cost-conscious, their decision to dip into their savings “was something we were hesitant to do initially,” he acknowledges. On the plus side, Meagan loved the fact that “we were in charge . . . in complete control of everything. Afterwards, we were so proud of ourselves. Live-streaming your big day.
O
by Connie Jeske Crane
ne of the most truly disheartening moments for any couple is finding out a loved one can’t make it to their wedding. But whether it’s a groomsman who’s being deployed overseas or a housebound gran, technology can ease the sting of separation. When Joanna Trainor Duka and Mentar Duka were planning their October, 2012 Boston wedding, they realized that many family members wouldn’t be able to attend. Ultimately, they decided to live stream their nuptials to some of Mentar’s family in Albania, and also to some of Joanna’s relatives in Michigan and Hawaii. Afterwards, the couple received lots of positive feedback. “The live stream was really fun,” says Joanna. For example, she says her mother’s 83-yearold cousin in Hawaii “just had a grand old time. She got up on Saturday morning, went to her computer and just watched our wedding.”

The club also hosted a wedding last summer where the best man—the groom’s twin brother—was serving with the military in Afghanistan, and technology helped reach across the miles via a live feed. “It was kind of funny,” says Violette, “they had a cutout of the groom’s brother—a life-sized cutout that they used for the ceremony.” The best man not only saw the ceremony via live feed, Violette says the groom’s brother was also able to “Skype in and do the toast” via a computer that was hooked up to a large television behind the head table. “These brothers are very close,” says Violette, “so to get him to be able to see the whole thing and to ‘be there’, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the place.” With theses kinds of results, it’s not surprising that media outlets like the New York Times are noting the popularity of live-streamed weddings. But is live streaming right for you? Like the Dukas, you may feel it’s a little over the top. As the couple noted on their wedding website, “Yes, yes . . . we know it sounds crazy . . . but thanks to the wonders of technology, no one has to miss the day!” Ready to consider live streaming? Here are a few things you’ll want to look into:
Internet Connection For it all to work, you’ll need a broadband Internet connection at your ceremony and reception site. “To produce the highest quality results possible, we recommend couples use a hardline Ethernet connection,” says Max Haot, CEO and co-founder of Livestream, a New York-based event broadcasting company. “The second best option would be WIFI, followed by 4G [wireless modem] with a strong signal available.” continued on page 60

Let’s face it, you can send live images to loved ones just by holding a cell phone in the air or Skyping with your laptop. But if you want to avoid “freezing and some locking up,” and increase sound quality, Ken Cosco of A Touch Of Class DJs in Marlborough, Massachusetts recommends full high-definition (HD) video streaming. “It’s quality on a completely different level,” says Cosco. There are a few different ways you can go with HD. Cosco opts for the Livestream application, plus a Teradek Cube (which broadcasts live video directly to the Web) mounted directly on his video camera. Livestream’s Broadcaster addon performs a similar function, says Haot. In addition to HD video-streaming service providers like Livestream or Ustream, you might also want to check out wedding-oriented service providers such as I Do Stream, or My Streaming Wedding. Finally, you could interview local service providers like Cosco to search for someone with live streaming experience.
Cost vs. Quality Not surprisingly, the higher the quality and level of service you want, the higher the cost. Using Skype costs next to nothing. For DIY enthusi-
asts who want higher quality video, I Do Stream packages start from as little as $200 to connect your camcorder to their streaming equipment, and from $595 with equipment rental included. Meanwhile, a package from My Streaming Wedding, where they handle all aspects of your broadcast, starts at $1,000. For live streaming service, Cosco says A Touch of Class charges $999 for up to seven hours of live streaming.

Extras
Built on the shores of beautiful Crystal Lake, the club offers wonderful views of our golf course & lake.
Extras that companies and providers offer vary, so ask about: • e-vites for live stream guests • a webpage where guests can sign in and view your wedding • live technical support • live viewer comments capability • password protection • an on-demand viewing period • how many online guests can view the video simultaneously • video viewing on multiple devices • sample wedding videos so you can see what the end product looks like. Ultimately, you need to clarify what’s important to you. Do you want all the bells and whistles? Do you need a low-cost solution? Or, do you want nothing more than to hand all the geeky details over to someone else’s capable hands? Whatever you decide, Cosco adds, don’t give this job to a newbie. You don’t want any glitches with an event like a wedding. “We would recommend going with a company that is established, knows how to do it, and basically has worked out all the bugs.” Connie Jeske Crane is a full-time freelance writer and reports frequently on weddings, parenting, sustainability and social media. The hilly locale makes for stunning views, something that no doubt appealed to the founders, who opened the country club in 1896. An elegant New England flair permeates the grounds, with the covered bridge at the 17th hole being a wedding photographer’s dream. Although ceremonies can be held inside, sales manager Chuck Bois notes that most couples opt for outdoor ceremonies in the garden gazebo. The gazebo, surrounded by flower gardens, benches, and stone walls, is nestled among an inviting array of trees and ornate shrubbery. It’s simply a postcard from every angle. Receptions take place inside—either in the Leicester Room downstairs, or in the Ballroom upstairs, which accommodate up to 100 and 300 guests, respectively. Ceremonies may also be held in either of these rooms. The intimate Leicester Room is best for small gatherings (including rehearsal dinners), while the Ballroom is best for larger soirées. This sweeping room features a 26 x
16’ dance floor, built-in bar, and a high ceiling. But perhaps the most enticing feature of all is the spectacular view of the golf course. The room is very versatile, says Bois, and can be set up a number of different ways. Leicester Country Club offers six packages ranging from $33.95 per person to $74.00 per person, all of which include a champagne toast; international cheese, cracker, and fruit display; cake cutting service; linens; and gold and ivory Chiavari chairs. Packages have a generous five- and six-hour allotment (five hours for receptions and an additional hour for those doing a garden gazebo ceremony), and a bridal suite is also available for each of the reception rooms. As for navigating the wedding day waters, the Leicester Country Club helps ensure smooth sailing by providing an on-site wedding coordinator. A banquet manager is also available at your event. The most popular package is the Chef’s Station ($46 per person), which showcases a number of delicious food options. Couples can choose options for pasta, carving, and
international stations—all of which are chefattended. The Chef’s Station offering also includes both stationary and passed hors d’oeuvres service. All packages are customizable, and the Leicester Country Club truly offers one-stop shopping. Some amenities are included in

one or more of the packages, whereas others are additional options in general. The wedding coordinator can help with the hiring of a Justice of the Peace or pull together the logistics for fresh floral arrangements. Music services and lighting services are available, too, as are linen upgrades and chair covers and sashes. Of course, no wedding reception is complete without a toast (or two) to the bride and groom. There are several options for adult beverage service, from a champagne fountain to wine service to an open bar.
And then there’s everyone’s favorite guest, who’s always late to the party but nevertheless welcome: the wedding cake. The Leicester Country Club can coordinate that, too, and not just the flavor options. Think custom-designed wedding cakes with all manner of creativity, from white box-style cakes with cascading roses, to asymmetrical multicolored cakes with fondant frosting. When asked what makes the Leicester Country Club an especially noteworthy choice, Bois doesn’t hesitate in his response: “The food—we’re known for it. Excellent
food is our greatest attribute. We pride ourselves on it.” Some of the more popular menu items are Fresh Baked Brie en Croute, Lobster Ravioli, Chicken Boursin, Pan Seared Halibut, and Grilled Filet of Beef with a Cabernet Demi Glace. Other factors that Bois believes set the facility apart from similar venues in the area are its great service and attractive pricing. If the Leicester Country Club sounds like it might be a good fit, and if planning allows, you may want to consider attending their annual Wedding Showcase. Pictures and videos are helpful, but seeing the venue “dressed” for a wedding is an even better way to visualize what your own event might look like there. The Wedding Showcase also gives you an opportunity to sample cuisine, meet the staff, and become acquainted with preferred vendors. Wait. We’re talking about a country club, so there must be golf, right? For sure. Many wedding parties go for a round of golf prior to the rehearsal dinner or even the wedding. It’s one way, Bois says, to enjoy a little relaxation before the festivities begin. Whether you tee up or not, the Leicester Country Club is an exceptional choice for Worcesterarea weddings. “We’re a one-stop shop,” says Andrea Rotolo, Director of Sales. “We offer everything you need for a fraction of what you would get at other venues.” Customization and flexibility are key at The Manor, which can accommodate events with guest lists as small as twenty-five and as large as 400. Rotolo and her team pride themselves on their ability to make every couple’s dreams come true, no matter their vision, style, or budget. “It’s your wedding— not mine,” she says. “We want everything to fit the modern bride.” Outdoor ceremonies at The Manor happen in the beautiful and quaint gazebo, while indoor ceremonies can take place in the venue’s sun-drenched lobby, which features floor-to-ceiling windows and a winding staircase. “The lobby is ideal for smaller, more intimate ceremonies,” says Rotolo, but “many of the onsite ceremonies take place in the ballroom.” West Boylston’s iconic Old Stone Church, which is located just a stone’s throw from The Manor and on the bank of the Wachusett Reservior, is an ideal place for beautiful outdoor photos. Before and after the ceremony, the wedding party can primp and relax in the spacious bridal suite, or sip champagne and chat in the cozy upper lobby. Receptions at The Manor take place exclusively in the luxurious ballroom, which can be divided or expanded to fit celebrations of almost any size. At $120 per person, this lavish package includes passed hors d’oeuvres and passed wine or champagne fountain during cocktail hour, a champagne or wine toast, an elegant four-course dinner prepared by The Manor’s professional chefs, wine service during dinner, a decadent chocolate fountain, a custom-designed wedding cake, fresh floral centerpieces, a professional DJ from Sterling DJ Services, white or ivory floorlength linens, and chair covers, bows, and

napkins in a beautiful array of colors. A variety of other all-inclusive packages are available, but Rotolo stresses that anything is possible. “We can customize and accommodate all packages to every couple’s desire,” she says. Additionally, all packages come with a personal wedding consultant and host, who stays with couples throughout the entire wedding-planning process. “We go through every small detail from beginning to end,” says Rotolo. The Manor can work with virtually any vendor, but Rotolo has a list of preferred local vendors whom she knows will provide couples with top-notch service. As a small, family-owned business, The Manor does everything possible to support other local businesses. “Local business is what we’re all about,” says Rotolo. Also available for bridal showers, engagement parties, baby showers, rehearsal dinners, corporate events, and private parties, The Manor is truly a one-stop celebration shop. So, if an elegant space, amazing hospitality, and affordable, all-inclusive packages are on your must-have list, then The Manor is undoubtedly the place for you. Maids of Honor Making the right decisions when choosing your bridal party. by Jamie Santa Cruz
o
ne of the most exciting parts of wedding planning is asking your best friends to stand up beside you at the big event. But as many past brides know, choosing your attendants—and working with them successfully through the wedding day—can be tricky business. Linnea Tangorra, owner of Boston-based Tangorra Wedding Planning, says conflicts aren’t common, but about 10% of her brides do end up experiencing some sort of tension with bridesmaids. Here are top tips for avoiding the common pitfalls.

By the Numbers How many people should you ask to stand at your side? Jessica Laniewski, who got married in Ipswich, Massachusetts last September, decided on seven. In retrospect, though, she thinks seven was too many. “Three to five is probably a better number,” she says. Her bridesmaids didn’t know each other well, and three “teams” developed within the group. “There were times that I had to play referee . . . The mix of personalities didn’t work as well as I had hoped.” Tangorra agrees that fewer is better, with four and under being the ideal number. In lieu of a large bridal party, Tangorra suggests including close friends and family in other ways. For example, ask someone to do a reading during the ceremony or a toast at the reception; others can hand out programs. If you opt for a larger party, be aware that your costs will go up: each extra bridesmaid means an extra bouquet and gift, plus extra transportation expenses. More attendants also means more opinions to consider when deciding on attire and décor, and a larger group will need more prep time on the day of the wedding. One thing not to worry about, says Tangorra, is having the same number of attendants as your groom. “Don’t feel obligated to make the sides even!” she says.
“Choosing your attendants—and working with them successfully through the wedding day— can be tricky business.” Titles and Such Some brides are tempted to try and avoid playing favorites, but there’s a reason why it’s traditional to designate one woman as the maid or matron of honor. Holly Polino, who got married two summers ago in Newport, Maine, chose not to hand out special titles in her own wedding, but in the end, she ended up relying heavily on one particular bridesmaid (who ended up baking her wedding cake and transporting it 1,000 miles to the wedding). In retrospect, says Polino, it would have been better to recognize that friend with special honor.
But if one maid of honor is good, two is not necessarily better. Laniewski opted to dub both her sister and her best friend as maids of honor, thinking that the two would complement each other’s strengths and result in a stronger bridal party, but things didn’t work out quite as she intended. “One of them overshadowed the other,” says Laniewski, who adds that she would choose just one of the two if she had it to do over again.
Pressure Points If you are feeling pressured to include a friend or family member in your bridal party whom you don’t feel particularly close to, it’s okay to resist, says Tangorra. “Don’t pick somebody because . . . you were a bridesmaid in their wedding ten years ago,” says Tangorra. “Pick the very closest people to you.” On the other hand, including a person in your bridal party who isn’t necessarily your best friend has the potential to make a difference long after the wedding is over. Including the groom’s relatives, for instance, can pave the way for closer family relationships in the long run. In Laniewski’s case, her bridal party included her fiancé’s sister as well as his sister-in-law. The two weren’t heavily involved in hands-on planning, yet their presence and emotional support helped smooth Laniewski’s transition as she joined her husband’s family.
Great Expectations The most basic role of a bridesmaid is to be there to support you— emotionally and practically—as you plan your big day, but it’s easy to have mismatched expectations about what exactly is involved. To make sure that everything flows smoothly, here are three principles to keep in mind: 1. Realize that this event is central for you, but not necessarily for your bridesmaids. In Tangorra’s experience, brides often have hurt feelings when their bridesmaids aren’t as wrapped up in the wedding as the bride would like. A number of her clients have gotten upset when a bridesmaid couldn’t drop everything to go dress shopping, didn’t want to go to vendor meeting, or didn’t want to alter her normal hairstyle for the wedding day. But it’s important to keep a dose of perspective: “This is the most important thing in your life right now, but it might not be to your bridesmaids,” says Tangorra. Remember that your bridesmaids have lives of their own. continued on page 74 www.bridegroommag.com
BRIDE&GROOM Spring 2014 73
2. If you choose bridesmaids who aren’t local, recognize that they may have limited ability to help out with practical tasks. When Polino got married, one of her bridesmaids was living out of the country, so she couldn’t offer much practical assistance before the wedding. Polino was okay with that: “Her presence [at the wedding] was enough,” she says. 3. Don’t leave bridesmaids to guess about your wishes. As Laniewski’s bridesmaids were planning her bachelorette party, the group wound up in disagreement about what kind of event to plan. Her sister suggested a big night out, but her roommates pushed instead for renting a house somewhere out of town. The subject caused tension until Laniewski finally clarified her preferences. Lesson learned: “Be straightforward,” Laniewski says. “It’s important to let people know what you want, and in hindsight, I was wishy-washy.” Jamie Santa Cruz is a freelance writer based in New York City.
What to Do with Tattoos A frequent point of tension with weddings, says Tangorra, is tattoos. If one of your bridesmaids has a tattoo and you don’t feel comfortable with it being on display, tread lightly. Sometimes (say, if your venue is a conservative Catholic church or if you have family with strong opinions about body art), you might feel the need for heightened modesty, and that’s ok. Explain the situation and ask your bridesmaid how she would feel about a shawl or a makeup artist (at your expense) to disguise the tattoo for the day. But be prepared, says Tangorra: some bridesmaids won’t be comfortable with altering who they are, and it’s not reasonable to force. “These people are close enough friends [to be in your bridal party], and this is part of who they are,” she says. “Accept it.”

Crafting your reception meal. by Jamie Santa Cruz
lthough your wedding ceremony is a big deal, for many couples the real focus is on the party that comes afterward. Aside from getting the chance to dress up, mingle, and dance the night away, most of your guests are looking forward to filling their bellies with some truly delicious fare. For that reason, planning your reception meal is a key part of preparing for the big day.
Gathering Ideas The best place to begin the menu planning process is by getting a sense of all the available options. Ten years ago, says Susan Lawrence, co-owner of Pepper’s Fine Catering in Northboro, Massachusetts, there were far fewer options—couples typically had only two or three choices of restaurants or caterers who could serve their meal, and they were locked into a short list of menus to select from. Today, by contrast, there is much more potential for customization,
76 Spring 2014
BRIDE&GROOM
www.bridegroommag.com
and couples have infinite options when it comes to foods they can serve, how those foods are presented, and what sort of atmosphere they can create for the meal. “It’s so personal now,” says Lawrence. To get an idea of the possibilities, Lawrence suggests starting off by browsing websites. Wedding Wire, Massachusetts Wedding Guide, Pinterest, and caterers’ websites are chock full of inspiration that you can use to get the ideas flowing. After exploring the options, you’ll be better able to narrow down your priorities for the big day.
Crafting a Memorable Menu Once you’ve gotten a sense of the possibilities, it’s time to narrow down the menu. Kate Monteiro, sales manager and events planner at Boston-based Capers Catering suggests incorporating personal favorite foods into your reception meal. “Have the meal reflect you as a couple,” she says. “I love asking couples, what is your
favorite food, and do you have a favorite restaurant, and is there a drink that you really enjoy having together and making together?” The most memorable weddings are the ones that are individualized, so go ahead and inject your own personality into your reception menu. Next, think about food presentation. As any good chef knows, half the appeal of a meal is its appearance, so talk with your caterer about getting creative. The question, says Lawrence, is, “How can we best offer those foods in a way that makes it a memory, makes it exciting, makes it delicious?” For example, if you’re set on seafood, she suggests a lobster BLT appetizer served on a mini brioche roll or small edible cracker spoon, or a clam chowder offered in small demitasse cups. Every bride is looking for that “wow” factor, and creative presentation is the way to achieve it.
Capers Catering
Service Options At the same time that you’re choosing which foods to offer, you’ll also need to consider service options. Traditionally, most couples have opted for either a served dinner with multiple plated courses (usually including a salad or soup, entrée, and dessert), or a buffet meal. More recently, though, couples are turning to other approaches. One hot option right now: family-style meals, in which servers bring platters of food to each table and guests pass the dishes around, helping themselves. Another increasingly popular choice is a cocktail-style reception. This option involves
an abundance of passed hors d’oeuvres, plus a variety of food stations, which Monteiro describes as “mini buffets” with varying themes (think an Asian station offering Chinese lo mein alongside a New England station serving clam chowder). If you’re looking to mix it up and inject personality, a cocktail-style reception with food stations provides the most potential for variety and flair, since you can offer widely varying cuisines at side-by-side stations.
“Have the meal reflect you as a couple.” Containing Costs If you’re working within a budget, one of the most important strategies for keeping costs reasonable is to choose food items that are less expensive—especially when it comes to main proteins. Monteiro and Lawrence both suggest working with lesser cuts of meat or fish. “If you want to have some sort of beef on your menu,” says Monteiro, “maybe get a little more creative than the typical filet, which is our most expensive cut of beef, and do short ribs.” But lesser cuts don’t have to equal boring. Dress up the meat with interesting marinades and dry rubs, and guests won’t feel like they’re missing out on a thing. Another key cost-saving strategy: opt for a served dinner or buffet rather than a familystyle dinner or cocktail atmosphere. Couples often assume that served dinners will be the priciest option, but typically they are actually cheaper, since they involve fewer menu items and since the caterer knows exactly how much of each dish to prepare. By contrast, family-style and cocktail receptions are usually the most expensive options, since both typically require more food, more platters, and more wait staff.
Pepper’s Fine Foods
Trends to Note “Food trends change just like every other trend changes,” says Lawrence. So what’s hot right now? • Full dessert tables. The trend used to be candy bars at the end of the wedding, but not so anymore. Full-scale dessert tables, with lots of different treats, are back in style. • Small plates served in interesting ways. Think limited portions of exciting, original flavors presented in unique vessels—such as shoestring pommes frites served in a cone with truffle parmesan sprinkled over the top. • Menus that combine the protein, an interesting starch, and vegetables all in one dish. Lawrence’s example: roasted sweet potato risotto
Final Advice Overwhelmed with the possibilities? It’s your caterer’s or wedding coordinator’s job to help walk you through the options and craft a reception that’s perfect for you, so don’t be shy about asking for guidance. “The biggest thing is communicating and having the conversation with your caterer,” says Lawrence. “Open up and let us help the process.”
with pecans, cinnamon, and maple. With blackened shrimp added in, the dish becomes a whole entrée.

When enjoying the Sweet Surrender treatment, couples begin with a relaxing, thirty-minute soak by candlelight in a private deep-soaking tub, followed by an hour of side-by-side aromatherapy massage. Another great way to unwind is with an experience called Indulgences, where couples enjoy a scalp massage followed by a mini-facial. Next, couples enjoy a therapeutic massage with essential oils and a soothing aroma wrap accompanied by candlelight,

Historic Honeymoons

hat better way to launch your new life as a couple than a honeymoon full of tradition, beauty, and of course, romance? New England is rife with opportunities to indulge in the richness of the region’s history in settings that pamper while showcasing the gifts of deep roots and enduring institutions. Consider New England’s centuries-old reputation as a center for arts, literature, and education. Pair that with the magnificence of the region’s mountains, the serenity of its bucolic towns, or the allure of its oceanfront, and you’ve got the makings of the perfect post-wedding trip.
Seaside Splendor Come ashore in Newport, Rhode Island and you can celebrate in the neighborhood of the Astors and the Vanderbilts, where oceanfront mansions built in the late 1800s served as summer “cottages” for the country’s wealthiest families. Founded in 1639, Newport is credited amongst the United States cities with the greatest number of Colonial buildings in existence, and is home to America’s oldest synagogue, renowned as an eighteenth-century port, a nineteenth-century resort, and, in more recent decades, the site of the “Summer White House” for presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower. Today’s visitors revel in the area’s beaches, vineyards, mansion tours, art galleries, and summer music festivals. The Chanler at Cliff Walk invites visitors to stay in one of Newport’s majestic mansions, yet with a sense of comfort and ease. Built in 1873 for Congressman John Winthrop Chanler, the mansion has been extensively renovated to showcase history with interiors from Greek Revival to Gothic, Colonial to classic Cape Cod. Each of the
twenty spacious rooms and suites—most with fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and ocean views—offers a delightful honeymoon hideaway. The Chanler’s staff will gladly bring meals to your luxurious room, make reservations at their award-winning Spiced Pear dining room in the main house, or chauffer you to any of Newport’s acclaimed restaurants.
Mountain Escapes If the mountains provide the wedding escape you seek, New England certainly delivers. Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa exemplifies the majestic retreats that have drawn travelers to the White Mountains since the 1800s. Originally known as the Mountain View House, this scenic haven has provided respite to presidents such as Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, writers from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Stephen King, and such American icons as baseball great Babe Ruth, movie starlet Bette Davis, and astronaut Neil Armstrong. continued on page 84

the sumptuous relaxation it offers. Guest rooms and public spaces are outfitted with wood-burning fireplaces; two magnificent, floor-to-ceiling stone hearths reside in the main dining room alone. A Japanese soaking tub called the Furo fills a blue-tiled room surrounded by peaceful woodlands, while individual suites invite guests to luxuriate in deep soaking tubs or whirlpools with exquisite mountain views.
An Education in History
Located in Whitefield, New Hampshire, the Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa modernized and re-opened in 2002 with fully renovated guest rooms, golf course, heated pool, tennis courts, and wine cellar. More recent upgrades added a plush in-house movie theater and an impressive spa. In fact, the hot tub, perched atop the Tower Spa with 360-degree views of the White Mountains, could be reason enough to book your honeymoon stay at this spectacularly romantic resort. Those seeking more activity and adventure can enjoy the resort’s extensive schedule, which includes dogsledding and snow-tubing in winter, campfires and sports competitions in summer, cider-pressing in the fall, and wine tastings, wagon rides, historic tours, and fitness programs year-round. Area activities, depending on the season, include maple sugaring, riding the Mount Washington Cog Railway, downhill skiing, horseback riding, river-rafting, or joining tours to view moose, explore covered bridges, or savor local cuisine. If you’re looking for a getaway that is both rustic and opulent, take a good look at Bar-

nard, Vermont’s Twin Farms. Originally a 1795 farmhouse that was later made famous as the home of Nobel-winning author Sinclair Lewis, this 325-acre refuge offers allinclusive accommodations, fine dining, and guided activities to guests of its twenty suites and cottages. Home to an impressive art collection featuring the work of Jim Dines, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jasper Johns, the beauty of the lush interiors is rivaled only by the stunning views of the property’s meadows, orchards, and rolling hills, all framed by the majestic Green Mountains. Revolutionary-era Post Road runs through the scenic estate, yet today Twin Farms is notable for its pristine quiet, and the busiest corridors are those enjoyed by the resort’s hikers, snowshoers, and skiers. Weather permitting, the property’s “Sherpa,” a large snowmobile, transports skiers to the top of a handful of trails for alpine skiing. In season, staff outfit guests for canoeing, fly-fishing, ice-skating, or mountain biking. Twin Farms is particularly alluring for

If your style is not quite so rustic, consider instead the charms of some of New England’s most historic college towns. Cultured, scenic, and brimming with character, the towns of Amherst, Massachusetts and Hanover, New Hampshire are two prime settings for a romantic escape. Amherst is a vibrant town in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, surrounded by artsy hill towns and pastoral farmlands. The town itself is rich with bookstores and cafés, and together with neighboring Northampton, offers an abundant selection of restaurants, concert venues, and museums. Set on the Amherst Common, abutting Amherst College, Lord Jeffery Inn has served the town and the college since the 1920s. Recent renovations have maintained the Colonial Revival décor while updating guests’ experience with contemporary facilities. Don’t miss the opportunity to dine at Lord Jeffrey’s restaurant, 30Boltwood, a richly appointed, candlelit room outfitted with plush banquettes. Talented bartenders mix spectacular concoctions reflecting local flavors and seasonal influences, matching the
farm-to-table menu. On pleasant nights, enjoy drinks or dinner around the inn’s romantic and artistic fire pit on the patio. Overlooking Dartmouth College is the Hanover Inn, where you can’t help but be awed by the friendly, accommodating service and the convenience of the inn’s central location. Linked by indoor corridors to the fabulous Hood Museum and the Hopkins Center for the Arts, as well as the spectacular restaurant, PINE, the Hanover Inn offers
a cozy escape from rough winter weather. Yet for those seeking outdoor pleasures, the Appalachian Trail is accessed just steps from the inn’s front door. Play golf or even ski right on Dartmouth’s campus, or allow the inn to pack you a picnic lunch and send you off to area bike trails, a kayak trip on the Connecticut River, or an outdoor concert at the beautiful Saint Gaudens National Historic Park. The original inn was the 1770s home of
General Ebenezer Brewster, before becoming a tavern, then re-opening as Dartmouth Hotel and eventually the Hanover Inn. In recent years, this Dartmouth-owned inn was extensively renovated and now reflects its centuries of history in updated décor featuring local art, stonework, and furnishings. Honeymooning in London and Rome by Stacey Marcus
I
f you’re setting your sights on a European honeymoon, two places
to put at the top of the list are London and Rome. What could be more romantic than a romp through the streets of London, enjoying art, theater, culture, and shopping in a city that radiates royalty? Or, picture yourself strolling through the streets of Rome—steamy espresso in one hand, gelato in the other—exploring the cobblestone streets, art, and history of a city brimming with ancient culture. 86 Spring 2014

Both of these gorgeous cities have a lot to offer, so here are a few suggestions to help narrow down your plans.
Love in London Where to Snuggle: The Goring If you’re looking for a honeymoon laced with royal romance, The Goring is the ultimate imperial gift wrapped in a silk ribbon. The only five-star luxury hotel in London that is still owned and operated by the family that built it more than 100 years ago, The Goring was recently named Relais & Châteaux’s only London member of their prestigious collection. You’ll adore everything about this enchanting boutique hotel, which is located in the center of London, right next to Buckingham Palace. A stay in any one of the sixty-nine rooms and suites is simply splendid, especially if you book one of The Goring’s luxurious Most Splendid Rooms. Along with divine furnishings and fabrics, you’ll discover an attention to detail that is both fit for royalty and refreshingly relaxed. The Goring’s mascot, a fluffy white sheep, embodies a soft spirit that permeates the hotel. Pair this whimsy with a royal elegance and you’ve got a vibe as intoxicating as a glass of Dom Pérignon. Be sure to enjoy The Goring’s award-winning Afternoon Tea, which is fit for a king, queen, or lovebirds celebrating their launch. A stroll through the large and private Goring Gardens is also a must.

Stuff to Do Circle the Clouds: Couples can canoodle on London’s giant Ferris wheel, the London Eye, which is Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel. What better way to launch a life together than to sway in the clouds and take in an aerial view of London? Walk in the Parks: There’s nothing like a walk in the park to make you feel close and cozy. There are plenty of parks in London to explore, including Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, St. James Park, and Greenwich Park. continued on page 88

Tiptoe Through the Royal Gardens: The area surrounding Buckingham Palace is a splendid place to stroll. Whether you meander through the royal gardens, visit the Royal Mews or Queen’s Gallery, or watch the Changing of the Guards, the air around Buckingham Palace is perfumed with romance. Take a Free Ride: London is teeming with free museums to visit, including the British Museum, Imperial War Museum, Museum of London, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and Victoria and Albert Museum. Enjoy World-Class Entertainment: Don’t miss London’s West End, which is alive with theater, classical music, opera, ballet, jazz, and rock. Go With the Flow: Take a boat ride down the Thames River and see how many landmarks you can locate.
The Hassler, geoffreyweill.com
Romance in Rome Where to Snuggle: The Hassler Roma For more than 120 years, Rome’s iconic Hassler Roma hotel has sat at the top of the Spanish Steps and welcomed royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries with style and impeccable service. Each of the Hassler’s eighty-two rooms and fourteen suites is outfitted for a king or queen. In fact, if you thumb through the Hassler’s guest book, known as the Golden Book, you’ll see the names of royals such as Prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and Queen Noor of Jordan, along with such notables as Pablo Picasso, Clark Gable, John Steinbeck, and Jennifer Lopez. Honeymooners can enjoy special packages that include goodies like a bottle of Prosecco and a fresh fruit basket, a romantic dinner for two at Imàgo, and a couples’ massage at Kami at the Amorvero SPA. Stuff to Do Piazza Hop: Ready, set: hop! A great GPS is all you need to guide you through Rome’s myriad piazzas, including Piazza Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Campo de’ Fiori, Piazza del Pantheon, and Piazza del Popolo, to name a few. Toss a coin in Trevi Fountain and make a wish. Remember to stand with your back to the Fountain and throw the coin over your left shoulder with your right hand to ensure a return trip to Rome! Shop ‘til you drop along the fashionable Via del Corso, Via del Babuino, and Via di Ripetta. Travel through time to the ancient empire by walking through the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Visit Vatican City to get a glimpse of the Pope and walk through Sistine Chapel to see Michelangelo’s masterpieces. Mangia! Mangia! Take a seat at any restaurant and enjoy the fresh and flavorful foods of Italy. Sip a cappuccino and enjoy a slice of la dolce vita! Stacey Marcus is a freelance writer based in Marblehead, MA.
