Golf Anyone? How to Work a Round or Two Into Your Wedding Schedule by Connie Jeske Crane
12 Spring 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
Love golf? Been practicing that swing? If you’ve chosen a New England golf and country club as your wedding venue, you’re probably going to be pretty tempted to hit the golf course at some point. And not surprisingly, given that New England has hundreds of top-rated championship courses with dramatic coastal and inland settings, your guests might want to join you. So how do you make this work and not overburden your wedding schedule? We talked to a couple of wedding specialists to get their advice on how to keep both the golfers and non-golfers in your crowd happy. Planning Ahead Jaclyn Watson, owner of JW Events in Vermont, says she often sees golf on the schedule at country club weddings. But to make it work smoothly, Watson says, planning ahead is a must. “When we’re working with our clients, we say ‘Okay, these are the events and activities that are happening at the club. Do you want to do anything with your wedding party or your guests?’ If there’s a scavenger hunt going on or a big golf tournament, if you want to get your folks involved, then we’ll set it up.”
Watson stresses that you want to think about all of your guests. “So for people who want to golf, we’ll make sure we know, ‘this is the number of people who want to golf; this is the group that’s going to go.’ And then we’ll create another event for the non-golfers, so we’ll have a golfing, hiking, and a spa activity . . . plus we’re going to let everyone know that this is also a day when you can just do nothing. I mean, if you just want to walk around and chill out, that’s okay.”
“Mostly I see golf happening the day before the wedding. It’s a nice way to see everyone and have a little fun before the big day.”
continued on page 14 www.bridegroommag.com

And how many golfers should a couple expect to host? “I probably see no more than 20 people,” says Alyssa Friedman, event coordinator at the Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, MA. “Usually I see the people in the wedding party and maybe a few people from out of town.” Timing As for when to book your tee time, options here include the day before your wedding, and the day of. Friedman says, “Mostly I see golf happening the day before the wedding. If guests are coming in from out of town, it’s a nice way to see everyone and have a little fun before the big day. Watson says she actually sees more golf on the morning of the wedding, with the groom and other family members golfing while the bride gets ready: “For most of our weddings, the women don’t golf, they spa. For a majority, it is the guys golfing for weddings and the girls are getting ready with hair and makeup and nails and all that. But on occasion we’ll see women or

somebody else in the group heading out.” Who Pays? For extra activities like golf there aren’t hard-and-fast etiquette rules about who pays for what. It really varies, says Friedman: “I sometimes see the father of the bride pay for everyone or the father of groom pays for everyone and sometimes everyone pays for their own round.” Some couples include a round of golf for the wedding party in their wedding budgets, Friedman adds. While costs could also include rentals, both Watson and Friedman say, in general, golfers tend to bring their own clubs. Communication Finally, clear communication around the little details is really helpful. Here, Watson says “When it comes to invitations and stationery, what we usually do—because the last thing you want to do with an invitation is make it completely messy and have tons of detail on it—so we suggest doing a wedding website, and invite
guests to visit the website to check out all the information about the venue. And on that website is where we’ll have the list of activities that you can either register for or sign up for.” Connie Jeske Crane is a full-time freelance writer and reports frequently on weddings, parenting, sustainability, and social media. You can visit her at conniejeskecrane.com.

Courtney & Chris Wesche July 9, 2016 Falmouth, MA
Flashback to October 2011: Courtney Strakosch was living with a few roommates outside of Boston. Chris happened to be friends and lacrosse buddies with one of her roommates. They had plans to go out in the city that night and Courtney planned to join them. Chris was super tired from work and wanted to stay home, but decided to pull it together and go spend some time with his friends. Chris arrived at the house and found no one home, except for Courtney. She was in her leopard bathrobe, getting ready for the night, When she heard a knock at the front door, she opened it to the love of her life. 16 Spring 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
With a little white puppy in her hand and the 90s hit Hanson’s “MMMBop” playing in the background, it was love at first sight for both of them. The couple wed on July 9, 2016, in Falmouth, at Courtney’s grandparents’ home. Although her grandparents have since passed on, the Strakosch home is the place that holds Courtney’s fondest and most cherished memories of spending summers with her family. The party
then moved to the reception at the Flying Bridge in Falmouth. The restaurant is right up the harbor from the house, so the bridal party arrived in style on a boat. It was a beautiful and unseasonably cool summer day; the cloudy skies had a romantic feel, and the guests enjoyed the comfortable temperature. After being together for nearly five years, and engaged for exactly one year, Chris and Courtney had their dream wedding by the sea.
“They wanted the event to have a shabby chic, nautical feel, tying in both of their personalities. They pulled it off perfectly.”

They wanted the event to have a shabby chic, nautical feel, tying in both of their personalities. They pulled it off perfectly. You’ll notice that mini patrón bottles are used as place cards. The story behind this is that Chris is the only guy Courtney ever bought a drink for—the very night they met she bought him a shot of tequila. This has been a celebration beverage for them throughout the years, so they creatively tied it into the party theme. Courtney and Chris shared the day with about 119 guests, and the day was filled with the warmest of memories. Courtney’s younger brother wrote the most beautiful wedding sermon, and there was not a dry eye in the crowd. The bride and groom exchanged their own vows, which only added to the intimate feeling of the day. Looking back on their wedding day, the couple agreed that the arbor built by Chris himself added a personal and beautiful touch to their ceremony.

Kayla and Matt Gesualdi July 3, 2016 Sea Crest Hotel in Falmouth, MA Kayla and Matt Gesualdi wed on July 3, 2016, at the Sea Crest Hotel in Falmouth, MA. The couple met through a mutual friend and soon realized they lived across the lake from each other and were practically neighbors. That connection alone sparked an interest for them both. Matt called out of work the very next day, and they spent the day at the beach with a group of Kayla’s coworkers he had never met before. One week later, they ventured to a Red Sox game which they consider their first official date and the start of their wonderful relationship, even though the date didn’t go off without a hiccup; Matt’s car was towed for parking in a street sweeping zone. 24 Spring 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
When planning the proposal, Matt took into consideration a few of Kayla’s favorite things: her love for the water and being with family and friends. He waited until Kayla’s twin sister and her husband were on leave from the army for the holidays to pop the big question. Days before Christmas, they helped him decorate his place with more than 300 tealight candles in the sand down by the lake where the couple originally met. It was thoughtful, original, and everything that Kayla ever wanted. Kayla and Matt were engaged for a little more than two years before tying the knot last July. They used this time to find the perfect venue, flower arrangements, and DJ, and they couldn’t be happier with the choices they made. They chose the first place they visited: the Sea Crest Beach Resort. They took the time to check out other coastal wedding locations from Maine to Rhode Island, but nothing pulled at their heartstrings the way the Sea Crest did. The staff at the Sea Crest was phenomenal and offered the “toes in the sand” beach wedding they were looking for, with the rehearsal, ceremony, and reception all within one resort. Playing off the location, their wedding had a nautical theme with coastal colors, using sea glass as their inspiration. The couple took a trip to Plum Island a couple months prior to find some great nautical pieces such as driftwood, buoys, sea glass, and old lobster traps that had washed up on shore. Style was key for this couple, and they wanted to keep it seasonally friendly. The groom and groomsmen wore light grey Joseph Abboud tuxedos with no jackets. They went with a vest, shirt, and pants for this summer wedding, paired with Sperry boat shoes and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. The bridesmaids wore dresses by Bill Levkoff. All their gowns were the same mint green color, which was reminiscent of sea glass, but each maid’s gown had its own style. The bride wore an ivory/silver fit-and-flare gown by Allure Bridals.
“Playing off the location, their wedding had a nautical theme with coastal colors, using sea glass as their inspiration.”

They continued the nautical motif with their favors: starfish bottle openers. Table centerpieces were simple glass vases filled with sea glass and flowers, with sand on the table around it. The place cards were favors in themselves as each guest’s name was tied to a sand dollar resting in sand. Guests dined on a surf and turf style menu; filet mignon or herb-crusted cod, along with an amazing clam chowder, were the main course choices. After some delicious dining, guests spent the night dancing away with DJ Dan Campbell. Kayla and Matt were very pleased with his mash-ups of old and new music, which kept the dance floor full the entire night. Kayla and Matt suggest that you “take more time rather than less to plan and coordinate the wedding. When people say to enjoy every moment because it flies by, they’re right. Take the time to appreciate and love each other throughout the process.” 26 Spring 2017

Go Green for Your
Wedding by Cindy Papish Gerber

As a leading green living and sustainable business expert, Kate L. Harrison
has helped more than two million brides go green with eco-friendly wedding ideas, products, and services. Defining a green wedding as, “any wedding where the couple tries to decrease the impact of their event on the planet,” Harrison acknowledges that going green not only increases your “opportunity to make a difference,” but can also reduce your wedding costs. Invitations Recycled and post-consumer waste paper, tree-free paper, soy inks, or virtual/ online correspondence can drastically reduce resource consumption. Traditional papermaking often uses “an energy-intensive process and creates a large amount of wastewater, solid waste and, harsh chemicals.” Jewelry Seek out jewelers who handcraft rings made from recycled stones and metals, as well as ethically sourced diamonds, gems, and metals. And how about taking recycling a step further by resetting family heirlooms and vintage pieces. Attire Buy a pre-owned or vintage gown or wear an heirloom gown. “On preownedweddingdresses.com you can find dresses at 30 to 60% off, which can add up when you’re looking at top-shelf designers,” says Harrison. Purchasing garments made from sustainable organic fabric or donating your new gown are good green alternatives. Favors Give out potted plants, seeds, herbs, organic edibles, soaps, or soy candles, DIY trinkets made from recycled or found objects (seashells, driftwood, stones, etc.), or purchase gently used items. In lieu of a tangible favor, making donations on behalf of your guests to a favorite cause is a thoughtful gesture. continued on page 32 annemariebouchard.com

Flowers For her own wedding, Harrison used “local dahlias for a couple of hundred dollars and mixed them with hydrangeas and fall grasses from my mother’s garden.” According to Christina Donovan, owner and designer of Land Escapes Design Inc., “There are many ways couples can make their floral designs more ecofriendly, ranging from choice of materials to post-reception handling.” Her company works with local, organic growers and suppliers, tailoring designs “to what will be available and abundant at the time of the event.” “Live plants, terrariums, and dish gardens” can double as favors for your guests,” notes Donovan. For the ultimate eco-chic statement, she suggests “a tablescape of candles mixed with fresh fruit and photos,” or customizing centerpieces “made from paper, cloth, wood, or metal.” A self-professed “comic-book nerd,” Dave McCuin, and his wife Sarah were delighted by the “unique, colorful comic-book boutonnieres and cocktail table bouquets” that Land Escape created for their November 2014 reception at New Hampshire’s Bedford Village Inn. Décor and Venue Location and season can serve as inspiration for a number of natural, cost-saving ideas. A venue with built-in decor, such as a museum, arboretum, aquarium, or vineyard, provides a naturally scenic backdrop and can positively impact your wedding’s environmental footprint. Zukas Hilltop Barn in Spencer, MA, “tries to do their part in being as environmentally sound as possible,” says wedding and events coordinator, Alyson Russo. This venue is “committed to recycling, composting, using water pitchers/stations vs. bottled water, eggs from their chickens and beautiful herbs and produce from their gardens, fruit trees and berry bushes whenever possible for their menus. “We also donate any leftover food to our local food pantry/church.”

We partner with our clients to not only curate the wedding they have dreamed of, but to bring to life a day that has a positive impact on their guests, community, and the environment.” “It was important that our wedding be as eco-friendly as possible,” says Nicole Candelore about her August 2015 wedding to Adam Candelore held at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson, MA. Some of their green initiatives, “were making sure our caterer used compostable plates and served locally sourced, in-season ingredients,” requiring their guests staying at the campground’s log cabins to bring their own bed linens, and hiring Land Escapes to design centerpieces using recycled wine bottles, votives, and succulents, and to create “a sentimental and very personal” groom’s boutonnière made entirely out of ticket stubs from concerts where Adam and Nicole first met, attended and became engaged— proof positive that greening has real meaning! Rachel & Richard Denis October 9, 2016 The Mansion at Bald Hill Woodstock, CT
Richard Louis Denis III and Rachel Ann (Schroth) Denis celebrated their nuptials on October 9, 2016, at The Mansion at Bald Hill in Woodstock, CT. Rachel and Richie have known each other since the fourth grade. The two shared several mutual friends even though they were separated by a grade. Many of their friends from elementary school have remained a large part of their lives and were even in the wedding party, which added to the special day. The two remained friends throughout high school and eventually started dating during Rachel’s freshman year of college.
34 Spring 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
Richie proposed to Rachel two weeks after she graduated from nursing school. The two had a running joke where Rachel would ask Richie when she could marry him, and he would always respond “When you’re finished school.” They were in the process of buying a home during the last months of Rachel’s final semester, so even though they had been dating for some time (seven years), Rachel wasn’t expecting a proposal. They had a trip planned to Colorado to celebrate Rachel’s completion of nursing school and Richie had asked if she wanted to take a trip to the beach before they left, seeing that she would miss the first couple weeks of unofficial summer. York Beach in Maine had a special place in the couple’s hearts because it was the first place they vacationed just two weeks after they started dating. After that first year, they made it a tradition to spend a few days each summer on Short Sands, taking pictures in front of one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country. Richie managed to find a secluded cove down by the ocean in front of Nubble Lighthouse to ask Rachel to spend forever with him on the most perfect sunny day in May.
“The Mansion at Bald Hill was the first and only venue they considered for their wedding location.” Rachel and Richie purchase their first home about a month after their engagement, and they wanted ample time to focus on both their new home and planning their wedding. They decided on a year and a half engagement so that planning would not be rushed and they could enjoy the process. That year and a half engagement allowed the couple to pick the perfect location . . . right in their own hometown. They wanted their friends to see the beautiful town where they had chosen to start their life as husband and continued on page 36 www.bridegroommag.com

wife together. Richie came home one day and told Rachel that while he was driving around town, he had found the perfect spot to get married. The Mansion at Bald Hill was the first and only venue they considered for their wedding location. It embodied all of the details that they loved so much about Woodstock—the small town charm, the beautiful scenery, and the rich history. The couple imagined an outside ceremony, and the old style English garden at The Mansion would provide the perfect backdrop. It checked off every box they had for the perfect venue. Rachel and Richie felt it was important that their nuptials should include the classic elements of a wedding, and also reflect who they are as a couple. Their wedding style centered around simple, timeless elegance. Classic wedding colors—black and white—were featured and the “garden” element was brought through with pops of green. Rachel and her mother made macramé plant hangers for beautiful hanging plants they had been growing in their homes since the engagement and hanging vintage doilies they had collected to convey a fun vintage bohemian vibe that perfectly describes Rachel’s personal style. To add some more creative flare, they also used old windows from the barn on Rachel’s grandmother property where she grew up, built in 1901, for their seating chart. Shine Wedding Invitations created their invitations and programs, and the couple fell in love with the company’s options for formal invitations and beautiful high-quality fonts and stationery. The cake was also a special feature as it was made by a dear friend who Rachel had worked for ten years before, helping to deliver wedding cakes to other brides. She had dreamed of having her friend design and create a wedding cake for her one day, and it was time for her wish to come true. Chef Alina Eisenhauer of Sweet Bakery in Worcester, MA, created a four-tiered white masterpiece, with chocolate cake and peanut butter buttercream frosting.
36 Spring 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
Looking back on their special day, Rachel and Richie agreed that their “first look” was one of the most memorable moments of their wedding day. It was important for them to spend time together, just the two of them, to celebrate their wedding day without distractions. Rachel was very excited for Richie to see her as a bride, and the moment was captured beautifully by their photographers. The best advice Rachel and Richie can give other brides and grooms is to “remain focused on what you and your partner value. If it is the venue, or a religious ceremony, or the attire—or none of the material aspects at all—as long as you remain focused on what is important to the two of you, you’ll be happy.”

Lash Out
Open Your Eyes to the Wonder of Lash Extensions by Stacey Marcus
Long before celebrities like Kim Kardashian donned lash extensions and women opened their eyes to the wonder of enhancing their eyelashes, Nicole Yebba was being trained in the fine art of creating custom lash extensions. She later created the Beauty Secrets technique and brand. 38 Spring 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
Yebba is a firm believer in the wonders of lash extensions and how they can make you look and feel a decade younger without having to go through any type of surgery. The goal is to look natural and bright— two elements you definitely want for your wedding day and photos. “Lash extensions are a must for brides! At Beauty Secrets we will customize your extensions to create the perfect look, making your eyes bigger and brighter. Lash extensions are the perfect lift, giving you a natural enhancement without any makeup,” says Yebba, who is certified and offers training at her Charlestown studio. She stresses that customization is the key to success for designing lash extensions, and she takes into account the shape of a client’s eye and whether she is looking for volume or length when crafting a custom look. Yebba notes that the most important thing for a bride to consider when looking for a place to have lash extensions applied is to find a technician who is certified and who has experience, a good reputation, and a safe and clean work space. Lash extensions are placed one by one on each eye. Yebba notes that most people have about 150 lashes per eye, but says that everyone is different. She begins with a consultation to analyze each client’s needs and then designs a custom look. The lash extensions last between six to eight weeks. Clients usually come in every two to five weeks for maintenance but can also get an appointment sooner if they need a little touch-up. A lot of the maintenance depends on both how perfect the client wants her lashes to look and how well she takes care of them. Along with synthetic fibers, brides can select faux mink lashes to create softness and texture, add a pop of color to create drama and highlight, or choose from different curls. Brides looking to add extra sparkle can add a genuine Swarovski crystal. “Lash extensions are a natural enhancement of your face and create beautiful photos,” says Yebba. With their sweeping views of nature, gorgeous architecture, and extensive on-site facilities, which can include everything from golf to tennis to lap pools, country clubs are a popular option for wedding-minded couples. At the same time, there seems to be some lingering confusion about this option. Is club membership required to get married at a club? Aren’t clubs stuffy and overly concerned about things like dress codes? We talked to a couple of New England wedding specialists and asked them to clear up these questions and others that concern country club venues: First, what are the advantages of having your wedding at a country club? Jaclyn Watson, owner of Vermont-based JW Events, says a key advantage is the all-inclusive factor. “Oftentimes, they’ll have
golfing onsite, you’ll have different activities throughout the day. Depending on what country club you choose, you could have accommodations onsite, and various dining options onsite, so it’s all-in-one.” Most clubs can also accommodate groups large and small, offer both indoor and outdoor event spaces, and reassuringly, have plenty of experience hosting events. A lot of clubs also provide another fantastic perk: a wedding coordinator. Alyssa Friedman is a case in point. Event coordinator at the Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, MA, Friedman says the club’s in-house catering is helmed by an experienced chef (who even does wedding cakes) and she can hook you up for anything that the club doesn’t handle in-house (e.g., florals or photos). “We have vendors that we have good relationships with.” continued on page 44

Finally, New England’s country clubs offer spectacular backdrops for wedding photography. Friedman says, “We have great views of not only the golf club, but the reservoir, and in the fall the foliage is breathtaking.” Do you have to be a member to have your wedding at a country club? Watson says no and explains that many country clubs make their event spaces open to the public. “It’s not memberexclusive at all.” Can you hold your ceremony at a club, too? Yes. Friedman says about half of the couples she works with at Wachusett CC hold their ceremonies right at the club. In Vermont, Watson says most weddings she sees hold both ceremonies and receptions on club grounds. “Everything is so beautiful right there. So you’re able to get married by a lake, in a garden, or maybe in a little gazebo. Again it brings you back to that all-inclusive aspect.” Aren’t there lots of rules and restrictions at country clubs? Yes and no. While clubs often have dress codes, wedding guests shouldn’t feel too restricted by, for example, a “no jeans” policy since they’re dressing up anyway, says Watson. At Wachusett CC, Friedman says, “If you’re golfing here, proper golf 44 Spring 2017

attire is something we do have a dress code for, but if you’re coming in for something to eat in the pub, we don’t have a dress code.” In terms of other restrictions, Watson says clubs may require you to meet a minimum food and beverage amount. And clubs that offer accommodations may require a minimum booking as well. Finally, Friedman says her club has a few rules about where guests can and cannot wander. “We really keep them right around the building, we don’t let them venture off to certain parts of the course... And they’re not allowed to go on the actual greens because most of the time women are wearing heels and those two don’t go together too well.” But as for being country clubs being stuffy, Watson says, “I don’t think that’s the case at all.” She says clubs can range from elegant to quaint to casual, and advises couples to visit a few different clubs to find their perfect fit. “I think there are multiple country clubs out there that represent each type of personality.” Connie Jeske Crane is a full-time freelance writer and reports frequently on weddings, parenting, sustainability, and social media. You can visit her at www.conniejeskecrane.com.
Booking a country club venue? Here are some questions to ask the event coordinator: • Is club membership required to rent the venue? • Do dress codes apply in dining rooms or on the golf course, tennis courts, etc.? • What services are included? • Will a service charge be applied to the bill? • Does the club have preferred vendors for services not provided? • Is there a food and beverage minimum? • If the club has accommodations, is there an accommodation minimum? • For outdoor activities, what is the rain backup plan? • Are there club areas that are off limits to wedding guests? • Are there any restrictions regarding wedding photography?

10 Ways to Add Some
Country Club Style to Your Wedding by Connie Jeske Crane
i
f you’re holding your big day at a
country club and want to add a dash of country club style, you have a lot of options. As Jaclyn Watson of JW Events in Vermont told us, there’s no one specific way to go: “There are lots of country clubs that are extremely, extremely elegant,” but Watson says New England clubs might also be rustic, intimate, or sport-focused. Look at your venue for some style cues to start, and then take the country club vibe in the direction you prefer—whether it’s stylishly retro, preppy, or golf-inspired. Here are a few takes on this style to consider:

1. Customized Flasks
or Martini Shakers
Another great traditional option for wedding party gifts. Engraved with special details such as your wedding date and a golf motif, these items become personal keepsakes. You can also find versions with plaid or argyle designs that match your design scheme.
2. Retro Cocktails You’ve got the perfect setting, so serving up some classic country club cocktails is a rather fabulous idea. The Arnold Palmer is a must. Named after the renowned American golfer, this tall cool blend of iced tea and lemonade can be livened up with spirits like vodka or bourbon. Other choices might include the Country Club Cooler, Mint Julep, and Long Island Iced Tea. For more inspiration, visit Mr. Boston’s Official Bartender’s Guide.
3. Golf Ball Cake Pops Want to add a playful twist? Subtly patterned white cake pops can reference your theme and make pretty favors for your guests. Order through local vendors such as Pop Culture Cake Pops in Berkley, MA, or LW Sweets in Charlton, MA. Or, if you’re a fan of DIY projects, purchase custom candy molds online as an affordable and creative alternative.

4. Personalized Golf Balls
and Golf Tees
Golf balls and tees, customized with your names and wedding date, are another subtle nod to the country club theme. Personalized golf ball markers and divot tools could work well here, too. Use these items as favors, gifts, or little décor touches. And if you’re including a round of golf during your wedding weekend, you can hand them out to party members. What better way to mark the occasion? Shop High Point Gifts in Kingston, NH, or Mass Bay Trading in Weston, MA.
5. Golf Lessons Want to build your confidence before that wedding weekend golf game? Or would you like to thank your groomsmen for their support? Golf lessons from PGA-certified pros are a thoughtful solution. Many clubs in the area offer gift certificates for rounds of golf (as well as golf gear). Try: CityGolf Boston, or search the PGA’s site under “Massachusetts Golf Instructors.”
6. Argyle Socks For the men in your wedding party, argyle socks not only fit the country club theme, they add a preppy pop of color as well. Choose socks that match your scheme and be sure to have your photographer get a close-up of this fashion statement. See: BoldSOCKS, The Sock Drawer, The Tie Bar, and more.
52 Spring 2017

7. Traditional Jewelry For the groom, silver golf-ball cufflinks balance tradition and whimsy (See Nordstrom online). For the bride, a string of pearls is the epitome of preppy country club style. If you want to take it further, consider extending the motif to other aspects—a gift of jewelry for the bridesmaids, or consider adding bling to your invitations or a wedding cake swathed in pearl fondant and silvery pearls.
8. Boston Scally Cap Here’s a stylish gift for your golf-loving groomsmen, or maybe a little pre-wedding gift for the groom. Last year, the PGA listed the Boston Scally herringbone flat cap among its top holiday gift picks for golfers. To view the original, along with other available styles, shop online at Boston Scally Company.
9. Custom Cake Designs Whether you’re aiming for sophistication or a bit of fun, the cake is a great place to start when you want to define your style. Boston’s Oakleaf Cakes for example, can deliver a breathtaking four-tiered masterpiece with painted green foliage that subtly references the outdoors. This bakery also offers quirky golf-themed groom’s cakes. oakleafcakes.com
10. Golf Carts Finally, golf venues often allow couples to use golf carts so they can depart their venue in style. This makes for a great photo op, and for extra fun, toss a “Just Married” sign on the back of the cart, and ask if you can decorate your ride with raffia, streamers, or flowers. One local venue that supplies golf carts for weddings is the Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, MA.

ast year, savvy brides spent their wedding funds on great food. Catering was named the most expensive wedding service, so save your pennies so you can order up a delectable menu at your reception. The other most costly wedding services were those of live bands, photography and videography, flowers, and wedding planning, in that order.

Are you thinking of having a sit-down catered affair? You might want to think twice. In 2016, 52% of wedding meals were served from a buffet. Nowadays, chefs and wedding planners can organize all kinds of buffets and stations to make your wedding feast all the more memorable. Why not plan something truly special like a chocolate dessert station? And while you’re at it, select a three-tiered cake—among brides, it’s the number-one choice. Have you selected your song yet for your first dance? About 95% of couples who learn to dance for their weddings are beginners, so don’t worry if all you can do is the foxtrot. And speaking of wedding songs, we hear that John Legend’s “All of Me” is currently very popular. Want to save a few dollars? Learn from example: Last year, 74% of couples re-used their ceremony flowers for the reception. This is very smart wedding planning since most couples are on a budget. While you’ll want to request that your photographer take some formal shots, follow the advice of other brides: Candid photographs are the height of style right now. Talk to your

fiancé and plan out some of unique and innovative photos you can take, incorporating some of your favorite things. You’ll be thrilled with the creative results. Wedding makeup and hairstyles are also very important. More than 75% of brides use false eyelashes, and if they’re not doing that, chances are they’ve started to use special eyelash serums months ahead of the wedding to make their lashes grow longer . And if you want to make the “BestTressed List” at your own wedding, pay attention to your hair. An up-do with loose curls is one of the most popular bridal hairstyles, followed by hairdos that are half up/half down, and all down and curled. If you’re a social media maven, you’re in luck. Last year 68% of couples opted for short highlight videos that they could post on social media, so make sure to update your Facebook account! Last but not least, be thankful that you live in the Boston area. New York was named the most expensive city in which to hire a wedding professional, followed by Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Providence. Honeymoons Celebrating Love and Links by Stacey Marcus

Couples looking to combine celebrating their nuptials with a few rounds of golf will adore the course of a honeymoon in Kiawah Island in South Carolina, or Sanibel and Captiva Islands in Florida. Both destinations combine romance, nature, beaches, and a plethora of outdoor activities that feature the game of golf—and so much more.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina “Few destinations in the world can match Kiawah Island as a honeymoon destination,” says Mike Vegis, public relations director for Kiawah Island Golf Resort. “The resort offers ninety holes of championship golf including the famed Ocean Course, site of the dramatic 1991 ‘War by the Shore’ Ryder Cup and the 2012 PGA Championship. It will also host the 2021 PGA Championship. Its other courses, designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Fazio, and Clyde Johnston, provide a wide variety of course selection,” says Vegis. “And, when honeymooners get tired of playing golf, the resort offers world-class tennis, ten miles of private beach—named by Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) as one of the top-ten beaches in the U.S., eighteen dining outlets, a Forbes five-star oceanfront hotel with a Forbes five-star spa, and an award-winning nature and recreation program offering everything from tours to kayaking, paddle boarding, and surfing. All of this just twenty-one miles from beautiful and historic Charleston, South Carolina.”

Honeymoon Highlights: • The island features more than thirty-five miles of bike trails. In addition, the beach is hard packed allowing biking on the beach, which gives couples a great opportunity to get away privately without a car. • There’s a great connection with nature on the island. One aspect of the original land plan of the island takes the natural environment into account, something that is still very strongly adhered to. The resort has numerous nature and recreation tours, from dolphin-watching cruises to kayaking and paddle boarding to gator tours and bird-watching.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida The unspoiled shores of Sanibel Island and Captiva Island offer the perfect setting for a romantic honeymoon in Southwest Florida,” says Francesca Donlan, communications director for the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau. “The area also offers great golf courses,” for couples who want to play a few holes and enjoy some amazing scenery. Couples will adore playing nine holes at Captiva Course at South Seas Island Resort, where the nine-hole golf course is pristinely maintained and affords picturesque scenery along the Gulf of Mexico. Ranked as one of the top-five short courses in the world, it’s a perfect place for couples who enjoy golf to fit in a short game before indulging in some island fun. 66 Spring 2017

Honeymoon Highlights: • Pamper yourselves with a relaxing couples massage at Kat Casperson Spa at South Seas Island Resort. • Experience bird-watching and a tram tour of the J. Add it to your honeymoon/bridal registry. lebristolparis.com/eng/gastronomy/114-faubourg See it all with the Paris Pass The two-day Paris Pass (122E) offers forty-eight hours of unlimited Paris Métro use, the ability to ride on the hop-on-hop-off bus, free entry to most museums (including Opera Garnier and Musée d’Orsay), and in some cases, upgraded quick entry into museums and attractions. Hold hands and steal a kiss whenever you can. parispass.com/how-it-works Discover the spa at the Majestic At the MAJ Spa, you can delight in a facial of Matis products, made in right there om France. For 100 euros, for example, you can enjoy the “Initial” treatment, which consists of a cleansing, gommage, exfoliation, and application of serum and mask. There’s a stunning indoor pool along with a workout area where you can exercise before your treatments, and there’s even a steam room. eshotelsbaverez.com/en/home/majestic-hotel-spa Elaine Sense
