European Wax Center “Walk in,
Strut Out”
B&G
q&a
by Jennifer McNally Monac
European Wax Center (EWC) has 411 locations nationwide, and nine right here in the Bay State, but currently, only one is located in Central Mass and it is owned an operated by a unique woman with a very unique story to tell. We sat down with Terri Radley of European Wax Center in Westborough, asking her to bare all about waxing and how she made a smooth transition, leaving behind a prickily career past, to now creating one that empowers her mission to enhance, beautify and support women. Here’s what she had to say...
Owner Terri Radley

q: I understand European Wax Centers
• Ingrown Hair Serum ($25) – has tea tree oil and lavender oil to prevent ingrown hairs • Calming Cream ($17) – has aloe for calming irritated skin and reducing redness • Gel Exfoliate ($38) – uses pineapple and papaya extract to remove dead skin to leave only softness behind. We also have an entire line of products to enhance the eyebrows: • Brow Powders – unique shades to fill in and enhance brows • Shape-It – alcohol free to shape/tame brows for all day hold • Restore-It – helps brows grow!
are independently owned franchises. What made you decide to be a part of this particular aspect of the beauty industry as a franchisee?
a : For more than 25 years my career
was in the legal field working as a Law Firm Administrator running the business of the law firms. I grew increasingly unhappy with how the legal field was evolving and I found my one time enthusiasm for the profession waning. Much of my recent years were spent working with lawyers doing divorce and family law. I found myself in the unenviable position of having to collect money from women who were going through the worst time in their lives. I was working at a firm in Norwood and found the Dedham European Wax Center. And I loved the experience! I could book online. I could get a reservation last minute. It was quick, clean and efficient too! One day I started talking to the manager of that location at the front desk and she suggested I look into a franchise opportunity. Then I saw the slogan on the door “Walk in, Strut out,” and that was it! I was done beating up my own gender and decided to make a life change to do something to enhance, beautify and support women instead! We opened our doors on July 17, 2014 and I haven’t looked back.
q: Wow, your story is inspirational!
In addition to what you bring to the table, what exactly sets European Wax Center apart from other salons?
• Women can choose from a bikini line, eyebrow, or underarm wax. • Men can receive a complimentary eyebrow, ear, or nose wax.
q: So,
you service both women and men at European Wax Center. What’s the ratio?
a:
Our guests are 75% women and 25% men.
q: That’s great, are all of your employees aestheticians?
a : Yes, absolutely!
All of my wax specialists are licensed with the State and have completed a 600 hour program, or more with an accredited school. In addition, all wax specialists complete a 7 day in-house training program at European Wax Center to immerse themselves in the procedures, products and culture of EWC.
Tell us about the special products a : Waxing at other places (nail salons q: and services available at European Wax
or hair salons) is a secondary service. At EWC we don’t call ourselves a salon... rather a waxing center. Waxing is all we do and we are experts in the field. We use an exclusive Comfort Wax™ which is a hard wax – 100% bee’s wax from Europe. At European Wax Center, our guests are our first priority. We strive to accommodate their preferences, goals, time and budget. New guests are able to receive their first wax with us absolutely free!
Center.
a : We have an entire line of products
designed to enhance the waxing experience. All of our products are reasonably priced with the most expensive product being $38. • Body Wash ($20) - the body lotion has jojoba beads for gentle everyday exfoliation • Body Lotion ($20) – film free to cleanse the skin never leaving residue behind
q: Do you ever schedule whole bridal parties?
a:
I would love to schedule wedding parties! We can set aside a special time for the wedding party to come together to have exclusive access to the wax center, including appetizers and mock-cocktails. It will be fun!
q: Speaking
of fun, has anyone ever asked you wax them in a fun shape? Do tell!
a:
Let’s just say, the Wax Center is a fun place, but I don’t wax and tell. Jennifer McNally Monac is a freelance writer and real estate agent, who lives and works on Cape Cod.

Lindsay and Michael May 24, 2014 Salem Cross Inn
Their Story It all started on a farm. Michael Manning and Lindsay Manning first met at Randall’s Farm in Ludlow, MA. Lindsay spent her time scooping ice cream while Michael worked on the farm. Working in close corners brought the two together, and it was destined from there. Michael put in a lot of time on making sure the proposal went perfectly. Michael designed the ring and had it delivered to his parents’ house where he was living. He tricked his soon to be fiancé and said he was waiting for a delivery of car parts for his brother. Unfortunately, Lindsay was with him that day and they ended up missing the delivery of the package. Michael was so upset; it turned out the door bell did not work. After many attempts of contacting FedEx they were able to get the delivery to the house a few hours later. Michael knew he had some ground to cover so he suggested they grab lunch and go to a local reservoir site. But he had other plans in mind.
22 Winter 2015
BRIDE&GROOM
Instead of heading toward the reservoir, he pulled into the driveway of a house they just put an offer in for. He said, “I want to see how the sunset looks from the front porch.” After they finished their lunch, Michael led Lindsay to the porch in an attempt to distract her. He pointed out minor flaws in the porch and a wind chime. When Lindsay turned back around, Michael was down on one knee with a ring in hand. Michael said, “I am not sure if this house is going to work out, but I know this is what I want to do with you. Will you marry me?” After some tears and laughing and of course accepting his proposal, Michael revealed that all day they were not tracking down a car part, but rather this engagement ring.
Planning The couple got engaged on January 26, 2013 and began the planning process right away in February. It took around 18 months to finish the process but it was worth it. The process got a little overwhelming at times. With the passing of Lindsay’s mother just a few years earlier, it made it quite an emotional experience. But Lindsay’s girlfriends, godmother, mother in law and father in law turned her experience into a positive one.
Details Michael and Lindsay chose to wed at Elms College Chapel. Lindsay had attended nursing school at Elms College so it was a perfect and sentimental venue. The couple wanted a cozy, barn setting for their reception. An intimate backyard wedding with a rustic feel was their ideal theme. The Salem Cross Inn fit perfectly into this inspiration. The overall wedding had a rustic charm theme in which was seen all throughout the wedding. They had a distressed chalk board that Lindsay made from an old mirror with information from the wedding along with cute sayings & fonts. jars lined the reception tables. Michael and Lindsay even tied in old wedding photographs of both their parents, grandparents & great grandparents in vintage frames. Flowers bloomed in antique mason jars and on hand cut runners of burlap on the tables with DIY table numbers with lace & wooden numbers. This couple thought of everything from the wooden hand painted props at the photo booth to the bridal gifts wrapped in burlap and twine. They even had mason jars set up for donations that went to a breast cancer foundation called Rays of Hope in memory of Lindsay’s mother, raising nearly $900. The rest of the wedding was spent devouring their delicious spice cake with buttercream frosting roughly frosted on the edges with flowers matching the bouquets & centerpieces to complete the rustic look. After devouring came the dancing! Michael & Lindsay had planned their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s “The way you look tonight”. They danced in private for about 5 months with Lindsay’s childhood dance teacher Deb Bednarz who choreographed the dance. Only Lindsay’s father knew about the dance, which was completed with waltzing and some great lifts & dips. 24 Winter 2015

Advice “If you have a do-it-yourself décor at the reception, have friends designated for a “clean-up crew” ”. Lindsay, Michael and their families had to carry out the chalk board, shutters, etc. at the end of the reception and had to find people at the last minute to get things into their cars because they did not have their own. “You don’t want to stress at the end of your fun time!”.

Christen and Wade July 19, 2014 White Cliffs Country Club Their Story Instead of love at first site, the story between Christen and Wade Zawatsky was accusation at first site. The couple met their sophomore year at the University of Rhode Island. Christen returned to her dorm room one day to find her laptop missing and was furious. She heard through the grapevine that the suspected thief was a redhead and she accused the closest one to her, which just so happened to be Wade. He was shocked anyone suspected him of ever taking something from anyone, but the accusation caught his interest. Wade asked her on a date shortly after, and their relationship blossomed. Note: they’re both redheads! 26 Winter 2015
BRIDE&GROOM
Growing up, Christen spent her summers visiting Nantucket with her family. She has such a connection with the island and when the couple planned a weekend away to her favorite place she was thrilled. One day they were walking around the scenic Lilly Pond, Wade turned to Christen, kneeled down on one knee and told her that “He had always known that I was the girl for him.
Planning After their precious proposal on June 8, 2013, Christen and Wade eagerly started making plans right away. At the beginning of the planning process, Christen was still in shock, it was all a dream. She enjoyed the picking of the venue and shopping for the dress. She then grew overwhelmed with invitations and the little details. But her family was tremendously helpful through each step of the way. Her father was in a band so he was a huge part of the band and music continued on page 28

selection process. Christens two sisters served as her maid of honors. One is a New England Patriots Cheerleader and the other a professional model, so her makeup artist and photographer were found easily.
Details With the couples love for the beach, a seaside wedding was a must. Sand dollars were used as the place card settings, and the ceremony and reception were filled with beautiful hydrangeas. The cake was decorated with white chocolate sea shells and dusted with light brown sugar to represent the sand. The desert table was a huge focus with a large ice sculpture of an anchor bringing in the attention of the guests. The couple enjoyed their big day at the childhood summer home, on the beach Christen spent many years swimming, and looking for seashells. The theme was something very sentimental to the couple after the countless years by the water. Christen and wade even got to enjoy see-
ing Christens father take the stage with the band and play the rendition of Mustang Sally just for them.
Advice “Be true to yourself. It’s YOUR day”. Whether it be small or large, summer or fall, nautical or heart themed, it has to be special to you. Christen and Wade definitely made their wedding as unique and sentimental to their desired taste. Most importantly, just enjoy your day!

Kristina and Derek April 11, 2014 DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Milford, MA Their Story Kristina Wirth and Derek Ferreira first met at a pub in the buzzing city of Providence while out with friends. Kristina immediately had an interest in Derek and after a few months of their initial meeting she got the chance to see him again. She took the opportunity to invite him to an air show the following day. They spent the next day sitting in hours of traffic laughing the whole time. From then on she just knew he was the one. The engagement had two parts. Typically the couple carpool to work and usually when he comes to pick Kristina up, she is nowhere near prepared to leave the classroom.
30 Winter 2015
BRIDE&GROOM
So, Derek’s first plan was to pick Kristina up, wait in her classroom, and when she inevitably left to make photocopies, he would write “Will you marry me?” on the board, and be on one knee when she returned. But of course, the day Derek planned to do this, she was ready to leave on time. The couple then went out to dinner and on their way home, Derek asked if she wanted to go for a walk around the pond at their complex. Kristina agreed and was surprised when he had slowed down, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him in front of a gorgeous gazebo.
Planning The couple took a little over 12 months to plan their big day. Kristina is a teacher so it was crucial to fit in their honeymoon during a school vacation. They settled on April before the hot weather would kick in. Kristina primarily planned the wedding but she enjoyed the fact that Derek and both families came together to help plan their special day. continued on page 32

Details Kristina lost her mother to pancreatic cancer just three months before their wedding. It was important to the couple to make sure her presence was felt during that day. Kristina wore her mother’s necklace, and on her right hand she wore the ring her father bought her mother the day Kristina was born. Her cousin Molly also made charms for her bouquet that had photos of her mother, grandmother and grandfather. The couple also dedicated a memory table for those from both families that could not be with them on their big day. All of the calligraphy was done by Kristina herself. From the save-the-dates to the invitations were all personally hand crafted. She also spent some time to create DIY table numbers. They had decided on 11 tables and found pictures from each age of each other to place on the tables. What a personable touch! All of the guests were raving about how beautiful and intimate the ceremony was. The couple really wanted to focus on involving all of their family and guests into the ceremony. One of the most unforgettable moments of their wedding day was when they finally said their vows. “The whole ceremony flew by but that moment kind of froze in time”. 32 Winter 2015
BRIDE&GROOM
Advice Kristina felt that during her planning process it helped to create checklists and space out your “to-do’s”. Tackling a task each week with the help of friends and family was one thing that really helped to seem the process move a lot smoother for the couple. Kristina’s last piece of advice was to “let it go” if something goes wrong on the day of. Stressing will just make the situation worse. Take a breather, and simply enjoy the day of celebration as a married couple.

long with the myriad decisions couples have to consider for their wedding and beyond, this debate was a point that couples felt they had to negotiate. There is much folklore about the origin of this ritual ranging from good luck to fertility and dominance, but some couples today are opting out of the traditional cake. What would a wedding be without the traditional cake-in-the-face ending? Here are some deliciously inventive ideas!

At Hidden Pond, a luxury resort in Kennebunkport, Maine, one couple decided to opt instead for made maple sugar cotton candy, caramel corn, vanilla and chocolate milk shakes and apple cider doughnuts. “It is always fun to work with clients who want to do something a bit out of the box and special for their wedding. It lets us explore our creative side and pushes us to expand our boundaries to make something that not only delights guests, but leaves a lasting impression. You’ll remember the wedding with the cotton candy for dessert, but maybe not the traditional wedding cake, ” says Danielle Walker, General Manager (and wife of Chef Justin Walker). At Brooklyn Winery, the urban winery in Williamsburg, which doubles as a popular wedding venue on the weekends, the team provides a spread of three mini dessert bites, as an alternative to a traditional cake. It is presented with beautifully appointed antiques and candles and accompanied by coffee and tea service. The idea is to provide guests with a quick sweet treat that won’t take away from their dancing reception. As an enhancement to the set menu, Brooklyn Winery offers a special ice cream options from local ice creamery Luca & Bosco including Boozy Ice Cream Floats and an Ice Cream Sundae Bar. Additionally, at Wolfgang Puck Caterers, which has a strong clientele in the Boston market, has a number of unexpected wedding dessert options, that provide a playful touch during that portion of a reception.

Finding the Perfect Fit by Jamie Santa Cruz
T
he hunt for the perfect dress is often one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding. But the search can also be intimidating, especially for fuller-figured brides, who sometimes worry they won’t be able to find great dresses in their size. To help you navigate the search, here’s the plus-size bride’s guide to finding the perfect fit.
Starting the search When you’re browsing online for dress ideas, look for designers who cater especially to fuller-figured women. “They’re going to have that structure built in that feels good,” says Kelly Michalczyk, co-owner of Elizabeth Ann’s Bridal Boutique in Auburn, MA. For example, one of the lines she and her daughter, Jaclyn Asquith McGreevy, carry in their shop is Callista, which starts at a size 16 and goes up from there. “When it’s made for a fullerfigured bride, [you’re] going to tell the difference when [you] put it on,” says Michalczyk. If you fall in the plus-size range, you’ll likely discover that some stores don’t stock samples larger than a 16 or 18, says Michalczyk. But don’t be discouraged: there are plenty of shops—both bigger stores and boutiques—that do have plus sizes in the store. The key: just call around to various shops and ask what they have for plus-size brides.
Style guide Once you get to the store, keep an open mind on styles to try. If you’re fuller-figured, you might assume that certain dress shapes are out for you, but don’t be too quick to rule out options. Fitted dresses and ball gowns, for example, might seem like a no-go for plus-size, but McGreevy and Michalczyk have dressed plus-size brides in both styles with great results. “A bride’s a bride’s a bride,” says Michalczyk. “People will put a curvy bride in a certain box. We don’t believe in that.” Of course, there will be certain dresses that look more or less flattering on your particular body, but the important factor to consider is not your overall dress size but your body shape: are you heavier on top, heavier on bottom, or evenly proportioned? continued on page 40 Top: Provence by Callista 4234 Callistabride.com

For example, says Susan Krasinskas, owner of Bella’s Bridal Boutique in Worcester, MA, if you’re fuller on the bottom, you’ll likely find that empire waist or A-line dresses are a good bet. On the other hand, if you’re fuller on top, a ball gown or a dress with a full skirt can be flattering. Look for a dropped waist, says McGreevy, which will help accentuate your curves. Regardless of your body type, all our consultants agree that ruched styles are ideal for fuller-figured brides. Another great choice, no matter your shape? Corsets, which allow you to cinch your dress up in just the right places for a perfect fit. But all these style pointers are just general guides, and the biggest key to finding a great fit is to experiment with a variety of dresses. “You tried on lace, let’s try satin,” McGreevy says to her brides. “You’re not sure about satin, but sometimes you don’t know unless you put it on.”
Making the most of the experience Besides being flexible about style, there are a few other things you can do to up your odds of a happy dress-shopping experience. For starters, try to bring your own undergarments. “SPANX and a long-line bra are what most brides will end up wearing on the wedding day,” says Krasinskas, “and to get a good idea of what the dress is going to look like, it’s best to have those with you.” Final tip: trust the consultant at the bridal shop. McGreevy and Michalczyk always try to listen first to the vision a bride has for herself, but if they see that things aren’t falling together the way the bride envisioned, they’ll suggest a different direction. “Walk in and be open minded,” recommends McGreevy. Jamie Santa Cruz is a freelance writer based in New York City.
Tips for a plus-sized bridal party • Choose a style and fabric that are not too clingy or showy across the middle, says McGreevy. (Even smaller-sized bridesmaids will often appreciate this!) For example, try a ruche waist or a style in a flowy fabric like chiffon. • Better yet: allow some flexibility. Decide on a specific color for the dresses, suggests McGreevy, but allow each bridesmaid to select a dress style suited to her body type.

ive music has been the hallmark of weddings and festive celebrations for centuries, and while many couples choose a DJ who can bring the fast pace and convenience of digital music to the dance floor, nothing, argue many, can top the experience and enthusiasm of a live, multi-piece band.

Ultimately, when guests and the bride and groom reflect on a wedding, it’s about their experience, which is often in the hands of the entertainment.
There are typically three parts of a wedding where music plays a key role: the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. If marrying in a church, you may be required to work with musicians recommended by the administration. This may be a blessing in disguise as referred/recommended musicians are usually most familiar with the acoustics and audio capabilities of the church. If you have carte blanche to bring in any musicians you like, typically they will want to arrange a time to visit the church, meet the Musical Director or regular cantor and familiarize themselves familiar with the acoustics, amplification and audio capabilities in the space. Singer/songwriter Jennie Backstrom of Worcester is accustomed to performing at both church and secular ceremonies. “My first love is always singing ballads and ceremony music,” she says. “Usually they have their own cantor at a church but sometimes it’s not the style the bride and groom want, so I’ll work with maybe the cantor, and they’ll do the prayers and I’ll do the Ave Maria and How Great Thou Art. I’ll work with organist and musical director, and I will get the music if [the church] doesn’t have it.” Backstrom, who is multi-lingual, is also happy to learn a song for a couple if she doesn’t already know it. “I had a bride who wanted me to honor her mother’s heritage and sing a song in Spanish,” she says. “I have an ear for languages so I listened to the song over and over and over and it was really special to them. What I love about singing is my flexibility and making a song what they really want. “I really try to do whatever
it is the bride and groom want,” she says earnestly. Moreover, Backstrom says there’s just that human element, that human connection, which only a live singer can conjure. “People tell me ‘Your voice made my wedding’ or that I made people cry. It evokes an emotion with live music. You can really see the people performing and baring their soul.” Backstom, who can also play piano and guitar, relies on fellow musicians if a bride and groom would like a more comprehensive sound. “If they want a piano player I can bring in an accompanist; a harpist, keyboardist, guitarist. I have a network,” she says. The singer has also performed with friends of family members of the couple—that just takes little more organization. Another benefit of working with live musicians for the ceremony, particularly at a secular site like an outdoor venue, adds Chris Troxell, director of Everett-based Cover Story Entertainment, is that professional musicians like the ones he works with can set up wireless microphones for your officiant with a state of the art sound system. This ensures all guests can hear your commitment to one another without missing a word. continued on page 44 www.bridegroommag.com

Troxell says most of Cover Story’s wedding packages include five hours of entertainment: live music throughout cocktail hour, acoustic music or a DJ during dinner, and 2-3 dance sets. “Typically there are five of us on stage, though we sound like a six or seven piece band,” he says. Should the bride and groom prefer, Cover Story can expand to as many as nine musicians, which may include, for example, a horn section. But Troxell says five is usually the magic number as larger bands require ample space. “When you start getting bigger, the client starts to worry about room,” he explains. Averaging 50-60 weddings annually, Cover Story is in demand as each band member is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music. “It comes down to the energy and live songs and interaction with the crowd.” To make sure your favorite songs make the set list, talk to your band well before you wedding and provide a list—and be sure to include a “do not play” list if the idea of hearing the “Chicken Dance” or “YMCA” makes you cringe. For couples on a strict budget who also want a live band at their wedding, Troxell advises re-evaluating where other dollars are going. Ultimately, when guests and the bride and groom reflect on a wedding, it’s about their experience, which is often in the hands of the entertainment. Andrea E. he Woo’s urban landscape, like any culturally diverse city, is full of gems both hidden and illustrious. That same diversity is also reflected in Worcester’s wedding venues—many of which have hidden gems of their own. Mechanics Hall, Coral Seafood, the Worcester Art Museum, and the Beechwood Hotel each represent a facet of the city’s history, culture, and top-notch food scene. Mechanics Hall Mechanics Hall, built in 1857 by Worcester’s burgeoning industrialists, is an elegant Main Street space that’s both beautiful and versatile. As a full-service venue for ceremonies, receptions, and pre- and post-wedding parties, the hall can host an intimate affair for 50 or a grand gala for 500. The space is undoubtedly one of the city’s most refined architectural wonders. Majestic red-carpeted staircases lead to the Great Hall on the third floor, which features a richly decorated coffered ceiling, Corinthian pilasters, and a balustrade balcony. 48 Winter 2015
BRIDE&GROOM
The Great Hall can be used for both ceremonies and receptions; when ceremonies take place, guests enjoy a brief reception in Washburn Hall on the second level (and the bridal party in a private room) while the Great Hall is transformed from chapel-style to a space for full reception. The facility has any number of stunning bridal photography options: on the grand staircases, at the pedestal of the magnificent Hook Organ, in the Washburn or Waldo lobbies, and on the balcony of the Great Hall.
Mechanics Hall
Organ Pipes at Mechanics Hall
Mechanics Hall emphasizes attention to detail, thanks to a professional and awardwinning staff, as well as to the bride and groom. Unlike many wedding facilities, no other events are booked on a wedding day. Public Relations Manager Kathleen Gagne notes that the staff “will do whatever we can to make [the bridal couple] happy. If a couple asks for something we’ve never done before, we’ll find a way to accommodate”. The Mechanics Hall staff is also knowledgeable and very flexible regarding family and ethnic traditions, says Gagne. Choice and customization are at the heart of a Mechanics Hall wedding day. Couples may select their own caterer and other vendors, which means they can put their personal touch on everything from menu to accent décor—on whatever budget suits them. When asked which memories the wedding coordinator and crew hope the couples and their guests to walk away with, Gagne answers with an evocative description: “Magical elegance and fairy-tale happiness.” continued on page 50

The Worcester Art Museum
Worcester Art Museum “The Worcester Art Museum is not your typical four walls.” Event planner and wedding coordinator Janice Potter’s assessment of the romantic venue, which handles both wedding ceremonies and receptions, is an understatement. With its world-renowned collection of art spanning more than 50 centuries, the Worcester Art Museum has been one of the city’s most renowned treasures for more than 100 years.
50 Winter 2015
BRIDE&GROOM
The “living room of Worcester,” as the sophisticated site is called, is home to some of the world’s most important works of art and has been the setting for some of the city’s most celebrated social events throughout the past century. There are several spots in the museum for celebrations, and each one is accented with visual splendor: the 12th-century Chapter House is a one-of-a-kind space with availability for up to 70 guests, and the 100-year-old Grand Renaissance Court. The Court can accommodate up to 120 guests (175 for a cocktailstyle event) and provides guests with access to the surrounding galleries on the first level of the Museum. In addition, warmweather months allow for ceremonies in the Stoddard Garden Courtyard, with its outdoor mosaic backdrop. Together with the Museum Café, the courtyard accommodates 30 to 150 guests. As far as additional services, the museum’s wedding coordinator provides a recommended list of vendors with whom they’ve partnered for numerous weddings, such as the four talented caterers they recommend who “’present delectable and artfully displayed cuisine”. Take, for example, Peppers Fine Foods and Catering, whose offerings include corn pudding, herbed risotto with edible flowers, or split roasted pork steamship with tomatoes, corn, and eggplant relish. The combination of incredible art and stunning architecture, as expressed by Potter, perhaps sums up a wedding at the Worcester Art Museum best: “surrounding your guests with visual luxury”.
Beechwood Hotel Although it’s not every day you walk into a ballroom and see a Victorian chapel, it is part of the wedding day experience at the Beechwood Hotel. “We preserve a part of Worcester’s history,” says Yvonne Caole, Sales and Marketing Manager, of the stained-glass, wood-beamed slice of nondenominational spirituality. The Marion Gill Wilson Chapel, built in 1872, was originally part of Worcester City Hospital. Named after a wife whose husband wanted to memorialize her, the chapel as wedding ceremony site (or simply a touch of reception splendor) seems most fitting. It’s adjacent to the reception room, which holds 250. The Beechwood Hotel is a full-service facility in every sense. Functions offered are ceremonies, receptions, showers, rehearsal dinners, after parties, post-wedding breakfasts/brunches, welcome receptions, and engagement parties. Home to the extraordinary Ceres Bistro, the hotel ensures fine fare at any event (appetizers such as grilled shrimp gazpacho with
cucumber relish and fresh lime or entrees such as stuffed chicken with spinach, pine nuts, mushrooms, fontina cheese and a port demi glaze, to name just two incredible options). And, of course, lovely accommodations are just a few steps away from any gathering. All of this, Caole points out, reflects the growth of the sur-
rounding community. “The hotel, like the city and the bio park where we reside, has grown from an empty field to the only 4-diamond hotel in Central Mass with an award-winning restaurant”. An expert veteran staff and a personal service are a highlight. Caole believes that continued on page 52

Coral Seafood If you fancy a food-centric wedding on Restaurant Row, then stylish Coral Seafood may well please your palate. The Shrewsbury Street locale can accommodate up to 300 people. The balcony room, which has a modern, curved glass wall with an abundance of natural light, is where ceremonies take place. Receptions are held in the ballroom, where the décor is clean and simple: neutral earth tones with gold drapery and modern alabaster chandeliers. Coral Seafood prides itself on high-quality, well-priced food. Both sit-down dinner and buffet options are available. The function menu, owner Jim Voyiatzis notes, “is prepared to order, and we don’t offer any frozen stuffed entrees”. He adds that the
details like servers knowing when not to interrupt the guest experience—they don’t have to be told—are essential. Couples have one wedding coordinator to guide them from start to finish, and they meet with every manager who touches the event (e.g., room director, banquet chef, head server, etc.). The couple gets to know the team, the goal of which is to provide reassurance one wedding day so that they “walk into a room and know the staff—and know that they understand all the details”. Indeed, when asked what the best part of taking part in a couple’s wedding is, Caole says it’s witnessing their vision come to life: “That moment when they walk in or at the end of the night, when they’re clearly happy everything came together smoothly”. restaurant works closely with some of the Woo’s best bakeries, DJs, photographers, and florists to provide couples with an excellent value for a comprehensive set of services. Add to that plenty of complimentary parking and an easy-to-get to location, and you have a venue that’s accessible in every sense of the word. When all is said and done, Voyiatzis hopes the bridal couple and wedding guests are impressed with the food and the service. He also hopes the couple feels confident knowing that “the business owner himself personally oversees the event”. Each of these four venues has a distinct vibe, to be sure. They also share one very

A Farm- Fresh Fête The romance of farm-to-table weddings. by Connie Jeske Crane
The menu reads like a dream: “Northeast family farm Grilled Pork Tenderloin set atop vanilla-scented white sweet potato puree and laced with a local apple and brandy demi-glace sauce.” “Crisp New Bedford Scallop Cake with tomato ginger jam, micro green salad, and lemon vinaigrette.” “Duck Confit Cone, local cranberry, and shallot chutney.” These are just some of the offerings on the “Sustainable and Local” catering menu at Pepper’s Fine Foods Catering in Northborough, MA.

If you are looking to serve locally grown, sustainably raised delights at your wedding, well, you’re not alone. The “locavore” wedding trend is hot and getting hotter. Whether you’re talking celebrities or everyday couples, more wedding celebrations are featuring beautiful and delicious locally sourced food, beverages, and more. “Younger couples nowadays, they’re really more socially aware, they’re environmentally aware, and they’re much more thoughtful in how they want their weddings personalized,” agrees John Lawrence, director of catering for Pepper’s. But going local isn’t just about environmental concerns and community pride. Going the locavore route usually indicates a certain level of “foodie” expertise. As Lawrence says, “The number-one thing is flavor,” says Lawrence. “You know once something has been picked, it starts to diminish in its flavor and its nutrients if it has to travel. So if I’m sourcing a local sweet potato, a local beet or a squash, the flavor is just amazing.” If you’re interested in adding some local flare to your wedding celebration, there’s great news: Local producers are stepping up with ever more unique and high-quality products. “It’s an exciting time to be in the wedding business,” says Lawrence. “The beauty is, it keeps growing. Massachusetts farms have really turned a corner.” For example, he says “Now we’re talking about continued on page 56

getting local flour and local cornmeal. A year ago that was unimaginable.” Mindy Harris is in charge of marketing and events for Oleana Restaurant Group in Cambridge, MA. Oleana serves Middle Eastern style cuisine and handles smaller daytime weddings. The restaurant also has a dependable source of fresh produce—executive chef Ana Sortun is married to the owner of Siena Farms in Sudbury, MA. In the growing season, says Harris, “We get a wonderful delivery of
fresh produce every week from the farm.” Oleana also goes through quite a bit of lamb and other meats, adds Harris. “The purveyors that we work with are these small artisan purveyors that take a lot of pride in the production of their products and give us really high-quality things.” Besides meat, dairy, and produce, Harris sees lots of activity around craft beer as well, saying it’s becoming part of really good cuisine. “Massachusetts is one of, I would say, the leading states as far as craft
beer goes, and so we are very lucky that we can get some really, really wonderful offerings locally in New England.” So how do you get started bringing some local flavor to your wedding menu? A great way to start is by talking to a caterer like Peppers—or a venue like Oleana—that specializes in farm-to-table fare. All sorts of options abound. For example, Mezze Catering and Events serves the Berkshires, Southern Vermont, Hudson Valley, and surrounding regions. Their menus focus on seasonal and regional farm-to-table cuisine and can accommo-

In the mood for seafood? The New England Aquarium’s exclusive in-house caterer has stringent standards for sustainability and uses ingredients that are locally sourced whenever possible. One final note about local sourcing: Make sure you plan ahead so you can

Also, remember that you don’t have to stop at food service. For the gals… Clothing or jewelry. Whether a shirt, robe, or pajama set, apparel to wear pre-wedding will make for happy bridesmaids (and cute pictures!). Jewelry can be worn during the wedding as well as for years afterwards. Just be sure to keep it simple and timeless. Monogrammed wine glass. Or any personalized drink ware, like tumblers or shot glasses. Some ideas for the engraving: Their name and your relationship to them, the role they played in your wedding, a friendship quote, or an inside joke. Gift basket. After their large role in planning, your ladies will likely need some time to relax post wedding. A basket filled with wine and gourmet chocolates and cheeses will please any palate. Really want to put them at ease? If budget allows, throw in a robe or gift certificate for a spa or massage. For the men… Drink and barware. If your best dudes like to party, consider a flask, beer mug, mini whisky barrel, or hand blown carafe set. Engravings can often be done on sites like amazon.com or etsy.com for free or a minimal fee. Cufflinks. The guys can wear these the day of—and again and again. Consider purchasing different cufflinks for each groomsmen to match their unique styles or personalizing them with their initials or your wedding date. continued on page 60

Casinos aren’t just for gaming anymore and playing the cards. Hot spots like Foxwoods Resort & Casino and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut have become popular places for “non-destination” destination weddings and even bachelor/bachelorette parties. From the elegant ballrooms, restaurants and spa salons as well as decadent bar-hopping, and gaming options, these resorts have everything you’ll need for a fun filled wedding weekend. Each resort is a destination in itself. Both offer winery tours, Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium trips. Perfect for unique bachelor and bachelorette parties. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum, is one of the most popular wedding venues for those who want convenience for their guests. The museum is minutes from Foxwoods Resort. Erika London and Matthew Kranz envisioned their wedding site as “extraordinary and breathtakingly memorable,” Erika said. “The second we walked into the huge (65,000 square foot) glass-domed atrium at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, we knew we’d found it.” The museum offers a variety of diverse spaces, from a rooftop garden to an area overlooking a recreated 16th century Native American village. Erika and Matthew chose to exchange their vows on a large balcony overlooking the atrium just before sunset. “The sun started setting during the ceremony and the romantic natural light flooded the room making it a truly magical moment,” Erika said. The reception was held on the atrium’s ground floor. “The glass-enclosed space sits in a forest, surrounded by trees. You feel totally isolated from the world and immersed in nature,” she said. One of their favorite memories was sneaking up to the balcony in the middle of the reception. “We watched all our friends and family having so much fun and realized they were all there for us. It made us feel incredibly lucky to have each other, be so in love and have all these people in our lives to celebrate that with,” she said. Their guests raved about the remarkable venue, the vodka shot ice luge and the casino, she said. “It was as perfect as we had imagined. The space is incredible and Stacy (the museum’s event planner) can make any vision you have come true. We took full advantage of the lighting. People pay a lot to create lighting schemes and moods and the museum has all this in-house capability and Phil (the lighting expert) can make anything happen.” Boston residents Rubina Pothiawala and Colby Cook held two back-to-back wedding events in the glass-domed atrium, each a blend of Indian and Western culture. “By changing the décor and color schemes, the two evenings looked like they were held in completely separate venues,” said Rubina.
The Friday event was reflective of a traditional Henna night with a home-style Indian buffet, family members performing traditional dances from India and a henna artist on hand. Saturday, their fusion wedding ceremony was moved indoors to the atrium balcony due to weather. “It was really nice because there was a bit of echo in the atrium which sounded almost mystical,” Rubina said. After a cocktail reception overlooking the museum’s recreated Native American Village, they moved to the atrium for dinner and dancing. continued on page 72 www.bridegroommag.com

Troon Golf’s Lake of Isles is also popular nearby site for wedding parties and as a wedding site. Its lakefront deck, overlooking 900 wooded acres, is a lovely spot for warm weather weddings or cocktail receptions. The gorgeous ballroom, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, is an ideal romantic spot for yearround wedding receptions “Free shuttles bring guests to and from Foxwoods,” noted Sheila Graham, director of catering. Couples who want to tie into the casino theme can arrange for a private room with roulette tables for a cocktail reception where guests can play for prizes or just for fun. And accommodations choices include a pet-friendly inn that is separate from the resort casino complex. Group hotel packages can also be customized with gift bags and other amenities. Less than 20 minutes away by car, Mohegan Sun brings a whole new set of options. The most popular wedding spot is the Mohegan Sun Golf Club, which pairs nicely with accommodations at the main resort. Another couple who married there in winter was Darlene and Bill Buckley. “We’ve been fans of Mohegan Sun since it opened. We love the restaurants, the music and entertainment and I love the shopping,” Darlene said. “We thought of getting married at the resort but from the moment we walked into the Golf Club, it felt right. The scenery is beautiful and 72 Winter 2015

when Joan (Stearns, the onsite planner) showed us how the wedding and reception could be done right there with catering, décor and everything included, we booked it on the spot.” “You know how you sometimes have a picture in your mind? They made it happen,” she said. For their February 14th wedding, they wanted the décor to be elegant, with subtle nods to Valentine’s Day. “We used small red boxes of chocolate for favors and the Club added red roses in a vase by the entry, which made it feel very homey.” Everyone still talks about how much fun they had and how great the food was,
Darlene said. “No one left that night until the very end and the celebration continued the next day at Mohegan Sun where everyone met for breakfast and a day of gambling, shopping and hanging out.” And that, perhaps, is the best thing about a casino-resort wedding--it’s a destination wedding with everything you and your guests could want at your doorstep. Mohegan Sun Golf Club
Pre-Wedding Flings The casinos, spas, golf courses and wide variety of dining and entertainment venues make both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun hot spots for bachelor and bachelorette parties as well as shower and engagement parties. Both have restaurants and clubs to suit every style and budget from dressy and sophisticated to party spots and laid-back pubs. You can also catch a big name act and stay overnight, or come for a weekend shop-and-play spree. “You can set up gaming lessons for groups for skill levels from novice to highly skilled with insider tips at no charge as well as a private room or private table that can serve as a home base for partiers,” noted Karen O’Connell, director of resort sales at Foxwoods. Similarly, groups headed for one of the resort’s pools or spas should ask about reserving a private area by the pool or a cabana, she said. “You can order food from room service and it really feels like a private party.” Lots of people think it’s going to be very expensive to plan a gathering at the casino resorts, but the wide array of choices mean there’s something for everyone. “Give us your budget and what you’re looking for and we’ll figure out a fun weekend or event!” said Alisha Cadoret, leisure sales specialist at Mohegan Sun. Don’t Worry, Be Happy! Insuring your Wedding Day. by Cindy Papish Gerber

uying a car without insurance is unthinkable. Similarly, savvy consumers wouldn’t think twice without insuring their home, apartment, boat, artwork, antiques, jewelry and trips. Shouldn’t the same logic apply to your wedding?

BRIDE&GROOM
“There were no words to describe the look on everyone’s face when the cake table collapsed.” In 2014, the average cost of a U.S. wedding was $29,858. Even if your budget is much smaller, “wedding insurance is the only way to protect the investment you are making”, says Allison M. Sleeves, Account Executive of Shoff Darby Companies Trumbull, CT. “It can provide coverage because of an unforeseen circumstance-such as severe weather, sudden illness, commercial transportation shutdown, or the venue being damaged before your event.” Different tiers of coverage are available depending on the type of policy a couple needs for their wedding. Coverage can cost as little as $160. Coverage amounts range from $7,500 to $175,000. These policies cover deposits, additional expenses, costs related to repairs, or missing, defective and stolen items. “You can also purchase liability coverage which protects the hosts in the event of an injury to a guest, or damage to the venue.” Although it’s best to buy insurance during the early stages of wedding planning, many policies can be obtained well after putting down any deposits. Whether you end up choosing an independent agent, purchasing online, or with a large agency, Steeves recommends choosing, “a carrier that is ‘A rated’ or better—preferably, one “that specializes in event insurance.” Any experienced agent can explain policy types, terms, costs and coverage. “Buyers need to be aware of what they are purchasing, understand the conditions or limitations and carefully read through all quotes and policy wording”, she cautions. This will “ensure you are getting the policy that meets your needs. It is important to let your agent know what specific areas of concern you may have.” continued on page 78

Weather, long-distance travel, vendor-reliability and the health of key wedding participants are common concerns. But what if a pending “I do” develops into an “I don’t”? A ‘Change of Heart’ option, which is currently offered through Wedsure.com must be purchased one year before your event and only by third-party financiers (typically the bride and groom’s parents). Last minute cold feet cannot be compensated for. As the editor-in-chief for MAWeddingGuide.com for over 14 years, Dawn McGrath recognizes how, “Mother Nature has been known to throw a few curve balls– and has definitely impacted many couples’s plans. If the mere memory of last year’s endless winter gives you the shivers, then buying a snow insurance policy is a smart move. Allison Steeves recalls one “particular father of the bride” who was shelling out $50,000

“One week before the big day, I went to pick up my dress and the bridal shop lost it.”
to cater his daughter’s winter wedding on Long Island. Afraid that a snow storm would prevent his guests from getting to the reception, he purchased snow insurance to cover the catering bill. “Of course because he did,” adds Steeves,” there was no snow!” Most wedding suppliers and venues either have built-in liability protection, or offer it as an add-on. According to the popular web-based personal financial management service Mint.com, sites that are not” typical hosts for events, such as parks and museums, often require liability insurance that will protect the venue against property damage and claims from guests or others who might be injured.” Attorney Mark W.* bought general liability coverage approximately one month in advance of his daughter’s fall 2013 wedding, which was held at municipal beachfront park on the Connecticut shoreline. “I’m a lawyer, I understand risk”, he offers. “Guests would be driving to and from the reception and alcohol was being served”. Thankfully, there was no need to file a claim. Overall, buying a little insurance for your Big Day will provide a great deal of reassurance. McGrath offers sage advice: “Many couples insure the engagement ring, so why hesitate on the actual wedding day… which costs far more than the ring?!” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. HolidayThemed
Weddings: How to do it tastefully by Diana Bierman
Tacky holiday weddings? It’s a myth! Find out how holidays can serve as the inspiration for a super chic wedding. Who doesn’t love New Year’s or Thanksgiving? Holidays are some of the happiest days in the year—a reason some brides and grooms choose to incorporate their favorite festivities into their wedding theme.

While there can be some stigma associated with holiday nuptials, there’s good news: “Hosting a wedding over a holiday does not have to make for a tacky event,” promises Mandy Connor, owner, Hummingbird Bridal and Events, Cambridge, MA. “There are gorgeous and unique color palettes and décor concepts that serve to celebrate and pay homage to the holiday in a more refined and elevated way to allow you and your significant other to shine.” So how does a couple go about pulling off a holiday-themed wedding—in a sophisticated, personalized, and unique way? Check out Mandy’s suggestions:
New Year’s Colors: A warm or rose gold, blush, and crisp white palette makes for a cozy yet chic New Year’s nuptial. “Add glitter touches wherever you can, which creates a lively party atmosphere,” Mandy says. Favor ideas: Mini champagne bottles or personalized noisemakers tie in to the theme nicely. Another option: Tiny trees ready for planting are a great way for guests to enjoy their favor for years to come. Décor: Use vintage clocks as a centerpiece to indicate a countdown to your big moment. Other unique touches: Forgo a guestbook and ask guests at each table to write advice or wishes for each year of your marriage. For example, table one can write a note that you can open on your first anniversary, and so on.

Halloween Colors: Classic blacks or reds will do just fine, but rich purples, cream, coffee, muted gold, and smoky grey can make a Halloween motif both glamorous and elegant. “Deep purple ranunculus, wheat, and white gourds are a more refined substitute for the traditional mums and orange pumpkins often used during this season,” Mandy says. Favor ideas: Keep the quote “No tricks, just treats” in mind. For instance, caramel-coated Granny Smith apples or apple cider donuts allude to the holiday—and they’re tasty to boot. Décor: “Wrap a few stalks of wheat and cinnamon or lavender together with a soft grey ribbon, and place each stalk on top of folded linen napkins for a beautiful tablescape,” says Mandy. Other unique touches: Everyone loves a dessert bar, and mini pies with vanilla ice cream or Halloween caricature cake pops (like bats, witches or ghosts) are seasonal and delicious. “Add some Bourbon to hot apple cider for an adult twist on the holiday,” Mandy suggests.

Christmas Colors: Nix the ordinary red and green color palette that most people associate with Christmas and consider crisp white with pops of rich green, gold, and silver. Favor ideas: To offset the freezing weather, give something warm and cozy, like homemade cookies or a monogrammed blanket. Or donate to a charity on behalf of your guests, to emphasize the giving season. Décor: “Candles are a must,” Mandy notes. Also, greenery, like mistletoe or green boughs, can help illuminate what can be a dreary wintry landscape. Brides can add a decorated piece of green winter foliage to their hair, or grooms can use it as a boutonniere.
Other unique touches: “Make Your Own Hot Chocolate Bars are a favorite with guests,” Mandy says.
Valentine’s Day Colors: Instead of just red and white, which can become monotonous, use a montage of pinks, reds, whites, purples, and ivory. Favor ideas: Search Etsy.com or other craft websites for useful items shaped as a heart that your guests can use—for example, a heart-shaped mug, beer opener, cutting board, etc. You also can’t go wrong with gourmet chocolates, macarons, or truffles, or monogrammed champagne glasses filled with sweet candies and confetti. Décor: Floating candles with multicolored rose petals inside are an attractive way to enhance tables. Also, lace and roses—doilies adorning the plates and petals garnishing tables—are dainty and romantic. Other unique touches: “Use photos of couples attending the wedding as escort cards and pay homage to the longest marriages and relationships in attendance with special songs, dances, or photos,” suggests Mandy. “Think Grandmom and Grandpop who have been married for 50 years.”

Fourth of July Colors: Red, white and blue can be overdone when it comes to Independence Day, so Mandy recommends “rustic Americana”—colors like muted reds, faded blues, bronze and cream. “Think New England barns, antique barn stars, sparklers, and summer fun,” she says. Favor ideas: A package of s’mores makes a delicious favor no guest will complain about. For the DIY bride, fill mason jars with gumballs or other candies to match your color theme. Décor: Patriotic ribbon streamers are a simple and budget-friendly way to embellish chairs, tablescapes, and ceremony archways. Other unique touches: If your venue allows for it, consider hosting a clambake or refined barbeque. “Invite guests to kick off their shoes for a wedding on a soft lawn, decorated with inseason, locally-sourced florals that complement the summery surroundings,” Mandy adds. The biggest thing to keep in mind: Traditional holiday concepts shouldn’t overpower what makes a couple shine. “Use the holidays as inspiration, but not as a list of rules for how you must decorate and celebrate, and put your own spin on the day,” Mandy explains. “A wedding day should ultimately be reflective of you and your significant other.” Diana Bierman is a freelance writer based in Northborough, MA.

It’s your honeymoon, after all; do what pleases you! Opportunities abound, even within the seemingly staid New England states. So don’t let someone else’s notion of honeymoon “shoulds” interfere with your experience of honeymoon bliss.

Check out lighthouse lodgings, including Rose Island Lighthouse in Narragansett Bay near Newport, RI for great fishing, kayaking, and bird watching. Websites such as NewEnglandLighthouses.net list more than a dozen lighthouses with overnight accommodations.

Both of these retreats are known by their group activities in yoga, meditation, and other wellness practices. arts, relationship-building, couples massage, as well as many approaches to yoga and other forms of movement. Canyon Ranch (not a ranch at all) centers around the former Bellefontaine Mansion and features rolling lawns and easy walks to the local town and within the tranquil property. Activities include cooking demonstrations, drumming, beading, tennis, basketball, dance, and so much more. Both retreat centers offer extensive and highly acclaimed spas, and each is surrounded by the cultural and natural gifts of the Berkshires.
Over the Top If you’re going to splurge, consider the high end Winvian Resort in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills where lodgings include a Sikorsky helicopter-turned-sumptuous suite, a treehouse complete with wood-burning stove and Jaccuzzi, and guest cottages created as an art studio, greenhouse, or musical playground, among other
themes. Bicycles are available on site, as are wine tastings, cooking classes with the resort’s chef, an organic garden, and farm-totable dining. Off-site adventures include hot air ballooning, auto racing school, glass-blowing, and snow tubing in the winter or river tubing in summer. So pick your pleasure, and start your married life with an escape designed just for you. You’ll be delighted by the unique memories you and your sweetie create when you go your own way, with a honeymoon that expresses your passions, interests, and style.
