Q&A: Richard Chevalier, Founder of Bride & Groom Magazine™ Founded in 1981, this winter marks the 35th anniversary of Bride & Groom Magazine™. We spoke with Richard Chevalier to find out how B&G got its start and take a look at its journey over the past three decades. How did the magazine get started? The origin of the magazine was a result of Chevalier Furniture. I was in charge of PR and advertising in the 80s and realized one day we weren’t seeing enough business from young couples getting married. So I put together a TV program and I said, “Hi I’m your best friend in the furniture world—are you getting married soon? Come pick out furniture and put it on layaway!” As a result of the success we saw from this, we decided to put together a wedding expo bridal show. We teamed up with several bridal merchants and put on the first show in Shrewsbury in 1978, and attracted hundreds of engaged couples. We figured there must be an even better way to reach the bridal market. And so began the birth of the magazine. What’s unique about the magazine? We have over 100 distribution locations within 50 miles of Central Massachusetts. We also distribute at The Original Wedding Expo™, plus my wife, Germaine Chevalier is involved in distribution and has been there since day one.

Lynn Carbonneau-Reed, CEO Carbonneau Bridal and Mocine Salon & Spa

BRIDE&GROOM
hat began as custom shoe repair and selling shoes in the 1920s is now a full-fledged bridal shop in Worcester, offering stylish gowns and accessories for all types of brides. Spanning four generations, Carbonneau Bridal has continued to evolve over the years based on customer needs, and now, Lynn Carbonneau-Reed has also taken on sister company Mocine Salon & Spa. We sat down with the current CEO and owner to learn about the highly rated shop and salon that every local bride should know about.
What q:
are the price ranges for wedding dresses at Carbonneau Bridal and what designers do you carry?
a:
Dresses range from around $500 to $4,000, so we truly have a dress for every budget. After so many months, dresses will discontinue and those get marked down about 50%. We carry lots of designers, from Allure Bridal to Casablanca Bridal, Pronovias, and more. We also offer rentable tuxes for grooms and groomsmen, ranging from about $150 to $220. Alterations at my boutique, should be done in house based on our expert team of stylist pinners and knowledge of custom bridal alterations.
q: What
are brides are looking for these days?
a:
Lace is huge right now and has been for over a year. Brides seem to also like a little bit of color nowadays. For example, a big thing is bringing in a light gold underlay beneath an ivory dress. “White-white” has been gone for years, and now brides are going for champagne or ivory, which tends to look better on most skin tones. How did Mocine Salon & Spa come q: about?
a:
We basically said, “Let’s do it all!” The idea was to create a one-stop shop that would bring the whole picture together so people don’t have to ask for referrals for certain services after purchasing their gown. My sister is licensed in cosmetology and volunteered to help, so makeup and hair is just one more thing we can offer our customers. Massages, facials, waxing, body wraps—pretty much any spa service you can think of—are also offered at the spa.
q: What are the price ranges of your services?
a:
The great part is we offer our services in levels, so you only pay for what you need. Level 1: hair down with a curl for $50. Level 2: half up/half down for $60. Level 3: a complete updo for $70. We have a similar three-level system for
makeup: Level 1 is 30 minutes for a natural style for $45. Level 2 we call “fine and sassy”—45 minutes for $55. And Level 3 is called “hot and spicy” for 60 minutes at $65. Brides and bridesmaids (and grooms and groomsmen) also get discounts if they purchase their wedding attire at Carbonneau Bridal—and that includes preserving and cleaning the gown, discounts on jewelry, shoes, and more.
q: What sets your businesses apart from the others?
a:
Definitely our customer service. I had the unique opportunity of watching my grandparents run this business. There’s something to be said for oldschool training—something like helping someone slide their shoe on. At the end of the day, I stand 100% by our commitment to our customers. Not to disregard a big chain store, but it’s not possible for them to work as closely with their customers as a small business can. Everyone who works at our shop is very passionate about what they do and knowledgeable about the fashion industry. We also have such a great family following, which is special. So many customers come in
and share memories like, “Your grandpa was so good to me—he sold my daughter her dance shoes 25 years ago!” and tell us how happy they are with the service.
q: What are your plans for the future? a: We’re looking forward to expansion
possibilities in the near future and hopefully combining our salon on Park Avenue under one roof with our bridal salon. We do, however, have a full cosmetology license and currently offer formal hairstyling and a makeup bar. I know that makes our shop unique as no one in the area offers the same services inside their bridal salon. Down the road a bit, we’ll be expanding the services we offer at the bridal shop including facials and massages.

Colleen and Matt Santon July 2, 2016 The Farm at SummitWynds in Jefferson, MA Colleen and Matt wed on July 2, 2016, at the Farm at SummitWynds in Jefferson, MA. The couple first met seven years ago during a night out with mutual friends. Little did they know that the events of that night would bring them together as a couple. After a night of talking, dancing, laughing, and learning a bit more about each other, Matt eventually left, and a little later, Colleen and her friend decided to head home, too. Upon leaving the venue that night, the two women were robbed at gunpoint.

Word traveled fast and Matt learned of the events that unfolded after he departed that night. A few days later, Matt came strolling into the restaurant where Colleen worked to see how she was holding up. Since her money, cell phone, bank cards, and keys were stolen, there wasn’t much she could do with her free time, so Matt’s invitation for a dinner date seemed like a delightful offer. Seven years later, Matt and Colleen were married! In July of 2015, a week after celebrating her sister’s wedding to Matt’s best friend, Matt suggested a beach trip when they were both off work. The couple had made fairly regular day trips to local beaches, but hadn’t been in awhile. Matt tossed a few suggestions around before pretending to randomly pick Plum Island—a
“The bouquet and centerpieces were seasonal wildflowers, so wildflowers became the focal point for the invitations and the cake.” beach Colleen had only been to in the fall and wanted to check out in the summertime. Matt had worked long shifts several days in a row, and kept commenting on how tired he was. He suggested that they find somewhere to stay overnight in one of Colleen’s favorite little cities near Plum Island—Newburyport. After spending a great day at the beach, Matt suggested they head back to the hotel to change and spice things up at a new dinner spot. As they walked along the red brick path near Newburyport Harbor, Matt stopped for a moment. Not thinking anything of it, Colleen kept talking and walking. She realized after a few seconds that she was walking and talking by herself. Colleen turned around to find Matt on one knee asking her to spend the rest of her life with him. After a brief moment of excitement, Colleen found out that Matt had
more surprises up his sleeve. He had reserved a private charter boat for a sunset cruise, and he even brought champagne! The next morning, he rented a lighthouse for a celebratory private breakfast. It was truly an unforgettable weekend. The Farm at SummitWynds was exactly the venue that Colleen had dreamed of, and since it was a fairly new spot, they had the best options for dates. They knew they wanted an outdoor wedding, and as a teacher, summer was ideal for Colleen. They narrowed it down to a few dates,
wrote them on sticky notes, and let their dog pick. She picked July 2, so they had just under a year to plan the event! Colleen had told her friends, “I just want a big field with pretty views and a tent—something I can make my own.” The Farm at SummitWynds was exactly that—the outside of the venue itself is beautiful, and each renovation that was made only made it more breath-taking. Colleen felt lucky to have a sister/maid of honor who had JUST been married, who was like continued on page 18 www.bridegroommag.com

having an personal planner on-call 24/7. She also has some talented best friends who worked with her on engagement photos and invitation ideas. Colleen even ended up making her own invitation suite. The couple kept their wedding style simple, accentuated by hints of rustic elegance. The bouquet and centerpieces were seasonal wildflowers, so wildflowers became the focal point for the invitations and the cake. The centerpieces included vintage, eclectic vases and simple burlap runners. Matt showed his crafty side by making wood slabs for the centerpieces and creating wood-burned table numbers. He also repurposed an old pallet to serve as the seating chart where they wrote guest names and table numbers on wildflower seed packets. Another nice touch (an idea Colleen stole from her sister’s wedding) was to have a locket affixed to her bouquet with photos of her grandmother and uncle, who both passed away in 2015. Having their pictures made it feel like they were able to be there in a special way.
Food was a big hit at the wedding! The Boynton catered and offered guests a choice of prime rib, grilled salmon with dill, or a vegetarian primavera. There were five passed hors d’oeuvres and stationary platters with shrimp cocktail, cheese and crackers, and vegetables with hummus. The cake was provided by On the Rise Baking, and it was an absolute showstopper— devil’s food with espresso buttercream, topped with a white fondant. Betty Casey, the owner of On the Rise, and her team of incredible bakers created handpainted sugar paste cascading down the side of the cake. The cake was an exact replica of the flowers used in all of Colleen’s printed designs. Betty also provided mini whoopee pies and cookies to be served at each table. The couple cannot say enough about how wonderful all of the food vendors were to work with. The entertainment was great, too! Music on Wheels, a husband-and-wife DJ company from New Bedford, kept the party going all night. One thing that makes Music on Wheels so special is that they worked for
months in secret with the maid of honor and best man, to customize tracks that perfectly complimented the “throwback to 90s hip-hop” toast. The day flew by for the couple. The biggest highlight came after the wedding when they got a chance to view the “highlight reel” of their wedding film made by Adam Metterville Video Productions. The video was a gift from the maid of honor and best man. Other standouts of the day include lawn games during cocktail hour and the sparkler send-off. What advice do Colleen and Matt have for other brides and grooms? The guest list can be the hardest part; once you finalize it, leave it alone! Colleen and Matt suggest taking a moment on the big day to pause, look around, and soak in all the beauty, love, and friendship.

Bring on the Food Trucks! by Cindy Papish Gerber

ho doesn’t love food trucks? Meals on wheels for real, these mobile, hip, crowd-pleasing, mobile eateries are serving up everything from grilled cheese to locally sourced, artisanal gourmet fare. Incredibly, U.S. statistics confirm that these rolling restaurants have become a $1.2 billion industry. It’s no wonder that more couples are choosing food trucks to help cater their wedding.

“Whether it is a cocktail hour, dinner service, or post-reception surprise,” says Eric Weiner, CEO and founder of FoodTrucksIn.com, “food trucks offer variety and flexibility that can add fun and excitement to a wedding.” What’s more, “a bride and groom are almost certainly supporting a local small business, working with someone that takes great care in their product and services.” His website enables users to peruse over 6,500 food trucks in more than 1,400 cities and find local festivals where they can sample food and interview vendors. “This helps make the task of choosing the right food truck fun and efficient,” Weiner adds. Brian Sousa, owner of O’Crepe, The Rolling Creperie in Providence, RI, has served up sweet and savory crepes for weddings since opening in August 2014. “Traveling as far as Boston’s North Shore and as far south as Groton, CT, we mostly do post-wedding brunch and late-night snacks,” he says. One of his most memorable catering jobs was also his very first, “serving late-night crepes to all the guests” at Sara Zarrella and Steve Sheally’s wedding at Gerald’s Farm in Exeter, RI. Zarrella, an experienced “photo-novelist,” who is accustomed to taking pictures
of other brides, explains, “The reasons we went with O’Crepe over another food truck is, “A, their food; and B, I photographed the owner’s wedding the spring prior to mine.” Zarrella felt good about supporting another local business and enjoyed surprising their guests with “something different.” “We approach a wedding, not as a novelty, but a full-service catering job,” maintains Avi Shemtov, chef and owner

of Boston’s The Chubby Chickpea. His food truck serves “cutting-edge Middle Eastern cuisine, doing 12 to 15 weddings per season.” At a farm wedding for 140 guests they ran cocktail hour, passed hors d’oeuvres, and served dinner buffet with seven items plus two sandwich options. Shemtov sheds light upon why more and more couples are considering food trucks: “Reason one is the trendy coolness factor; and two, they understand that tomorrow’s Michelin-starred chefs are cooking creative, exciting food on food trucks today.” Not all food truck vendors are equally equipped to cater large parties. Brides and grooms need to scrutinize contracts and check details and references. “You need to have conversation with operators about their experience and make sure they understand your catering needs,” Shemtov advises.

The Big Green Pizza Truck has been going strong for 13 seasons. “We’re the premier food truck in Connecticut,” says manager Liane Page. “In 2015, we did 28 weddings and this year over 35.” Offering a wide variety of specialty wood-fired oven pizzas accompanied by salad, espresso, cappuccino, and gelato for dessert, their current fleet of six antique International Harvester trucks will include a seventh to serve beer and wine in 2017. Due to popular demand, Page recommends that prospective Connecticut and Westchester County, NY, clients book early—up to one year ahead for peak summer weekends. Breanna and Matt Iannucci used the Big Green Truck Pizza for their June 19, 2016, reception at Barberry Hill Farm in Madison, CT. “Matt and I really wanted our wedding to be relaxed and feel like an upscale backyard celebration. We tried to
play to our Italian heritage by having antipasto for appetizers (catered by a friend) and homemade wine on the tables. Naturally, the pizza truck was a great fit . . .

Brianna & Jason Roberts June 25, 2016 Shaker Hills Country Club Harvard, MA
Brianna and Jason Roberts wed on June 25, 2016, at Shaker Hills Country Club in Harvard, MA. The couple met through mutual friends in 2009, and they are the very definition of the saying “opposites attract.” Although they’re polar opposites, true love took its course and now they’re inseparable. Jason proposed to Brianna on March 3, 2015. To celebrate their “fur baby” Bella’s fifth birthday the couple agreed to go hiking for the day. Despite the snow and chilly conditions, the trio made it to the top of the mountain and took a moment to take in the gorgeous view.

“The highlight of the ceremony for Brianna and Jason was having their dog Bella as the ring bearer.”
Brianna grabbed her camera to take a photo and when she turned around, Jason was down on one knee with Bella by his side, asking her to marry him! Once the couple saw Shaker Hills Country Club, they instantly knew this would be “the” place. Their ceremony was held on the golf course where white chairs were lined up and decorated with pink and gold bows. White rose petals covered the green creating an elegant aisle for Brianna and the wedding party to walk down. The couple continued this theme into their reception where tables were dressed with gold vases with white and pink hydrangeas and hints of gold as their centerpieces. The menu, ceremony seating, and candy bar signs were all hand painted on golden decorative wood. Along with their candy bar, guests dined buffet style with a tenderloin carving station with peppercorn sauce, a pasta station—marinara and Alfredo—with assorted vegetables, chicken marsala, red-skin mashed potatoes, and garlic greenbeans with tomato and red pepper. The food was delicious and all provided by Shaker Hills. continued on page 28

The highlight of the ceremony for Brianna and Jason was having their dog Bella as the ring bearer. It’s tradition that the best man has the rings, so when the officiant, Brianna’s father, asked for the rings, he turned to Jay’s best man and twin brother Matt, who searched his pockets pretending to look for the ring. Bella then let out a bark letting Matt know she had the rings around her collar. What a fun way to incorporate their canine family member! Toward the end of the night, their photographer, Alvah, pulled the couple outside for some photos under the clear sky and bright shining stars. While he was trying to get the shot, the sprinklers turned on and began to mist Brianna and Jason before they were able to run away. Alvah got a great shot of this unexpected and fun occurrence with the sprinkler just turning on. Brianna and Jason both feel that throughout all the craziness it’s important to always keep in mind what the wedding day is all about. They suggest that couples shouldn’t “over-think the minor details. Ask questions, write things down, and keep your planning and papers organized.”

The Color Real
O
by Cindy Papish Gerber
nce you select all the members of your bridal party, the first thing they usually want to know is which colors you’ve chosen for their ensembles. This choice is easily made, unless . . . You adore dusty rose, but your maid of honor isn’t as enthusiastic. Your groom suggests navy, but his mom (your future mother-in-law) says it’s overdone. What now? For many couples, deciding on the ideal colors that will flatter the attendants, look great in photos, and complement room décor can be quite challenging.

“For those who are afraid of color, sticking with a neutral palette and using texture is a beautiful alternate solution to color worries,” says Lauren Mace, coordinator and designer for Eutopia Events. “We tell our clients to take inspiration from anything they love . . . that will coordinate with their style, personality, venue, and other design choices. It doesn’t have to be something weddingrelated.” And while it’s easy to match colors to the season, Mace feels it’s just as important to sync the vibe of your venue with your color scheme. Mace has never run into a situation “where someone refused to wear a chosen color.” For the most part, attendants “realize that they are there to support the couple,” she says. On the flip side, “if you’re a member of a wedding party and don’t like the color, unfortunately that is not up to you decide. Often couples will discuss their colors and styles with their wedding party before making a final selection.” Lauren Begen and Sean Murray admit they “kind of bucked the idea of ‘wedding colors’ in the traditional sense” for their June 2016 wedding, which took place

at two very distinct venues. “We wanted the ceremony (held at the historic Smith College Chapel) to be the more traditionally romantic portion of the event,” says Lauren. The bridesmaids’ deep teal dresses, accented by “ivories and grays,” complemented a range of skin tones and “everyone looked really beautiful.” For their reception at the contemporary Eric Carle Museum, Lauren and Sean initially struggled with incorporating “four massive murals in primary colors” without having
their wedding “feel like a child’s birthday party.” To help transform this “large, open, blank space,” Mace created “a white-onwhite color scheme with subtle pops of yellow details” on the tables and bars. The cohesive end result “felt bold, but inviting; colorful, but sophisticated and totally unique.” Mace points out that while “classic allwhite weddings never really go out of style, every year there are trending colors.” continued on page 32

Metallics, glittery tones, blues, pastels, and grays have been popping up all over wedding mood boards. Don’t rule out basic black, which has a timeless appeal. “I wear a lot of black,” shares Rebecca Ravksi, who “had a pretty

solid idea of what I wanted” for her wedding colors. Both Rebecca and husband Mitchell Berkowitz wanted “a sleek modern look” for their celebration, which took place this past August at Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge, CT. The resulting chic black-and-white color scheme “fit our personalities the best.” Each of the eight bridesmaids wore a different style of flattering black gown from the Bill Levkoff collection. “I wanted them to feel comfortable, so that was my main concern,” she notes. The black tie, white-accented ensembles also extended to the parents, grandmothers, and groomsmen. To make this black-and-white event “stand out from others,” their event planner, Judy Skolnick, incorporated pops of vivid color (fuchsia, pink, orange, and yellow) into the cocktail hour’s décor. For the reception, Skolnick used various stripes and polka-dotted table linens, black-and-white chairs, and incorporated draped white fabric (main tent and lighting drums) for extra drama. “I feel strongly about being flexible” says Skolnick. “Most brides today
have strong feelings about which colors they like. Between Pinterest and magazines, it’s well thought out before I even become involved. Like any good designer, her real expertise is “to make the colors of their attire blend with their venue, flowers, and décor . . . to make it all work together.” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. May 28, 2016 Four Seasons Hotel Boston, MA
Nicole and David Wong tied the knot on May 28, 2016, at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. They were high school sweethearts and met for the first time during English class at Lincoln Sudbury High School. They even worked part time at the same local supermarket. The time they spent together allowed them to blossom as a couple, and they were together for five years before David proposed to Nicole on her birthday. To Nicole, it was a long wait; her fellow school teachers questioned her after every weekend about whether or not she was engaged. 34 Winter 2017

The couple took about three years to plan their wedding while David was attending medical school. During this time, they were able to develop a clear vision for their wedding day. They imagined a late spring wedding to capture all the beauty Boston has to offer at that time of year. They even had their pictures taken in the Public Garden, which added to their spring-inspired Boston celebration. The couple tied the knot at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and the celebration continued at the Four Seasons Hotel. The guests, wedding party, and newly married couple arrived at the hotel to a transformed ballroom, elegantly decorated in gold and pink. The tables were covered with shimmery gold runners and dusted continued on page 36 www.bridegroommag.com

One of the highlights from the reception was the beautifully designed cake created by Montilios based in Brockton. The fourtier cake was covered in a bronzed shimmery fondant with white intricate paisley inspired piping. Nicole and David incorporated many personal touches including photographs at every table, a dessert bar with their favorite treats, a memorial table for their lost loved ones, and personalized bar napkins. When asked for their number-one piece of advice for couples currently planning a wedding, they suggested making lots of lists to keep yourself organized and on top of what needs to be done each month.

Dress Shopping Tips: A Complete Guide to Finding the Perfect Wedding Dress for Every Budget, Size, and Taste by Cindy Papish Gerber

s a little girl, did you ever dream about walking down the aisle wearing a breathtakingly beautiful wedding dress? Now that you’re all grown up, and are in fact, planning your wedding, how will you go about finding that elusive dress of your childhood dreams?
“When a bride gets engaged, one of the first things she considers is the date of the wedding,” says Jaclyn Walmsley, manager of David’s Bridal in Natick, MA. “Then she immediately starts thinking about her dress. Brides get excited to try on gowns.” Whether you’ve set your sights on a high-end designer creation, a discounted sample—a design that is timeless or trendy—before rushing to buy, you should determine a realistic price range. “Every bride has a different budget and it’s difficult to determine an ‘average’ price.” Walmsley advises brides-to-be to, “consider not only the cost of
the dress, but also alterations, foundation garments, and accessories that will complete her head-to-toe wedding day look.” In addition to clipping magazine photos, she suggests doing a comprehensive online search. This will help you narrow down silhouettes and fabrics which will define your personal style. Where and when your wedding will take place (season and venue formal or informal, daytime or evening, etc.) should also factor into your dress selection. Your choices can be “favorited,” saved and compiled into a file or folder that you can later share with your stylist. continued on page 40

So, when do you begin shopping in earnest? “Start about nine months to a year before the wedding,” says Sue Krasinskas, owner of Bella’s Bridal Boutique in Worcester, MA. “Designer gowns should be ordered eight to ten months in advance to ensure there is enough time for delivery and alterations.” Likewise, Walmsey reminds newbie shoppers, “it’s important to keep in mind that many dresses are made to order and may take up to 16 weeks to be produced.” For time-pressured brides-to-be, “purchasing an off-the-rack or sample-size is a great way to save time and money,” shares Krasinskas. “Also, some designers offer a rush option with an added charge or an option of limited gown styles that are on a priority ship program.” Walmsey agrees that such time-saving measures allow busy brides, “to move on to the next thing in her planning process.” Plus-sized, petite, curvy, athletic, or inbetween, “if a bride is looking for a specific style or size, it’s a good idea to contact the bridal shop to find out if it’s in their inventory,” offers Sandra Barbar, manager of Bella’s Bridal. By choosing a reputable stylist who can offer you a personalized experience and is knowledgeable about alterations and fitting proper foundation garments, brides of every shape can find the ideal dress. “Trends we’re seeing,” she says, “include plunging necklines, illusion backs, and blush colors.” Walmsey recommends brides keep an open mind and be honest throughout the dress-shopping process. “Many times the style she least expects to like, ends up being ‘the one.’” Marquita Lizotte, who married her husband Jon on July 1, 2016, originally thought she, “wanted lace sleeves and did not like mermaid dresses.” But after trying on a dress with lace sleeves, “I ended up with a mermaid dress and did not like the lace sleeves on me.” Her final selection, purchased at Bella’s Bridal was a “perfect” Essense of Australia vintage-inspired “fit and flare” gown. “Although I tried on many dresses,”she recalls, “the winning dress was the very first one I tried on.” 40 Winter 2017

Remaining “very opened minded” and “listening to professionals” was essential to Lizotte. Barbar concurs. One of the most common mistakes brides make, she says, is to bring too many people with them to try on gowns “Different opinions take away from the focus of what she likes and can lead to confusion.” Walmsey suggests, “bringing only those who are closest to the bride,” as well as keeping the gown secret from the groom, which can sometimes be hard to achieve. “Enjoy EVERY minute of this beautiful, fun, exciting, stressful, and crazy experience,” Lizotte concludes. “Relax, don’t stress, and have fun! Because . . . how many times will you get to try on wedding dresses?” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. She writes from Connecticut.

Big or Small Getting a handle on your guest list by Cindy Papish Gerber
A
ccording to WeddingWire’s annual Newlywed Report, the average number
of wedding guests in the US for 2015 was 120. In New England, guest counts skew slightly higher at 150 to 200. By applying this sum to the average cost
per-person, your total wedding bill can produce a case of severe sticker shock. Or, you can properly prepare for your big day by crunching your numbers.

BRIDE&GROOM
“When considering how many guests to invite” says Jessica Bishop founder and editor of The Budget Savvy Bride, “you’ll want to ask yourself questions about your preferences, venue, and budget. Do you want to have a small, intimate celebration or a large, exciting party? How many people can your venue fit? How many guests can you realistically afford to host? Finding the cross section of answers to these questions will help determine how many people you ‘should’ invite.” A widespread rule of thumb is to invite 10% more guests than your target number; typically, between 10 and 20% of those invited will decline. Danielle Deschene, the event specialist for the Grand View, a newly renovated venue in Mendon, MA that accommodates 150 to 400 guests, recommends “creating an A and B list. “Your A-list consists of people you must have,” says Deschene (family and close friends) who will receive the first round of invitations. The B-list is made up of others (extended family, co-workers, parents’ friends) you want there.” Once you receive regrets from your A-list, “it’s
customary to proceed to those on your Blist,” she notes. She also advocates “keeping numbers on the conservative side. You can always add to it later on if there’s room in the budget.”
“Do you want to have a small, intimate celebration or a large, exciting party?” After sending out more than 150 invitations to their June 2017 wedding at Yale University, Josh Smith and Katie Cladis are hoping to have 120 in attendance. “We started with the basics—close family and close friends,” Smith explains. “We then worked together to determine our more peripheral friends, sorting them by group and trying to keep groups together. It was either an ‘everyone’s invited’ or ‘no one’s invited’ situation,” which proved “hard to do 100%.” Lastly, the couple asked their parents to submit guest lists. After com-
piling everyone’s lists, a definitive version was finalized. “Never invite more people than you can afford, as all of those people could say yes!” cautions Lauren Mace, co-owner of Eutopia Events. Both Mace and her business partner, Ruthie McDonald, tell their clients, “to only invite those who they can’t picture not being there to celebrate.” Similarly, broadcasting the big date to everyone you know and posting it on social media, “could create tension or animosity,” says Mace. This scenario especially applies to those relegated to the B-list. “If you are doing save-the-dates,” she maintains, “make sure you never send one to a person who you are not 100% sure you will be inviting.” Then there’s the dilemma of the plus ones. The Eutopia Events team believes “that if a couple is married, their spouse should be invited. Otherwise it should be a case-by-case decision. Extending a plus one when possible is a good idea.” After tallying your numbers, it’s division time. How you divide the guest list really depends upon family dynamics, continued on page 44

relationships, and finances. If the bride and groom can afford to chip in, Dyan Mezzone, the Grand View’s business operations manager, suggests “dividing everything in thirds: one-third for the bride’s family, one-third for the groom’s family, and one-third for the couple.” When one family pays for most of the wedding, couples “need to determine a strategy based on the circumstances,” And if the size of the bride’s family is unequal to the groom’s and the list seems unbalanced, Deschene suggests that the families get together to “work creatively and compassionately to come up with a solution that works well for everyone.” According to Deschene, “the most common” numbers mistake that befalls couples is due to misinformation. By asking questions and obtaining written estimates of every single wedding expense, including commonly overlooked line items such as gratuities, taxes, and fees, you and your partner will breeze through your numbers like true math whizzes!

“I see a lot of classic seventies,” says Maria Lekkakos, owner of M. Lekkakos Salon, Spa & Boutique, celebrity stylist, and 2004 Miss Massachusetts USA. Along with knitting hair with braids, buns with braids around soft flowing hair, and side waves, Lekkakos notes that she sees “a myriad of styles that look effortless and gorgeous.” Sexy and playful is how Lekkakos describes the look this season. She notes that extensions will always be in style and that balayage is a hot color trend. While Lekkakos and her stylists look at the latest trends and red carpet fashion, they ultimately advise brides to select styles that fit their individual look. “We always customize hairstyles to complement a bride’s features, such as skin tone and bone structure,” she says.

Nicole Murphy of Salon Sage notes says that she sees brides wearing a more bohemian look than in the past. “Four years ago, brides were wearing a lot of updos, buns, and hair swept to the side,” says Murphy who sees brides donning a more loose and effortless look favoring braids. She also notes that brides are having more fun with color, opting for reds and purples in shades of mahogany and raspberry truffle. Murphy offers these tips for creating your very own bridal hairstyle: • Make sure to schedule a hair trial at least three months before your wedding. •
Do some research before your trial to have a couple of ideas to share with your stylist. Murphy notes that many of her brides get great ideas from Pinterest.

Ways to Warm Up
Your Wedding Reception

Flavors and Feelings “When I think of warmth, I think of it in two ways: physically warming and warming of the heart. The first way to warm up a reception is with some seasonal warm flavors, such as an apple cider and doughnut station in the fall or an interactive hot cocoa bar for the chilly winter months. When it comes to warming the heart, old wedding photos of parents, grandparents, and greatgrandparents really celebrate the families joining together and is sure to give every guest that warm feeling. One of my favorite ways to personalize a wedding is to name the tables after special places where the bride and groom have been together,” says Tina Nevitt, director of catering and events at the Boston Marriott Burlington. Cocktails and Coverings “Nothing warms up a reception like winter cocktails. Serve guests anything from mulled wine or hot toddies to spiked cider and peppermint hot chocolate. Throw in plaid blanket scarves as party favors for the perfect cozy setting. Tip: While your guests are warming up inside, they’ll need a place to store their winter coats, so don’t forget a coat rack!” says Callie Barrett, event coordinator at The Day Of Events. Jazzed-up Java “As a past Christmas bride myself, a coffee bar is the perfect trendy way to celebrate the season for your chilly wedding day. Whether your theme is winter rustic or icy glam, the options are endless when it comes to personalizing your own hot beverage station. Custom coffee cozies labeled with your wedding date, specialty-flavored creamers that highlight your hometowns, and even colorful Keurig brewing systems that give that interactive fun for your guests can all transform your nuptials into a sweet cozy celebration to keep everyone’s hearts and hands warm,” offers Chelsea LaVere of Tidewater and Tulle. Toasty Tips Tina Miljevi´c, catering director at Aloft Boston Seaport, shares these tips for warming up a winter wedding: • Warm up a winter white wedding with pops of warm winter blues in your color scheme. Blues can be woven into floral arrangements, tablescapes, and even clothing for the bridal party. • Candlelight with glittered linens adds that extra warmth to the room. The sparkle creates just the right touch of magic. • Espresso and cappuccino bars are perfect for warming up and are trending for dessert displays. • Faux fur coats and shawls are chic and an excellent way for the bride and bridesmaids to warm up in style. Warm wishes! Stacey Marcus is a freelance writer based in Marblehead.

Brunch Weddings:
5 Things to Know About the Early-Bird Wedding Trend
D
by Connie Jeske Crane
o you love mornings, brunch, and a sparkly strawberry mimosa? Do you lean towards intimate or laid-back gatherings? If you answered yes to any of these questions then the brunch wedding may be for you. Brunch weddings—where ceremonies are scheduled for late morning and capped off with a festive brunch reception—seem to be popping up all over lately. If you’re intrigued by the idea, here’s our list of the top five things you should know about brunch weddings: 56 Winter 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
1. So what’s the appeal? Alexis Eliopoulos O’Mara of Boston-based Unique Weddings by Alexis has planned several brunch weddings lately. She notes this route is generally chosen by couples who aren’t intent on a large formal bash or latenight party: “I feel like the brunch wedding is more for folks who are aiming to make it a little different. It’s not like they’re not looking to do all the traditions, but it’s more like having a party with close family and friends. Sometimes it’s a little larger but it’s still very personal. Couples can spend a lot more time with each guest, and there’s more focus on the actual ceremony.” While intimacy and a slightly more relaxed vibe are part of the appeal, couples can still make things festive and tradition-packed, says Eliopoulos O’Mara. “They can do first dances and cake-cutting and all the things you see at an evening wedding,” she says. “But they have more sit-down time with their guests, and maybe the food is station-style, because that’s when people get up and mingle.” 2. It’s all about the natural light. Brunch weddings come with a surplus of daylight which can make for gorgeous photography. Nevertheless, Eliopoulos O’Mara cautions couples to choose venues thoughtfully. “Going into a ballroom without windows in a hotel is not a great fit for a brunch,” she says. “There’s nothing to make it special.” Instead, Eliopoulos O’Mara suggests seeking bright venues with lots of windows, great architecture, beautiful scenery or other visual interest. “Something like that is going to be appreciated throughout the entire event.” 3. You have permission to play with the menu. “I see is people leaning towards having a little bit of fun with the food or making it unique,” says Eliopoulos O’Mara. Besides fancy twists on old brunch standards like pancakes, eggs Benny and quiche, she suggests offering interactive and make-your-own stations. “A made-to-order omelette station or chicken and waffles, or a cool mashed potato bar, tacos.” As for beverage service, you can serve lots of festive brunch favorites. “Whether it’s mimosas and Bloody Marys, or drinks with prosecco—Bellinis—something that’s a little bit festive and fun and colourful,” says Eliopoulos O’Mara. But be sure to offer non-alcoholic options as well, she adds, noting that an espresso bar is a great fit. 4. There are potential cost savings. Finally, Eliopoulos O’Mara notes several areas where brunch weddings can be cost-effective. For example, continued on page 58 www.bridegroommag.com
57
renting a venue at midday can often land you a discount. With music, she sees couples tending to hire a small ensemble over a full bands. Further savings may follow because certain extras aren’t required, she adds: “You may not need to bring in things like rental dance floors and lighting.” Finally, Eliopoulos O’Mara says. “With a bar that is more focused on wine and prosecco and speciality drinks and coffee—and less on the booze—you may end up spending a lot less on your bar bill.”

5. After-parties are a thing. Because a brunch wedding ends earlier, couples have options for the rest of the day. Eliopoulos O’Mara suggests spending some time with visiting family “before it’s time for everyone to head out.” Others opt for a casual after-party, she adds. “It’s almost like a welcome cocktail hour where anyone can stay and they may have appetizers and cocktails at a pub or bar . . . I’ve also seen people go and change and head out for something touristy. Maybe they’ll take guests out sailing or do some sort of tour.” And of course, some couples choose to do nothing at all, says Eliopoulos O’Mara. “They literally just end the night and spend some time with family or just take the time to do their own thing.” Connie Jeske Crane is a full-time freelance writer and reports frequently on weddings, parenting, sustainability, and social media. You can visit her at www.conniejeskecrane.com.

s a couple embarks on their wedding day, their family history begins. It only seems fitting to start that new beginning at a place steeped in history, where family, along with individualized service, come first—not to mention the breathtaking views! That place is the Old Mill in Westminster, MA. Originally a sawmill dating back to 1761, the Old Mill existed for five generations as the place where local logs were processed to construct the new homes popping up all over this lovely part of the state into the late 1800s. Just prior to World War II, the building spent a brief period as a lovely tea room, until the late 1940s when it was purchased by husband-and-wife duo Ralph and Ruth Foster, who opened what today serves as one of the oldest restaurants and function facilities in New England.
“The Old Mill continues to charm guests with its truly unique setting and rustic beauty that is only rivaled by its hospitality.” Seventy years, and three generations later, the Old Mill is still owned and operated by the Foster family. Changing with the times yet staying true to its roots, the Old Mill continues to charm guests with its truly unique setting and rustic beauty that is only rivaled by its hospitality. “This restaurant and the land it sits upon has been a labor of love for my family since its beginnings; that’s what it’s all about for us,” says the founder’s grandson and owner, Jay Foster. “When it comes to the setting, it would be tough to find anything more spectacular and traditionally New England than what we have here.” Located just a half mile off Route 2 at the gateway of the Mohawk Trail, the Old Mill is situated close to Boston and Central Massachusetts, yet it’s tucked just far enough away in a quintessential New England storybook setting. Guests marvel at the picturesque vistas at every turn. Just walking from the parking area to the Old Mill’s lobby, guests stroll across one of the two covered bridges, constructed from vintage barn board and marvel at the serene duck pond and arbor where many couples choose to exchange their vows. The river flows into the beautiful and exhilarating waterfall where the Old Mill’s historic building sits. The backdrop is punctuated by magnificent gardens and fieldstone walls that decorate the

centuries-old wooded landscape. At each turn, there’s another naturally inspired photo opp and that’s by design. The Fosters became keenly aware of what sets one function facility apart from another a few years ago when Jay and his fiancée were planning their own wedding. They took that knowledge back to the Old Mill and made sure their venue and landscape represented the best that New England’s countryside has to offer— and it shows. Inside the substantial post-and-beam building, there’s a large stone fireplace that has been there since the saw mill days of the 1800s. It’s grand and it sets the tone for the amazing facility. The structure features 12 dining rooms that have all been recently renovated and are perfect for showers, rehearsal dinners, and other special events. Three of the rooms are substantial in size and ideal for receptions of 100 to 130 guests. The Old Mill offers a variety of packages, allowing couples to build the event of their dreams within their respective budgets. The facility is known for its tried-and-true traditional New England fare, including prime rib, haddock Newburg, and baked chicken, which are the most popular offerings. However, the staff works with couples to include offerings that suit their needs as well. It must be mentioned that guests rave about the Old Mill’s corn fritters and pecan rolls. Both menu items are made using the same secret recipes Mrs. Foster used back in the 1940s. Word has it, you can’t go wrong with a meal at the Old Mill. Being in the wedding business as long as they have, the Fosters have developed quite a list of recommended vendors that 62 Winter 2017

From photographers to bakers to everything in between, they work closely with couples planning every aspect of the day. There are two event planners who manage functions from start to finish and are on-site for the actual event, making sure everything runs smoothly and according to plan. Couples also have the use of a newly added bridal room that gives them and their bridal parties a place to get away and catch their breath as the events of the day unfold. The Old Mill hosted their first wedding 65 years ago. Today, the atmosphere is still as romantic and splendid as it ever

Polish Passions: What’s Trending in Manicures and More by Stacey Marcus
64 Winter 2017
BRIDE&GROOM
O
nce upon a time, getting a manicure was reserved for special
occasions like prom or your wedding day, however many of today’s brides (and grooms) enjoy manicures and pedicures as part of their weekly practice. While some things have changed in the world of manis and pedis, others have stayed the same.
Alexis Nguyen, owner of Nails & Co. Spa, says the one trend has stood the test of time is that brides continue to choose a French manicure for their wedding day. Thanks to innovations like gels and shellac, Nguyen notes, brides can enjoy flawless nails for a couple of weeks and also have beautiful embellishments like pearls, diamonds, and rosebuds sealed into their manicures. Nguyen says that since brides are already accustomed to getting manicures, they often indulge themselves to treatments like Nails & Co.’s TLC manicure and pedicure where they can add hot stones or paraffin. “It’s all about customization for the bride,” says Nguyen. At each of her five locations, special events can be created for the bridal party and guests from out of town. If the bride brings a sample of the bridesmaids’ dresses, Nguyen and her team can match the color and have bespoke bottles of nail color created for the brides maids. She turns to OPI to set the trend for color. OPI celebrity manicurist April Foreman shares the latest from this trendsetting line of nail polishes:
www.bridegroommag.com

“OPI has a created a polish/gel hybrid called Infinite Shine that combines the best of both technologies. It applies like polish, but has gel-like shine and staying power and removes with regular polish remover. Have it applied at your salon pre-wedding bridal bash and pick up a bottle to take with you on your honeymoon, “ says Foreman. As far as colors go, Foreman sees your wedding day as an opportunity to forego your everyday neutral shades and dress up your manicure with something a bit more special. “The latest Breakfast at Tiffany’s collection by OPI has the most amazing colors for brides—from the bachelorette party to the big day. The hue called I Believe in Manicures is the iconic Tiffany shade and could count as your something blue. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a gorgeous pearl with a bit of iridescence that’s sophisticated and ring worthy. I also love a bit of sparkle and shine to complement the ring. Wear it alone and layer until desired or swipe it over your favorite nude. In this case it’s best to coordinate the sparkle with the metal of the ring—something silver based for silver, gold for gold—or if you have a stone other than a diamond, choose a sparkle that matches. Ultimately, have fun and wear something fun and show-off worthy!’ says Foreman. Foreman also says that bridal party manicures are really anything goes. “For winter, moody tones are a good bet. Blues, grays, deep purples, and vamp. Black Dress Not Optional is a dramatic color that looks great on its own or dressed up with slick of sparkle. On the brighter side, the combination Girls Love Pearls layered with Sunrise…Bedtime! is playful and would look great while you’re making a toast,” advises Foreman. efreshed, renewed, renovated . . . Have you seen The Manor lately?
“Whatever you envision for your wedding day, we have the ability to make that a reality here!” That’s the mantra of The Manor in West Boylston, MA, where family owners have married a lifetime of food service and hospitality with an accommodating spirit. The Manor’s wedding and special events venue puts the needs of brides and grooms first accomplished in a stylish and modern facility, all while keeping costs down in a way that sets them apart from the rest.

Fourteen years ago, the Fotiadis family (two brothers and a sister who grew up in the food service industry) had a vision for an establishment of their own. Together they purchased a restaurant and small function facility, formerly known as the Franklin Manor. As new owners and operators, they began by dropping the Franklin portion of the name and simply became known as “The Manor.” Next they renovated the restaurant, creating a popular local destination for the community. Now it was time to take their vision to the next level, by building a grand function facility that would allow them to accommodate as many as 400 guests at a time. This flexible venue provides clients with the substantial yet intimate setting brides and grooms are looking for. Since then, The Manor has enjoyed a successful wedding and special event business over the years, hosting memorable, multicultural functions both big and small. Never satisfied with the status quo, and recognizing the importance of changing with the times, the Fotiadis family recently completed an extensive facelift that began three years ago. Their goal was to update The Manor with a focus on romance and elegance, while creating an adaptable space in a stylish atmosphere that would appeal to today’s brides and grooms. “Our facilities were fabulous, but the décor was starting to look dated and dark compared to what today’s couples are looking for. Now, with our recent renovations, I can’t imagine this look ever going out of style,” says Andrea Rotolo, event continued on page 70 www.bridegroommag.com

manager at The Manor. “We have designed the space to be tasteful and timeless to suit everyone’s needs. We can host an upscale traditional—or even a rustic feeling wedding—in any of our three ballrooms one day and the very next day it can be converted into a winter wonderland or even a Halloweenthemed wedding. The venue is really that versatile.” The wallpaper was stripped and everything was painted in neutral shades. Light and natural colors were chosen to create a blank canvas that will easily coordinate with any theme a couple chooses. Beautiful hardwood floors were installed where there was once an abundance of carpet, and in the ballroom, the dated seating was all replaced with top-of-the-line Chiavari chairs. The ceiling is now draped in organza fabric with twinkling lights throughout to create an unexpected and magical feel. In addition, there are crystal chandeliers and a dramatic spiral staircase in the lobby. The whole venue exudes romance and elegance, just as they planned. The building wasn’t the only thing that was overhauled at The Manor. There was once a choice of four wedding packages which has been streamlined into two: the Elite, and the A La Carte. This puts couples in the driver’s seat with regard to the unique wedding of their dreams, and most of all, their budget. The Elite has it all. This is the soup to nuts package with all the bells and whistles. This package affords couples the opportunity to have it all without holding back. But Andrea and her staff were seeing an increasing need for something more. Many of 70 Winter 2017

today’s brides and grooms want to build their own dream wedding from the ground up. They often have very strong opinions about what they want and don’t want, and they are frequently looking for more fiscally responsible choices, so a cookie-cutter package doesn’t always fit the bill. That’s why The Manor designed the A La Carte option and it has quickly become a fa-
“Whatever you envision for your wedding day, we have the ability to make that a reality here!” vorite. With meals as affordable as $26.95 per person, (which is almost unheard of these days), The Manor is showing love to “couples on a budget” and giving them an option that many of them didn’t even know existed. Want to bring in your own cake and centerpieces? That’s not a problem with the A La Carte package. Are the high-end table linens a line-item you can do without? That’s not an issue because with those beautiful Chiavari chairs, which are a part of every event at The Manor, your reception can still look like a million bucks. That’s the beauty of the A La Carte package; it’s completely scalable. You can go high-end, working with The Manor’s preferred vendors on what you like, and you can scale down, or completely eliminate what doesn’t work for you. With a new look and highly flexible options, it may seem like the Fotiadis’ have been reading your mind, but it’s really just a part of their original vision to make The Manor an all-inclusive wedding and event facility that appeals to everyone. Now that’s refreshing! Jennifer McNally Monac is a freelance writer and real estate agent, who lives and works on Cape Cod.

Multicultural Menus: Fusing Flavors to Savor by Stacey Marcus
Today’s couples bring a tapestry of heritages and culinary preferences to the wedding reception table. We asked chefs to share how they blend a variety of cultures and tastes to create the perfect wedding menu. Here’s what they had to say: Flexibility Is on the Menu “At Bistro du Midi, we never say no to a client’s menu request. Although we are known for our modern Provençal cuisine, our executive chef, Josue Louis, is happy to tailor a menu to a couple’s palette and cultural heritage. For a recent multicultural wedding, we created a beautiful Mocktail Bar as many guests did not drink alcohol. To lend a celebratory feel for this special occasion, we designed a beautiful display of assorted juices for guests to select from. Guests loved this extra thought-

ful touch. Some may be surprised to learn we’ve even rented an entire raw bar for a wedding. No matter the request, we are fully flexible,” says Sheila Marand, private event coordinator at Bistro du Midi. “Food is such a central part of the wedding and it can really transform the wedding experience, so we work very closely and carefully with our food and beverage team on every aspect of the menu. For example, Venezuelan couples often request tequeños and ayaca, which currently aren’t on our menus, but as long as we have the notice, we always make
sure to get the ingredients to incorporate these items into the menus,” says Romeo Penacino, complex executive chef at Aruba Marriott. His and Hers Cocktails TRADE recently held a wedding that united a bride from Connecticut and a groom from Honduras. The couple loved the food at TRADE, so chef de cuisine Cory Seeker didn’t need to prepare anything off the menu. The salmon poke with serrano, avocado, and plantain chips was very appealing to the Honduran guests.
Jeff Anderson, events and marketing manager for TRADE, had a grand time creating a custom cocktail for the couple, “One part that was a great blending of the two cultures was their “His and Hers” drinks. Our head bartender met with the couple in advance to learn their favorite flavor profiles and then created the His and Hers cocktails: Her drink was very New England—vodka, lime juice, and cranberry compote; his was rum, pineapple juice, and hibiscus with a jalapeño-infused simple syrup.” continued on page 74 www.bridegroommag.com

A Fusion of Flavors Chefs are crafting special menus to honor a multitude of cultures. “I wanted to create a wedding menu that was culturally diverse, fusing local Hawaiian ingredients with the vibrant flavors of South Asia,” says Andaz Maui’s executive chef, Isaac Bancaco, who created the property’s Hawaiian-Indian Fusion menu to honor the large number of Indian weddings that the property hosts. The special menu offers a wide range of cuisine ranging from pav bhaji to cinnamon malasadas. “We do have quite a few Indian couples who get married at the hotel, and they typically have elaborate weddings with a specific vision in mind for everything from decor to music to cuisine. As our menus at the hotel restaurants focus on Puerto Rican and American culinary specialties, oftentimes we won’t have Indian ingredients and spices, but we’re always happy to accommodate preferences and source those items. We know that every Indian wedding is different based on locality—every region has different spices and different spice levels in the cuisine, so that is always an important factor to keep in mind,” says Jorge Jara, banquet chef at San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. What,
No White?
by Cindy Papish Gerber
Here comes the bride, all dressed in pink. Or, silver, gold, bronze, blue, green—anything but white. More and more brides are abandoning the tradition of wearing a white or off-white wedding dress in favor of making a colorful statement.

“The majority of brides are staying away from wearing an all-white bridal gown,” says Shadia Velez, owner of Ve’Lace Bridal in Bellingham, MA. Velez repeatedly observes her customers backing off from their original inclination to dress in white. “They come into the store not realizing that white is as ‘white’ as it really is,” she explains. “I help them understand by pulling out a white dress next to an ivory one. Their usual reaction? “Wow! I didn’t realize white was so bright!’ And they promptly reverse course.” What’s really catching on in bridal wear is colored fabric underneath an ivory lace overlay. “Lace really pops against a color for an amazing contrast effect,” she says. “Designers are producing amazing gowns” using lace against colors such as light gold, blue, champagne, blush, and pewter.

Whether they’re taking cues from Hollywood weddings (Chrissy Teigen wearing red, Jessica Biel in pink, or Jessica Simpson in gold, to name a few) or simply expressing creativity, brides no longer yearn to be a vision in white. “Today’s bride is connected to social media and has the world of fashion at her fingertips 24/7,” says Martin Thornburg, head designer at David Tutera for Mon Cheri Bridals. “Although she may not copy a celebrity’s wedding style from head to toe, she’s savvy enough to take bits and pieces of inspiration from her favorite celebrities and fashion bloggers to make them her own.” In addition, “stark white does not complement most skin tones,” notes Thornburg. “With the recent increase of dresses offered in colors other than white, brides have a ton of options to choose from that will make them look and feel gorgeous.” “Unless you have a medium to darker complexion,” says Lynn Carbonneau, of Elegance by Carbonneau, “white can be tough to pull off. It can really wash out a fair-skinned bride and make her look tired. She’s recently noticed that, “champagne and blush-tinted bridal gowns are hugely popular right now. The cool part is they look good on everyone!”

Long before Christine Britt walked down the aisle to marry Andrew Leeman on September 10, 2016, she knew, “I really wanted to wear pink on my wedding day.” She needed little convincing to purchase a blush pink, drop-waist, beaded Casablanca ball gown from Elegance by Carbonneau. “My mom was a different story,” Christine recalls. “She had her heart set on white, but once I tried on some white dresses and she saw them on me, she came around. I am pretty fair-skinned but my hair is really dark, so the white didn’t look as good as the pink.” After trying on a few champagne-colored gowns, Christine felt “lucky enough to have Lynn” suggest pink. “They didn’t have the dress in stock, but she just knew what I had in mind, had it shipped so I could try it on… and she was right!” This “perfect” dress reflected Christine’s personal style. It photographed beautifully as a focal point alongside her bridesmaids’ charcoal gray dresses and among the elegant surroundings of her reception space at Worcester’s Tuckerman Hall. 80 Winter 2017

A smart, “always lovely” way to add a bit of color, “is to wear colored shoes” observes Thornburg, in addition to donning, “colorful jewelry, flowers, a purse/clutch or a cover-up in the same tone as your wedding colors to tie the entire theme together.” He also acknowledges that “Conventional brides will continue to gravitate towards traditional ivory and pastel shades, while avant-garde brides who want to make a fashion statement have many more options.” And if the bride’s close family members aren’t pleased with her choice of a pink, purple, or bedazzled rainbow dress? “We remind them that it’s still the bride’s special day,” offers Velez. “Once they see how happy that bride is in her wedding dress, the beauty of the color and happiness of the bride shines through.”

The Modern Rehearsal Dinner:
Your Questions Answered by Connie Jeske Crane Traditionally, rehearsal dinners serve a very simple purpose: “The point of the rehearsal dinner is, you’re all getting together to rehearse the wedding anyway, so you might as well have dinner together the night before. That’s where it came from,” says Lizzie Post, a great-great-granddaughter of etiquette maven Emily Post and co-author of Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th Edition. But wait, you’re probably thinking, haven’t I attended rehearsal dinners that felt more like a party than a low-key dinner? Alexis Eliopoulos O’Mara of Bostonbased Unique Weddings by Alexis confirms that the rehearsal dinner format has seen some wild pendulum swings in recent years. Today she sees about half of couples opting for the traditional dinner format. And what about the other half? They’re gleefully adding visiting friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, and workmates into the mix. “Some of them go big,” says Eliopoulos O’Mara. To get a bit more clarity on how to plan the rehearsal dinner, we talked with Post and Eliopoulos O’Mara about modern etiquette. Here’s what they had to say in response to some commonly asked questions: OK, who absolutely needs to be invited to the rehearsal dinner? “Typically rehearsal dinners are only for those who are in the wedding party,” says Post. “And then grandparents would be invited, so very, very close family members, or you might invite godparents and grandparents but not necessarily aunts and uncles and cousins.” In addition, Post says, 84 Winter 2017

have the funds for it, there are a lot of fun things like the New England Aquarium, Fenway Park—those kinds of really cool places where the venue itself is entertainment . . . I see that a lot when that fits in the budget.” Another trend Eliopoulos O’Mara sees is a more casual approaches to the menu—clambakes and buffets— and time afterwards spent relaxing with guests at a pub, outdoor patio, or other comfortable location.
you should invite your wedding officiant and his or her spouse. Eliopoulos O’Mara agrees, saying everyone at your rehearsal should be invited to dinner afterwards. “If you need them at the rehearsal, how would you not invite them to a rehearsal dinner?” The possible exception here, she adds, is young children. As for out-of-town guests, Post says there’s no obligation. “Everyone thinks you’re supposed to invite your out-oftown guests, which is not true at all.” At the same time, Post advises that you provide out-of-towners with good restaurant recommendations and other helpful information so they enjoy their stay.
You just don’t want it to feel like a competition.”
Who pays for the rehearsal dinner?
Rehearsal Dinners—Things to Avoid
I have friends flying across the country for my wedding. Can I invite them?
“The groom’s family still traditionally pays,” says Post, but adds other arrangements can also be acceptable, “As long as the couple and the parents who are involved are all comfortable with what’s been decided upon.”
• Don’t make the rehearsal dinner so lavish that it overshadows your big day.
From an etiquette standpoint, there’s nothing wrong with expanding the party per se, says Post. But she cautions against extravagance. “Don’t let it overshadow the big day. That would be especially true if you are going the traditional route where the bride’s family is hosting and paying for the wedding, and the groom’s family is hosting and paying for the dinner.
What is the etiquette for invitations? Invitations to the rehearsal dinner can be mailed, or you can use the telephone to invite people too, says Post, adding “Emailed invitations are not recommended because they don’t have enough ‘oomph’ for the event and can easily go astray in cyberspace.” As for timing, Post says you should send out rehearsal dinner invitations well in advance so guests can plan their travel. “Send them at the same time as, or just after wedding invitations have been mailed.”
Do we have to hold it at a restaurant or are there other fun options? Apart from restaurants, Eliopoulos O’Mara says couples can have some fun with the agenda and venues. “When they
