Most recently, we have found our new local engagements section,Tying the Knot, has proven to be just as popular. As the second decade of the 21st century gets underway, we want to include you—particularly your planning stories, your advice and your photos—even more.That is why we hope you will contribute to the articles we have planned for upcoming issues. After all, who better to share insight and ideas than you, the brides- and grooms-to-be of today? For example, if you have a unique design concept for nuptial programs, innovative theme ideas for a bridal shower (either for one you are planning or one you have attended) or have conceived of a knock-out color palette as the backdrop for your wedding—and want to share them—we have a great opportunity for you. Our upcoming Spring 2010 issue will be featuring each of these topics (and more). Dramatic centerpieces will be the subject of a pictorial planned for our Fall 2010 issue, and we will be sharing stories about second- and third-time weddings.We also thought we would lighten things up a bit by taking a humorous look at wedding-day mishaps. Wedding-day details
How they got engaged Tony and Theona’s relationship began when they met at Salem State College. After graduating in 2005, they commuted between Worcester and Bradford, where they each were living. Two years later, for Valentine’s Day, Tony took Theona back to their alma mater to reminisce about their courtship. It was during this visit that Tony proposed on bended knee in a spot they used to frequent. “I was shocked and extremely happy, of course,” recalls Theona.
Preparations Planning for their summer event fell primarily to Theona, but she did enlist help from family, close girlfriends and her groom-to-be. “I felt it was best to delegate certain jobs to Tony,” she says. “In fact, when we first began brainstorm18 Winter

This couple knew early on that they wanted a summer event on a Saturday evening at a venue replete with natural beauty;Tower Hill Botanic Garden fit the bill. “The ceremony took place in The Secret Garden, which was perfect because of its privacy and beautiful features,” describes Theona. “Large arbors stand tall over a peaceful fountain with a large stone stairway opening to the lawn, which made for a dramatic entrance.” To honor the memory of Tony’s grandparents, who had both passed away recently, the couple released sixty butterflies during the ceremony. Afterward, guests were guided to the Farm House Patio for cocktails before moving to the reception in The Orangerie, which was illuminated magnificently. A modern interpretation of an 18th-century-style greenhouse, this structure also acts as the winter home of many of Tower Hill’s lush foliage, making the facility a year-round horticultural experience. Live entertainment played a key role throughout the day. A classical guitarist and flute player were on hand for the ceremony while a jazz duo entertained during the cocktail hour.And as a surprise for the bride, who was born in Hawaii and has many relatives there, Theona’s mother, cousins and aunts sang the Hawaiian wedding song a capella, while another aunt performed the hula. “This is a beautiful Hawaiian tradition that most of our guests had not ever seen or heard. Everyone was amazed and touched by my family’s heartfelt gift, and it was so special to have a part of my Hawaiian culture at my wedding,” says Theona.

The meal had a distinct seafood theme with offerings of New England clam chowder, steamed littleneck clams with drawn butter and steamed Maine lobster as the main course. “With so many relatives visiting from out of state, we thought having lobsters would be such a treat. It was so much fun seeing them donning lobster bibs, just digging in!” Salads made from fresh native vegetables were also served. Place cards that coordinated with the wedding invitations were displayed in terra cotta pots filled with wheat grass that Tony and Theona had grown themselves. Lobster-claw wine stoppers personalized with the couple’s names and wedding date complemented the culinary and regional theme.
Favorite part of the day While it was difficult for Theona to settle on one moment as the most memorable, she was particularly excited about her and Tony’s introduction as husband and wife. “It felt so amazing to run into the room after the band introduced us,” she recalls. “Seeing our friends and family clapping and cheering was truly special.” Running a close second was the moment she and Tony first saw each other that day. “We chose to take our photographs together prior to the ceremony so we would be able to spend time with our friends and family during cocktail hour. We met in one of the gardens at the Tower Hill.The photographers helped to position Tony and even cue him to close his eyes as I snuck up on him!”
Advice “My advice to other couples is that they do whatever they want,” suggests Theona. “Forget about what’s typically done or what is traditional.Your wedding will be truly memorable if it genuinely reflects you—the couple everyone is there to celebrate.” B&G

Their story Sarah was set up with her future husband by her uncle, who also happened to be in the Army National Guard with Dave. Sharing a mutual enthusiasm for Harley Davidson motorcycles, the couple really hit it off. After Dave’s proposal at the conclusion of a Kid Rock concert, which happened to fall between Sarah’s birthday andValentine’s Day, the couple quickly decided on marrying during the upcoming summer for two important reasons. “We met in the summer, so it seemed appropriate to marry then,” says Sarah. “We also wanted to be married before Dave’s deployment the following January.”
Planning With just six months to plan, Sarah enlisted the help of a “committee” that included a professional planner as well as her mother, sisters and Dave. “I tried to include him as much as possible, if not for final decisions then at least for his opinions,” recalls Sarah. Originally planning for a Saturday night, the couple opted to move their event to a Friday evening in order to secure the facility and music vendor they wanted.
Wedding-day details Theme elements centering on the couple’s love of Harley Davidson, the bride’s Irish heritage and her favorite color (purple), as well as summertime fun, were present in many aspects of the wedding. The cake topper, for 22 Winter
2010
example, was shaped like a Claddagh ring, which was also used in the couple’s wedding bands. Adjacent to the cake were the toppers from Sarah’s shower and the rehearsal dinner cakes, both motorcycles. Dave complemented his beige linen suit with an orange Harley Davidson tie and a pair of brown Converse sneakers while Sarah’s custom-made dress featured “flames” appliquéd onto the back. The bride’s bouquet was fashioned with purple and white daisies as well as orange lilies, which tied in with the orange of the Harley Davidson logo. The wedding program was also adorned with purple daisies. As one of the couple’s photographers from Shooting Star Photography has a signature photo of a newly-married couple riding away on a motorcycle, Sarah and Dave were excited at the prospect of creating a similar shot for their wedding album. As Dave’s motorcycle was in need of repair, Sarah had hoped to have the bike fixed in time for their wedding.

Unfortunately, it was not possible. Knowing how much it would mean to them to have this photo, two of the couple’s vendors—their wedding planner and invitation provider, who are members of the New England Wedding Professionals group—worked together to arrange for another motorcycle to arrive at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Favorite moment For Sarah, turning the corner with her father and seeing Dave was a memorable moment. “As we were about to walk down the aisle, Dave and I locked eyes—at least until the guests stood up and blocked the view!” laughs Sarah.
Advice “My advice would be to listen and be open to suggestions,” says Sarah. “Your mom and the wedding planner have been there before, so guess what? They might just know what they are talking about!” B&G

The proposal One-hundred and forty-five days.That’s how much time Kris took to arrange the perfect proposal. Nantucket would be the place, as he and Tara had spent much time there during their courtship, and May would be the date. But the actual when and how would require careful planning so that Kris could make this as wonderful as it could be. “I decided on the date, but there was so much to do,” recalls Kris. “I also had to ask her parents’ blessing, design the ring and buy the stone. It was a journey, to say the least.” That journey culminated with an elaborate proposal involving several days, a decadent restaurant, a beach, a boat and some books—including a journal that documented the proposal plans as a keepsake for Tara, and three planning-related guides. As the phrasing of this all-important question needed to be just right, Kris practiced over and over and over.“I must have rehearsed it 1,000 times in the shower during those months leading up to the proposal,” he recalls. Yet even with so much attention to detail, Kris still found himself making last-minute adjustments the night before. “I had planned to propose at a restaurant, but thought that if we had some time alone on the beach first she would have time to pull herself together before we got town.” So, on the drive to the restaurant Kris suggested they stop at the beach to take some pictures, never expecting to come across multiple roads being repaired. Undeterred, he found a way to Surfside Beach, where he sur26 Winter

prised Tara with a heartfelt and emotional proposal. “She had no idea and was caught off guard. I asked her to please say yes because she never looked at the ring and just started crying!” Once she accepted, phone calls to waiting parents were made before part two of the proposal plan was put into effect: a private, scenic boat ride (“the sunset was unreal!”) to TheWauwinet for a romantic dinner.The crying had stopped by then, but only temporarily as one look at the engagement ring brought more tears of joy to Tara’s eyes. After settling in at a table by the fire, the couple regrouped. Kris then presented his now bride-to-be with the keepsake journal, which prompted a few more emotional moments, the planning books and even a tentative date for their wedding—almost one year to that day.“I understand that the bride should be taking the leading roll when it comes to planning,” says Kris. “But we know each other so well, I knew that’s what she would have wanted, and I wanted to make a splash. It was a moment in my life I will never forget.”

Wedding-day details As a nod to their special engagement, Tara and Kris wanted to bring a Nantucket theme to their wedding without being to beach-y. Colors were white, silver/grey and fuchsia. Names of Nantucket towns were used to designate each table while sand dollars and shells (collected by the couple) were incorporated with the flowers. The card table was artfully arranged with grass and rocks to impart a natural outdoors feeling under the tent.
Favorite part of the day According to both Tara and Kris, their favorite part of the day was when they made their vows. “We never looked away from each other and said them without error,” says Tara. “The sun started to shine brightly on the altar when we were reciting them to one another. It was quite an emotional experience.”

Making preparations was a true family affair, with everyone from the couple to their mothers to the bride’s sister having an equal share in the planning. “Kris, in particular, loved being a part of things, in both budgeting and working with outside contractors,” says Tara. And with several planning books already in hand, they were well equipped to

omething could go wrong. Dreadfully wrong. You feel it so acutely it’s keeping you up at night. The flowers might not arrive on time. Heck, the groom might not arrive on time... or at all, and then you’ve got bigger problems than the flowers. Sarah (Puccio) Bouchard’s groom did show. But when you ask her if the planning process for the wedding was filled with anxiety, she gives an emphatic, “Yes!” Married this past September in Cotuit, Massachusetts, the reception was held at The Overbrook House on Buzzard’s Bay. Originally wanting a backyard type of wedding, the Bouchards did the next best thing and rented an incredible house to throw a party replete

While it turned out to be a beautiful and fantastic event, it wasn’t always smooth sailing to get to Buzzard’s Bay. “This wedding was arguably the most anxious time of my life,” says Bouchard,“And what is so striking to me about this fact is that I was so resistant to stress in the first place.We chose a wedding that was, by default, casual, fun and unpretentious. We never presumed that it would be ‘the most perfect day of our lives’
or expected the kind of gilded flawlessness that so many brides hedge their bets on.”
Things to consider Planning a wedding, as anyone who has done it will tell you, is creating a party of a lifetime, or at least one of its bigger ones. For most, it’s an event they have been thinking about for years, even before meeting the loves of their lives. The bar is high for this event to be picture perfect, so for many, the

anxiety over hitting that bar can create issues and complications that weren’t part of those childhood dreams. “People may say they realize that the ceremony is not the marriage,” says Shel Miller, PhD.“However, perfectionism about that special day can create stress.” Dr. Miller, who is a marriage, family, divorce and executive coach practicing in Boston, specializes in building relationships that restore joy and meaning. “I have seen many couples whose issues range from mild to bad,” says Miller. “It can be both physically and emotionally exhausting to plan [a wedding], especially without either physical or financial help from extended family.” Sometimes, planning a wedding can stir up all sorts of malfunctions within our psyche. A history of fainting, fears of throwing up or being in front of crowds, or even panic attacks often contribute to anxiety, according to Jeffrey Brown, PsyD, an instructor at the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and in private practice in Arlington, Massachusetts. Clients who come in specifically around wedding planning fall into two categories, according to Carmen Brenes Jette, PhD, a clinical psychologist with a practice in Newton, Massachusetts, and a teacher for Culture InSight: There are those who have lived together, or have who have dated for a long time, and those with more “challenging” issues. For example, Dr. Jette has dealt with same-sex couples who are not yet “out” to their extended families. Other couples with different faiths may be anxious about the “how” and “if ” scenarios a wedding can present. Second marriages, which blend families, sometimes include dealing with an ex-spouse or require sensitivity for the children and family of a deceased spouse.
How to combat the stress The stressors that may be weighing you down are not insurmountable.Therapists use a variety of techniques to help their patients alleviate the burden that anxiety can cause. Talking is often the biggest step to facing, and sorting out, issues surrounding the impending wedding. According to the experts, it can immediately eliminate the isolation that worry tends to instigate. Also important is keeping details in perspective.
A Special Setting for Your Special Event
“I often hear complaints that the ceremony or honeymoon plans are changed, rearranged or added to right up until the wedding, just so they’ll be perfect,” says Dr. Brown. “It’s helpful to set wedding plans in motion, including meeting deadlines, while leaving room to enjoy days or even weeks before the ceremony.” Countless magazine articles and books now promote the ways to combat anxiety through calming techniques, such as taking long, deep breaths. Brown reminds us that basic cognitive skills such as visualization, relaxation and self talk can be extremely useful coping mechanisms during the actual ceremony and rehearsal.Take a moment to slow down and tell yourself that everything will work out fine. Another beneficial way to beat stress is to rehearse specific components of the event that are particularly concerning, such as the dance or the vows, on a regular basis. Practice will make perfect (or close to it) and will add confidence. “This can be a great antidote to some anxiety or fears,” says Brown. And lastly, but perhaps most importantly, Brown says to take a personal inventory to see if there is absolutely any other reason you are not ready to get married. “It’s normal to have doubts or feel hesitant,” he says. “Really, you are changing your life forever. It’s a good idea to understand where those thoughts and feelings come from if you can.” Miller concurs, “We are talking about an iconic day that, unbeknownst to many, represents the metaphorical release of one’s single adolescent years and freedoms, and the transferring of emotional loyalties to one’s partner away from one’s prior significant others. So any unfinished business from the past will often be projected onto the new partner and patterns you are recreating from the past.” B&G

Party hearty Michele Vaccarello, a maid-of-honor who recently planned a party in Cincinnati, Ohio, says this was the main goal for her friend and bride-to-be. “We wanted to give her one last weekend with her best friends before we call her ‘Mrs.’ Here, she could be the center of attention and remember those college days when everyone was single and when dancing
with your hands flailing over your head was the sexiest thing around.” The festivities included a retro prom night themed cocktail party, beach volleyball competition, selfdesigned handbag party and dinner at a dueling piano bar.This was a way for the bride to bond with her wedding party and reconnect with old friends who had scattered across the country after college. Susan Southerland, president of Just Marry!, a wedding coordinating company
based in the Southeast, says the trend of elaborate and destination bachelorette parties has emerged among the latest generation of brides walking down the aisle. “Their friends are actually more influential than their families because they’ve spent so much time with them,” she explains. “This trend is an extension of that—the fact that the bride wants to go away, enjoy the company of her wedding party and friends, and be able to have a good, relaxing time.”

Getting personal The stereotypical bachelorette party is becoming passé as brides are opting for more personalized celebrations. Recently, one group of friends combined parties to form one huge bash. Martina Rodriguez, a bridesmaid who returned from a party in Dallas, Texas, recalls a group of 10 who reunited during a weekend of power shopping, dinner and drinks, and a night of dancing. “Two of the other girls were also getting married, so we combined the celebrations, relaxed and just had fun!” Themed parties are also gaining popularity. Southerland planned a Sex and the City party for a recent client. “The bride flew her wedding party, mom and mother-in-law to New York City and visited the various locations from the show—the stores, restaurants and clubs.” Another option is to stay closer to home. Some companies now offer several types of “experience” gift certificates, with the most popular themes including at-home spa days, where you can sip champagne while being pampered with facials, pedicures and manicures; wine tasting parties; and for those adventurous types, white-water rafting. For real dare-devils, a NASCAR training session will let you take the wheel at speeds of 160 miles per hour. Several companies, such as ExtravaGift and Great American Days, provide all accommodations and services and pride themselves on providing creative alternatives to the “typical” bachelorette events.
Jet-setting Besides themed options, brides are using their bachelorette party as a choice getaway to relax. Bride-to-be Liz Dawson is currently planning a trip to Acapulco for her group of friends. “I’m using the opportunity to spend time with my girls and have a little fun before the stress of wedding planning takes over.” Hawaii is another popular destination for girl getaways. Aqua Hotels & Resorts offers “Divine Diva” packages that include threeand-a-half hours of total pampering at the spa each day, daily breakfast and special gifts for all the gals. If you’re game, you can even take in a surfing lesson with one of Honolulu’s offduty city firefighters. Then there’s Las Vegas. “It’s not the old Vegas that was centered on gambling,” says

Start on a good note Your wedding-day entertainment sets the tone for love, joy and celebration, whether it is for the ceremony, reception or even the rehearsal dinner. Following a few guidelines and tips will help ensure that the choices you make will be just right. Preceding the procession Ceremony music is an integral part of the wedding, as it reflects the many emotions of the day, and may require selections for the prelude when guests arrive, including the processional when you make your entrance, the interlude for any important moments, and the recessional when you take your first official steps as a married couple. In deciding what type of music is right for you, take a look at your location. A church or hall would provide a great atmosphere for an organ or piano, while a smaller indoor or

outdoor setting might be more tailored for a cello or harp. Although tradition does play a key role, keep in mind what you like; if you’re not one for the organ pipes, booking a string quartet might suit your personality better. “Good entertainment will advise you on what usually works best, but will not be too influential,” says Dave Zeger, owner of Dave Zeger Entertainment in Houston,Texas. “The key is having music that reflects the couple’s personality.”

When booking your entertainment specialist(s), stick to what, or rather who, you know. Take recommendations from friends, family and your contacts at your reception location. Once you have decided on the type of music and on a performer (after listening to them live, of course), set up an appointment to determine the details, including start time, attire, song selection and any special requests that would have to be learned prior to the date.

Another key tip, according to Zeger, is to plan the music at least six weeks in advance and have the performers arrive at least an hour before the ceremony. The most common mistake brides and grooms make on the big day that affects the music, is not starting on time. “This makes the music playing harder and we often run out of music and repeat pieces,” Zeger says.You can expect to pay from between $700 to $900 for a string quartet for a half-hour worth of guest seating and a 45-minute ceremony. A safe guideline to remember for cost is $150 per instrument piece.

The reception is the time and place to celebrate and play the music that reflects who you are as a couple while allowing your guests to relax and have fun.Your first decision here is your preference for a band, DJ or simply recorded music. DJs can cost less than a band, however, the quality usually determines pricing. JimWeisz of Discovery DJs in Dallas,Texas, advises budgeting for entertainment based on priority, as you would with the rest of your wedding planning. “If having fun at the reception is important to you, entertainment should be near the top of your list,” he says. “You should be ready to pay for quality entertainment.” Whether you decide on a band or DJ, there are several key points to consider, such as what type of entertainment you would like— interactive with games and props or little interaction with the entertainer simply announcing important events during the reception. Once you’ve booked an entertainer, walk through your reception plan and make any changes, which can include the order of traditional moments such as the first dances, cake-cutting and the bouquet ceremony. Weisz says it is important that your entertainment coordinates with the photographer, videographer and hall manager on the big day. “This will eliminate the possibility of the photographer being out the room when you are cutting the cake, ruining a perfect photo opportunity.” Dinner entertainment is also a key talking point. One trend is to show a video or photo montage set to music during dinner. If this is

an option you plan to have, ask your entertainer if a screen and projector can be provided. Another trend is to create a lounge environment with the background music during the cocktail hour and dinner. It is also important to provide your entertainer with the names of everyone in your party, complete with pronunciation and their relationship to you, for your entrance announcements. This will help keep the reception flowing without interruption. As with
your ceremony, discuss entertainment attire, time of arrival and, most importantly, make sure they fit your personality and understand their level of interaction during the event.
Song selection Once the reception order and dinner preferences are settled, the song selection for the dancing portion is your next challenge. According to Susan Criner of Gulf Coast Entertainment in Houston, Texas, the music
of Motown continues to be popular and gets all ages on to the dance floor. “Although we’ve recently seen an increasing number of requests for ’80s hits and cover bands,” Criner says. Most DJs or bands will have a song list from which you can make your selections, and often will offer to find or learn a specific song for the event if notified in advance. Although most entertainment companies will allow you to select songs, some may limit the amount of songs they have to play. Others, however, allow you to personalize your entire reception song by song. If there are songs you absolutely don’t want to hear, be sure to include those, too. One hiring option is to consider working with an agency.Agencies not only provide the music, but also take care of any stages required, electrical needs, hospitality for the band, room access and more. Samantha Baker and Trent Walker booked a band through an agency and only needed to send in special song requests for their wedding celebration. “For those who don’t want to worry about the band’s needs while worrying about the ceremony and trying to enjoy the day, an agency is definitely the way to go,” Baker says. “Everything was taken care of and we just needed to arrive and have fun.”

t is not every day that a Yankee gets engaged to a Southern belle. After a courtship that began in Virginia and included Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island before ending in Massachusetts, I had spent lots of time south of the Mason-Dixon Line.As fate would have it, my fiancĂŠe Angela was from Concord, North Carolina, so our pronunciation of KAN-kid created immediate debates with my soon-to-be father-in-law. (Needless to say, the discussion ends whenever I point out which town was settled first.)

I learned the differences between Wampus Kitty and the Side Hill Hoofer. I knew that red-eyed gravy was made with coffee, that grits were both a breakfast food and an acronym (Girls Raised In the South) and that the plural form of y’all is all y’all. Having mastered those regional nuances, I figured planning a wedding in our Cape Cod town ofWellfleet would be a walk in the park. So Angela and I chose early spring, a time of rebirth, growth and development. To us, everything made sense… that is, until we announced our idea to family and friends. “Good call,” my friend said,“gray and rainy, just after mud season. I hope Angela will be wearing a brown wedding dress to hide the dirt.” “The Cape opens after Memorial Day. Nothing is open off-season.” “What hotels are open then? Where will we stay?” From the sounds of it, I would have had an easier time finding Sweet Tea in the North than planning an off-season wedding on the Cape.Yet after successfully navigating through the pitfalls of a long-distance and regionally diverse relationship, there had to be a way to resolve these issues. The answer was as simple as this southeastern conference motto: keep a winning game plan, change a losing game plan. Our strengths were diverse—in a nutshell,Yankee ingenuity and Southern charm—so we played to them, starting with what we knew best. Angela and I were already members at the First Congregational Church in Wellfleet, so

asking our friend and pastor Ken Roscoe to officiate was the first order of business. A fringe benefit was that the church itself is as old and as beautiful as any. Add to that a couple of incredibly talented musicians from our church choir, organist Brad Williams and harpist Thom Dutton, and the sacred part of our wedding was covered. We’d even get to ring the bells to announce our marriage. Next, we wrote our own invitations and announcements.With the help of Pastor Ken, we

also composed our wedding vows and customized our ceremony in keeping with liturgical traditions.We even created our programs so our guests could follow along.After all, those English degrees had to be good for something. We wanted our reception to have a view of the water, and the Chequessett Yacht and Country Club was the perfect location. An added bonus was that my friends and I could see one of our favorite fishing and hunting spots through the window. Reven

Oliver, director of operations, was practically our wedding planner; in addition to coordinating our reception, she recommended Shannon Mahoney of Sumptuous Catering and Kim Reilly at Studio K Photography. Our off-season wedding now worked to our advantage as our vendors had plenty of free time to spend with us. The caterer prepared an array of delicious appetizers, including maki rolls, grilled baby lamb chops with minted garlic oil, and scallion crepes with roasted duck, followed by an entrée of grilled lobster tails and tenderloin. In keeping with our natural surroundings we chose to adorn the church and reception hall with items found locally, namely sand dollars, sea stars and sea scallop shells.With help from Sheila at Kelley’s Flowers we added Sweet Peas, Delphiniums, Asters and Hydrangeas to the wedding décor and for replanting later on. Many of these flowers now grow in our yard. Tradition calls for a white wedding cake, but we were conflicted. Our love of chocolate knows no boundaries, so we turned to Marc at the Cottage Street Bakery to disguise true chocolate decadence with a classic butter cream frosting. In essence we had our cake and ate it, too. Angela is thoroughly high-tech, which was a distinct advantage when it came to music for dinner and dancing. She downloaded tracks ranging from classic Big Band, Swing and Classical to Rock and Pop, and arranged playlists thematically with all phases of the reception in mind. With no lodging available and lots of outof-town guests, we turned to our friend Judi Peters, owner of Wellfleet Real Estate. She found us an enormous cottage overlooking Wellfleet Harbor that was perfectly suitable for entertaining and accommodating. For our rehearsal dinner, we planned outdoor guest activities that would do double duty: Everyone dug and shucked oysters and littlenecks that were later served as fried clams and oysters, and at a raw bar.We added scallops wrapped in bacon, clam chowder and appetizers of pasta with white clam sauce.You get the picture. When it came to the wedding day, we favored a natural approach to photography. Yet the week before our wedding,Angela had a portrait taken in a variety of seaside settings complete with fancy hair, her wedding dress and cowboy boots.

Every wedding has a hitch, but in our case, it was just the actual “getting hitched.� Even our bird dog Ocracoke joined us, dressing for the occasion by donning a corsage along with her blazing orange hunting collar. As for the weather? The weeks before and after our wedding were cold, gray, windy and rainy, and our honeymoon flight was the last to leave Logan Airport before it was shut down due to high winds. New England clambake They are the iconic images that lure millions to this little corner of the world every year: church steeples rising above the foliage, the sweeping sea and a bright red lobster with hot, melted butter nearby. For couples welcoming a large portion of their friends and family to our neck of the woods, nothing beats a toast to our heritage with a traditional clambake. Most local clambake companies or caterers make quite an ordeal of the cooking process, which includes lobsters, steamers, crabs or mussels baked in the ground on a bed of seaweed. A night in Havana For a celebration with some international flavor, recreate the heat of Havana, Cuba. Newport, Rhode Island FAIRY TALES CAN AND DO COME TRUE AT BELCOURT CASTLE, an impressive 60-room chateau built in 1891 in mansion-laden Newport, Rhode Island, during the Gilded Age. Originally designed as a stately bachelor pad for owner Oliver Belmont, this 17th century, King Louis XIII inspired hunting lodge replica exudes the romance of a bygone era throughout its ballrooms and banquet halls. As you enter the gates and stroll through the beautiful halftimbered courtyard, it is easy to see why Belcourt Castle was built for entertaining. Connecticut River in East Haddam sits Gillette Castle. The former home of actor and playwright William Gillette, infamous for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage in the late 19th and 20th centuries, is a massive field stone mansion is reminiscent of a medieval castle. Today it is part of a 184-acre Connecticut state park. The current rate to rent the terrace/porch area, which is available from June through September excluding holiday weekends, is $285. Guests taking the Chester-Hadlyme ferry ($3 per vehicle) across the Connecticut River to access the castle will be able to watch its grandeur rise before their eyes and have captivating views of the valley as well.

nuptials, look no further than the Hammond Castle Museum. This impressive Gothic-style castle, once a home to prolific inventor John Hays Hammond Jr., an avid collector of Roman, Medieval and Renaissance artifacts, is an idyllic setting for a 15th century-inspired nuptial gala. “There is not much you have to do here for a medieval-style wedding,” says Linda Rose, the museum’s functions director. “The atmosphere for such an event is already in place.” Couples married here have often encouraged their guests to don period attire. Recently, one bride’s parents were dressed as royally as a king and queen. Some grooms and groomsmen have been known to wear medieval-inspired outfits—even a suit of armor!—and brandish swords while brides have personalized a modern-day gown by donning an elegant cape for the reception.The castle theme is easily conveyed through other elements, such as placecard holders and even the wedding cake. Keep in mind that you will be renting a fully-functioning museum with regularly scheduled hours and events, so your wedding festivities can begin no earlier than 6 p.m. and must end by 11 p.m.The rental fee for inside the castle or use of the ocean-side lawn is $950 per hour (three-hour minimum), Friday through Sunday. An interior rental includes use of the resplendent great hall featuring a colossal pipe organ, a tastefully appointed Renaissance dining room and a lovely indoor courtyard.The guest capacity at the museum is 90 for a sit-down dinner or buffet, 100 for a cocktail reception and 120 for a seated lawn reception.The rental fee also includes one half hour of rehearsal time if your wedding ceremony is scheduled at the castle. Picture perfect True, a standard guestbook is a great way for friends and family to share congratulations and some marriage wisdom, but why not consider a more hands-on approach that will keep them entertained as well? Photo booths have become an increasingly popular wedding-day element that provide lasting images that will forever make you smile.
“We saw photo booths set up at our friend’s parties and events and people always had lots of fun, so we decided to have one at our wedding,” say newlyweds Fei and Kevin Jolly. The couple turned to their photographer, Jen Zenobia of Zenobia Photography Studios in Rhode Island to create a live “photo station” in a hallway between the dinning room and dance floor that guests could visit throughout the reception. Zenobia stocked the simple white fabric-covered space with costumes and accessories, including cowboy hats, fedoras, fans, boas and mustaches, for guests to play with. “We loved the mustaches,” recalls Fei. “Guests were going nuts with the costumes and we all had a blast.” The photos were mounted in a guestbook and guests were able to obtain copies online after the wedding. “It is not only a great idea to add fun things to do at the party; it is also a great

way to have pictures of guests, which made our guestbook so much more special.” Boston Photobooth Rental delivers, programs, manages and removes their oldfashion style photo booth at events, including weddings, throughout New England. “It has that feel of when people used to get in a photo booth on the boardwalk; people like the squeezing in part,” says owner Sean Cruise. “It always makes for some interesting candids.” After your photo session, the booth prints a 4" x 6" with three images on either side of the couple’s name and monogram or design motif. “We work with each client to create an insignia that’s tailored to them,” says Cruise, who can either create a look complementing the wedding or use pre-existing graphics, such as a monogram or icon, direct from the invitation or save-the-date card. One side of the strip then gets placed into a keepsake scrapbook for the couple, and the remaining strip with the design is kept by guests as a favor. A booth attendant takes care of the scrapbook and guests are invited to visit the booth as many times as they want during the wedding.

The finer things Wedding planner Raina Dawn Dieterle has worked with brides and grooms who have considered hiring a live painter for their wedding. “I think a live painter is a fabulous,‘outof-the-box’ idea that provides not just an
amazing keepsake, but an experience for the guests,� says Dieterle. Consider commissioning a local artist, such as Boston-based Dianne Panarelli Miller, to capture the ceremony or reception on canvas. He or she can set up in plain view and will certainly be a conversation piece for friends and family. “Usually at the wedding, the guests are stunned and totally entertained.They love it,� says Miller, who has traveled regionally to cap-

Center stage Oftentimes, throughout the lunch, brunch or dinner courses of the reception, light music is played by the DJ or bands take their break.As time is tight at a reception, this “down time� is perfect for running that slide show you’ve worked on. Or, you could even include a cultural celebration. Think Irish step-dancers, Chinese dragons, a taste of Bollywood or lederhosen-clad German dancers. Whatever is meaningful to you will be exciting to share with your guests. Not every performer, however, needs to have a poignant meaning. Jeff Jarvis, a professional DJ, is also an Elvis impersonator whose performances always get the party started. “During dinner, it is often soft music or I’ll sing. But when people aren’t paying attention, I’ll run in the back to don the sideburns and the flashy outfit before announcing, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis is alive and performing here tonight!,’� says Jarvis. “The reaction is, well, it’s controlled insanity.At weddings, you have so many different age groups, and this is a way to appeal to all of them.� While Jarvis pulls out all the stops— scarves, gold-rimmed glasses and ubiquitous teddy bears—he is quick to point out that the show is not him but the bride and groom, and this type of performance is what breaks the ice. Brides have also hired him for their grooms and vice versa. Sometimes he “performs� a wedding service, complete with mock wedding vows that keep everyone in stitches. “I’ll say something like, ‘Do you, you hunka-hunka burnin’ love, take so and so,’ or, ‘If there are any suspicious minds who object, speak now or forever hold your peace,’� says Jarvis. Couples have also asked him to sing for their

It is a blast to see their excitement as it gets finished.” For an arguably less refined artistic element that is no less intriguing, have a caricaturist capture the joy of your guests throughout the night.This fun-filled addition is not only lighthearted and enjoyable, but can also provide creative wedding favors guests will treasure.

To appeal to the sweet tooth crowd, many couples provide a self-serve candy bar with color coordinated sweets, or present a Viennese table with cakes, cookies, pastries and mousses accompanied by a coffee station. While wonderful, consider making this sugary surprise an interactive display. Wedding timetable B&G’s guide for what to do and when This guide uses a timeframe of 12 to 18 months prior to a wedding date. As your event may be in less (or more) time, use this as a handy checklist for what to do first (and second, and third…).
At engagement • Discuss what size/type of wedding you want keeping style (formal or casual) and number of potential guests in mind. • Determine the budget, and who will be paying for what. • Book your reception location, making sure it coordinates with your ceremony (if it is being held elsewhere). • Attend a Wedding Expo.
Once the date is set 9 – 12 months • Research and interview potential vendors, such as photographers, bands/DJs, caterers (if necessary), bakeries, florists, videographers, transportation, etc. Keep in mind that many book events a year or more in advance. • Decide on any theme/decorative elements for your reception. • Begin shopping for wedding dress and accessories (veil, headpiece, shoes, jewelry, undergarments, etc.). • Renew your passports (if necessary) if your honeymoon trip will be outside of the U.S. • Select wedding party.
6 – 9 months • Go over ceremony details/ideas with officiant. • Order wedding dress and schedule fitting/delivery dates. • Select and order bridesmaids’, mothers’ and flower girl dresses. • Have all of your major vendors reserved. • Block off hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. • Decide on any extras for ceremony and reception (i.e. programs, favors, menus, etc.). • Finalize guest list and obtain updated addresses. • Send save-the-date cards. • Post details on your wedding Web site.
4 – 6 months • Select and order groom and ushers’ attire. • Select and order invitations. • Hire calligrapher or schedule a printer to address invitations. • Plan honeymoon. • Experiment with hair and make-up styles. • Consider extras: teeth cleanings/bleaching, regular facials, etc.

Need some help getting started? Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction. Begin with a budget How much money is available to spend? Who pays for what? Who makes the major spending decisions? When assessing these issues, make sure everyone involved is as clear, open, honest and—most importantly—as realistic as possible. The more that’s established and made clear now will make for easier planning and decision making later on.
Size things up The number of expected guests and the desired type of reception will set the tone for all other planning decisions, so it is important to get a handle on this early.The preliminary guest list should consist of the bride’s family and parents’ friends; the groom’s family and parents’ friends; and the couple’s friends. Since many locations may have requirements for the minimum and/or maximum number of guests, this information will be essential during your site search. Determine the specifications that will set the style of your party. Large or small? Formal or informal? Evening or daytime? Outside or inside? Winter, spring, summer or fall? Again, this information is a must-have for finding the ideal location (at the ideal time and price).
Location, location, location This mantra is as meaningful for weddings as it is for real estate.Whether your site is a fabulous hall or hotel, a beautiful park or your own backyard, options abound. It all depends upon the size of your reception and budget.
Use these sources to find your ideal site: local bridal magazines (like B&G), the phone book, the Internet and references from family/ friends.
Organization The best way to keep things running smoothly and stress levels manageable is to have some type of organizational system to sort out your planning information.Whether you use dedicated file folders, a binder or even just a single box, make this the place to keep all wedding-related data. But remember, this will only work if you are committed to it. Having a timetable may also help.We’ve provided one for you on p. 79.
Help Yes, it is your wedding but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Family members and close friends will most likely volunteer their services for any weddingplanning task.As a savvy project manager you will, of course, take them up on it.You may even ask them before they ask you! Keep in mind that delegating doesn’t mean compromising your vision; it means achieving it with less stress.
The deciding factor So what really determines the size and scope of your wedding? For some, cash is king when it comes to decisions about size and location. For others, a particular artistic or thematic vision may determine the place and cost. Whatever the driving force, you might find that you’re addressing the first three tasks listed here simultaneously. Don’t panic: There’s no specific method for making these decisions. Your best bet is to keep a list of what’s most/least important to you. By prioritizing (and, in some cases, re-prioritizing) your wants and needs, you’ll be more equipped to make the “tough” choices. Interviewing reception facilities THE CORNERSTONE TO PLANNING any wedding is the reception location. To make the most of your site visits and interviews, consider these questions: 1. Do you have any package plans? If so, what do they include? 2. Is there a separate rental fee for the site? 3. Do you have liability insurance? 4. How much of a deposit is required to hold the date? 5. What is your cancellation policy? 6. What is the maximum number of people you can accommodate? The minimum? 7. Is there a minimum charge we must pay regardless of the number of people we have? 8. Is there a kitchen on site? 9. Do you provide catering services? 10. document your day will require a fair amount of research.To help you get started, here is a list of more than 20 basic questions you should ask prospective professionals. (If you have any special needs or requests, be sure to mention them during your interviews.) 1. What is the photographer’s style (i.e., traditional, photojournalistic, artistic or a mixture)? Knowing what you prefer ahead of time will help narrow the field. 2. How many weddings does the photographer/studio shoot in a year? 3. If the studio has multiple photographers, which one will shoot my wedding? Be sure you see samples of everyone’s work and that you’re comfortable with the style of the photographer you’re contracting. 4. What type of cameras are used: digital or film? If digital, how new/updated is the equipment? If film, is it 35mm or medium format? (Medium format is a larger negative that makes large prints sharp and clear.) 5. What type of proofs will I receive, prints or electronic files? 6. If print proofs are made from film, will those images also be put into an electronic format? (Some photographers will have their negatives scanned for printing and archival purposes.) 7. If electronic proofs are provided (either from scans or original digital files), will they be posted online or sent to me on a disc? 8. If proofs are made available online, can I share them with family and friends? Will they be able to order prints from that site? 9. What is included in the packages offered? Extra tips Check out their work. Most photographers will have portfolios ready for you to browse through. Also ask to see all the proofs from a recent wedding as well as current albums they have just completed.What feelings do you get from these pictures? If they have captured a fun, romantic and/or loving element, you will know it. Get some good vibes. Do you feel comfortable with this person? You will be interacting with him for a significant portion of your wedding day, so getting along will go a long way. Also, do you get a sense that he enjoys what he does? Do you get a feeling of confidence from him? Make sure you get all your requirements in writing, everything from how many shots will be taken that day to any special effect shots they may take. • The outer envelopes, which have a glued flap, should contain the guests’ full names and complete mailing addresses. Abbreviations should not be used, except for salutations such as Mr., Mrs., Jr., etc. Write out words like Street, Avenue, North and South. Also, write out all numbered streets (Seventeenth instead of 17th) and city and state names in full. • The inner envelope, which contains the invitation, response and direction cards, etc., is not glued and should list full names (complete with salutations) but not addresses. Only use names for those you are inviting. If you are inviting a couple and their children, include the children’s names by writing them after the parents in order by age (oldest to youngest). If you are not inviting the children, do not include their names on the inner envelope. Children over 18 should be included on both envelopes. • When inviting two unmarried people living at the same address, or a married couple with two different last names, send one invitation with their names written out on separate lines in alphabetical order. • Avoid writing “and Guest” wherever possible. Dates of your family/friends will feel more welcome if their name is on the invitation, too. • The return address may be written or pre-printed on the flap of the outer envelope.
Acceptable exceptions to some rules • Is it paramount that your guests’ full names with salutations appear on both the outer and inner envelopes? If the event is formal, the invitations should be as well. But if

you are having, say, a casual afternoon affair, then using first names on the inner envelopes is considered ok. • Must each envelope be handwritten?This rule has been “bent” quite a bit thanks to the ready availability of calligraphy machines and home printers. Calligraphy done by hand is an art form that will add extra elegance to any invitation.A friend or family member with exceptional penmanship is another way to go. But if your budget/schedule will not allow for either, those printing options do come in handy. Be organized • Before you start addressing the envelopes compile your guest list complete with full names, proper salutations (i.e., Mr., Dr., Captain, etc.), correct addresses and zip codes. • Whether you are having the addresses printed electronically or handwritten, organize the information on a computer if possible.This will make things easy to read by anyone addressing by hand, and give you a usable electronic file if you decide to print from a computer (no need to re-key!).
Helpful tips • Order extra invitations. The cost to do so will be significantly less than if you have to have a second order printed. • Order extra envelopes. Mistakes happen, whether the addressing is being done by hand or by printer. • Bring one complete invitation—and by complete we mean everything from the invitation itself to all insertions (such as response and direction cards) in the final envelope—to the post office to calculate the proper postage. If you are getting married in Massachusetts, both parties must apply for the license together and in person—whether or not you are a resident. Applications are made by both parties (in person) in any city or town in Massachusetts. Where you apply is where the marriage certificate will be filed. There is a waiting period of three days.This includes Sundays and holidays, but not the day upon which the application is submitted. The license is valid for 60 days from the date you file and can be used in any city or town in Massachusetts. There is a state fee of $4.00 for the license, but each town is allowed to set their own fee in addition to that. Check with your town clerk’s office for cost information. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Some towns may require proof, such as a birth certificate. Basics 1. Track your expenses regularly to see how the numbers work with your budget. That way you will know right away if costs are getting out of control. 2. Plan far in advance. Time, as they say, is money. So the more time you have, the more money you can save. 3. Get married in the “off season.” Popular times of year are often more expensive than others. Look to the months of winter and early spring for available dates and discounted pricing. 4. Get married during the week. This is a great option for a small, intimate reception. For example, a Thursday night will likely be more available than a Friday or Saturday— and may offer better rates. 5. Look to your own backyard (or someone else’s). Whether it is for a ceremony and/or reception, you know the owner so there will not be any rental fees! 6. Cut the list.This is probably the toughest action to take, but reducing your head count is a sure-fire way to save big. 7. Ask your reception facility or caterer where you can trim costs. Options such as a beer/wine-only bar or fewer hors d’oeuvres/ desserts can yield significant savings. 8. Ask your baker about making a smaller cake to display at the reception and making sheet cakes to be cut and served. 9. Ask your photographer and videographer about decreasing the amount of coverage. Important things like the ceremony and formal photos can be covered by the pros;
you can leave the reception shots to your friends and family. 10. Share your ceremony flowers with another couple marrying the same day in your house of worship. 11. Look into using potted plants or dish gardens as centerpieces. They may end up being less expensive that cut flower arrangements. 12. Costs of live bands can rise due to the number of musicians. Look to bands that can vary the size of their ensemble. 13. If you are using a DJ and all you want is music, ask about eliminating the extras such as laser lighting and/or smoke machines, and inquire about limited emcee duties. 14. Simplicity is key. Consider doing without little details such as napkins with your names and wedding date, which can be costly when added to the other small details. Attire 15. Borrow a dress. Whether it is your mother’s altered to suit you or a friend’s gown that is just your size, working with an alreadyworn gown can make a substantial impact to your budget. 16. Buy a sample dress. Many bridal salons will sell, at discounted prices, the samples they have used in the store. 17. Check out bridesmaid dresses. Available in a variety of colors—including white and ivory—this option will cost considerably less and will likely be delivered in a shorter time frame. Details 18. Keep postage costs down by limiting the number of inserts and using a lightweight invitation paper. Directions can be provided through your wedding Web site. 19. Bargain shop for favors. Buy in bulk wherever possible to save on the per unit costs. 20. 1. Know your own style. Sure, you like flowers… but how do you like them arranged? Are there any particular blooms that strike your fancy? Check out bridal magazines, friends wedding photos and the Internet to find the styles you like most and least. 2. Now that you know your style preferences, what about that of a potential florist? Does it mirror or complement yours? If she favors modern and cutting edge designs while you prefer more Victorian and traditional styles, it might not be a good match. Here are some ways to find out if you will see eye to eye: • Ask about her artistic philosophies/ preferences. What designs does she like to create and why? • Ask to see photos of recent wedding work. • Ask to see any bouquets/arrangements in progress when you are at the shop. There is nothing like checking out the real thing. • Look around the shop; how it’s decorated and arranged will give you a good sense of her overall style. • Show the photos you have collected of what you like. What is the reaction? If she isn’t as excited by the designs as you are, move on to the next designer. 3. Know your budget and be up front about it with your florist; it is as important as your artistic vision.The cost of your floral decorations can range from moderate to exorbitant, depending on everything from the amount of flowers used, to the types (orchids will be infinitely more costly than carnations), to the

Bermuda There aren’t many islands left on the planet quite like Bermuda. The warm turquoise sea washes up onto coral-tinged beaches. The semi-tropical climate is warm year round, even though the island is 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Everywhere you go, the sea is seldom out of sight.Traffic moves at the astounding speed of 23 mph. And for golfers, there are more courses for the island’s size than any other destination in the world. Bermuda maintains its sense of unspoiled beauty by limiting the number of cars, the number of houses non-Bermudians can purchase, the number of cruise ships that can come into port and the number of hotel rooms. Note that you will not be able to rent a car.Transportation is available by cab, but a 10-minute ride can cost you $15. Renting a bike or moped, or taking a moderately priced public bus or ferry, are less pricey options. Restaurants also tend to be expensive as do accommodations, but getting there is fairly reasonable with roundtrip airfare typically around $350 to $500 from the East Coast. “HOW DID YOU EVEN HEAR OF THIS PLACE?” friends asked when I described Las Animas Wilderness Retreat. That’s your first clue that this is a great choice for a restful honeymoon. Las Animas, on the Sea Of Cortez about one-third of the way down western Mexico’s Baja peninsula, is so far from any road that you are unlikely to find it on a map. Search for Bahia de Los Angeles and you have found the general area, even though this tiny village is a 40-minute ride by motorized boat from the retreat’s quiet cove.
Yet before you even arrive, you know why you have come: the peace. Baja shares the desolate beauty of the desert with the peacock blue of the sea, all framed by pink and taupe mountains and the caldera of volcanoes gone by. Nothing obscures the eye-catching sights. The most common conveyance seems to be fishing boats. Aside from that it is you and the pelicans, blue-footed boobies and cormorants that nest on craggy rocks, soar over the deep blue, and dive into the fish-laden waters.

With vistas so clear, you see the splash of dolphins long before their sleek bodies near the boat. They frolic in the sea, in twos and threes, arriving by the dozens, then hundreds, leaping and gliding behind and ahead of the small boat. Here in the Sea of Cortez, schools of dolphin often stretch a mile long and half a mile wide, according to our naturalist guide. He estimates the school that seems to be welcoming us at 1,000 grey dolphins or more. We and they travel side by side for fifteen minutes or so until we part ways. The Sea of Cortez is a long channel, separating the 700-mile Baja, California peninsula from mainland Mexico. Home to massive whales and raucous sea lions, graceful rays and friendly sharks, every excursion between the town and the retreat is another opportunity to meet our water-bound neighbors. Giddy with excitement about our welcoming committee, we arrive at the place we will call home for six days. Above the gentle, crescentshaped cove of tawny sand sit nine yurts—spacious, round canvas-sided structures modeled after the traditional yurts of Mongolia. Not to be confused with any camping tent you’ve seen, these are the size of a grand living room, sleeping up to five in the larger yurts, with a loft, and more than ample room for two in the smaller structures. All include living room furniture, a private bathroom, comfortable platform beds, a broad waterfront porch, zip-down windows and a dome-shaped skylight; each is decorated with Mexican blankets, wall hangings and a few framed prints. This is a honeymoon as active or as laid back as you’d like. With rarely more than 12 guests at a time, your naturalist hosts tailor the 108 Winter

day’s itinerary to guests’ interests. Warmer months encourage more swimming and snorkeling, cooler months (a relative term) allow more hiking and whale watching. As no roads lead to this resort, all explorations are by boat or by foot. Skim along the channel on the lookout for rare whale sharks— large, spotted creatures with the rounded head of a whale but truly a species of shark. While not as playful as dolphins or whales, neither are they as dangerous as most sharks. Guests and guides take turns swimming alongside the huge creatures when lucky enough to encounter them.Whales abound in this channel in the winter, yet on our summer trip we were treated to a visit by a blue whale so long we were sure, at first, that we had spotted two immense mammals. Fishing is a prime activity in the Las Animas area. Even novice anglers reliably catch fish, thanks to waters rife with sea life and the skillful boat captains who have been fishing this bay all their lives.With conditions like these, fresh caught yellowtail, cod and cabrilla provide lunch or dinner most days of our stay.Yellowtail sashimi, just minutes off the boat, makes even your favorite sushi restaurant pale dramatically in comparison. A morning’s hike brings tasty appetizers as well. Close to the retreat is a mangrove swamp prized as a nursery for young sea life. We slosh through the briny stream, watching for tiny fiddler crabs and larger blue crabs, distracted a bit by the reddish egret that seems to enjoy this hike as well. Just before the stream meets the sea, our guide stops and invites us to go clamming. The rounded shells, striped and speckled in shades of crimson, ochre and burnt orange are easy to

find, barely masked beneath the sand’s surface. Even with temptations like these, sometimes the most inviting spot is the hammock-for-two in front of Las Animas or the cushioned lounge chairs on the wooden deck. Local beer and soft drinks are always on ice and available to guests. Grab a Baja travelogue, a regional history through the eyes of John Steinbeck or flip through the retreat’s guidebooks on local flora and fauna.
