Christina Calvao and Roberto Medeiros Devens, Massachusetts December 2010 The engagement Having dated for 11 years, Christina and Bobby knew they wanted to get married, but the timing didn’t ever quite seem right. “One of us always had something going on… a new job, school, etc.,” says Christina. “Then one day, Bobby said ‘Let’s go to the jewelry store,’ and I knew just what he meant.” Selecting the ring together was a fun and joyous adventure for them both. The couple spent hours looking at different styles; in fact, they stayed two hours past the store’s closing time before finding just the right ring. “Afterward, we walked out of the store hand in hand and didn’t let go of each other the rest of the night.”
The planning “If I was to change my profession tomorrow, I would become an event/party planner,” says Christina when asked whether or not she

enjoyed planning her wedding. Coming from a large Portuguese family that had many wonderful family and holiday gatherings, Christina had plenty of experience planning large events. “I also wanted to include everyone in the planning process—my mom, stepmom, sister, aunts and cousins, as we are all very close.” After first consulting with Bobby on how he wanted to contribute, Christina assigned other tasks to her family. “This way, all of my loved ones felt included and I got all the help I needed for planning.” Although they originally planned a fall wedding for 2009, the event had to be postponed when Christina was laid off from

her job early that year. Naturally she was upset and disappointed, however she was not deterred. “I did what I could to plan, save money and work on do-it-yourself projects,” she says. Luckily, she found employment the following year and she and Bobby rescheduled their nuptials for that winter. “It ended up being perfect as I love silver, gold and red, which are perfect for the holiday season. I also loved the idea of a winter ball with long gowns, satin dresses, big jewelry and fur coats.And where else in U.S. can you have a beautiful winter wedding but in New England?”
Details of the day Many of the unique details featured throughout wedding were made by Christina (with some help), including all of the printed pieces and a card box fashioned from hat boxes in the shape of a tiered wedding cake. Individual centerpieces consisted of vases, candelabras
and glass balls and were accented with dark red or white roses and green hypericum berries. Tapered candles and tea lights were used to create an intimate atmosphere. Place cards designed and printed by Christina were attached to gold colored Christmas ornaments and displayed on a tree decorated specifically for the reception. Guests were also treated to favors of home made anisette cookies baked by Christina and her mother in honor of Christina’s grandmother, who had baked them when Christina was a child. Non-pareils and chocolate kisses were included in the favor bags, which were assembled by the bride and her bridesmaids. The bride’s bouquet consisted of black baccara roses held together by a rhinestone cuff. Bridesmaids carried bouquets of white calla lilies and groomsmen each sported a single white calla lily as a boutonniere.

Favorite moments Of the day’s many great moments, Christina is particularly fond of the instant Bobby first saw her during the ceremony. “His back was turned until I reached him and then he turned around,” Christina recalls. “The connection we experienced at that moment is something I will remember always.”
Advice “Always shop around for the best deals, using local wedding magazines and the internet to find them,” Christina advises. “If you are will-
ing to be flexible, you can get some very good deals.” She also recommends having backup plans for the larger vendors, in the event that a business should close, as well as having a budget in place before the planning begins. “If I hadn’t had one, I would have gone way over,” she says. “You don’t realize how much everything costs until you write it down and actually add it all up. Decide how much you have to spend and then allocate B&G funds accordingly.” www.bridegroommag.com

themselves the “party planning girls.” Jaclyn decided to begin with finding the right dress, then go on from there. Because “the dress you love will be the dress you love no matter where you have your wedding.” Once Jaclyn had her dress, the couple selected The Harding Allen Estate for a September 2011 event. The party planning girls kept everything on track, and Ryan assisted with selecting the groomsmen’s attire and the venue, as well as with food and cake tastings.

Details
How they met Jaclyn and Ryan met at Wachusett Regional High School in 1999 and started dating when Jaclyn was a junior and Ryan was a freshman. Although they had a deep connection, the two parted ways and Jaclyn eventually moved to NewYork City.While there, she had a son and quickly realized she wanted to be closer to her family. Shortly after returning to Massachusetts in January 2009, she and Ryan reconnected and have been together ever since. “It wasn’t just about finding the right man for me, it was about finding the perfect gentlemen for me and my son,” said Jaclyn. “Ryan is a amazing father to Aiden.We realized that no one else would make us feel the way we do about each other, so we decided to get married and become a family.”

The proposal Before proposing in mid September 2010, Ryan asked Jaclyn’s parents for their blessing. He and Jaclyn had also been looking at engagement rings, but no specific proposal date had been set. On the morning of the day Ryan and Jaclyn were going to see Randy Travis in concert, Ryan got down on one knee and professed his love for both Jaclyn and her son. “I was so surprised,” recalled Jaclyn. “He had picked out a ring and already spoken to our parents with out me knowing. It was so beautiful and perfect.”

The wedding’s color palette centered on navy blue and soft pink, a combination that Jaclyn described as bold and beautiful. Bridesmaids wore navy gowns complemented by light pink shoes while Jaclyn donned navy satin shoes accented with crystals to tie everything together. The gentlemen wore black tuxedos, ties with hints of pink and navy, and pink—yes, pink—socks. In keeping with the vintage feel of the Estate, flowers were displayed in old fashioned typewriters, while miniature versions of those typewriters served as place card holders. The tables were draped with satin navy linens accented with ivory napkins. Vintage silver tea and coffee service sets served as centerpieces complete with floral arrangements. Table numbers were framed engagement photos of the couple with numbers displayed in a vintage typeset.
In lieu of a traditional guest book, guests were asked to write a note or some advice on 8"x8" pieces of pink fabric that were provided by Jaclyn’s mother-in-law and will be sewn into a quilt. “It’s something we’ll use over and over again and is so much better than a book,” said Jaclyn. The groomsmen’s gifts were personalized cufflinks made from vintage typewriter keys, which were purchased online at etsy.com. Other unique items found on etsy included Jaclyn’s garter, a special hanger for the wedding dress that said “I do,” and the wedding programs.
Decorations for the couple’s garden ceremony included draping the arbor in iridescent pink fabric and ivory hydrangea accents, and using antique white bird baths (with two love birds in each) in place of more traditional floral arrangements at the altar. “They are now special keepsakes for my me and my mom,” said Jaclyn.
Favorite part of the day “My favorite part of the day was the ceremony,” said Jaclyn. “Everything from my son running down the aisle to give Ryan his ring bearer pillow to the moment Ryan saw me to when we exchanged our vows.”
Advice From Jaclyn: “When the planning gets crazy, stay focused on what the day is really about: two people making a commitment of love and a life B&G together.”

of a challenging assignment with Teach for America in Nashville, Tenn., and the groomto-be was starting a new job in Denver, Colo., when they got engaged, so planning a wedding in Central Massachusetts in less than four months would prove to be quite the challenge for Emily Volkert and Josh Rosenfeld. They definitely succeeded—family and friends are still talking about how much fun the wedding was—with help from me, Emily’s mom, and the internet. Emily found her wedding dress at J.Crew’s online store and utilized a Nashville-based

seamstress, found through yelp.com, for custom tailoring. Meanwhile, I went online to research venues, florists and caterers, so that when the couple arrived for a whirlwind fiveday pre-wedding visit in March, they would be able to nail down the details for their July wedding. Emily and Josh chose July 9 as their wedding date “because we liked the sequence of numbers: seven-nine-eleven,” Emily joked. “It also gave me time to move to Denver at the end of the school year and have some time with Josh before my second year of teaching started at the end of summer.”

The couple met when Emily joined the wait staff at a jazz café in Boston when she was a student at Northeastern University. Food and music have been important to them, and so has travel. In the eight years they’ve been together, Emily and Josh have lived in 11 locations, including Peru, Costa Rica, Chile, Argentina, Bend, Ore. and Seattle,Wash. They spent a year in Chilean Patagonia teaching English and, after their return to the U.S., both were accepted into teaching programs in Nashville. Josh surprised Emily with
a proposal and an amazonite engagement ring that he designed with Ricardo, a jeweler the couple had known in Patagonia.They also designed and created the couple’s wedding rings of white gold, as well as a necklace of amazonite and lapis lazuli for Emily. Emily and Josh’s travel experiences reinforced their appreciation for the outdoors. Hiking, biking, horseback riding and skiing are favorite activities and they wanted their wedding to reflect their love of travel and the outdoors. For example, instead of table numbers, guests at the reception sat at tables named for the places in which Emily and Josh have lived. Photos of the couple from each location were set in pots of herbs that served as centerpieces. Good food and music also were important for their celebration. During their time in Boston and at a guest ranch in Bend, Ore., Josh and Emily learned to appreciate sustainable and local ingredients and they wanted
their wedding menu to reflect this as well. Josh, who majored in music at Cornell University, expanded Emily’s taste to include a wide range of musical styles and genres. Instead of a DJ for the reception, Josh tapped into his extensive library and created a sixhour playlist that was both eclectic and meaningful. Emily relinquished her first and second concepts for a wedding site—a big field and my backyard, respectively—in favor of venues that offered shelter in case of rain, which was a concern of mine. Searching online, I found that the Hoagland Pincus Center in Shrewsbury satisfied their desire for an outdoor ceremony and my own worries about the possibility of rain. The Center’s spacious grounds provided a scenic backdrop for the ceremony and the patio space was comfortable for the cocktail hour that followed. The guests then moved indoors for a buffet dinner and dancing. www.bridegroommag.com

More research and a referral from a trusted and experienced event planner led me to Tastings Caterers, a Framingham-based catering company owned by Sue and John Zahner. Sue got our concept right away. We wanted our guests to be wowed by the food, although we were working within a limited budget. She immediately suggested ways we could get the most from what we had to spend. The menu included grilled beef, salmon and veg-
etables from local farms. The catering staff set up grills behind the Hoagland Center and cooked the meal on site. ceremony, which was written by Emily and Josh and supplemented by readings from their brothers. “We wrote our vows, but we had no idea what the brothers would say,” said Emily. “What they came up with was so moving.” Emily’s brother Mark officiated after obtaining a 24-hour license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. During the ceremony he recounted Emily and Josh’s three-month stay with him in his one-bedroom apartment in Seattle. “They surprised me by how well they always managed to work through whatever challenge they were dealing with,” he said. “The best part was seeing how the two of them got along every day.” Josh’s brother Andy recounted Josh’s comments that some of the best things about Emily are how she introduces him to new things in the world. To the couple he said, “there is nothing to hold you two back from fulfilling your dreams, following your passions and cherishing your love for one another.” Josh’s brother Jason translated a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke. The weather that day was even better than we hoped for—warm, not hot, and breezy. My husband and I, and Josh’s parents escorted the bride and groom across the lawn of the Hoagland Center to a grove of trees where the ceremony was held.The couple stood with their siblings in front of large pots of brightly colored zinnias from our garden. After Mark pronounced them wife and husband, Emily and Josh danced down the aisle to the strains of a B&G New Orleans second line brass band. Yet experts and planners say that having one can actually simplify the planning process, saving you time and money and fostering a more intimate experience for your guests.

Today’s wedding websites have gone far beyond the novelty they once were. As Norwood-based Master Bridal Consultant Beverly Ann Bonner noted, a website is, in many cases, “an element of the wedding that many guests are expecting and anticipating.” John Scrofano, CEO of Nearlyweds! Inc., a wedding website design company based in Seattle,Wash., agreed. “It’s a reflection of the couple,” said Scrofano. “It’s a preview of what their wedding is going to be like and it’s a great communication tool.” Bringing your wedding into the 21st century doesn’t require being fluent in HTML — it’s a relative cinch for even the most

So in most cases, all you’ll have to do is arrange things the way you like, pop in some text and upload photos. “It’s a very easy process, it takes just minutes,” said Bonner, who runs the wedding planning service The Wedding Beautiful. Ideally, your website should complement the setting and vibe of your wedding. If you look to the color choices and design elements you’ve already chosen for your day, determining the theme for your site will be simple. For example, if you’re planning a black-tie event in downtown Boston, your site should have a formal look, according to Bonner. But if you’re going to wed on the beach while barefoot and wearing a sundress and a lei,your online theme can be a bit more casual.

Some sites make this easy by allowing couples to precisely match their wedding colors, while others partner with invitation companies so a couple’s online presence can be perfectly synchronized with save-the-dates and invitations. As for the content? Every personal wedding website, at a minimum, should include basic information about the ceremony and reception, particularly the when and where. Directions are important, too, and whether you decide to go very basic or super-customized with your design, photos are a must, according to experts and planners. Most couples also include information about accommodation options, things to do around town and various services, such as daycare. Some online tools enable couples to take this a step further by including links to hotel reservation pages or by integrating apps for sites such as Hotels.com, Orbitz.com or Google Maps. Ultimately, a personal wedding website “can help answer many questions about the big day,” said LinneaTangorra, a wedding planner with offices in Boston and Newburyport,

According to Scrofano, one of the most-viewed pages on a personal wedding website is the “About Us” or “Our Story” page. General interest in the couple aside, many longtime friends, former roommates or distant members of either side of the family may not know both halves of the to-be-wed couple. In keeping with this getting-to-know-us theme, couples will sometimes include the story behind their engagement. “That really helps bring people together,” said Scrofano. “You can really create a narrative for your wedding.” There are also several interactive options, such as videos, blogs and updates that can be posted throughout the planning process, as well as bridal party communication pages, Facebook integration and functions allowing visitors to sign guest books and upload their own photos. As for the convenience factor,some design tools include online RSVP options that can save money on postage and limit the impact on the environment, as well as links to registries.

Groups of women who are attending or participating in several weddings within the same circle of friends may worry that their friends’ events are (or will be) more lavish and lovely than their own, or too similar. And for the one who is the last in the bunch to be married, she may even fret about receiving fewer, or less substantial gifts. “I always tell brides to clear the date with their friends,” says Alexis Eliopoulos O’Mara, of Weddings by Alexis in Boston, Mass. “I also advise them to be considerate in order to keep expectations in check.” To thwart any “friendly” competition, O’Mara counsels brides to focus primarily on their own nuptials, encouraging them to do “what they can to make their own wedding unique, without copying or worrying about anyone else.” When two friends simultaneously plan weddings, mutual support can be make all the difference. “Going through the experience together was a lifesaver,” said Stacy*, a recent client of O’Mara’s. “We could both count on each other to help make decisions, or listen to the other vent about how stressful it could be.” These friends shared vendors and even hired a joint personal trainer for workouts. Their solidarity allowed them to be beautiful and thoughtful bridesmaids to each other. “Prospective brides are either 100 percent supportive of each other or they feel their friends aren’t paying enough attention to their wedding details,” offered Ron Davis, owner/manager of Shoes To Dye For in Natick, Mass. If you aren’t feeling the love from your also-engaged BFFs, Davis recommends paying more attention to them. “It’s all about positive reinforcement,” he said. “Make sure you are really there for your girlfriend, who may be more nervous than you are.” About a month before Amanda Johnson’s May 2010 Connecticut wedding, a close friend became engaged. C E N T U RY, F R A M E , PA R T Y, T E N S I L E , C L E A R S PA N — if you’ve ever considered a wedding celebration in a tent, its easy to be overwhelmed by the language, diversity and, sometimes, cost of tent rentals available today. In addition, there are a whole series of questions that come with renting a tent:Who sets it up? What about the liability? What about temperature control? How does the cost compare to a traditional venue? What comes with the tent rental and what is à la carte? Event tents have come a long way from the days of simple delivery and set up, and with the right planning, they can provide a unique setting for your one-of-a-kind wedding day. 58 Winter 2012 BRIDE&GROOM

First Things First As with any venue search, your first step should be to create a guest list so that you’re working with a ballpark figure of attendees. This will help determine how much space you’ll need to accommodate dining tables, bars and dance floor, space for the band or DJ, and areas for a cake display table, a guest sign-in table, a gift table and more. Next, even if you and your fiancé(e) haven’t confirmed a specific date, you’ll need to know what time of year you plan to wed, even if it’s just the month, as you might need to take into account the need for heaters or cooling stations. With all this in mind, you’ll be better prepared to speak to the event coordinator at the outdoor venue about your options. A seasoned wedding planner can be beneficial to help facilitate the tent rental, site negotiation and additional rental needs. “I work closely with rental companies and caterers to determine exactly what is needed for a successful wedding,” said Stephanie Frazier Grimm, owner of Couture Parties, which orchestrates weddings and events throughout New England. “I also provide my couples with a worksheet listing the elements they will have to consider when placing their rental order. If you do not have a wedding planner, speaking with your caterer will help the rental ordering process be much easier. Most caterers already include basic china, serving pieces and what
they will need to serve food within their proposals, but make sure you ask about what is included.”
Determining a Vendor Many venues require couples to work with a specific tent rental company or a list of recommended vendors. While this may seem limiting at first, in most cases, these tent vendors have been preapproved based on a history of well-orchestrated events, familiarization with the property and most likely, insurance and liability requirements. The truth is, a lot goes into assembling a tent that is both solid and safe, and venue or host properties want to make sure you and your tent are in good hands. If you feel skeptical about a vendor, set up a face-to-face meeting to learn more about their process and ask for referrals.

Which Tent is Right for You? It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the selection of tents out there, and just as easy to fall for what you deem the prettiest, but tent selection has much more to do with function than fashion. Here’s where your headcount plays a pivotal role. While you might consider a century tent with its dramatic, magnificent peaks and swooping, plunging lines that are the fairest of them all, if you have an intimate affair this may seem cavernous and sparse. The grandeur of this tent is best suited for larger groups. It also has the advantage of having window side walls (often available with either solid white or cathedral window designs), which will protect you and your guests from the elements. You also need to be sure not to choose a tent that is too small. “I know you’ve heard the phrase ‘bigger is better,’ and in the tent world, it is,” said Grimm. “Don’t get a smaller tent to try and save money. Creating areas in your tent is a perfect way to keep all types of personalities happy. A lounge area, dessert station, cigar bar, large dance floor, dining area, gift table, caterer’s tent, a bar or bars

This free-standing tent is without center poles and boasts 20-foot spans without a side pole, creating an open and uninterrupted celebration space. As such, these tents are considered some of the best for weddings and special events than any others on the market. The rental company will perform a site review before a tent is raised to determine the best set-up to maximize space, convenience and views. Central Mass Party Rentals also creates digital floor plans for couples and their event coordinators in advance. This provides a three-dimensional visual picture of the tent’s layout, including guest seating, décor and ceremonial event locations.The interior aluminum framework can easily be covered with elegant swaths of fabric. If you’ll be including a lounge area or special food and drink stations like a specialty martini bar or cigar rolling area, you’ll need to decide on flooring for these areas as well. As it can be customized to fit any area, you’ll need to make some decisions on what works best for your design scheme and budget. Newlywed Charlotte Snowden McGregor and her husband Ian tied the knot overlooking Narragansett Bay and celebrated with a tented wedding reception that had Newport’s historic Fort Adams as the backdrop. “I wanted Fort Adams as the venue above anything else, and wanted to be on the water,” said Charlotte. She worked with her caterer, McGrath Clambakes, of Newport, R.I., which organized the tent rental as well as the chairs, tables, place settings and everything else the couple needed to produce an elegant, seamless affair. The couple chose raised flooring for the band and dance floor while guest tables were situated on the natural grass surface, imparting the natural, organic ambiance the couple desired. “Tents are a cool way to personalize your wedding,” added Charlotte. Her advice to couples? “Find a caterer or vendor who does multiple [planning] aspects because it’s such a time saver and will save you headaches in the long run.”
Design and Décor One of the greatest aspects of a tented wedding is that, unlike ballrooms, museums and other traditional venues, the design potential is unlimited. “As a designer, I love tented weddings!” said Grimm. “It easily gives you decorating freedom. From ceiling

A white gazebo serves as the backdrop for on-site ceremonies as well as for photographs. Tall green hedges around the area ensure complete privacy. An estimated 200 to 225 guests can be seated for a garden ceremony.

Candace Gomez, the Inn’s wedding coordinator, helps couples plan a perfect celebration. Gomez collaborates with the chef to customize menus, which can include everything from vegetarian to allergen-free meals to a couple’s favorite comfort food, such as individual macaroni and cheese appetizers, sliders or a mashed potato bar. “The staff works very closely with our clients,” said Gomez, who attends every wedding at the Inn. “No request goes unanswered.”
Accommodations The Chocksett Inn also has bedroom suites available for guests, featuring spacious living areas, full kitchenettes and private baths. Guests have access to the on-site workout room and enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast each morning. All rooms are non-smoking and room blocks also are available as part the Inn’s “Wedding Package at Special Rates.” Two bridal suites and a private hospitality room for the bridal party make preparing for the big day easier. Brides especially appreciate amenities such as the toasting flutes, cake knife and cake server that are provided for them. “We take care of all the special little details,” said Gomez. “We want couples to focus on enjoying their wedding, family and friends.”
Other details The Inn can provide a list of preferred vendors, including photographers, florists, musicians, cakes shops, beauty specialists and audiovisual services. he timeless elegance of a stately and historic mansion is an ideal setting for any New England wedding celebration, andThe Harding Allen Estate in Barre, Mass. certainly fits the bill.The estate was built in the early 1900s for prominent businessman and philanthropist Harding Allen and his wife Carrie C. Allen. The estate has changed hands several times since Carrie Allen’s death in 1946, but present owners Grace and Carmine Gugliotti have diligently maintained the classic beauty of the mansion since purchasing it in 2004.

When entering the mansion’s front door, guests will step into a grand foyer complete with spiral staircase and a magnificent, and breathtaking, crystal chandelier.The elaborate wood carvings, intricate moldings, ornate marble floors and antique light fixtures throughout the house speak to a period when style and opulence reigned. Receptions are held in the mansion’s Fountain View Ballroom, a climate controlled, all-season room that accommodates up to 275 guests. According to Grace Gugliotti, the room was designed with the ambience of a traditional ballroom.Yet it also has the open-air feel of a garden pavilion, as glass doors open to formal English gardens, fountains, sculptures and a lily pond.A patio area that overlooks the gardens provides seating for small groups. Each room in the mansion is unique. The living room, which is oak-paneled and decorated with artisan works, features a fireplace and a black walnut wood floor. The music room, also known as the reception room, is home to a piano player and is richly ornamented with gilded details on the wall, a herringbone pattern on the floor and a French-cut crystal lighting fixture. A short hallway paneled with mirrors, modeled after the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, leads to the morning room, which features a floor of Italian marble with a marble fountain set in a corner.The walls boast inlaid canvas oil paintings. One of the prized rooms here is the Garden room, which serves as a bedroom. Five of the room’s eight sides overlook the garden and lily pond. Upstairs, the Spanish room contains elements of imported wood-carved figurines and stained glass windows. Much of the décor reportedly relates to Don Quixote, the character in a novel by Miguel de Cervantes.

Outside is the estate’s Greek-style pergola. Built in 1920, this is a romantic and intimate setting for an outdoor ceremony. Also on display are the more than 220 perennials that bloom from spring through early fall— some of which are original to the garden. “The estate was well-renowned for its gardens when Carrie Allen owned it,” said Gugliotti. “She was a competitive horticulturalist.”
Events The estate hosts one wedding or function at a time in standard time slots during the regular season, which runs from the last weekend in April to the first weekend in November. (Ask about off-season discounts.) According to Gugliotti, about 98 percent of weddings held here include on-site ceremonies. There are two ways to plan a banquet meal at the Harding Allen Estate:You can choose from one of many Elegance & Ease packages, or design a custom menu. Designed to make it easier for people to plan for their weddings, the Elegance & Ease estate rental package is standard with any of the wedding menu packages and includes all taxes, services, etc.

“The formula in place helps clients compare packages, and couples never have to worry about getting hit with sticker shock as their wedding approaches,” Gugliotti said. “The inclusive package works for everyone.” This rental package includes wedding time (five hours), a wedding coordinator to help plan the ceremony and reception, a parking attendant and front-door greeter, the player piano for entertaining guests during the reception, silk floral decorations for the foyer,
a decorated reception table and use of the estate’s gardens, grounds and mansion for formal photographs. A dance floor, Chiavari chairs, white table linens and napkins are part of the package, as is private cocktail and hors d’oeuvres service for the bridal couple and bridal party during the photo hour. The Harding Allen Estate is a no-tip facility. Overnight accommodations are available in the mansion. Guests can use the estate’s common areas after the reception will receive free continental breakfast. Grace and Carmine are very involved in the daily operation of the business. In fact, you will often find Grace, who is a former chef, in the kitchen during wedding functions. Carmine can be found in the front of the house during functions, and their son and daughter will help out when they are home from college.

Wedding timetable B&G’s guide for what to do and when This guide uses a timeframe of 12 to 18 months prior to a wedding date. As your event may be in less (or more) time, use this as a handy checklist for what to do first (and second, and third…).
• Finalize details of rehearsal dinner. • Purchase all bridal accessories. Break in shoes.
At engagement • Discuss what size/type of wedding you want keeping style (formal or casual) and number of potential guests in mind. • Determine the budget, and who will be paying for what. • Book your reception location, making sure it coordinates with your ceremony (if it is being held elsewhere). • Attend a Wedding Expo.
2 – 6 weeks • Confirm ceremony details with officiant. • Discuss and confirm special requests with photographer. • Confirm final arrangements with florist, bakery, limo service, etc. • Give wedding-day itinerary to the wedding party and to necessary vendors. • Start the seating chart. • Confirm honeymoon arrangements. • Arrange for a hold on your mail (while you’re away).

Massachusetts Both parties must apply for the license together and in person—whether or not you are a resident. Applications are made in the clerk’s office in any city or town in the commonwealth. Where you apply is where the marriage certificate will be filed. There is a waiting period of three days.This includes Sundays and holidays, but not the day upon which the application is submitted. The license is valid for 60 days from the date you file and can be used in any city or town in Massachusetts. There is a state fee of $4.00 for the license, but each town is allowed to set their own fee in addition to that. Check with your town clerk’s office for cost information. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Some towns may require proof, such as a birth certificate. Rhode Island Individuals marrying in Rhode Island must apply for a marriage license at a city or town clerk’s office. In Old Naples you’ll find fisherman casting their lines into the sea from a long weathered pier as well as chic shopping neighborhoods that will entice you to sip cappuccino and dine on shrimp salad or risotto at outdoor cafés. On trendyThird and Fifth Avenues, you can browse a seemingly endless collection of exquisite boutiques and art galleries.
Indeed Naples is one giant playground. There are more than 70 golf courses in the area, including Bonita Bay East, Twin Eagles and the Naples Beach Club.You can also dive into water sports, go deep sea fishing or take a stroll in the Naples Botanical Gardens, where you just may catch a concert on the grounds. A sunset cruise aboard the Naples Princess is a must.You’ll pass by pricey waterfront estates and yachts the size of doublewides before cruising into the open ocean to watch the sun go down. This three-decker boat is modern and comfortable, featuring lounges, sofas and a bar. Dinner at Naples Tomato is an experience you won’t soon forget. On the culinary cutting-edge, this eatery boasts a “mozzarella bar” offering five mozzarella choices along with antipasto items such as marinated mushrooms, roasted eggplant, cherry tomatoes with pesto and Italian meats. Enjoy a glass of wine using a unique self-service system where all you need is a credit card; pour yourself wine from a choice of bottles in graduated amounts. The Dock at Crayton Cove on the water in South Naples is another popular place with a lot of local buzz. Funky and casual, this establishment serves great seafood and fish dishes with a creative twist. Golfer Fuzzy Zoeller frequents Randy’s Fish Market on Immokalee Road. Make a stop there and you’ll understand why:You’ll never eat fish that is more perfectly cooked (check out the sautéed hogfish). Randy’s only cooks up what is in-house and fresh, and their key lime pie is well liked.

Other fun places to eat includeYabba Island Grill, where you can start out with one of their great rum drinks followed by delectable shrimp, and The Fish House, located on the water and known for great fish tacos and grouper sandwiches. Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa at the south end of Naples is a destination all its own. In addition to the Rookery Golf Course, the 727-room Balinesestyle resort comes with decadent pleasures such as a 3.5-milelong powdery sand beach, balconies overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and several places to eat and drink. Amenities include minibars, plasma televisions and luxury linens. There is a tennis center, amazing pool, cycling tours, game room, “Dive-In” movies, parasailing, Everglades excursions and a wonderful spa. Other good hotel bets include The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, the Hilton Naples and Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. A smaller, more casual (and less expensive) place to stay is the Inn of Naples.
Boca Grande Going north, Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island has three big things going for it: its beach, tarpon fishing and its location. Off the main north-south route, Boca Grande is all about eating seafood, lazy days on the beach, fishing, boating and bike riding. This quiet place has a small, eclectic shopping area where you can buy everything from Lily Pulitzer to Orvis fishing gear. The historic architecture is pure old Florida and there are no traffic lights or high-rise buildings. For breakfast head to the Outlet at the Inlet, Café Boca or the 3rd Street Café. The Grapevine Gourmet or Hudson’s are good bets for a quick lunch while more extensive menus are on tap at the Pink Elephant, PJ’s Seagrille, Miller’s Dockside or the Beach Club at the Gasparilla Inn. And for a bit of libation, be sure to check out The Temp—just look for the martini glass neon sign featured in the 2003 flick Out of Time starring Denzel Washington. The main game in town when it comes to hotels is the Gasparilla Inn. This grand and gracious gem dates back to 1916 and features an airy lobby and sprawling porches. In each of its 63 rooms and suites you’ll find Tempur-Pedic mattresses and upbeat décor. Its cottages and villas come with a kitchenette and may have a fireplace or screened lanai.
Sarasota Many know Sarasota as the winter home for several major league baseball teams, others find its cultural diversity appealing, with its seemingly endless number of art shows and performances along with theVanWezel Performing Arts Center and the Ringling Museum of Art. The city is an eclectic mix of Spanish and traditional Florida architecture graced by tall palms and flowering shrubs.You can always find a good place to visit, shop and dine.

Those looking for sand and sun can find it just off shore. Connected by causeways and bridges to the mainland, the barrier islands of Casey Key, Siesta Key, St. Armands and Longboat Key are characterized by pristine beaches and charming village centers like St. Armand’s Circle and Siesta Village, where the tempo kicks up when the sun goes down thanks to lively bars, restaurants and music. The beaches never seem too crowded. Casey Key, the southernmost key in Sarasota, is mostly residential with beautiful homes set along the narrow road that follows the curves of the island. There are a handful of motel-style places such as Beachcomber and the Gulfside Beach Club, that offer quiet, sand-between-your-toes holidays. One of the top beaches in the world lies on the barrier island of Siesta Key. Although the white powdery sand of this threemile expanse is soft on the feet, the sand near the water is still firm enough for that early morning run. Accommodations on Siesta Key are mostly low-rise condominiums, which stretch along Midnight Pass Road running the length of the beach.The Hyatt Siesta Key Beach offers highend condos in a mid-rise beachfront building. Along with really spacious rooms, you get complimentary continental breakfasts, a well-equipped kitchen, huge baths and the use of the fitness center and pool. The hotel has some great water toys like paddle boards and kayaks. Farther north, Lido Key and St. Armand’s have a number of hotels right on the beach including Holiday Inn Lido Beach and Helmsley Sandcastle. Longboat Key, a wider island than Siesta and large enough area to accommodate golf, has more fine beaches. The Longboat Key Club & Resort, a traditional favorite, epitomizes understated luxury. Balconies overlook the sea and rooms include wonderful beds, plasma screen TVs, wet bars, microwaves and refrigerators. Guests have access to 45 holes of golf, a private white sand beach with cabanas and the Island House Spa.

Innisbrook North of Tampa in Palm Harbor, Innisbrook, a Salamander Resort, is a self-contained playground with four superb golf courses, several pools and restaurants, and the Indaba Spa. Settle into your own condominium where you can sleep late, grab midnight snacks from your kitchen and log some serious pool time. Bring your best appetite to Packard’s Steakhouse, as the steaks there are big enough to feed four. There are five other restaurants on the premises, but since you have your own wellequipped kitchen, you can also dine in on takeout from Market Salamander. Once you arrive, you won’t need a car either. Innisbrook offers complimentary shuttle service throughout the property, including its beach club. Just relax and enjoy. Florida’s west coast is a definite for honeymooners looking for sun, sand, warmth and lots of things to do. Keep in mind that the farther south you go, the warmer it is. Tampa is generally 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Naples, and the good news is you can drive there as well as fly into Naples, Ft. Myers orTampa airports.
