I sound excited about our latest tool, I can't hold back! When you find out how long it I I took to make the simple little pro jects pictured within these pages you will have a cow! This is

an amazing tool with accuracy never before seen
in a wood shop. Here's the story of our new AM-l Angle Master- and how ylu can use it to make things you hqven't dreamed of yet! It is not
as easy as
it used to be for me to
see
1132" let alone U64". It is particularly difficult for me to see the graduations on a protractor,
even one
as
nice as our BP-18. This proposes
several challenges
in the woodshop because
accuracy is the hallmark of craftsmanship. And
nothing makes superb craftsmanship more attainable than tools which compensate for our own shortcomings. The AM-1 Angle Master is such a tool and much, much more. From round trees we make rectangulaL lumber.
Unfortunately, many craftspeople are forced to
limit their ptojects to 90 degree angles or simple variations, After all, 90 degrees is easily repeatable and quite functional in the paradigm of
construction. If there was a way to insure that
"odd" angles were
as easy
to repeat as 90 degrees,
then I believe woodworkers would have a much broader palette of projects.
I love innovative work and untraditional forms
increments. With the aid of a ruler (Figure 1),
(not alwa)zs rectilinear). Traditional protractols,
beam compass or trammel
including our own BP-18 Bevel Protractor, rely
AM-L Reference Guiile, two simple index pins
upon predetermined markings to help you layout or determine angles. The difficulty with this methodology is that accurate fractional degree graduations are llmited by the size of the
protractor arc. If the arc is too small, the graduations are nothing more than generalities and impossible to read. If the arc is large enough
to be of significance, the tool becomes cost
prohibitive. The AM-1 Angle Master is not limited by these considerations because it is a device which relies upon trigonometry for its "soul", Slmply stated, the holes you see in the two arms of the AM-1 create 72 distinct hypotenuses for any given angle. With the aid of a computer and much tinie, over 600,000 possibilities were considered to arrive at the hole positions found
in each arm. These precisely located holes allow you to set angles in five hundredths of a degree
O
(Figure 2), and the
are adjusted to a measurement no
finer than
-l,116"
(or 1-mm)! Mathematically, the accuracy of this concept allows for angles with a maximum linear error of .0008" over six inches (.02-mm). Quite frankly, that is a ridiculously small error; however, it is so easy to achievel You now have the ability to do things that you could not do before! This is one of the hallmarks of a great
tool, your capabilities have expanded. Here is an almost unbelievable example...
How to Make a Five-Sided Fruit Bowl.., study model, I set out to make a simple project that I was quite certain the fl llvast majority of woodworkers could not easily figure out. Using information fiom our J1

.RDER TELL FREE I -E! tr l-z5:3-BBB!'
eveLybody in our office wants to take home! I ripped a scrap piece of MDF seven inches wide by appLoximately three feet long. I then set the AM-l to 61.25'and plopped it into the miter gage groove (FiguLe 5) of my table saw (it fits pefectly) and set my miteL gage to 61.25'. While the AM-1 was sti11 in the saw miter slot, I set it to 67.30". I transferred this setting to my trusty BCTW T-bevel (FiguLe 3) and tilted the saw blade foL a "light tight" angled setting. I then set-up a stop block on my Paralok saw fence to repeat my cutoff lengths, I made my fiLst cut. Then I flipped my board edge for edge, slid it to the stop and made my second cut. The first of five tapered wedges was complete. Four more pieces later and I was Leady to play. I traced a 5" diameter arc fiom m)'sal'blade dampener on each of the five pieces. I band sawed the arc and then dlsc sanded to the line.
I taped the outside edges of the n'edges together and flipped the five connected pieces to apply glue
to the open miters. The whole assemblv rvas "clamped with tape" and the glue allowed to dry.
Aftet a light finish sanding, three coats of OSHA yellow paint were applied, with "0000" steel wool rubbings between coats. (This simple fruit bowl has no bottom because
it doesn't need one.) Imagine joints so perfect that you can tape them
together until the glue is dry! Now here's the amazing part. The entire process of angle settlngs, and all cuttings for this bowl, which does nothqve qn atom of filler init, took less than SIX MINUTESI The curved work took approxlmately 20 minutes and painting is painting. The little bud vase pictured was made from the remaining scraps of MDF while
I was goofing around. The miter gage angle was 83.70'and the table saw blade was
to 60.60'. It is a six-sided vase and from start to finish, not including painting, this was a twelve minute proiect, TWELVE MINUTES! And the joints are light tight. set
This type of work is impossibie without information and a device for accurately
determining fractional degree settings. Needless to say, these two simple projects represent the tip of the iceberg when
