or two hours behind a traditional European saw...no thanks! Conversely, it's almost impossible to become fatigued using any Japanese pull saw. The thinner blade allows {or finer teeth and fine teeth yield more accurate cuts with much less effort. Because these saws are so fast cutting and efficient, the blades are almost half the length of a \(estern saw, yet the results are twice as fast! This is true economy of motion and material. The long handle ofJapanese saws can "splint" the wrist by bracing to the forearm. Vith a "stiff wrist" it's easy to cut a dead straight line. At other times you'll find gripping the handle at the end advantageouslike many techniques, everybody has a favorite. Howevet, there is simply no comparison between a Japanese woodworking saw and their Western counterparts in speed, accuracy and ease.
All that's
needed to cut efficiently and faster than you have ever done in the past is a light pull stroke and a graceful retreat. You simply need to
completely abandon any urge to apply a downward force while cutting. It doesr-r't get any easier!
The tool steel in Japanese saws is remarkable for its ability to hold an edge in comparison to European style saws. At tirnes it's difficult to believe they are not dull! Although it was cornmon (if not economically irnperative) to sharpen saws, it's now rnore economical, efficient and practical to replace blades. I have used Japanese saws for over twenty years and I quit sharpening thern about nineteen years ago...yotr get the idea. It makes little sense to file these extraordinarily fine teeth by hand. (l cannot even see the teeth on our new Dozuki saw without magnification!) If your work habits are "tool fi'iendly", yor-r can expect to use your Japanese saws for hundreds of hours before you notice the effects of dulling. "Let the saw do the work" works best fol blade longevity.
Dear Bridge Ci4t Tool CIub Member: I
It
I
is with great pleasure we are able to offer you three of the finest handsaws produced in the world today. Here's their story...
Japanese saws differ from European or "\flestern" saws in four major design considerations. The blades are significantly shorter, they are
much narrower, the teeth are "backward" and they have what appear to be excessively long handles. These sr.rbstantial differences create a
cutting tool simply unmatched in accuracy, speed, energy conservation, 'Western counterparts. and ease of use compared to their
The care, skill and reputation of the Japanese saw maker has a direct irnpact on the price of the saw. You can spend over Ili1,000 for a single saw in Japan! Although this might seem excessive (at least it does to me) you can expect to pay upwards of !i100 for a pr:ofessional saw where the cut is sirnply hard to believe . Almost any Japanese saw, everl the "warehouse depot" models will outperform nost European style saws in cutting efficiency. However, cuts looking like they have been
made with a tazo\ and feel like glass to the touch, are only achievable with professional quality saws produced for true craftspeople. There are three commonly used Japanese saws found in the woodshop: the Dozuki, Ryoba, and the I(ataba. \ifle are thrilled to share with you
European handsaws rely on "brute force" for their effectiveness.
these three exquisitely crafted saws designed and produced exclusively
Cutting on the "push" stroke places the saw blade under compression. (\fle've all had these saws "buck" in the middle of a cut.) Consequently the blades are thicker to maintain rigidity. A thicker blade requires more force to do the job. More force requires more energy. And when energy runs thin and you become tired, the job is no longer fun, it's

work. If this were not enough, residing at the end of your forearm is an organic "universal joint"-the wrist. The small muscles of the wrist easily fatigue, which is why sawing with a traditional rip or crosscut saw is hard
work-making accuracy djfficult.
In contrast, a Japanese hand saw cuts on the "pull" stroke. A saw blade under tension can be substantially thinner than a blade designed
for a push stroke. (You can push_a_wue through a pipe before it buckles, but you can always pull a thread throughl) Additionally, the muscles drawing your hands and arms towards your torso are much bigger
and stronger than those muscle combinations that "push". No matter how you word it, pushing is a "force" move and pulling is a "finesse" move. Finesse is required to do accurate work. Imagine spending one ORDER TOLL FREE

The consistent golden color of the high-grade Japanese steel is your assurance the blade has been correctly tempered. Most manufacturers
grind off this "discoloration" which can introduce unnecessary stress back into the steel and/or hide poor quality and inconsistent work. The handles are simply beautiful. Each is hand wrapped with a special braided cord, the ends capped with brass ferrules. You will iove the way these tools cut, feel, and when they're not working, you will love the way they make your shop look! Finally, each of the saws comes with a high quality protective sleeve for vertical or horizontal storage.
I learned during my visit to Japan that most saws specifically made for export are of a much lower quality than similar tools for Japanese craftsmen-not the case with these professional saws. I am confident you will find these three saws to be the finest replaceable blade sas's available in the States today. Happy sawing!

In most cases, it doesn't make sense to mount drills 1/+" or smaller (or a countersink) in a powered drill. These small drilling applications are much easier performed and controlled with the sensitivity of hand
We are in production of Commemorative Tool #6, perhaps one of the finest tools ever made in this countr6 period. It is our intent 1o deliver these one-of-a-kind works of art during January and Febrtary, 1,999 .
There are approximatel)' 300 hand drills remaining. Once these are gone, they will be gone forever. For those of you trying to locate a CT-1, 2,3 &.4,yor: know we do not revisit commemorative tools once they are all sold. We also typically do not advertise a cornrnemorative tool more than once, however we have so many new club members since the introduction last June, it is appropriate to inform all members of the availability of this very special tool.

In a hand drill, the gear train transforms the handle rotation to the chuck

there is only one spot between the drive gear and the pinion(s) where the mesh
allows maximum power transmission with minimnm "grind". The most common way to "design around" these tolerances is to "float" the pinion(s). This means the pinion gear was purposely "sloppy". Upon rotation they would "float" and find "the spot" wher:e the train appeared to work. Unfor:tunately, the driven pinion is connected directly to the chuck shaft, so by default, thrs as

well. Conseqtrently, the entire
chuck/shaft/pinion assembly was always loose in the body of the tool. This is just an awful way to build a drilling tool, and it is why many of these drills performed very poorly at low lprn's-which is exactly where they were to perform best! The gear mesh in the CT-6 Fifteenth Ar.rniversary Hand Drill is as good as it gets.
